Opinions de The Schooner Restaurant Nederland
The Schooner consistently has fresh, tasty food, with excellent service. Their shrimp dishes, fresh fish, and sides are always well prepared. I get the captain's platter which has a good variety of seafood on it. The Fisherman platter is another great option.
The Schooner offers a wonderful dining experience. We regularly drive down to Nederland from Beaumont to eat there. They always have great tasting food, friendly service, and a casual atmosphere, all at a reasonable price. Whenever my daughter is in town from college, The Schooner is the first place she wants to go to eat out. Looking forward to our next visit.
Love the stuffed flounder !!! Favorite meal in the whole world and schooner makes the best Augratin potatoes delicious, gumbo delicious
My son, my grandson and l ate lunch there today. It was the 1st time . The food, the service and the atmosphere was awesome. Our server Parker was awesome. He answered our questions about the menu, kept our drinks ( tea and Dr. Pepper) glasses filled. Again, everything was a 5 star experience. So, if you go in there , ask for Parker.
This place is one of the few elegant restaurants in the area & it has maintained it's prestige for 3 generations for a reason! The food is great AND timely! You get your appetizers & salads when you're supposed to, the restaurant is so clean & you are so very well taken care of every time you come in. I always feel welcomed at the Schooner's. ALSO, it is a GREAT place to work! The environment is fast paced & the bosses do not play around with their business (naturally) If you're new to the restaurant industry & want a good first start at learning proper serving etiquette, highly recommend walking in & filling out an application. I absolutely loved my time working at the Schooner & I'm sure you'll love your time eating there!
I started typing a review trying to brag on all of great things about my 1st meal there today and the next thing I know I have written a long and boring short story. So to cut it short I will just say that the food was excellent and lots off it, service was outstanding, loved the atmosphere. Just a quiet, casual, no glitz; down to earth place with great food. Needless to say I will be back and with their very large selection of items I will never have to eat the same thing twice.
We did our annual Christmas luncheon here this year. Food was delicious, as always! I got the stuffed flounder for meal, with boudain balls and crab balls as appetizers for all of us. Yum!!! Sherry, the server was fantastic! I have been actually coming here since a teenager in high school..over 50 years! I would highly recommend Schooners for any occasion.
Good seafood and the chopped sirloin is awesome for land dwellers!
Longtime customer. Great then and great now. I especially enjoy being served by Tammy. My favorites are the snow crabs and gumbo, along with a Freshie from the bar!
Excellent, excellent restaurant. Well decorated to match the vibe (authentic/yacht club-esque; lots of wood trim) music was relaxing and perfect volume. Delicious plates, with everything on the menu having well written descriptions that make you salivate. Definitely a top tier seafood eatery; and would hold its own in any major US city. A hidden gem out here. Prices range from $20-$40 and worth every penny. I ordered the grilled red snapper with pontchetrain (misspelled sry) sauce. Gratin Potato side, and house dressing (A+) on salad. In my party of 3, every dish was cooked to perfection, fish was flaky and not rubbery; fried items were crisp and cooked but not overdone. 10/10. Also, restrooms were immaculate, and waitstaff were friendly and attentive. Will definitely be revisiting if/when able, and highly recommend!
Been around for 60 years for good reason. The food is great. The service is friendly and efficient.
The blackened mahi was excellent!!!!! Perfect amount seasoning to fish ratio. So moist. This is my go to meal.
Passing through. Had the stuffed flounder filet! Was awesome! Server, Tammy was friendly, professional. Highly recommend this place!
Dinner at 6:00 on a Friday night and they were packed. We were seated promptly and our server was on it. The salad to start with was fresh as always. This is one of the few places I don’t skip the salad. Seafood and crab gumbo was delicious. Their gumbo cannot be beat! Full of shrimp and crab with a dark roux just like it should be. Fried oyster dinner was delicious as well. The oysters were cooked perfectly with a nice crispy coating. The au gratin potatoes are on my top 5 list of favorite side dishes. Don’t skip this gem!
This is a great place with friendly fast service and large portions of delicious food the menu has so many options to choose from I can't wait to go again
We eat here every Thursday night and it never disappoints. Their fried Gator is so good and soft. Cooked to perfection. Neve chewy or overcooked.
Food was good could have used a tad more seasoning but my waiter was amazing he was always checking on me my water glass stayed full and he was very friendly and helpful great job
We enjoyed celebrating our 33 anniversary with a low key dinner at our favorite seafood restaurant. Our meal was perfect and the margaritas are great.
We love The Schooner. We have been repeat customers since the 80s. Always great with a nice variety of seafood and a few steaks. It’s always clean and calm and the waitstaff are pleasant & accurate.
We went for the first time and had great service and great food. Ordered a hurricane that was delish. Then fresh salads. We also tried the seafood gumbo and really loved the flavor of that! We settled on a shared plate of the Shrimp platter and it definitely did NOT disappoint. The stuffed shrimp was amazing and the flavors of the grilled, blackened and fried shrimp were awesome. We then decided on a shared bread pudding and was shocked at the size of it for the price because that would feed 4 people!! So we had to take half of that to go and our waitress Aliciaia was kind of enough to make sure we had a little extra cream and berries for the next session on that wonderful bread pudding. I would certainly return and recommend you try them
Stopped in last Friday after working in the Cold weather all week, for some Nice, warm Gumbo! As a Person with strong, Authentic Cajun background from South Louisiana, This hit the spot and was 10/10! The waiter was attentive and polite, Everything about my experience was very appreciated! I will return for sure!!
It was my first time eating here, and I had the sausage and chicken jambalaya. The flavor was amazing, but I was disappointed in the amount of sausage and chicken with the rice. The menu had lots of options that looked really good. I definitely want to go back and try something different.
I ordered a $14.95 lunch special consisting of catfish (1), fried shrimp (4), crab balls (4), side of your choice (I got French fries), side salad (upgraded mine to Greek salad for $2.95) and bread (not pictured). Everything was delicious and cooked perfectly. The portions are generous. I have plenty left over for another meal. This was my first time to try their Greek salad, and it was fantastic! Its little to-go container was so stuffed I had to dump it into a big salad bowl!
The service was relatively fast. Take fried boudin balls and stuffed mushrooms were excellent and well seasoned. All of the fried items we ordered were very well prepared and tasty. The Catfish Orleans was good but it's not the best crawfish etoufee I've had. I felt it was lacking a little flavor. The only disappointing dish was the dirty rice. I can't say that it tasted like any dirty rice I've had anywhere in 45 years. I had to send that back and replace it with green beans, which were fine.
Had a crazing for seafood and this place always comes to mind. Never have I been disappointed nor left hungry. We had a waitress who was brand new but did an amazing job. Wish I could remember her name but very friendly. Started out with a dozen oysters and they completely hit the spot. But their rolls and little toasties are always amazing, stinks if you are watching carbs. I had their grilled seafood platter which had shrimp, oysters, scallops, tilapia, potatoes, au gratin. The potatoes at gratin are always the star here. But everything was great and always on point. Without a doubt one of my favorite from childhood till now.
The food was delicious and the service was excellent. I enjoyed the family type atmosphere. We will be back.

Been going to this place since I was a kid. Declined a bit over the years, but great service and atmosphere
Service was amazing! The fish I had was a little soft, overcooked. Atmosphere was great.
Traveled from Houston for the smoked crabs and it was worth the trip.
Edited. Update. Went back to Port Arthur on business & its gumbo season. Very good gumbo! The seafood deluxe size gumbo with their crackers was excellent. I even went back the following day for another (to-go) bowl for lunch. Suggested by the locals & DID NOT disappoint! I scraped the plate clean!
Wait staff is top notch. Good place with its own food-style. Definitely worth a try.
Prices are high, food is fine. Clean, fast service, good top shelf margarita 😁
Enjoyed the crawfish bisque and one of their delicious grilled seafood platters. Enough for 2 to share and perfectly prepared. Our server Darla was prompt, friendly and a real delight. If I had one suggestion for the management… I’d recommend dimming the lights a bit. It felt a bit like my high-school cafeteria. Can’t wait to come back.
As we travel south of I-10 exploring the Gulf Coast we try to eat local every meal. Schooner's is a local local institution. Outstanding service. Gracie was great. Attentive, knowledgeable, helpful and very nice. Reasonable prices. Full service bar. The food was as southern and coastal as we had hoped for. Deep fried Crab Fingers (crab claws) started our meal, Sharon enjoyed the baked whole flounder with a basic green salad and red beans and rice (outstanding) on the side. I went all in to my childhood roots and had the fried seafood platter. Catfish, shrimp and another of my all time favorites, stuffed crab. I also had the salad and red beans and rice. Highly recommended for travelers or locals.
The food was nasty. We had multiple dishes with our party of 30, and the fish tasted old. The potatoes gratin were crusty. The salad was wilted. There was hair in the gumbo, and the rue was so dark…

Management was rude because my mother in law fell at the establishment. Food exemplary and all other staff members were very polite.
I had the fried shrimp, which I did not care for. The batter was very hard and camouflaged the shrimp. The potato augraten was too salty and non of my friends were able to eat it. The appetizer of stuffed mushrooms was excellent!
Just a shared experience. The young man on the phon taking the order was exceptionally impatient, constantly moving to the next step as we proceeded with making a three(3) person order. I did mention the concern to the young man when I picked up the order, hoping he will us the information as a training tool.
Service was very good.Food was not what we were looking for.Gumbo not very good.Salad dressing runny and bread wasn’t very good.We ordered some kind of scalloped potatoes that had a funny taste.Overall not worth the money.Probably won’t be back!
Visiting from Houston and tried this place. Food was just ok and customer service was not of my liking, our server was dry and somehow weird. We had some questions about the menu but were hesitant due to her demeanor and decided not to ask. The fundue however, gets five stars. Not too crazy about returning.
Ordered blackened Flounder with mushroom sauce. I could have done better with less sodium. Disappointed for sure. Waitress was great.
This restaurant has been around for quite some time, and it needs a little updating. We were not that impressed with the gumbo nor the pontchartrain. The oysters were ok, but wished we had crackers or something with it. We did not get any kind of bread either. However, the rib eye steak and onion rings saved the day.
It was OK overall... I would definitely recommend their seafood gumbo. It was good. We ordered oysters first thing and the waiter came back 10 minutes later to inform us there will be no oysters. Seemed like the same seasoning on all the fiah diahes we ordered.
After reading several local reviews, we decided to give it a try. I'm not one to go out of my way to give a "less than" review but here we are. We were seated right away & got our beverages quickly. Although, there are many items to choose from, it seems like just another menu from the area. The prices were high. I did not like that you have to pay $2 extra for grilled food or $7.95 to add a topping to fish. There is nothing special about this restaurant. The bread they give you to start was dry & tasted old. Our salads were floppy & the dressing was overly runny. The baked potatoes had a reheated flavor. We both ordered a platter to try a few things. The bbq crab was as extremely dry & there was no way to eat any of it. It was a crumbly mess. The scallops were like rubber & very tiny. The fried shrimp, stuffed crab, & catfish were very good. They do have good tartar & cocktail sauce. They also do not clear your table until you leave. We had to shimmy dishes & garbage to get it out of the way as we ate. As visitors to the area, we were not impressed with what should have been a genuine SETX seafood experience. I don't think we will give it a 2nd try. Maybe we just had an off night but with the $90 spent, that's not acceptable. I really hoped this place was going to be all the hype. Sorry.
service was good and salad fresh. Fried shrimp was not good. In my opinion it almost tasted as if it was refried. Tartar sauce was good. \n\n\nWas working in the area and just gave it a try.

So my Husband and I went to the Schooner restaurant and we sat at the bar area! And I just seemed like a blah atmosphere. And there were a bunch of young people standing around. The restaurant was very out dated. So my husband ordered a cold mug and glass had a film on it. I and we ordered shrimp and catfish for him and I had shrimp and stuffed shrimp. And they started us off with a salad that looked as if it had been sitting out all day long And just didn't taste good at all. So that was a no go. And about 20 minutes later we received out food. 5 shrimp and 2 pieces of catfish with steamed broccoli. And I had 5 shrimp and 2 stuffed shrimp and baked potato. Oh yes I had a diet coke. 56.12 the prices are ridiculous. And the food was not that good at all. We definitely will not be back. It definitely needs some TLC And New Management.
My family and I have eaten here for over 25 years and have always had delicious food. Today was not that day unfortunately. We had the popcorn shrimp that were very over cooked and some tasted like iodine. We also had the stuffed crab and is always my favorite on the menu. Today it was filled with so much red pepper that it was not enjoyable. We also had the shrimp gumbo which I never pass up and the gumbo was entirely too spicy with seasoning or red pepper. I was disappointed in the taste of my food and will probably not be back to eat here.
My extended family has raved about this place for decades so I stopped in while traveling through the area. Basic fried seafood dinner. It was ok, Stuffed crab was seriously lacking crab. Dirty rice was pretty bland for my taste. Service was not very attentive. Locals love it but it wasn't great for me. Maybe I just came on an off day.
Schooner used to serve fresh gulf shrimp and fresh seafood. They’ve crossed over to the dark side and now serve the frozen variety. It’s really sad. This used to be our go to restaurant when we’d come back home to visit. Not any more 😢
Baked potato over microwaved, trout was tiny & sliced in half to appear larger, oysters had no flavor & crab fingers meh. Quality definitely gone down at this establishment.
Saw this historic restaurant on a television show. Decided to make the hour long trek with my wife on a Saturday evening to give it a try. Appetizers - BBQ crabs were way overcooked and had absolutely no seasoning. Charbroiled oysters barely had any parmesan; were also way overcooked, and had a funny taste. Zucchini fries were good. Entrees - Greek salads were poorly made (had a piece of the dirty root part of the lettuce in it) wilted lettuce. Grilled whole flounder with zydeco sauce was once again extremely over-cooked and somehow had almost no flavor whatsoever. Lobster thermidor was lukewarm and runny. Garlic toast was stale. Red beans and rice were excellent. If the red beans and rice had been worth $180 it would’ve been a decent night as our server was amazing. Will not be going back. Entirely too much going wrong to be redeemable
This was my first time visiting and the service was horrible. The appetizers were the best part. The entrees were NOT good at all and again neither was the service. The waitress rarely checked on us. She even asked us if we wanted our tickets before she took our entrées order. I’ll definitely go back one day hopefully the service will be better. I also want to try the fried seafood. I hope the fried seafood is as good as the appetizers were.

I would like to say i've been going to schooners for the past fourteen years of my life. Today was my final day that I will be going to a establishment that requires tips when you eat there. To me tips are deserved not given. To have the owner come to our table and state that we make the staff cry, quite there jobs because they don't want to wait on us. It is not my fault that the wait staff gets paid so little. I quote " If your not going to tip don't come back" unquote... How is that professional?? Yes we don't tip 20 or 30 dollars when the bill is 100 dollars. Should we tip when the waitress is having a attitude or forgets to fill our drinks when it's been over 1 hour since she hasn't came by to check on us, or has a attitude when throwing the salad plates!!!! How is this even possible????
Brought my Aunt there Saturday night for her birthday and we were disappointed that we weren’t served fresh seafood and fish. The fried shrimp were frozen. The fried oysters were smaller than a quarter. All the fresh seafood that’s comes from the gulf and you serve frozen and probably imported seafood. I know this restaurant didn’t start out serving this. The service was excellent and the atmosphere was good 👍🏻. The food gets 1 star ⭐️
Waited an hour for a steak that was not the way I ordered it sent back and took another 30 minutes to get it and then got food poisoning from the lobster. Amazing
First time here. Had a big craving for seafood or fish. Ordered the trout and grilled green beans. Trout was tough, with little taste, green beans just tasted burnt. Server disappeared for 25 minutes. I didn't fill my craving so I figured something else might be better. I ordered a bowl of seafood gumbo, not impressed, didn't finish the bowl. Waitress was friendly and did a good job, besides the little absent period. Restaurant was nice and clean, but I won't be back. I sat and read reviews for 25 minutes. Then decided to post one. I did not contact a Manager, because I ordered the Meal, not looking for a discount or a free meal. I just wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
Walked in last night around 7:30 pm. Was seated with menus. We sat there at least 5 minutes watching 2 waitresses visit and laughing with a customer at another table. Several waiters moving around visiting with others. I think there were customers at 5 tables not including us. So they were not busy at all. No one even came to our table to take our drink orders. The waitresses kept looking at us but didn't offer their service at all. They did mention us to a waiter that was at another table but by this time I d had enough. We walked out and went to Tia Juanita's. We were seated quickly and had ordered drinks as soon as we were seated. Their food was excellent as well. This was our second visit to Schooners and not as pleasant as the first. Not sure we will try a third time.
I recently ordered a captains plate to go for my 93 year-old dad which he was looking forward to. Usually, the meals are decent. The delivery service brought it within 15 minutes, The food was horrible definitely was leftovers from the previous night. I had ordered that at 11 AM. I spoke with the manager, and he said the food was always fresh. All I can say is do not order to go early in the morning
Worse food I have eaten in a long time. Manager said he was sorry. It’s way too expensive to eat out to waste money on a place like this. Sorry doesn’t cut it.
The MANAGER needs to be fired 😳 😠 😡!! Our 1 server for 30+ people was doing his very best but that Manager was HORRID!! We are a group who scheduled ahead of time, so they knew we were coming. They had ONE SERVER!?! He gave us a paper 📃 Menu off a printer with VERY FEW Menu choices and NOT ONE price on the entire paper. Our group had several elderly people w/ Dietary Restrictions. The Manager could NOT have cared less. 😠 😡 Food ALLERGY Sufferers BEWARE ⚠️ ⚠️ ⚠️. NEVER again.
The food gave me poisoning, the food was more like a wasted snack. The meat was frozen or pre-made and cooked to long the meat stuck to the bone. The girls bathroom sinks didn't work at all so all the women had to wait in a line at the family bathroom to wash their hands. The potato was just nasty and burnt half through.
Came as a group, setup in advance and was given a menu with only a few items to order from, and was only given 1 server for a group of 30. We had people in the group that have dietary restrictions. So I went to order up at the front to get a to go order, and was with a few other from our group when the owner told the others that he couldn't allow them to order to go orders and take them back to the room. He began refusing to allow others to order to go as well. He then ( owner ) had the gall to call our event organizer a liar... Felt like we were discriminated against because we were a group of over 50 year old patrons. I WILL Never will come back to this place again. The service was horrible! I didnt even try to get something to eat, I just walked out. To be given a limited menu, with no prices on it, and then the attitude was reprehensible. I WILL NEVER COME BACK HERE AGAIN.
Normally I have a great experience with dinner here, not tonight. I took my family out for steaks and out of the 4, 3 Ribeye steaks were 90% fat and completely inedible. When we alerted a manager he was immediately offended saying his father personally cut the meat and that they would not be remaking our meals as they would turn out the exact same (which has never been the case any time we’ve been here previously). The only saving grace is our waitress was so sweet and understanding, she handled the situation very well.
