Back Pocket Bar in NYC is one of those hidden gems you stumble upon and can't help but love. My wife and I come at least once a month. It's cozy, with a great crowd and excellent music playing all the time. Everyone sings along to their favorite songs. The selection is just wine and beer, but it's a good one. Whether you're looking to start the night off right or wind down after a long day, this place is perfect. Highly recommended for anyone seeking a laid-back spot with great vibes and even better tunes.
Went with a couple of friends to catch up. Loved this place! Great wine and interesting drinks - especially the Sake Lemonade. Fantastic atmosphere with good music and a lively vibe yet still good for conversation. Will definitely return. Wine around $15/glass.
Such a cool little spot! Super easy to miss but definitely worth a visit. Love the fact that they give you some popcorn to snack on. Best thing is also that they have frozen Aperol spritzes. Amazing! Now for my standard COVID comments as of September 2022. No masks being worn but it’s no longer mandatory. Pretty small location but felt comfortable while it was not too crowded.
Overall rating: 4.8 Always a joy to visit. Drinks are top notch and bartenders are so nice! I like to come on a Saturday afternoon and just read a book. The popcorn is also so good and the drinks are very reasonably priced. Definitely have to come back when I get the chance.
Great neighborhood bar. They only have beer and wine. Great atmosphere. Great music.
A gem on this earth. Will forever bring friends here on Friday night for Monique, the immaculate vibes, and awesome drinks. This bar is a HK staple, and yes pocket bar is great too, but back pocket is 10x better. The community, wholesome. The vibes, electric. The bartenders, best there ever was. Literally Weiwei and Monique be putting in the work. Dancing, performing, making everyone feel welcome, and literally running the entire bar by themselves. My glass is never empty, there is always a good song on, hit it at the right time of night and everyone is out of their seat singing along. Could not recommend this bar enough to anyone looking for a perfect night out.
Ok so my friends and I decided to try this place since the bar we were originally going to meet up was too crowded and let me tell you it was the best decision of the night! Our bartender was a gorgeous girl name Moe and she was soooo helpful and so sweet and so much fun! She really made the entire experience a night to remember! Mo provided such great energy! She was simultaneously making drinks and playing dj from her own incredible playlist and hyping everyone up and dancing for us while also making sure we got out free popcorn snacks! She was a one woman show and we loved it! She had the entire bar dancing and singing along. It was like one of those movie scenes where a bunch of strangers become friends for a night and just truly have fun together and it was all due to her being such a positive energy! I asked her when she works and she said weds thru sat I believe because my friends and I definitely want to come back and see if we can experience this magical night again. Absolutely a million times would recommend! I give this place all the stars!
Love Back Pocket! Go to spot for great wine, great ambiance, and great company - be that with friends of the lovely and talented Monique. Crowd is normally good vibes and the music is always fun - expect many singalongs!
Such an amazing find in the heart of the Big Apple! It's places like this that make a night out in NYC so much fun. The staff are extremely hospitable and the regulars are super friendly. Love the wine and beer selections too. Don't miss out!
Such a gem! I love the vibe, friendly service and great drinks. Plus, it's great they're serving wine fresh and sustainably with reusable steel kegs. Look forward to visiting again soon!
Favorite bar in Hell’s Kitchen. They have struck a chic balance between intimacy, approachability. Perfect for close conversations during the week and fun dances on the weekends! And free popcorn?!?(^◇^)
The vibe in this bar is AMAZING and definitely because of the service. You walk in to a candlelit bar, a great playlist, and Mo- the most interesting, fun, bartender ever. She kept the drinks flowing, supplied accessories to add to the experience (we were celebrating a bride to be), and a never ending sing-along. Definitely a top notch experience. Drinks available wine, beer, and a delicious cider. There's also popcorn to snack on
We stayed just a block away from this bar on our trip to New York. My wife and I stumbled into it while looking for a place to grab some drinks. Very small, but a super cool atmosphere. This ia a beer and wine venue. The bartender was super fun and welcoming. We had a few drinks, played three rounds of bingo and had a blast.
Amazing vibes always. Never ceases to amaze that Mo can run the whole bar alone never missing a beat and still give the level of personal attention to every patron. Caution: you will lose your voice singing along to all your favorite songs.
Such an inviting location. Great music, great vibes, great drinks . Mo was phenomenal and made this such an awesome experience. She went above and beyond to help us celebrate our bride to be 💍! 1,000 % recommend
We loved the vibe at this place. Great music. Simple drink menu of wine & beer. Friendly folks at the bar. Everything was chill. Spectacular service from Mo & Tiffany. Raffle night was a blast ! Don't want to tell too many people about this place. Want to keep it cool & intimate.
My absolute FAVORITE bar in NYC. This is the type of place you go to meet people and sing your heart out. Not a piano bar, but might as well be. A place you can go to truly be yourself and enjoy your evening. No pretense, no bad attitudes, just fun. The bartenders are fantastic and incredibly kind. 100% would recommend.
The best place to go in NYC for whiskey fans. Great selection, fair prices, and incredibly knowledgeable and friendly employees and owner. Surprisingly reasonable prices for anything from octomore to buffalo trace antique collection. Highly recommend and made for an amazing experience for me and my dad. Next time I'm in NYC this is first on the list of places to go.
I stopped by On The Rocks for the first time today and had an amazing experience. Lamar and Patrick were behind the bar and couldn’t have been more welcoming, they were patient, knowledgeable, and helped me explore a few whiskeys until I found something I absolutely loved (even though I showed up pretty clueless about what I wanted). I also had the chance to meet the owner, Howie, who was just as kind and down-to-earth. The place itself is cozy, relaxed, and feels like a hidden gem in Hell’s Kitchen. Great atmosphere, great energy, and genuinely great people. Easily a 5-star spot, I’ll definitely be coming back.
Intimate bar specializing in whiskey. Bartenders have an extensive knowledge of whiskey and are passionate about the topic, they would love to help you find a new favorite.
On the Rocks is one of my favorite bars in NYC. I love the intimate atmosphere of the bar and the friendly interaction with the bartenders. They have a huge selection of whiskeys and bourbons and to my knowledge one of the only bars that allows you to do a tasting before selecting what you want poured. The bartenders are very knowledgeable and eager to help you find your next pour. But word of advice be sure to let them know what you price range is for a pour of whiskey or bourbon because the bill may surprise you when time comes to pay. 🤣 But I highly recommended this bar but know it is small so when it gets busy it gets very crowded other than that it’s a great local bar in the HK area.
Honestly, as a tourist if you enjoy your whiskey. The bare tenders know there stuff. It’s an incredibly friendly atmosphere and I highly recommend it.
a mecca for whiskey connoisseurs and fans alike. had so much fun here, great whiskey, great conversations, owner, bartenders, fellow patrons. a grownups bar for the whiskey otaku to relish in an incredible selection and institutional knowledge of all things whiskey that is astounding and so much fun. i don’t have the depth of palate for it but the conversation and personality was truly awesome.
Coming from Florida I was having a tough time finding somewhere in the Manhattan area that was a low key place with a great bourbon selection. I stumbled upon On the Rocks and very glad I did. I was fortunate enough to meet the owner, Howard who was very generous and gave me a pour of my all time favorite. They had a great selection and I had a couple pours of some really good bourbon. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable and engage in conversation and share their thoughts and insights. A fantastic place and I will definitely be back on my next trip.
Don’t judge a place by its size. This small whiskey bar is a must visit for anyone who loves whiskey or wants to learn about it. Extremely knowledgeable bartenders especially Patrick who generously shares his expertise. One definitely comes out feeling a “little more educated” and maybe break some of your myths about what you thought you knew 👍🏻
I do not like whiskey, however, with that being said I found this to be a pleasant experience. I came with some friends who were whiskey drinkers and they also had a good time. We all did a 3 tasting flight. The bartender seemed very knowledgeable. He took the time to speak with us individually to understand what we like, our flavor profiles, and our overall preferences. Then he would step away to take inventory of what he had on the shelf to curate a tasting flight for us. Granted, if you know exactly what you want, you do not have to go through this process, but I found it to be exciting. The bottles are also set up in front of you so you know exactly what you're drinking. This is not a place where you come to take shots, but you sit, taste, enjoy your alcohol and the company around you. While I wouldn't go back by myself, I may take a friend who does like whiskey. They have a huge selection to pick from. Also if you're not into drinking straight whiskey, they will make mixed drinks with whiskey. They do not serve food so be sure to eat before hand or make a reservation elsewhere for after like we did.
This unassuming whiskey bar has a no-nonsense, knowledgeable, and friendly attitude towards whiskey that make it an absolute pleasure for whiskey lovers. The staff are knowledgeable, the choices of whiskey are in the hundreds, and the atmosphere is friendly and enjoyable. My personal recommendation is to go in and simply ask for the bartender's input on what to drink because they'll definitely point you in the right direction and introduce you to something new. Overall, top notch location, would become a regular if I lived in NYC.
If you have ANY interest in whisky/whiskeys, you are going to love this niche nook. It's not cheap and it's not a sellout to other drinks like beer or hard sodas. Like many businesses, costs have gone up, but a good whisky was never going to be cheap anyway. The gents behind the bar will be your guides (I don't even recall if they had a written menu)... Just tell them what interests you (and your budget maybe) and they will take you through the story and beauty of each unique flavor. They do flights too if you'd like a smaller pour and more variety. I'm so glad my friend found and introduced me to this fabulous and fairly tiny place.
Truly one of the Best whiskey experiences in America. This is a similar experience to Canon Whiskey in Seattle or Jack Rose in Washington DC. Sitting at the small bar the bartender has a conversation with you asking what you like and giving recommendations from their 300 to 400 bottle selection. I had a flight of Speyside whiskeys and Irish whiskeys with a friend. Both selections were made by the bartender and at least half of The distilleries were unfamiliar to me. Both flights were excellent!
A whiskey bar if you want to try something good and new. The bartender was very friendly and explained the type of rye that I was looking to try. He understood my taste pallet and suggested a rye based on it. It was very good. The decor is nice, a small place where you can enjoy some background jazz and a glass of whiskey.
Amazing whiskey bar with 363 different whiskeys and very knowledgeable bartender. He was able to explain every whiskey, has tried all but 3, and was able to answer every question we had. I did not like whiskey until I went to this bar. He picked a very mild brand that he knew was good for non-whiskey drinkers and made amazing old fashioneds with it! The prices range from $18 to $1400 per drink but average $20-25. Well worth the money. It's a small and cozy bar, a hidden gem!
Cute spot great vibe! Candle-lit and dark. Wine & beer menu. The Sunshine IPA was super bitter though, and felt kind of expensive! ($11). Really enjoyed the atmosphere. Free popcorn is a nice touch. Cozy for sure! The height of the seats felt a little bit off with the high tables. Server had us clear the wrong bill which was not too big of a deal, but with only 4 or so customers, I think maybe that could be avoided in the future.
I’ve had really wonderful experiences here. The bar is small, and bartenders here generally make the occasion feel warm and community-oriented. It is jovial and silly and warm. The selection of beer and wine is also excellent, and the free popcorn is a cute touch. Recently, a friend and I were having beers and catching up here. The bartender was friendly and attentive, and she seemed to imply she wanted to take a shot with us. She did this a few times, and we agreed to. At the end of the night, however, we found she had charged us for each shot. We expressed some surprise. She sort of shrugged and said “we do this thing called upselling.” We paid, of course, but the experience felt underhanded and strange in retrospect. Something to keep an eye on! Otherwise, a charming gem in West Manhattan.
Fun little bar but tiny and super loud so plan to come here if you wanna drink and sing with your friends and not necessarily have a conversation of any kind!
I don't usually write reviews...but my friends and I had a terrible experience at this bar last week. At the end of the night, I went to Yelp and Google to read reviews about this bar. To my surprise, all of the negative reviews basically touched upon the same themes: rude, arrogant, and condescending bartender (Lamar), overpriced drinks, no menu, and no prices are listed. I don't know how you can run a bar/restaurant without a menu or a price list. We also were all overcharged and never received an apology from Patrick (the other bartender) who ran our cards. When we asked for a menu, Lamar said in a harsh tone of voice: "If I had a menu, I would have given to you." Interestingly, the owner/manager (Howard), replies to these negative reviews on Google and says every time: "Please describe the bartender. Thank you." Or "Hi, I apologize for that experience. Can you describe the bartender to me so I can address it. Thank you." Invariably, people describe the same bartender (Lamar and sometimes Patrick) in their reviews. Howard's replies are from years ago. Clearly, Howard knows about Lamar's behavior towards some customers and yet Lamar is still working there. Fortunately, there are many bars in Hell's Kitchen to go to besides this one.
