Opinions de Hong Wah Chinese Restaurant Penfield
Love this place for Chinese. Staff is very attentive. They're lunch specials are cheap and delicious. They have more of a dine in experience than most Chinese restaurants. The menu is your standard American Chinese. I wouldn't say any of the food is outstanding, but it's all good.
The atmosphere is nice quiet and very friendly. The staff treats you nicely and are very helpful. The food is very yummy and well priced. My new Asian cuisine place. So fantastic.
I was craving a meal of really good tasting Chinese food and once again I was not disappointed in my combo meal I ate at Hong Wah! Very fresh vegetables and chicken in the dish and my egg roll was delicious as well. This is always my "go to" restaurant!
The best chinese restaurant in Rochester! The place is clean, quiet and the service is always on point. The food is fantastic and always tastes freshly prepared. I've been coming here for years and highly recommend to anyone who has never been.
Great scallop and shrimp dishes and chicken entrees, Kung pao chicken was good too. Egg rolls were ok and spring rolls have a lot of lettuce but great sauce
Service is courteous and lighting fast❗Food is good quality and quantity is large❕Dinner dishes are under $10. Great value❕ Chinese tea served before the meal was delicious ❗ Dishes aren't greasy like in some Chinese restaurants❗👍✔
Everyone will love Hong Wah for the wonderful food, friendly staff and efficiency in every way. The lunch combinations are reasonably priced, portions are large, and quality is excellent! Dinners are delicious and you will love this very special and endearing Hong Wah Chinese Restaurant. Ask for Danny the waiter who is the very best! He can add scallions to your egg drop or wonton soup! For the reasonably priced lunch combinations, add soup for only $1 more.
This was my first time ordering from this place and the food was delicious and fresh. Customer service was awesome and pricing is pretty good as well. Will definitely be ordering from here again :) overall had a great experience.
This is a great place to eat. Our family love it. We are always welcomed with open arms by the owners. It doesn't matter if it has been a month or more from the last time we were in they always call you by name. We have had the best food and service every time we stop by for a bite to eat. I would say stop in and try it out.
This is a fun place to grab dinner. Portion sizes are plentiful, and the wait staff are very pleasant. I've never had a meal here that wasn't super tasty and served quickly. Come here with friends, get some dishes to share, and try something new!
Will let it be known that you can buy good food for cheap. This is definitely Penfield's best kept secret if you are looking for amazing dine-in food or quick and easy convenient take out this is definitely the place for you. Have tried many items on the menu and everyone is absolutely delicious. Cannot recommend this value-oriented established enough. Customer service is amazing as well.
One of the best Chinese food restaurants in our area period. They have won many awards just to prove that fact. Some very authentic dishes. Always fresh and the people are always welcoming. The tea is always good and hot. Viki (one of the owners) is always taking take-out orders and buzzing around doing the hundreds of things that need to be done. Sit here for a great meal come back and be like a regular or feel like one the first time you step in the door.
The food is high quality. You do need to be patient. Wait time can be more than an hour so call ahead to pre-order especially New Years Eve and holidays. They are take out only right now. They do have waiting area for pick up. To get delivery you have to use grubhub. It amazes me how Vicky remembers so many people's names their orders. Menu is on-line.
Quite possibly the best Chinese I have ever eaten! I had chicken with veggies and it was so fresh and delicious! My husband had beef and broccoli and it was also just as good!We have decided it is worth the trip from Webster.
Before moving and COVID we used to dine-in at Hong Wah for many years. We moved back to Rochester and have been doing takeout. The owners, Vicky & Kevin, take pride in their restaurant and it shows in their food. They have menu selections that will serve meat eaters, Pescatarians & Vegetarians. We have always had great food and service. That is why we continue to patronize Hong Wah.
The food was delicious and you can tell that it was made with fresh ingredients. Prices were more than fair and lower than most Asian restaurants. On top of it all the staff was incredibly friendly and personable. I have definitely found my new favorite restaurant.
I love that such fresh chicken is used here. Chicken is delicious with good quality white meat and good fat ratio. One of the better/best take out spots of the area and good value!
Best Chinese food in Rochester! Always delicious and reasonable process for how great it is. Their home made duck sauce is out of this world, and the have a container that's roughly a cup of sauce for less than $2. They week also give you extra crispy noodles if you ask. Its a little busy because its so good, so plan ahead and give them at least 45 minutes to an hour... Trust me, its worth the wait!
Quality of the food and service has always been exceptional! My family has been going to Hong Wah for as long as I can remember, I highly recommend ordering everything as platters to share ("family style") so you can sample a variety of their dishes. The mark of a restaurant staff that truly takes pride in their work and food will maintain the same quality for their take-out dishes as they do if you are dining-in. Hong Wah does this and I have never been disappointed.
I love this place! The employees were very friendly, the food was very tasty, the prices are great, the inside of the restaurant is very nice, and they even gave us a free drink with our order!! Will definitely be eating here again!! Highly recommend this place to anyone looking for great food.
The Hong Wah is our favorite Chinese restaurant. The food is great every time and the service is always quick. It is takeout only but that has never been a problem for us because we always takeout. Whenever we try any other Chinese restaurant, we always say it’s not as good as Hong Wah!!
Everything tastes great. This is the place to try something new. The soups the appetizers the main entrees are all and always delicious. Fantastic service. Fast, polite and willing to explain. Best place in Rochester area
I've tried Chinese places all around new York and none even come close to the service and quality of food with great prices at Hong Wah. Especially with their Lo Mein (which I highly recommend). The people here are very, very kind, very patient, and are talented cooks. My Mandarin is not good at all, but all I can say for the great service and food I've received is: 謝謝了! If you're wondering if you should eat here, you absolutely should.
Yummy scallion pancakes, chicken with garlic sauce, shredded pork with garlic. Had soup too. Everything was served quickly and waitress was attentive and friendly. We enjoy our visits. They do a brisk take out business too.
This restaurant is by far the BEST place to go for Chinese food in the Rochester, NY area, no question. I am in my 40's and have literally been eating food from restaurant since I was just a kid. The owners were raised in the restaurant business as the parents had a Chinese restaurant for years just across the street from Hong Wah, after retiring, Hong Wah was opened and the quality of the food has never changed. Family recipes carried over obviously and its excellent. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a great Chinese dine-in or take out experience 5 stars everyday!!!! Never been disappointed in their service...
My son and I have been eating at this delightful restaurant for years. It’s family owned and family run. The menu is not overwhelming and they do take special dietary requests. We’ve never had a bad meal. And it’s nice to be so warmly welcomed every time we dine at this Rochester gem. Thanks
Hong Wah is what I remember liking about Chinese Take-out. Crisp, fresh vegetables. Sauces that enhance flavorful dishes instead of taking them over. Their take out dishes are wonderfully packaged. It's nice to see a restaurant do such a great job. I have tried several dishes and they have all been delightful.
Best Chinese food arround! Love the see their awards hanging, always reminds me in choosing the right place to support! Foods delicious and staff is kind. Even with larger orderes nothing's left behind.
My first time getting food from here. And I have to say it is very very good. Everybody is very pleasant. Pretty sure it's family owned and operated. A very warm feeling place.
I’ve visited here and got take out several times and have always left pleased. I’m sad that they no longer have a dine-in option, but I can understand since it allows them to focus on food instead of everything that goes with a sit-down restaurant. The meals are always perfectly cooked with great portion sizes. I placed my order tonight for myself, my parents, and my girlfriend, who is visiting amid her PhD studies. Hong Way makes scallion pancakes, which I absolutely adore and cannot find anywhere else. My mother prefers their beef & broccoli as well as their egg rolls. My girlfriend has tried several different dishes, including the Pad Thai chicken. It smelled quite spicy, but the cooked flavor was perfectly balanced. Their friend rice dishes are also a great balance of ingredients. And my father loves their beef Lo Mein, eating the entire dish in one sitting with how great it was. Highly recommend Hong Wah for take-out both for their service and the fantastic quality of their food. They’ve always been a favorite of the Chinese restaurants on the East Side of Rochester and I plan to continue getting food from them anytime I need to feed a large group.
Went for the first time the other day and by far, this is the best Chinese restaurant around. Every single dish we had - from the shrimp and broccoli to the crispy honey beef to the shrimp toast (!!) to the shrimp fried rice - was cooked and flavored to perfection. The fried rice had that delicious wok fried flavor I have found in only one or two other places (inconsistently at best), and the crispy honey beef was perfectly crispy and sweet without drying out the beef, and the shrimp and broccoli had an amazing flavorful Sauce and delicious succulent shrimp! As did the shrimp toast!! Vicki has such a kind welcoming demeanor and the restaurant just beautifully appointed and quiet and clean. They only do take out now but we could stay and eat there in a lovely booth and it was perfect. Needless to say I cannot say enough about this fabulous restaurant and will return often. So excited to have found it!
Myself and three sons, age 9, 7, and 6 came to dine in. Once the food came my 10year old stopped talking altogether and kept eating. My 7year old said he gave the whole place a five star and more of he could. After asking for thirds, my 6 year old exclaimed, “My mind is blown with how good this food is!”
We were able to dine in, but most of their business is still take out and to go orders. The menu has been updated with some new items and early bird specials. The quantity and taste are still very good. Hopefully, this popular place? Will be open for full dining services in the near future.
great atmosphere, amazing cooks and staff. Have been eating here 15 years and it's been good every time! And not too long to wait until your meal is ready
I’ve been going to Hong Wah for years and always really liked it. Tonight I was really impressed though. Place was PACKED. We got seated and I prepared my kids for a long wait. Nope! Food was out quickly and was hot and delicious. Best Chinese food in Rochester and the service is hard to beat.
Take out only. Food was excellent! Wasn't greasy, swimming in sauce, seemed like the healthiest Chinese food I've had in a long time. Lady and man upfront were very efficient getting orders out considering how many people walked in around the same time.
Extremly well priced lunch specials. Everything is fresh you ca taste and tell the difference between other Chinese restaurants. Take out only. I am a repeat customer and would recommend them to anyone.
The best wonton soup ever. Reminds me of the 90s
Today was 1st experience. Wonderful staff, helpful for future meal specialities and my order arrived quickly! Highly recommend and can see why they received best Chinese restaurant awards! The General Tao Shrimp was outstanding! Currently only takeout provided but full menu available.
It was really busy in there, but the service was still quick and the food came out super fast. Food was excellent as always. Friendly staff, prices are very reasonable. If you haven't tried their food, you definitely should give them a try. You can't see it from the road, it's behind Dublin Donuts. The woman at the counter is a machine. I watched her from my table. She was handling SO many things at once. She was answering the phone taking orders (which didn't stop ringing), handling pick ups for take out & cashing out customers all at same time
I love places like this and this one didn’t disappoint! Everything I ordered was excellent, and the staff was so friendly. I have found my new place for Chinese food in Rochester. Ever since Bamboo House closed I’ve been yearning for good Chinese and hadn’t found it until tonight. Can’t wait to return!
Absolutely love this place best egg drop soup in Rochester! Such kind people, and great service!!
The whole experience was lovely, customer service was excellent, and the food was the perfect rainy day dinner! Our first time here but it definitely won’t be our last! :)
I can’t speak of the atmosphere as I have not had the opportunity to eat inside. Ever since the pandemic it doesn’t seem like they are open for business to eat inside. However, their food is AMAZING!!!! I’m from San Francisco where the food in China Town is exquisite. Since moving to Penfield I have tried all the local east side Chinese restaurants. None co late to this place. The chicken lo mein is fantastic. The pan fried pot stickers are to die for and definitely try the general tso chicken. It’s not too sweet like most places. I only wish this place delivered!!! I can’t find it available on grub hub, DoorDash or uber eats!!
My food was excellent.. the unbreaded chickens was fresh with right temp .. the spicy beef was also fresh with the right spice .. it was firm .. yellow rice was packed in it’s container to the top and it was tasty too .. friendly service .. can’t go wrong here
The food and service was great! They are currently only doing take out orders. Probably best to order ahead of time. However my order was done quick and waited like 10-15 mins. Got the beef fried rice. Big chunks of egg and a healthy portion of beef. Depending on the day and time it could get tricky to get in and out of the plaza from 441, but alt routes too.
Our favorite local Chinese place. Food is excellent. Sometimes orders are not ready and you have to wait even if no one else is there, it is annoying and it used to be much better. Customer service should be better.
Only one problem as far as I'm concerned. I always have to ask for the hot mustard when the crunchy noodles are brought prior to ordering. The other night, the (very) small glass bowl of hot mustard had a ring around the top of the mustard in the bowl meaning it had sat there for a while. Not very appetizing. BUT....Christine is the best waitress they have & the food itself is great.
As a vegan, I review things accordingly. Half of the score is vegan options, half of it is friendliness. Vegan options: EXCELENT tofu taste AND texture, however no vegan sides except rice and broccoli. Not sure if any of their soups are vegan, so no points off there until I know for sure. No tofu lunch specials, no tofu casserole, no vegan sea food. Could do better here, however I'm happy with the options that exist here. Its VERY hard for any place to get 5/5, so 3/5. The staff is VERY friendly as with any place, this one is always an easy one to get a 5/5. 3/5 + 5/5 = 8/10 = 4 stars! Advice: Try expanding on the vegan options, add some vegan soups and more tofu options.
My family visits and/or picks up take out from Hong Wah often. The menu contains a large selection of familiar chinese dishes and I feel it's much better quality than the typical take-out Chinese restaurant. They have a large dining room with plenty of tables for large or small groups. Even though Friday and Saturday nights are busy, we usually wait only a few minutes at prime dinner time. The restaurant is super clean and the staff are very friendly and attentive. The owners of the restaurant are almost always at the front counter and make you feel welcome and always ask how everything was. You can tell they legitimately care about your experience.
The food is really good, however, the inside is quite outdated and slightly unkempt. It's never great to have your menus pages stick together because of all the old food on them. That being said the food is really good I got the general tso chicken and it had the perfect amount of spice with real vegetables in it.
Some of the best Chinese food on the east side . The portions are generous and the food is of the highest quality. There isn't a bad dish on the menu , the dumplings are some of the best I have ever had . If you live close you've got to order from them
Very good Chinese food. Very fresh and well prepared. Not too heavy. Been in business for a long time. Highly recommended!
This is a great place to order takeout! This is the best Chinese I've ever had! The only sad thing is that after COVID, they never opened up dine in, but they do have the option to eat your takeout inside, however, there is no service.
Everything we ordered was pretty good. My partner says the rangoon are the best in the county. Using canned mushrooms for the lo mein is diabolical though. I can tolerate it on pizza, but seemed weird for this type of restaurant. Love that they include a sachet of tea.
Great Chinese restaurant. We order out all the time. Food is tasty and very affordable- as much as $5 less per dish than some other places in the wider area. They have all the classic dishes and are pretty accommodating with some customized ordering. Some dishes can be a bit heavily sauced but this is a matter of taste, they will serve with less sauce if asked. One time they didn’t and the owner took the dish off the bill without hesitation. Be aware they get very busy at peak times- pickup waits can sometimes be longer than they estimate but they really hustle to get you your food. Owners are very friendly and always there running the place. Inside is spacious and nice enough, cleanliness is not a 10 but not cause for concern either.
The food was pretty good , I will be returning again.
Food is pretty good, staff are friendly, and prices are good. Mostly (if not completely) take out at this point. Be prepared to wait a bit after you’ve placed your order, but the food is fresh and consistent.
The food may be good but the condition of the restaurant is disgusting. The wait staff needs new uniforms as the ones they are wearing are worn out, dirty, and stained. The windows need to be washed greasy hand prints all over the glass. The menus and sticky and full of grease. Carpet is worn out and torn.
Always like this place but tonight was disappointing. Kung pao chicken- not a lot of chicken, too many peanuts and celery. Flavor was off. Always impeccable service and accuracy. Also wish they would go back to in-restaurant service and have heard the same from Other patrons.
The woman who helped us was super nice and I really wanted to like this place, but should have known better for a business that's been servicing Penfield residents for so long. The food was just very bland. I ordered something labeled as 'spicy' on the menu and there was not even the slightest hint of spice. It was very disappointing. Portions were decent. If you're a white person living in Penfield you'll probably like this place. My guess is they've probably had to dial back on flavor after too many Karen's complained 🤷
They do good business here. Great location. I give them 3 stars because they need a remodel and because they over work the employees and they get stressed out. Having an insight to their culture by marriage I would have more to say, but it would be not appropriate for this forum. They are a coke establishment and their tea is very good. Most of their food is fried. A few steamed options.
I struggle to give this place a fair review, because it is obviously very popular with the local (non-Asian) crowd, and the wait staff was very pleasant. But the food is typical American-"Chinese", and totally lacks any semblance to any of the wonderful authentic Chinese cuisines! If you think Sesame Chicken and Pei Wei are the real deal, you'd love this place! Personally, I wouldn't go back again. Prices are reasonable though.
Got takeout tonight and it was disappointing. Pros: price; inclusion of a tea bag and fortune cookies and those crispy strips with sauces; chicken in the sesame chicken felt very “real” and there were plenty of shrimp in the shrimp lo mein; spring rolls were good enough. Cons: sesame chicken was not very tender and didn’t have much sauce; zero veggies with the sesame chicken, not even a garnish of broccoli; very little flavor or sauce on the shrimp lo mein, and it was kind of a mushy texture. My husband likes mushrooms but thought they detracted from the shrimp lo mein. We won’t be back.
We have ordered from Hung Wah several times in the past and our experience has always been the same. The fried rice is good, the egg rolls are good but none of the main dishes really stand out. The chicken they use is typically not crispy, large chucks that are tough, and difficult to eat without a knife. I like sauce but they really over sauced all the meals. Note: save yourself time and just show up 15 minutes later than the time given to you over the phone. This place has a loyal customer base, many people coming in knew the owners and the owners knew repeat customers' names. I did like that about this place. Typically I love to support a local business, but if the food isn't tasty, I'm not drawn back. We keep trying but have never been impressed with the quality. Maybe we ordered the wrong things, I'm not sure? But overall an overwhelming "Meh" meal.
Hit or Miss. Some visits you get excellent service, others you don't. If you have an issue with the dish, some servers will get it fixed, others don't care. Sometimes soda comes with refills, sometimes not. Overall, the lackluster effort on some servers ruins the entire restaurant. When you order food, you have certain expectations that should be met or at least addressed when you bring your concern up to the staff. Being told lo mein is supposed to be "dry" only demonstrates that this waiter doesn't know his food (hard to believe) or more likely, just doesn't care to be bothered and knew the kitchen had sent out noodles that had been prepared well in advance and sat under a heat lamp long enough to dry out. When done right, the food here is very good, but if you only enjoy the meals 2 out of 5 times, then the problem is one that the staff and owners aren't bothering to address. This restaurant used to be one of the best in the area but of late, it's probably better avoided until there is a serious effort to correct the kitchen and staff issues.
My family and I recently had takeout, chicken and cashews, (2) sesame chicken and chicken and broccoli. We all were disappointed. Understandably it was slightly warm since it was takeout, however reheating it was no big deal. The major issue the chicken was not good. The chicken was dry, stringy and with the sesame chicken it left an odd after taste. My family and I are looking forward to the restaurant reopening.
Love the food but they consistently have it ready way after they say. I just got an order that was estimated at 45 minutes that took 90. Such a hassle and waste of my time. Tell me 90 minutes and that’s when I will show up. Hire more help or just be realistic about the wait time.
Great food but constantly messing up my to go orders. I didn't say anything as we have been long time standing customers even with Kam Wah restaurant. We have spent lots of money there. Today was the last straw when they gave my order away to someone else though. I get a 30 minute lunch and have to leave my place of work to pick up order so i don't have time to sit and wait for the order to be remade. Unfortunately, not wasting my time anymore.
Used to be super fast and amazing food. Still amazing food but waited over 90 minutes for what should have been a quick order of hot and sour soup. Would have left but had prepaid and the promise of just a few more minutes was continually stated.
The restaurant is somewhat shabby. Service is OK, nothing special. I was not pleased with my food. Fairly tasteless. Even the fried rice was poor. I will not return here. There are plenty of good Chinese restaurants in Rochester so no need to go here again.
Keep hearing good things so we tried this today instead of our regular place China King. Lomein was tasteless and dry. Sizzling steak was anything but. No flavor at all. Even egg rolls were less than average. For a place so busy food was terrible. Never again.
We’ve been going here for the last decade, and used to love the place. However, over the last few years they have fallen apart, and it’s come to the point we no longer bother. We gave them chance after chance for redemption ( I’d say 5 times). Briefly during Covid the grandmother was in cooking and the food was fantastic, although treatment of customers was abhorrent and on a level I’ve never seen. Knowing these were tough times on us all is why we gave so many chances. The food became nearly inedible, always completely drenched in whatever cheap oil it is they use, veggies unfresh and soggy. It went from being a weekly order to never ever again. Very sad
How this place is rated over 4 stars is beyond me. Their spice rack is empty--but they have plenty of sugar! The lemon chicken was soggy and flavorless (until I added the sickeningly sweet lemon sauce). The fried rice was equally bland. Same goes for the sweet and sour pork. The egg rolls were the usual ones you get from seemingly every Chinese restaurant. For eastsiders, China King in Fairport and Chef King in Bushnell's Basin are far better choices.
Was really disappointed in the food here. My former coworkers had raved about this place for so long and I finally was in the area and decided to try it. I ordered the broccoli in garlic sauce, general Tsos tofu and the triple delight. They were all smothered in sauce, yet lacking in flavor. The broccoli and tofu were supposedly “spicy” (indicated by a pepper 🌶️ on the menu) and they were not even a little bit spicy. They just tasted sweet, like duck sauce or something. The food was so disappointing that I threw out the leftovers. My husband agreed that it was nothing special. Would not go here again or recommend to anyone.
Waiting for food on Christmas Day. Ordered our food at 11am in anticipation for a lot of different orders. Told us pick up is at 5. Currently 5:50 and still waiting. They need better time management. They’ve worked Christmas before and they should know to at least stagger the orders. People are calling now and telling them 2 hours. At least be honest and tell them 4 or cut them off all together
Was quoted an hour and a half wait for food on Christmas eve but when I arrived I was told It would take an additional hour. While I understand it's busy on Christmas Eve having a semi-close time estimate is important as some people where told there food would be ready at 6pm but we're still waiting on food at 7:30pm. Can give a review of the food as we canceled our order and now are scrambling to come up with a solution. While the staff was very apologetic this couldn't have happened at a worst time.
Just finished picking up take out. Normally, I would enjoy the food at Hong Wah. Today was different. My order was for spicy prawns and chicken from their lunch menu. There was nothing spicy about the dish. Soupy bland sauce and loads of canned mushrooms. I threw half the dish out. I know you can do better. Very disappointed.
We have been faithful Hong Wah customers for several years, and have heartily recommended this restaurant to many friends. Unfortunately our experience was very disappointing on February 23, 2017, when we had lunch at Hong Wah. We arrived at 1 PM and the restaurant was busy, but seating was available. The owner did not seat us immediately even though we had requested a booth and several were available. We ordered hot and soup soup, chicken with broccoli and Hunan scallops with beef. The hot and sour soup had no flavor except for vinegar. The duck soup was so thin it dripped off the dry noodles. We waited 40 minutes for two meals, and we considered leaving without having lunch. When the meals arrived, one was only 60% the size of the other. After the meal, we asked for my lunch and my husband's egg roll to be packaged to take home. The waiter slopped everything together in one box, so the result was a glom of unappetizing food. I threw out the leftovers. Two of our favorite wait staff are no longer at Hong Wah during lunchtime. I don't know if they have left the restaurant or have changed hours. We miss them. All in all, this trip was a huge disappointment. we will not be back. To the owners: you are getting very inconsistent reviews on goggle. I will also be posting on trip advisor. Please bring your restaurant back up to its previously excellent standards.
Very low quality, the worst Chinese food I have ever had. Was mostly filler besides the Strings of tiny bits of chicken, and not to mention the server was extremely condescending. A rip-off. Save your money, Goes without saying that is my last Hong Wah experience, the last time I was here my friend received a sesame chicken dish that was just tiny pieces of an unknown fried meat but It looked, tasted, and the consistency was nothing like chicken. Disappointed.
Not sure what all the hype is about! My chicken pad Thai was so dry I had to add the sauce from my son’s dumplings to it! Dumplings were mostly dough and barely filled. Egg Roll tasted like it had sat around for awhile. Won’t be back. Have better Chinese closer to home.
Our experience at Hong Wah the past 2 times have been extremely disappointing. When you list 'egg rolls' it needs to advise shell fish are in them. Wife bit into a full piece shrimp unexpectedly in her egg roll. She does NOT like fish. Standard egg roll in the area typically is vegetable or pork. Would need to specify "I'd like a shrimp egg roll" not by default give someone fish. The menu does NOT warn of seafood allergies. Will not be eating here again.
We had heard this place won all sorts of awards . I don't know why, our food was terrible. It is also take out only.
You can eat in, but it is served as though you ordered out. Also, we suspect the food is all purchased frozen the just deep fried or heated there. I would say it is not made fresh there.
Just had sesame chicken. The absolute worst I wish I would have read the reviews before
What happened? Used to be awesome. The owners have become greedy. Hire some extra help! Can’t get a server to take your order or check on you. More worried about busying the tables. Food was spectacular. Now like the worst takeout. So sad. Going down like the original Cam Wah.
Not sure how this place is rated so high! The sesame chicken was like eating some sort of rubbery plastic and gets stringy when you try to bite into it, you'll be chewing for a while and most certainly need floss after the strings of "chicken" get stuck in your teeth. The fried rice was bright yellow, tasteless, and didn't even have the texture of rice, the egg rolls were obviously frozen and deep fried. Just gross.
My husband and I have always enjoyed the food at Hong Wah--until a few months ago. We ordered our usual takeout--sesame chicken. I'm sad to say, but there is no other way to put it--it was awful. It was chicken floating in brown water. We could not eat it and threw the lunches out. We live 50 minutes away, but always made a point of stopping here when we were in the area. Unfortunately, our disappointment will not allow for a second chance here.
The most rubbery chicken I’ve ever had and the blandest Chinese food I’ve ever had! And what is with that fried rice?? Is it orange because of all the oil? It virtually had no flavor at all and nothing in it but orange color. Hardly a speck of veg. I hate to leave bad reviews but feedback is important if you care at all about your business. Too bad too…I love Chinese food when it’s made well.
Ordered sesame chicken, fried rice, and mu shu pork. The chicken was tough, rubbery, and stringy, the fried rice was nothing more than yellow colored rice lacking much of anything else and the pork had very little pork. So disappointed.
No longer a sit-down restaurant, only take out. Good and service was excellent b4 covid. Wanted to enjoy a nice dinner…. Didn’t happen. Went to the top notch Michael’s Valley Grill… a real pleasure!
First time trying this place and won't be back. The chicken was inedible. The sauce had such an awful flavor. The peppers in the general tso looked like they were rotted before being cooked. The honey chicken was so chewy.
This place is not the same It was 4-4.5 stars before. I threw it away. I never waste food. It was gross. Chicken so overcooked it was like jerky. Watery sauce. Awful.
Just called to place a large takeout order, which would have been well over $150 in total, but decided to order elsewhere since the woman who was taking my order was very inflexible with even the most simple requests (ie; can we just get plain fried rice instead of pork fried rice with the order, and can we substitute a vegetable or shrimp egg roll / spring roll for the pork egg roll) Received a firm "NO" to both requests. Told only thing they would do is plain white rice and extra plain white rice) POOR SERVICE and absolutely ridiculous that such an easy and basic request could not be accommodated. So, all in all, we were ordering a total of 10 dinners and some appetizers, but now we have taken our business elsewhere, and will not be back.
Edit: the last few times I have gone the food has made me sick, this place is definitely not what it used to be. The female working is usually friendly but will get annoyed if you dont pay in cash and the male is rather rude and dismissive during interactions (I believe these are the owners). Customer service needs some improvement but food is pretty good 👍
For years this was our go-to Chinese restaurant on the east side of Rochester. I don't know what happened with their level of quality, but we will never go back. The braised beef noodle soup was bland and the beef was riddled with grizzle. The pan fried dumplings were greasy and lacked seasoning with the filling and the fries rice with he combo dinner had no flavor. The egg roll with the combo dinner was greasy and under cooked. So sad.....
The napkins in the bag had BLOOD STAINS on them. The dining room is 80% full of crates and equipment. About 5 tables are open. I ordered 3 lunch specials for myself and co-workers. They charged me for sodas and eggrolls when I specified sodas instead of eggrolls on the phone. The General Tso's chicken that I ordered had bell peppers in it. I don't really have a problem with that; they can make the food with whatever twist they want, but the sauce wasn't spicy and didn't taste similar to any other general Tso's I've ever had before. I've had lunch there before and it was great, but this experience just really leaves a bad impression.
Just picked up my order, orange chicken was so hot and spicy, I haven’t ever had spicy orange chicken, also this chicken they are using is very rubbery and old tasting. Had an order of sesame chicken this was also very rubbery and had an old taste. I asked for pork fried rice, it was only yellow rice, no vegetables or pork inside of the rice. Honestly very disappointed, this was my first time ordering from here. I know if I was to call they wouldn’t do anything about this, so I figured I would leave a review.
