Great place, had awesome conversation with the owners, and they were accommodating when a dust storm came up and ruined my salad. Loved this as a nice lunch stop to get off the motorcycle for a bit and chill, even during this season of COVID! :/
Open 7 days a week 8:30am till at least five. Later on busier days until 10pm. Great burgers, pizza and appetizers. Full bar and free camping, showers, and laundry for all hikers.
Many years ago my husband and I had been backpacking in the wilderness for a week. On our drive out, we stopped here for lunch. As we began to order we found out they only took cash or check, neither of which we had (this may have changed since). The owner said "oh Lord, I've been feeding you backpackers for years and I'm stopping now, what do you want? You can send me the money". We have never forgot that lunch, she sat down at our table and we all talked. We tell that story all the time. The Grumpy Bear is a must stop.
Outstanding food and service from Madison and whoever the cute chef was hiding in the kitchen making our burgers, fries, salad and shakes. okay, the chef might not have been so cute but the food, the food was outstanding!
We hot stuck in the mountains because we blew a head gasket. We waited at Grumpy Bear's for almost 8 hours. They were the nicest people! They allowed us to use their personal cell phone to get a tow truck, and even stayed open late til the tow truck got there to pick us up. I would go there again and again.
Eat here almost every weekend, excellent burgers with a great view!
I’m shocked and obsessed with this place! The service is so insanely lovely. As a Vegan the menu has blown my mind for breakfast and dinner. Bar pumping, good happy people all ties together for a recipe for a perfect stop!!! When asked how can I review they said how can we improve!? They listen they care and they are full of love. I can’t tell them how to improve because I don’t think it’s possible.
This place has the best food you can get in town the Cook is Donna and my mom Laura sometimes they do they're best. The owners Scotty and Kendra are really nice. If you come here I would get anything with french fries because the French fries are homemade and really good. Some people forget that it's up in the mountains and the place runs on generator and if you're the last person in line it will take longer because everything runs on propane the only things that are important that you get your food warm and nothing is wrong with it and you don't leave hungry we just want you to have the best experience and have the best time and want everyone to know their welcomed any time just remember it's a stress free place and remember what the workers have to do to keep you guys fed
Food was amazing. Also they let me charge my e-bike, without that I would not make it:-) Thank you very much!
Wow, the food is fantastic and PCT hikers, OHV groups, locals and tourists make this one comfortable and fun wilderness experience. I love it at Grumpys! Oh yeah, Did I mention they have free tent camping out back plus Yurts, Trailers and a cabin to rent out?
This place was a hiker oasis! The food selection was decent greasy spoon type food with vegetarian and vegan options. They had a full bar, lively atmosphere, and great service. Free camping, free laundry, and free showers were available on site. It can get a bit loud at night but other than that it is a great place to prepare for the Sierra Section of the PacificCrestTrail. Don't act like disrespectful hiker trash and they will treat you wonderfully. They work hard and clean up after a lot of nasty hikers so clean up your mess, tip well, and say thank you!
Great, walked in and ordered take-out, asked if we could sit outside on the patio with our dog while we waited for our order to be prepared. No problem!! Took our food home and ate. It was delicious. Our pup had some leftovers and agreed wholeheartedly!!
Grumpy bears is the best bar on the mountain. Scott and Kendra and their amazing staff work to support hikers, bikers, and locals. Food is enough to keep you going all day (seriously, their breakfast burritos can feed two people 😋) Plus, the owners know everything about the mountain. So if you need a cold beer, some awesome food, and good advice, hit up Grumpy Bears!
A really really cool spot to grab a burger and a beer. Off the main road and a fun drive to get there.
When I think of Kennedy meadows I think of sitting on the porch watching the sunset and the moonrise. Excellent location, especially for the Pct hikers. Showers and laundry are a huge plus and the accommodations for purchase are a little touch of privacy but not away from all the hikers camping. Loved the time we spent here. Thank you Kendra
This place, these guys, are incredible. It truly is a “retreat” - an oasis of warmth, food, community, and help in what is otherwise just a wild, albeit beautiful wilderness. Scotty and Kendra are just such kind folk, they helped me out with all kinds of things I needed, and Ricky is just there to help others all the time — picking up campers and hikers, giving advice, going above aboard. The vibes from this place is that it is not a business, these folk are not just doing their JOBS, they are being there for other PEOPLE. It is NOT about the money for them. And they offer so many free things!! If you ever make it out Kennedy Meadows, hanging out there will be well worth it. — Shlomo
If you what to get away this is the place! There is no phone service at all. So be prepared! During the spring and fall you will see a lot of hikers there bc of the Pacific trail. The best food ever! You must try the pizza and the burgers. They are the best!
PCT hikers, YES. GO HERE. They've got a whole section of the menu for vegans/vegetarians. If you're vegan/vegetarian, I'd highly recommend the vegan burger. The staff is SO friendly. It's right next door to Triple Crown Outfitters, which you should also stop at. Such a great place to get some hot food either to celebrate finishing the Sierra (SOBOs represent!) or to prepare entering it.
Good food and friendly people. Owners were very gracious and helpful when my truck broke down. The cheeseburger and fries were great. It’ll be a regular stop for me when I’m in the area.
Friendly employees and clientele, great atmosphere, and good food., I recommend it in winter time. Not so much when it's warmer because of the PCT hikers who can't shower during their trek. Still, if you're driving in that area, it's worth checking it out.
The BEST BURGERS WE EVER HAD!!! I can't express just how happy we were when we got our food. I had the Grumpy Bear burger which was massive. We all laughed at how the heck I was going to open my mouth to eat it! My son had the Patty Melt and he swears it was the best melt he's ever had. I had a bite and will definitely be ordering one the next time I return. His girlfriend had the single cheeseburger and she was enjoying every bite of it. The average price for food is close to $20.00 but worth every penny and to be quite honest, we would have paid $5.00 more happily. The staff were extremely busy but warm and helpful. The service was prompt and attentive. They have power strips everywhere for people to charge whatever they need charged and since cellular service from all carriers is non-existent, they offer WiFi starting at $2.00 for 2 hours. The place is along the Pacific Crest Trail and they offer free laundry and shower services to everyone who needs it. There's so many hikers, from all around the world, around the place and everyone was extremely friendly. The location is just beautiful in the town of Kennedy Meadows and the building is wood and has a rustic feel. I can't say enough about this place to really give you the true feel for the place but it's definitely our top three foodie destination. Enjoy 🤠
Awesome place with wonderful people. We had a good time. The food was delicious, the proportions were big and everyone there was so friendly. I've always enjoyed coming to Grumpy bears, it's so peaceful. They also offer wifi which is nice since you're out in the middle of nowhere.
Had a great stay while hiking the PCT. Food was great, staff are super friendly and fun, and plenty of space to camp. Definitely recommend staying here while in KMS
Great food, a little on the pricey side due to location, but worth the couple extra bucks for quality food.
When you visit Kennedy Meadows, you have to stop here! Laid-back atmosphere with locals and tourist alike. Super friendly, easy going and special spot seemingly in the middle of nowhere! Be sure to say hello to the owner, Scott. He’s basically the town mayor! They have new cabins and a campground that I can’t wait to check out next time.
We stopped by there for the first time. We had a single cheese burger. It was delicious! We will visit there again next time we travel around there.
The boneless chicken wings are delicious. I usually don't like boneless chicken wings but these are more like round chicken balls. The Grumpy Nachos were also delicious. There was a good mix of flavors.
We got burgers for an early dinner on our overnight adventure bike ride. Dinner was great and the view was beautiful.
If you’re a PCT thru hiker, Grumpys is one of the spots to check out. Great atmosphere and friendly/helpful staff. Also you should experience their outdoor shower it’s magnificent.
WOW!!! BEST EXPERIENCE!! Go here with your friends and you'll be surely enjoy the journey. Worth a visit!!!!!!!!!

Excellent place to stay! The cabins and yurt were perfect for our group. The food was great and you get a lot for the cost. Would highly recommend hiker spend a day or two here before heading north. Showers, laundry, package pick up and they send, rides and much more! Awesome owners!!
Great place to get a bite to eat or have a drink. They also have rentals if you want to stay for a few days.
The staff are amazing and Scott’s a real trooper. He did a huge favor for me and I’ll always be grateful!
Absolutely great place! We came through and spent the night on their camp ground while traveling across the sherman pass. Tent camping is free. Great food, cold beer and super atmosphere what else is there to say. Places like this need to stay in existence and I am happy to support.

Tough place to offer good service, everything hauled in ~100 miles. Good choices. Happy customers. Slow service due to one staffer being off duty. But - very expensive compared to city life.
Seems like the backbone of this small town in the mountains.
Food was decent, really good though if you have been on the trail for a while. Pretty good ambiance too: DJ outside playing music during the day. Overall Mom and Pop vibe. For PCT hikers, across the street there is a nice little outfitter for resupply.
Great place for a stop off. Facilities adequate and really friendly service. If you're hiking it's an ideal rest point with laundry and showers and food/beers. Really nice server gave us tips on the local area. Would recommend.
Great place to stop as a hiker, complimentary showers and laundry, camping and place to charge your devices. The food is fantastic, good selection of beers on tap. Definitely a party atmosphere which is a nice break after getting off trail. Also if you're coming through Kennedy Meadows, it's a nice place to stop along the way. It's run off grid on generators so make sure you order your food early before the 7:00 p.m. cut off and same with showers and laundry. Do it early! Scott and Kendra are amazing owners. Please make sure if you're staying there you patronize the business. Help keep these kind of places open. ❤️
Cold beer & ice cream after a long, hot day of hiking. If busy, expect to wait for 30 min. for food. Pit stop for PCT hikers. Great views. Indoor & outdoor seating.
I stayed here for about 3 days while hiking the PCT. Here are my pros and cons. Pros: $3 showers in a real bathroom with running hot water, decent food (pizza was disappointing for the price), tax is included in price, great company (hikers and locals), men and women restrooms with flushable toilets and working sinks. Free camping, great Wi-Fi! Cost money, but it is not worthless like the gen store wifi. Cons: Incomplete menu (doesn't show drink selection or prices). Even though the sign outside says it's a store.. It isn't, Only bar and grill. Buy your groceries at gen store Some prices: XL thin pizza 18.75 I think* for just cheese. Wi-Fi is $2=2Hours $5=8Hours and $10=24Hours
Great food, the triple crown is a massive burger! The party melts were delicious!

The cheeseburger was great, the staff was nice, but the restaurant itself is kind of a mess. It has such potential to be a great spot. The rear deck has great views, but there's a lot of clutter on the property. Breakfast is served until 10, but I was informed they're "out of season" for breakfast. Guess it's a slow time.
The food was mediocre, but the service was horrible. The woman bartending and serving (the owner) was rude, went out of her way to make us feel unwelcomed. I asked where I could get silverware and the owner paused, rolled her eyes and motioned over to the corner where I could go get them. I wish I could've tipped after the meal. After being in such a hostile environment, I felt she owed me money. She had hikers pay before their meal and customers not hiking pay after. The tea was awful and tasted like chemicals.
Like the other review said this place isn’t necessarily “family friendly”. It’s definitely a locals bar and can feel unwelcome if you aren’t their kind. Saw a guy stumble out with a beer in hand and get right into his jeep and drive off. Thats the kind of vibe you get here.
