It can be a hit or a miss with Chinese food. Our friends introduced this place to us and I am very glad to say that this place was a hit with us. Delicious food and not overly greasy (as in other places). The place is very big and very spacious. Cool staff, they were very busy. This place has vegetarian\vegan options. We ordered Sautéed Mushroom, Vegetarian Eggplant W Garlic Sauce, Vegetarian Mapo Tofu, Steamed Vegetarian Dumplings and Red Bean buns. Absolutely loved all the dishes. The Red Bean buns took forever to come, so order in advance as it takes a while to be cooked. But it was a delightful, very soft bun with yummy filling. Their portions are not very generous as other Chinese places but the food is just so delicious. Would we visit this place again? A hell yes!!
We had so much fun at this restaurant! Chris, our server, was so helpful and friendly. He recommended several dishes we would like as a family of 4 with two teenagers. It is family style and we shared all of the dishes. Everything was delicious. We would absolutely go again when in Long Beach.
Finally got around to eating here. Been craving soup dumplings for a while, wanted to try this place out. Just got the regular pork ones, but while the flavor was great, it did lack the "bite and sip" for more than half of them. The Chongqing chicken, on the other hand, was phenomenal and exactly what I love in Chinese cooking. Meat was juicy, perfectly crispy, and the peppers were balanced between spicy and a little bit of numbing, but NOT overwhelming. Would love to come back and try other things.
Lives up to its reputation. Delicious food, with the (seemingly) homemade noodles a particular standout (we had it around the dumplings and potstickers). Also offer soup dumplings, which include soup broth inside the dumpling…interesting. Spacious, comfortable seating indoors. Outdoor patio on 2nd also available. Currently in the “soft” opening and still working out beverages (no tea our visit, but had soft drinks and sake).
Very happy to finally have a decent chinese restaurant in long beach, hopefully their success will bring more quality Asian restaurant chains into Long Beach. Xlb are juicy, although the skin is not as thin as DTFs. Dan Dan Noodle with the peanut sauce is excellent, the noodle comes out thick with peanut sauce. Very satisfying.
My favorite option for Chinese food in Long Beach. Highly recommend the beef roll and pork/seafood soup dumplings. Plus plenty of beer / sake options! Five stars

I had a wonderful experience at this restaurant. Juan, my server, was exceptionally charming and friendly. He recommended an outstanding dish that I thoroughly enjoyed. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Long Beach—it's now my favorite spot on 2nd Street. Thank you, Juan, for your excellent service.
THANK YOU for amazing service and food. I appreciate such great great service!!! Everyone here was very attentive and friendly.Special shout out to our waitor CHRISTIAN he gave us great recommendations and all of the options we order were scrumptious. The Stirfry noodle, garlic cucumber and the mojitos were soooo yummy 🥰 that's just to name a few things we ordered...We are looking forward to coming back thank you ALL again!! See you soon.
If you love dumplings and yummy fried rice ... it's fairly priced , tasty and fresh. Fave dishes include the shrimp fried rice, garlic green beans ( yeah i don't even love green beans but they add salty garlicky crack here!) and the eggplant with garlic sauce with mushrooms and a dash of pork . Soup dumplings are winner. Potstickers yum. The San Pedro locale has lamb dumplings that they need to add here! Hint hint owners lol. The balance of seasonings here is proper, the fried rice is usually perfect. I'm becoming a regular.
If I could give 100/10 stars to Northern cafe, I would! This is the BEST Northern cafe branch, which is saying a lot because they’re all so good. The food here is outstanding (get the oil spill noodles and of course the dumplings), but what really sets this place apart is the staff. They’re attentive, kind, and will always go the extra mile to make customers feel at home. Eduardo, Paulina, Liam, Juan, Christian, Gladys, Chris, and the whole staff here are one in a million. We’ve become regulars and always leave happier than when we come in thanks to them. Do yourselves a favor and pay them a visit!

I recently visited Northern Cafe and ordered the bok choy, Kung Pao chicken, shrimp dumplings, white rice, and Lao Gan Ma fried noodles with chicken—and everything was excellent. The food was fresh, well-seasoned, and served in generous portions. While every dish was flavorful, the shrimp dumplings were the clear star of the show—perfectly cooked, tender, and absolutely delicious. Service was good with solid customer service, and the restaurant had a nice, clean atmosphere that made the experience even more enjoyable. Overall, it was a great dining experience, and I would definitely return.
Great northern flavors here. Got the pot of beef with potato strips in it - can easily be eaten as two meals. Server was a bit slow and forgetful but the food made up for it.
Just love this little place. My first visit was a few days ago and I will definitely be back soon. The atmosphere is clean and modern, with some big booths near the back that were very comfortable. It's clean, the service is great, and the food was outstanding. We had the soup dumplings and the oil-fried dumplings, both of which were tasty, although the chicken in the fried dumplings was kind of bland. The dipping sauces made up for that though. We also had the yuzu cheesecake - tart and tangy, with little pieces of yuzu throughout. YUM!
For a Chinese northern dumpling restaurant in Long Beach, it’s quite delicious. We had beer with various dishes & enjoyed a good afternoon watching people go by was a fabulous Americans still need to be familiar with Asian dining, not PFChang. They must be shorthanded since they only have one waitress & assistance. Kitchen staff must be overwhelmed as guests are coming in. This must be a fluke.

Ordered to go. Ordered boiled shrimp, pork, and chive dumplings; custard buns; and beef roll. Beef roll was great. Not amused that the shrimp in the dumplings were raw, which also means that the pork was potentially raw because the dumpling was not entirely cooked through. First time and last time here for the raw shrimp (and potentially raw pork inside the dumpling).
This location is nowhere near as good as other locations. The menu has been white-a-fied to appease the taste buds of its mostly non-asian patrons. The orange chicken is not even close to being the same recipe as the other locations. The stir fried green beans didn’t have the more traditional fermented pickles or garlic thats stir fried with it. The soup dumplings wrap was much thicker and not as melt in your mouth. There wasn’t even any the chili oil on the table with the soy sauce and vinegar! Had to ask the server for some. If you’re not asian, you’ll enjoy it here. But if you’re looking for a proper Chinese/Taiwanese food experience, do yourself a favor and go to the Cerritos location.

Food was bland ; came out hot but food was cold once it hit the table

We ordered the orange chicken, chicken fried noodle and the chicken dumplings. Everything came out at different times. We asked for the dumplings first. They came 15-20 min after the noodles. Then, when we were eating the dumplings, we noticed the chicken was pink and raw! We even asked multiple staff members and they all agreed it was raw. Although, the orange chicken and noodles were tasty. We just worried that we would get food poisoning.

I cant fathom how this place has such high reviews. Its remarkably mediocre; nothing terrible nothing good. Its edible but is the weakest Chinese food Ive head in years. The positive: our server was quite good. The negatives: all of the food was mediocre at best. We ordered the Pork Soup Dumplings, Green Scallion Pancakes, Shrimp Fried Rice, and Szechuan Beef. I would say every one of these dishes was below average. The dumplings tasted fine but arrived lukewarm to the table. They were just OK at best and dont compare to dumplings at any other place Ive had them. The Shrimp Fried Rice lacked flavor it was rice, shrimp, carrots, peas and a little egg, not much. (The cooks should just go to Benihana and watch the chefs there to learn to make the fired rice portion and it would improve significantly). You can tell by the light color its not going to be great. The big disappointment was the beef. The meat was very tough and the pieces were very large. The cuts of beef were too large to eat in one bite which is a problem when eating with shop sticks. In sum, how mediocre is this place? Its the first time I can ever remember that we didnt take leftovers home. Finally the hostess seemed untrained. We walked up and they didnt greet us but instead looked down for about 5 minutes. We figured out that they were calling their reservations to see if they had room for us--thats nice but a "hello, please give me a minute to see if we can accommodate your party of two" would have taken two seconds.
I ordered the Mongolian beef via grub hub and the meat turned blue a day later. Would not recommend.

Wow. I am so disappointed by my most recent experience at this restaurant. I love the food here and the service is usually decent but tonight was different. My friends and I arrived and it wasn’t empty but it wasn’t packed either. We were seated and ordered appetizers while we were thinking about our entrees. It was my friends’ first time there so they were reading over the menu. Our waiter was nice and friendly. While we were still deciding on our entrees, a taller gentleman who I assuming was the shift manager came over and took two of the menus from us. He “asked” if he could take them and leave us with one but he had already taken them from us before we could answer. He said he needed some for the front which I was assuming because there were customers who didn’t have any menus but he simply moved them to the front of the restaurant to the host stand. So rude. We ordered our entrees and we got our food but our waiter never came back to ask how we were doing. Waiters and waitresses kept walking by but wouldn’t look at our table and were clearly out of water. I stopped one of the waitresses and asked if we could have our water refilled as well as the hot green tea that we ordered. She looked miserable and like she didn’t want to be there. She came back and refilled our waters and we said thank you but she just walked away without responding and never refilled the tea we asked for. Our waiter finally came back much later after the shift manager heard me complaining about the service. The shift manager never addressed it either, but my friends saw that he was listening when I was complaining about the service. It’s unfortunate because I love the food here. The food was great tonight but I am embarrassed that I took my friends here because our experience was so bad. Not sure if I’ll ever dine in restaurant again, may just order take out from now on.
Went there Friday 1/16 at 430pm. I don't know what was going on that day. I got the wantons, dumblings, orange chicken and fried rice. Besides the service being pretty bad and the orange chicken and fried rice being super mid and unimpressive. The dumblings and wantons were absolutely terrible, I mean it tasted like there was some kind of cleaner or chemical tasting. I'm a person who as an extremely strong stomach, like I've eaten spoiled food before and didn't have an issue, with this food I threw up about an hour later and got mild food poisoning. So congrats to this place for being the second place ever that served food that was inedible to me, that's impressive in its own right. The insult was them trying to gas light me saying it tasted normal, hell no it did not, I was willing to pay someone else to try it and give me their opinion. They did take off those wantons and dumplings off the receipt which was nice, I still tipped because I'm not a monster. But damn, this place was impressively bad in a very hilarious way. Again good job for being the second place ever to give me food poisoning 👍 that deserves a medal
