Opinions de Meson Don Felipe London
We were able to pick our own table, which immediately made the experience feel relaxed and guest-focused rather than rushed. The staff were friendly, approachable, and attentive without being overbearing — service felt natural and well paced throughout. The wine was served nicely chilled and I appreciated being offered a taste before committing to the glass, which added a more polished touch to the service. The menu is extensive, but it’s structured well, so there’s plenty of choice without it feeling confusing or overwhelming. It caters to different tastes while still feeling curated. The venue itself was clean and well kept, including the table setup and surrounding areas, which always makes a difference. The food was very tasty, well presented, and clearly prepared with care. Overall, a well-run spot with good service standards, strong menu design, and quality food.
This is a restaurant that must be protected. In a city of bland and low value chains, pumping out micro portions of nouvelle tapas at the price that feels like a tragedy we have a shining beacon of hospitality. From the gorgeous wood panelling and mid century art work to the goblets of Spanish exiler, this place is good times. Highly underrated food and charming staff ("I might order a salad for health" "happiness is health, order what you like!") give me meson don Felipe over Brindisa any day of week. On a serious note - the courgette, mint and rocket salad is absolutely shining and I always enjoy the manchego and jamon. This is also a great place for a group with mixed dietary needs with many options for veggies and gf folk.
We've been visiting this restaurant in The Cut for the past 15 years. Always a good atmosphere both lunchtimes and evenings. The menu has been reduced from the 'old times' but still offers a selection of meat, fish and veg tapas. Today we had whitebait, pork meatballs and a pepper and onion mix, the 3 cheese board, coffees, cocktails and wine. Recommended.
In the vicinity of Waterloo station, this Spanish restaurant excels over many others competitors of different cuisines with its tapas. We visited this place twice and both experiences are fantastic. The first time we ordered squid, quedo Manchego and mushrooms. This time we ordered octopus, fresh anchovies fillets and spinach. They are all very delicious. We could tell that they are nicely marinated and cooked. Of course you can’t compare their price to those in Madrid but for a eatery in the hub of downtown London, it’s already very affordable and competitive. I would definitely come back again.
The lunch deal for paellas is probably the most value for money deal! So much food with great quality paella.
Last Friday, following a long workweek, my colleagues and I ventured to Meson Don Felipe for a well-deserved dinner. Nestled in the heart of the city, the restaurant greeted us with a warm ambiance and the promise of exquisite Spanish cuisine. Eager to indulge our palates, we wasted no time in ordering a variety of dishes to share. Our selection included the classic Gambas, the tantalizing Calamares Tinta, and the comforting Tortilla. To accompany our meal, we opted for a carafe of Beronia Crianza, a delightful choice that perfectly complemented the flavors of our meal. Each dish that graced our table was a testament to the culinary prowess of the kitchen. The Gambas, succulent and perfectly seasoned, left us longing for more with each bite. The Calamares Tinta, with its rich flavor and tender texture, proved to be a highlight of the evening. And the Tortilla, a comforting classic, exceeded our expectations with its depth of flavor and impeccable execution. While the food undoubtedly impressed, we couldn't help but notice the bustling atmosphere of the restaurant. The lack of sound absorbers contributed to a noisy environment, detracting slightly from an otherwise enjoyable dining experience. Despite this minor inconvenience, the servers remained attentive and friendly throughout the evening, ensuring that our needs were met with efficiency and warmth. Their hospitality added to the overall charm of the restaurant and left a lasting impression on our group. In terms of value, Meson Don Felipe exceeded our expectations. The price of the food was more than justified by the quality of the ingredients and the skillful execution of each dish. We departed the restaurant with satisfied appetites and fond memories, eager to return for another culinary adventure in the near future.
Had a lovely dinner here by sharing a few tapas and a pitcher of sangria. Loved the atmosphere and service was excellent. Loved every bit of the food and would definitely come again to try other things from the menu.
I have been here a number of times and have never been disappointed with the food. This time we had a few tapas for a late lunch: excellent albondigas and iberico ham croquettes. The chorizo was fine too. The garlic prawns could have been seasoned . I had the rose of the month and my companion had a very good red wine. All in all an excellent time with good service.
Cute little Spanish wine bar and restaurant on The Cut with a friendly staff, nice wine list and a menu that will offer some quality Spanish dishes that you won’t get at many places in Waterloo. Has a lively feel to it, nice atmosphere and good location.
Foods were great. But, Alexandra is the best, while other member of the staff could not care less. Alexandra was very kind, professional and well manners. Other staff were just disappointment and could not be bothered with anything.
Went here for a late lunch on a Saturday, so it was nice and quiet between the lunch and pre theatre dinners. Food was delicious, and staff very helpful.
Authentic and beautifully executed tapas complemented by a carefully selected wine list. An old favourite for Waterloo locals that always has a warm, buzzy atmosphere. Great date location. Decent number of outdoor tables but if you want to sit inside and there are more than two of you it is best to book ahead.
This restaurant is fantastic! Authentic, delicious Spanish food, good prices for London. Service is always outstanding and the restaurant itself is very pretty inside. Would recommend booking as it's very busy. Allergens included on the menu!
I'm usually a little disappointed with tapas in the UK which varies from terrible to decent with a heavy price tag. Was surprised that this restaurant was both reasonably priced, decent portion sizes and flavour similar to what you'll find on Spain. Out of the 6 six dishes I ordered, my favourite was the "Higaditos". The other dishes were great, "Calamares en su tinta" was so-so. I would recommend and is handily located opposite to the Young Vic if you have a play to see.
The atmosphere here was beautiful, and made me feel as though i was back in Spain. The service was very welcoming and very friendly, which made this experience even better. The food was reasonably priced and had a lot of different options. We ordered quite a few items off the menu, and all were delicious, and came in generous portions however one that stood out the most for me was the garlic chicken. The flavour was exquisite and was perfect in every bite. The patatas bravas were very good, however could be improved if the potatoes were crispier and came with garlic mayonnaise aswell as tomato sauce. However my evening here was very enjoyable and i can’t wait to come here again!
The restaurant seems popular with locals. It was quite noisy and crowded during lunchtime. We were lucky to get a table. Staff were friendly. We had the seafood paella, a mixed salad and the churros. Everything was delicious. We saw they have a takeaway paella station outside the restaurant. It seems quite popular too, judging by the queue
What a gem! Very traditional tapas bar with so much history. Loved sangria, and sherry as aperitivo. Olives were so delicious, you can tell are made in the house. Manchego and Jamon my top. Very, nice buzzing ambience, welcomes everyone. Will be back.
What a great place to have some authentic Spanish food. The atmosphere is great and the staff are very attentive. Food is really tasty !
Perennial tapas favourite of ours, doing the classics and doing them very well. Never have a bad meal here. Definitely worth booking to avoid disappointment.
Brilliant food, friendly and funny waiting staff, and a lovely warm atmosphere. The red sangria is delicious, as are the croquettes and the patatas bravas. Highly recommend.
Service a little slow, but it was a busy Saturday night. Concise, quality menu. Good selection of sherry. Knowledgeable staff. Great atmosphere. Would go again!
A Tapas bar that actually feels like a real one, not just a restaurant serving Spanish food! Relaxed atmosphere, attentive service; a really good experience. Also right opposite the Young Vic, if you need a pre-theatre meal and drink.
Lovely Spanish quality food, so tasty and fresh. Served promptly. Very friendly and attentive service. Can't believe it's been so long since we visited, will be back soon
I haven't visited Meson Don Felipe for a few years and I can honestly say it is even better than before. The food is delicious, probably better than any Tapas I've eaten in Madrid, Barcelona or on beach holidays. The staff are exceptional and the atmosphere friendly and joyful. I enjoyed the experience and would definitely visit again...SOON.
Whenever we are in London, which isn't that often, my wife and I try to experience different places to eat or drink. Meson Don Felipe however was so good thenfirst time we went, we had to go again and it didn't disappoint. The food was outstanding, as was the wine. The service was attentive but not pushy and we didn't feel rushed. If you like Spanish food, this place is a must. If you don't like Spanish food, give this a try and you'll probably change your mind. We can't single out one dish that stood out as they were all fab.
I recently visited Meson Don Felipe with a table of six around 7:30pm, and even though the restaurant was absolutely buzzing, the experience couldn’t have been better. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive from the moment we arrived, making us feel welcome despite the crowd. The restaurant has a very traditional Spanish feel with its charming old style decor and high stool seating that adds to the authentic tapas bar vibe. Because it gets very busy and crowded, I’d definitely recommend booking in advance to make sure you get a good spot. A special shoutout to Mirko and the team, whose warm welcome and amazing service really stood out. We will be back!
An old favourite my first time back for years it was very busy but they squeezed me in at the bar. The tapas was fresh and tasty. It came quickly despite the crowd. The most authentic Spanish experience in the area. The outdoor tables were closed because of the weather.
We were able to walk in at 5pm on a Wednesday evening— they did ask that we spend less than the usual 2 hour limit as they had an upcoming reservation at 6:45. No problem for us as we were dining with our quickly fading toddler. The entire menu was fantastic— and the service even better. They even let my husband and I practice our very limited Spanish :) This place has been added to my “must goes” while in London and I will be recommending it to everyone I know. It’s quaint and you’ll be sitting so close to your neighbors that you’ll smell their food, but I think that’s the point.
We arrived here while the restaurant was very busy but the staff managed to get a space at the bar for us. All the staff are friendly and atmosphere intimate and authentically spanish! Food was excellent and the friendly Sardinian man behind bar recommend the special Prawns, which were delicious 😋. Thank you bringing me my birthday treat! Hope to come again!
It's been open since 1987 for a reason! Always great food, served promptly. The Chorizo, Calamari and Tortilla were highlights. Pleasant service. Would recommend.
This place is definitely a go-to. The octopus and pork were both amazing, some of the best I've had. Service was a bit on the quiet side, but the food more than made up for it. Highly recommend.
Very lovely atmosphere and attentive staff! The food was good but nothing particularly special. I was a big fan of the tortilla española and the gambas al ajillo were super juicy!!! I personally wasn’t a fan of the croquetas de jamón ibérico and think I should’ve got the meatballs instead (they smelt and looked amazing)
A nice joint serving classic tapas, with friendly service. Table of 6, Outdoor seating, dinner, weekday The tapas on offer are great! Cant go wrong with any of them. Some standouts include the Albondigas and Gambas de Ajillo. The charcuterie was really well done! Give their Sangria a shot. Prices are average. Staff are helpful and friendly! Do be aware that if you were to sit outdoors and it was a cold day, there would be a chance you'd be getting a seat with no heater. Bring a blanket! A pleasant and lively atmosphere with groups of friends and families just enjoying wonderful food 👌
Really fresh, authentic tapas in a great location. We went for a pre-show meal and sat outside to enjoy the weather. We've been to Spain a lot, and this is some of the closest tapas we've had in London. The gazpacho soup was incredible.
Delicious food and lovely atmosphere. The tapas portions were perfect, we shared six tapas for three people. We recommend the pollo paella (chicken paella)! Super friendly and kind staff. It’s a great restaurant for dinner with friends or date night.
This Tapas offering was a wonderful option for pre-play dinner at The Vic! The staff and service was excellent and were well fed in an hour or so. The selections were varied and well seasoned and the meatballs were a favorite.
Loud, very loud and tightly squeezed in but food in general very good, some exceptional pieces like the chicken and Spanish omelette and some average like the octopus and prawns in garlic. In general good and we will definitely be returning
I stopped by this restaurant after work, drawn in by its cozy atmosphere and the genuinely kind staff. Unfortunately, the food didn’t quite meet expectations. Most dishes were rather tasteless, the Iberian ham was extremely tough and overly salty, and the aioli turned out to be a dense mayonnaise with just a hint of garlic. On the plus side, the meat was impressively tender, though sadly lacking in flavor. It’s a shame, as the place has real potential, but I don’t think I’ll be coming back.
Not quite sure how we managed to spend £150 for what was pretty average food on a Wednesday afternoon. Service was attentive and an OK atmosphere but like a lot of Tapas in the UK, I came away feeling slightly cheated.
Confusing reviews here, as someone people seem to really rate this place and some people not so much. We came here at about 9pm which is maybe why things were not what we expected, but the restaurant was very busy. We stood by the “wait here to be seated” and no one attended to us, even though staff had seen us. We then tried to get someone’s attention and were ignored. After entering the restaurant we were shown to the bar, but there was not a lot of warmth or welcome. After sitting for a while, no one came to take our order so again we tried to get the attention of someone to no avail. Eventually someone at the bar took our order with little interaction. We ordered six tapas plates. Padron peppers- okay, nothing to write home about Iberica ham- so so, quite tough and rigid Tortilla- VERY dry. Hard to get through Calamari- batter was like cheap chip shop batter rather than crispy squid Croquettes- again okay Paella- felt like it had been made and put into the dish a while ago and just heated up, as it had formed to the shape of the dish and again was quite dry. Overall felt like everything (including us!) needed a bit more love. Nothing was terrible but nothing was great, and paying for this was a bit of a tough gig. Could easily pay less for a lot nicer food and service elsewhere in London. They are very lucky to have the location of a captive market and convenience. It’s unlikely we’ll be back or be recommending which is a shame
It’s a while since I had been so I thought I’d pay it a visit. The atmosphere is so authentically Spanish. The Dominican Republic waiter chatted with me; he is a lovely chap. The squid was very rubbery and the pan con tomato looked a bit of a mess and was just ok. The croquetas were great. I’d love to come back here for the atmosphere and service, maybe I have to choose different dishes next time.
The food is still very good, but not the service. Our waitress knocked over a glass and beer bottle on our table, shattering the glass and spilling the beer over all five of our group. As no alternative table was offered, two of us stood out of the way while the staff cleared up. No apology was offered at any point. Our meal progressed and when the bill came it included a 12.5% service charge. I asked for this to be removed, which after much discussion and with some reluctance by the waiter eventually happened. No sign of front of house management. Not really the fault of the waitress as she seemed badly trained and not to realise she shouldn't try to set down a tray of four beer bottles with glasses balanced on top.
I find the food so so. The pork meatballs are not bad if you’re tomato sauce lover but nothing special and the pork is gamey. The seafood paella is disappointing as it’s quite fishy and the taste wasn’t nice. They had shrimps and many are pregnant w eggs. They are small and hard. Calarmari is average. Avoid ordering the sangria which taste like cordial mostly. They added only 1 small slices of orange and lemon each which hardly makes a proper sangria Perhaps this place is for more for performance but skip it if you want food
The food is quite bad and is not typical Spanish. They have a good selection of Spanish wines but you should stick only to that since the food is not what you would expect from a Spanish restaurant. The atmosphere is good and the service is ok.
The food was poor. Tasteless. We ordered 6tapas and not one was impressive. Really disappointing. The sangria was nice but I think that’s because I haven’t drank many so I wouldn’t know the difference. Beige foods, needed more seasoning, really poor representation of Spanish food.
Lovely traditional decor. Booking didn't show and despite the fact they weren't busy it was a bit like Fawlty Towers on arrival. Waiter took water order twice and forgot to bring it then asked if we wanted drinks 5 mins later. Bizarre as they were only half full and well staffed. Food was mediocre sadly. The paella had clearly been cooking (outside) for way too long and was pretty salty yet tasteless). Basics like jamon serrano and cheso were tasty. Prawns were nice. Salad was terrible and smothered with dressing. Padron peppers nice but overly salted. So much potential and some great reviews so perhaps a bad day? Won't be back when so many fantastic nearby restaurants like Taz, Rosa's Thai and even Franco Manca would have been better. A let down which was a shame. As other reviewer says this place definitely has potential but they need a visit from Gordon Ramsey on kitchen nightmares to whip them into shape!
I find myself caught between a rock and a hard place in writing the review. In summary, food good, service to a point good. I appreciate restaurants have time slots but to think we had over 30 minutes to go and I kid you not, aggressive reminders by one particular staff member tipped it over the edge with the manager jumping in and I mean that literally, to defend staff. Will we go there again, it's a big fat NO. Food was good but not that great to feel we were in a bullfight. Very disappointed. Perhaps staff and management should learn on not what you say but how you say it and learn some constraints not to make physical gestures to customers then complain when they get the same back. Rudest place I have ever dined.
Nice food at reasonable pricing but they count the clock to kick you out of the table. We had a booking for 4 people. Two of us arrived 15 minutes early and were seated immediately, since there were plenty of free tables. This was when they started the counter clock of our table (not joking they have an actual counter for each table). At 1h 45min past, the waiter came to our table and said that she needs to have the table back in 10min, at which point were trying to order our desserts. They brought our desserts in 5min and forced us to eat it in 5min whilst we managed to pay our bill. My friend expressed his disappointment because of the stress we went through. As a response we were shown by the waitress our counter clock, which was at 1h 58min when we literally stepped out of the restaurant door. That's how we came to know about the counter clock. If you don't mind an express meal under 1h 45h you can try it. If you don't want to deal with waitresses, who are waiting for kicking you out, I am sure there are other places where you can have better experience.
Nice staff and good atmosphere but the food is terrible - felt like it has been sitting in the kitchen for too long. Padron peppers were cold; manchego was plain (never had mediocre manchego before); tortilla was rank and patatas bravas stodgy and lukewarm. Not acceptable for the price.
I really don’t know what happened here. The shrimp was partially raw. The sauce that came with the pork meatballs was objectively oversalted, and I mean a lot. I don’t think anyone in the kitchen had tasted it. Everything else was kind of okay-ish, except the sangria, which was nice. We waited more than 15 minutes to be served, until the bar lady noticed and called her colleague. I wish we had just left the restaurant at that point.
