This was my first time having Korean/Chinese kebabs and I'll definitely coming back soon. They had a wide array of options including both beef and lamb skewers. I tried a little bit of everything at their restaurant and couldn't find anything that I didn't enjoy. If you're looking for something a little different next time you eat out, definitely give this place a try!
Love the skewers, Lamb, beef and sausage are my favorite. If you like spicy, Definetely try the mala beef or mala Lamb skewers. They recently updated their grills with automated ones. Which is a great convenience.. Perfectly cooked skewers every time.. One criticism, they used to have steamed egg and a complimentary salad, but they recently removed both from their menu.. Hopefully they will get them back one day.
The food here is great, the charcoal grills really give the meat a great flavor and the xinjiang style bbq seasoning is great. I really enjoy going with friends, I find I can usually eat about 5 skewers (one small order) if we're also ordering side-dishes. We order about 1 meat order each and try a few different varieties. I really enjoyed the Ong-choi and scallion pancakes as well. It's not cheap, but costs about what KBBQ would and is a great alternative when you're looking for a different type of social dinner.
Eggs and chives , mixed mushrooms , chinese broccoli and garlic , all were Soo good !!! fit perfectly with my low carb diet! shared it with companions who ordered lamb and marinated beef bbq k-bobs. prior to our orders arriving , we were served 2 pots of steamed egg, kimchee, pickled seaweed, boiled and spiced pnuts, salad. ALL sooo good!! portions of food we ordered were large portions and perfect to share amongst us 4. plates average price 13.00. small order side dishes avg. 3.99. out door dining available and very pleasant . service very good .
Feng Mao is one of my wife's favorite restaurants. It's a unique style of Chinese cuisine that is a fusion of Chinese and Korean culture. Their lamb skewers are amazing and their sweet and sour pork is one of my favorite dishes. Covid sucks and they are cooking the skewers for you, but normally, there is a charcoal grill at your table that cooks the meat to crispy, juicy perfection.
The best bbq restaurant in the US
They have the absolutely perfect combo of Chinese&korean bbq!! charcoal grills of perfectly-portioned skewers, a variety of options including both traditional chinese&kbbq dishes, and your regular Korean side dishes. Love it! Will def come back with friends!!!
This place is unbelievable! Food is amazing and the variety makes it very fun. You can keep coming back and it won’t be the same. Just a super cool place and the system and food is just amazing!!
I am just so sad I don live in L.A. Lucky you whoever can come here as much as possible. Best place for BBQ skewers and side dishes. My favorite was Chinese salad. LOVE THIS PLACE ❤️
Delicious Chinese & Korean cuisine!! Love it! Every weekend I’d love to go there and have some nice dishes!! Also the BBQ is amazing tooo!!!
My friend took me here for the first time and it's absolutely amazing! The lamb is delicious especially with the seasoning dip they give you. It does get really smokey indoors and if you can't handle it they have outdoor seating as well. After you gorge on all the meats don't forget to wash it all down with the cold noodle soup it's amazing! And always remember thank you for the food!
I’ve eaten here a few times, both dine in and delivery. The kebabs are always amazing. The spice mix is truly incredible. If you dine in, you make an order on a mobile site (via a QR code on the table) that lets your whole party add to the order and see what everyone else has ordered — it’s very convenient for a full table where you plan to eat family style!
Went here for my bday..I know I know.. of all the awesome places to eat in ktown...right?! But this place is top notch... from the food to the service is always spot on. It's expensive everywhere these days, so I want good consistent food and service.. and this place always delivers. Get the lamb.. can't go wrong with that.. and a side of soju and you're good to go. Highly recommend this place of you want a chill atmosphere with good food and service
Went there with my husband to meet up friends and it was absolutely delicious. Great ventilation for the skewers (I stuffed myself with so many), the kimchi salad was great and the buns were fluffy. Service was so kind and careful with us. Definitely come !!!
I have been to this place only once and I had great experience here. In contrary to other kebab places, you need to grill the kebab yourself which is super cool and every one can grill to his or her own taste. The food is fairly priced given its quantity and the free appetizers were so good, especially the kimchi. The service was also great and we got our dishes quite fast which is great.
pretty authentic northeastern style Chinese BBQ and other food. service is pretty friendly and their staff would come over to help inform you on how to best cook the skewers if you can't do it properly. the fish soup tastes great too and is perfect for a cold night.
Every single thing I’ve tried has been astounding. The quality of the meats is second to none. Highly recommend the Mara spiced beef and lamb.
We, family of 4, when there last weekend. The food was really good and we ended up eating way too much. 😀 The lamb skewers were awesome , and the lamb soup (酸菜羊肉砂锅) was delicious.
I've come here several times with my husband and have never been disappointed. It's our go-to for satisfying BBQ. The beef and lamb skewers, sweet and sour pork, and chives are some of our favorite. Highly recommend!
This is the spot! My go to place for lamb been coming here for months now. Service is always exceptional and food is delicious. Enjoy a nice glass of beer with soju on the side. Oh and try their red pepper clams in brown sauce those are fire..literally! 🔥👌 Update: Today we got two glass mugs as a gift. Amazing!!!
I'm usually not the biggest fan of lamb, but this place makes it very well. I would just be cautious when you're cooking your own food don't burn yourself. Pro tip: if you like spicy there is another type of hotter chilli powder available upon request.Make reservations if you can because it gets pretty packed at night. There are also two locations so if you're meeting up with a larger party or another party make sure you designate which street it's on. Parking in this location is valet only $2.50.
I learned a new party trick @fengmao.la and it involves meat skewers! All Wolverine jokes aside, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that their ✨Numbing Spicy Mala Dry Hot Pot was the clear winning dish of the meal for me✨ but their Mala lamb kebab did come in hot in 2nd place🔥 We had: Kebabs- lamb, mala lamb, marinated beef, pork belly & asparagus, chicken heart, chicken gizzard, fish tofu, matsutake mushroom, green chives, lotus root, potato pancake, cold noodle, numbing spicy mala dry hotpot
Very authentic northeastern Chinese food. All the dishes are amazing. We come here every time we visit LA
I was hesitant to try out this place after reading the reviews. Thanks to hubby's encouragement, I made up my mind and now I want to go back! 1. The lamb skewers are absolutely tasty. Juicy or not depends on your grilling technique. There is fat in the middle of the meat just perfectly enough to make the skewer tastier. 2. Smoke everywhere. Of course, it's charcoal bbq! 3. Bull penis is OK to try but not my favorite. 4. The lamb soup is surprisingly good! Yes it needs a lot more saltiness but I guess it's Korean way of broth. Very flavorful but you gotta add salt yourself. 5. Love the side dishes. I asked for refills and they brought out more generously. 6. Parking at Hami bank across the street. 7. Cheaper than Shin-sen-gumi yakitori for sure! 8. Not to mention the addictive dipping herb. Taste very much like Mongolian flavor.
I found this place amazing. I have never tried anything similar before. Choose the food, it comes in little sticks, put it in the grill in the middle of the table and dip it in sauce. The bull penis was awful, try it, it is interesting. The price is medium-high $$. $25-30 per person
If you are looking for authentic Chinese skewers, this place wouldn't disappoint! We have come here a few times in the past and always loved it 👌🏼. The place is kind of small but cozy. Bathroom is clean and the customer service has never let me down. Pricing is also reasonable. Anyhow, it's been about 2 years since our last visit, and we noticed something has changed for the better! Before, you would have to manually turn your skewers to prevent those amazing kebabs from being burnt! Now their BBQ grill will turn those skewers for you automatically, giving you better experiences! The place can get smoky if the place is packed, but that's BBQ restaurants in general! So, no complaints there. We tasted almost all the skewers available in this restaurant and these are the ones we can recommend (everyone's taste buds are different but here are the ones we think would worth trying if you are spoilt for choice): - Lamb kebabs (10/10) - Seasoned mala lamb (10/10) - Beef kebabs (9/10) - Seasoned mala beef (10/10) - Pork belly and enoki mushroom 🍄 (9/10) - Sausage (8/10) - Fish balls (9/10) Overall, I would totally recommend Feng Mao BBQ if you were even remotely interested in kebabs! You shouldn't pass up the chance to try this restaurant because your stomach would walk out happy 😋👍🏼!
The best chinese street style kebabs! The cumin spice seasoning is sooo addicting and bomb! They use real charcoal grill and it's super fun cooking your own skewers. Price is the same as ayce bbq but it taste sooo much better too! Get the lamb and beef kebabs. Soo gooood! My all time favorite bbq place hands down!🍖🍖🍖🍖🍖
Very authentic bbq place. The BBQ here is absolutely delicious and the service is excellent. Everything was cooked perfectly and the staff were very friendly and attentive. My child loved the food as well, which made the experience even better for our family. We had a great time and will definitely come back again when we have the chance.
I love Chinese style (cumin) lamb skewers. These are the best I've ever had, and that includes Vancouver (second best) and the SF Bay Area. The rest of the food was very good as well. You cook the food yourself which I prefer. Service was attentive and helpful. The mantou with sweetened condensed milk makes a nice ending to the meal.
Lots of places these days for Chinese skewers, Feng Mao is among the best. Inside is not large, street parking is the thing, and their skewers are generously cut compared to most of their competitors. Service is pretty good, as are some of the cooked dishes, especially the eggplant.
Superb. The fusion of Korean and Chinese cuisines really works here. Get the mala lamb skewers, the richness of the lamb sets off the mala. Chicken hearts were notably excellent, pork belly- enoki great. Don’t be afraid of the bull penis, if you like tendon you will like this. The lotus dish was excellent and the banchan gave you a vinegar reset of your tastebuds. Get some rice to contrast with the meat. V friendly staff , huge menu to explore. Just a great place.
Wow wow this place slaps. Mala style Korean -Chinese skewers. Their stir fry beef and lamb with cilantro is equally delicious if you don’t want to wait for the 5 minute of self rotating skewer goodness. The green scallion pancakes are the best I’ve had- flakey and crispy. Cold noodles are a refreshing cool down to the spice. Still have to explore the whole menu but shocked that this place doesn’t get More love. ALSO FREE parking at the Han mi bank next to it! Service is great!
It was my first time at this place, on a friend’s recommendation. The cumin spiced meat was so great! Usually not a fan of lamb, but the lamb skewers from this place was pretty good, and it also didn’t stink too badly. The beef kebab was amazing too, the beef was tender and well marinated! The chicken kebab felt a bit dry and not as flavourful compared to the other so I would not recommend. It’s a good place to socialize as you needed to wait for the skewers to be grilled. Went on a Saturday, around 730pm, and waited around 30-45 mins for the table to be ready, but this was WELL worth the wait!
The lamb skewer is so good. I usually dislike lamb meat because of the smell but the lamb meats particular smell was nonexistent in the skewers. I actually preferred it over the beef skewers - which is also very savory and tasteful. I would also recommend ordering some bowl of rice to balance out the strong taste of the skewers and to also get that extra carb. Definitely would come back with my friends and coworkers to grab drinks and skewers!
My first time having these cumin spiced lamb skewers on a rolling grill and I LOVED it. We ordered 25 for 3 of us, which seemed like a lot but we killed it - 15 lamb, 5 chicken, 5 chicken heart(?). Wouldn’t recommend the chicken was a bit dry. The spicy lamb is actually very spicy, but also addicting so couldn’t stop. Appreciated the refillable banchan. We had to wait about 15 min. It’s a small restaurant with limited tables and the grill doesn’t cook them very fast.
All the good here is terrific. The meats are super tender and well seasoned. All the a La carte dishes are amazing too. Get the green bean dish and the eggplants. Great place to have a big party with their outdoor setup, not sure if they still have it going. Lots of parking on street or the bank across.
Food was okay but a lot of stuff was overpriced, like $4.50 for green chives kebab. Mala lamb was good but a bit light on salt
This is an interesting place for everyone to come and enjoy. This is a Chinese style meat on a skewer that you get to grill on the fire. For first timers this might be fun and interesting, and it might be a great place to grab some beers with your friends or a date. My date found the place fun and interesting. They have some interesting things on the menu such as bull penis, lamb, beef, etc. But for those who are less adventurous and prefer the safe tasty route, I suggest lamb and marinated beef game is strong. The servers here can speak Korean, Chinese, and English so do not be afraid to speak in any language! I'll be back.
Super solid spot specializing in grill it yourself lamb kabobs. Novices would be better suited allowing staff to do the cooking as the kebabs are layered with chunks of fat which can drip onto the coals causing flare ups. Be sure to wash all the delicious meat down with a Tsing Tao!
So much meat... A diy Chinese BBQ joint Lots of variety and excellent price point. Plates came fast and you cook it yourself. Wish they had more choices other than meat. Veggies were in short supply.
The food is generally good. However, note that some meat tastes plain even with the spicy powder, potentially because they didn’t marinate most of their meat. A bit overpriced as well and had to manually grill some meat
I hadn’t been to Feng Mao in over 10 years, so it felt nostalgic to come back. Back then, there was always a long line, and from what I could see, that hasn’t changed much. This time, a friend picked the restaurant. While they don’t have their own parking lot, you can park across the street at Hanmi Bank on 5th, so parking wasn’t an issue for me. We ordered a variety of skewers — lamb (their specialty), beef, and octopus. The first thing that caught my eye was the auto-turning skewer rack. Such a cool upgrade! It rotates the skewers for you, so the grilling is even and effortless. I don’t remember them having that back in the day. The skewers all came out perfectly cooked if you pull them off at the right time, and the flavor was solid. We also tried the marinated cucumbers, grilled chives, and sweet and sour pork. The cucumbers were light and refreshing. The chives, grilled with sauce, had great flavor, though a bit on the salty side (easy fix: just dip less into the sauce). The sweet and sour pork was different from the typical Chinese style — heavier on the batter and with a lighter sauce that leaned sweet without much sour. The pork itself was crunchy, so it was still enjoyable, just a different take on the dish. Overall, the meal was satisfying. The service was fine — not overly attentive, but things ran smoothly, especially if you can speak Korean or Chinese. I’d recommend Feng Mao if you enjoy skewers, especially lamb. Just keep in mind that dinner time, especially on weekends, can come with a wait.
Nestled away in Koreatown is a hidden gem of a skewer restaurant, specializing in Northern-style BBQ skewers. They also offer a fantastic selection of cold side dishes and refreshing cold noodles. The flavors are amazing, and the prices are incredibly reasonable. Highly recommended for all skewer lovers! ⭐️👍😎
Good, solid spot for Chinese bbq skewers. You cook/serve yourself, except for certain dishes like the cumin lamb. Pretty solid spot if you’re in the mood for this kinda food. Nothing I’d highly recommend to people but good for what it is. You don’t get a lot of Chinese bbq skewers spots, so it’s a unique experience
A great place to get Chinese spiced skewers: lamb, beef, mushrooms, chives, etc. The red spice mix is a mixture of lightly spicy red pepper powder, cumin, sesame, etc. The skewers you get are raw and it's fun to turn them over the gas powered but charcoal cube accentuated grill. Best to just turn up the heat to max and make each side a golden brown. Lamb soup with sour cabbage is a cold day cure. The service is fast, especially with the table button. The ambiance is refreshing and much quieter than popular Korean BBQ spots. The take out here is not as good, they seem to just bake the skewers in a tin foil pouch and there's a lot of oil that can spill out. PS Matt Groening, creator of The Simpsons, seems to like this place but we prefer Feng Mao BBQ Lamb Kebab Olympic
This is an all you can pay for establishment, which means you will pay a lot more but at least you won't stuff your face in attempts to make it all worth it. The beef and pork are the stars at this establishment so if you are looking for chicken or fish then you might be SOL. They do have shrimp you can grill but it's doesn't go as well with the tasty premixed seasoning they provide, it's definitely meant for the red meats. Oh and if you want the dumplings please be aware they are pork. Didn't say it on the menu but when asked after my order came out, the waitress confirmed it was indeed pork. Service is cool but they give you wet cups for your beverages. Something about that doesn't sit well with me and makes me feel that the cups are used/dirty. The parking in the shopping center is valet only.
Wasn't really impressed with this place but food wasn't terrible. My impression is that this is a combination of tabletop korean bbq with chinese bbq skewers. It's a fairly unique experience as they bring out charcoal cubes as fuel for the grill. The grill has two levels to allow more direct cooking vs keeping things warm. It's a bit of time management as the charcoal will burn down and the cuts they put on skewers are of various types of meat and thickness. Honestly I'm not a fan of having to manage the cooking this closely while still trying to enjoy eating. It works fine for other types of food but not so well for this style. Overall the meat is tasty, wasn't impressed that much with the sides, but plus for a different experience.
I came to this restaurant a few weeks ago for a friend's birthday dinner. I'm not a fan of lamb in general, but I found the concept of a DIY kebab restaurant pretty neat. This restaurant not only specializes in kebabs, but they have a few popular Korean dishes that other patrons were ordering. Ambiance: For me, I thought the layout of the restaurant was a bit strange. It's in a horseshoe formation, with the kitchen on the far left and a room to the left, and 2 rows of booths that primarily occupy the space with a wooden banister in the middle of the two sections (if my description makes sense). The tables on one side aren't really divided and because the atmosphere is quite loud and boisterous, you can really hear the people talking to your left and right. We actually occupied three tables, so I'm sure the other customers could hear us. :X There are vents on top of the cooking stations; the lighting isn't too bad. More suited for big parties, I would say. Food: It was okay. You pretty much order by the skewer, although there are sets that are supposed to be cheaper. We ended up ordering way too much food for three people, and over-ordered on the lamb and the gizzards. Although they specialize in lamb, since I'm not a fan of it at all, I didn't care for those kebabs. I liked the chicken wings and the beef a lot more. They were properly seasoned and tasty. Unfortunately, I wasn't too skilled in cooking the kebabs and despite the waitress trying to help me, I ended up burning a lot of the kebabs. Overall, I would say that it's an interesting concept if you like eating kebabs. For me, I thought it was too expensive but that could be because we ordered the wrong kebabs. We ended up paying over $20 per person. The waitresses and waiters are really nice, but I don't think this is the restaurant for me.
Not bad for the price but I don’t think it’s worth coming more than once. There is a wide selection of food, but nothing was too special. Spicy noodles were nice.
Fengmao used to be my favorite restaurant in LA Korea town, but today’s visit left me disappointed. While the grill machine improvements were noticeable, removing the coals from the grill reduced the flavor significantly. Improvements should enhance the food, not detract from it. The hot dishes portion sizes have noticeably shrunk. For example, the fried kidney now only includes 8 pieces for $17. While price adjustments are understandable, reducing portions simultaneously is not. On the positive side, the remaining dishes still maintain their quality, and the service remains excellent. I hope Fengmao can reconsider these changes and bring back the aspects that made it a favorite for many.
I was looking for a ramen soup restaurant and happened on to this place. The service was nice and judging by the aromas I thought I'd be happy with there lamb soup to go. What I got was a bland inedible mess. Rice was suggested and got that instead of noodles, but it had a rancid taste and smell. Won't be going back☹️
First of all, it's not even a korean restaurant.... The food quality is extremely underwhelming, perhaps the lamb skewer is the better choice. We also got fried chicken wings and it was borderline terrible as the batter is soooo greasy and thick. The worst part was the service, my group came in on a slow day. Took them quite a long time to get the food out (our first batch was fairly small). Staff never checked on us after the first batch, and we always had to go up to them to get their attention. Absolutely would not recommend.
Cleanliness: 2/5 Food: 5 Service: 2/5 Order: 1/5 Total time spent: 1.5 hours Food took over thirty minutes to arrive after we ordered The good: I love lamb skewers, they are amazing and delicious and feng mao really nailed the flavor! Reminded me of China and Korea, just authentic and good. The not so good: Waited twenty minutes to sit down, when I saw multiple dirty but open tables. The bathroom is right next to their plating area. The kitchen has a door that they closed off but it’s so close to the women’s bathroom. I almost got hit in the face when I left the bathroom and a server didn’t even look and swung open the kitchen door. The service was interesting. People don’t talk to you and it seems like you just have to know what you’re doing. They’re so busy that they don’t have time to guide you. Also, If you’re in a big group, they will pay more attention to you. We sat down first but the bigger group got their food first. We ordered multiple things but didn’t get all of it. They had to check in with us and we cancelled half our order because we didn’t want to wait another hour to get our food. They ran out of rice (???) they also tried to give us food we didn’t order and when we tried to explain we didn’t order it, we got strange looks. If it was service, they should have said so. Would I come back? Maybe in a large group. If you don’t have time to watch other people get their food first, don’t come here.
So. Im wording this nice when i say this but felt unwanted here. I can't give a food review because i never got seated. Was next up on a wait list standing outside the door for about 25 minutes. When i party of 3 came up. They signed the wait list. Im pretty sure that party asked for an unprepared table . Cool ,but wouldn't you ask the people in front of them first? We were never offered. I waited another 20 minutes and walked. ( for honest review...racist feel in the air)
I will always remember Feng Mao as the first place I ever tried bull penis. For those of you who see this on a menu and think it's a good idea, think again. The texture was so disgusting and it took forever to chew that I almost gagged. Please do yourself a favor and skip it. I don't blame them for the nasty penis, but the rest of the items are just alright to me. The way you cook it on open flame is interesting but the meat skewers were tiny and expensive. I also didn't care for the seasoning they use on the meat. I wish we had ordered some of the regular non-BBQ dishes to supplement the meal so that we didn't have to end up paying so much for meat skewers. The service was horrible. We had a large party and they brought us tiny plates of banchan or side dishes. When we asked for some more of the kimchi and beansprouts, we were told that they will only refill side dishes once per table. I have never experienced this in any Korean establishments in my entire life. We paid $37 per person for meat and they were stingy over cabbage and bean sprouts? That royally pissed me off. Needless to say, I won't be coming back. I came to experience the cool looking grill and have no more reason to revisit this place. There are so many other better options in ktown with better food and better service.
Unpleasant dining experience. Pay attention that they have a ghost waiting list that does not tell you even if you sign your name when you arrive at the restaurant. When we arrived at Feng Mao at 7:00 pm, we were put on a waiting list for seats. We waited for 30 minutes for 2 groups of people in front of us. As soon as it was our turn, some groups of people who the owner claimed had called her in advance took our first spot and were assigned a seat, resulting in us waiting for another 20 minutes. It seems that the owner knows these people very well so give them a green light to cut the line. I wonder how people behind us will feel about this, they too waited a long time. Overall, the food is great but not worth it if the owner cannot treat every customer equally.
I knew I would need to do my own grill, but some reviews years ago convinced me that they would at least give some instructions and help if we were trying for the first time. But nooooo, no help at all. Terrible service. If you are not able to grill yourself for the first time, never try this place! Go find another one that serves nicely cooked food. Not only our own grilled food was either raw or burnt due to our terrible skills, the chives that they cooked also tasted bitter. The smoke was terrible. Grilling ourselves and even eating the food easily burned the skin. My face felt hot even after I left this place for an hour.
Terrible service: I stopped here on a lunch break, not realizing it was a sit and grill type of spot. I ordered to go the 5 lamb skewers, which came out to $21 after tip. I tried asking if it came with any sides, as I saw sides are brought out to tables with the meat. We had a bit of a language barrier, so I tried pointing to what I meant, to which she looked annoyed that I was in there as a non-regular that spoke only English. When she handed me over my food, I saw it was just one small little box, which I tried to be optimistic about until I felt how light it was. The skewers were cut up to fit the box, but only looked to be about 6 oz of meat. The entire portion could fit in the palm of one very dainty hand. A poor portion, with no sides that are included normally included, no rice, and no attempt at communication or quality of service, all for $21.
We went there on December 31st. We usually like this place because the food and service are good, but this time we had an unpleasant experience. There was a large table in the middle with about eight people who were extremely loud. Every time we tried to talk, we couldn’t hear each other because of the noise. It completely affected the atmosphere. What made it even more uncomfortable was that people from that table were constantly walking around and taking drinks directly from the fridge without asking a waiter. My parents were seated right next to the fridge, so people were walking back and forth beside them the entire time. I don’t know if they were the owners or staff, but this kind of behavior lowered the quality and professionalism of the restaurant. This was supposed to be a New Year’s Eve lunch with my parents, and unfortunately, my parents didn’t enjoy it because of the noise and chaos. It was disappointing, especially since we normally enjoy dining here.
