Humberto's is a popular spot for massive, flavorful burritos and carne asada fries. Customers rave about the generous portions, fresh ingredients, and tasty salsas. Some note the lack of guacamole/sour cream in the California burrito and inconsistent chicken.

Very good fish taco great portion for combos
One of the best breakfast burritos in San Diego IMO, bacon breakfast burrito add potato. Crispy bacon and melted cheese.
Went here last week after work to grab some tacos and it was a pretty solid experience overall. The place had a relaxed, casual vibe and wasn’t overly loud, which I liked. I ordered a couple of tacos and a side, and everything came out fairly quick. The tacos were fresh and filling, not overloaded but not skimpy either. Flavors were balanced, nothing too spicy, which worked for me. Staff was polite and checked in once or twice without being pushy. Prices felt reasonable for the portion size. It’s not trying to be fancy or trendy, just a reliable taco spot. I’d come back again when I’m in the area and want something simple and satisfying.
I ordered one of each taco. They’re all pretty good but our favorite was carnitas with fish coming in as a close second. The green salsa is delicious (I like a lot of citrus so I added some more lime juice). Customer service is great and the portions are generous. Humberto’s is a solid choice.
A humble small seating configuration might make you overlook this absolute gem. Food seemed fresh, came off RIPPING hot, and was considerably larger than expected and that flavors were on point on my California burrito. The red and verde sauce were bright and vibrant, and they gave me more than enough without prompting. The cashier was attentive, friendly, and quick. Were I local, I'd be hitting this place often. I literally came here 10 minutes after another great meal in the neighborhood and still felt the value was there and food was great.
Not your average carne asada taco! The beef was seasoned so well you can taste it amongst the other ingredients in the taco. The amount was very generous as well, I ordered the two taco plate and it felt more like four tacos. The beans and rice were delicious as well. Another favorite factor was their red sauce, I’m a fiend for a red/orange sauce and they delivered!
By far the best in San Diego! This is where the locals go! The chicken enchiladas were good, but the carne asada chips-supreme left us awestruck!😍 The salsas are also to die for! I brought the leftovers all the way back to the east coast! This is my go to spot from now on. Friends have raved for years; I finally get it! I ordered via DoorDash- service and delivery were quick/reasonable & the food was still piping hot!
I've been wanting to try this place for a long time but could never make the time to get here. They did not disappoint. I ordered the carne asada burrito and it was really, really good. The burrito was big enough to split between two people or to make two meals. I did split mine and had the second half of the burrito the next night for dinner. Tasted even better reheated. The carne asada was a nice cut of meat, cooked tender and perfectly marinated, no gristle. The rest of the ingredients were super fresh. The parking situation is very tight in this area, especially at lunch time, but if you're lucky enough to get a space inside their parking lot, it's all covered with solar panels, so it's shaded! A big bonus for a downtown fast casual eatery. I'll definitely be coming back to try other popular Humberto's suggestions.
This is theeeee spot for carne asada fries! I saw a review they were the best so I had to try them for myself and they are so good!! The salsas are hot and so tasty and the beans are it!! They are cooked smooth and I absolutely loved them. Definitely a great spot for the cali style burritos and fries. I'll be back!
Solid Mexican food option with freshly cooked food. It’s really well delivered with good portion sizes and good meat ratios on their portions. Only reason for eating it 4 is that it’s not fine dining type Mexican food such as el agave but more typical street food and grab and go type meals.
Having visited this location multiple times, I can confidently say it's one of the best “bertos” in the area. Despite being consistently busy, the service remains impressively quick. The staff manages the rush efficiently, with minimal wait times. As for the food, it never disappoints. The portions are generous, and the prices are reasonable considering the quality and quantity. Overall, it's a great Mexican spot for satisfying cravings without breaking the bank!
Came here for the first time on a whim to try their CA burrito and fish tacos. My mom gave fish tacos 9/10. I loved how much beef was in my CA burrito vs. fries. However, it did not come with guacamole, only shredded cheese and a bit of pico de gallo, so it was dry. Ate a bunch of red sauce with it to wash it down. I would come back and order it with guac next time. Customer service was very friendly. No public restroom. I definitely feel this place is one of the better ones in terms of portion, flavor, and price.
This place was recommended to me to try to satisfy my carne asada fries cravings. After a full day walking around SDCC, this place satisfied my cravings It’s definitely that old school hole in the wall type place. Small, order the counter with limited indoor seating. Parking can be difficult in the tiny lot and you may have to rely on street parking. Staff is great, very friendly, accommodating and helpful We got carne asada fries in small size for $14 which was enough for two meals. Love the skinny fries they use. Good portions of fries, guacamole, sour cream, and of course protein. Also go chicken enchilada and rolled tacos (forgot to take a picture bc we were hungry. Rolled tacos were just okay, nothing special. Chicken enchilada was delicious and not overly salty. Not a fan of their guac, it’s just too runny for my preference. It’s too much like a sauce Red sauce has a good kick, green sauce has too cilantro for my liking It’s a good place, would try the tacos next time, but their carne asada fries are great
Flavor: B+ Service: A Tea: F Solo dining: A When my Lyft driver said this was one of her favorite taco shops and she’d never driven a tourist there, I knew I was in for a treat. Per her suggestion, I got the carne asada fries with a tortilla on the side. So I made my own burrito for the best of both worlds. The meat is flavorful and plentiful and it’s a great concoction. It needed more sauce and the salsa was a little spicy for me (but I’m a wimp on the heat) so that’s the only reason I can’t give it an A. The drink selection is very limited - mostly cans. It’s a lot of food for a reasonable price (which is a rarity in San Diego) so be ready to chow down.
California Burritos should have sour cream and guacamole standard and never pico. Places started adding pico in the late 90's and started subtracting sour cream and guacamole in the early 2000's. This issue is even further exasperated with Carne Asada Fries which remains correct, but less known as one of our San Diego originals. Here is what I don't get. If I ordered carne asada chips and the chips were as soggy as the carne asada fries get and really bring down the experience I'd make the fries crispy every time. Since they don't do that here or if you don't want to order it crispy because sometimes they aren't nice about it I end up getting chips. If my rolled tacos were as soft as the fries get I'd be mad, so why is it a staple if it's got such flaws. I think it's a mix of experience and nostalgia. Late night drunk nights for native San Diegans go a long way and that old word of mouth does too, but ultimately it's mid if were talking just food. The carne asada is plentiful, seasoned, but dry because it's prechopped from a bin, not cooked to order, not chopped to order. Without the sour creama and guac it's dryness is amplified. When on the CAF get it under the cheese to help keep it from drying out. Some cooks will do this, but not all. Sometimes the cooks/staff are snarky on requests like extra salsa roja. So many other places don't skimp on the sauces and charge less for better ambiance, service and fix alot of other issues Humbertos has, so it's really become mid to me. The fish burrito is filled with mostly cabbage and pico and the fish has no flavor. The cabeza burrito is hella greasy, but delicious. I've been getting the CAF sub adobaba and extra crispy if they'll even let me. Or if I'm in the mood I'll do adobara and shirmp fries. Their tortillas are soft, warm and don't need the foil wrap like some places. pliable with good chew. Interior and decor is forgettable. It's not in the greatest area. It's not the cleanest place with mediocre amenities. Service is hit or miss, but definitely not friendly. Someitmes they'll do my customizations and sometimes they wont. Tipping more than the usual 20% doesn't sway they either. I basically have to talk them into believing me that I know what I'm ordering and I'm not just a customer who wont notice if they make it regular degular becuase they think they have clout. Prices were great until end of 2022, when things went up, but not across the board and not all the items went up proportionally. Sure when eggs were scares I get the breakfast burritos going up, but then they started skimping on the sausages along with the egg price jump, come on guys.
Humberto’s Taco Shop definitely feels like an authentic Mexican spot, and it’s one of those places everyone mentions when talking about a California burrito. We came specifically to try that. The tortilla was actually really good and tasted fresh, but overall the food didn’t fully live up to the hype for us. The fries were a bit soggy and the burrito itself felt kind of plain. The place was also a little dirty, but to be fair, we weren’t expecting anything fancy or upscale. This is more of a quick, no-frills taco shop. Overall, it’s not a bad spot, just not one I’d personally go back to if I’m really craving a great California burrito. That said, I can still see why people like it, especially if you’re nearby and want something quick and casual.
The service was fast, the California burrito was good and a decent size but it doesn't come with guac or sour cream. I added it to 2 burritos and paid $32... Super expensive for two burritos. The lady who helped me though was super nice.
I ordered a chile relleno burrito and got burnt chiles that were drenched in old oil. I called 3x and no answer. It tasted terrible and even using napkins to get rid of some of oil wasn’t edible. Dissatisfied and disappointed. Would never go back.
