September 30, 2023: we came today because it was petit Jacqueline's last day of operation. It was one of our favorite restaurant's in Portland. We'll miss it. 2022 July: we ate on the outside patio. It only has three tables. The street is closed to traffic and I thought it was charming. I enjoyed the main entre of salmon, but the French onion soup this time was totally flavorless. I had it here many times in the past and enjoyed it. Something went wrong today. Fortunately, the main entre saved the day. 2022 april: oysters with champagne ice are fantastic. French onion soup was good .Beef Burgoyne is made with lardon, which is bacon, so it had a strong bacon flavor which I did no care for. The restaurant was crowded but well spaced. 2019:Another excellent dinner. Oyster s, French onion soup, and chicken were outstanding. 2018:Excellent food, we enjoyed everything we had both appetizers (oysters, fois gras) and entries (duck, beef). Fiedly staff. We were in a hurry bbefore a concert and they were able to accommodate our schedule without sacrificing surface or quality of the food. We eat at petite Jacqueline several times at there old location. They moved two years ago and we were happy to find that the food remained just as good.
What a lovely place for brunch, we had great Crêpes and some wonderful soup. The fresh mini biscuits were simply amazing! The Crêpe I had was with cream cheese, smoked salmon, capers and onions. It was a fantasist mix of all. I highly reckon and.
Went here for the Valentine's prix fixe menu and was really impressed. From start to finish each dish was absolutely perfect and delicious. Staff were attentive and kind and the atmosphere comfortable. I'll post a photo of the entire set menu, but what I chose was the mushroom starter, scallop main and cheesecake for dessert. We also got bread to mop up our plates in between courses which was also really good baguette. Highly recommended it and I know I'll be back again.
Very difficult to find these authentic French bistros serving traditional French entrees'. Not all of us want a bistro with an "interesting twist" but prefer the real deal. We were there in the afternoon and unfortunately had other commitments for dinner. But the items we had were amazing as was the wine. Very few places serve decent wines by the glass but this place nailed it. Bummer they were out of onion soup, seems like that should be a bedrock item. Dining here will be at the top of our list when we return to Portland ME.
Walked in on Mothers Day which is the one of their most busy days of the year. Nevertheless the host got me a table and was cool about it long as I was gone before the reservation for the table I was at. They make a great Greyhound and the salad with smoked salmon was 👍🏽 👌 French onion soup was decent but overall a great place with great service!
Loved the place. Great food, good wine and good prices. Nice service and dining area too. We also had a couple appetizers and a dessert but didn’t take pictures (we were hungry and dug right in 😉). All was great and I can’t wait to go back to try more things on the menu.
This is our second time dining at Petite Jacqueline. The food was great, the atmosphere was wonderful (a nice french bistro feel) and the service was excellent. We have recommended it to friends traveling to Portland. Portland has a ton of wonderful restaurants and Petite Jacqueline is one of them.
Love coming here for brunch great food every time! It may sound simple but the baguette with salted butter is just wonderful and all the soups we have tried have been just fantastic also the potatoes with he perfect over easy egg are so delicious I recommend
Service was good and menu was very authentically French. I went in right before end of happy hour and had a choice of different French liquors like pastis but also non-French drinks. Oyster selection was great for $1.50. Service was great.
Went here for a bachlorette dinner. Absolute amazing spot. Espresso martinis were on point. I’d opt not to get the lobster roll from here as the other food really stood out more.
We absolutely loved it here! The food and atmosphere were both incredible. We felt like we were eating in Europe! (We ate on the patio outside). Great espresso martini and great service too. Can't wait to go back!
One word: baguette. So good. They served it with several different butters and we were obsessed with the honey kind. I didn’t love my iced coffee cocktail concoction but the lobster Benedict was pretty good and I was basically all about the bread and the street seating was fun so that made up for it. Haha.
Phenomenal meal. Everything about Petite Jacqueline is perfect. I will definitely plan to visit again in the future.
Delicious meals, great drinks, professional and competent service, in a nice atmosphere. Earned all 5 stars.
Tasty crepes and Quiche Lorraine. You may want to try hot chocolate with Charteuse. Nice music, bright space with big windows and friendly personnel.
This was my daughter's 13th Birthday choice for dinner..she stole my spot. This is such a great place and great memories built here.
We've done quite a bit of take out during the pandemic. We're happy to support local restaurants but bringing food home to reheat is usually a suboptimal experience. Not here! We ordered the Family Basket. It was delicious and all the food was well chosen to travel and reheat well. The food was labeled and packed with care. Even the French style napkins and utensils were tied with pretty string. Great food, great value, great service! Couldn't be happier.
Such a great restaurant! It was our anniversary and they gave us a nice table and some free bubbly! Our server, Alec, was so welcoming it caught us off guard (we’re from Baltimore and don’t get that much back home). The baguette was perfect. Escargot, duck breast, and bourguignon were so savory and delicious! 11/10 would go again. Highly recommend! 🙌
Beautiful location! Atmosphere! From the warm host over the phone, to our delightful server, the meal was an experience in fine French dining directly from a Paris bistro. Cocktails were perfect. Wine was absolutely wonderful as was the steak frites, bread and house salad. The cream brûlée is heaven sent to say the very, very least. Make a reservation and go with someone fun! The escargot was not in the shell with garlic & warm butter but rather in little bowl with brown gravy. Hopefully they’ll bring back the “butter” version.
My girlfriend and I decided to have dinner here Saturday night. Since she grew up in Paris I was expecting some criticism from her but it was just the opposite. Not only did she find the food to be completely authentic and well prepared, she said it reminded her of her childhood back in France. The atmosphere was warm and inviting and the location was just walking distance from our hotel. Our bartender, Caroline, was the perfect compliment to the entire experience and we will definitely come back again for a repeat experience.
We made reservations for their Raclette and it was such a fun & delicious experience! I highly recommend booking it for a special occasion. The salad before is a little funny, as it is just a giant plate of arugula with vinaigrette. It could be served as half of the current size, and still be a generous starter salad. I highly recommend booking this for a special occasion or fun date night idea!
Absolutely amazing dinner. We ordered the fondue, steak fries, and roasted chicken and could not have been happier with our choices. Everything was wonderful, service was prompt without being overbearing. A highlight of our visit to Portland for sure!
Ate there Saturday night sat at the bar not too busy had an exceptional meal. Great wine, great service and a great bartender. I forgot her name but very gracious with her service. and must stop in if you have time for a full meal delicious.
Fantastic dinner. The waiter was very knowledgeable as well as excited about the new chef. We had bone marrow, duck confit, and trout. Ever bite was a rich and delicious experience. Really well done and beautifully presented.
We came here for our anniversary dinner and loved it. We started at the bar during happy hour and ordered the oysters and ham and gruyere crepe. Both were delicious! When it was time for our reservation we moved to a table and the service was wonderful. I ordered the prix fixe entree (mussels) and it came with a salad and a blueberry pudding that was amazing! My husband ordered the chef’s choice which was a ribeye steak along with pasta and it was also very good. We enjoyed the cozy and romantic atmosphere. Petite Jacqueline is a perfect date night spot!
Beautiful location with huge windows and calm interior. Food was well thought out and carefully put together. Definitely a great brunch spot or casual dining. Feels upscale but not snobby. The steak frites where amazing and cooked perfectly. I will definitely be back with friends.
C’est magnifique. The cocktails, the flavors, the presentation - all magnificent. We enjoyed a dinner and dessert here that were our best in Portland. They don’t pack in the crowds and each meal is expertly prepared. This is a great place for a romantic dinner but remember to make your reservations.
Nice restaurant in Portland. We went on a Tuesday evening and they had a Prix fixe menu with 3 courses including a salad, a fish entree, and a dessert. I think this was a great value. They also have a special for the day which was a half chicken. The drink list was quite good and desseets were nice and not overwhelming after a big dinner. It was a very nice experience and I will definitely be back.
Really nice ambiance and setting for brunch. Friendly and prompt service. The omelette and French toast we got were delicious! We are lactose sensitive and pork-free which made options limited but we intend on coming back to try the duck crape and sandwich
Nice small cozy place. Service was very good also. Had the sea bass and it was very tender but a bit bland. Overall it was a nice place with a good selection of cocktails too. Small menu which I always enjoy seeing.
Cool quaint atmosphere, sat at the bart. Good service. Great wine (Cab Franc, yes!!!), good food, pricey only because of the amount of food you get. I'd go again.
Food was good. We tried the escargot as well as the mushroom appetizers, the sole meunière, and the steak frites. The baguette was a little overcooked but good. I thought the portions were a bit small. Our party enjoyed the desserts. The biggest drawback for us was the temperature of the dining room. It was awfully cold in there. We were told that they keep it very cold because as the night goes on, it gets warm in there. Restaurant was full when we left and it was still freezing in there.
This place is not what it used to be. Prior to the new chef, it was an excellent French Bistro that my girlfriend and I would visit multiple times per summer (for the past 3 years). We would recommend this restaurant to everyone, now we recommend not attending. Our most recent visit was terrible. The chicken liver had an un-edible layer of fat on the top. The escargot came with only 3 snails, encapsulated in massive fried balls. That’s about as far as we made it. We cashed out and went to a different restaurant. Attached is the food from the old restaurant. It was top notch and truly French. Hopefully this place gets their act together and reverts to the old menus. The spring and summer 2023 menus are laughable in comparison. Updated review after response from the owner: What was there to explain? The layer of fat tasted rotten, almost resembling vomit. This was by no means a flavor that can be incorporated into anything. It was a nice touch being charged an extra $4 for the baguette that was listed in the description as well. Did I mention there was a hair in it? Anyways, if it was explained to me that I was going to be charged $16 for three snails in hollow fried balls on soggy arugula perhaps I would have ordered the french onion soup. Wait, I did try to do that; you guys were all out. Judging by the most recent reviews on google and yelp, running out of french onion soup seems to be a common occurrence. Not everyone wants to eat bone marrow, chicken liver, or snails. I seriously hope the pursuit of being different isn't this restaurant's demise.
3.5 I wanted to love Petite Jacqueline... Unfortunately, nearly every aspect left something to be desired, aside from the macarons, which were quite good and would be the only thing to bring me back. Soup was bland and heinously overpriced, salt was the overwhelming flavor on the frites, and the "mousse" had the consistency of fudgy frosting. While the interior is charming and attractive, the playlist was an Amy Winehouse/Adele mix tape which severely harshed the atmosphere. I hate to write reviews on singular experiences, but as I don't foresee myself going back any time soon...
Had a great lunch! I have been doing the Maine oyster trail and was so excited to get some oysters. They were great but one arrived broken in half with shells in it. When I asked for a replacement it was super awkward and I was questioned- resulting in an uncomfortable end to lunch. I was surprised to be served a broken oyster at such a nice place. Not sure if that is a normal standard.
Food was hit and miss. Boeuf bourguignon was great. Fondue was just ok.
The service was good and the drinks were great! Friendly staff and comfortable, yet upscale atmosphere. The food was somewhat wrong…. The French onion soup was made incorrectly and was as thick as gravy. Not to mention a large layer of fat sitting on top that was not from the cheese. We then waited for over an hour for one hanger steak (cooked well, but the steak knives were really dull and the kids couldn’t cut the meat). The fries were excellent. The sides were all excellent too! Maybe a little heavy on the butter, but hey- everyone loves butter. The trout was great! But portion was very small. Probably could have double the size for the price we were paying. Loved the vibe- made it feel like all were welcome. I’d suggest to the owners that the knives need upgrading and the French onion soup needs a new recipe. Would love to give them another chance and maybe for brunch or another dinner.
My wife's birthday dinner did not start well. Street parking was none existent, forcing us to park in a lot in front of the restaurant that only allowed for a $21.00 charge at the pay machine. We got to the restaurant on time, but our table booked months before and reconfirmed in person at lunchtime had been given away. The person seating us said that he was not aware, which just meant that he had not checked the computer when seating the other couple. Even when it became open while we were waiting on our main courses, we were not offered the option to move over to it. Different waiters served us through the meal. The mussels were excellent, as well as the side dish of Brussels sprouts. My wife does not like pickled vegetables that were part of the brussel sprouts dish, but that is a personal preference. My pork loin dish serving was plentiful. I had been advised that it would be prepared medium. However, it was served well done. The restaurant acknowledged the birthday with a complementary dessert.
Did something change here? I used to love it here but recently the menu changed along with the flavor. The onion soup was devoid of any taste and the steak was very bland. Dessert was amazing but overall not worth the $$$ we paid!
The 3 stars are for the atmosphere, the service, and the menu. It really feels like you're in France! The 2 missing stars are for the prices and the amount of food per serving. Make sure you bring plenty of $$ if you want to eat there, prices are definitely above average. I had pumpkin soup, and it was not very flavorful and there was not a lot of it either. If I'm ever back in Portland, I will not return.
The three starts are for the service staff and atmosphere. They were great. Sadly my duck confit was the worst I’ve ever had. I didn’t think it was possible to dry out a duck confit since it’s slow cooked in fat, but it was hard as a rock and as dried out as an over cooked fast food chicken wing. Even the sharp knife they gave me couldn’t get through it. And the squashes served on the plate were also dry and over cooked. It almost felt like they had prepped it earlier and reheated the dish in the oven, particularly since it came out of the kitchen super fast with an atomically hot plate. The flavor was okay but I couldn’t finish it and ended up going and getting a second meal elsewhere. A real disappointment. I wanted to love this place.
I enjoy McDonald’s more. I guess I’m too American for this place. Not worth the $50.
Great customer BUT worst meal we’ve ever had in Portland. Food was extremely salty (table next to us said the same thing). Best part of my meal was my glass of wine. Escargot was overpriced (you only get 3 for $14). Look elsewhere for a good dinner in Portland.
Atmosphere is beautiful. Wonderful to look out over the city block. The wine was the best part of our meal. We were able to taste a few and choose the best to complement our dishes. However the food was disappointing. We ate the french onion soup, mushroom puff pastry, mussels and steak frites. Everything was flavorless. The onions in the soup were not caramelized. The broth in the mussels had no flavor. It was like a simple fish broth. Overall, we had high expectations and were disappointed by the flavorless food. Service was mediocre. We had to wait a long time to be seated even with a reservation. There was no French bread at a French restaurant because "the delivery didn't come today"! Disappointed.
Overall disappointing experience. French onion soup was fantastic but the steak and frites was an absolute rip off. $34 dollars for flank steak that was undercooked, chewy, and lacking flavor. Half the fries were stuck together. Only reason this wasn't 1 star was because the restaurant itself has a nice atmosphere and because the soup was great.
Came here for a birthday after confirming that dairy allergies could be accommodated. The staff could not confidently tell us what ingredients were in any of the dishes. They went back and forth to the kitchen four times to check the menu, each time incorrectly telling us that certain dishes didn't contain dairy or could be made without. Needless to say it made us nervous when our food came out that it would actually be dairy free. With the price of the food and poor service we just cannot justify coming back. I would recommend if you have an allergy to just go somewhere else.
Better restaurants out there. For the cost, there’s an expectation that wasn’t met. The wine is good, but everything else is not. The ratatouille came out cold, and when it did, it wasn’t good. Just $27 mid-level vegetables with nothing on it. The lobster roll was mostly shrimp. Drinks ordered were left at the bar for 15- 25 minutes. The wine selection is great. Our server forgot our appetizers, but was kind about it. I don’t think it’s all his fault. I think he was doing the best he could. But this restaurant left A LOT to leave desired, and the only reason I didn’t consult the manager was because it was a bachelorette, and didn’t want to cause a scene. It would be fine if the cost was lower, but cost and luxury warrant food and service to match. This simply did not.
The oysters were served warm on a plain tray without ice. The portions were somewhat small which was okay with me, but I think many people wouldn't be satisfied. My main dish -salmon- was plain, slightly undercooked, and my husband's pasta dish was overly salty. The drinks were okay and the service was fine. The best part was getting a table right away without a reservation. Now I know why.
When I made the reservation, I noted that there would be 2 people in our group eating vegan as instructed so that there would be a special meal made for us. Instead what we had was the kitchen scrambling to simply take off the sauces and cheeses from the vegetarian dishes on the menu, leaving us with bland, boring, and unimaginative food. We ordered the endive salad which came with 3 endive leaves, some frisée, and beets, all undressed. The baguette was overly toasted and was only served with butter and no offer of olive oil. The main dish was 3 roasted carrots, a roasted potato, and handful of arugula. Everything had way too much oil and the arugula was so over salted, it was only edible by mixing with the veggies. There were no herbs, spices, or frankly any attempt to make the food taste good. If I had walked in off the street with no prior notice, I may have expected something like what we received, but that fact I reached out in advanced and was assured the advance notice would mean we would have “a dish just for you” only adds to my frustration. Unfortunately, we will never go back. In the future, please do a better job with vegan food. Plant based food is ever more popular and France has wonderful plant based food options.
Offensively bad! The most unimaginative and pedestrian experience I've had in Portland. Service was rubbish. Our appetizer came out cold. Our entrees took nearly 45 minutes to arrive. My boyfriend ended up with one of the saddest burgers we've had the misfortune of seeing. He's not a picky eater by any means, and even he admitted we could've made a better meal at home... in the mircowave... He remarked my plate looked "like a depressing TV dinner". And indeed, it was so wretchedly dry and flavorless. I ultimately had to ask for a better knife in order to cut my steak. We're not tourists, we know Portland, and we know that almost anywhere will provide infinitely better (and likely cheaper) food. Our server offered us house made caramels as a compensation for the long wait time to receive our meals. Even these seemed stale and ended up in the trash.
