Wayback Burgers in Ladera Ranch is a popular stop for travelers, especially those seeking an alternative to typical fast food. Customers consistently praise the fresh, hot, and juicy burgers. Some find it a great alternative to In-N-Out, though pricier.
Tip: If traveling on I-5, this is a great alternative to chain restaurants. Order online ahead of time to avoid waiting.
Made a quick stop for simple & quick dinner. Didn't know it was a burger chain from Norcal. Store was small but relatively clean. Menu seemed simple and neat. The buger had a similar flavor/taste of Shakeshack (personal opinion), but the bun was slightly different. Can't really describe in how..lol Wish I tried their fries too. Overall it was good quality food.
This was my first time at Wayback burgers. They are in their own building that is attached to the mobile gas station. I got the double classic cheeseburger, hamburger with fries and Coke. The burger was outstanding and I was totally impressed. The store is extremely clean and the one employee I talked to was very nice and helpful. Outstanding job Wayback!
This burger joint blew me and the hubbs to a whole nother dimension, holy cow. Real soft, juicy tender beef that I believe is Harris ranch beef as well, soft buns and everything was so fresh out the grill and fryer we had to give it time to cool down just a little. The cheese pull off this burg was 10/10 and the mac and cheese bites were the best I have ever had, compared to any other place that makes them!!
As a middle-age person, I get to listen to people worry about their weight all day long not me, I don’t worry about my weight I already am fat. What’s there to worry about? But let me tell you something that I enjoy a good old-fashioned milkshake. And I felt that God and country answered with way back burger now this way out location Doesn’t make it easy to find but once you stop, you won’t regret it one bit. The service is wonderful the lobby is clean and for an old fat guy like me I’ll be enjoying getting fat or drinking this milkshake. I ordered the cinnamon toast crunch when I get fatter? I’ll try the red velvet. Staff is hard-working. I hopt you enjoy this place as much as I do.
I am so happy we stopped here instead on McDonald's! The fries were amazing! The way I love them. They even put the fries in a to-go box that made eating in the car so much easier. 100% recommend the cookies and cream/oreo milkshake, too! Then: the special october burger had a pretzel bun. So happy! We are so happy with the service, the food, and even the Halloween decorations!
I spent $100 for a family of five. Not everyone ordered drinks, and we shared one large order of fries, which was more than enough for all of us. We also tried the cheese curds, but a regular order would have sufficed. One downside was that they don’t offer marinara sauce. The burgers were outstanding—definitely better than any fast-food chain, including The Habit. All the burgers on the menu are double patty, which explains the higher price, but there’s also an option to customize your own. Some of the sauces were a bit too sweet for my taste. My grandson ordered one that resembled a Jack in the Box burger or a patty melt. I don’t remember the name, but it was absolutely delicious.
EXCELLENT burgers, tater tots, and real milkshakes. You can customize your burger with tons of toppings and sauces. I highly recommend the chipotle mayo.
I had the bourbon burger at the cashier's suggestion. I added the Cajun tator tots on the side. Burger was surprisingly good. Hot and fresh. Tots were also good. The only disappointment was they were out of the mint chocolate chip shake.
This is one of the best burger option along the 5. Juicy, freshly made, and tasty burgers. I love them lettuce wrapped so was positively surprised getting them made even if not on the menu. Definitely try it!
Delicious food, good price, nice staff, clean restroom.
Genuinely not a bad place but if you need to charge your car, it’s great. They just added Rivian chargers, and the next parking lot over has electrify America.
Everything was amazing, especially the onion rings hands down were the best I have ever had!! A little pricey but we'll worth the money!!!
Great Burgers if you're traveling along I-5 between LA and SF.
I have never been here before and figured after passing it year over year on I5 in CA, why not finally give it a go. I was shocked to say the least. Staff was personable. Checked on me and asked me how my food was after I actually had time to enjoy it. I was full half way through but because it was good and I knew I wasn't going to eat again for at least another 6hrs, fudge it... I finished it.
Highly recommend ordering on the website before you get here so no wait. A little high priced, but my new favorite burger!
Best burger EVER!! No kidding around!! If you are an investor and want a sure thing? Yes that good!! Real meat, real fries, and the shake was simply incredible!! Just ask for Ivin, he’ll take good care of you!! Good vibes and freeway access is close. I recommend putting this restaurant on your must stop list to visit while traveling through.
Hell this is almost worth driving out here for just this great sandwich I got here and nice chocolate shake some money rings all of it. Excellent gal behind the counter. Great personality. This is a five-star restaurant far as I'm concerned
Order hubby a double bacon and cheese he devoured. ×2 onion rings and Cajun tater tots. And Chilli cheese hot dod. Not bad to be craving the dog. The onions rings cooked to perfection not to hard not to soft I thre a little salt and " We Got Action! ONLY MY SECOND TIME HAVING THEM AND NOT DISAPPOINTED AT ALL.
I forgot to add a review for the kind ladies working there. I visited here on the way back home from a vacation on 8/27 evening and ordered two burgers, one shake and Cajun tart. Everything was delicious, the cajun tart was really good. They have specialty in sauces and it would have been better to have a suggestion on the menu for the sauces. I spilt my milkshake and the two ladies working there immediately made a new one and cleaned up the mess for me, they were very kind and it was a level of service you hardly find in restaurants/shops on the road. Was happy that we stopped by at Wayback Burgers. Sorry for the ugly pic.
Very good burgers and fries. Employees are also very friendly, courteous and professional. Been here 20+ times
Great place to refill your tummy while you recharge an EV. Better than most fast food options. Meals cooked to order, so very fresh.
A great find. Excellent burgers, fries and a chocolate milkshake. The two young ladies running the shop did an outstanding job getting the orders out quickly and correctly. Highly recommend this for your road meal off I5.
I can't remember the last time I had a burger that scrumptious! I got the "build-your-own" option, with bacon and pepper jack. I subbed the fries with the PERFECTLY cooked onion rings, and upgraded the drink to a "Cinnamon Toast Crunch Shake".... I bout hurt myself it was so good!!
My son and I stumbled on this place by accident. I’m so thankful we did. The food was superb, the service excellent. Would love for them to open one up in Fresno. I can’t wait to go back. ❤️❤️❤️
We stopped by this place because there was a EV charging station at this restaurant. I ordered a cheese burger. It was really good. I wish there was one where I live. I would eat there often. This place is in a farming area. I wonder if they receive grass fed beef. Anyway, I would stop by again when I am heading to Sacramento.
Pleasantly surprised to find this place along the 5 while searching online for something other than the usual fast food choices. Food was good. Place is busy and tables were a hot commodity. Glad we ordered online before we got there.
I was with my wife and son, driving back from San fransico to los angeles. Wanted to have lunch but not typical McDonald's or KFC kind, so we arrived to this place and I was welcomed by a Pakistani who took my order, it was nice to exchange talks and know a little more about life in USA. He was very kind and prepared delicious burger for us. The size, quality and taste was super. Hopefully if we drive that route again we will surely eat there.
It's right next to the gas station and there's no outside seating but the burgers were phenomenal. They also had fresh milkshakes that looked amazing but I didn't partake. The service was fast and kind. If you're looking for a solid option to the national chain fast food restaurants, try this local gem.
Needed a quick bite on way home to OC so we stopped here based on all the great reviews and boy are we glad! The burgers are awesome - made hot and juicy and loaded with everything (lettuce, tomato grilled onions, pickles)! The Cajun Tators and Onion rings were good, not great but they made the meal complete LoL We finished it off with an Oreo cookie milkshake - so good, better than in-n-out

Fresh, clean, fast. All the food was hot and yummy. service was fast too. Thank you for the great food
10/10 burgers every time!! service was really great and fast too. I would recommend the A1 Steakhouse burger. Amazing quality, definitely recommend this place for a food stop
Much better than I expected and I expected a good burger. This place was definitely worth the stop for fresh fries and fresh beef.

A really good midway restaurant you should try! the service was so fast although they are a little bit short-staffed. All the staff were nice and friendly to customers. The food was fresh. Onion rings and fries were the best, we ordered the Buffalo chicken sandwich with a giant piece of chicken no tomatoes and a small slice of lettuce. It was delicious and fresh but not the best. They have a good portion of salad as well. There is no restroom in the restaurant, you need to go to the gas station beside this place to use the restroom and wash your hand. There was no hand sanitizer in the restaurant.
Good burgers just pretty pricey it was 20 bucks for their simplest combo. The Burger are small but yummy it will fill you but you won't be stuffed. If money is not an issue it's a good place to eat
Good burgers and sandwiches, but a bit pricey.
Annoying flies in the dining area despite a zapper. Good food but $50 for two people is taking too much advantage of their location as the only food on this side of the road
We had the Classic Burger and the Cajun Burger—both packed with flavor and cooked just right. The tater tots were crispy and satisfying, a perfect side. Everything tasted fresh and well-prepared. This Wayback is connected to a gas station with a mini mart, giving it that no-frills, road-trip vibe. The service was friendly and efficient, which made the stop even better. Definitely a solid place to grab a bite.
Food is good fast service, decent for the area. The fries were a little burned.
This was possibly the best burger I've had in years. It was freshly cooked, had light leafy lettuce (maybe butter lettuce) instead of iceberg, a really fresh tomato, and two still hot patties. I had the tots as a side and they were good with a lemonade for the tasty beverage. The have salt and pepper shakers! The staff was really nice. The one bad thing about this location was that most of the tables were in need of bussing so the seating was limited.
Fresh made burgers! Absolutely delicious. This is the best place on I-5 to stop for a burger. Their fresh made shakes are also amazing. The service is fairly quick and they offer free wi-fi. The restrooms are clean and is a good place to stop. They are attached to a gas station, so that makes it doubly convenient. It looks like they have a drive thru, but it wasn't quite set up yet.
NOT HALAL!! I’m sure the food is perfectly nice but it’s advertised as halal online for some reason and when we drove over and asked they confirmed the meat is not halal and so we travelled for no reason, just be aware 👍
Had a classic burger with no bun. It was tasty and meet expectations for the price. I'd definitely go back - it's a solid choice to get a burger.
We did a takeout. The burgers were good. We tried the Dubai Swirl and is the worst shake I have had. Whipped cream and swirled with a horrible synthetic tasting Pista syrup.
1st time, good burger double smash burger style. Rest eh. Shake was a little too sweet. Not fast food all we're cooked from scratch, took 20+m. Watch the movie "The Founder" why McD put places like this outta biz, Wayback.
Good burgers. BBQ sauce had a nice kick. Fried Pickle Chips and Cheese Curds were very tasty. Milkshakes were hand dipped. Restrooms were port-a-potties outside.
We discovered this place while stopping at Mobil gas on the way home from SoCal. We wanted shakes, but then my son saw how good the burgers looked, so he ordered a burger and fries. We were not disapointed! They have the best shakes I've ever tasted. I love that they put an actual brownie in my shake and my sons had red velvet cake in their shakes. I can't wait to try their food. Although I'll have to go to one in the town I live in and was happy to discover that there are several in the county I stay in. But if we are ever on the road again, we will stop at this location.
Set your expectations right and you’ll be satisfied. Had a double cheese burger hot off the grill, tasted fine. It was as satisfying as a place like In-N-Out, but unsatisfying compared to a place like The Melt. Great tater tots.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Wayback Burgers Review Food: The burgers are made fresh to order and come with a good variety of options, from classics to specialty builds. The flavor is satisfying, and the portions are generous. The milkshakes are a standout, rich and creamy, complementing the meal perfectly. Service: The staff is efficient, courteous, and keeps the process moving smoothly. Orders are handled promptly, and the experience feels consistent and reliable. Final Summary: Wayback Burgers is a solid choice when craving a hearty, well-made burger. The food quality and dependable service make it a great casual spot. I’m giving it 4 out of 5 stars — a strong experience overall, with just a little room for improvement to reach 5 stars.
Got this spot in the way to LA. It was better than many fast food chains around the area. We got chicken burger and two garden burger with onion rings. The burger was fresh and the patty was juicy. The onion rings were also great and not too oily. Their service was amicable and the done in is a cozy place.
Little place attached to a AmPm but a good restaurant for sure! Staff was super busy and a sign asked for patience with them so they must be short staffed regularly, but they still did a good job and the wait wasn't long. The food was really good and we would eat there again (if we lived anywhere near one). The key lime pie shake was a little disappointing in lime flavor, but a good shake. I bet the other flavors are great. I had a build your own chicken sandwich and it was great. Burger also good and fries were OK. Chicken strips were really good and great quality chicken for sure. Good ehite meat. We'd try the fried pickles next time. Only downside is it's definitely pricey. More than just the rising prices everywhere. Our meal really added up.
Don't think of this as fast food. Service was OK. They were kinda busy at 2:30pm, but minimal friendliness when taking order and very slow to get food (15 min). And not a single THANK YOU from any employee...and there were several working today. When order came up, I asked if there were napkins already in the bag, and the guy said nothing and pointed to a napkin canister that happened to be empty...so thanks for that, ha. We have plenty of napkins in the car... Food was pricey... ~$50 for 4 burgers & fries. Now this is a step up from other fast food burgers, but still not sure the value was worth the price. Quality of meat was not the highest but decent, but toppings were fresh ingredients so we enjoyed that. Better than McD's quality for certain...
It was a nice discovery driving on hwy 5. Classic burgers with decent flavor. Their shakes were very tasty. But I was a bit disappointed with the Rodeo. The patty was smaller than shown, nothing close to the picture. Flavor was ok. Besides that, the fries, salad, and the double bacon burger were excellent.
I was surprised to find this hidden gem off the freeway. Especially since it was combined next ti the gas station. Great tasting burgers that reminded me like a smash burger type. I enjoyed the fries…

Good burger. Had it for the first time. fries were also fresh and hot.\nCost for combo was $20 (reg. Drink and fries). Wud have expected it to be under $20.

Nice burger chain with great variety of burgers, sandwiches, Hot Dogs and milkshakes. Ordered the classic ($8.49). Burger was super fresh and prepared within 10min. Taste: Missed a flavorful burger sauce. The sour taste of the pickles overshadowed the rest all other ingredients. Wished it came with raw onion rings instead of chopped onions. Online order is available, so you can skip the line. Restrooms are located in the gas station adjacent to Wayback burger.
Food was good, nothing special about it. They had a dispenser with lemonade that was full of foam, almost as if they had just put soap to clean it and forgot to do it. I had to bring it up as one in my group only wanted lemonade. The workers had no clue about it! I certainly hope the dispenser was shut down and taken to the back quickly as it was still on while we had our meal. We were there close to 30 minutes.
Burgers are overpriced, while smaller than those pictured in menu, with average taste. Service is slow. Incessant fly jumped on my food.
I mean you're somewhere in the central valley what could you expect.? The staff was very friendly and courteous. The food was alright, I got a cheese steak and a shake. The cheese steak was not terrible but nothing to write home about. It was a little weird they used cheddar. The shake was pretty good, cinnamon toast crunch flavored.
The burger was good and the fries were pretty decent. It's pretty convenient as it's about halfway between SF and LA so it made for a good pit stop during the journey.
Overpriced and lacking flavor. Just go to the McDonald's across the street. Staff took forever to make mediocre food
Sandwich was good, not 13 bucks good though. The soggy fries definitely not worth 7 bucks. And first time for me asked to tip at a fast food restaurant. Kinda a funky smell in there, that may be just this area IDK.
Pros: The burger was good. Better than McDonald's or Carl's jr. It tasted like a higher quality. They offered a variety of condiment flavors to dip fries in, which was fun to try. Cons: it was over $40 for two adults. The food was warm but not hot, which was odd because it was made fresh. There was a very long queue to use the single ordering kiosk, and it took a long time to order, and then receive the food. I'm glad I tried it because I've passed by the restaurant many times wondering about it, but I won't return.
About halfway between the Bay Area and LA on I-5 is this little burger stop called “Wayback burgers“ I tried what they call a “Cajun“ burger that has some kind of spicy sauce and pepper jack cheese plus bacon. Pretty good food, you’re surrounded by desert. There’s also a gas station… And I like it because it’s also halfway so that’s a good stopping/resting point. What’s your preferred rest stop along I-5 on the way to LA?
Driving to LA on I5 and needed to eat. The cheeseburgers and fries were good. The tea, lemonade and milkshakes- not so much. The food was made fresh to order which was nice.

Grabbed two burgers , buffalo crispy chicken and the steakhouse. Buffalo burger was significantly better than the steakhouse. Not sure how the steakhouse burger is made but we only took two bites and then threw it away. Not worth the money in my opinion.
Fries are ok, I don't think they had any salt. The bacon was typical super thin fast food restaurant style. The burger was good but not worth the money. $22+ for a double "bacon" burger, ok fries, and a drink is a little crazy when you can go to down the street and get InN'Out for 1/2 the price. I'd compare Wayback Burger to the fancier McDonald's 1/4lb or Carl's Jr burger. This place won't make it if there is a Five Guys around. Five Guys is the same price and MUCH better quality. Oh, and the burger is a mustard forward flavor. Like Whataburger, which is also better and cheaper.
Sad place. Overpriced burgers with no discernable taste served by uninspired employees who look like they'd rather be somewhere else. There is nothing compelling or even interesting about this place. Hard pass next time.
The food is pretty bad. Steakhouse burger had such a vinegary taste, I could barely finish it. Cheese fries were bitter
Horribly understaffed and overworked workers. They are utilizing the screen where you order and pay instead of an actual cashier, but the options and prices on the screen do not match the large displayed menu. It took us a full hour to order and get our food, which was mediocre. Burgers were juicy but for the price was expecting a much better product. Left unsatisfied. Ketchup dispenser was out the entire time.
Burger is small and there’s nothing special about it other that it needed flavor It needed salt at least specially since it was suppose to be the Cajun burger but no seasoning at all Could have gotten a better tasting burger and bigger for that matter anywhere else for half the price of $12.99 Milkshake was $8.99 and as you can see it’s a very small cup It was tasty and although I expected brownie chunks like pictured on the menu it did taste like brownie Definitely wouldn’t recommend it but to each their ow It does not come with fires and such They’re sold separately starting at $4.99

Food was not good, stuff wasn't priced correctly. I ordered a burger that they had listed on the menu and they charged me for add ons. But I didn't add anything, it just already came on the burger.…
cockroaches in the chillies french fries; at least the manager told me he was going to put out roach traps
They advertise Heinz ketchup, but they use: Red Gold Tomato Ketchup. This is what they gave us for our fries. This is what goes on the burgers. Their menu says Heinz Ketchup all over it. Heinz is going to love hearing about these place using their name but NOT their product.
"Cheesesteak" must be removed from that menu, cause that's definitely NOT what they're serving! It was like ground beef & American cheese on a hotdog bun! Expensive AF & food is nowhere near what is shown! That garbage MAYBE wished it tasted like Arby's Beef'n Cheddar, but it had zero (0) concept of what cheesesteak is!
Slowest service, inaccurate order, waste. How did just pay $16 to wait for over 10 minutes to get some fast food fries to go? The fries/tots were completely flavorless, drenched in grease. Was in such a hurry to finally get back on the road that I didn’t notice that I hadn’t even received the sauces I ordered to go with them. Inedible. Won’t come back.
Had to ask for a refund bcuz after watching them handle food without washing hands before putting gloves on and the flies landing in the layer out buns waiting for the party to finish cooking.
I have not tasted the food but I already had to wait 30 watching 3 parties try to figure out their 'fancy self ordering' machine... I'm too hungry to walk away 😭
Definitely This is not hand crafted burgers. They were using regular patties from manufacturer supplies.
I waited 25 mins for tenders. The buffalo sauce was gross. Super disappointed. Not worth it.
Reviews say it’s decent but it was below decent. Pretty disappointing. My husband and I both think McDonald’s is better than this… so go ahead and save some money and go to McDonald’s instead.
Found this place while searching for lunch spots on the way to Universal, and thought the menu looked great! Boy, was I in for a rude awakening! The cheese fries are on the menu as having "cheese sauce" but the ones I got were melted slices of cheese, not even melted all the way. The chicken strips were those overly crunchy gross things. And then the inside itself was really unclean. Thick layers of dust on the napkin dispensers, sticky tables, and lots of gnats (dead and alive) lining the windows. Take my advice and don't stop here!
