Opinions de Crown Shy New York
Approachable fine dining exceeds all expectations. Every aspect of the experience is top-notch, from the impeccable service to the warm and welcoming atmosphere. Paul at the bar is incredibly knowledgeable and helpful, and his cocktails are beautifully balanced. We had a delightful conversation about gin and mezcal, and his expertise was evident. Our table had a lovely view of the well-appointed and choreographed kitchen, adding to the overall ambiance. The service was impeccable, and there was no need to rush. We were given ample time to enjoy the food and the highest level of service. When we made our selections, our server, Noelle, described each menu item in beautiful detail. The scallops in blood orange and romaine with green goddess were a standout dish, followed by bucatini for me and monkfish for him. The sommelier, Allie, paired the perfect wine for each course, enhancing the dining experience. The attention to detail and the overall experience for laid back fine dining were truly exceptional. It was an honor to be their guest, and I highly recommend their offerings to anyone seeking a truly memorable dining experience. Don’t skip dessert Thank you Silvia for attention to detail.
I really enjoyed everything from Crown Shy- the vibe, the food, the staff, the chanting from the kitchen! We shared everything, our server recommended 5-6 plates for the us to share would be good, depending on how hungry you we were. They started us with complimentary bread for the table which was truly so good, took everything inside me not to keep eating it to save room for our orders to come! We ordered 2 cold starters the Spicy Tuna, Pineapple, Nori Chip and the Snapper Crudo, Persimmon, Leche de Tigre. They both have a nice kick and were delicious. The Spicy Tuna, Pineapple, Nori Chip was fun to eat, different textures and flavors in each bite. I could not get enough of the Snapper Crudo, Persimmon, Leche de Tigre -it was my favorite cold starter! We also ordered a hot starter, The Gruyère Fritters, Chili, Lime. Sooo good, they were like savory churros. I forgot what our server said was inside exactly aside from the obvious, but the inside also taste like there was potato inside. Our entrees were the Ricotta Gnocchi, Chanterelles, Vin Jaune and the Pork Katsu, Curry Béarnaise, Gooseberry. They were both delicious. The Pork Katsu is a pretty big portion. In the end we were pretty full but could not resist in getting the Sticky Toffee Pudding for Two, Pecans, Apple Sorbet for dessert. I forgot to take a photo, but it was really good. OHHH almost forgot the drinks, we had the 2 Mezcal drinks which were truly great, The Flightplan and Oro Maya. Honestly, our order was the best order and wouldn't have done anything differently. Another thing to note that I appreciated was that we were not rushed, even with it being busy for a Wed night.
This place is great. It earned a Michelin Star back in 2024 but the food is still wonderful. High class fine dining dishes are served and the kitchen is open to the dining room which is very nice. The Hostess are a bit slow to great or take care of you but apart from that, the place is very nice. We tried the Green Goodess Salad, the Beef Carpaccio, the Monk Fish Au Povre and the Gnocchi Pasta which were all superb! If you are in the neighborbood, I would reccomend this place for a nice light meal!
I was wowed by the food, especially the addictive pistachio pesto bread. The service was impeccable. We came for restaurant week, but we will absolutely be back for regular dining. With so many options in the city, it is rare for a place to earn a repeat visit, but this has officially become a must-return spot for us.
Bread before the meal: 🟡 pull apart bread The toast is savory, soft but dry in texture. Topped with crushed pistachios and goat cheese. Appetizers: 🟢 Snapper Crudo $23 The raw snapper slices were tender and had no fishy taste. The seasoning was tangy, with diced persimmon, pumpkin seeds, and a small amount of chopped red bell pepper. 🟢 Scallop Ceviche $22 A small dish. The scallops are tender and not fishy, with mango and crispy green papaya. The green sauce is sour and spicy, whetting the appetite. 🟢 Octopus a la Plancha $33 Savory, the octopus has a charcoal-grilled aroma. The octopus tentacles are not tough, the rice cakes are soft and chewy, and there are crispy summer squash and zucchini. 🔴 Bucatini, Lamb Merguez $32 The pasta was undercooked and very hard. The mussels were delicious and not fishy. Just the right amount of saltiness. 🟡 Charred Carrots, Razor Clams $24 The carrots weren't anything special, garnished with scallops, and the coconut curry made the carrots sweeter and more flavorful. Main Courses: 🟡 BBQ Eggplant $36 Okay, but not the same as the garlic and chili grilled eggplant in China. 🟢 Roasted Short Rib $105 The beef slices were incredibly tender! The most impressive dish. The beef had a pepper and cumin flavor with a hint of salt. The salty and sour green sauce complemented the saltiness perfectly. The fried potatoes were soft, and there were large, chewy corn kernels, sprinkled with sweet paprika, which wasn't spicy but enhanced the sweetness of the potatoes and corn. 🟢 Pork Katsu, Curry Béarnaise $48 The best value dish. The pork cutlet was a large, thick piece with the bone still attached. The breading was thin. The pork was tender and not dry. Topped with plenty of Curry Béarnaise/currynaise sauce, which was mixed with curry powder, very fragrant, slightly spicy, and cut through the richness. I liked this sauce. The only drawback was that the pork had a slight gamey taste. 🟢 Pan Seared Cod $46 The cod was tender and flaky. It came with grilled enoki mushrooms and three pieces of porcini mushrooms. The seasoning was surprisingly good, a mix of salty, sour, and cumin flavors, reminiscent of grilled enoki mushrooms dipped in vinegar. 🟡 Grilled Citrus-Marinated Chicken $45 This dish looked mild, but it actually used very spicy Habanero peppers. A whole chicken breast and thigh meat, deboned and with the skin on, were marinated for a day in orange, lemon, and lime juice to tenderize the meat. The dipping sauce contained crushed Habanero peppers. The chef said this dish and another main course, the grilled short ribs, would not be removed from the menu. Dessert: 🟢 Satsuma Orange Ice Cream $17 The orange ice cream was smooth and light, without ice crystals. Sweet and sour, delicious. It contained small pieces of honeycomb. The three pieces of roasted honeycomb were hard and sticky. Topped with melted toasted marshmallows. 🔴 Sticky Toffee Pudding for Two $28 A British dessert. It's too sweet and has a dense cake-like texture rather than a pudding texture. The green apple sorbet is sour. They don't go well together. The open kitchen is completely free of cooking smells. You can even hear the head chef giving orders and the other chefs responding in unison. Summary: This new American restaurant uses ingredients and techniques from different countries, combining them with French sauces for seasoning. The savory flavors are perfectly balanced, and the aromas are excellent, whether from spices or through roasting. The meats are tender, and the appetizers feature a good balance of soft and crispy textures.
Three visits in, and Crown Shy just keeps getting better. It’s rare to find a menu where every single plate is a winner, but they nail the execution every time. The secret sauce? An incredible hospitality team. Huge thanks to Gordon, Andrew, and Cem for the top-tier service. If you haven't been yet, you’re missing out!"
This was one of those restaurants that leaves a great impression without trying too hard. The atmosphere was welcoming, comfortable, and easy to enjoy. Service was attentive and friendly, which always goes a long way in making a visit memorable. Traveling constantly as a streamer means I see a lot of places, and this one stood out. Crown Shy delivers a polished yet welcoming dining experience. Creative, beautifully plated dishes with bold flavors make every course memorable. The modern space and attentive service elevate the meal, making it a standout spot for a special night out in NYC.
Great service food and atmosphere. Had the 3 course restaurant week menu. The first course of beef carpaccio/sates was visually not great but tasted absolutely amazing. The flavor is some of the best for the type of raw beef taste you may look for. The entree of jerk octopus was very unique fresh and nicely flavored. The sticky toffee pudding is legendary and one of the best desserts I’ve ever had. Not a bad price either. Good portions. Great service. Probably the easiest Michelin star to eat at in that it had a laid back not pretentious vibe. Highly highly recommend whether it’s your first or tenth Michelin experience
Laid back atmosphere with delicious bites. Bookended by the pistachio pesto bread and the satsuma, the restaurant week menu was a nice sampling of their offerings. The ricotta gnocchi and bucatini were particularly satisfying, but it's worth going back for just a glass of wine and the carrot cake.
For my inaugural food review, I am posting about my experience at Crown Shy (1/20/26) in NYC. Typically overall scores of 4.5+ will be in the 2 or 3 Michelin star category and 4.2-4.4 will be of the 1 star caliber. Ambiance: 4.5/5.0 Crown Shy offers a sleek, modern, and fun feel with its high ceilings and kitchen facing dining room (you will hear the kitchen staff communicating which was a cool experience). Service: 4.2/5.0 This part for me was a little difficult as my server was extremely friendly, allowing me to feel very welcome. However, the service was a little slow in the beginning even though there were many open tables around me. Food: 4.1/5.0 Pistachio bread service: Soft, fluffy, and incredible harmony between the cheese, pistachio filling and butter White bean hummus: The hummus is on the creamier side which isn't my favorite but the flavors were there. The pine nut adds balance and texture while the nduja is not over powering. Gnocchi: Pillows of cheesiness and deliciousness. However, this dish is on the heavier side so I recommend ordering something else to balance it when thinking about what to order. The Parmesan crisps add a great texture balance to a very soft dish. Pork Katsu: After eating katsu in Japan and Hawaii, I rarely find a katsu that I enjoy in other areas. This is a very strong Katsu with great flavors and balanced acidity (loved the gooseberries and slaw). Overall Score (average of the categories with food counted twice): 4.23/5.0 Crown Shy was a thoroughly enjoyable experience and the restaurant, in my opinion, is deserving of its star. There isn't the pressure of a pre fixe format and the liveliness of the restaurant is a good change of pace from your classic fine dining Michelin star restaurants. The food may not knock your socks off, but you will leave full and happy.
Been a couple times and will be back for more. New Year’s Eve menu had all the greatest hits. What a great place to ring in 2026 and mourn the death of the Metrocard. I tell my friends the bread alone is worth the price of admission. It’s my favorite bread from all the fine dining establishments in NYC. Mango Togarashi mocktail is excellent. I also love the desserts from the Crown Shy team puts together - they always leave a good impression to close the meal out. The Satsuma ice cream in particular is my favorite. The food is filling and well priced considering the caliber and service. Skilled and friendly bar team.
An interesting place with an unusual presentation of food. The pistachio bread they brought as a compliment was very airy and practically melted in my mouth , and the pork katsu was also good. But I liked the service even more. Our server was Noel, and she described every dish on the menu with such enthusiasm that I wanted to try them all at once. Their signature chicken was a bit dry, but it was later removed from the bill .
This might be one of my longest reviews, but a place like Crown Shy deserves it. From the moment I sat down until the last bite of dessert, the entire experience felt thoughtful, warm, and brilliantly executed. The restaurant delivers not just great food but an atmosphere that stays with you long after you leave. A huge part of that is thanks to Chef Jassimran Singh, whose influence is beautifully woven into every dish. I started with the shrimp cocktail, and this dish alone set the bar incredibly high. The first bite immediately reminded me of Punjabi mango pickle — that tangy, spiced flavor from old village-style achaar. It’s rare to find something in a modern Manhattan restaurant that brings back such nostalgia. It wasn’t overpowering or intentional “fusion”; it was a subtle echo of flavors that feel deeply familiar to anyone who grew up around Indian food. The pear with walnuts was another appetizer that impressed me with its simplicity and elegance. Fresh, balanced, and beautifully plated, it showed that even minimal ingredients can feel elevated when done right. For entrées, I tried the grilled citrus-marinated chicken, and it was outstanding. Juicy, perfectly charred, and seasoned with a brightness that makes every bite enjoyable, it’s one of those dishes you think about long after the meal. The chicken kofta with rice was equally memorable — tender, flavorful, and comforting. It had that unmistakable warmth of Indian home cooking, but executed with modern finesse. Both dishes captured what Crown Shy does so well: familiar flavors refined without losing their soul. Dessert was the biggest surprise of the night. The Sticky Rice with Toasted Coconut and Mango Sorbet, which I ordered to go, brought back childhood memories instantly. Something about the combination reminded me of those little ice cream cups with wooden spoons we all grew up eating. It was nostalgic, refreshing, and perfectly balanced — a must-try. What makes Crown Shy truly special is how Indian influences are subtly present throughout the menu, not in an obvious or forced way, but in gentle notes of seasoning, aroma, and warmth. It gives the cuisine a unique identity. Beyond the food, I was fascinated by the energy of the kitchen staff. Their coordination, responsiveness, and the way they acknowledge the chef’s commands almost feel musical — a rhythm you only see in tightly run, passionate kitchens. It speaks volumes about leadership and teamwork. The wine list is extensive and well curated, offering something for every type of wine drinker. And being located right in the heart of Wall Street adds a certain magic to the experience; stepping out into the historic streets after such a memorable meal feels truly special. Overall, Crown Shy delivers exceptional food with heart, craft, and authenticity. I left with deep appreciation for Chef Jassimran Singh — an incredibly talented, humble, and inspiring chef whose food tells a story. This restaurant is an experience I won’t forget.
Beautiful experience! Delicious food, nice place and GREAT service! Silvia Sánchez made sure we had the best birthday night! Absolutely impecable everything! The plates Silvia recommended were exquisite (gnocchi, tuna, ceviche, lamb) WOWW! We tried the whole dessert menu! Tres leches and the green apple sorbet were our favorites! ✨✨✨ I’ll definitely be back !
I came to know this place from a YouTube video by their chef about how to prepare one of their signature dishes (marinated chicken). Up front, this is an expensive destination but at the end of the evening, I felt it was money well spent. To contextualize our spend per person, we had two sparkling water bottles and five wines by the glass; not going that route would cut the bill to ~$100 per person. There was no one standout dish as *everything * was exceptional. Pictured are the complimentary pistachio pesto bread, hummus/crudités (they brought extra) and Green Goddess salad, Signature marinated chicken, carrots in coconut curry (veg version w/o clams), Pork Katsu and toffee pudding for two (amazing!!!). Service was also top notch.
had a great meal from start to finish in a beautiful restaurant. the pull apart bread started the meal on a high note and it just kept getting better from there. menu highlights: spicy tuna (amazing one bite, wish i could of had another), red snapper (amazing texture and flavor), beef kibbeh nayeh (just wow), and the ricotta gnocchi (my new favorite gnocchi). i am excited for the next time i get to come back here again for a meal.
Easily one of the best—if not the best—restaurants I’ve been to in New York City. Absolutely blew me away. I came in with pretty low expectations, thinking maybe the initial hype had died down, but Crown Shy completely exceeded them. Reservations are much easier to get now than they used to be, which makes it the perfect time to visit. The service is sharp, the atmosphere is relaxed but elevated, and the food is phenomenal. Highlights: 1) Ricotta Gnocchi with Morels & Vin Jaune — absolute perfection. Pillow-soft, creamy, and rich without being heavy. I could have eaten two bowls. 2) White Bean Hummus with ’Nduja & Pine Nuts — surprisingly one of my favorite dishes of the night. The depth of flavor and that spicy-smoky kick from the ’nduja were unforgettable. 3) Bucatini with Lamb Merguez & Mussels — bold and savory, with just the right spice and texture balance. 4) Gruyère Fritters with Chili & Lime — fun, snackable, and way better than they sound. Almost addictive. The signature chicken (the “Crown Shy Chicken”) was solid but didn’t quite reach the same level as everything else—it’s good, but not the must-order dish here. Dessert: We went for the roasted banana dessert, which was great, but I’ll be back for their famous sticky toffee pudding—everyone raves about it.
Michelin one star Table, plates, wine glasses good quality 1. bread is so warm and fluffy and they put the little big salt on the better and it’s perfect savory with can feel crunch of salt 2. Pork cutlet is so perfect cooked as medium well and no smell of pork and sweet sour sou sauce salad on the top 3. Amazing gnocchi is amazing cuz they put ricotta cheese in it. Little bit cheesy but so worth it to try. Cheese taste so amazing Its must go place
This was my first experience with a Michelin starred restaurant and I was not disappointed. Every dish was better than the previous one. The absolute highlights were the bread to start, the Braised short rib, and the desserts. Our server was so knowledgeable about the food and made some excellent recommendations along the way. Also the dessert was the best we had ever had. I am so glad we got to experience Crown Shy and we will be back.
I had an incredible dinner experience at Crown Shy! The food was absolutely outstanding—every dish was packed with flavor and beautifully presented. The service was just as impressive. A small issue came up during the evening, but Pablo Garcia, the dining room manager, handled it with such professionalism and care that it made the experience even more memorable. From start to finish, everything was top-notch. I’ll definitely be back soon and will recommend this spot to friends and colleagues—especially for special dinners or business meetings. Truly unforgettable!

Our experience at Crown Shy was generally very good. Below are the key highlights and lowlights of our visit. Highlights • The Gnocchi is a Must-Try: Without a doubt, the absolute best part was the gnocchi. If you dine here, you must order them, they were truly exquisite. • Exceptional Bread: The initial pistachio bread served was spectacular. • Wonderful Ambiance: The overall setting and ambiance of the restaurant were really well done. • Outstanding Service: I also want to highlight the excellent attention from the entire staff. Lowlights • Late Seating: Despite having a 9:30 PM reservation, we were seated about 20 minutes late. The waiting area isn't the best, as there's constant foot traffic. • Spicy Dish Issue: While the server did warn me, the dish I received was genuinely too spicy. After mentioning it to the waiter, they were kind enough to bring me a replacement dish free of charge, which was excellent customer service on their part. • Inconsistent Portion Sizes: My wife ordered a pumpkin dish that was surprisingly small, especially when compared to my massive pork portion. Summary Overall, while there are a few points for potential improvement (the wait and portion size consistency), the total experience was very good.
It has a fixed three-courses menu ($45/person) that you can choose between different items. Def try the Shrimps under appetizers (the taste is very unique). As for the main meal, we ordered Arctic Char and flatbread fillet which was amazing: you really cannot argue with the taste/how they design their dishes. Drinks (cocktails) were okay (I expected more). The only caveats are it’s VERY fast paced: basically they feed you very quickly to serve more people (also it’s in FIDI so everyone is in a rush). So if you are looking for vibes, that’s not the place. Also seat organizations are not the best: they put people very close to each other (unless you are 3+), so you really cannot have a private convo.
Really enjoyed the spicy tuna, oyster, and scallops. They were fresh and well seasoned. But the bucatini texture is a bit soft. The monkfish cooking was fine, but monkfish is monkfish…you know
Plates are quite small and they recommend 8-9 plates for a table of four Everyone raved about the Gruyère fritters but I wasn’t really impressed. The scallops were really good! The chicken was really good and so was the octopus. Pork katsu was meh - too tough and dry. Cod was just alright too Toffee pudding - soooo good.
Underwhelming. The flavors were good, the pork katsu was un-michelin. In hindsight should have tried their famed grilled chicken. The service was good but again not what I expect from a Michelin Star restaurant. I was seated in a cold corner and since the courses were not timed, I could feel the wait chilling. Overall it was an okay experience, might try it again for their grilled chicken.

6th time here! And the first I was charged for bread; unluckily, on my birthday. I ordered two appetizers and requested for the bread, which was told there would be a separate charge. The first 2 times i was here I ordered the short rib, which left me a really good impression for their food; third time i ordered octopus and the forth time I ordered the beef kibbeh. Each time I was given bread; this time, no. I’m only complaining because their bread is really good and I am bitter about the differential treatment for not ordering main dishes. I just didn’t feel like trying a lot of one thing and wanted to try more of different things! I asked the waiter for why the bread was charged, but I also happened to get bread before when I only ordered the beef kibbeh…. There is some inconsistency here; I wondered if it was based on price, and the waiter said no. He said the chef changed the policy 2 weeks ago and they started charging for bread when the meal is not substantial enough. I orders two appetizers and a glass of wine. My entire paycheck came out to be $92! But apparently that was not substantial enough to get bread. My bad for not wanting the main and choosing alcohol with appetizers ?? Still paid them $22 in tips because apparently times are hard! It is my birthday today and I am charged with bread! Oh well!
Came here for restaurant week pre-fix, so my experience might be different than people who come normally. Short summary: It is very overrated as a Michelin restaurant. The pistachio bread was the first item and also the highlight of the whole meal... Everything felt so heavily seasoned (not an unique, tasty/flavorful way), my tastebud just couldn't get any rest. The Jerk Octobus and the kidney beans underneath were so salty, we had to keep drinking water. The desserts were also overly sweet. Also, the amount of protein contained in each dish was so minimal (other than the Katsu Pork that we had to pay $25 extra for). As for the environment, the restaurant got extremely loud. I think the wide table width definitely contributed to this problem. The food portions and the plates are not that big, but the table is so wide we had to scream across the table to talk to each other. In the end, everyone in the dining room was shouting. Service was good, though the servers kept bumping into my head the whole time while walking around... Should've shorten the table and make the walking space more spacious instead. Anyway, this might not be a true representation of what this place can truly offer, but the sampling experience definitely discourages us to come back to try their normal menu.
For a 1 star Michelin restaurant crown shy fell short of expectations where it mattered the most (the food). A very vibey space full of date night couples sets the stage for what you think is going to be a great experience that beer materializes. The food was looked good but the flavors just weren’t there. Everything tasted like you’ve had it before somewhere else at a much cheaper price. The food wasn’t bad certainly but the only thing I remember was the bread which isn’t a good sign. Service was ok but had to flag down a server a couple times to order another drink which basically should never happen at this level. Final verdict: would return for drinks at the pretty bar but skip dinner.
I took my date for their birthday and there sure were surprises! I do highly recommend this place, and have been multiple times, but as outlined below, it was a little rocky this time. First we were seated by the open kitchen, which on first thought, was very cool. Seeing all the action and food getting made and stuff. We were seated at a two-person table. Now first of all, the table was very long 24 inches wide by 36 to 48 inches long, if I had to say. It was very loud in the restaurant so I was leaning into the table to hear, but the table edge is very sharp/square so it was digging into my chest. Then OUT OF NOWHERE, there was a very loud “Yo Ho” / “Heave Ho” masculine-in-unison chanting that came from all of the kitchen staff. The kitchen is open to the restaurant dining area. Picture a Viking-era group of Vikings yelling “Hi! ho!” Or perhaps “Yo, ho” like the staff on the ship in Les Miserables. Or perhaps a “battle hymn / battle cry.” I actually was startled. We each looked at each other from across the very long table. So, I was like “oh my… Must be a special occasion or like “1,000 days accident free” type celebration or something.” Nope. The chanting / yelling / in-unison grunting was every several minutes or so. It was unsettling and starling and interrupted our conversation and was very distracting. Mid thought you would be talking and just be overrun with “HO!” I also couldn’t hear the conversation from across the 36 / 48 inch table. So I turned the table sideways so we could be closer to each other (remember the width of the table was probably only 24 inches). Our waitress came up to us frenetically and said “you can’t do that.” (I had already turned the table, so you technically can do it). I said “it’s like we’re in Les Miserables, there’s yelling and chanting and I can’t hear.” Our waitress said “if you want I can move you to a quieter spot.” I have no clue what the kitchen staff was saying or why they were yelling, I’m sure there’s a technical culinary reason. Us moving, of course, actually ended up being perfect. The manager came over and we were moved to a most perfect corner, far away from the in-unison kitchen chanting. He was very nice about it and even checked in later to see if our experience had improved. Our new waitress, Julia, was fabulous. So attentive and kind and understanding and really honestly talented at her job. Give her a raise please. The Som picked us a most perfect German bottle of white wine, a crisp, mineral driven white, like I’ve never had from Germany before, exactly what we wanted. The food was sublime (must have been all the coordinated kitchen chef chanting). The chicken juicy, the cod fresh, the salad crisp. Desert, divine. They were so understanding of my food allergies and even marked up the menu. Real pro job there. Overall, a superb, superb experience. Just like the last time I was there. There was one mess at the end where I asked for a Tito’s and Club drink for a night cap and they brought Grey Goose. Thank god the bar server said “here’s your Grey Goose.” Because I have a severe allergy to wheat ! Which Grey Goose is made from ! But guys, the open kitchen battle hymn thing, in an extremely loud restaurant with very long tables, was not it. Close off the kitchen or maybe consider reducing the chanting volume. However, we were moved to a great spot and it ended up being perfect. So when you go, request to be away from the kitchen, unless you like that kind of thing, or perhaps don’t want to talk to your partner during dinner. Finally, just a note to ownership / management, the men’s bathroom smells of fungal growth (I’m in commercial real estate, I know). There must have been some kind of water intrusion event and I think you may need to remediate inside the walls or ceilings. Take a sniff, you’ll smell it.
The food was great, no doubt. The service was disappointing. Must of been an off night because I've heard great things because every touch point of service (Waitress, Bar, Kitchen) made a mistake and…

Some dishes are Michelin star - some are not Servers are polite helpful and friendly - management are not. The drinks are ice basically. Decor is good atmosphere is noisy a bit brash.
Underwhelmed and disappointed I was in town for only four nights. I decided to give this place a few hours of one of those precious evenings after seeing a video released by Bon Appétit about “NYC’s Best Grilled Chicken”. Trying various chicken-centric dishes from places all over the country is a passion of mine so I was ecstatic when I learned about this Michelin Star rated dish. The atmosphere was lovely upon entering which really set the mood and further heightened my anticipation. We sat down and for whatever reason the server seemed to be in a poor, low energy, state of being. She gave us an inkling of an attitude for no reason and sounded like she didn’t want to be there. Oh well, I thought. This didn’t bother me at all because I know people can have bad nights. It didn’t change my level of excitement, one iota, for the mouth watering chicken I had seen on YouTube and had since been craving. The time had come and it finally arrived right before my eyes. It looked exactly as I remembered. Phenomenal presentation. I was full of joy because it’s not often you fly half way across the country and get to actually eat something you see online -But then I took my first bite- The skin, that had been so proudly bragged upon in the video, by Jassimran Singh, himself, for being crispy - was all but sad and floppy. In the video he demonstrates the multiple steps taken to ensure crispiness like brushing it with brown butter and putting it under a salamander. He even hits it with a fork and you can hear it plain as day. Mine, on the other hand, must have been sitting for a long time prior to service because it was as wet and soggy as a hotdog bun in the hands of Joey Chestnut. Okay, okay, I kept telling myself. The skin isn’t even my favorite part. I’m here for the MEAT. So what if the skin is like a hot piece of wilted lettuce. I cut into the breast and visibly saw that it was quite juicy. The smile re-appeared onto my face. I put it in my mouth hoping for that 24hr citrus brine to punch me right in the tastebuds and BOOM - bland. Nothing special at all. Barely better than a $5 Costco chicken. On top of that the meat was almost cold. Barely room temperature. I couldn’t believe this $50 half of a chicken was disappointing me in so many ways at once. 4.9/10 Clucks The smile had left my face once more. The last piece of the proverbial pie, about which I had been looking forward, was the famous house made hot sauce. In the video I had seen him blend together a fine bouquet of chilis into an absolutely perfect consistency. Well, reader, I regret to inform you that they were right all along. You can’t judge a book by its cover. The sauce was wack. It wasn’t very spicy and it wasn’t exceedingly flavorsome. It wasn’t necessarily BAD but it certainly wasn’t GOOD. Don’t meet your heroes, folks. Congrats to them on their one star but dang ol’ if a Michelin critic was served the dish given to me that evening then they would have assuredly been cast back into starlessness. Stay frosty, Crown Shy.

We were really excited to try their menu, but the experience turned out to be quite underwhelming. We started with the pear and hummus appetizer, which came with just a few pieces of vegetables - two mini carrots and a few radish slices served over ice. It tasted fine, but nothing memorable, and the portion felt unnecessarily stingy. With a dip-based dish, a more generous serving of vegetables would have made sense. The pear appetizer was equally unimpressive - essentially sliced pear with a small amount of dip, something easily replicable at home. For mains, we ordered the octopus, chicken leg, and gnocchi. Unfortunately, none of them stood out. The octopus, in particular, was disappointing - it was blackened to the point of being overly crispy rather than properly cooked. The portion was extremely small (exactly three pieces), and it didn’t pair well with the bean curry base at all. The gnocchi was very thick and heavy; after just a few bites it felt overwhelming. While the waitress described it as “rich,” it came across as overly dense and bland, with nothing to balance or cut through the heaviness. It also needed more sauce, as we found ourselves drinking water just to get through it. The chicken leg was the best of the three dishes, but even that felt ordinary, something anyone could easily make at home, not something that justified ordering it here. We made the right call by skipping dessert. Their pistachio bread was good, I wouldn’t call it extraordinary. Overall, it was a very disappointing experience.
