Some of the best food I've had in a while. The pointsetta cocktail was so yummy.
Food was very good, the beef fillet you could cut with a butter knife and the chocolate cake was heavenly with a cup of coffee. Staff very attentive as well. Highly recomend.
We went there for a special dinner post graduation and every guest loved their meal. It was cozy, hospitable, and the food and drinks were excellent.
Food and service were excellent, never had a Filet mignon cooked so perfect so moist, years of going to nice restaurants and years of being a server in 5 star restaurants, I was highly impressed . Highly recommend
We moved from Hanawa Falls, NY to Naples, FL eight years ago... My wife and I return every summer and dine at 1844 House several times during each summer season... It's on the top of our list of sit-in restaurants, and we're always delighted that we stop in for the great and expertly prepared food and the beyond friendly service...
Recently hosted a baby shower there, exquisite decor, food, presentation, and service. 1844 is a lovely place for a meal, or an event, and we are so honored to have this in the North Country.
Food was excellent and the service was very good. Its really the little things that they bring between courses for tasting.
The service was outstanding. The staff exceptional. The food was very good and presented well. It's a very good dining experience.
Awesome food, great service, a comfortable and pleasant atmosphere. Will definitely go again when in the area.
Delicious! Exceptional service, decent portions, nice wine selection. Very gluten friendly menu and super-accommodating
Owners are absolutely wonderful! I was checking this place out for a client. They chose somewhere else, but definitely put them on my "Approved Vendors List" for the future.
We had 1844 House cater two events. The food was fantastic, I can’t say enough good things about it. The presentation of the dishes was appealing. They had everything ready when they said they would. It was so nice to have this quality of food and be able to host our family and have all the guests so excited to sit down to to enjoy this level of dining. Thank you 1844 House!
1844 House is a true fine dining experience. Excellent food from a varied menu is coupled with attentive service. They have an extensive wine list featuring quality products from the US, Europe, South America, Australia and New Zealand. This is the place to go for a special celebration with people who appreciate fine food.
Best place to eat hands down in the Canton/Potsdam area. Warm ambiance. Outstanding food and friendly service. I love to eat in the cozy bar area. Was in there a couple of weeks ago and the menu had changed somewhat since I was there last April. They used to have 3 cuts of steak that you could order anyway you like. Wish they would bring that back.
AMAZING food and service!! All around a perfect dining experience for our one year anniversary. The setting was impressively decadent while maintaining a homely feel and the dining room was immaculate. Worth every penny and would highly recommend if you're looking for a fine dining experience.
My husband and I eat here every year on our anniversary and this year we added Valentine’s Day and we are never disappointed. Our server Andrea is always the best!!! However, as phenomenal as the food always is the dinner we had last night was absolutely incredible!!! The lobster cappuccino was probably one of the best flavor combinations I have ever tasted!! It was so good that I wanted more for dessert!!!! The entrees of crusted seared filet mignon and the sherry basted scallops. Mmmm. I hope they make it a permanent thing on the menu!!!! The chefs have certainly outdone themselves again!!! Oh, and to this day their Earl Grey Sorbet still my absolute favorite pallet cleanser. Our favorite restaurant in NY!!!!
It was an excellent meal. The food was delicious. It was locally sourced and made on-site. They provided an appetizer, a pallette cleanser, and chocolates that were all made by the staff. I would like to go back as soon as I can.
Good service, great food. Loved the flavored butter for bread and the palate cleanser. The cucumbers and chocolates are a nice touch. The Salmon was cooked perfectly.
Food, drinks, and service were all excellent. The main course we had was also good, but depending on the menu, don't be afraid to just order a bunch of appetizers to share. We did, but unfortunately failed to save room for dessert.
As vegans, eating out is frustrating, but this place was great! The chef came out to see us and explained the different options she could offer us. Everyone was very helpful. We definitely recommend this place. Great atmosphere and friendly staff.
It was my 2nd visit to your Restaurant The service, food and Atmosphäre is absolutely fantastic our server was Christine she is a very friendly young Lady extremely considered, as well as your staff at the Bar and or your Maitre‘D. The Lamb Chops extremely tasty ,my husband ordered the Steak, frites, salad excellent Our friends ordered Bayou which very delicious (I have ordered the dish in December) We are from Canada we celebrated yesterday our 10th Anniversary what a wonderful celebration, with Friends,Family and a wonderful Meal. We will return.
Wonderful experience in every way. The staff is amazing!
What a wonderful gem in the country! I’ve been here for some meetings and the staff are phenomenal and the food- wow! It’s the BEST! I really want to come back some time to see the new barn area that has been renovated for eating/seating and live music!!! This place would be a great getaway!!
What an amazing dinner! I guess when I heard about this place I didn't realize that it was course style. Beautiful and tasty cuisine. I went there for valentines day with my girlfriend and every part of that meal was excellent. A quaint house, beautiful decor, and a candlelit dinner.
1844 House is a favorite in St Lawrence county, serving local ingredient, seasonal food. Had the smoked pork loin stuffed with apple and sausage stuffing over spinach, with a espgnole sauce. Tender, delicious, seasonings were perfect. Prices can't be beat for the quality of the dishes.
Food is always a 10/10 love it here
Always great food. All of the entrees as well as salads and desserts we had(4) were fantastic. Kudos to a North Country restaurant who buys local and serves ***** meals.
All of our groups meals were excellent. The service and beverages are on par with the food. I'm curious about serving couscous with piri piri. That seems illogical but given the quality of the food we tried maybe that works? I lean more towards serving rice with piri piri. Maybe next time I'll give it a try.
Thank you for making the dinner for my parents' 70th anniversary party a huge success last night. The food was delicious and the staff was wonderful! Wish I didn't live 200 miles away.
This is my go-to restaurant for every special occasion. The food is made with fresh homegrown ingredients, tastes so good, and the presentation is phenomenal.
Didn't expect to find this gem in the middle of rural upstate NY. Of course, I only have experienced it once, but the food was excellent, bartender was creative, and the staff were all well trained and matched with the elegant decor. Would definitely go out of my way to visit again.
They are the kindest people! And the food!!! Is exceptional. You would think you we're at a five-star restaurant in New York City! I recommend it to everyone, such a great fine dining experience!
Love this place. It's just right. Oh, the French fries! They will make you come back every time for them. It's also the only place in Northern NY that doesn't cook salmon to oblivion. Delicious!
The 1844 house always impresses me. It never fails to offer great food, a beautiful atmosphere and incredible service. Alex is a kickass waitress who genuinely cares about giving the best possible service and is just all-around absolutely wonderful. She’s a huge part of why I enjoy coming here! Teri cares so much and so deeply about this place and it is evident in every move she makes. If you’re looking for something beautiful, comfortable, and delicious, you certainly don’t want to miss out on the 1844 House.
This restaurant itself, although somewhat out of the way, is a charming place to eat out. It has exceptionally good food, bordering on the fantastic. Some of the dishes can be said to rival those found in a Michelin star restaurant. Located on farmland, they have decided to grow many of the herbs and some of the vegetables themselves, which offers an incredible freshness and flavor to many of the dishes they make, as well as giving the chef a creative freedom that makes for a simply unique and delicious menu. The cocktails and drinks, as well as the desserts are insanely good, but the whole experience is simply a must for those who have never been. The staff is very friendly and prompt. I must say that the fillet of beef is by far the best dish on the menu and, having traveled over a thousand miles to eat out there, and I must say it was definitely worth the trip.
100% delicious!!!! We ordered the Steak Alfredo and Fried Calamari, and cheese cake for dessert. Everything single item was absolutely delicious. The servers were attentive, very cozy atmosphere, and the Chilean wine amazing! Definitely come to this place!!!!
This is a nice little gem that's hidden away. My wife and I stumbled upon it while traveling for our 28th wedding anniversary. The food was amazing, staff were incredibly friendly and the building was adorable. I would recommend 100%
Arguably the best dining experience that you can find in the North Country. We've been here a few times, early in the evenings to being the last party to be served and it didn't matter - the food was always consistently good and staff exceptionally courteous and mindful. You can't go wrong with any of their entrees - the salmon is amazing, the filet of beef is surprising delicious, the risotto is good but I'll admit it's the buffalo shrimp appetizers that kept us returning. I'm not sure what they put in that buffalo sauce but it's the best I've ever tasted (which means it's probably something simple!).
Had a wonderful birthday dinner for my wife. We all had a signature summer cocktail all made with fresh ingredients. For appetizers we had the buffalo shrimp (our favorite) and the tapas platter. I had the Mongolian BBQ shrimp which was new thing for me at this restaurant and it was great, really good noodle especially. They did a specially plated dessert for my wife to celebrate her birthday. Always a treat to visit here. Always great service and food.
The food and service here is amazing. You can tell the chefs really care about what they are making for their customers and everything Is delicious. My family came in town to visit and I had to take them here for dinner! They loved it all too! Definitely will be back!
My husband and I had a lovely dinner on 8/5/23. After our last year’s bad food experience, we wouldn’t have come back. However, our daughter bought us a gift card. We forgot to tell her that we were very disappointed with the 1844’s food after the new owner. Now we are glad she did so we could give the new owners a second chance. We learned that the old chef came back. Our appetizer to main dinner and dessert were fabulous. It is the most elegant place in the north country. I would highly recommend anyone for an elegant dinner out to the 1844 House. October 2022 review: Under this new management, the 1844 House food is little more than a diner food. A special for the day my husband and I went was a cheap tilapia fish at $31 per plate. It came with ~1 1/2 cup of clumpy jasmine rice over white bean with few greens. The jasmine rice looked like it came of a steam bag that over shadowed in the amount for featured fish. The food taste was as bad as it’s awful display. Though they advertise as a fine dining in the North Country, their flatware were similar to local diners - simple stamped silverware. Don’t waste your appetite and $$ to dine at the 1844 House.
Literally the only great l restaurant in the north country. Doesn't matter it you're as far flung as Tupper Lake or Keene, this is the place you want to be if you're looking good food. Extra stars for the fact that it's relatively cheap. My wife and I still daydream about the buffalo shrimp appetizer. Good luck getting a reservation during late spring though.
Good fine dining. Staff is nice. Good conversations. Sometimes their soups rock, other times not. Sorbets are always phenomenal. Entrees are always high quality and mostly delish. Desserts hit or miss.
This is an amazing restaurant. They have amazing food. The service is second to none. There is such a nice at home atmosphere that I have never experienced at a fine dining restaurant. They make you feel welcome. The owners are always there and want you to have a great experience. They are the nicest couple. Everyone should go there at least once.
Simply the best restaurant around. The food is always spectacular with the service to match. I have tried maybe 7 dishes there so far and I would be hard pressed to say which was best because they are all so good. The french onion soup is the best I've ever had. You can't go wrong with anything.
Excellent service, excellent meal, excellent drinks! The very best birthday dinner I’ve ever treated someone too! And the cost for a four course meal was very much under what I thought it would be. I cannot believe how low the price was for how excellent the meal, ambiance, and service was. Thank you
We love the food. We had fried Calamari as a starter but I wish they had spicy marinara sauce instead of the sweet sauce. Otherwise, everything was good.
This is the best dining experience in the North Country, don't miss a chance to give it a try if you're up here. It is very expensive, but worth it. Reservations always recommended, but they do have walk in availability as well.
We chose to celebrate finishing the audio mix of Devon Eriksen’s “Theft of Fire” at the swankiest restaurant in these here parts we could find. We were NOT disappointed. Had the Pork chop experience and the special of ravioli with filet. Unbelievable food. Amy Conger, head chef, knocks it outta the park.
What a dinner!!! So good. One of the best places to eat in the area. My only complaint is the portions are kinda small. I don't mind paying more. The food was beyond good and the service was fantastic. My only complaint was the time it took to get a drink. Almost 30 mins each time. I was drinking doubles of top shelf bourbon. So was my colleagues. You would think they would want to get those out quickly.
The flavors, the LOCAL feel good food, soft welcoming atmosphere, phenomenal staff and Landscape, just......Chef's 💋!!! Kudos and Thank you!
I loved our experience at 1844. I made a reservation for there only outside table which is a beautiful living pergola with concord grapes. We were able to check out "the barn" which is there outdoor seating area available on Thursdays. I think its gorgeous inside and out. The owner and chef were so kind and our waitress KayKay was the sweetest. We got the cheese plate , the steak burger , and 1844 salmon, as well as that nights special for dessert. My favorite drink there is the hibiscus margaritas. We had a cute little sample of what looked to me to be a brussel sprout fritter with some type of mushroom gravy!!! I would eat them like i eat fried cheese curd it was soooo good. Our pallet cleanser was also a banger. A beautiful lemon lime sorbet . These small touches are what make this place so special in my opinion.
Everytime we've eaten here its been amazing, fresh and delicious! The specials are always unique and the food is cooked and seasoned just right. The wait staff is friendly and amazing! If you're looking for a place to celebrate basically anything I can't recommend 1844 House enough.
Excellent atmosphere within the original layout of the old structure. The food presentation and taste was outstanding. Yes, you are going to pay more for the meal here compared to surrounding restaurants. The pork shank was an outstanding meal. My wife and I were ok with the price point because of the quality and presentation of the food. It’s an experience, not fast food. Take your time have conversation enjoy the ambience. My only suggestion would be to have some Italian wine varieties at reasonable price. There were a lot of California wines to choose from.
Everything about our dinner experience was perfect. The food is amazing (thank you Chef Joe!!) and our waitress, Jordan, was spectacular. She clearly enjoys her job because she was so friendly, fun & provided amazing service. Every single thing we got was amazing! I cannot recommend the risotto enough (everyone wished they had gotten it!). Highly recommend!
Our party of five loved each and every dish that we ordered. The server was excellent! He was very accommodating and we have a family member with a wheat allergy and he took great care to make sure she was safe. The sorbet palette cleanser and the chocolates at the end of the meal were a nice touch. The decor is very homey and comfortable. We have two children attending college in the North country and have found the dining choices in the area very limited. This place is a gem!
Amazing!! We were super hungry upon arriving, so we scoured for a good restaurant. We came here because it looked great - and we were right!! They had a great selection and food, with the most decadent delicious flourless chocolate cake. Amazing little taste cleanser after appetizers and little chocolate treat at the end. Hope to come back!!
Although we chose possibly the busiest weekend to visit for our first time, we had an amazing experience. It was parents' week at the local colleges and although the dining rooms were busy, they were not overrun or chaotic; there was always one or two empty tables- which proves the management are knowledgeable about spacing their reservations, and the wait staff were able to be attentive to everyone without being overwhelmed. Our server was incredibly friendly and happy, quick but very attentive and eager to make suggestions and answer questions. The atmosphere is incredibly cozy and eclectic in the main house, and more modern and spacious in the rear dining room where we were seated. We had a lovely view next to the window of the property and gardens. All of the food was exquisite, and very clear that the chef and kitchen staff are well seasoned in fine dining operations. We ordered from every course, and happily took leftovers home. I would encourage the management to invest in an espresso machine for cappuccino etc, but that did not detract from our wonderful visit.
We were visiting St. Lawrence U and were looking for a nice place to eat after we arrived. Being from an area with excellent restaurants we are always weary of local places when traveling. This is a very nice little restaurant along the main drag between Canton and Potsdam. We were very pleased. Nice, slightly upscale restaurant in the middle of farmland. The waiter was very friendly and made us feel very comfortable. We all really liked our meals and were impressed with our meals. I had the special fish and chips, my wife had the salmon, and my daughter had the French onion soup (which was excellent) and Gnocchi. We would certainly recommend 1844 house if you live in the area or visiting.
This is by far one of the best restaurants in the North Country. The service is very professional and prompt. We thoroughly enjoyed the filet and meatloaf entrees with the steak tips appetizer. All of dishes were outstanding and beautifully presented. Our kids attend the local university and we look forward to visiting 1844 next time we’re back in town. Thank you for being such a great choice (where there aren’t many) and surviving the pandemic.
Such a wonderful place! Dinner was fantastic with friendly and efficient service, as always! We love it there and always go when we are in town. So sad that the owners are selling. They worked so hard building this business and their excellent reputation. Food is first rate and we love their attention to detail. Whomever buys this restaurant will be getting a gem. Our best of luck to Brian and Jenny and thank you for the wonderful memories we have of the times we spent there through the years. ❤️
We happened to be about 10 minutes away when the restaurant was opening and found it from a Google search. I visited with my six year old and ordered the French onion soup and Caesar salad [available in a half price/half portion during the first hour of service]. What a perfect opportunity for my six year old son have his first fine dining experience. Kelly was a sweet server and very accommodating with my little guy. I believe that I might have stumbled upon our anniversary destination!
Good food, great ambiance, friendly waitreses, an oasis in this restaurant-desert small town called Potsdam NY. Yes, pricey compared to other places in town, but quite worth it. I had fantastic lamb dish and melt-in-your-mouth flourless chocolate cake. So yummy! And try their early dining option, too.
We never got to be Inside the restaurant the reception we were at was held in their barn,a this a laid-back cocktail reception. Kinda neat but it was sure hot. Old barn-no air. Fun though.
We drove four hours to this restaurant for a family party of relatives who live nearby and frequent this place alot. I took my girlfriend here (we met in college nearby) for surf & turf in 1987 and now we've been married 31 years. We had the whole Christmas decorated warm, comfortable and glowing back room to ourselves as well as a custom menu and specially prepared allergen-free dishes. The food, service and atmosphere were top-notch for this gem of the North Country. I'm docking one star only because as far as my premises search turned up there was only a single one-at-a-time men's room and this did not seem to be enough for a restaurant full of people full of good food and drink. I'll adjust if merchant wishes to correct me.
My 2nd time at this restaurant.Service was excellent and food phenomenal. My one complain is the wine quantity. Seemed to be very stingy on the amount of wine served.even though we paid $8.00 for a glass of Merlot.Amount served was not even half of the glass like other places. Food was expensive but worth the money. We stopped going for over a year because the wine portion was not how it should be. Hoping the next time we visit, they should pay attention to the correct amount to serve.I have been to Restaurants all over the world during the 50 years of my adult life and this is the first time I noticed the "non-proper way of serving wine".
The food was really good. The Pomme Frites could use a little something extra for the price. But we each had the short rib burger and it was amazing. Obviously the food is priced high for the area but they do include some little extras for a great overall experience and the food is good.
Buffalo shrimp are large but need to be crisp in my opinion and they seemed hotter than usual. Did not like the rice paper on the mango wrap and some shrimp or other meat inside may have improved the taste. The steaks have always been excellent as well as the desserts. Melt in your mouth items. Thank you and good luck on your new endeavors.
Typically love this restaurant, the service, and food. This night, however, fell short with the service and made us really disappointed. Called to make a reservation several days before the day we wanted (during their open business hours). No one answered so I left a message. My mistake, I should have kept calling and not left a message (it said it would call back). I called the day of to check our reservation and they didn’t have us down at all, and could not get us in until 8pm. I said that was fine, as we didn’t mind the later time. However, when we sat down to eat, our server was super inattentive, would ask if we needed anything then forget to bring it (had to ask for something 4 times), didn’t refill waters often, and the worst, rushed us throughout the meal. Really makes me mad after I called for the original reservation to be at 6pm. When I asked what time they closed after being offered the 8pm slot, they assured me they didn’t stop seating until 9pm. If this was the case, the server should not be rushing us, especially at this price point and expected service. Really sad because our previous experiences have been the best, especially with the one waitress we typically have (forgot her name, but she is amazing!). Hopefully, this was a one off experience.
Lovely menu, I appreciate how the specials change weekly. The food is usually quite good, but we've definitely had meals that missed the mark in terms of preparation/seasoning. The cocktails are also always a disappointment, we usually stick to the wine. The flourless chocolate cake however, is not to be missed! It's decadent. Love the atmosphere and the service is always very fast and friendly.
Strengthes: atmosphere, wait staff very attentive, varied menu, honor reservations, and chef personally visits each table. Disappointments: had an early reservation and still waited two hours for main course, which was tough as there were three children in the group. One entre was not prepared correctly (meal was comped). Bread of the day was tasteless and dense. Interesting overall highs and lows, but no one went home hungry and would definitely go again. Glad this area has an 1844 House as a dining option. Best wishes!
Food is excellent! It is pricey and limited on entrée choices. The chef visits the customers tables. That's something these days. The waitress was very friendly and accommodating. It is set up in rooms in an old house, which I found the seating a bit too close together. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and plan on returning. More than likely on special occasions only.
Would have expected a higher level of sophistication at the price level they charge. Service was fine and the waitress was kind but couldn't help us with the minor wine spill on the paper table covering telling us "it was nothing to worry about".... I'm guessing since it was on the paper covering. Our napkin helped contain the dripping. The food was good, but again would have expected more at the price. The steak frites was on par for more of a summer lunch special then a dinner I was expecting. The gallon of cold greens served on the top of the pre cut steak rendered the dish cold. Wish it had been served with the fries my daughter had gotten for an appetizer than the cold thin crispy curly fries it had come with. The chicken pie and onion soup were delicious.
It's ok. Stomach hurt an hour after eating here.. Not sure if it was me or the seafood that I had. It's cute though. Parking was tight. They carded me and I didn't have ID but not that big deal. I probably come back for drinks. Not sure if the food is worth it. Nothing worth writing home about.
New owners. This place used to have top notch quality chef, but now has a crack cook that uses too much salt. Things are edible, nice atmosphere, and the servers are good. Food is mediocre now.
We has a reservation for 6, the food didn't come out until 755. The food was good but no compensation for the long wait. The waitress seemed to have no clue what was going on. Could not tell us specials or soup of the day. Asked her to check. Never did. Was not impressed. Hot inside and very old.
We ate there in early May 2023. We had a large group. Service was horrible and food inconsistent. Two of the dinners didn't show up. In hindsight, the restaurant could have\should have proposed a limited menu when we made the reservation. The reservation was made weeks in advanced so they had plenty of time to plan. Disappointing!
I was so loooking forward to the food. But the food was such a disappointment. Incredibly salty crostinis, overly salted Hummus and feta cheese, my entree was duck, not with a crispy skin, but rubbery and the whole piece pink and undercooked, loaded onto a soggy sweetpotato pancake that was drawned in a super sweet and salty sauce. The Brussel sprouts were shredded, as was the romaine lettuce for the Cesar Salad. Why? The result was not optically appealing. I did not have to pay for my entree, thank you. The sweet potato cheese cake was wonderful.
Sadly we had a bad experience in the restaurant, the food is very good (appetizers) but we got here at 7:30 pm and as I write this review 9:07 pm and the food has not arrive, the waitress is very friendly and apologized on Behalf of the kitchen and we appreciate that but we are starting to the point we are not hungry anymore. Edit: the food got here at 9:20, the food is delicious
This place has come downhill since sold. Same price but tasteless cilantro chicken. Side dishes flavorless. I can make microwave rice at home. Cafeteria food at this point.
This place may bear the same name, but it isn't the same place. I went late week with a party of four. Despite not being busy, service was extremely slow (2 hours to receive main entrees). And everyone in my party had the same complaint with the food: extremely heavy on the salt. I have no issue paying for a good meal, but the prices don't match the quality or service.
Very disappointed with the meal.Very fancy presentation but the food was dry and shrimp overcooked.Very stingy on the glass of wine as well.Meals served were expensive for the quality presented.Been there a couple of times before and they were not too bad. But bringing my wife for our Anniversary Dinner and expecting a high quality food was a big let down.Service however were very good.
Last nights dinner was very poor, I had ordered a rare steak and fries, I received a well done steak, with 12 McDonalds French fries, steak was returned and the new steak was either frozen or microwaved, you could not squeeze one bit of juice out of it. For 26 dollars it was certainly a disappointment. Beer was good. Service was good, But you expect more for the money.
The food was disappointing. Service was not that great. The waitress had too many tables to serve and could not attend our table. Regarding the high price they charge, neither service nor food was good enough. No idea why everybody keeps complementing this restaurant. Maybe too much praise has corrupted their quality of service.
If you like salt, this is your place. Our meals had varying degrees of quality, but far too inconsistent for the high prices they charge. Unfortunately, I had to return the Bayou dish because it was so salty it was truly inedible. I'm not that picky. It's probably only the second dish I've ever returned in 50 years of eating out. But this was bad. Way, way too much salt. Others in my party agreed when they tasted it. To the credit of the restaurant, they did take it back and removed it from my bill. The tofu dish was tasty, but the tofu was drowning in the sauce and some thought the tofu was too soft, I thought it was ok, but again too salty. We all agreed the noodles were excellent. The roasted garlic bulb appetizer came out cold, which surprised us. It was fairly tasty, but again salty. The cheeses fell apart too easily (not spreadable) and the crostini also fell apart and cracked when you tried to top it. There also weren't enough of the crostini and there was a $2 charge for more. The mixed grill entree was ok, but certainly not worth $42. The beef was the best part, but the BBQ chicken was completely pedestrian. Credit the restaurant for subbing out shrimp since one of us has a shellfish allergy. Non alcoholic drinks were good and priced well with no charge tea refills, a bonus. Unfortunately, my first drink had a fruit fly floating around in it, but it was replaced by the waitress without question. The cheesecake with blueberry compote was good, but $12 for one slice. Being from New York, I found it too soft and wet, but others in our party loved it. Service was friendly, but she was busy, so at times it fell short of where it should be at this price point. No real complaint here, just an observation of the cost versus the outcome. The atmosphere is nice looking overall (too bad the beautiful trees that were out front got cut down), but we sat in the newer addition back room and the noise was extremely loud. All surfaces in the room are hard and the chatter from patrons reverberates throughout the room and you can hardly hear people at your own table! It became a joke between us during the meal. Lol. Lastly, I think charging a credit card surcharge is pretty tacky at any establishment, but especially at one where the meal runs $50 per person. Unfortunately, we won't return. 1844 House isn't what it used to be.
I have had both positive and negative food experiences with 1844 House. Tonight we ordered dinner as take out and asked to substitute fries, unsalted, for mashed potatoes. I understand the "up charge" concept but 25.00 for two partial orders of fries that were salted and put into the sauce included in the entree really seems over the top. Soggy fries are the worst. I called the restaurant to share my disappointment and got a terse response about the soggy fries and a hang-up before I could say goodbye. Disappointing.
Second time there received appetizer then sat and watched tables around us receive apps. and entrees after they were seated 1/2 hr after. With no response or apology. Left without eating.
Very disappointing service. My girlfriend and I were very excited to eat here for Valentine's. When we were seated we were informed that they had run out of 1 of the appetizers, 2 of the entrees and 1 of the desserts. My girlfriend asked for an entree sized salad with salmon. The menu very clearly states that you may upgrade any of the salads to an entree size and add various meats for an additional charge. When the salad arrived it was the normal salad size and was missing the salmon. When asked, our waitress stated that was the only size that salad came in. We elected not to make a big deal about it. Eventually my entree came out and a salmon entree came out for my girlfriend. It was clearly a misunderstanding. When we alerted our waitress to the mistake she acted sympathetic but did little to correct the mistake. All she offered was the take back the salmon and to chop it up and put it in another salad. My girlfriend was already full from the first salad and she did not want to cause a scene on Valentine's Day so she just asked if it could be put into a box to go. When we got the bill, the salmon entree was charged in full. There wasn’t any compensation for the mistake. I understand we paid for the food we received but it wasn’t the food that we ordered. That salmon accounted for over 1/3 of the total bill and we never asked for it. We expected better from such a fine restaurant. The food was delicious but the service ruined the whole experience. Will not be returning.
The setting is not worth the price or the food. I had the steak with pasta, the flavor was okay but the steak was too tough to eat. I paid a prime price for a poor meal.
If you are ready to wait for few hours for stake and salad you are more than welcome to enjoy this restaurant
Save your money and drive to watertown!! Arrived at 630 was immediately seated in the first hr we got our appetizer and soup and salad. Then didn't see the waiter for 25 minutes until he brought our sorbet another fifteen minutes later he brings out our entrees.my wife's looked great but my Rib eye special and twice baked potato looked sunburned with fresh vegetables. You couldn't have cut it with a scalpel. So after two hours and ten minutes I ended up at five guys.
So the seafood bisque was pretty decent, and that's about all the positive things I have to say. We had called to make a reservation on 5pm Tuesday and left a voicemail asking about the best time for a party of 5 during valentines day weekend, and after a lot of back and forth we were finally able to make a reservation for the 13th. Took three days to finalize a reservation, that is ridiculous... NOW lets get on to the service, we were sat almost immediately around 7pm and remained seated for 30 minutes without menus and the waitress finally realized after stopping by for the third time... We ordered soups and entrees and proceeded to wait another 30 minutes for 3 soups. Soups were acceptable, but I wish I didn't have to look at the bowl on my table for the next hour because the waitress decided to disappear and not check on us. We might've seen her about 5 about times in over a 2 hour span. Waitress mixed up orders and didn't even have to ask us what we thought of everything. Pretty obvious when the plates are full that we didn't enjoy anything. We watched other tables and they didn't seem to have any of the problems that we did. Again, we waited for the waitress to come and check on us once we got our food but she was probably dilly dallying. She made sure to bring our check out right away though and didn't ask our opinion on the food, she made us feel unwelcome and like she just wanted us to leave. Then the food! Fries and bisque were okay and that's about all the good things I can say. If you want a medium rare cooked steak you might wanna ask for it to be blue or alive or they'll send out whatever they have in mind. None of our 5 orders seemed to have been properly cooked, new kitchen staff perhaps? All of the food came out like they just microwaved it 15 minutes ago and let it sit before bringing it out. This could have probably all been avoided if our food didn't sit for so long before we got it. The potatoes were clumpy and cold once they came out and my steak tasted like it was iced, blended up, and molded back together. It tasted so artificial it was not worth my the energy to open my jaw and eat it. We definitely will not be coming back and I recommend checking out the Pizza Hut right down the road, better food AND better prices AND better service AND you cannot out pizza the hut.
I made a reservation to celebrate a special occasion with my family. It was our first time here and last! They took TWO hours to serve us our meals (it was not crowded, 1/2 tables empty) and the steaks, when they finally came out, were cold. One of the steaks was also cooked well done yet ordered medium. We didn’t want to wait another 2 hours for a new one, so we left highly disappointed. I have no clue why everyone raves about this place…
