Opinions de Izakaya Toribar New York
Will def come back! The seasoning of skewers is not too heavy and I personally prefer it that way. The best grill squid and chicken liver I had in NYC izakaya so far.
Ate hear twice on recent work trip. Everything I tried was very good, favorites were okonomikaki and asparagus w pork belly. Even on busy Friday night was a good experience.
Stumbled into this spot in search of a late night eatery in Midtown East. Friday night and it wasn’t overly crowded, service was attentive, and the food was a surprising hit! All the yakitoris were delicious. I would skip the Okinomiyaki, we got it with seafood and it was really rubbery, but overall solid spot
I really enjoyed my time at this Izakaya! The food was great from beginning to end. The karaage was very crispy on the outside and juicy inside—some of the best I’ve had in a long time. The agedashi tofu was also very good—soft and smooth with a tasty broth that wasn’t too salty. After that, I had the seaweed tofu salad, which was light, fresh, and really calming in flavor. I also had a few yakitori skewers, and they were all cooked just right. They were tender, had a nice smoky taste, and were full of flavor. I especially liked the chicken thigh and mushroom ones. The place felt warm and cozy, and the staff were kind and helpful without being too much. I’ll definitely come back!
So good we went TWICE during our visit to NYC! We visited Japan six months ago and it's been hard to find quality yakitori since then. We were staying at a hotel around the block and stumbled in here - it was packed on a Friday night but they called us for our table in 3 min after telling us 20 min. Score! The yakitori was PHENOMENAL and the best we've had since Japan. The thighs w/ scallion, meatball, breast, and skin were fantastic. Their karaage is sooo crispy and served classic with kewpie mayo + lemon. The bar is decorated nicely. We went back 2 days later right when it opened and got right in. Great attentive service each night. They warned us the yakitori might take a while during the busy night but it really didn't take long. 5 stars for Izakaya Toribar!!!!!
New review added below. : It was really enjoyable. 24 Jan 2025 The food was good. Would say the best Yakitori in NY. Old review: Visit 24 Jan 2024 The food is really fantastic. We enjoyed the Yakitori fully. Again the best in NY so far. If we have a chance we will be back. We have tasted Yakitori all over the world and this was really good. There were also dishes that were finished as chicken wings 3 hours after opening hour. Strange as they are open until 3 AM. Kirin beer is always good and the hot sake not bad. First time ever we had burnt edamame ! 20 Dec 2024 But the food was good. Would say the best Yakitori in NY.
This is actually my favorite yakitori spot for chicken skewers and beer. Staff are always friendly when I go. Best spot on the house is right in front of the grill. Stellar atmosphere. You know it's good when Japanese customers come in, and the place gets super lively. I highly recommend spacing out really large yakitori orders, because they cook them fast and it'll come out all at once. I'd say, best for smaller groups of 2-4 or solo. I normally order the entire selection of chicken skewers; some are better with tare/sauce, some are fine with just salt and pepper.
It was a very cozy spot for 4 people group on a Thursday night. I heard they are opening a second spot in Manhattan. I cannot wait to check out the new location too! The food was great so as the service. I highly recommend the yakitori here. I will definitely stop by to try other menus next time.
Cozy, lively, and tucked away izakaya place. Servers were very attentive and friendly! Servers were also very considerate and gave us a pair of food scissors and tweezers for our food!! They do dim the lights in the evening so it becomes very intimate but dark. Cool music playlist. The deep fried squid legs were a great appetizer. Chicken and scallion skewers were delicious! It is VERY affordable for the huge piece of chicken on there. Eggplant, shishito peppers (they’re not spicy and were sweet), and the pork with bacon skewers were also delicious. If you like fish, the Hamachi Kama is a must!! The Takoyaki was not my favorite since it was 85% batter. If you don’t like alcohol, the Yuzico or Grapico is a great alternative. Been looking for an izakaya place ever since Yokocho Village closed and this one was not bad. 🚻 Gender neutral restroom 👶🏻 Changing station available inside
Food: 5 stars Service: 5 stars Ambiance: 5 stars (for fun dinner/drinks, not romantic) I’ve visited here few times already and food is consistently amazing. While skewers seem to be their popular picks with variety of options, their dishes like yakisoba and karaage are deeeeelicious. Food: My personal skewer favorites are chicken thighs, chicken wings (with sauce), and chicken skin. Chicken meatballs have been the favorite from everyone at the table with egg yolk sauce. Yakisoba with pork belly and agedash tofu are also amazing. Food comes out as they are being prepared, so pace yourself and order accordingly. Service: everyone is very attentive. Let’s just say your water cup is never empty and you won’t run out of clean napkins without ever asking. Place is vibrant and fun. I would go there for a romantic date, but it’s a great place for a fun date or small group fun evening. I think the biggest table was for 6 people. Drink options are also very good. I’ve only ordered sake, beer, and whiskey on their rocks. I think they have cocktails but decided to stay with other ones. I’ve gone there with my kids. They LOVED the food, but I would definitely go there when it first open at 5 to avoid the crowd. Lastly, I don’t want to give away my secret but that their fried mochi is so good!!
This place is awesome. It has clean and stylish Japanese vibe. There is a great variety of food from small bites to grilled meets with special sauces. Every one who likes Japanese cuisine should come over. The food is very fresh made from the top quality ingredients. You can also sit inside or outside if you feel like it. If you are lucky you might even meet a chef himself. I had a great time and will come back here soon for sure!
Authentic Japanese yakitori in a cozy izakaya setting. Beer selection is good too. The waitress is very friendly to let us came in a bit earlier. There is a washcloth smell when they first open the door in an evening. Other than that I’m quite satisfied with the place. Would rate it 4.5 stars if there is such an option.
Came here on a Friday night (around 6:30) and a table for 2 took around 10 min. But soon after I noticed there was a line so be sure to come early. The wait staff was pretty good even though the place was really packed and busy. We came here for the yakitori but also ended up getting the karaage and okonomiyaki which were both really good. For the yakitori we had a few from each category. The chicken ones seemed a bit dry but thr others came out really nicely. My favorites were the pork jawel and the pork wrapped enoki. It's very easy to keep ordering here so try to keep a mental count of how much you ordered in total since it can get expensive very quickly. Oh if you end up setting at the bar you get a nice view of all the cooking and if you're lucky they might even give you free yakitori if they made extra!
Came in at 11:30, it was slow, was unsure if they were open but a server assured me they were still serving, just doing last call for food. Food was fine but didn’t order much or stay long. The kitchen was playing music loud enough to hear clearly on the floor. That’s fine, but with the FOH also playing different music on the speakers I felt like I was going lose my mind. Would’ve ordered more food but just couldn’t stand to be in there longer than absolutely necessary. Honestly, staff seemed desperate to get out of there. I get it, been there, and it seemed crazy slow. Owners might want consider changing the weekday hours.
As a local guide I can honestly say I had a nice shared meal here w some friends and we also shared a bottle of sake which was nice. It took about an hour for the fried squid and in the end it was time to leave so we asked for the squid to be removed from our bill as it never arrived. Honest mistake that’s the way the squid goes. The food was delicious and the service was kind The music was bad and the seats were comfy Triple star
While Izakaya Toribar looks like a cozy spot, the food quality didn’t match the vibe. Cocktails were overly sweet and flat. Most dishes — skewers, fried chicken — tasted like pre-made items, lacking freshness or real flavor. The chicken skin skewer was dry and greasy, with no charcoal aroma. Loud music and fast-but-bland food made for a disappointing experience. We spent over $100 for three and left unsatisfied. Wouldn’t recommend for those looking for quality yakitori.
First of all, the serving dish was broken. Yakitori was ok. The only thing that stood out was the chicken heart. Will not recommend their fried items(batter fell apart after first bite). Chicken karrage and Pork belly Okonomiyaki were very mediocre. We came at Friday 5:30. Service was the worst part! The servers asked us four times if we have got everything we ordered in the end. Obviously they were trying to get rid of us since there are people waiting for our table. Super annoying!
