What a great spot! Ice cream off the charts (Had an Oreo/Coffee flavor) and their Chicken Caesar Wrap was very tasty too. Get the Seasoned Fries. You're welcome in advance. Service excellent. Every one very friendly and personable!
The Quintessential Burger 🍔 and Fry Spot of the Hamptons. It's more of a West Coast Vibe and Atmosphere, which is beyond refreshing in the overly Bougied Out Hamptons! Less than 15 bucks for a meal? Who knew! Kulu
Always packed with ice cream lovers. Some of the best ice cream ice had. Deeeelicious!
We walked in for ice cream. The service was quick and efficient. The ice cream was BOMB. PUMPKIN OREO - I highly recommend! Soooooooo good. The eat in section was busy and messy looking so we went for a walk with our ice cream.
One of the BEST old fashioned hand made burgers I've ever had! Very friendly and efficient service. The owner brought the food out to us and even fixed my wife an ice cream afterward! Great place! You deserve a break today! Get up and get away from McDonalds!
Top 10 burger I've ever had. The ice cream was also fantastic. Great post beach fuel up.
Staff is always friendly and sharp. Big John burger is top notch. Their Ice cream is also great. Quintessential part of Montauk that has never changed and I hope never does. Been going since I was a kid in the early 90s and still go back whenever I can.
Handled a 9 person order with ease, food was amazing and we went back later for the homemade ice-cream and were again wowed.
Quite a pleasant experience here. I ordered a Big John Burger with cheese and all the fixings, along with some fries. The burger was perfectly cooked, was quite juicy and tasty. The sauce on the burger also was quite good. The fries were also delicious. I went off season, so there was practically no wait time, and the lady at the counter was also delightful. It is not terribly expensive either. I will certainly be going back next time I am in Montauk. For what it is, five stars.
Came here for a late night bite didn’t think much of it until I got inside. The service was so friendly. Then came the shake. I drink milkshakes a lot, like 2 a week. This is hands down the best I’ve ever had. Reminds me of shakes as a kid in the best way. Also incredible pricing. 10/10
Such an awesome place. The homemade ice cream is outrageous! Havent been here in years and glad to see the quality hasn't changed. I also need to add that they have the social distancing guidelines down perfectly. Only 2 groups in at a time, as they have 2 registers, and they kindly asked people to keep their distance. I was happy to see it considering there were plenty of other places we visited that weren't enforcing social distancing.
I came here around a year ago, but felt I needed to leave a retroactive review since I think this was one of the best places in Montauk. If you've got a craving for late night grease or ice cream, this is the perfect spot. My girlfriend and I tried a 'fancy' spot nearby for dinner that didn't really at all scratch the itch, and this did. Honestly, I found it better than In-N-Out and about on par with a shake shack burger. The burger was well flavored, moist, and pretty much right out juicy. The sauce included was a perfect pairing and a good approximation of something like shack sauce mixed with in-n-out sauce. Serving size was very solid for the price, and came with lettuce and tomato. This is honestly what I imagined an In-N-Out burger was supposed to be given all the hype surrounding it. It's like all my deflated hopes and dreams in California re-manifested to create this burger out on the East Coast. I'm being a bit dramatic, but it's good food. It's not fine dining, you're not going to be absolutely blown away with how beautiful or clean the joint is, but it doesn't really try to be anything other than a nostalgic drive-in spot. Just mind the line at night.
Love the retro feel of this place, almost like getting transported back in time. Didn’t get any food just ice cream. The rum raisin ice cream was filled with raisins and very creamy. Strawberry shake wasn’t overly sweet which I liked, you can definitely taste that it’s homemade. My brother got the brownie sundae. It was brownie then fudge then 3 scoops of ice cream. The banana oreo was his favorite. Hope you all try this place, so worth it.
John is the most caring worker I’ve ever met here in MONTAULK. His passion and love for this place and the food here is felt with every step. An amazing spot with amazing prices and an amazing staff. Definitely recommend this place!! 10/10!!!
Classic old school burger joint ! Vintage decor is super cute. They have one vegetarian/vegan option: the house black bean burger. It’s VERY tasty 😋 My parents loved the thick shake :) Also! My mom forgot her wallet there and they were kind enough to keep it safe until we were able to come back for it. So thank you SO much for that. Amazing service :)
First, I have two words for you: Double Cheeseburger. There are basically four kinds of burgers in the world, and they all have their place in my heart. There's the restaurant burger (big and high-quality, though sometimes too fussy, and trying too hard to be 'special'); the diner / coffee shop burger (heaven for a serious meal with all the fixins); the fast-food burger (when that's what you want, it's all that will do). Then there's the fourth kind, the burger one can only find at local spots in smaller cities and towns across the United States, and that's the variant offered at John's: the classic drive-in burger. The sear on the two high-quality patties, the size, the toppings, the bun, the cheese (melted directly on both burgers!), the proportions, and the general vibe of the place in which it's served all add up to a sublimely satisfying only-in-America experience. Not too big, not too small, and not aiming for anything other than a good, solid flavor, this unassuming burger hits the mark for me every time. Every time. But as their name makes clear, at John's, the ice cream is the real star. It's truly delicious, and in addition to traditional favorites (like an AMAZING Black Cherry), John's also offers an ever-changing variety of interesting, homemade flavors. On my last few visits, I found the Toasted Coconut, Banana-Oreo, and Peanut Butter Blast flavors (amomg others) to all be excellent, and a cup of their FlufferNutter ice cream absolutely knocked my socks off. HOW HAVE I LIVED FOR 60 YEARS WITHOUT THIS FLAVOR?? Seriously good, it tastes like a perfect version of its namesake - minus the white bread. Open late and year-round, John's is a great choice for a family sit-down, a snack stop, or a quick grab-and-go. It's also the perfect place for a post-game respite after a round of miniature golf at Puff 'n' Putt, which is a few yards down the road. There's also outdoor seating, further adding to the delightful throwback atmosphere. In an era when places often strive for a 'retro' feel, John's is the real deal; it's old-school, but not outdated. It feels like walking back a few decades in time, and in the best possible way. I've been going to John's Ice Cream for over three decades now, and I hope to visit for a few decades more!
Excellent fast food. Awesome burgers, fried fish, jalapeno poppers, fries etc.. and actually the best ice cream in Montauk. Also prob the best fried chicken in Montauk , way better than that chicken place.. There are lines for a reason. But it goes fast.. It's a Montauk must.. Cash only.
Burgers and waffle fries were delicious and prices were reasonable. Perfect spot for casual lunch. The ice cream looked amazing, I wish I saved room for dessert! Cash only but there is an ATM inside.
We ended up trying John's for lunch one day after a struggle the night before to find a place to eat dinner. It is definitely not as fancy as a lot of the other places in the area, thankfully. It has an old time drive-in type fell to it. We just wanted to be able to have a nice meal, which is what we got. The food was inexpensive, good, and they were even able to easily accommodate my dairy allergy. If you are in Montauk and want a break from the high priced local eateries, go to John's.
Excellent burgers here and great service. Feels like a bit of stepping into a Time Machine the place has a cool vintage vibe. Made a quick stop here before a long drive back to nyc. Great atmosphere to grab a classic tasty american style burger
Nadine took my order and she was kind, sweet, patient, and answered all my questions. I spoke to Dwayne and he was friendly, caring and very nice, and he personally brought me my order. Both of them were fantastic. I enjoyed shrimp and chips, and I had my husband try the flounder and chips. Our son had the chicken tenders which he loved. The food was made quickly and it was delicious and hot. This location was so adorable. They have alot of choices of foods and desserts. We will be back soon. Thanks again
4.5 IMO, the icecream is good, lovely little spot. However ordering is a chaotic.
Love their cheese burgers. Never had a cheese burger ever. Will go as much as I can
Excellent place for real Americana food burgers were good theno onion rings and mozzarella aticks a must try and definitely the chicken sandwich seevice was great cash only but they do have an atm on site will come back when im out here in the island
Kids loved the homemade ice cream!! Black bean burger was very delicious, too. Only downside is that it's cash only.
Came here for ice cream during a girls trip to Montauk. There was a bit of a rush but the workers handled it very well, we were in and out despite the line going out the door. The ice cream was very good and well priced! Definitely a must try in Montauk! Though be aware that it is cash only!
The best meal I’ve had while in Montauk! The burger was absolutely delicious (could have something to do with the special sauce 🤔) and the ice cream was the definition of perfection. Everything was both simple yet indulgent. Very glad we got to try the pumpkin flavored ice cream, which was a Halloween special. Highly highly recommend everyone to visit!
I’m reviewing strictly off of dessert as I’ve never had a meal here, but this spot has been a staple for Montauk for decades. There’s usually a wait but it moves quick, and there’s typically some sort of seating outside. Amazing place for a scoop or two of ice cream!! Try the banana Oreo, it’s amazing!
I always visit John’s when I’m in town. The staff are friendly and make you feel welcomed, while working extremely hard to keep the lines moving. Try the seasoned waffles fries. Their ice cream is solid too. Best of all, John’s is one of the few restaurants in Montauk that is not insanely overpriced. Bring cash or use the onsite atm.
Banana Oreo and toasted coconut ice cream were absolutely delicious! They also had warm toasted cashews which were amazing. Prices were very fair considering the quality and the friendly services. We will definitely come back!
Me and my coworkers came in eyeing this place for weeks on our way to a job site not far away. Had high hopes. The cashier called my Puerto Rican coworker “amigo” right off the bat and it threw us off as awkward, especially since she clearly wasn’t Hispanic or Latino….she took our whole order and THEN informed us it was cash only. So we had to leave. She never mentioned the online ordering option or that there’s an atm inside. We came back today (a week later) with cash, and the we had the same cashier who sort lacked energy or happiness? Didn’t seem happy to be there, no energy, wasn’t rude but wasn’t polite. But we ordered food and were not disappointed at all. The burgers were relatively cheap, absolutely delicious and filling, and we saw John the owner there and he was so polite, and happy, and treated everyone (customer or staff) with respect. We may have just had a so-so cashier which would explain a lot, because this place has great food, short wait time, and honestly, that’s why I’d gladly go back. But the biggest and only REAL flaw: cash only, or order online. But, not the end of the world.
Friendly and warm welcome service and great burgers and ice cream. Never had such good French fries. Our family is coming back soon. Thank you!
Stopped by John’s Drive-In in Montauk for a quick bite. Fast service, easy ordering, and perfect when you want something quick and satisfying. Classic drive-in vibe and a convenient stop.
Delicious burgers, delicious french fries, friendly service and quite an unique atmosphere. Nothing fancy at all, just authentic and simple. And not to forget, very affordable prices. You cannot ask more to be happy
I stopped by for ice cream two days in a row, and it was worth it! A fun little spot in Montauk with friendly staff who recommended the Oreo Mint, which was spot on. They offer several creative homemade flavors, and each one is tempting. Easily my go-to place for ice cream in Montauk.
Amazing ice cream flavors, i got the strawberry oreo it was soo good! I also had their burger and it was delicious. Would definitely recommend and come back. It’s probably one of the most affordable foods in the area and it’s still great quality. The place had a retro vibe it was so nice. They have indoor and outdoor seating.
No frills burger spot in Montauk - quite possibly the most budget friendly eatery as well. Everything was pretty good. The burger was tasty and pretty decently sized. Fries were tasty but a little over done, The Fish and Chips were good, and the Buffalo Chicken Wrap was flavorful. Jalapeño Poppers were cheddar cheese - so know before you order. The Mozzarella Sticks were not bad either. Solid meal. Only quam was the bathroom - only one and the lock apparently isn't the greatest. Anyway, I'd visit again. If you're not a fan of kids or dislike loud... this is not your place, or at least not your place to eat in. It's loud, really loud. That being said, it is recommended.
This is a fabulous experience in Montauk. The interior is a classic old American diner. It gives the feel of stepping into a time capsule. They offer homemade ice-creams, shakes, and finger foods. All delicious. Every item is about $10 - fairly priced for the portion size and the quality. We ordered Rocky Rd shake and coffee Swiss almond ice cream with a waffle cone. Perfect for family and kids.
Went there after seeing the lights at the Montauk lighthouse and stopped for a bite. My wife, daughter and I shared fish and chips, wings and a burger. Everything was cooked perfectly and was delicious and affordable. Staff was super friendly and the wait was a bit long, but the food was fresh and clearly cooked to order so we were fine with it. We got chocolate and peppermint mocha ice cream to share on the drive and that was also excellent. We will absolutely be back!
Food and ice cream were good, staff not very happy to be at work.
Cute cheap little place that’s easy to walk to in town. Beware it’s cash only! The burgers, fries and ice cream were nothing to write home about, but spending less than $40 on lunch for two in Montauk is a win!
Don't bother with the ice cream. It's pretty bad. But the burgers and dogs are great for a good, cheap lunch.
Good ice cream, but note it will be a long wait because it's so popular. The ice cream we have had there was always great but during our last trip the hard ice cream was melting way too quickly once they gave it to us so I think they have it at a temperature that is too high. I'd stick with the soft serve which was as good as always.
John’s Drive-In is a Montauk staple that perfectly captures the laid-back, beach-town vibe. Whether you’re coming off the beach or cruising through town, this spot hits the mark for classic American comfort food and homemade ice cream.
Fast food joint. We only had ice cream which was very good. Apparently, we got there just in time as the line was several people deep by the time we left.
The food was very good burgers were shake shack level mozzarella sticks were definitely in my top 3 mozzarella sticks of all time. The food was also pretty expensive but everything in montauk is expensive so yeah. Service was a little disappointing it seems like they were in a bad mood all day also they only had cash and I had to walk to chase for cash but over it wasn't okay . And finally the atmosphere it felt like a classic 1980s diner and it was very colorful. Overall it was a nice visit, it had nice food, but okay service but I will be coming back.
The employees working here were super nice, especially the young lady who was taking orders. This place is very charming and retro. The food was fine, not spectacular. I've had much better dive food, and actually found my turkey burger pretty bland. The waffle fries were very good though. Seems like the ice cream is the popular item here. Next time, I'm in the area I will stop in just to try a dip of it.
Classic American burger place Very good burger.(That's what we had) Many people get ice cream. We will try next time
Classic old-school drive-in that everyone visiting Montauk should experience. Burgers are classic, ice cream is and tastes homemade, and everyone who works there couldn’t be cooler. Waffle fries are the best I’ve had anywhere.
Came for homemade ice cream as it's described. The place was crowded, of course due to summer. But the staff moves pretty quickly. There are benches outside you can sit at. It's a little dated inside. Theres so many moving parts going on behind the counter. Lol. Maybe next time, I'll try a burger while there.
I have to get the ice cream next time vs the rasberry pineapple twist self serve. Bae had oreo icecream with strawberry syrup and whip cream. Its good but not living up to the hype. Large size cone is not really large more of a medium. Also pricey for the overall quality and experience. I bet it is the location that brings the most business.
Great spot. We got the Big John’s burger, cheeseburger, bacon chicken ranch, large soda and a pineapple dole whip. Photos might look small but it was enough for two adults. Everything tasted delicious. Tip- 1) Bring cash. 2) go early, the line for lunch was ok but dinner time to closing, there was always a line out the door. Also less parking. 3) when you get your food, make sure you check. They go names.
Amazing place amazing prices awesome atmosphere yummy food excellent staff. The service could’ve been better. Messed up my order twice. I was a 1-person order. Very simple & it still got messed up both times. Check your bag before you leave.
Ice cream is good but nothing special. The people who work there are miserable. Last year the woman got my order wrong and then wanted me to pay for the wrong items claiming it was my fault and I ended up walking out with no ice cream. This year we decided to give it another shot and I was fortunate to get what appeared to be the only pleasant person there. A girl with glasses and a bright pink bob. Not only was she nice when taking my order but she helped carry my order outside to my family and when my 4 year old's ice cream cup slid off the crooked table on to the ground she replaced it with no problem. I did however have another employee look extremely annoyed with the customer ahead of me for questioning the cash only policy. She looked over at me and muttered something that I didn't hear. Overall the staff is terrible. No idea why they employ such miserable people to serve ice cream.
Healthy portions, great service, decent food. Nice burger joint. I'd go back.
Be prepared for long line if your going at night. You’ll be lucky if you get your order in within 10 minutes, but they move fast. Burger disappointed me but onion rings and ice cream were good. I would call their prices cheap based on the fact that we’re in Montauk, except for the soft serve which is definitely overpriced. Good place to go if you don’t mind the line.
Their homemade ice cream is delicious. Just wish they gave another scoop or so. Being a little more generous with servings would go a long way to customer satisfaction. A large serving came with 2 scoops (2 flavors) in a waffle cone and rang in just north of $10. Brain freeze alert!
The gentleman who was originally from Jamaica, was very nice and very friendly. It was very clear what food options were available. It was three of us and we ordered two cheeseburgers with toppings, too small fries, the shrimp and chips, a small lemonade, a small Sprite and a small milkshake. The cost was over $50. The food was not bad but nothing to stand out and definitely not worth the money. There was not much flavor too much of anything we ordered, the french fries weren't bad, they were hot. The best experience was the friendliness of the gentleman who helped us, oh and the milkshake was tasty. We planned to have some of their homemade ice cream but after the experience of how much everything cost for what we ordered we were not willing to spend any more money at this place. Also, if you need to use the restroom you need to go behind the building through a white door. It was very clean. It looks like walking outside is the only way to get to the restroom though. I would not recommend this place. It wasn't horrible, but it is too expensive for what you're getting.
There’s a line out the door for… I was so shocked at how this spot was ran and the quality. There is usually a line out the door every night in the summer and I thought it clearly meant the ice cream was going to be unbelievable… definitely just your average ice cream spot, truly nothing to write home about. Cash only and was $20 for 3 single scoops.
I don’t usually leave reviews, but our experience here was so disturbing that I feel others should be warned. From the second we walked in, the woman behind the counter had an attitude—cold, aggressive, and clearly looking for a problem. She was immediately dismissive, rolled her eyes at us, and showed zero interest in helping to rectify a small spill that occurred. Things took an even worse turn when a man—who seemed to be part of the staff—inserted himself into the situation. Instead of de-escalating, he raised his voice, spoke down to us, and became increasingly aggressive. His entire demeanor was intimidating and confrontational, especially toward a group of young girls who were simply trying to enjoy an outing. It felt like he was trying to provoke a reaction, and the entire interaction was deeply unsettling. We ended up walking out without ordering anything because we genuinely felt unsafe and disrespected. No one should have to experience that level of hostility in a place that’s supposed to be fun and welcoming. I would absolutely not recommend this place.
Good food and ice cream but terrible customer service. It’s all rude nasty workers that just stare at you like you don’t belong there.
Hey Maureen- how does it feel to know that Dwayne got in our face and yelled at us at 11:20 am. Pointing fingers and telling us we had to sit outside and eat cause he needed to get home early and clean the restaurant. Disgusting.
I am so done with John’s. They screwed up the order. I got a double John burger and my buddy said he wanted a single version of what I got. The guy said do you want a plain cheeseburger (which is apparently a slider) and he said he wanted a plain single patty version of what I got. Their $7 large fries are tiny. They’re lazy and didn’t make my other friend’s wrap correctly nor did they cut it. This place has zero hospitality, the staff is rude, and they are cheap with their food. They overcooked my burger. Their ice cream isn’t even that good. Not going back there ever again. Not worth it at all! And I have no doubt they’ll delete this review like they did my last one.
Ordered chicken tenders and a hamburger. Also ordered one iced tea. Food was regular and bland. Putting ketchup helped a bit. The main plus about this place were their prices. It's fairly cheap compared to the rest of the restaurants in the area. The owner, John, was on the cash register when i ordered. I specifically told him 1 order of iced tea. He gave me a face, looked at my wife and I, and proceeded to charge 2 iced teas. I paid and let it go at the time but was not happy about it. The iced tea tasted cheap and had a weird after taste. Don't force orders on your customers. Patrons: Double check your order before paying
We stopped in during my sister’s bachelorette weekend, excited for some ice cream and good vibes — instead, we were met with immediate attitude, eye rolls, and zero basic courtesy. From the moment we walked in, the staff acted like we were a burden for simply being there. When we (politely!) said we felt uncomfortable with how we were being treated and that we were going to pass on buying anything, a man who worked there — instead of apologizing or trying to smooth things over — actually raised his voice at us. Yelled. At paying customers. Over ice cream. It was shocking, aggressive, and completely out of line. We were calm and respectful, and he escalated it for no reason. It turned what was supposed to be a fun, lighthearted stop into a genuinely upsetting experience. I don’t care how many flavors they have — no dessert is worth being disrespected and yelled at. Do yourself a favor and spend your money at a place that actually wants your business and knows how to treat people like human beings. I walked out truly shocked and speechless, as ive never had an experience like this anywhere in my entire life. I would not even recommend this place to my worst enemy.
Overpriced low quality icecream and shakes. We ordered two scopes of ice cream and one strawberry thick shake. Icecream is very sugary and the shake has artificial strawberry flavor added on top of the shake from the shake machine. The Icecream is $8.65 and the shake is $7.05. Terrible attitude from the server too.
Never in my life have I experienced nastier customer service. Its the off season... dead in there, the staff was beyond irritated with our presence. I will never go back and tell everyone I know not to waste their money on frostbitten ice cream with substandard service! WOWWWW!
