Opinions de Chalong Southern Thai New York
Chalong brings the ไฟ!!... This is the real deal, and is the best Thai I’ve had outside of Phuket!! I started with the Lumpu Salad, built around pristine scallops that were bright, citrusy, and layered with that classic Thai balance of heat, acidity, and herbs. The scallops were incredibly fresh and the dish had a punchy vibrance that woke up the palate immediately. Next up were the Baerng Golae shrimp tacos…juicy shrimp with deep, smoky southern Thai spices wrapped in a soft bite that delivered savory, slightly sweet, and the right amount of heat. The steamed fish was beautifully executed. Clean, delicate, and perfectly cooked, with aromatic herbs and broth that made every bite feel light but deeply flavorful. To finish, the mango sticky rice hit the spot..nothing standout about this dish but after getting hit with all that flavor, I didn’t mind. I washed all that down with a Surat Thani “After School” cocktail which was dangerously easy to drink so I just sipped on it rather than drank! Across the board, the taste profiles at Chalong were dialed in and dialed up! The service, perfect! It’s the kind of spot that reminds you how exciting Thai food can be when the kitchen leans all the way into its roots. A seriously impressive meal.
ทางร้านมี 10 ดาวให้กดมั้ยคะ❤️ Every time I visit NYC, having Thai food is a must. This trip, a fellow Thai recommended that I try Chalong, especially because they specialize in Southern Thai cuisine and as someone from the South of Thailand, I had to see if it lived up to the hype. Let me just say: 200/10. The flavors were absolutely incredible, it truly felt like I was enjoying a proper, high-quality meal back home in Thailand. I went with my husband, and we both agreed that every dish was beautifully executed and packed with authentic flavor. You can really taste the freshness of the ingredients. What impressed me even more is that their curry pastes are made fresh in-house, not from a can. That makes such a difference, and you can tell they take pride in doing things the right way. The service was also outstanding. Mr. Mung Korn was our server , so polite, attentive, and genuinely warm. He made the whole experience even more memorable. I sincerely hope Chalong opens a location in DC one day! Until then, I will definitely be back whenever I’m in NYC. Highly, highly recommend. ขอบคุณทุกคนในร้านมากๆนะคะ รบกวนฝากบอกเจ้าของร้านมาเปิดที่ DC ได้มั้ยคะ 😝❤️
I’ve been ordering delivery from this place for a long time, but this was my first time actually visiting the restaurant. We went on a busy Friday night and had a reservation for four. The restaurant was quite packed, and I noticed their Michelin 2025 award displayed on the wall, which was impressive. We were offered a 3–4 person combo menu that included three appetizers, four main dishes, and one dessert, and everything was delicious. The flavors were great and the portions were generous overall. The only small issue was that one of the appetizers came with only three pieces, even though there were four of us at the table. It would have been nice if the restaurant provided four pieces so everyone could enjoy it equally. We also ordered four cocktails, but unfortunately two of them didn’t taste great and were a bit too strong. On the positive side, the service was excellent. Our server consistently checked on us and kept our water glasses filled throughout the meal. Overall, we had a great time and enjoyed the food. I’d definitely come back again.
We happened to stumble upon this in an EATER article and noted for a recent trip. We popped in on a Friday for a late lunch. Though we got a table, it was still BUSY for 2pm. The staff were SO FRIENDLY and very welcoming. There were some delicious-looking lunch specials that were great value; and if you ordered a lunch special or an entree you received a complementary order of chicken wings. All of the drinks looked and sounded great (great selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic sippers); my friend and I ordered a pirate drink that was smoky and well balanced. SPOILER: all the food we had was AGGRESSIVELY DELICIOUS and I will be thinking about each dish fondly, until my next visit. We tried the pomelo salad and it was a flavour explosion of sweet, salty, spicy, herbaceous and smoky. The smoked and fried fish was different and delicious and went so well with the pomelo. We also enjoyed the pillowy peanut coconut dumplings. The flavour was savoury, rich and comforting while the mouthfeel of the rice dumpling was like a cloud. The southern pad Thai was delightful with a true tomato taste (not ketchupy… though there’s a time and a place so no shade!) made richer with a coconut creaminess and plump shrimp. Wok fried greens were also excellent and a well-selected side. This was an unplanned stop that turned out to be one of the highlights of our weekend in NYC. I would highly recommend to anyone that loves Thai; while it’s one of my favourite cuisines, we were able to find familiar favourites done well, and new iterations of dishes and flavour combinations we hadn’t tried, and discoveries like that in restaurants today are sometimes hard to come by. We were absolutely delighted and I cannot wait to return.
I have a really good time at Chalong As I been there 2 times for lunch and dinner Recently I been there last week for lunch on Tuesday The food is really tasty , flavorful and rich Can’t explain more cuz you should come try!!! I try the set menu recommended for3-4 people That amazing The server “Mangkorn” was fantastic, friendly and give me a really good advice for food detail also co-server on that day really impressed me and my friends Regarding the dinner I had on a visit in November and sat alone at the bar. The server I forget the name also made me feel not alone while I’m eating their. This is the place you should not miss
This place is unique. Their flavors are vibrant and the atmosphere of the place is beautiful even if it’s really crowded. I suggest a reservation. What I got: 1) Crab Curry 10/10 2) Mee Pum Riang 9/10 3) Tom Sompla 8/10 4) Dessert: Black Stick Rice w/ Lonyan 8/10 The crab curry is a must get. Seems so simple but the flavors are bursting. Does have spice. I can’t describe it, just try it for yourself. The Mee Pum Riang is smooth and delicious. Wonderful combination of sweet and savory. Shrimp is unbelievably fresh. The Tom Sompla is unique. I believe some will not like it and some will. It is on the fishier side, and very sour. I like sour. But the fish is really good quality and VERY buttery. The stick rice was not too sweet at all, it’s actually more mild. But the texture is great and the flavor really unique. I liked it, simple but delicious. Overall 9/10. Would come back to try more.
We went here on a busy Saturday night for 6 people and we ordered the set menu. The food is amazing! I really love the scallop salad and shrimp taco for the appetizers. The main dish was crazy good as well, especially the squid ink fried rice and the crab curry! The only thing is that this place is pretty loud so it’s hard to hear the conversation, but other than that we definitely would come back again! And also thank you for our friendly server Thaw K. for being attentive and making sure everything was great for our table.
Service was amazing! I got the crab curry which was delicious and the crabmeat was the largest pieces I’ve ever had and the crabmeat portion was generous. I also got the scallop salad. Scallop was delicious but the seafood sauce that it comes with was a bit on the salty end. Great dining experience.
There are so many Thai restaurants in New York but this place really does not mess around. Great level of spice (aka you will sweat) and the crab curry is probably the best I’ve had in the city. There’s only half a soft shell crab as a topping which was at first a bit disappointing but there’s a bunch of white crab meat inside and the curry itself tastes very rich with crab roe. Mind blowing. Lastly tried their pad kee mao which is seafood based. The shrimp was delicious and tasted smoky like lobster, and the seafood was cooked to truly perfection. Great service, great decor and atmosphere. Not the best for big parties but perfect for date night just make sure to get a reservation. Definitely adding this place as a favorite.
Really solid spot for authentic Southern Thai food in Hell’s Kitchen. Sea at the bar was great — super knowledgeable about Southern Thai cuisine and gave really good recommendations without overdoing it. We had the Pla Tod (fried fish) which was super fresh and crispy, ink squid fried rice that was flavorful and satisfying, and a scallop salad that was fresh and well balanced. Everything tasted legit and thoughtfully made. Definitely a place I’d come back to if you’re craving real Thai food in the area!
Food was really good. I am told Baerng Golae and Crab Curry were the two dishes that brought them the Michelin recognition. They were indeed great along with the Thai Iced Tea ice cream dessert. Green Curry Brisket, Southern Style Pad Thai, and Jumbo Shrimp Fried Rice were also good. But I liked the curry dishes the most. Could be more kid friendly by offering simpler dishes for them.
I have a theory of Michelin just got one or two stars are amazing taste This is the one super amazing nice insane place I am so sorry I had a stereotype about Thai restaurants cocktail Cocktail quality is crazy. Amazing balance no doubt Pad Thai look so pretty and amazing taste spicy pork with shrimp yes it’s spciy thai pepper is crazy spicy but somehow they make it so delicious and could not stop added one more rice Green curry One of my fav green curry and it’s spicy that why I so love this one beef short rib in it and soft and coconut creamy spicy curry is insane Last final damn good dessert Boba is amazing so chewy and fresh Iced tea ice cream is one of my best ice cream in top 10 in my life whatever you try no fail Just so busy and have to wait That means it’s delicious
It’s safe to say Chalong lives up to the hype! I made a reservation for 7 p.m. on a Sunday, and the restaurant was completely full I ordered two dishes - the Pomelo Salad and the Chicken Noodles - and both were outstanding. The pomelo salad was extremely fresh and light, while the chicken noodles were beautifully cooked. The noodles were soft (not soggy) and seasoned perfectly. The service was excellent; the food came out quickly, and the waiters were very attentive, constantly checking in and refilling water. A must-eat Thai spot in NYC! ⭐️
this is probably the best Thai place I’ve been to in NYC (and I’m Thai). Their food is so authentic AND MORE. Their cocktails are insanely creative and everything just hits right - even the beef fried rice. The afterschool (suratthani butterfly pea cocktail) was super nice. Would be ordering the at again next time. We were a family of four with no reservations - but we showed up at right at opening on a Thursday and was immediately seated. Service is great, food is great, well done, Chalong!
THE BEST AUTHENTIC SOUTHERN THAI FOOD I've had ever since I left Thailand. This transported me back to when I was living in Thailand and I LOVE how they unapologetically stay true to the southern flavors without substitution or compromising on spice. I had Sator Goong that was truly Thai level spice and taste just like I was in southern Thailand again. The cocktails are super creative and complex, nothing like the basic cocktails you find at most places. The service was amazing too. And the ambiance was hip and it was super popular and packed even for a Tuesday night. 10/10 highly recommend Chalong if you want truly authentic southern Thai food.
I've never given a restaurant a 5 star review before. Chalong, you're my first! I've been to Thailand at least 5 times and I can say that Chalong’s Thai food quality is just as good as the mother land! We had these 3 dishes: goat curry with roti, squid ink fried rice and southern style pad thai. All 3 dishes were excellent, very flavorful, shrimp were fresh, some of the best stewed goat I've ever had, well cooked but not elastic, tender, buttery, slightly flaky roti dipped in curry was just divine. The drinks were equally good too: Thai ice tea and Thai tea with lychee puree. Both great! A bit on the sweeter side but great flavor and authentic. Environment was nicely decorated, greater and friendly waiter, when we were slightly concerned about the spice level, he was so nice to go to the kitchen to bring out a little sauce plate let us try a little sample of the curry to determine the spice level. The only downside is the tight seat space, we could barely make it out of our seats. Maybe that's just New York? Will definitely return to try more dishes!
Chalong is one of the best authentic Thai restaurants I have ever had. The only other places I have had top Thai is in Brussels and Atlanta. Had the ink squid rice with squid, fish and crab-Wow! Had the shrimp tacos and dumpling appetizers-Whoa!! And the superstar was the Branzino....crispy crispy and flavorful skin with a light sweet sauce that was perfect!!!!! Nothing made it back to our hotel as a leftover. The drinks were also delicious...try the elegant and smooth twist on a Manhattan...Yes!!
I had an amazing meal at Chalong – Southern Thai Food! I ordered the Baearng Gorlae, the fried fish (Pla Tod), and the Picanha Kra Praw, and every dish was bursting with authentic Southern Thai flavors—bold, aromatic, and incredibly satisfying. A special shout-out to Alice, our server, who was incredibly kind and attentive throughout the meal. For drinks, I tried the Muang Bao (mezcal-based) and the Nham Hom (white rum, mezcal, coconut). Both cocktails were unique, fragrant, and perfectly balanced—great companions to the spicy and savory dishes. Overall, it was a fantastic experience with delicious food, great drinks, and warm service. I’ll definitely be back!
I’ve been wanting to visit Chalong for a while and a bit sad that I didn’t come sooner since my experience was great. First off, the interior is beautifully done! The vibe inside is cozy and authentic. The food is absolutely delicious and i didn’t have one bad dish. I’d definitely say to come with a large group to try multiple dishes. I loved both the goat and crab curry, those were the show stoppers for me. The pork belly dish was also good but a bit on the fattier side. The appetizers were okay so I’d skip them and go directly for the entrees since that’s what stood out the most, they’re still good however. Love that they give chicken wings on the house. I’d hands down come back to Chalong and looking forward to my next visit so I can try out a few more options.
If ever in New York and your craving Thai food….. this is the best spot! This place brings atmosphere, quality, cleanliness, best service, and hands down FOOD taste delicious! If you like spicy food the Thai curry, and Tom Sompla is it!!! I have no complaints!! Drinks where made with their own logo and a amazing designs.very creative!! Ponce De Leon was our server, his service was incredible!! I do recommend , reservations be made prior!
They have up the thai food game in the neighbourhood !! !! From cocktails to appetisers to main dishes just pack with flavours and authenticity. My fav were the scallop salad and coconut crisp taco. The rest were equally good. Tables are rather small and packed but still able to have decent conversation even tho the room is little noisy. Another great option for pre-show dinner if you can get a reservation because food comes out fast and they keep it moving.
My husband and I have dined here twice so far and both times we were met with exceptional food and service. Service is fast and precise, the food is full of flavor. Bill, our waiter was very helpful in helping me decide on my main course. We had the crab curry and the crispy duck in this lusciously delicious sauce. Portions are a good size. The shrimp “taco” is scrumptious. I can’t wait to go back!
I’m from Southern Thailand, and this is truly one of the best Thai cuisines in New York! The food was delicious and authentic - full of real Southern Thai flavor. The service was excellent, and J, our server, was very friendly and nice. Great atmosphere too. Highly recommend! Don’t miss the Thai ice milk tea!!
#girltime #timesquare #hellkitchen #manhattan #nyc The best Thai food in Manhattan, NYC even better than many restaurants in Thailand .Can’t believe I said this but it’s true. Please check it out and you won’t be disappointed. Big applause to Chef NES . Her cooking style is meticulous and her food is so delicious because she made all her curry paste from the scratch and use fresh ingredients which made her food so outstanding. She is truly deserved Michelin star. The staffs are polite and friendly. The restaurant decor is both modern and authentic to its name I know because I live in Phuket.
The crab curry was phenomenal. Very flavorful and plenty of crab meat. There was a soft shell crab in there that was great too. Also got the beef fried rice Khao Pad Mun Neur was really great too. Beef was flavorful and lots of fried garlic and shallots on the top. We got some complimentary chicken wings during lunch time which was also very great. Very unique Thai food and would go again

I recently visited Chalong NYC for dinner with friends, and overall it was a solid experience worth sharing! Located in the heart of Hell’s Kitchen, this Thai restaurant blends modern Southern Thai flavors with a lively atmosphere that’s perfect for dinners out, pre-theater meals, or casual nights with friends. The space feels warm and welcoming, with thoughtful décor and an inviting vibe that made our group feel comfortable right away. The restaurant tends to be popular, so reservations are definitely recommended — it can get busy, especially on weekend evenings. The service throughout the night was friendly and attentive; staff were happy to explain the menu and adjust spice levels based on our preferences. We tried several standout dishes that left a great impression. The Green Curry Brisket was rich and flavorful, perfectly tender and aromatic. The Mee Pum Riang had a unique, savory taste that paired beautifully with the noodles. Khao Pad Mun Goong was comforting and well-seasoned, while the special Baerng Golae offered a bold, complex flavor that really showcased Southern Thai cuisine. Each dish was generous in portion and carefully prepared, making the meal very satisfying. The vibe inside Chalong is energetic and vibrant — lively enough for a fun night out, though it might be a bit loud if you’re hoping for a quiet, intimate dinner. In summary, Chalong NYC offers flavorful, well-prepared Southern Thai food, attentive service, and a buzz-worthy setting. While some dishes might feel a bit pricey for what you get, the quality and creativity make it worth trying. I would definitely go back to explore more of the menu and enjoy another night of great Thai flavors!
Visited Chalong and overall it was decent but not particularly memorable. The squid ink seafood fried rice was flavorful and had squid and crab that tasted fairly fresh, with balanced seasoning. The curry shrimp taco was interesting — the shell was more like a crispy egg roll wrapper, almost snack-like, and the shrimp itself was well seasoned. The curry lamb was also good and not overly soft or stewed down, which I appreciated for the texture. That said, portions felt small for the price, and while everything tasted fine, nothing really stood out. Considering the pricing, the overall experience felt a bit underwhelming.
Great spot for a date night. We made a reservation but we could have walked in at opening as the line wasn't too long. Service was quick and attentive. Food was good to great. The wings were some of the best we've had anywhere. The curry was great but felt like it needed more meat. Ink fried rice was a bit underwhelming but still okay. The tea ice cream was an amazing way to end the meal. Can't wait to come back next time we have a Broadway show.
