An amazing pub with fantastic food. Portions are generous, and tasty. Bookings are a must on weekends, as the pub becomes very full. But is both dog and child friendly. A good range of vegetation pub options. Don't miss out on the deserts.

Been here a few of times and the food it bang on - great roasts, loads of flavours and top desserts. Lively but chilled atmosphere as well and some disturbing taxidermy on the wall which is always good. Kid friendly or trying their best to be kid friendly, the place is usually so busy, you just have to squeeze the buggy, etc in where ever theres a gap, and make sure your toddler drink someone’s drink

Really lovely place with some nice outdoor seating. Had the and chips and it was amazing, couldn’t recommend it more. The staff were so kind and attentive. Will definitely be returning here again!

Great casual gastropub - recommend the scotch egg and beef wellington (comes nicely with chips, gravy and bacon-topped veg). Decent beer selection, great service at bar and table, plus nicely close to Victoria Park. Cool London maps in the bathroom too!

*Update 13/12/23 - They have a local craft pale on draft which is nice and hoppy. The Beef Wellington was fantastic as it was last time and the service and staff was friendly and welcoming.* Original post (December 2021) - I'll get my one tiny negative out the way - please get better craft and cask beer on? You have some amazing breweries nearby (Old Street & Howling Hops to name 2) please please get some proper craft or cask ales - not just Doom Bar (owned by Molson Coors) and Beavertown (Owned by Heineken) these aren't craft. Anyway, aside from that minor detail this place is fantastic! Friendly staff, talkative and relaxed but very efficient and professional. The Beef Wellington was absolutely amazing, me and my mate ordered one each - they are meant for 2 people however we both hadn't eaten all day in anticipation of this meal and we both cleared our plates. The fillet of beef was tender and served medium-rare, it was seasoned very well and as Ramsay would say, it was 'beautiful'. The beef basically melted in your mouth. The duxelle was free of water and the deep earthy taste from the mushrooms was top notch. The puff party was cooked well being light and crispy. This was served with a side of beans, stem brocoli and cabbage all again, well seasoned and cooked just right with only a slight crunch. Lovely. This came with a gravy boat. A further side of triple cooked hand made chips was also served, these were also lovely and fluffy with a crunchy skin. We shared a bottle of red with this and it paired with the meal perfectly In Central London you'd pay over £70 just for the Wellington alone. This pub, being quiet and sofisticated yet laid back with some awesome music (most of which I noted featured in the The Inbetweeners as a coincidence, which was a fun twist) meant for me we had good value for money too, considering the rising costs of ingredients such as the fillet. Would certainly return for another Beef Wellington and a bottle. Hats off to the chef and the barman for a top afternoon!

A fabulous meal, one of the best beef wellingtons I've ever had and £44 for 2 people. We were also celebrating so ordered a bottle of Laurent Perrier Rosé champagne which was delicious and fairly reasonable at £90 (considering restaurant mark ups). Lovely service and the lavatories are really nice. To note, they are unisex loos, which I had no issues with but some people question

Best Sunday roast in London!! Would not miss it!!! The scotched eggs were surprisingly delicious and the beef wellington was amazing. Would definitely come back

One of the best veggie burgers I've had - really tasty! The waiting staff were polite and pleasant. My only complaint is that it was quite chilly inside when I visited in January, I wasn't very comfortable.

Excellent place. The Sunday roast was brilliant. The team here is extremely sweet, friendly and attentive. They made our birthday dinner memorable. Thank you for the lovely evening.

A fantastic, 5-star pub, that serves great food, a tasty range of drinks and at decent prices for London. All types of people are welcome (please nice people only). Plus, the staff are THE ABSOLUTE BEST!! Happy to have a natter and always a laugh. The only downside is the new till system which slows the flow of service down a bit as it makes the staff’s lives much more complicated. A couple months back they could serve you with just a few taps on their screen and now it can take them a few minutes to put through a simple order. Definitely not putting it on the staff’s in anyway as they’re all brilliant. Highly recommend management switches it back to the old system. I can’t recommend The Hemingway enough, superb on any day of the week!!

Our very favourite spot for a Sunday Roast! Food is delicious and service is fast, friendly team. Make sure you book a table as they are usually quite busy ;)

Despite the previous reviews I am writing based on my experience here today on a weekday lunch. Came here early to avoid any crowd and managed to get a seat outside with the sunny weather. I ordered the beef wellington as there are not many restaurants in London that serves this wonderful dish. Although on the menu it mentioned for two, if you have a big appetite then you can finish it with no issue. That’s what happened to me 😀. Overall the wellington was cooked medium rare and perfect juicy. Loved the stuffing they made for this. I would definitely recommend you to go for this if you want something different. I was the first customer to order this and it does have a long wait of 45 minutes for this which was mentioned to me by the server. Overall this is definitely a nice gastropub in East London near Victoria Park to have a good meal.

The service was great The pub is very nice and it was quiet We had a good time We would go back

We went here for lunch before a festival at Victoria park. Staff are very attentive, food is of a very good standard and plenty to choose from at the bar. They specialise in handmade scotch eggs which are awesome. Highly recommend this place.

The Hemingway — East London’s Laid-Back Gem Nestled near Victoria Park, The Hemingway blends classic pub warmth with a touch of East London cool. It’s not trying to be trendy — and that’s exactly why it works. Whether you’re there for a pint, a Sunday roast, or a quiet chat, it’s welcoming, unfussy, and full of personality. Why it’s a great spot: Seasonal British menu — hearty mains, fresh starters, and comforting desserts Sunday roasts — generous portions, crispy potatoes, and rich gravy Craft beers and wines — well-curated and reasonably priced Dog-friendly and family-friendly — relaxed and inclusive Eclectic décor — vintage touches, bookshelves, and a lived-in feel Atmosphere: Cosy corners and warm lighting — ideal for slow evenings Friendly staff — attentive without being overbearing Local crowd — a mix of creatives, families, and long-time regulars Outdoor seating — perfect for sunny afternoons

Tasted great and they followed my vegetable requests kindly and gave me many more carrots when I couldn’t have broccoli and cabbages

We had a really good Christmas lunch there -- and with very generous portions of both beef and turkey (not the usual couple of large, paper-thin slices so many similar establishments serve up for the same price.) However, a bit stingy on the gravy...and why no horseradish or mustard with the beef? But these are small complaints! Definitely a Five Star experience.

Emma was absolutely amazing! So welcoming and hospitable! One of the best roasts i’ve ever been to. The food was divine! Highly recommend coming here for food or a drink!!

I recently visited for supper and absolutely loved the relaxed, welcoming atmosphere of the pub. I chose the burger, which was genuinely delicious and beautifully cooked. The staff couldn’t have been better. The only, very minor, downside was the lack of cask ale options, but that’s purely personal, as I’m a sucker for a Sussex Best. Overall, it was a fantastic visit and I’ll definitely be returning once they sort out the lack of Ales!

We had a large booking for 25 people for Sunday roast and it was absoluletely perfect. We are very grateful for the extra help beforehand in organising the meal and making sure it went smoothly! highly recommended to come here

The lamb roast is pretty good value for money and very tasty. Nice little outdoor area too which makes it a nice spot over summer.

Visited the Hemingway for their Sunday roast the other day. Food was good, the outdoor eating areas were cute, but the service really tied everything together for me. Exceptional!

We visited for Sunday lunch (would recommend booking in advance), it was suuuuuuper busy which meant even on a small table we were fighting to hear each other. All staff seemed to be rushed off their feet, but everyone we spoke to was helpful and pleasant, if not super present . I had a veggie roast, and it was better than alot of other places I've had a veggie roast, but didn't quite hit the mark. The 'veggie' bit didn't really fit with the rest of the plate and was lacking gravy. I think it's a lovely pub, but maybe best not to visit at a super peak time!

V

Huge portion, it’s done nicely like a home cooked meal. However not the best Sunday roast I’ve had, it’s just generous but feels average.

R

Good ambience pub with variety of food option. Overall food presentation and taste are good especially love the scotch eggs, deep fried squid and the chicken liver pate. The dirty hot wings a bit over cooked so missing the chewy texture of meat. The wellington beef was beautifully cooked/ presented, only drawback is the pastry seems a bit too dry and not enough puffy . Staff are friendly and service is good. We went there on Sunday around 12pm. People come thereafter and was very crowded when we leave around 2pm. Advance booking on weekend suggested. They offer also Sunday roast which looks very attractive. Relax environment good for hang out with friends !

Loved my trip to this place. Food was fab. Service was lovely. Great vibe: fun and lively!

Really fancied a beef wellington yesterday and stubled across The Hemingway. Food overall was pretty good. Beef Wellington was cut into 2 big chunks rather than sliced up for presentation. Beef was of good quality and pastry was nice. Sides that come with it are enough, especially if you have starters like we did. Didn't need the mac and cheese but always a nice addition. Good pub lunch.

food was salty and the beef in the wellington was tough, but service was nice

A good lively neighbourhood pub, always busy during the weekend. I tried the Sunday Roast, here the lamb. The meat, stuffing and gravy were excellent but the veggies undercooked. Nonetheless a good experience, next time I'll try the Beef Wellington as it looked really good on other people's tables.

This is a lovely pub indeed and the beef roast is great. However their customer service is not quite where it should be. For the prices of the food and drinks they are positioning themselves quite high but the service level does not reflect that.

The Sunday Roast was amazing and great value for money. Particularly the meats were high quality. Such a nice London pub that could be improved by the service. I tried to make a reservation for 1:00 pm but was offered 12:00 instead which is no big deal. Although I really don’t know why the staff have to say “We need the table back by 1:30” , it’s very annoying and an unprofessional and unwelcoming attitude in the hospitality business. Particularly as the next “reservation” according to the sign was for 3:00 pm and not for 1:30 anyway. At the end of the meal we were well fed and couldn’t manage a dessert which I think would probably be pretty good considering the high standard of the mains. We asked for Irish coffee and were told that the pub doesn’t do hot drinks? A pub not doing hot drinks? All in all the service wasn’t great but the food was amazing.

The veggie roast was not great - first of all, the main was a quarter of a roasted squash with a tablespoon of chickpea stuffing. While I love a good roasted vegetable, I wouldn’t call that a main component of a dish but rather a side, especially in a roast. However, the main issue were "all the trimmings” as stated on the menu - partially cooked broccoli (very tough), three pieces of roasted potatoes, 1 roasted carrot, a chunk of beetroot and unseasoned boiled greens are not the decadent trimmings you would expect from a hearty roast. The Yorkshire pudding was also very dry. The roast could use some tastier sides such as cauliflower cheese, or some seasoned greens such as a creamed leek, maybe even braised cabbage! Overall, quite disappointing and not very filling!

M
Maria Kovba

Good vibes, but slightly disappointed by the service and food quality. Several mix ups with food, Crumble = just butter, not much fruit, and the potatoes with the roast tasted old and reheated.

H
Harriet

We accidentally ended up having a roast here after many glasses of wine and wish we’d gone somewhere else The staff were really friendly and attentive and the vibes were great but the food was terrible Vegetarian roast was a bunch of unseasoned, undercooked vegetables and the ‘roast’ element was just a lump of butternut squash with some rank stuffing and curried puree all over it My friend had the lamb and it was fatty overcooked under seasoned and dry.

L
Lubo Ivan

Oh lord where do I start! This is a lovely pub indeed and the roast is great. However their customer service is not quite where it should be. For the prices of the food and drinks they are positioning themselves quite high but the service level does not reflect that. For instance, yesterday there was a horrific rain and for the people that were sat outside having food that were completely blown away by the tropical storm, the staff were not very supportive/helpful. I would have expected a little bit more when essentially you can see at the second picture everything got soaking wet and people had to leave their food because it got drenched by the rain.

I went to The Hemingway on Sunday, for the Sunday roast and it was not the best. I had the beef fillet roast, the potatoes were so dry and hard. I could have used the potatoes as Balls for a game of cricket. Vegetables was OK nothing special very dry, Yorkshire pudding tasted like sand paper, beef slices was OK. Only reason I gave it a two star is because of the beer, The Hemingway beer was lovely. My second picture shows i couldn't finish the food and how much i left. So, if you want to waste your money then definitely go there.

I used to love this pub but: 1. Beers have gone downhill. They have changed the hazy beers (Hazy machine and XPA) for something really average 2. My GF ordered a fish last time which was inedible. Very overcooked , gritty and tough. 3. Got rid of the ceasar salad. No healthy options anymore 4. Roast is overcooked 5. Music is now terrible. It used to be pretty decent now is commercial and cheesy 6. Bloody Mary is also now watery. It used to be good. Hopefully this is all temporary management!

T
Tom Allen

Disorganised service and very average food (the £28 beef roast was particularly disappointing). We were also shocked to learn there’s no coffee available ... on a cosy Sunday in a pub, hot drink options should be a given. Most people drink coffee these days, and removing it really limits choices for sober guests as well. A staff member said it’s a new rule from the manager, which frankly feels exclusionary and quite senseless, especially in winter.

A
Alana Norris

Probably the worst roast I’ve had in a while. I like my meat rare but this just tasted of blood. Potatoes tasted old. Yorkshire was stodgy. Such a nice pub but the food was very disappointing for the price.

K

Staff are sound. Food is diabolical - tasteless, overpriced and overcooked. Drinks are below average and taste slightly stale. The building is lovely and the outdoor area is decent. Went for Christmas dinner with partner, which was prepaid, and had to send it back because it was so bad - had to actually carve through the potatoes and the vegetables, and the celeriac pie tasted inexplicably like lavender

C
Champs

Came here for a work Xmas meal. Another place that serves vegan food and not vegetarian! Went for the fish and chips which looked amazing but was covered in salt so I couldn’t eat it. The crumble also looked amazing but couldn’t eat it as it was so dry and I thought I might break my teeth on the hard crumble. Very disappointed with the food. Christmas crackers which didn’t crack and had no gift inside. Staff were lovely and friendly and the place is nice but not the best food

E
Edward McLaughlin

Used to be so much better :( recently changed the menu to make it bigger and less good, also changed all the beer selection. Used to have tasty and unusual ones like haze machine but have been swapped for standard beers like Peroni. Staff still good but sad to see such a good pub change for the worse

H
HARRISON TEA

Went for Christmas dinner. We pre-paid and pre-ordered. Staff were great considering they were working on Christmas Day and it was busy. However, food wise it was not great. I had ordered the beef. When it came out I had to ask them if I’d been served pork by mistake based on the how grey it was! No pink whatsoever on the beef and the gravy was so thin and such a small serving (I get that you have to portion control on a day like that but come on!) that it made the rock hard potatoes even harder to eat. We had also pre-ordered a bottle of wine (we have the pre-order email) and when we asked the waiter had no idea about it. We had specifically chosen that wine to pair with our food. We ended going for a picpoul and high was okay but I just don’t understand why we were given the option to pre-order then they change the wine list?

Sunday roast is bland and some veg are undercooked. I was hungry and hate wasting food but I couldn’t continue eating as it smelled funny, the chicken was covered in some kind of seasoning and spice but still bland, and overall just unpleasant. Sad, it used to be good here. Not going back.

L
Lucy Soares

I used to love this place, I used to come here a lot a few years ago. However, at the moment it is completely different that it used to be. We had the worst vegetarian Sunday roast ever. The meat substitute was some sort of mashed potato’s with beans and curry fried in a pancake. All the elements were extremely dry, specially the potatoes. We had to ask for extra gravy sauce, but it was still no good. My partner and I were very disappointed with this food.

D
David John Lewis

I had a mediocre roast, and while the vegetables were good, the potatoes lacked flavour and seemed only just cooked enough to avoid being raw. The wine we ordered was advertised as a 2022 vintage, but it turned out to be from 2024. Although we had a reservation, our table was placed near the waiting area, and when a large family arrived, we found ourselves surrounded by rowdiness. I would suggest that reserved tables be located in quieter areas, while walk-ins could be seated in busier sections. Additionally, the toilets were dimly lit, and the oil diffuser was unpleasant.

p
phoenix ruby

The staff were absolutely lovely, so friendly and welcoming, and the pub itself is gorgeous! Sadly, the food left us a bit puzzled. The beef Wellington arrived with a plate of lettuce (not quite the pairing we expected with gravy!), and the roasts were a little undercooked. Such a shame because everything else, including the service, was spot on.
