Opinions de Carnitas Ramirez New York
Carnitas Ramirez is a true gem! Couldn't be happier to have an authentic taqueria in the East Village. They offer a selection of different cuts of pork, allowing you to choose your favorite or opt for the chef's choice—a mix of different cuts. Plus, there's a rotating seasonal vegetarian option on offer so everyone can indulge (I can attest to the papas rajas tacos - amazing!). The salsa bar is a standout feature, offering a variety of authentic salsas that perfectly complement every bite. Grab a cold Topo Chico to balance out the spice! What truly sets Carnitas Ramirez apart, though, is their exceptional service. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and truly passionate about delivering a fantastic dining experience. They make you feel like part of the family from the moment you walk in. Their passion for what they create is evident in even the smallest details, from the bright rotulos out front (hand painted by co-owner Tania) down to the telanovelas playing in the back room. Overall, a must-visit and incredible addition to the NYC food scene!
Arguably the best tacos in the city. The staff are very engaging and knowledgeable in explaining the type of cuts for their all pork tacos. They have a salsa bar on the side, which I def recommend! $5 tacos in the city has become the norm, but these are the first where I still feel like I’m getting a steal. The pork is so juicy and full of flavor, you can tell they’ve been cooking in the lard for hours on end. I definitely recommend this place to anyone who wants to try pork tacos!
best tacos in manhattan. specialists in pork / carnitas so important to know that going in. love this place, everything is bursting with flavor and the service is always warm and friendly. feels like a bit of a gem since sister restaurant taqueria ramirez always has a line out the door in greenpoint.
Words cannot describe how great this place is. Coming from Chicago where there is a prominent carnitas scene, this place exceeds all expectations. The surtido taco was by far the best thing I got. It’s also worth noting the tortillas are hand made so they are super soft. This is a must visit.
Such a unique place. Great atmosphere, excellent tacos, chill staff, and even a back room with a old TV blasting old school Mexican shows. I got the cut with all of the pig parts which had a good texture even though I wasn't used to all that on a taco. Going back I think I'd try a more standard cut like pork butt since that's my preference. either way, awesome spot
Wide range, nose to tail! All fast, light and!delicious. Try the fried tacos with the brain!
I have tried good tacos of all kinds in Queens,BK, and LA, as well as various cites. This is hands down the best taco I have ever had!
My friend has lived in the city for a long time and said these are the best tacos he's ever had. We ate there on Friday night and it really was a memorable meal. Other than many different cuts of pork tacos, they only have a few different items on the menu and pork is the only meat they serve, but they do it very well. There's a large image of a pig on the wall that shows where the cut of pork comes from and the name for it. I had four tacos and chose a variety of pork and went back for a 5th. They were all delicious. You put the toppings on yourself.
With so many taco spots in NYC, standing out isn’t easy — but this place nails it. I’ve never been to Mexico, but somehow this feels authentic. Everything’s made with heart, skill, and serious flavor. The real star? The consommé. For just $5, you get a steaming bowl packed with flavor — rich, comforting, and perfect after a long day of guiding tours and pounding the pavement. Grab a taco, sip the broth, and take a breather. This one’s a keeper.
I finally understand why anyone LOVES tacos. Before Carnitas, I was, ‘why would anyone really wanna eat a stupid taco?!’ Now I’m a taco devotee, wandering around wondering if I’m hungry enough or nearby enough… to get a taco!!! Freshest 1) pork meats in gravy, 2) hand made tacos and 3) the best toppings. Yay, Carnitas!!!
From someone who grew up eating carnitas from my family in Michoacán, I can wholeheartedly say this place does a beautiful homage to the dish. I sincerely appreciated the attention to detail, warm atmosphere that teleports you to Mexico, and ability to pick and choose just what parts of the pork you wanted in your tacos. It really does take me back home to me as a kid asking my mom to give me x,y,z pieces in my tacos…if you go, I recommend you try my favorite which is maciza, cuero, y costilla mixed together. Thank you chef! Un honor conocerlo y nos vemos pa la próxima!!
This is the winning spot from our taco crawl (multiple places in one day). They only use pork! Every part of the pig, some like belly done in different ways of cooking. Great sauces, exceptional service and a funky feeling atmosphere. This was a hands down, clear winner and they get the No.1 which another place uses in their name.
So excited to have an outpost of taqueria Ramirez in Manhattan!!!! We stopped by on a Saturday night and the line was quite short. We ordered and got our food in 5-10 minutes. The cheek taco was amazing! Their tortillas and salsas are incredible. You also have the option to add chicharron to your taco. The perfect stop for an after bar snack in the east village
TBH I have no idea what parts of the pig I just ate since I asked for 4 of their most popular tacos so I can’t offer recommendations. However, just go and ask for the same. The best tacos I’ve had in NYC. I really don’t leave reviews either but I bet these tacos could bring peace in the Middle East.
1 Barriga y 1 Lengua taco is all I could handle as there was dinner plans not too far off. The hype is real, hit mid-afternoon, muy tranquilo and no wait. The flavors were amazing, the barriga was luscious and indulgent while the lengua had some really developed flavor in it and the tortillas stood up really well to both very full tacos. Toppings bar adds everything you need, acidity and spicy bite, you’re supposed to put a little of everything on right?? Right ?? 😂😂 Worth an out of the way journey in a city filled with more than you could ever try. Gracias a CR 🙏🏼
These tacos in NYC are the best I’ve ever had! The star of the show is the pork—it’s juicy, flavorful, and cooked to perfection. When I first walked in, it was a bit confusing, but the pictorial menu makes it super easy to understand what’s what, especially if you’re not familiar with the different cuts. There’s a section with pickled onions, chilies, and salsas where you can customize your tacos—every single topping was delicious. The vibe of the place is energetic and welcoming. I would definitely recommend it and will definitely be coming back.
I came here as a result of my foodie trip to Mexico City that left me craving an authentic Mexican street taco and this spot delivered in every way! Despite being an all-pork menu, there are so many different options to choose from. The highlights for me were the pork cheek tacos and the tongue was a close second! This spot is a must visit for any fan of authentic Mexican street tacos!
These tacos are incredible—the meat is so tender it practically melts in your mouth. Honestly, they’re even better than Los Tacos No. 1, and the best part? No long lines to deal with. The staff was super friendly, and the atmosphere felt warm and welcoming, like being part of a little community. Highly recommend!
Here’s a hill I’d happily die on: You’d be hard pressed to find a more satisfying and comforting meal in the entire city. You can’t go wrong with anything on the menu, including the Torta lunch special (only Wednesday thru Friday). Their lengua is by far the best I’ve ever had. Beyond that, I’d strongly recommend the costilla (ribs), and barriga (soft pork belly). Pro tip from the owner himself: Dress your tacos with a little bit of BOTH salsas. Pro tip from me: Get there around noon on Wednesday or Thursday to avoid the lines.
Absolutely delicious tacos! The green point taqueria Ramirez are my favorite tacos in nyc, so I had to try carnitas Ramirez as well. I only tasted 3, but they were absolutely delicious. I told the girl to surprise me with the 3 choices and she nailed them. I don’t know which ones I had but I’m convinced they are all excellent. The one on the upper left of my picture was my favorite, it has a sort of crumble on it and I would definitely request that one again but I’m looking forward to coming back soon and trying all of them. Perfect for just a light bite or make a meal out of it and order 5, these tacos do not disappoint. Update: went back twice this past week. Still excellent, still no recommendations on what to order, it’s all tasty.
I would call this place all you can eat in terms of the pig 🐷. Huge fan on organs and collagens and I definitely wouldn’t miss out a chance to try this place with a friend who also has a huge crash on organs and fat. Ordered 12 tacos with almost everything except for the uterus (not in stock today) and the pork belly (caused we ordered fried belly). The braising liquid is the same so you are basically eating the different textures of each part of the pig. My Ranking for tasting most fatty and gelatinous to most lean and dry: Papada (7 jowl) Rabo (6 tail) Trompa (2 snout) (with a bit pig taint) Cuero (8 pig skin) = Oreja (9 pig ear) (more texture with bone) Buche (1 stomach) (more bouncy) = Cachete (10 cheek) Costilla (3 ribs) (bit cartilage , still soft) = Chamorro (4 shank) (bit tendon, still soft) Carnudo (12 fried pork belly) (crunchy but fatty) Lengue (11 tongue) Maciza (5 butt) (who knows butt can be so lean and tough?) My favorites are Rabo (tail), Cachete (cheek), and Lengue (tongue). I numbered the tacos so you can pair the parts with each taco on the numbered family picture. Have fun trying if you need up doing it. They have a self-serving topping section, and I really liked the lime and the red sauce. Also. Great selection of drinks, real coke etc. The cactus salad is super refreshing with tomato, onion, cilantro, fava beans, and Serrano. The cactus has a bit bouncy texture reminiscent of an aloe to me. I used this as topping instead. And kudos to the fried brain. The crunchy outer shell didn’t diminish any of that robust flavor of the tofu-textured mushy brain. My friend keeps wanting to get seconds. They call/shout your name when your food is ready, which can happen super fast. Seating is a bit limited, but people eat fast, plus they have a nice extension in the back for extra. Restroom situation is slow sometimes. This place will be an ideal place to get stuff to go for a party, which definitely will be in the near future.
There are a couple places in NYC that have Mexico City level taco, and this is one of them. OMG Run dont wait, if you like tacos, you have to go immediately. It's really that good. There's also a Ramirez in Williamsburg, also good with a different menu. This place offers a different meats from the pig for theit tacos. I recommend to check their website first to see the explanation first, it will make the ordering easier. I personally like to have a bit of fat and skin mixed with the meat, but you might not like it, so do a quick check. I personally really like the tongue, cheek, and chicharron, but honestly all the meats just melt in mouth. The freshly made tortilla on site is one of the best I have ever had. The taco of soft yet doesnt break apart when I took bites of the taco, did their job holding the meats together. On the side of the restaurant, you'll find a row of toppings for the tacos. This is how the taco restaurants are in Mexico. The re are green and red salsas, they are refreshing and tasty with a mild or medium sting. I like to make sure to get some avocado chunks from the green salsa for the leaner meats. The pickles red onion is crunchy and so juicy. There's also a bowl of marinated carrots with pickled jalapenos, I really lived this too. A bite of the taco, and a bit of the sour jalapeño, heaven. We tried the cactus salad, surprisingly really good and perfect with the tacos. Lightly sour from the cactus, the cactus pieces are mixed with cilantrol, fava beans, white onions. I recommend it. There are some front room bar and along window sill sittings, and a back room seating with tables and chairs. The restaurant isn't big, but the food comes out fast and people dont linger that long. Lastly I really appreciated the hand washing basin close to the exit of the restaurant. You'll find a giant pink soap in the sink that will wash away all the meat juicy from your hands, leaving just the savory flavors in your mouth as you leave.
As authentic as it gets!!! Came to visit this place tonight, while traveling in NYC. It felt like traveling to Mexico through an East Village tunnel. It’s all about the carnitas and the multiple variations of it. Masiza, Lengua, Surtido, Cuerito, etc. even chicharron to have as a snack or to add to your tacos. Truly authentic flavour. Staff is super friendly and quick. They have a good assortment of salsas, Mexican beer, and Boing juice. The ambience is another plus, they have great decoration, the Carta Blanca signs and metal tables, reminded me like those of a taqueria from a small town, they even have the old TV in the background, and Zote soap in the bathroom. All small details taken care of. It’s casual, small venue, yet it doesn’t feel crammed. Enough space to enjoy the dinner with no rush, and have a good conversation. Thank you guys!! It was very special. Gracias amigos!
If you’re serious about tacos, this is your spot! This place is easily one of the best taco spots in the city — same owners behind Taquería Ramirez in Greenpoint. Really authentic cuts of meat that you can’t normally find at other tacos spots. Some of the cuts can get a bit fatty and salty though but great flavor. Price to meat ratio is also very solid. I’ve tried the shank, cheek and tongue - all really good. They’re known for the surtida (everything) taco which I’ll have to go back and try. The consommé is pretty legit too so if it’s cold out and you feel like something soupy, I’d recommend it! Gets busy so go at random time to avoid lines
If you’re looking for authentic and flavorful tacos, Carnitas Ramirez is the spot! The meat is perfectly tender and seasoned to perfection, and the portions are generous. Their salsas and tortillas take everything to the next level. Whether you’re grabbing a quick bite or catering for a group, you can’t go wrong here. Definitely my go-to for a true experience!
There should be 6 stars!!!! One of the most authentic, Mexican tacos in all of New York. The service was very friendly and quick. The food will take you back to Mexico City. If you’d like pork from snout to tail, this is the place !!!! And the bonus if you grew up watching Mexican Novelas from the 80s, They show it on a small 15 inch TV very retro cool to see the old Novelas classic . I definitely will go back for more . Great work Geo and staff. See you soon. Alexander & Claudia from NJ .
The lady at the register was polite and happily recommended which cut of meat I should go with on my taco. Highly recommend the surtida, tortillas were fresh and salsa bar was a great touch. I have been to many taquerias in my life, but this place clears them all. Excited to return to try all the different tacos
An excellent, amazing little taco shop. It’s a great continuation of the tacqueria in Greenpoint, with several amazing tacos, amazing salsas. I loved the chamorro and Costilla, but everything was excellent. I wasn’t as big of a fan of the Gordita, which was a bit stodgy, lots of cartilage, sticky. It’s nice with some salsa, and I imagine on a day when it’s a bit cooler it’s very hearty and comforting. I’d get it again, but the tacos are the star. Absolutely essential to get a beer and use some spicy salsa. And for the love of God do not be that person that strains all the avocado out of the mild salsa to eat - a customer in front of me did this and it should be a lifetime ban from all Mexican restaurants.
Phenomenal. The tacos were amazing, tasted great and a bunch of selection to choose from. They had their own ‘sesadilla’ signature plate (wouldn’t get again but interesting concept). Everything else would for sure reorder. Need to go back and try it all. Can get crowded in evenings. Some seating in the back of restaurant or standing space out front.
UPDATE: Came back and tried some more pork cuts. All delicious. You really can't go wrong with any of your choices. Would recommend just blindly picking. ORIGINAL: Small but mighty spot. The tacos here are excellent. Tried the belly one and it was just amazing. Definitely coming back if I'm in the area.
Really unique spot of which there are probably only a handful of which in the United States. I was really impressed coming here by how busy it was and also particularly how Americans were ordering cuts of pork they have probably never seen on a menu before. The staff is really helpful in making choices and providing insights into what’s on the menu. On top of all of that, some the juiciest and most flavorful pork tacos I’ve ever had in my life. You probably won’t find tacos like this anywhere in the city (if so lmk)
Had the best experience here! Had heard such great things and was nervous it wouldn’t live up to the hype but it really did. Came at about 3pm on a Sunday, didn’t have to wait and was able to get a bench seat. There isn’t a lot of seating but the turnover is really quick because the food is so fast. Everything was delicious, I asked the staff to choose their favourites and there were no misses! Loved that you could add your own salsa & pickles - 10/10 experience.
This spot is so much better than the original in Greenpoint. There was no line when we went on a Thursday evening for dinner and we ordered right away. Our tacos were ready in about 3 minutes. They serve all different body parts of the pig. We were less adventurous and stuck with the classics- cheek, butt, belly, fried belly and tongue. The tongue was the standout, followed closely by the fried belly but I would 100% order any of those again. The tacos were perfect. There was plenty of seating so we were able to enjoy our tacos (and a little sink to wash your hands!!), and the service was so warm and efficient. 10/10 experience in every way.
Delicious, chill, not cheap but incredibly worthwhile and some of the only excellent tacos in NYC (besides Mariscos el Submarino). Legit The only thing that would be amazing is more space to sit inside or at least hang coats while eating quickly ! They just don't have the space but especially in the winter it kind of sucks Obviously worthwhile and a must try if you like pork and tacos though heheh
Try these guys for the first time on a Sunday evening and there was no line. We got there right before they closed so we had fewer selections of what we could choose from but all three tacos were still amazing in mind blowing. Super Porky and fatty all the way throughout slightly salty. And the spices that they used to cook, the pork is divine. We did get a tongue taco a cheek taco and I forget the third. The complementary sauces at the salsa bar are really good as well. The price to value ratio is amazing. Each taco is about five bucks and it’s well worth the price. All the tortillas are made in house and you can see them literally cooking up the whole pig right behind you. These guys are definitely gonna be in the top 10 taco spots in NYC. If not top 5 ! AMAZING EXPERIENCE
My best friend and I have been eyeing this place for a minute. We appreciate it when nothing goes to waste. This restaurant does not disappoint. Fresh slow roasted meat with simple decor like you are in Mexico enjoying an ice cold beer on a scolding hot day. Seating is minimal and gets crowded fast. The spicy is really spicy. Not speaking as just a native New Yorker , but an Indian who puts chilies on everything. We got a mixture of lean to fatty tacos. Great experience. Not too costly either.
Love this place! Paid $20 for 4 tacos. They’re generous with their portion of meat. 4 was more than enough for one person. I think 3 tacos would have been perfect. My favorite part was how authentic the entire establishment feels. Very down to earth. We came on a Saturday night and it was busy but not super crowded.
9 / 10 Authentic carnitas spot, we tried every single taco and all of them were great, torta was average but not bad at all, same with chicharrón. Salsas are okay, I wish they were spicier but they’re definitely flavorful. Quick and friendly service, great staff. Slightly more expensive than average taquerias but WAY better than most. Good music selection and theme. Will be back soon!
Hands down one of, if not, the best tacos in NYC. And also some of the best seasoned meat. Ya’ll better take note on seasoning - less is more. Food top down is can’t miss. Much love from Big Vic on this one. Big Vic Out.
The employees were super friendly and humming along to the radio, everything smelled delicious, and loved the different pig related decors. + Very thoughtful of them to have a sink right by the door for us to wash off our oily taco hands! It's dangerous how many options you have and we accidentally ate too much because we wanted to try everything lol We were lucky to get seats to the counter and we saw them chop and make the tacos right there as we ate. I probably broke my braces eating the chicharrons but 10/10 would visit again.
Ordering the different parts of the pig was fun; they all taste the same. The tortillas and sauces were ok. Would skip the nopal salad. I really like the chicharron, seems like it was air fried and then deep fried so it was not too oily.
Carnitas Ramirez is casual taco spot in Alphabet City--a sister restaurant of the insanely popular Taqueria Ramirez in Greenpoint. the taco menu is all about different cuts of pork from popular ones like shoulder to more off-the-beaten ones like ear, tongue, brain, etc. very clean down-to-Earth eatery--there are seats by the window inside and outside; sometimes sidewalk tables, and there is a small dining area in the back, inside. Carnitas Ramirez is a counter service taqueria: order and pick-up at the counter. there's no table service. it's first come, first served. no reservations. ordered 3 tacos. took about 5-10 minutes for my order to get called. my trio was 1) a lenga (tongue) topped with chicharron crumbles; 2) cachete (jowl); and 3) barriga (pork belly)--all of them come dressed with onions and cilantro. there's a small variety of add-ons like salsa roja, salsa verde, and variety of pickled vegetables like onions and such. take advantage of the salsas and pickled veggies...as the tacos would be pretty bare without them both visually and taste-wise. the lenga (tongue) is sliced into thin strips and are very tender. added chicharron crumbles to it for more texture and fatty flavor. throw in the pickled veggies and the salsa roja for flavor. cachete (pig cheeks) is tasty. nice juicy chewy soft meat that soaks up the salsa verde and really makes a savory taco. the barriga (pork belly) is pork belly and the fattiness of the pork belly is satisfying in the corn tortilla. if you're looking to make a meal of tacos--you'll need ~5 as they are on the smaller side. to me, Carnitas Ramirez is perfect for a quick bite of 1-2 tacos on a sleepy day or evening. the service is friendly and quick if you have's q's ask them. warning: be prepared for lines on prime time days like Friday, Saturday, & Sunday at meal times.
Solid tacos. Costilla (ribs) and cachette (cheeks) were delicious. The papada (jowl) tacos were a bit too fatty, which was probably how they were supposed to be, but it was not for us 😅. Their website has descriptions of all the menu options, so if you are not familiar with the different parts of a pork, it is probably a good idea to take a look before hand. Next time I come I will definitely give the chamorro (shank) and maciza (pork butt close to the shoulder) a try. The restaurant is cute but small, 4 seats only.
The food was good, and I love the concept of choosing from different cuts. The meats were on the dryer side that I expected. Beef tacos can also hold one's attention for so long. The cognitive dissonance for me is that the food is clearly intended as a quick snack, but the place draws such higher crowds, that the experience of eating beef taco doesn't meet the expectations generated by the wait.
Carnitas good, salsas good, service good, ambiance like in a theater set of Mexico. Yet somehow, like all Mexican food in NYC, it disappoints. I can't quite figure out why. Maybe they try too hard or it's the gentrifying prices... To clean perhaps? A mystery.
Potentially just not my style of food. Very meat heavy - it’s basically just corn tortilla with misc pig components. Some of them were really slimey lol. Super fatty. They have a build your own salsa bar. It’s not terribly comprehensive but it was good. I had a lingering flavor in my mouth all day. The line is kinda slow / long It’s a unique experience, but was not a hit for me
I had a 40 minute commute back home so the food cooled down a little. But it was great, loved that they use a variety of the pork and seems to waste less. Tacos were good but nothing crazy. You don’t have that fruity sweet citrus taste like you would get from carnitas but it was a solid taco. Will have to go back and dine in. Loved the self serve condiment section, pickled onions, jalapeños and carrots 🤩🤩
I was super excited about Carnitas Ramirez!! It looks super authentic, like an actual taqueria in Mexico. That faded out right away lmaoooo One word, disappointing. At beeeeest!!! Like I’m being generous with my description. We order, the girl at the resister was EATING while taking our order!!! We had 2 maciza, 2 maciza con cuernito & 1 costilla. Food came out super quick. Sauces were not spicy at all, carnitas were cold (how the hell are they cold if they live under the lamp?!?), the tortillas were stale!!! Like really?! really?!?? And to top it off, when I left I had to get into a random bar because I got sick. This is definitely not Ramirez quality. Absolutely not.
This place was extremely disappointing. Service was non existent. We were the only people ordering and yet we stood there for 15 minutes as the staff chatted instead of preparing our crazy order of 4 tacos. The meat was over salted, the tortillas were stale, the portion was tiny and the cherry on top, our total was $30. $30 for 4 tacos and two Topo Chico’s. Yet another overhyped, overpriced joint that’s barely mid.
