Opinions de Axiote Playa del Carmen
Four of us had the tasting menu last night and it was excellent. The staff were super friendly. My son is a chef and he enjoyed the complex flavors and textures of every dish. Other reviews mention wait times between dishes. It did take a little longer than normal while they were very busy after about 7:30pm. Not a big deal. We expected the whole experience to take about 3 hours, which it did. Have fun, enjoy your company, the atmosphere and savor the food. We would definitely recommend this place if you’re looking for an affordable tasting menu with Micheline quality.
The best meal I've had in a long time! The chef's tasting dinner with alcohol pairing was incredible. Each course was interesting, unique, beatifully presented, and the alcohol pairings were perfect. Michelin-recognized and it shows. Thank you for a spectacular meal to end my week in Playa del Carmen!
The tasting menu was fantastic and rivaled that of the very best in Mexican cuisine (e.g. Pujol in CDMX). The mezcal selection is insane - top top tier. The service was pleasant and knowledgeable, and the live music entertainment was enjoyable - complementary without impeding enjoyment of the meal. One of the most memorable meals we’ve had in Mexico and absolutely worth the trip from our resort. This restaurant deserves to be considered a worthy destination in and of itself.
Xavier did a mezcal tasting with us then we did the 6 courses. Not only did we learn about mezcal but the selection of mezcals was amazing! The food was ridiculously good. I think it's very hard to go wrong there but I suggest getting some mezcal and letting the chef decide for you with the 6 or 8 courses. Everything was so good we came back the next night to try more of the menu. We also had some very delicious cocktails. The server remembered us from the night before and helped us try new items from the menu! The service was very good as well! High class joint without being snooty!
There are times when you encounter something so amazing in the most unexpected of places that you start questioning reality. An elevated haute cuisine desert was the experience of the day. At Axiote, this chocolate desert was amazing. Imagine a deconstructed brownie of fresh coco beans mixed with raw peanuts, honey and Lyncott cream, which could have been its own thing, but them top it with a Hydrogenated honey and orange foam and you get a desert so surreal that you can't help but laugh and cry with ever bite, because you realize it is one of the most exquisite experiences you will have in your life while fully understanding Proust's yearning for Madeleine. That was us tonight and we couldn't help but ask for a second serving, which was as exquisite as the first. And that was after an appetizer (Ha'Sikil P'ak) and main course (Terrina de Cerdo) that both deserve their own stories. Michelin gave it a bib gourmand award but in my book this desert alone requires its own trip.
Omg Nomz!!!!!!!! My friend recommended this restaurant since I was looking for dishes with insects. It also popped up as one of the best restaurants in the area. So we had to try it out. We ordered the guacamole with grasshoppers, it was very taster with a bit of smokey and sour taste from the grasshoppers. A must try, had their shrimp Mole and their duck tacos which were delish, and of course dessert which was very interesting, it was a savory cheesecake with tomatoes, olives, figs, edam cheese on top. It he flavors were interestingly well made and the cheesecake was very light. The vibes of this place was just the right kind! Not too pretentious. Very relaxing. Oh their drinks were interesting too and if you like mezcal they have some mezcal cocktails. Loved eating here.
The tasting menu was filled with beautiful and delicious dishes, and the staff creatively took into account some restrictions I had (no lactose, no alcohol) without missing a beat. They even invented a new dessert on the spot when I couldn’t eat the normal desserts. Highly recommended if you are in playa for any length of time.
Axiote Cocina de México is a fantastic spot for anyone who appreciates high-quality Mexican cuisine! The restaurant offers a great selection of food and drinks, with dishes that are both beautifully presented and full of authentic flavors. We had a lovely dinner here, enjoying the cochinita and the tuna, both of which were cooked to perfection. The desserts were also a great way to round off the meal. The service was friendly and attentive, making for a very pleasant dining experience. While the prices are on the higher side, the quality of the food makes it absolutely worth it. If you’re in Playa del Carmen and looking for a great place to enjoy refined Mexican flavors, Axiote is definitely a top choice!
It was our first time trying a Michelin star restaurant which we didn't even know until we sat down. There was an issue when we were waiting. They decided to roast Chili's and smoked up the whole restaurant. Everybody was coughing and their eyes were burning. Getting past that our waiter was amazing. Very attentive. We ordered the guacamole with grasshoppers which was very good. I do recommend it. Then we had the ceviche with shrimp. That was also very good and I had the duck tacos not my favorite but overall it was a good restaurant. I would come back and try some different things next time.
The wait time to be seated varied depending on the color of your skin so watch out for that. I observed this behavior by the proprietor on several occasions throughout the night. However once seated the wait staff were generally very nice. The food was fantastic although the chile ancho was a bit too spicey for me. The grilled cauliflower with its sauce was terrific and the cheesecake was absolutely delicious. The drinks were very good as well. This could have been an amazing experience except for the behavior of the proprietor/host ; which was very clear. He would take several minutes to ask what poc at the door wanted ( he basically ran to others) then tell them to wait for 5 minutes while he cleared up a table when their were other open tables which it turned out were free for quite some time anyway. The five minutes ended up being 20 for most where it seemed the hope was they would just leave.
Mexican restaurant recommended by the Michelin guide. Fancy menu. Prices are above average. We didn’t like some flavors . Some dishes were so spicy that there was no flavor at all. The tacos were frankly bad. There was one waiter and one bartender for the whole place. They tried of course, but their efforts were not enough. The ordered dishes and drinks waited endlessly while sitting on very uncomfortable hard chairs. Spoiled evening .
We chose this restaurant for a special evening and booked the full tasting experience (8 courses + wine pairing), which is significantly more expensive than most places in Cancún. Expectations were high. The beginning was excellent. The first course (ceviche) was creative, refined, and truly exciting — a great introduction to modern Mexican cuisine. Unfortunately, immediately after the first course, the restaurant suffered a power outage. From that moment on, there was no lighting, no music, no atmosphere whatsoever. We ate the rest of the menu using our phone flashlights. A single candle was placed on the table, went out, and was never replaced. What shocked us most was the complete lack of management. No real communication, no effort to improve the situation, no alternative solution, and no commercial gesture — despite the fact that the experience we paid for was objectively incomplete. When we calmly explained that we had paid for the full experience but received only part of it, a partial discount was refused. The owner’s behavior afterward made us uncomfortable: watching us closely during payment and following us outside, which felt inappropriate and unprofessional. I’ve been working in Michelin-starred restaurants for over 10 years, and while incidents can happen, how they are handled makes all the difference. Here, the handling was simply not acceptable. The food itself was okay overall, but a tasting menu is about the entire experience, and this one clearly fell short
While it was one of our favorite places, the latest experience was disappointing. Super long wait time, they were clearly understaffed. The waitress was super nice, but she simply couldn’t handle that many people. The food was not great and when we asked about the fish( we had a catch of the day before and it was amazing) we were told that the chef made it not the usual way that’s why it was boiled rather then grilled.. initially the waiter admitted that and said that they will prepare another one for us and we returned it, but then came back saying there are no fishes left and they can put ours in the oven.… Really? Moreover, they included this fish (which we returned) in the bill… So unfortunate, as we brought our guests and we was hoping to impress them and it turned out to be completely opposite…
