Opinions de Totto Ramen New York
We walked in on a Sunday night around 7.45pm and had a 30 minute wait. The tonkotsu ramen and tebasaki wings were the standout dishes for us, but everything else was also delicious. The tonkotsu ramen was one of the best bowls of ramen we’ve had outside of Japan and the seasoning on the wings was so moreish and had us licking our fingers to make sure none of it went to waste. If you’re getting the bingsu for dessert, note that it’s massive and definitely something that’s meant to be shared. We recommended this place to a friend who also loved it.
One of my new favorite ramen spots in NYC! I was craving some ramen for lunch and made a reservation same day. I was surprised that there were only a few openings left for lunchtime on a weekday. Party of 1 only allows you to reserve bar seating which made sense when I got there since it was packed. I made a reservation for 2:00 but arrived at 1:30. The hostess was extremely friendly and was able to seat me right away. The menu is by QR code but I already knew what I wanted. Had my order taken the food came out rather quick. I had the Lunch Set Special for $27, which was an Ume Rice Ball and the Ginger Miso Ramen, which are both vegan menu options. I am not vegan but felt like doing my cholesterol a favor today. The Rice Ball was amazing, the pickled plum was top notch and tasted just right. I liked having the ginger to add in too. The Ginger Miso Ramen piqued my interest because it’s not a flavor I’d seen before in the realms of Miso or Vegan so I wanted to try it out. It had a very deep flavor with the right amount of spice, not overpowering. All of the toppings/mix ins worked perfectly. The service was excellent and my water was constantly being refilled by any employee who noticed it getting low. I recommend and will definitely be back!
When friend wanted ramen in 90 degree weather and has never tried dipping ramen, I knew my job was to find a place in NYC that served what we were looking for. What a coincidence that Tonchin was around and as a bonus, Michelin starred. Tonchin offers a $25 lunch special with a main entree and a side. Friend and I decided to split the lunch special, so we ordered the spicy goma tsukemen ($3 more for this) and the shrimp rice ball (extra $1 for this). Since we were splitting, we added an extra shrimp rice ball ($8) so we can each enjoy a full side. The tsukemen was a hit with both of us and the portion was just enough to keep us both satiated. We found it amusing that the rice ball did not come in the shape of a rice ball, but looked more like a hand roll. Nevertheless, that was good too. We still had some room for dessert, so we got the matcha milk shaved ice ($18). Soooo good, no regrets ordering that, even though we struggled to finish the last few bites. Definitely want to come back for lunch at Tonchin for all my future NYC visits!
One of my fav ramen spot in NYC! The ramen broth is rich and flavorful. They use thick bamboo shoots, most places use thing ones. The pork was just okay. But overall a solid bowl of ramen. I had to try the shaved ice in freezing winter because the photos looked irresistible. It is HUGE! I froze to the core for this massive shaved ice, and it delivered: balanced sweetness and earthy matcha flavor. Can't wait to have it in summer. The chicken wings are just okay. The place was busy, but I snagged a bar seat without waiting. Highly recommend and I'll definitely come again!
I dine in with my boyfriend with no reservation. We waited for a while and sat at the bar. We ordered a spicy tan tan and tonkotsu classic, we both agreed that we loved the classic more. It has a less of a complex flavor than tan tan. Their maguro was fresh and delicious with the seaweed and lettuce together. Their margarita and old fashioned was phenomenal, I can tasted the yuzu flavor on their margarita and the old fashioned has an interesting vanilla-y twist. The staff was excellent, attentive, and super friendly. Can’t wait to come back soon!
Ambiance (5/5): The establishment is small, dark, but not loud. There is a front waiting area that connects to the bar where you can wait before you are seated. Without a reservation, I was hearing that the wait would be upwards of an hour for 2. However, we had our reservation well over a week in advance. Service (5/5): Our service was fast. We loitered after our meal for about 15-30 minutes and they did not try to kick us out! We appreciated that. Classic Tonkatsu (5/5): No wonder this place has been awarded for a Micheline Bib Gourmand year over year! It is definitely one of my top ramen spots in nyc!! The broth has incredible depth. Their pork slices are unique that they are very thin but the flavors are marinated into the meat for a nice tender bite. The noodles were a chewy bounce. I definitely will be back to try their other ramens! 2nd visit but during lunch and highly suggest getting there right at 11:30am when it opens. We queued up before 11:30 and were the first to get seated. If you miss that window, you’ll be met with a line! Lunch Set: $27 for an app and ramen Tsukuba Bun 1pc +$1 - delicious Tsukemen +$3 - the thick noodles were so good but slightly too undercooked for my taste. The dipping broth had so much flavor. The roasted chashu is very thin but still had a lovely flavor. I was very full by the end!
Stopped by here pretty randomly. But was pleasantly surprised to find out many Michelin ratings they had. The wait was about 20 minutes on a Sunday in the middle of the day. The Ramen was amazing, portion of the content inside was a little bit on the lower end I would say, which means you can definitely get a little appetizer and not need a midwife to leave the building. Overall, it’s worth the wait and the Michelin nominations don’t lie.
Beautifully designed space and delicious food! It was our first time at Tonchin. We had a bit of trouble finding it at first:) The minimalist door/window design cleverly blended in with the wall of the building. We went at lunchtime, ordered the lunch combo of Tokyo Ramen with Tsukune Bun, Miso Ginger Ramen with a salad, also ordered the Chicken Mazemen. We love everything, the broth of the Ramens are rich and tasty, the texture and flavor of the Chicken Mazemen was unique and delightful. Friendly and attentive service. Make a reservation ahead of time, go at lunchtime if you want to avoid the crowds. Highly recommend.
TOCHIN NEW YORK is the best Ramen restaurant in New York! We have been coming here for lunch, dinner all the time since we moved to New York from Paris. We have tried so many Ramen in NYC, TOCHIN is the best of the best Ramen restaurants for me. Interior design is simple and classic, I appreciate the aesthetic concept, it's a pleasure to dine in such an environment. We took all the friends here all the time when they come to visit NYC. I strongly recommend you to make a reservation for this best Michelin recommendation restaurant.
Honestly, I don't quite trust most ramen spots in NYC because as an Asian, I've tasted ramens countless times both in Japan and nearby countries. That said, Tonchin is the best place you can find when you're craving ramen in New York. Their dishes aren't 100% traditional, yet they're creative while still maintaining the essentials. I especially recommend the "Smoked dashi ramen." I love its deep flavor with katsuobushi and clams.
Really good ramen and can usually find a table if you're going midweek (we waited like 10-15 min)! We loved everything we ordered, tried a few different types of ramen and enjoyed the variety. The ambience is not necessarily the usual "michelin ramen", feels very casual but nice.
One of the best bowls of ramen in Manhattan. The depth of flavor in this warm and rich bowl of ramen was incredible as was the small salad and dessert. Each dish was delicious, beautifully presented, and great thought was clearly put into every detail of the food and environment. I’ll be back again for sure!
Tonchin was very well organized and delicious. The restaurant itself was very clean and cozy . A reservation was required and is definitely worth taking any available spots. The waiters and staff were very nice and they accommodated us to everything we needed. They gave hearty portions and it was spectacular. Overall, the food was delicious and the staff were so kind. You DEFINITELY need to come to Tonchin.😋
The food was delicious. We had the chicken as a starter (SOO GOOD), then the classic tonkotsu, which was great. Pay attention to the question you are asked when you arrive (would you like still or sparkling water to start ?) because the $8 bottle of water is a bit of a rip-off. We would have preferred tap water, but we didn't understand the question...
Had dinner there on Sunday. Host did a great job even though it was clearly busy. 20 min wait, but we were walk in’s so not a problem for us. Love the convenient text updates. Our only complaints were the gentleman behind the bar made us a bit uncomfortable with making us feel like he was annoyed we were even there. Not sure why. And the loud door, I understand needing heavy doors in a windy city but it sounded like a bomb was going off next door every few seconds. That being said, that FOOD deserves 5 stars. Definitely some of the best ramen I’ve ever had. Ramen was so good me and my friend forgot to even talk to each other! Will definitely be back. Though we’ll probably request a table far from the entrance.
Classic Tonkotsu Ramen and the Matcha Shaved Ice: WOW!! The broth for the ramen was incredible and the flavor of the whole dish was amazing. Recommend ordering the chilli oil on the side. The matcha shaved ice was so different and refreshing with a honey cream on top. Reservation recommended.
We came across Tonchin while looking for Michelin starred or recommended restaurants in NYC. The moment I saw the Tonkotsu, I placed the reservation. We went last Thursday around 12:45pm for lunch. The wait, even with the reservation, was roughly 10 minutes, so not terrible. We each got the Chashu rice roll, Tonkotsu Ramen, and we shared the Curry Cheese wings along with the Gyoza. We spoke with the wait staff and found out that the restaurant originated in Ikebukuro, which made a lot of sense. Gyoza - Very traditional in flavor, reminded me of Gyoza in Tokyo. The shape is different than the traditional pleated style but the flavor remained wonderful. 8/10 Curry Cheese Wings - These were delicious. Brought to a perfect crisp, the skin was beautifully coated with the Japanese style curry powder and sprinkled with what appeared to be Parmesan cheese. Incredible overall and a pairing I hadn't considered before. A great way to elevate a classic dish. 9/10 Chashu Rice Roll - A unique take on Onigiri, maybe not perfect for delivery to the mouth, but allows significantly more filling (or in this case topping) to be included. The Chashu was delicious with a good amount of spice due to the spicy mayo. Some may find it "spicy", personally it was a 4/10 for spice which is exactly where I like my spice, with tons of flavor. 9/10 Tonchin Classic Tonkotsu - This was the closest ramen I've had in this country to traditional ramen in Japan. I don't say that lightly. The creamy texture of the broth, the perfect firmness of the ramen noodles, and the jammy egg cooked to perfection. If I had one complaint it would be that it didn't include thick sliced Chashu and rather had 3-4 thin slices. But the Chashu was incredibly falvorful so it didn't really matter. Not a drop was left in the bowl. Highly recommend if you want authentic Tonkotsu. 10/10 Overall a wonderful blend of traditional Japanese ramen with some hints of elevated NYC dining. And with a lunch menu that gets you a rice roll and ramen for $27, the price is more than reasonable. Can't recommend enough.
The food was very delicious. The service was phenomenal. We had a reservation and were seated promptly. Our server was very friendly and gave some great recommendations. I found the starters were so good, especially the cucumber. I also liked their ume rice ball. The ban ban kinoko ramen was a bit spicy for me but that's just my tolerance. Save room for dessert. I especially liked the signature Tokyo banana. I've been here a few times now and each time the experience has been fantastic. I really like this restaurant and will continue to return.
An amazing experience from beginning to end. We made a reservation and it was very busy on a Saturday night but only had to wait about 10 minutes for our table. The drinks we ordered were very good, I was a big fan of the mezcal and the whisky highball. The fried fish buns were absolutely delicious, I would have been happy just eating those. I ordered the classic Tokyo tonkotsu, and my wife the spicy tan tan. It was amazing! The broth was one of the best and most flavorful I have had. Everyone in our group said how good it was and we would all love to go back. Definitely recommend it!
While reservations are strongly recommended, they reserve half the floor for walk-ins! Yes, lines can get long but they have a big bar area and a waiting area. The food - we had curry and cheese wings, the signature tonkotsu ramen and the ban ban chicken mazemen noodles. The wings were delicious with its soy based sauce. Tonkotsu ramen was very thick - I liked it with their signature chilli oil (which was surprisingly spicy for a Japanese restaurant!) but my friend liked it on its own. Banban chicken mazemen noodles come soup-less, and has a strong peanut taste. I loved how soft the chicken was. I would love to go back and try more dishes!
Came here very late 9pm, no reservation needed for a Sunday night! Waited about 10 min before being seated for a table of 2. For appetizers we ordered Tebasaki (wings) and Tsukune (buns) both were delicious! We then ordered 2 Tonchin Classic Tokyo Tonkotsu (ramen). We were delighted! Best ramen we’ve had so far!
The most delicious ramen I have ever had. We stumbled in here cold after the Veteran's Day Parade and I’m so glad we did— I have been back 3 times since bc I find myself dreaming of the scrumptious ramen. The menu is not large, which I usually take as a good sign in a restaurant of doing their selected items well. The broth is incredibly flavorful, the texture of the ramen noodles is perfect, the meat tastes super fresh. Can’t recommend enough!!! Perfect for a cold winter day.
Delicious and a wonderful space! The dipping noodles and ramen were fantastic. I had some amazing ramens and noodles in the states and Japan and this was still top 5! Can’t recommend enough. Would give more than 5 stars if I could
I got the pork tonkatsu ramen, cucumber appetizer, and the Yuzu Margarita. Everything was 10/10! The ramen was flavorful but not heavy and the noodles were superb. The cucumbers were a perfect compliment to the hot broth. Service was unbelievably fast! I wanted to get the mango shaved ice, but have to come back with a group as that thing is MASSIVE!
I came here two times for lunch and for dinner. The ramen was tasty. It’s a nice place, but there is a small problem with the air after eating, our clothes smelled a lot like food. Everything was good, the waiters were kind and smiled. They also helped us choose some good sake. But the administrator was not nice. She talked to us in a rude and unfriendly way.
This Michelin recommended ramen spot offers some of the best Japanese ramen and dishes in NYC. A busy spot in Midtown, you might have to wait for a little bit before you can get seated. But, there's plenty of space and the restaurant has booths, tables, and bar seating. Service here is nice. We ordered the tebasaki wings, classic tonkotsu ramen, and smoked dashi ramen. The wings were delicious, and both crispy but juicy. The tonkotsu is a must-try as it was so rich and full of flavor. And, the smoked dashi came with clams and was also delicious. If you are a fan of spicy ramen, I also recommend getting their house-made chili oil on the side! I would love to come back to try their kakigori!
The Smokey miso noodles was SO GOOD! The dipping noodles was also excellent. Love the thick noodles. Both noodles had a nice texture and chew while the broth popped with flavor. I used to work in the offices above over 20 years ago. It would have been great to have a noodle shop here back then. This is definitely in my top 10 ramen spots in NYC. Don’t need to fly to Japan for an excellent bowl of noodles. Come here.
Great tonkotsu broth - I am a big fan but tan tan was alright. I was a bit underwhelmed with it. Good selection of drinks and the service is quick and very friendly. Would go back again 100%. Definitely need a reservation unless you want to wait 30mins to an hour for a table.
This place has a Michelin star for a reason. Got the classic tonkatsu ramen and one of the Chashu Tokyo rice balls. The rice ball was fire. Ramen I’ve had a lot of good ramen in my life so this wasn’t the best I’ve had but very good anyway. Great vibe. And one person seating is much faster than a group :)
I wasn't really a ramen person but this is my favorite ramen spot in nyc! Everything off of their menu is great. My go to has been the smoked dashi ramen (with clams) and I highly recommend the tebasaki wings. I have almost tried all of their kakigori flavors - the matcha and mango have been so refreshing! The only thing is that I wish the mushroom dish had a bigger portion because it's more of a side dish portion.
Calling all Ramen lovers-- if you're in New York and want to enjoy some fantastic ramen then Tonchin is the place to go! I had the spicy tan tan ramen and it was spectacular. The cashews in it was a very nice touch. The atmosphere was very chill and the service was great! Definitely recommend!
Excellent! The broth was rich and deep in flavor. The noodles were cooked perfectly. I sat at the bar. I also made a reservation. This place gets jammed. Was by myself so couldn't get everything I wanted. Will go back for sure.
Great food and service, did not disappoint. No wait time. I had not tried the shave ice before and didn't realize it is ENORMOUS. We barely finished it between two people, would be better for 3-4. Was delicious though. I was also very impressed with the vegan options. Would love to come back.
Best tonkatsu ramen I've ever had. Better than Ippudo and Ichiran. The broth is rich but not too salty. The mango shaved ice is the BEST. Highly recommend the shaved ice and so glad they had it at lunch. It's a small place so make a reservation . Friday late lunch time at 2pm wasn't too busy.
Umami, crunchy, savory and delicious - let this bowl of delicious broth transport you to different universe. The attentive service at the bar when coming in for a quick lunch - perfect for winter - literally feels like a warm hug. Noodles have the perfect bite, everything is perfectly balanced. The cucumber salad entre is amazing.
A Ramen Destination Worth Every Visit Tonchin New York delivers exactly what it promises: exceptional ramen that justifies the trip on its own. This is a restaurant that knows its strength and executes it beautifully. The ramen here is phenomenal—truly 5/5. Each bowl showcases careful attention to flavor and balance. The house ramen features a wonderfully robust pork broth that manages to be both deeply flavorful and surprisingly light, never leaving you feeling weighed down. If you prefer some heat, the spicy tan tan offers a delicious nuttiness with a satisfying kick that builds nicely without overwhelming the other flavors. While the appetizers and desserts are solid, they’re supporting players to the main event. One miss: the potato crab salad didn’t quite land and can be safely skipped in favor of saving room for more ramen. The restaurant rounds out the experience with great ambiance and attentive service, making for an all-around excellent dining experience. Come for the ramen, stay for the atmosphere, and leave planning your next visit
Tonchin is a must try in New York. The wings are spicy but delicious. The bun is so good. I could eat another. The broth for the ramen is not very salty or greasy. Delicious. It’s best to book a table.. if you wait for walk-in, there’s a time limit. The place is moderately noisy. There’s baskets underneath the chairs to put your jackets. The server is great. She explains to us the different types of noodles that they offer. Original is best.
What an amazing experience and place! We loved this place and the food. Also, service was over the top in its simplicity but attention. They took care of us and they were all nice with great recommendations and also, taking the time to answer to some of our curious questions. Especially, the Japanese server (I think Yu)… he was extraordinary and made us become passionate about ramen and Japanese food. Going to the food… the “Chashu” Rice ball was delicious; the “Tsukune” ban was yummy and I wished I got more; we love the “Gyoza”… among the best I have ever had in the city; the “Tonchin Classic Tokyo Tonkotsu” was very delicious and I couldn’t stop eating it… my wife got the “Dipping noodles - Original Tsukemen” and they were also amazing!!! Finally, the “Mango Kaki-gori” was a nice surprise. The place it is minimalistic, but very cozy. We had great time and we will definitely keep going there any time we are in NYC. Tonchin… well done and keep going!!!
Tonchin absolutely delivered. The cucumber with the miso glaze? Ridiculously good — the kind of dish you think about later like, “Damn, I should’ve ordered two.” We hit happy hour and the whiskey highballs were spot-on, crisp and easy. The chicken noodle dish was amazing, full of flavor and super satisfying. Service was great the whole time — attentive without hovering. Highly recommend this spot for anyone who wants legit comfort food done right.
Busy, but worth the wait. Walk-in, had to wait for maybe 10 minutes by the bar. Waiting was made easy by super friendly bartender. Signature ramen was absolutely worth it , plus the cucumber salad and gyoza. Deep but not heavy , thin slices of pork , lovely texture of noodles, and super smiling staff. All the best to Tonchin crew from Norway!
Tonchin absolutely delivers one of the best ramen experiences in the city! From the moment the bowls arrive, you can tell each one is crafted with care -- rich, flavorful broth, perfectly cooked noodles, and fresh, vibrant toppings that bring everything together beautifully. Every bite is balanced, comforting, and deeply satisfying without feeling heavy.
Stumbled upon this place and it does remind me a little bit of Tokyo! The TSUKUNE bao was very flavorful. Even though the ramen were about $21-$22 it was still good. The thing that surprised me was how tender the roasted chasu pork was. You can tell the restaurant stayed busy but even as a walk in, the wait was 15-20 min. I would say 8.5 out of 10
Amazing Japanese ramen spot! Super humble yet definitely not low-key — it has received Michelin recommendations for 5 years in a row. We went for lunch during our visit to New York, and the value was incredible. For just $27, you get a starter and a main, including their classic tonkotsu ramen. Hearty soup and super generous portion of noodle which can be rare for ramen places. There are also other great options (some with a small extra cost). Highly recommend trying the Tsukemen as well — perfectly chewy noodles (served hot or cold) paired with a rich, concentrated dipping broth. Absolutely delicious! The restaurant is located right in the heart of Midtown, making it very easy to walk to from nearby tourist attractions. If you’re in town, don’t miss this place! We did walk-in on a weekday 10min after opening time. The restaurant can get busier so reservations are highly recommended for popular times (I.e weekends).
Tonchin delivered a fantastic ramen experience. The dipping noodles were generous in portion and the broth was rich, authentic, and full of flavor. Service was excellent — friendly, accommodating, and unlike many other NYC spots, we never felt rushed. It made for a really comfortable dining experience. Definitely worth booking in advance if you want to secure a spot. Highly recommend dining here when in New York.
Walked in on a Friday night, had a 25 min wait. The edamame was a taste of Asian and Western fusion, I was a little surprised at first but it was delicious. The salad, I really LOVED their homemade dressing (as someone who hates salad dressing). The curry chicken wings were nice, really juicy but a little bit too salty. The matcha lemonade was great, not overly sweet like other places, and the waiter pours the matcha on top in front of me. To be honest, I enjoyed everything else more than the ramen, ironic cuz it’s a ramen place). The ramen is not bad, but just mediocre, so it didn’t really stand out from the others. The place is pretty popular so it was pretty packed and noisy, a little hard to hear people talk.
Overall rating: 4.3 Price: $94 w/ tax & tip Ok, okay I didn’t want to give a low rating. But the service I experienced was rough. Given I was solo, I manage to snag a reso at 6pm on a Wednesday. This place seems impossible to get a seat, so when I arrived a few minutes late and the hostess told me I still only have 90 minutes. I was like okay. Items I ordered: - Japanese 75 $19 5/5 good - Tsukune Buns $16 1/5 the buns were barely buns, very thin, not doughy. The slaw overpowered the bun. - Smoked Dashi Ramen $22 5/5 solid dish, I was willing to overlook the terrible bao buns until my next experience - Matcha Shaved Ice $18 5/5 this is good but getting it took 20 minutes with no clear ETA. Also a group activity. Very large for solo. When the shaved ice was taking long, I had to ask a few times on where it is because I was nearing my time limit. When they said there was issues with the machine, I said it was okay but they’d have to let the hostess know. They said it was okay and after another 10 min, they said the staff was doing Ramadan so some haven’t been able to make it & it will just be a few more. Like that’s fine, but at this point I was expecting them to comp it. They did not. And it arrived another 10 minutes later. Other people at the bar had the same delay but they ordered much later than me. The wild part is after all of this, the manager was yelling at the host literally right in front of us for booking. Like, take that outside or in the staff area. It was an uncomfortable position. I live in Brooklyn and know better ramen places with better service closer to me. So I won’t be going back and I’m telling you this isn’t worth it for the price & service.
The tonkotsu ramen was great, definitely recommended. As was the miso ginger ramen, a nice vegetarian option. Everything else was good, but nothing you *must* try. I first tried the smoked dashi ramen, but it was too seafoody for my taste, so I asked to swap it. Since it was just a preference issue, the waiter didn’t comp it, fair enough. The tebasaki wings were good but nothing special, just typical MSG-style wings, not really worth ordering “just to try”. The strawberry shaved ice was simple but tasty, with fresh strawberry flavor and a bit of whipped cream on top.
I think the food was pretty good but the place is a bit overhyped. The appetizers we ordered, the gyozas and the dumplings were both excellent. Flavorful peppers and juicy gyozas. However, the ramens were just ok. I didn't love the smoked dashi I ordered, and while the tonkatsu was better, it was far from the best and there are plenty of better options in NYC. Also didn't love that they were really trying to get us to leave after we were done with our noodles.
Service was just an average and food came out slowly. (If you are inrush, this is not the ideal place for a lunch) The amount of foods were pretty small but the taste was above average I guess. Tonchin salad was tasty with miso based dressing, and soy sauce based Tebasaki was crisp and delicious. The overall vibe was casual dining and the price was also reasonable :)
Food was delicious. Went as a group of 2 with no reservation. We were told it would be a 45 minute wait, but only waited 15 minutes. We were sat next to each other rather than opposite to each other at a long table. It was hard to get the attention of some of the staff, but once you got them, they were so incredibly kind and helpful. The lighting was not great so you'll have trouble taking pictures of the food
I recently met up with a friend to try the much raved Tonchin Ramen. In my opinion, the ramen was decent, though for my taste, the soup base leaned a bit salty. By the halfway point, I found myself reaching for several cups of water. Service was efficient, though perhaps a bit too quick-paced for a leisurely catch-up. We noticed our table being wiped down right after they took our bowl away, which gave the impression of having us close the bill asap. Other than that the atmosphere and decor is comfortable and the music was not loud. Would be nice if we were not rushed throughout the whole experience.
I had a wonderful experience at Tonchin New York! Food: The ramen was absolutely delicious—rich broth and perfectly cooked noodles. I also loved the unique toppings that added depth to the dish. However, I felt the appetizer could have been a bit more flavorful. Service: The staff was friendly and attentive, ensuring our drinks were always full and checking in on us regularly, which made for a pleasant dining experience. Atmosphere: The ambiance was cozy and inviting, perfect for a relaxed meal. The decor has a nice touch that makes it feel special yet unpretentious. Overall, Tonchin is a great spot for anyone craving quality ramen in a comfortable setting. I would definitely return!
Tried the two vegan main dishes on the menu - the miso ginger ramen which was amazing (5 ⭐️) and the ban ban kinoko which was okay-ish (you might like it if you love mushrooms). In the starter, edamame was really good as well! Overall the vibe of the place is great and ramen is worth the hype!
This is some gooood ramen. I went after work with some friends visiting NYC, around 5:30pm on a Tuesday, and it was busyyy. Luckily, they had a table open for 3, but we only had 45 minutes to eat since they had a table reserved for 6pm. I hate being rushed but this ramen was so dang good I didn't mind scarfing it down. My only qualm is the staff reminded us of our remaining time every 10 min or so. 1 1000% understand the importance of making sure your guests leave on team so the table can be cleared and set for the next party, but it was a bit excessive this time. It didn't ruin our experience and meal, but felt it was important to mention!
🍜 Really love the noodles here — they’re firmer and chewier than most ramen places, which is exactly the texture I’m into. The broth? So rich and flavorful, every sip feels like a warm hug. And whether it’s their regular ramen or the dipping noodles, they all hit the spot. don’t miss their signature fried chicken. Crispy, juicy, addictive. Trust me on this one.
The classic tonkotsu ramen was fantastic. The broth is rich and slightly smoky. The shaved ice (kaki-goori) was ok, it’s a very large portion but would be better a little less fancy and closer to the real thing. Besides the bit of cream and anko, it was a bit bland. It would have been better soaked with condensed milk as is usual in Japan.
Lunch special for me, $28. Started with the tsukune (chicken “meatball” bun) very tasty. I got the spicy Dan Dan Ramen, which was flavorful and delicious, the noodles were cooked to perfection, and the broth had just the right amount of spice. The place has a kind of basic/funky vibe, servers were very nice and efficient and the place was quite busy at lunchtime.
Came to try this Michelin recommended ramen spot. Ramen was pretty good however, personally the highlight of my meal was the Kakigori dessert. Service was good. Interior was nice but tables were a bit close to each other. Also, highly recommend making a reservation as it does get busy.
The gyoza were unimpressive in my opinion — they lacked a strong pork flavor and the sauce didn’t pair very well with them. However, I was here for the ramen. The ramen broth was delicious, very rich, and deep in flavor. The biggest gripe I had was with the thickness of the chashu. Genuinely so disappointing that the tonkotsu featured three thin pieces of pork. There were a few delicious bamboo shoots also in the ramen which added a new textural element which was appreciated. To be honest, I wouldn’t come here again for just the ramen — I believe there are better spots in the city. But if you’re looking for a cure date night spot with decent ramen, this is the perfect place.
I don’t quite get the hype. Let’s start with the food: their signature Tonkatsu ramen was way too salty. I wasn’t the only one either as I noticed that people around me were emptying their water glasses fast. Which brings me to the second issue: the service. It felt rushed & not once did anyone check in during the entire meal. The only thing I kind of enjoyed was the green lemonade, but even that: $12 or $ 13 for a matcha-flavored lemonade? Not really worth it.
Went into the restaurant with some strict standards. The tonkotsu ramen was extremely dashi forward, which is odd for a pork broth. The dashi was potentially over cooked too, because there was a slightly metallic finish at the end of the bite. The chashu seasoning did not fully penetrate through, so there was a little gaminess. The eel handroll was decent, but overcharred/burnt. If it's even slightly burnt, the metallic taste overpowers the rest. Gyoza was decent. Good attempt but I expected more from such a highly regarded ramen shop.
I have been so excited to try this place after seeing tik Toks and reviews and I was so underwhelmed and disappointed. I reserved and got in right away. Sat at bar but did not drink..none of cocktails screamed at me. I got lunch special with the salad. And sad to say the salad was the best thing about my visit. Their ginger dressing is very good. I actually asked for more and got a side of dressing to take. The ramen was meh. I added spice but it was not spicy at all. The pork looks like thinly sliced ham you get at the deli. Was not a fan at all. The egg was perfect. Broth ok. Noodles were thick and curly. I asked. For thin noodle but was not able to change it. I got spicy wings to go for my new Yorker fiance'. He actually described them as "trash". I had high hopes for this place but left highly disappointed. New York has other ramen spots that blow this place away. Service was good.
It was overall a decent experience but felt overrated. NOTE: We had a vegetarian/vegan dining experience here. The vegan ramen was just average - I've had far better in too many other spots to think highly of this one. The composition, flavor profile, and mix of ingredients was not balanced. Noodles were barely lukewarm. The service was also mid. What's worse is they let people confirm reservation but not required them to show up on time. There were tables empty inside only for the booked party to show up 30 mins late while we waited
I was craving dipping-style ramen and heard that this place used to be Michelin-recommended. After trying it, the taste turned out quite ordinary. The dipping sauce lacked complexity, consisting mostly of oil and salty. Overall, the flavor was unremarkable and plain—not an authentic or standout dish.
I had the tonkotsu ramen. The taste was not bad but 3 of us agreed it was way too salty, to the point that it was difficult to eat towards the end. Also didn’t really like the noodles. The one who had the spicy ramen said even packaged instant ramen is better. It’s not terrible but I’m not sure how this place is Michelin.
TLDR: decent ramen that was unfortunately just too oily 3.5 stars I like a good tonkotsu ramen but this ramen was just too oily. I usually like drinking the soup but the initial spoonful of soup coated my mouth with a thin layer of oil. The rest of the ramen was good but being unable to enjoy the broth on its own really hampered the experience.
I was here couple days ago as it is listed in the Michelin Guide. However, the taste of the ramen, the rice roll and the bun were not as good as I thought, especially with the qualification. The broth was oily and was not hot enough. The noodles were a little too soggy. Overall, I am disappointed and will not come again. The environment is nice and clean.
definitely make a reservation! we tried to walk in at 5pm and it was a 1.5 hour wait, so we made a resy for the next day! the front gets congested & a bit chaotic as the restaurant is quite busy! but once seated, service is quick and friendly. ramen noodles had a nice bite to it, but the broth wasn’t as complex as i’d like. the baos were unique but overall, everything was a bit too fusion-y despite the great presentation.
Tonchin Midtown delivers the same modern, Tokyo-inspired atmosphere the brand is known for — stylish, lively, and full of energy. Compared to the Brooklyn location, this one definitely feels more polished. The unagi roll and ramen were both delicious and beautifully presented — rich flavors, well-balanced broth, and great texture on the noodles. You can tell the kitchen takes pride in its craft. That said, the service felt distant and a bit mechanical, which was disappointing, especially when you expect the warmth and attentiveness of Japanese hospitality. Overall, it’s a solid spot for quality ramen in Midtown, but I hope the service one day matches the heart that’s clearly in the food.
The food was flavorful and unique – especially the ramen, which had a rich and well-balanced taste. Unfortunately, the noodles were only lukewarm when served, and the portion size felt quite small for the price. Seating was also very cramped – tables were so close together that it felt uncomfortable. As soon as we finished eating, the bill was brought to our table without asking, which felt a bit rushed. Most uncomfortable, though, was the pressure to leave a higher tip – the staff insisted on it in a way that felt pushy and inappropriate. While the flavors were memorable, the overall experience left a bad impression.
The worst dining experience I’ve ever had. I arrived at 5:10 PM and was told they couldn’t seat me until my partner came. When he showed up 15 minutes later, the front desk said our table was gone and told us to wait another 40 minutes. We finally got a text saying our table was ready, but still waited again before being seated — in the most cramped corner possible. I literally couldn’t move my arm without hitting the wall. It felt disrespectful and racism. The front desk person was doing cleaning and wiping tables between seating people — no wonder everything was such a mess. The manager came over after I complained, talked in circles for five minutes, and explained absolutely nothing. The food was bland, the ramen tasted like instant noodles, and the staff cleared our plates while we were still eating. Even paying the bill took forever. I wasted more than an hour just waiting for everything — a table, the food, the bill, and some basic respect. The worst dining experience I’ve ever had.
