Was surprisingly good for a quick stop lunch. Good atmosphere. Lottery playing on the tv the whole time. Very sweet people in a small town. I would stop in again. The burger was well prepared and the bun was not just a cheap store bought one. Was more like sourdough or something. 👍
Best place to stop by and enjoy cozy homestyle cooking with lots of heart into it. Absolutely loved it
Authentic and original small town restaurants homemade food. Great prices and great service
We found it searching the internet; casual, greeted immediately, warmly; great service; incredible variety of home cooked meals. We picked an appetizer “bear droppings”- was really good. Spouse and I picked hot sandwiches- very good, did I say service was great and the prices more than right.
Good comfort food just off I87. We stopped to get food to go which they were happy to do for us. I enjoyed my cheeseburger and potato salad. The potato salad included generous amounts of egg. I'm always impressed when potato salad rises above the bland and goopy. My friend had trouble managing his club sandwich with one hand. I didn't hear him complain though.
We stop for a bio break and snack. Got the cheesiest mozzarella sticks ever. So good! And the coffee was good too, comparing to other on the road dinners.
It is a busy Sunday morning. The waitress (Shelby) is doing a good job of taking orders, getting drinks , busing tables, and taking payments. She is polite and works with a sense of urgency. The menu is basic fare, eggs, pancakes, French toast, omelettes, home fries and the like. The food is good, and plenty of it. The prices are reasonable. I am not a local, but have been coming here for years. My Grand Father brought me here for the first time in 1966 on what would be come one of many outings. The food hasn't changed over the years and hope the Black Bear will be here for years to come.
It was my second time eating here and I must say one of my favorite places for breakfast in adirondack.
Just had breakfast here, very simple menu and food, but so delicious! Our waitress was nice and quick and the food didn't take long to come out at all. We were stopping on the road, and barely spent half an hour here. Restaurant is clean and homey.
Great value resteraunt for a good & filling breakfast. The omelets are huge. Waitresses were attentive and kept our coffees full, always worth an extra star. Orders were received very quickly despite the busy Saturday morning crowd.
Absolutely delicious! I've been trying out different places up here and they are horrible, no flavor and the service is horrible. Black bear hit the spot. Food was delicious and the waitress Angel was super sweet and helpful. Will definitely come again
Saw this place as we were taking a scenic winter ride up to Newcomb and back and stopped for lunch. Wife and I could barely finish half our club sandwich. Good food, great wait staff. Everything was spaced out for covid prevention and felt safe eating there. Would go again. They do accept credit cards as well for I believe a $10 minimum.
This is great little hidden gem. My family stayed at Schroon lake and our lunch here was the best meal we had on our trip. My wife had the turkey club and it was not just processed lunch meat, it was real turkey! The service was better than we expected, and we will definitely be coming back. .
I loved it. I loved the old, history feeling of it when I walked in. The waitresses were really nice and attentive. It was busy, so there was a small wait, but it was still fine. I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich with tomato and lettuce. It was really good - a lot of flavor, which sometimes you get bland chicken and what you put on it helps give it flavor- not this one. I could have eaten it without mayo! So good! And everyone else enjoyed their meals as well! Def a must
Great place and friendly staff. I'd like to see a better steak but im sure its hard for them to get better products in a sleepy town.
My wife and I stopped on our way back from Elizabethtown. Good Service, Good Food. Good place to eat.
I’ve been coming here for a few years and I gotta say, it may not look pretty but damn is it good. It is without a doubt the best food I’ve had in the area, and not only that the waitress is so sweet and the service is great. Absolutely no complaints
I drove 165 miles round trip today, ( 10/1/22 ) because I hadn't been here since I was a teenager. I had a terrific server named Sasha, very friendly and fast too. I ordered the Philly cheese steak sandwich with fries and pickle slices, and the selection was more than enough for me, I was stuffed!!! Friendly staff and customers, and today was the first day of new ownership too. I will be returning soon with others in tow to enjoy the Black Bear Restaurant 🐻. Thanks again Sasha... 😉👍🏻
We went Friday night and sat at the bar for drinks. The bartender was super nice, made us feel right at home and made a delicious white Russian. Karaoke was fun and prices were reasonable. Thanks for a fun time.
Got a Papa Bear burger and onion rings, wife got the Chicken Cordon Blue sandwich and fries. Both the onion rings and fries were EXCELLENT! Super crispy and delicious. Rest of the food was great, and so was the waitress. A++
I don't know how anyone could give this place a bad review. We have been there countless times and they always delivered. The food was excellent and the staff was attentive.
Good food. Quick service. They were even taining someone new and very busy Sunday lunch hour. They stayed calm and collective and gave our table of 4 great service
They have one of the best turkey clubs I've ever had. Food is good and it's a lovely little place to stop for lunch.
Sat at the lunch counter & our server, Stephanie, was quite fun & funny. Really enjoyed our tasty food. I got the Bear Droppings! Tater tots covered in melted cheddar cheese, crumbled, crispy bacon, & drizzled with ranch dressing. Son's burger was juicy & cooked to perfect medium-rare. Glad we stopped at this rustic diner.
The food was great. We all had breakfast and it was fresh, hot and cooked to perfection only outshined by the service provided by our waitress. If you like a traditional American diner atmosphere this place is for you. Will not disappoint!
Club sandwich was delicious! Highly recommend you have the tater tots for a side. Lots of local flavor!
I love traveling the U.S. and elsewhere looking for down home local atmosphere and good food. This morning I ate at the Black Bear Restaurant in Pottersville, NY. It was bursting with local character, friendly conversation and delicious breakfast food. Shared dishes were served with welcoming grace and it was the best all around breakfast I've had. Breakfast was a delicious mix of soft and tasty scrambled eggs, toasted corned beef hash, perfectly buttered rye toast, crispy hash browns, orange juice, coffee and the fluffiest buttermilk pancakes ever (take home).
Great open face turkey sandwich, fresh roasted turkey breast and great mashed potatoes. This place has been around a while due to their good food. Definitely try whole in the area.
The prettiest little cabin and the food was even better. Definitely recommended.
I had their breaded chicken sandwich last evening and it was AMAZING! Way to go in the kitchen! The bartender, Adam, was also very attentive and friendly!
Was looking for a place to stop for lunch on the way to Vermont. After a couple hours of not finding anything open on the way through the Adirondack mountains we came across the Blake Bear Restaurant. The service was excellent, food came out shockingly fast and it was delicious. I highly recommend. I had the BLT and quite enjoyed it.
the bar tender made the whole night a amazing judy the cook did an amazing job ... if any of you skiers want a nice place to feed your family's stop there ...you cant go wrong 👌
We love coming here after hiking. Yesterday, my mom and I went hiking and were looking for somewhere to eat that was open on Thanksgiving. The Black Bear was not only open, but had adorable lights strung up, fireplace scenes on the TVs, and an amazing Thanksgiving dinner spread, including pie. The server was friendly and welcoming and didn’t bat an eye at our muddy boots. She even let us take leftovers.
Very cute mom and pop style setting, good was fresh, cooked exactly as ordered and came out very quick. Great spot for a quick bite, highly recommend!
We were on the road on a Sunday and knew we would not find anything open down the road. The very nice lady there fixed us great sandwiches & Cole slaw with everything we would need to eat while traveling. It was all fresh and wonderful, just like her!!!
Visited twice once for dinner, the second time for drinks & snacks. Food was great, I recommend the gravy fries. The fried halibut, also worth it! My wife & are from Wisconsin & this was the bar experience we were looking for! I'd call this place a dive bar, but to be clear that's high praise.
On way home from Mooers Forks NY was looking for a place to eat. Came across here on the GPS search. We stopped in. Great food, great environment, friendly staff. Food was quick to come out. We came in after the lunch rush. Will definitely go back again. I got the homemade meatloaf with mashed potatoes and gravy with very delicious carrots. My fiance got liver and onions with mashed potatoes gravy and carrots.
Saw Black bear on the way back from Schroon lake. Waitress was very friendly, and the food came out so fast. I had the meatloaf dinner it was very good with real mashed potatoes with red skins and delicious brown gravy, kraft Mac and cheese for my daughter which is perfect because she doesn't like the fancy kind, husband had a papa bear burger and fries good sized portion and he said very good, and my son had chicken qusadillas which he said were fair. We will def be back. Always a fan of down home country food.
Just a late breakfast stop. Food was fine but very slow to get out of the kitchen. Service was friendly, but a little inattentive. Coffee mugs empty 10 minutes before food arrived which took over 30 minutes. Perhaps a little short staffed in the kitchen on a mid Sunday morning. Glad we weren't in a hurry. Worth a try. Been there forever for a reason.
In my time I enjoy reviewing fine establishments, primarily food ones. This diner, although a little old, served the food at a good pace with a delicious spicy cauliflower appetizer followed by the main course which, for me consisted of a delicious well done burger. They were extremely generous with the fries which were crispy and lightly salted. The mac and cheese was clearly from a craft mac and cheese box but still tasted fantastic. Along with incredible service the vibe was pretty good and it wasn't too loud or too quiet at any one time. The waitress went back and forth with our drinks 3 times without saying anything. Overall, great place to bring kids and or adults. 4 and a half stars (extra half is for the amazing waitress)
Quick lunch stop on our way to vacation. Hubby had an open faced turkey sandwich and I had a French dip. Both were good, and the place was pretty busy. Our server seemed overworked, she was the only person waiting tables most of the time.
I'm from Long Island, so a place like this isn't considered fancy by any means. But honestly, the food was great. Basic breakfast food, done right. Prices were good too. I really loved the biscuits and gravy. The carpets were also very clean. You don't normally see carpet in a restaurant. But to my surprise it was clean. It's definitely a good place to check out. It's in the middle of nowhere, and no other places were close by. So if you're in the area, you don't have much of a choice.
We were in the dining area for dinner. The bar is a different entrance. Decor could use updating and that is the only negative. I had the grilled chicken caprese sandwich with fries and my husband had the open faced hot roast beef dinner. Both were delicious and satisfying. Laura, the one and only server at the time, was amusing and she was awesome; making sure we had every thing we needed and always checked on us. With only one cook, the food came out amazingly fast. If you're hungry it's a great place to stop.
Down home cooking with servings for a large appetite. Great way to start your day if your traveling the Northway. The biscuits and gravy were well done and the eggs over easy were perfect.
After a camping trip, and heading home we decided on lunch at Black Bear Restaurant. It was Labor Day, most places were closed. Therefore, it was very busy and the restaurant and staff doing an amazing job serving everyone. Our grandkids and we really enjoyed our food. Just want to recognize the staff for your hard work and great attitude.
It is okay , a bit dated but staff is nice. The food i have had was good.
Fast friendly service, good breakfast food at nearly lunch time, good price. Local regulars hanging out, everyone knows everyone else, they didn't mind me barging into their conversation at the diner counter.
The locals seem to like this place and so didn’t we while attending Americade in Lake George. But to our surprise it is up for sale for $580k. Always had a good breakfast from here and the elders are always eager to ask us out of towners questions about our bikes. A must stop for breakfast while still under old ownership.
Young lady was friendly and she was knowledgeable about the food and the area.
Was quiet on a Sunday night. Our waitress, Stephanie was a really good sport, joking around with our whole table. We all had burgers, Mama Bears and Papa Bears with tater tots or twisty fries. Satisfying post hike dinner!
Solid dining choice. Service and food prep were prompt on a March Friday night. Pleasant conversation with other diners. Waitress was nice and knowledgeable and efficient. Food was hot and tasty. Bear in the bar is a nice touch. Ruben and wings and mama burger and fries and tots all good choices for us.
I had a very a pleasant experience here. Staff was very kind, service was fast, and the food was tasty. I got the meatloaf and enjoyed it. Boyfriend got the club with their twisty fries - the fries were spectacular. There was also a attached bar that was pumping some good tunes. We didn't hang out there, but it seemed like a good atmosphere. There is only one stall for the ladies bathroom, but what they lack in stalls they make up with sanitary items, mint strips, and cleanliness.
the atmosphere is great, my aunts fries were cold so we told the waitress. Instead of just serving her a new batch of fries she took the plate sandwich fires and all and threw it in a microwave. The pickles on the plate were hot lol
Our favorite hometown restaurant stop when we've been traveling to visit friends and family. There's plenty of parking, and lively bar, outdoor seating, and a restaurant that offers plenty of choices to satisfy your hunger. The food is good and everyone can find something to satisfy their individual preferences.
It's a great place for breakfast which is what we went there for the majority of the time. We did go one time for lunch and I must admit the turkey dinner, superb you could tell it was a fresh, probably farm raised turkey. Thick slices, tender and juicy, it was good. Mashed potatoes are great and the gravy tastes homemade and good enough that my southern grandma would approve. Hubby had the steak and eggs which he enjoyed.
Our server wasn't very attentive, only saw at the beginning and the end of the meal. Food took a while to come out. Decent portion food with good pricing however. Still left a decent tip but do not think I'll be back.
Typical diner breakfast fare. Not many (or any) healthy options. Pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausage, the usual available. Not a fruit, vegetable or even oatmeal on the menu. Service was very slow. Waited 20 minutes for even a cup of coffee. Atmosphere updated in the last 15 years.
This restaurant has a bar and a dinner. You can play pool and choose a song from the jukebox. As for dinning, service is fast. Food is ok. Took a fish sandwich and there was nothing in it except for a ranch sauce on the side. Their speciality is a shrimp basket, pretty tasty😋. Like the bear decoration gives a nice touch to the restaurant. Worth the stop.
Nice people. But badly understaffed on the Saturday we went for lunch. Sat ourselves. Then waited and waited. Got up, asked for menus finally. Needless to say not much went right. Felt bad for the lone waitress. Wrong beer, she replaced it, soup never came, charged for drinks never ordered, till we pointed it out. She tried her best..Food was ok. Ordered cold sandwiches; not wanting to be there all day waiting! But be forewarned is the best advice if you're going here.
Was very country diner-ish minus the good country hospitality. Not warm and inviting.Turkey was house made and was very good! Burger was pretty good.
The menu is not up to date so don’t expect to pay the price you calculated in your head. My previous total of 10.50 was 19.50 and 1.00 of that was a “to-go fee.” On the phone when ordering, we stated how we ordered two egg breakfast sandwiches and were only ordering a side of fries to meet the $10 minimum for the ability to use a card at checkout. The waitress on the phone did not correct us or say anything in response to this, knowing we were already over the $10 minimum. Upon arrival, they card trap you lol because there was then a 3.5% fee to pay with card. I only gave this review two stars because the egg sandwiches were actually very good, and so were the fries. The cheese was the perfect amount of melted and the best type of cheese for a good egg sandwich, along with the bagels being soft but still good and the bacon also good bacon. Edit: ordered again at 12:01 right after breakfast is no longer served which we didn’t know before calling. Lady was and always is super rude answering the phone and said lunch is no longer served, meaning breakfast but stated lunch twice. Then snappily replied “I just SAID lunch is no longer served”, then corrected “breakfast lunch whatever” they offer dinner options as well so no need to be rude about your mistake of wording
Basic diner food. If you’re hungry it will work. Stopped in on a Sunday morning. I wouldnt say it was packed but they had customers. We waited 45 minutes for our food, I almost left. They seemed very unorganized. I won’t be back. I’ll just continue driving to the next spot.
This place has staff that struggle with the basics when it comes to customer service. Things like smiling, bringing napkins, checking on their customers for more drinks etc. The food is what to expect, decent. If your desperately hungry, stop in, but if you can wait, keep driving.
Got seated 2 adults 3 small kids and no one brought menus for 10 mins. Ordered drinks and the wrong ones got brought and it took again 10 minutes for a bottle beer. Food arrived and was decent but very basic food for the price. 1 waitress just kept complaining about the other you could just sense the negativity. Have to go through a door into bar for bathroom.
Waitress was very friendly and answered any questions we had. Wish we had read the reviews 1st. BRING CASH. Had a cup of chili - bland. Burger meat was bland. My friend had a Reuben. She said it was good. The fries are awesome. Super townie dive if you're into that 🙃
The food we had was not really appetizing. Their pizza could taste better if they work on their marinara sauce which was as bland as it could be. Same goes with their mozzarella sticks which didn't taste good as well. Service is decent but I would not prefer going back again. The only thing slightly better according to one of the people I was with was the chicken fingers.
Pork chops were over cooked and no seasoning at all, Didn't think it was so easy to mess up a chop but I don't even think the coyotes would've eaten it
Place looked amazing, staff were friendly, prices seemed reasonable on the menu. The food was horrible sadly, NYStrip was so thin and jad a weird flavor, mashed potatoes were cold seemed old gravy tasted like plastic. Canned peas are just not for a side. Soda had odd flavor and was flat. Heard so many great things about the place so figured we would try it on our way home, but I guess 7:45pm on a Sunday night is not a good day to try.
The fries were good, the meatloaf was fine, the clam chowder was watery, and the awesome crusty looking roll was...microwaved. Which turned the awesome crusty looking roll into a chewy sponge.
This cozy little cafe is missing some essential service and the food was less than presentable. Our waitress came over after about 10 minutes of waiting for any kind of recognition. She then dropped off menus and left without a drink order. About 10 minutes later she cane back for our order (and we finally could ask for coffee). Then the home fries came back way overdone on the outside and just barely done in the middle. We ate about half our food and never received a refill on our coffee. Our waitress was less than attentive and slightly rude. I do not recommend this place.
Normally I love local places like this but as others have said, I think staffing is a problem here. Service was very slow and the place was not crowded at all. We stopped here for lunch on our long drive to Montreal. Even after we were seated and served anyone that came into the restaurant after us was told the place was closing soon. There was such a weird vibe - although we all enjoyed our food. We just didn't feel welcomed.
If I could give it no stars I would have. We went today service was terrible, waited for almost an hour for our food. The waitress dropped our food and check at the same time that meant she wasn't coming back. I ordered a western omelet it had remnants of burnt bacon that must have come from a dirty grill as my order had no bacon in it. Was inedible had 1 bite paid and left. Was a terrible experience in every way. Other people left because they were waiting g so long and the waitress was so rude and aggressive with them. I would never return.
Not very happy with my visit. Although the service was great and the staff was very friendly. The interior was very dirty. There were flies that lingered around, and the food seemed microwaved and thrown together. My son order the steak and cheese grinder, and the meat was Luke warm and didn't seem cooked all the way through. My girls' onion rings were burnt. I ordered the fish sandwich, and the fish was cold in some parts on the inside. The fries were really good. I believe the staff issue played a big part.
We arrived to find the restaurant fairly busy but there were empty seats at the breakfast bar and a few empty tables. Our party of 2 sat at the bar and waited for about 10 minutes. No water, no coffee, no acknowledgement. Finally we were told by the (courteous) server working the area that it would probably be at least a 30 minute wait. We appreciated her honesty as she tried to cover at least half (all?) of the restaurant by herself. Like many businesses staffing seems to be an issue, so check when you walk through the door. The food may have been worth the wait....
Staff was very rude when we walked in and stated it would be a bit which was not a problem for us as we knew we had a big party for lunch. The staff acted like it was an inconvenience for us to be here. Not sure why they offer appetizers when you can't order them as an appetizer and have them before your meal. The food was not the greatest as one person ordered a hamburger and it tasted nasty. How do you mess up a burger? Never even offered refills on drinks. Not a very kid friendly restaurant. If I could give a 0 I would.
Terrible service. Waitress complained the entire time how busy she was yet only had three tables to take care of. Daughters pizza was burned black, son’s burger was blood red not medium. And wife’s chicken sandwich was not cooked. When we asked the waitress about the chicken her response was “ well it comes precooked so I don’t know what to tell you “ no mention of what they could do to make it right. Never again will we go there. Place is dirty and service sucked Feel like I need a tetanus shot after leaving.
Unfortunately, this was a very disappointing experience. The food was completely tasteless—bland, overcooked, and lacking any seasoning or flavor. We genuinely tried to give it a chance, but nothing stood out, and the entire meal felt like a waste. What made things worse was the behavior of the staff. Instead of taking our feedback with professionalism, they went around telling other guests that our party didn’t like the food. That’s incredibly unprofessional and immature. If anything, it made an already bad experience uncomfortable and embarrassing. We came in with high hopes as it’s been a family favorite for 5 generations, but between the poor food and the gossiping staff, this is not a place we’ll be returning to—or recommending to others.
The food was good, but the service was terrible. Orders were confused, our appetizer came out with our entrees, and one item never arrived—yet we were still charged for it. When I brought it up, the waitress gave excuse after excuse, including claiming she was the only one working (which wasn’t true). She took no accountability, and I finally had enough. When I went to pay, she called me “ridiculous” more than once—in front of other customers—because I put zero on the card tip (even though I was about to leave cash). She was acting completely unprofessional. Tips are earned, and with service like that, she didn’t deserve one. We won’t be back because of this wait staff.
Yikes...not good. The restaurant was old, dank, entirely outdated and in desperate need of an upgrade. Family members who went to bathroom literally got soaked from the toilet bowl when they flushed it. Food left a whole lot to be desired.
Service was good but the food is nasty. Asked for a well done burger and it was still pink and the tater tots tasted like it Sat in years old grease. Disgusting food. Definitely will avoid this place in the future.
The restaurant is very cute and quaint. I love the decor. The food was bearable but not amazing. I was served a breakfast menu at noon with no offer of lunch. The waitress was very short and rude with us. And when she brought out our food, she mixed them up and then threw a plate in front of me to rush away and said who cares. I was so disappointed. She didn’t care to offer any refills or if we needed anything. She also brought the check 5 mins after we had just gotten our food thrown at us. It felt like I was being forced to leave. Very unwelcoming staff.
Ordered food that wait staff failed to deliver! Forgot my main course and finally delivered it cold then charged me for a side dish that she never delivered! Asked for water that I never got! Asked for hot tea and got only half a cup and no refill! Totally disgusted with service and food! Side note there was a party of 3 that left due to poor service! Restaurant itself looks nice, cozy but I cannot recommend at this time due to issues! I would choose a different restaurant!
0 star food. We ordered a mama burger, a buffalo chicken sandwich, and Mac and cheese bites. The mama burger. I ordered it medium, and it came out bleeding and dripping grease all over. I took about 4 bites and couldn’t finish the rest. The buffalo chicken sandwich was a piece of processed chicken, a Kraft single slice, and hot sauce smothered on top. I would never even think about going back, even if it was the only place in 100 miles. I will leave it to the flies that were circling and falling on my burger. However, 4 stars for service. She was very nice, and our food came quickly.
This experience had me upset we waited about 25 too 30 minutes for our food then when we actually got the food my quesadilla was actually dripping with oil and grease and was almost inedible we also got wings that were completely fat. Also the man across from us had no shoes. Then I tried to ask for a to-go box and the waiter completely ignored me and I asked 2 more times still no to go box while she was just standing there on her phone, so we paid and left extremely disappointed.
We got there with a table of 10 which can be a lot to handle but not too bad. We all had to be separated into different booths. Waited for almost 10 minutes until we got our menus and another 5 until she took some of our orders. she didn’t take one of our tables orders and left. She constantly rolled her eyes and gave attitude. We left before we got our food and before some of us even ordered. She said that one of the chefs didn’t show up that day but overall do not recommend
If I could give 0 stars, I would. First, my party of three waited 20 minutes before anyone came to take our drink order. For our food, I ordered a medium well burger, and my sister ordered a well done one. Both were absolutely rare. If it wasn't a health risk, we would have just ate our food. Instead of an apology, the rude waitress said in a snappy tone, "You should have said something sooner!" She even argued with my sister about her rare burger. We didn't get a chance to tell the waitress before, because she didn't come and ask how our food was. I had to flag her down to even tell her. I've never had such rude service anywhere like this. Definitely NOT worth the 54 dollars we paid for our meals.
