Opinions de Kakaroto Japanese Restaurant Mountain View
Had a really great experience here! Food was delicious and very reasonable prices for Mountain View and for current times. All the food came out very promptly. The Flying Dragon roll was delicious, and none of the rolls we ate were overly saturated in sauce like at other restaurants. The servers were also very attentive and hospitable. Highly recommend and would love to come back!
I had a solid business lunch with my management team here. We were a group of 8, and everyone enjoyed the atmosphere, food, and service. I had the chirashi, which was really good. The fish was fresh and the sushi rice had good flavor. The staff attended to us with great skill. I wouldn't hesitate to return.
If I could give 6 stars I wouldn't hesitate to do this. This establishment is beyond exceptional. The service was delivered by a wonderful woman named Susan who diligently kept up on all our needs with contagious energy and agreeableness. I was actually shocked by the quality at such a competitive price. I will be back for more. Blessings to this place.
Really enjoyed my visit here. It's a low key, non fussy, Japanese eatery. We didn't book, and only had to wait a few minutes before getting a table, but I have seen longer queues at other times. The menu is huge, with a large sushi selection, and very cheap wine! The chef's name sushi at the open bar, and the service staff are fantastic. We felt really welcomed and taken care of. The food was delicious! Recommend.
A hidden gem for good quality Japanese food. Fish is very fresh and portions are generous! Excellent katsu donburi and yaki udon.
We came here at lunchtime with some co-workers, and we all enjoyed our meals. I ordered two rolls of sushi, a spider roll and a volcano roll which were flavorsome. The waiter was good about water refills, and the food didn't take too long to get. I recommend
Can't get enough from the bento box! Everytime a different combo of Japanese taste.
Great adorable sushi place in the bay! I always go for lunch or dinner bento - 2/3 items depending. Good friendly service, decent portions. Ambiance is more old, unassuming vibe but a good solid spot
Perhaps I came on a slower day, but there was no wait and service was polite and quick. They patiently allowed us time to decide on our orders and food came promptly. Ordered soft shell crab, salmon roll, and tonkatsu (pork katsu). Portions were generous, the fried items were fried to perfection, and it was overall very tasty and authentic- definitely reminiscent of food I tried in Japan. The fish was fine, not the greatest sushi I’ve eaten, but I recommend the katsu and crab! Some lunch items also come with a salad and miso soup, which is nice.
Hurry in here before they come to their senses and raise their low prices. Excellent short ribs, Chicken Teriyaki, sashimi, Bento. Great service and relaxing atmosphere. Really loved it
Been here twice and love it. The price is reasonable. It costs around 80-100 bucks for 2-4 people depending on what you order. The minus point is it is often crowded.
Lovely fresh sushi. Crazy busy but at least they take reservations unless sushi Tomi.
Reasonably priced and delicious lunch box at these times of inflation. The pork belly skewer may be evil for cholesterol but very tasty. A bit pricey for the small portion, still recommend. Next time we would like to try the beef tongue skewers and chicken/leeks skewers .
This is an old school authentic, very satisfying California style Japanese restaurant. There’s a cheery vibe here. The food is top notch and there is a genuine interest on the part of all servers and management to deliver excellent service. The bento boxes are so delicious and I love that one can choose how many items one wants (2 or 3). The quality of the sashimi was spot on and the beef teriyaki that I ordered was perfectly cooked and seasoned. You just leave this place feeling better about the world.
Everything tonight was amazing! The service, the food, and the speed of our evening was incredible. Our server, Ren (Happy Birthday it turns out!) and our busser AJ went above and beyond to make our experience great, as well as the rest of the staff! We live in the East Bay (Walnut Creek) and this was some of the best sushi we've had in a long time!
I ate here last weekend and I still haven't been able to stop thinking about it. The food was exquisite, some of the best sushi I ever had. They also were doing a kakuni dish as the special of the day that was so rich I saw stars. Great service, DBZ songs playing on speakers, such a fun time. There was a little bit of a wait since it was a Friday night, but it was absolutely worth it. Excellent all around.
Been here so many times now, but the food is always fresh and delicious! Everything on the menu is very reasonably priced - lower than most Japanese restaurants in the South Bay! On several visits, we see them getting fresh fish deliveries.. makes sense seeing how busy it always is! Got to speak with the owners for a little bit and they were super friendly! They confirmed that their fish is delivered daily since everything sells out by the end of the day! Definitely worth visiting and going back to!
Lovely staff and great service! Even though they were incredibly busy (and rightfully so), we were still served very well and it felt like we’d been here before. Being from Vancouver, BC, we’re always on the hunt for great sushi and KakaRoto definitely delivered. The beef short ribs and special sushi rolls were to die for. Can’t wait to come back and enjoy ourselves again!
What an awesome sushi spot! I do like its location away from the main Downtown street in MTV. But more importantly the food is superb. Ordered the Omakase special and the fish was as fresh as you could get. Most restaurants that offer an Omakase will give you a throw away cheap roll like Your standard CA roll. Not these folks. The Omakase comes with their most expensive roll and it perfectly compliments the fish presented. I loved this place so much that I went again a few days later and the quality was the same as before. Did I mention all the Dragonball Z references in their rolls and memorabilia in their establishment? Great place to go. Enough said.
Really good sushi and sashimi here. The sashimi is fresh, tender, and beautiful color. The rice is to the right degree of stickiness and fullness. Everything is combined perfectly. We sat outside on the street and it was so fresh and nice. We chatted for a long time. The experience is superb.
Excellent sushi, excellent value for money. Sometimes that can be code for "good for the money but in this case, it's really, " just great sushi at a great price." I especially like the rolls. I've had better agedashi tofu and the tempura I think is ok, but not spectacular. The sashimi, nigiri, and creative rolls are really good. When you're in the mood for no frills sushi, this is the place to come or order in from.
Ordered the fried oyster appetizer, oysters were juicy and came with a side of tonkatsu sauce. We sat outside and the waitresses were very attentive. The green tea was delicious, perfect flavor. Also ordered the DBZ roll, soft shell crab, avocado, and unagi, also very well done. The beef sukiyaki was well done, comes with miso soup, salad, and rice. The rest of us had bento boxes, some bento options have an additional fee as listed on the menu. Overall delicious and would go again!
Kakaroto has easily become my favorite sushi restaurant in the bay area (after Daigo). Went for a date night with my boyfriend recently and the food and service were both top notch. The staff is always so incredibly friendly and attentive. The food during our last visit was amazing!! I had a dinner box that came with sashimi and my boyfriend had a bento box. I have to say that the fish in my dish was so fresh and absolutely delicious. Our bill for 2 people with dinner, an appetizer, miso soup, salad and 2 drinks only came out to less than $60 which is a steal in the bay area. This will definitely be our go-to sushi place when we're craving some fresh sashimi and rolls.
Fish is fresh, tastes great, there is lobster with sashimi set, I’ve never seen that before. Food is arranged on a wooden “plate” in a fancy way, the restaurant interior design is fancy too. Dessert is also fancy and delicious, like why a sushi restaurant has such amazing dessert? Gotta try their other stuff next time, katsu is definitely on my list.
I absolutely love this sushi spot—it’s my go-to any day of the week. The prices are reasonable, especially for sushi, and the fish is always super fresh!
Stopped in here for a dinner on Saturday night around 630 and were seated right away. We got 2 rolls, sunomono and okonomiyaki - it was all delicious and reasonably priced! We’d definitely go back.
I’ve only had the sushi here so far, but it was excellent! Super good sashimi - fresh, melts-in-your-mouth kind! Definitely coming back!
Visited the restaurant for the first time yesterday during the rain. There was no wait time and it was so cozy inside! I loved the layout and the atmosphere. The choices on the menu are various and there were even items I've not seen on any other menus so I'll definitely some back to try new things! The prices were very reasonable and the portions were good, while the food itself was delicious. Also, very nice waiters who checked in on us a were very helpful. Happy New Years, I'll be definitely back in 2025 :)
Solid Japanese food with a broad menu. I was especially happy with the pork belly option on the starters menu.
The food and services are amazing! We ordered Makimono Combo, Super Philadelphia Roll, and the Flying Dragon Roll. All are super delicious and they even offer us free heart chocolate! It was my birthday dinner and I love it! I will definitely come back again!
Got the bento w saba, bbq ribs, and pork tonkatsu. Very decent size give the price. Also got agedashi tofu which was well made and we got the godzilla roll which was fried. Not my favorite as I prefer more raw fish but I just didn't read the description carefully. There was a bit too much sauce on it for my liking. Other than that meal was great for the price!
Loved everything about this place. We went there on a Thursday night and it wasn’t that crowded. We were seated right away and our waitress was very friendly and attentive. I decided to order two veggie combos and miso soup. They roll the rolls very nicely and carefully so our orders were taking about half an hour to prepare and our waitress brought us complimentary salads because we had to wait which was very nice. We loved the salads too! When she brought the rolls we loved the look as well the taste. We also ordered the dessert which the waitress recommended the fried cheesecake which was delicious! Definitely recommend this place!
Very solid sushi and great prices here! Came on a Friday night and got seated right away outside. Also the owner is so nice - she kept talking to us and was hilarious - I think the place is obsessed with DBZ too. Good: Prices are shoe reasonable with huge portions - I really liked the tuna stuffed mushrooms and the creative sushi - the pork karaage was great too. My favorite roll was the bay one and the dragon roll. Bad: Place is super popular so the wait time is long! Overall super great place and will come again!
Visited on a Saturday afternoon and was pleasantly surprised to see the place buzzing. Service was quick and friendly. Portion sizes were generous and prices felt reasonable. We ordered the sushi combo (California roll + sashimi), bento box, chicken gyoza, and seaweed salad - all were delicious and fresh. Would definitely recommend!
Ordered sushi takeout. Everything was delicious and very fairly priced! Would definitely order from here again!

We got three different sushi rolls as well as the tuna stuffed mushroom. All the food was very delicious as well as fresh and high quality. The staff as well as the owners are also extremely friendly and professional.

Reasonably priced fresh fish and well made tempura. The specials samples are presented in a very attractive manner. This place is a block away from the main Castro strip, worth stopping by to try.
This place was very tasty. Everyone I was with got bento boxes for dinner, and all the components were nicely done. It was a long wait for a Tuesday night, but once we were seated, the staff was very attentive and prompt without rushing us even though we were seated close to closing time due to the wait. Edited to add: our most recent trip was a little disappointing. Good things included that the food came quickly once ordered and they made space for a stroller. I found my tuna sashimi in my bento box was somewhat fibrous. The salmon, however, was perfect. We didn't appear to have a dedicated server, so we had to flag someone down to order and to get the bill.
Friendly staff, tasty sushi. Actually lets customers use the restroom. Great for both outdoor dining and takeout. Pretty much my only complaint is that sometimes the food can take a while. But otherwise wonderful
Good izakaya / all-purpose Japanese spot in downtown Mountain View. Locals think so too, because it was packed for lunch on a random weekday, when the rest of MTV was pretty quiet. We got a few dishes to share. The sushi is pretty good, for a place that serves a variety of food. The tuna stuffed mushroom sounded really interesting and it was actually pretty good. Service was a little spotty but they seemed understaffed. They were very friendly!
Been twice for lunch and the prices are pretty solid for specials. Being able to make a 2 or 3 item bento is a plus, and their rice bowls are solid. Sushi options are massive, with a lot of "novelty" kinds with a few solid options in the mix. Definitely more of a casual than fancy/pricey joint. Wait staff is very friendly, and the space inside can be a little small when they're busy but they offer a few seats outside.
If you’re looking for a quick fix for sushi that’s not the highest quality, but still taste good, this is the place in MV. Tried this place for the first time, we got the sushi omakase, sashimi deluxe, and baked mussel. One star off because it was a heck of long wait for a place wasn’t even packed.
The best sushi place around and it's our go-to. Bento is priced as expected, but for lunch is nearly the same menu and a fair bit cheaper. Very big and filling meal. The fish quality matches the price and the grilled fish isn't dry. The miso is a bit sweet, but it's fine. There is usually never a wait.
Baked Mussel 5 topped w/ imitation crab, mayo, rich, flavorful Croquette 4 cream corn, deep fried Flying Dragon Roll 4 unagi, avocado Hey Hamachi Roll 3 slightly fishy red hamachi Salmon Sashimi 4 fresh Hamachi Sashimi 3 red, slightly fishy Tuna Sashimi 0 Salad 0 lettuce, mayo Miso soup 3 not too salty, little tofu or seaweed
Friends recommended this for Japanese food. They ordered a bento with mackerel, salmon and pork katsu and a seafood sukiyaki. We ordered a few sushi rolls: Godzilla roll, Flying Dragon and Spider roll. We shared a bottle of sake and had an ice cream for dessert. The food was tasty, we were surprised with the fried sushi. The textures were nice. Service was efficient and nice.
Tried the 2 item bento box with Saba and Sashimi. It cam with salad, soup and rice. Portion size was good. My friend tried the spicy salmon roll and sex on the mountain roll. 6 pieces per roll. Both were good and fresh. They also serve hot tea upon arrival :)
We ordered takeout before, and the bentos were pretty good. So, we decided to give dine in a try. It was pretty busy for dinner even on weekdays. Today’s special was good, but the sushi combo was definitely below the bar— rice was not thoroughly cooked, and it was too packed to have any air in between. Unfortunately, their bento was more impressive than their sushi.
Good sushi 🍣, good service. If you arrive when they open on the weekends, there is no wait. The menu has all the favorites you might expect, especially the nilgiri choices. For the vegetarian in your party they have a pretty good veggie combo platter ($14). Most of there sushi were pretty fresh. The fatty tuna ($10/piece) was only ok, so perhaps skip that one. The wait staff is super friendly, and attentive. We never had to as for water.

Kakaroto Japanese restaurant has went down. The quantity of food you get is less. The consistency of food present changes each time you go. Sometimes the rice has sesame seeds. Sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes you get a good amount of green salad. Sometimes you don't. It seems like the prices are getting more expensive, but you also get less amount of food. We used to always come here, but now we don't.
What happened to this place?! We had been coming here for the past 5+ years, and knew the waitress and hostess. However, since they opened up Mr baos kitchen, they moved all their A team to the other restaurant and left the B or C team here. The service was so slow when we went, took literally an hour after ordering to get our sushi. And the restaurant was not full, many empty tables. Whatever choices the owner made, clearly favor their new restaurant instead of kakaroto
At first, I really like the restaurant and the food so I made a reservation for the party of 8 people on one weekend lunch after trying myself one day during the week. Everything came out good and fast but only thing really upset me was that the waiter didn’t notify me that there was already 18 % service fee added to my check. Not knowing this, I added another 15% tip. I felt kinda scammed cause when I paid with my credit card, he took away the original check and only gave me the credit card transaction paper with the final price that has blank tip section where I had to sign. And I only found out at home because I asked for the original check since I wanted to double check the price for each menu cause there were 8 items. After reviewing the check at home, I realized that there was already tip added to the check and the waiter didn’t circle it or didn’t tell me. So I called the restaurant and complained that no one notified me about the service charge that was added to the food price and tax and requested the second tip refund as the tip has been paid double. Fortunately, I got the second tip back but think about it, if I didn’t find out myself, basically I have paid over 30 % tip. So watch out guys! The waiter is not being honest!!!
From outside, this restaurant may not look as appealing and inviting, but by the time we were done with dinner, this restaurant was completely packed. My friends and I were the first ones to be seated when the restaurant opened for dinner, but despite that, the service was really slow and resulted in an unpleasant dining experience. One person in our group was already done with their meal by the time our meal arrived so you can say, we arrived there together but we didn't eat together. We ordered their Nigeri deluxe, omakase, tuna stuffed mushrooms, bento box, and chicken karaage. The cut of the fish on all the nigiri pieces was decent, but the rice was a bit undercooked. The omakase comes included 9 pieces of sushi, 12 pieces of sashimi, and a poseidon roll. For $70 price tag, this is a pretty good omakase deal in terms of quantity. It was all very filling. Tuna stuffed mushrooms were decent. Chicken karaage was okay. It wasn't crispy at all (felt soggy). The bento box was a very decent portion size as well, and it came with salad, fish, rice, chicken, and fruits. Regardless of what you order, you'll be served miso soup to start with. The miso soup was decent. The staff was really friendly and nice but the service didn't live up to the expectation.

Food was decent but the service was awful. Waited 20 minutes for a two-ingredient drink and even longer for our sushi rolls. Everybody’s items came out at a completely different time, one of them being a full bento box that was served 10 minutes before my drink.
This low score review is for that ONE extremely rude waiter. To be clear, the food was decent, the other waiters were friendly. It was our first time visiting the restaurant, but that one waiter was extremely, like slamming the food onto our table multiple times, so it could not be an accident. In addition, the waiter talked to us in a rude manner. What’s more ridiculous is that the waiter talked to other tables with polite tone. I don’t know what’s the issue here given that it’s only our first time visiting here. We feel not welcomed and discriminated here for no reason. I don’t recommend trying your luck here.
Placed the dinner take out order at lunch time specifying 6:00 pm pick up. Waited 40 minutes to finally get the order. Very poor time management on their part.
Don't come here unless you make a reservation. They told us our wait would be 30 minutes, but it ended up being an hour, since people with reservations kept coming in. The food also took 30 minutes to arrive, and we ordered the second we sat down. Food-wise, it's decent. Variety of creative rolls to choose from. Had the DBZ roll and it was pretty tasty. The curry udon was passable though. Not worth the portion size and it tasted pretty generic. My friends also got some creative rolls and enjoyed the food. It's decent food, but I'm not sure if it's worth the wait. You're probably better off doing takeout or pickup if you want to eat here.

Once a nice tasty sushi place, now just a shell of its former self. With sushi rolls that easily fall a part and a staff that ignores tables for 30 mins even when the restaurant is 80% empty. Do yourself a favor and order pick up instead.
It was a little warm inside and we’d like to take our son to the outdoor seating. The waitress tried so hard to convincing indoor seating is better for us. We moved outside anyway. And she put us on the smaller table that can only seat 2 people yet we have 3, including a one year old. She just won’t give us the table that seats 4 people insisting that it’s reserved. I will not sit on a small table with my baby as there’s no way the dishes would fit in while out of his reach. There are so many other restaurants to choose from in dt mtv, I’ve decided to go to another restaurant then another waitress says we can sit the 4 people table. Extremely not family friendly. Food was mediocre. Crab meat is imitation which was not noted on the menu. I will not come again.
Let me preface this review by saying I visited this restaurant once before with three others and we enjoyed it. Hence, why I made a reservation for 2 on April 14th, 2023 at 7:30pm and was promptly seated upon arriving at 7:35pm despite there being a wait. However, everything went downhill afterwards. My partner and I weren't greeted for 20 minutes, after which we only received water. After another 15 minutes, our order was finally taken. We were told our rolls would take a little time, though no food arrived even 25 minutes later despite our server telling us on a few occasions it was coming. After over 1 hour with only being served water, we decided to leave. Not to mention, we counted at least 5 tables seated long after us that received food before us; one of those tables even received a SECOND ORDER during this time. VERY DISAPPOINTING. I will caution others from visiting here, especially with so many sushi/Japanese options in the Bay. I would leave zero stars if Google would allow.
Came to eat dinner with our family, and had one of the worst experiences dining. Get ready to pay for small portions of food, get ignored for requests, and meet uneducated cashiers, who attempted to charge us twice. Couldn’t get a hold of a waitress, had to ask about 5 waitresses to get a to go box and ended up getting myself up, and getting a to go box myself. Seriously could say one of the worst customer service. Food in general was ehh.
1/ order online supposed to be ready by 5:15pm but wait for more than half an hour to get the order, very inefficient 2/ food quality is bad, worst Katsu curry and sushi I have ever eat, taste plain
The sushi fish wasn't fresh and was bland. All the rolls we ordered were too saucey and I couldn't really taste the food itself. They were covered in mayo-based super sweet sauce. The last straw was a piece of wire brush we found in one of the rolls. Plain dangerous, AND, nobody ever even apologized!
Ate here three times but last two times here, I got severe stomach ache both times and had the runs about an hour after eating some sashimi. Will try to avoid coming here again as I gave it another shot after getting sick one time but it has happened twice.
[please think twice if you order delivery] Huge safety concern, found a live bug in the salad, that's a horrible experience. Update. Ordered one delivery on Aug 4, the sashimi is not fresh, super smelly, fish almost rot, and makes me sick. I think something is probably wrong, are they trying to sell bad stuff for delivery orders?
1 star experience, potential for value meal so 2-3 star potential. Ordered: -edamame (garlic + spicy): first order messed up, and just gave plain. Came back and added the sauce, which they poured too much of and ended up being too salty -dinner entree 2 combo: tempura and teriyaki chicken was ok -dinner entree 3 combo: tonkatsu was good, tempura was ok. Beef teriyaki was absolutely terrible. super thin, cold and dry. Brought up to the staff that the beef was really bad and they were super defensive. They remade one, which was a bit hotter, but still super dry and thin. At all cost, avoid the beef teriyaki... The value of this spot is pretty good. Tonkatsu is a safe order, but NEVER order the beef teriyaki haha. Parking is relatively tough in the area in peak hours.
The food was average, and the service was very slow. The long line wasn’t due to how good the food was, but because it took so long for dishes to come out. Also, the bill only showed the total amount without any itemized details, and it seemed like the tip was already included. Later, I checked the menu on DoorDash and realized the final bill was much higher than expected. I recommend avoiding this place unless they change the way they handle billing, to avoid being overcharged.
Got stomach ache for a couple of days after eating here. We ordered the Makimono Combo, Super Philadelphia Roll, and the Flying Dragon Roll. The taste was decent, but I have no choice but to give 1 star because I got stomach aches for the next 2 days after eating here, most likely from the raw fish ingredients. The service wasn't that great, seemed like they rushed us to finish near closing time.
