Opinions de Tonga Hut North Hollywood
Great little tiki dive. Limited indoor seating but the host does great at getting you in if something opens up. No food but there is a taco stand outside. Some unique cocktails, some tiki classics. Lots of potential here, would love to see a written rum list available
Los Angeles oldest tiki bar! Entrance is in the back, not facing victory Great drinks, great prices, plenty of seating (make a reservation if you want a booth inside on a weekend, or if you're coming in with a bunch of people) No food for sale inside but Durangos tacos is right by the entrance and you can bring in outside food Dog friendly, they'll get loved on and given snacks 👌🏽 Depending on the bartenders on deck they might have a daily rotating special or two written down inside on the board, haven't had a bad special yet!
Ive read about this place and it didn't disappoint. We were there for some afternoon tiki and between the awesome decor. The music and bartender it really put a smile on my face
I had a bad experience here a couple years ago. But after my most recent visit things changed. Bartender Graham was amazing he was very knowledgeable of his mixology. Made some amazing drinks that night. One of the bar tenders sat with is and had a drink and talked it up after his shift. This time I felt comfortable and enjoyed my visit. Came on a slower night so service was great. Got pretty tipsy and felt great. Will be back soon.
Tonga Hut transcends the category of “bar” to become an anthropology of Polynesian kitsch and cocktail ritual. It is a meticulously maintained cultural artifact, one whose aesthetic syntax—moody red lighting, hand-carved Tiki motifs, and a tinge of Hollywood noir—draws its patrons not merely to drink, but to belong to a lineage of tiki aficionados. Here, the act of ordering a Navy Grog or Original Zombie is performative, a rite conducted at the altar of Donn Beach and Trader Vic. The bartenders—often named with a familiarity that lends counsel as well as mixology—guide each transaction like seasoned hosts in a sacred lounge . It is exactly this paradox—of knowledge wrapped in leisure, of historicism without pretense—that makes Tonga Hut exceptional. It invites you to surrender to its stylized gravity. The décor whispers stories; the cocktails, when properly prepared, deliver them.
Oldest Tiki bar in LA, best Tiki bar in LA. Really, once you start going here, you get kinda spoiled from the quality. The quality of crafting drinks here is above and beyond any other Tiki bar I’ve ever been to. The atmosphere is classic ideal Tiki bar, a mix between Polynesian and a dive. The service here is truly reflective of how you act. If you’re chill, they’re chill. If you’re friendly, they’re friendly. They have the Grog log, 76 tiki drinks to finish in a year, which is fun and keeps you involved. I only hope that one day they can put everyone’s names on the Grog log wall, because that’s the hugest draw and gives this place personality!
The oldest tiki bar in LA. If your looking for expertly crafted tiki drinks at a reasonable price in a historic establishment, this is your place. The old skool zombie will knock you down and tastes amazing. If your a true aficionado attempt to do the grog log... It has a wide variety of drinks. Some are amazing some are a bit tough. Favorite Tiki location in LA
I've been coming to this place since the late 90's / early 2000's, so I've seen this place morph into the awesomeness that it is today! But then again, I've always liked this spot. The staff is amazing and very welcoming! The drinks are prepped with care and they take a mixology approach to cocktails, which is why you can taste the quality! The interior creates the feeling of pure escapism, and anywhere you sit within this location is awesome! There is no operating kitchen, but there is a taco vendor on-site that offers some pretty tasty treats, and they come to the area where you're seated, should you want to place an order. Check the calendar, as they sometimes host special events, and also for days and times of operation. Perhaps plan ahead and make a reservation, just in case, but they do accommodate walk-ups. This place is a must for all tiki enthusiasts and non tiki enthusiasts! Stop in, have a cocktail, take a load off and loose yourself in an awesome setting! The entrance is located in the rear, and street parking is available, this place is always a good time, check it out!
As LA's oldest Tiki Bar, the history is worth the visit. We went at opening on a weekend as we didn't have much time to visit but we did enjoy our brief time. The inside is nicely decorated and drinks were very good. Order at the bar, then take your drink back to your assigned area/seats. For tiki mug collectors, there are some nice mugs they have on occasion to add to your collection.
I recently had the pleasure of visiting the Tonga Hut tiki bar, and I must say, the experience was absolutely fantastic. From the moment I stepped through the doors, I was captivated by the vibrant atmosphere and the warm, welcoming ambiance. First and foremost, the service at Tonga Hut was truly exceptional. The staff members were friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about their craft. They took the time to recommend drinks based on my preferences and were happy to answer any questions I had. Their genuine enthusiasm and passion for tiki culture made the entire evening even more enjoyable. Now, let's talk about the drinks. Tonga Hut's drink menu is an absolute delight for any tiki enthusiast. The selection of cocktails is extensive, and each drink is expertly crafted with the perfect balance of flavors. The bartenders are true masters of their craft, skillfully mixing and garnishing the drinks with precision. Not only were the cocktails visually stunning, but they also packed a punch. The drinks were strong, as any good tiki drink should be, leaving me feeling delightfully buzzed and thoroughly satisfied. The atmosphere at Tonga Hut is nothing short of top-notch. The bar is adorned with unique and authentic tiki decor, creating an immersive tropical paradise. From the enchanting lighting to the meticulously designed Polynesian-inspired interior, every detail has been carefully curated to transport you to an exotic getaway. The soothing sounds of classic tiki tunes added to the overall ambiance, completing the experience. Overall, my visit to Tonga Hut was an absolute delight. The combination of exceptional service, strong and delicious drinks, and the captivating atmosphere make this tiki bar a true gem. Whether you're a seasoned tiki aficionado or someone looking for a memorable night out, I wholeheartedly recommend Tonga Hut. Prepare to be transported to a world of tropical bliss as you sip on expertly crafted cocktails and bask in the warm embrace of tiki culture. I cannot wait to return to Tonga Hut and continue exploring their extensive menu while enjoying the unparalleled hospitality. It truly is a tiki experience like no other
I love this bar and its my to go to. Service and staff are always super friendly. Cocktails are always consistent. Never had a bad thing to say until recently, please bring back your servers. Standing in line 20 to 30 minutes for a cocktail is not cool. I made reservations to spend time with my friends, not to spend my time standing in line for a cocktail. Or maybe add 2 bartenders if you want to keep the line method. We kept waiting for the line to go down, it never did. We got in our cars and drove to another tiki bar 9 minutes away where they had servers for faster service. Tonga hut, I love you guys. Just please, please bring back your servers or have 2 bartenders so the line can move faster. Still my to go to bar, but definitely will rethink in the future if I want to stand in line for a cocktail or go to another bar for faster service. Let me do add, I don't mind standing in line for a bit for a cocktail, but when the line is long and there's only one bartender that really slows down service. Maybe you guys were short staffed that night and thats understandable, just leaving this review so others can be aware of the wait times and plan accordingly.
The inside of Tonga Hut is what I picture when I imagine a tiki bar. The outside is in a strip mall, and the entrance is on the back side. It is very dark inside with loud music and red lights, the decorations are very Hawaiian themed. The drinks were very good and very strong. Mike took good care of us. Would recommend visiting the oldest operating tiki bar in LA! We did not have a reservation, just walked in with no wait.
The place is very dim lighted inside. The drinks can be good but be careful some can taste a little off. Especially if you don't like licorice. The nutty chi chi is good. Service kinda sucks. Takes forever to get the drinks but still an ok spot. They allow fury friends. We will try this spot again
Alright. Decore is awesome. What we didn't know ow is parties bigger than 5 get to sit outdoors in the alley. Feels like the front lines in Ukraine under a cammo netting. Not what we expected. I also visited Tonga Palm Springs 2 days prior. Hollywood has more mugs, PS didn't or they were cheap generic.
Unfortunately, I do have mixed feelings about this bar. Especially on weekends location gets very crowded. And the interior is unable to hold the amount of people who are there. During the weekday, it’s a little bit better, but even on the typical weeknight, there is still not enough seating inside that several people have to sit outside. The location is on their best to create a appropriate atmosphere outside but it’s still just doesn’t have the magic that the interior has. I guess that’s like most locations think trader Sam’s at Disneyland. When you go on a night when more senior bartenders are there. The drinks are very good. I definitely recommend Saturday night. Interior is pretty. I think the seating really needs to be a priority to expand in this location. The Palm Springs location is the location where food is offered. But this location does not have a kitchen. The experience itself is something to do if you are a Los Angeles native, but I would probably suggest a different location if you are not.
Reviewing just to give you a heads up: now mostly bar line instead of table service, which can mean 30+ minutes standing in line for a drink. I don’t mind the wait, but standing around crowding up the room all that time is not the vibe. Painkiller was painfully over sweet and bartender was not very friendly. Not the Tonga hut experience of days past :(
I just wanted to leave a review, purely for whoever the loser that was security there. We were there on a non crowded night. We had multiple tables reserved, and I can say with full confidence everyone was orderly and non disruptive. This guy comes up and yells at us, for quite literally no reason. Ask one of our friends if he wants to step outside???? Extremely rude, disrespectful, and out of line. I honestly don’t want to go back because I don’t want to deal with this type of disrespect.
Dear Management, I am writing to express my disappointment regarding a recent visit to your tiki bar, which unfortunately fell far short of the standard of service I have consistently experienced over the past five-plus years. I have been a loyal customer and have always enjoyed excellent service, professional bartenders, and well-made drinks. That is why this experience was particularly upsetting. During my visit, I ordered a drink I have ordered many times before. After tasting it, I politely mentioned that it seemed to be missing a few ingredients. The bartender, Ian, responded by saying, “We don’t make it like that,” despite the fact that this drink has always been prepared the same way during my many prior visits. When I calmly explained this, he became visibly irritated and stated that the ingredients were “optional.” While he eventually remade the drink, his attitude was dismissive and unwelcoming, which made the interaction uncomfortable. What was even more concerning happened afterward. When I returned to the bar with my friends, Ian stated that he did not want to serve them anymore, claiming they had “given him attitude” and needed to leave. This was extremely surprising and upsetting. None of us were rude or confrontational, and no behavior occurred that would justify refusing service. As we were walking out, the hostess laughed at us. This was salt in the wound and felt deeply disrespectful. Regardless of what had occurred earlier, this behavior was completely uncalled for and further reinforced how unwelcome we were made to feel. This is not how loyal patrons should be treated—especially those who have supported your establishment for years and considered it their go-to bar. As a result, I did not enjoy my time, and sadly, this experience makes me question whether I will return. It is very disappointing to feel pushed out of a place I’ve always loved, and I believe this situation reflects poorly on what has otherwise been an excellent establishment. I hope you take this feedback seriously and address it internally so future customers do not have a similar experience. - Tikigods
Here’s a revised version with that line added and the tone maintained: ⸻ ⭐️ 1 Star — If I could give zero, I would. The Tonga Room on Victory Blvd is an absolute joke — the antithesis of a tiki bar. The disaster started before we even got inside. Our group of four — all over 50 — got stuck at the entrance because they demanded IDs and “confirmed reservations,” as if we were trying to breach some exclusive nightclub. All we wanted was one drink and a little tiki fun in the Valley. Nope! Once past the door gauntlet, things didn’t improve. The place has no vibe, no charm, nothing even remotely resembling a real tiki atmosphere. It feels like a corporate committee skimmed a Pinterest board and called it a day. The service? Brutally bad. The staff moves like drones stuck in a corporate training loop — unhelpful, expressionless, and bound to a list of policies that make zero sense for a place that’s supposed to be fun. Ask a simple question, get a scripted response. Ask for anything beyond the script, get a hard “no.” Between the nonsense at the entrance, the lifeless, robotic service, and the complete failure to deliver even a hint of tiki spirit, the Tonga Room is just… bad. A real bummer. Save yourself the disappointment and go literally anywhere else.
Beware they won’t let you in an hour before closing. Arrived at 12:18am and tried to order one round before closed and were turned away saying they had done last call. I understand last call but over 40 minutes before closing time esp when we spent a ton of money on Ubers to make it out here is crazy. We even asked politely saying we just wanted one quick round, there’s only 3 of us, and we’d spent $50 on Ubers to try them. They said “no exceptions” and turned us away. Used to love this place until i experienced the worst and laziest customer service ever :(
