The brunch was exceptional and the best so far. It was so much food from short ribs, roasted chicken, fish and lots of side dishes, salad, pastas, as well as breakfast items and so many delicious desserts. The sparkling wine was great too. Beautiful view of the Hudson River with indoor and outdoor seating.
My family and I were there for Thanksgiving 🦃 2025, the food was excellent 👍 and the waiter very professional and attentive and gave us extra gravy 🥰 Guest 4 check out time 5:39pm 4936 team 23
Holy cow I had the watermelon, orzo, shrimp salad, and I would just about give anything for this recipe. What a yummy surprise. Mr. wonderful had the Bolognese and it was deep and rich. The sommelier helped with a gorgeous wine. But wait, there’s more. The view is breathtaking. Be sure you eat outside.
The prime rib was decadent... I only wish I could order a bigger size than 14oz... The interior is beautiful, the people are warm and friendly. This place is a whole vibe.
I celebrated my step mothers birthday at Shadows on the Hudson, and I'm pretty sure she's now convinced she's too cool for me. The views of the Hudson River were stunning, but let's be real, the real view was the lobster dinner - it was so good! The service was top-notch, with our server being attentive, knowledgeable, and friendly. I'm pretty sure they even threw in a few extra candles on the cake just to make her feel like the queen. We paired our meal with a bottle of Moet that I NEVER had to pour from by the way. I swear every time my glass hit a certain amount, someone was on their way over to re fill my glass. Made me feel like the king I AM. All in all, our experience at Shadows on the Hudson was nothing short of exceptional. If you're looking for a place to celebrate a special occasion (or just want to treat yourself to a fancy dinner), look no further. Five stars isn't enough - I'd give it ten stars, a standing ovation, and a few extra candles on the cake if I could! 10 out if 10. Would definitely recommend. Jiggysayso Approved!
My daughters and I have been going out to dinner since they were little all over the tri-state area and a lot in NYC and very rare Do I give an overall 9 1/2 might as well be 10 cause I don’t know what they could’ve done differently but truly first rate in every category. Amazing ! We’ll be absolutely going back there many more times! Cheers Alex Wollman
I recently revisited Shadows on the Hudson for dinner for 2 after about a 10 years away. Spectacular views overlooking the Mid Hudson Bridge and Hudson River always make a visit here seem like a celebration. Shadows outdoor bar was a regular after work happy hour spot when I worked in the area and I was curious to see how it has evolved over the past decade. The reception area was very friendly they seated us inside, as requested. Our waitress, Rachel was professional, attentive and experienced. We received excellent service all around. We ordered the garlic shrimp for an appetizer 👍 👍 My girlfriend ordered the halibut special and really enjoyed it. I ordered the 12 Oz. NY Strip medium rare and thought it was cooked perfect. Warm, tender and red on the inside with a savory onion glaze. Yum! After dinner we sat at the outdoor bar and had a few drinks watching the boats go by. It was a lovely dinner and experience. Dinner for 2 ran about 160 before tip. We were in agreement that Shadows pulled off authentic "fine dining" in Poughkeepsie, NY. It definitely has more of a fine dining (and less of a night club) feel then I remember from 10 years ago 👏 My gf said the bathrooms were "amazing." We are looking forward to coming back for drinks and appetizers later in the summer. Check them out.
Mitch our waiter and Enrique the sommelier were amazing. Both were incredibly helpful and friendly. Food was what you would expect and the atmosphere was great. However the service from both was truly spectacular.
Stopped here for cocktails on way to CIA. This spot is not only beautiful, staff friendly, gorgeous view of Hudson River; the ambiance is spectacular. The bar area is quiet although large, the views are spectacular. Can’t wait to eat here! There were two wedding going o , on a Friday eve! Parking was a bit tricky but valet parking is included!
It was a lovely experience. The service was great and so was the food. The dessert was a creation from the bakery chef. A wonderful anniversary lunch. Filet mignon and the scallops were delicious.
I and my wife think this place is nothing but amazing. After four separate visits to this restaurant, we got married here. Every visit impressed, didn't matter what day of the week or time. They provide an extremely high level of food and service consistently. They have an outdoor bar as well as seating, for when the weather is agreeable. The 2 sets of glass walls will not interfere with the incredible view of the Hudson River and surrounding area. They have multiple private event options from smaller rooms holding up to 30ish people (i think) and larger room up to 100 guest. Anything more than that you might have to use the hall next door. We had just about 60 people at our wedding. We used the Sunset Room for the ceremony and True River for reception. It was a wonderful time that we will never forget. As mentioned before, the food and service was excellent for what i feel is quite a reasonable price. If you are searching for an event location, it will be hard pressed to find a better value for a stellar venue.
After living in the area for 10 years and frequenting many places, Shadows is hands-down one of the nicest and best places in the Mid-Hudson Valley. While you don't have to dress up when you go, it's one of those places where I would recommend doing so to better fit the atmosphere. Food is exceptional and the view over the Hudson is amazing. Would absolutely recommend for a date night or event
We enjoyed a delicious dinner on the balcony of Shadows overlooking the beautiful Hudson River. Our waiter Andrew was fantastic and very attentive. Food was excellent and the atmosphere was perfect. Had a little mix up with one of our meals, but one of the managers was super accommodating and very polite, they got it worked out right away. One of our favorite places to dine.
I’ve only been here 3x but all of my experiences dining here are the same. Our last visit in September 2021 was phenomenal! They have one of the best coffee in the USA. Their Fra Diavlo, calamari and steak are all really good with nice size portions. Polite and attentive servers. The ambience and view were amazing!
We had a wonderful experience at Shadows on the Hudson as Janey and Sal's celebrated their intimate wedding reception! The staff went above and beyond to ensure everything was perfect for the happy couple and their guests. The stunning view at Shadows on the Hudson makes for a breathtaking photo backdrop.
Everytime I visit my mother who lives at Waterclub across from Shadows, we make a point to go to Happy Hour at Shadows. Scott is amazing... he makes my 92 year old mother feel so welcome and he is an awesome bartender. Also appreciate Emmanuel, who always comes over to say hello. With such a friendly staff and excellent food, we will come back time and time again.
One of the most pleasant dining experiences of my life. Our table split the charcuterie and the cheese board, both of which were phenomenal. We were all completely satisfied with our meals as well. I had the seared duck, which was crispy and delicious, and I highly recommend it. Gorgeous views as well. Would love to return in warmer weather and sit outside on the stunning deck.
On our way from Connecticut to Lake George, with a few scenic detours including coffee at Half Moon in Kingston and a stop at Brooklyn Cider… I suddenly had a craving for oysters. My husband found Shadow House, and despite being dressed casually in sweatsuits, we were welcomed in. We arrived for happy hour at the bar/lounge, and it did not disappoint. I had 24 Blue Point oysters absolutely delicious. The happy hour selection was solid, and our waitress, Seth, was incredibly attentive and kind, adding to the great experience. The only thing I wish they had was room-temperature still water ( I dont drink chilled water), but that’s a small detail. Overall, the experience was exceptional. If you’re looking for quality oysters in a welcoming yet stylish setting, Shadow House is definitely worth a visit. Would love to return!
I held my Daughters sweet sixteen dinner here .I booked the private room and picked a package that was affordable yet so delicious !!!!!the atmosphere was so laid back so chill yet you felt a little bad and bougie at the same time (lol) .the serviceeeee???wow!!!!! The team was amazing and was ready on point kind friendly and just on it every moment of the close to 3 hours …..no one booked the room so we actually hung out a little bit longer which was pretty nice too !!! I was able to host without feeling like I was working at my own daughters party …all I had to do was show up and mingle ……I brought my little decor and as soon as I walked in they grabbed it and just made me feel at ease or as of I was setting up with a family member or bestie !!!! Shout out to the catering Director Dominique and her team !!!!!
Some of the most amazing food, a bit pricey, but very well prepared selection. The chef is amazing. We were a party of 20 people but even with that the attention to each was amazing. Had some of the best Truffle Cavatelli (v) and amazing set of appetizers. The steak was awesome as well. Their dessert menu, amazing mousse! Highly recommend!
Fine dining on the Hudson watching the sunset. Delicious food, optimal location, great indoor and outdoor ambiance, great music, great service, awesome and accommodating staff that goes above and beyond to ensure their guests are satisfied. What more can you ask for? The management team goes out of their way to say hello to you and checks in to ensure that you're 10/10 satisfied. Definitely one of my favorite local restaurants and good to take visiting family and friends.
Me and my partner celebrated our anniversary here and it was absolutely amazing. The staff is super friendly and go above and beyond to make sure you get what you need. The food is outstanding, we each had the filet mignon and it was simply delicious . I have a gluten allergy and they were super understanding and careful with my meal. The view is also an added bonus!
Shadows on the Hudson has a spectacular setting along the river. Large windows and french doors open out to viewing decks overlooking the river, the forest on the opposite bank and the north bound trains. They offer a tantalizing menu with some thing for every taste. I thoroughly enjoyed the prawn starter on garlic bread, delicious! The restaurant is quite large with a fireplace in the centre, creating a cozy vibe. The service was efficient and friendly. A family friendly restaurant. It was delightful to see the lovely rainbow on our way out. Enjoyed lunch for 9 people on 9 April 2022.
Went to Shadows for the New Years Eve dinner and it was very good. The place looked great with all the holiday decorations. The food was also very good. We had crab cakes and polenta frites for appetizer. Shrimp fra diavolo and filet mignon for entree. Tiramisu and cheesecake for dessert. The service was very attentive and it was a wonderful experience all around. We also got a champagne toast after dinner at the bar. Wonderful way to end the year.
Our servers nick and Marc were right on Great service, food was awesome, expensive but awesome. Only downside was if you have a large party and kids, be prepared to pay $67 for your child to eat French fries and chicken nuggets. The contract had me go in with a somewhat negative attitude. No speeches, and if you stay over the 2 1/2 hours it says $10 per person every half hour extra. I got a little nervous when we didn't get deserts for almost 2 hours after we got there but it all worked out and really good and still thinking about how good the food and desserts were.
Excellent service. Beautiful views of the Hudson from the patio. Great food. Some highlights: the calamari was amazing. Perfectly made. The burger I had was medium rare just as I had ordered. The provolone, melted just right, and the peppers with their slight kick blended well with the yolk from a perfectly made fried egg that sat on top of it. One of the best burgers that I've had.The sweet potato fries and the regular fries were superb. Crispy on the outside and just right on the inside. Will definitely be back. Highly recommend it. Kudos to Chef Padilla and the team.
Food and drinks and views oh my! All top flight. Looking at the autumn foliage along the Hudson in a charming fairly large Sunday Brunch palace was uplifting. Enormous food choices..some favorites: Italian sausage and peppers in a Romano sauce -- chicken in wild mushroom yummmmmmy sauce -- cinnamon filled puff pastry -- carvery meats -- plump tasty shrimp with zesty sortof ketchup -- zaladz galore. BIG APPLAUSE >>> GO
What an amazing brunch! It was a buffet but make no mistake… this ain’t no Golden Corral! This is an elegant, yet chill venue. Some were dressed in their Sundays best and others in jeans and sneakers. Totally up to you what you want to wear. This place is gorgeous! The views of the Hudson and the mountains were breathtaking. The Poughkeepsie train station is down the street so you see the trains as they are pulling in, which was so neat to see. It was like something out of a movie. The food was top tier! Shrimp cocktail with huge shrimp, salads, butternut squash soup, chicken and waffles, omelettes cooked to order, eggs, bacon, sausage, a full bar and let’s not forget the desserts! Pastries, cookies, cakes, the list goes on! We couldn’t believe the check was so low for all we were able to enjoy! The staff was friendly and helpful and the bathrooms were spotless. Whenever we are back upstate we will be sure to visit Shadows for Sunday brunch!
Went to shadows on the Hudson for my friend’s birthday, we got some drinks which were excellent very tasty with a solid kick to it. The filet was brought out perfectly, great food placement and exceptional aroma of flavors. Very much enjoyed ourselves on the patio overlooking the water . Made my friends birthday extra special !!
My absolute favorite restaurant in the area! We celebrated a very special dinner here and truly could not have asked for a better experience. From start to finish, everything was exceptional. The staff was incredibly accommodating, friendly, and welcoming, and the service was attentive without ever feeling rushed. The atmosphere is beautiful and elegant as always. The food was excellent, every dish was beautifully presented and thoughtfully prepared. This was the perfect place for our celebration dinner and a night we’ll always remember. Thank you for making it so memorable.
Gorgeous restaurant with great food! It's the perfect location during afternoon golden hour and sunset because the sun shines right into the restaurant. Perfect location to run outside quickly and get some photos on the Hudson River. Special place to bring an intimate group for a celebration, like on your wedding day!
Went here for a quiet friday night dinner with my girlfriend. The food was delicious, they had dim lighting so it wasn't to overpowering while we were eating, the portions were appropriate (not skimpy but not enough for leftovers). The staff was pleasant to deal with, very courteous, and didn't hover to much around the table.
This is a fantastic resource and destination for a top shelf experience. The price asked is high, but the product delivered far surpassed the request! A great setting for a quiet meal for two,or a robust experience for a group. Everything was scrumptious! Apps, drinks, mains, and desert .... very well worth it!
OMG! What an amazing restaurant. The staff were attentive and sooo nice. And the food was even better. We went for a surprise birthday lunch and traveled an hour and 20 minutes, but it was well worth it. We definitely plan to go back. The view of The Hudson was absolutely gorgeous. Check this place out, you won't be disappointed!!!
Absolutely amazing food, garlic shrimp, oysters, ribeye… Everything was on point. We were in a rush for our next Valentines activity and every single staff member was attentive and helpful. We had a beautiful meal and was able to finish our meal in 45 minutes. Food, service, and atmosphere are all 10/10! Would come back!
The service was phenomenal. Tom our waiter was "on point". Enrique, the sommelier was warm and helpful. The servers paid attention to detail. The maître d' was warm and welcoming. And the drinks were tasty. Oysters were wonderful. Prices were appropriate.
We loved this place! Came here for a late lunch and really enjoyed the experience. Our waitress Nicole was fabulous...couldn't ask for anything more than she provided. Very well informed, very attentive, extremely pleasant. The view was beautiful. We look forward to returning!
Shadows on the Hudson is nothing short of extraordinary—truly the crown jewel of Poughkeepsie dining. From the moment you arrive, you’re greeted with sweeping, unforgettable views and an atmosphere that feels both sophisticated and warm. The décor is stunning, the service is consistently exceptional, and the entire experience feels elevated in a way few places can match. While the food can occasionally vary, the overall quality, presentation, and ambiance make every visit memorable. What truly sets Shadows apart is how perfect it is for special occasions. Each corner of the space feels thoughtfully designed, making it an ideal backdrop for celebrations of any kind. I’m incredibly hopeful and excited to host my wedding welcome party in their outdoor event space this summer—it’s the kind of venue that instantly transforms an event into something magical. Overall, Shadows on the Hudson continues to be one of my all-time favorite places. It delivers breathtaking moments, exceptional service, and a level of hospitality that makes every visit feel special. Absolutely spectacular.
The drive up there from Hamtptons area Long Island was BEAUTIFUL for the fall foliage. We drove almost 3 hours to get here and the food, the views, the service and welcoming feeling easily makes it worth returning time and time again. Just plain beautiful. We had reservations but around 2pm it was busy but not crowded. We sat outside and the views were spectacular.
I celebrated my anniversary this past Saturday. I had a wonderful experience. The customer service was probably the best I had so far in orange county. The servers, the manager , the cook everyone was very professional and amicable. My wife was very happy and pleased. Thanks for the wonderful experience. We would definitely comeback pretty soon.
My Husband and I came for a wedding and the “rehearsal dinner” was here. The atmosphere along with the view, vibes, food and staff made for an experience I’ll always remember. I had caviar for the first time and loved it, I always wondered why it was so expensive…I now know and have been chasing that flavor ever since.
This is our fourth visit to Shadows since 2019. We always enjoy our meals in the restaurant and our stay at the marina. The staff is friendly, and a member of management has greeted us on each visit, ensuring that our meal and experience were exceptional. Thanks to Joe for stopping by and chatting with us on this visit. We would also like to recognize Captain Keith, the marina manager. He is always accommodating, makes sure that we are safely tied up, and works hard to make our stay comfortable. This is also our fourth multi-day stay at Shadows Marina, and it is our preferred stop on the Hudson River.
The place is beautiful right by the Hudson River. The food and service were good. The one thing that stood out was a young server by the name of Devon. He had a very difficult customer who complained about everything. Devon was exceptional in diffusing the situation. By the time he finish speaking with her, her attitude was gone, and she was smiling. I sat at the table near them and admired the customer service and professionalism that Devon displayed. Kudos to you.
Absolutely stunning location and amazing food! Shadows on the Hudson is one of those rare gems that offers it all, incredible views, delicious food, and top-tier service. Located right on the Hudson River, the atmosphere is simply breathtaking, especially around sunset. Highly recommend it if you’re in the area or even if you’re not. It’s worth the drive, believe me! Ask for Emmanuel, the manager. The greatest host on earth.
I took my fiancé to Shadows on July 5th of 2025. We’ve been there before, and always found the food and service particularly very good. But last nice was FANTASTIC! Between the ambience, the food, and the above-and-beyond service we received, we were very impressed. They even helped move us to the side tables after we requested it to get a better view of the Hudson (which was very beautiful). I want to give a special shout-out to Emanuel, Tom, and Divine. All three of these gentlemen helped make us feel very comfortable. They let us stay and enjoy our time without making us feel rushed in anyway. I highly recommend Shadows on Hudson!
We went for our Anniversary and were thrilled at the ambiance, service and of course the food. Great views of the river from an elevated view. All of the staff were very attentive and were asked multiple times how everything was by the staff. We had the focaccia bread appetizer and was amazing with the honey butter. Look at the size of those shrimp! We will be back.

You go for the views. You'll eat better in other places.... But it's not bad. If you're on your way to another location this is a great spot to stop and get a seat outside for lunch and enjoy the views. It's an event space and that's pretty clear. But for lunch it's a quiet spot to overlook the river and the bridge. The staff was very nice.
Great atmosphere and service! Great views of the Hudson River outdoors. A little too chilly inside for me. Beautiful dining rooms and set up inside. Fried calamari appetizer was good. Nice indoor bar! The house-infused Pineapple Cosmo was very tasty, although I didn’t feel the alcohol until the second drink. Hubby‘s rack of lamb was excellent. Cooked medium. My prime rib left a little to be desired. Ordered it medium well. It came out as ordered, but was a little dry. Had to ask for au jus on the side as it came with horseradish sauce and I don’t eat that. The rosemary popover accompaniment was burnt so couldn’t eat it. Manager was very nice and accommodating. The crème brûlée dessert was good, but average. Overall great experience!! Would definitely return and recommend to others. Prices were average which is great considering the location. 4.5 indeed!!
We celebrated my Mom's 75th birthday at Shadows and had a great experience! Everyone enjoyed their meal, whether it was steak, salmon, or chicken. The birthday cake (strawberry shortcake) and hazelnut chocolate mousse dessert option were both delicious. Dominique, the Catering and Sales Manager, was a pleasure to work with. Devin, our waiter was excellent - super attentive, very friendly, and provided great customer service. It was a breath of fresh air to receive that level of service, since most places I go to have had a significant drop in their customer service. Being in the events industry, I can appreciate when the service team adds to the quality of the event.
We had a nice dinner here, with a beautiful view. Service was good, food was ok, the best part being the location. The Caesar was sloppy and not very flavorful. The best thing we had was the peach crostini (so good!!!). The walkway along the river shore below is a nice way to end the evening.
Since my last visit here the food has remained incredibly delicious! From the raw bar to the seared scallops, the full lobster and dessert my wife and I enjoyed every bite! This visit however the service was extremely slow! From being seated, with a reservation, to paying the check we were there for over 2hours! Glasses were slow to be refilled, food was slow to come out, and it took forever to get our bill and then wait for someone to take it. If the food wasn't so good it'd definitely be a harsher review, but we had a good time so please do better next time!!
Beautiful view of the Hudson River, we were able to sit outside, the service was good I can tell that our waitress was new, she was learning, and was trying her best to attend us, the food was delicious, the manager came to our table to asked us if everything was ok? Off course everything was Great!!
First time dining here for me. The location and view are truly amazing. One dollar happy hour oysters were my favorite as well as the varied selection at the bar before we had dinner. Scallops were disappointing sadly as they were overcooked and a bit chewy but tasted good. The French rosé wine was also a highlight for me.
The most beautiful view in town hands down. Service was excellent and Devon was exceptional. We started off with the crispy calamari and they did not disappoint. For our mains, we got the ribeye steak which was good meat and cooked medium as requested but was the top was too over-charred. The burger and fries were delicious! Overall a great spot to eat!
Awesome happy hour. Oysters on the half shell were delicious. Spectacular views. Sat at the bar and the service was great. Will definitely return.

Our go to place for Sunday brunch buffet. \nMore expensive then any other ones in the area but more then worth the money in our opinion!!!!!!
Love location and views are amazing. Food is good pricey I guess you are paying for location

First time at the restaurant, it was reserved for a special occasion. It did not have the usual feel that you expect for a restaurant that you told in advance that your coming for a special occasion. However, its a beautiful setting.. music selections were on point .. if your vegetarian its not the restaurant for you as there is nothing to really select from but the waiter did do his best in making some suggestions to the altering of a menu item that would then suit my dietary needs. The management also gave us a discount to compensate for anything that might be deem out of the ordinary. I would have given a 4 but we go to a restaurant to eat as such food is a strong factor. Nice place menu needs a little improvement then this spot would be a top notch place to dine!
An uneven experience. Spectacular location with easy parking. Great service, friendly and prompt. Unfortunately the food failed to impress. Crab cakes were presented well but were bland and heavily filled with bread. The raw platter had some of the best oysters I may have ever eaten along with excellent marinated muscles however the shrimp were heavily over cooked and tasted as though they had been frozen. Sorbet for dessert and layer cake were both inspiring. I suspect that some of the other dishes would have been better but our choices left a lot to be desired :-(
went here as part of a fundraiser with a high end sports car club and was not impressed. got charged 2 different prices for the same glass of of wine. food was ok to be nice but that was part of the fundraiser and maybe we did not get the best experience as to the food. the atmosphere was nice and inviting. I hope my experience with the food was just do to an off night and they do not rely on the location and atmosphere to bring in customers.
Had a fun time, but the food was lacking and over priced. Server didn't know answers to basic questions, forgot apps, and was generally inattentive (tbf he seemed really busy, but for the price I expected more). My glass of port was loaded with sediment, the pannacotta was rubbery, and the mac and cheese was a joke. Seared scallops were cooked perfectly, and the highlight of the meal for me was the caviar. Decor is not my style, a bit over the top, but I can see why people like it.
The location? Perfect. The staff? Very polite. But unfortunately, that’s about where it ends. While everyone was courteous, there were some basic oversights. The maître d’ showed us to our table and placed the menus down without any explanation. We almost missed the specials menu entirely—which, in hindsight, might have been a blessing, as that’s where we found the tuna tartare. Speaking of which, the tuna tartare was … okay. I’ve had better many times. The tuna, which should be the star of the dish, lacked flavor—possibly lower grade or previously frozen. It just didn’t deliver. The clam pot was another disappointment. It wasn’t really a “pot” at all—just clams in a deep dish. On the bottom was a layer of mashed potatoes with a flavorful sauce, which was actually quite good. But because it was so hot, it continued to cook the clams, overcooking them and making them unpleasantly chewy. Something every chef, I assume, should know. Overall, definitely edible but far from a “fine dining” experience that they claim to offer. And just when I thought the experience had bottomed out, I visited the restroom. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen facilities in such poor condition. One toilet was clogged, and the other… well, I’ll spare the details, but it was genuinely disturbing. Especially at a restaurant. I’d rate it a 2 because of the expectations I had but realistically, a 3.
After many years of hearing about the prestigious Shadows on the Hudson, that’s exactly what it is. Big, fancy, definitely geared toward big parties and events. It’s gorgeous on the inside, and located along the Hudson. Truly breathtaking. My party of 5 all had different meals, all in which were good, except for one. Tonight I had the Lobster Mac N Cheese, I just honestly want to say. What was that? A mound of noodles with a mound of burnt cheese baked into what I can only describe as a “patty”. Only to lift up the patty of pasta and cheese and be met with a completely watery yellow liquid. Huge pieces of lobster, which anyone would be excited for, except the entire dish smelled and tasted like bad lobster. When it hit the table, I was ASTONISHED that this dish could have possibly made it past the expo window. There is just no way that this could possibly be what they intend you to pay $46 dollars for. No problem, we will replace it. And on the fly, because this is a restaurant that is high quality and fancy and you are important as the guest. NOPE! My entire table ate their meals while my Medium burger was finished 25 minutes after the initial meals were set and the check was on the way. Server was excellent, timely and understanding. Overall, I must say this is a huge disappointment for a place that is held in such high regard. The people I dined with are restaurant owners and have dined here over the years and even they said that this time around didn’t hold up to their past visits regarding taste and quality.
The views and atmosphere are terrific! But the food is very average. There’s a lot of seafood in the pasta so that was nice but the noodles just fell apart under our forks. The sauce was also not that great for both dishes. A good move would be to come here for the views and grab a light dinner, so you can eat elsewhere too. We still had a good time and would recommend for the vibes.

Being a Poughkeepsie native I have eaten at Shadows on numerous occasions since day one and have seen the quality and portion sizes consistently go down as the prices have become very questionable.…
Below ordinary at extraordinary prices. Food was just okay and not very flavorful. My friend didn't like anything. I was here in 2015 and it was amazing....what happened?
drinks were ok. Views were good. Staff try. Views are good. Lots of car parking. Views across the river are nice. Has potential.

Yes...the view on the river is stunning. The service is also excellent- which is rare these days. The food however..not so much. We ordered the most expensive app on the menu ($25) a beef kabob..because it sounded good. It came as a completely burnt darkened mess and didnt taste very good. My first thought was literally 'OMG..a benihana tv dinner was left in the mic too long'. My steak sandwich would at least be a quality slab of steak..but no. It was clearly 'Steak-umm' out of the grocery store. This is well below the standards of much more affordable spots- so Shadows is absolutely not worth the money. Come for a drink and the view unless work is paying.
Sigh. Frustratingly disappointing restaurant, where it ultimately feels like you’re just paying for the view. Service is okay, food is truly not enjoyable, establishment feels like a veneer of fine dining, and the price is $$$. My husband and I received a generous gift card to Shadows and went for a date night last week. It was practically empty (with no guests waiting) and we had a reservation, yet it took almost 5 minutes to seat us. Regarding atmosphere, Shadows is huge and flashy in a gargantuan casino-style way. Cool color schemes, modern styling, curtains to the ceiling etc, giant wine menu, impressive not intimate. Some really dig this, but it felt cold. My review is heavily weighted on food. The menu looks like standard upscale casual ultrafusion steakhouse fare. $16 Caesar salad, $38 seafood house made pasta, $63 surf and turf, $175 Russia caviar, they have it all and it’s expensive. We started with warm rolls and two butters: a salted butter and a flavored-yet-flavorless chili butter, these were fine. Appetizer choice was calamari. It was tough, not fresh tasting, and in spite of being very pale it had a distinctive char flavor, old frying oil I suspected. We couldn’t finish it because we were grossed out (and believe me we are clean-plate club members all the time so this was hard to do). Drinks: beer (fine) and a dirty gin martini. The server didn’t know what Nolet’s gin was (which I picked from their menu) so that delayed my martini a good 10 minutes. When it came out it was served in a small martini glass, with a layer of ice shards on top. It tasted watery the moment those shards melted. Entrees were brought out by the manager (I think), which was the only moment it felt like fine dining. The choices: truffle mushroom fettuccine and basil & spinach pappardelle. The truffle mushroom fettuccine was a good sized portion and the pasta had a decently silky texture, however it lacked any trace of truffle, and generally fell flat with the flavor profile. Sauce was so light on mushroom and overwhelmingly rich from butter and cream that if there were other flavors, they were masked. Overall, it was bland and heeeavy. If you’re lactose-intolerant, don’t even consider. While my pasta was aggressively mediocre, my husband’s papardelle on the other hand was laughably gross. The pasta was so thick and chewy that it practically bounced off of his fork. After about 10 bites he said “I think rubber bands may be more supple than this pasta.” The sausage was tough, the raw cherry tomatoes were confusing and out of place, and the little bit of sauce pooled at bottom would not stick to the poor rubbery papardelle. If we hadn’t had a gift card for our $26 and $28 pastas I’d have been upset. After my bowl of butter and cream I thought an espresso martini may be the perfect dessert as a digestive. Conveniently they can make it decaf and I appreciated that, but the drink itself tasted like a watery cold brew! Most definitely the worst espresso martini of my life, and just as expensive as ones I’ve had in NYC, and other places where you expect high prices. 2 for 2 with the watery drinks. Throughout the dining experience we waited a lot, even though the place was nearly empty. It felt sad, and eventually irritating. Because it’s so big the servers are probably walking a quarter mile just go to a table and tend to their needs. This seems to result in veeeery slow bussing, infrequent checks on dinner progress, etc. Overall our meal was about $150. We didn’t spend all of our gift card because server didn’t know how to put gratuity on the card. So we’ll have to go back to use it up. Whenever that happens I think we’ll stick to beers… A final note: this place could be so much better if it felt like there was any love in it and that it wasn’t just following the ‘generic upscale American steakhouse’ formula. Servers look exasperated, the menu lacks soul, and for the quality of food and drink the prices are outrageous. Want to say I hope this is a one time flub for Shadows, but I strongly suspect it’s the norm.
My family and I went to this beautiful restaurant on the water for a late dinner. It was 7 of us and a 8 month old baby My family are big supporters of this restaurant! We wanted to sit outside by the water but the waiter said we can’t bc he did not have a table to accommodate us. And they could not put tables together. I was like wow ok. My expectations for this place was high now it’s dwindling! My mom order a shot or remy martin , the waiter was like it’s coming, he brought out everyone else drinks but not my moms. Then he came back like we just have to open a new bottle. Finally, like 15 mint later ,he came back and said we don’t have it ! I’m like what the world u just said they was opening up a new bottle! We ordered appetizers and they were not good at all. A few of us ordered grill shrimp , my sister sent hers back. It was missing sauce, and it was bland. It was like the food was thrown on the plate. they have all been there b4 so we know how the dishes look & taste. Unfortunately my niece n my mom taste my grill shrimp so I couldn’t sent it back! We ordered the garlic bread tower . we got a few pieces . Normally it’s in a shape of a tower. Then we ask for bread like 3 times . The waiter comes back and say it was no more. He gave us some free garlic bread, however it came when the dinner was almost over. I ordered the shrimp bucatini, it was so dry, noodles was hard and real spicy. I wanted to send it back for something else but everyone reminded me that kitchen was closed. My mom also ordered the Black Sea bass to go. he brought out a little piece of fish . That plate was for a kid. We sent that back. The guy waiter was not that helpful. I’m sorry my experience was not great . You know eating their cost a pretty penny! That food was not worth the money !!! i wanted dessert but i did not want to chance it. I will not be going back anytime soon . I guess to each it’s own!
My girlfriend and I dined at Shadows on the Hudson on Saturday 29 March to celebrate a long weekend away in CT and NY. We arrived a few minutes after our 7:30p reservation ad was told that a table would be clearing out for us shortly. We were the last couple to be seated, at around 8pm, while watching others walk in and be guided to their tables shortly after arriving. As we walked to our table, we noticed quite a few empty two-tops, which felt unusual for a Saturday evening. Our server, Jess, took our orders. We waited about twenty minutes for two cocktails and a very large batch of calamari. Both were excellent - drinks were perfectly balanced, and the calamari was quite crunchy with a rich marinara sauce. Our main problem came with our shareable, medium-rare porterhouse ($115). After placing our order at 8:10pm, we didn’t receive our steak until shortly after 9pm. The “medium-rare” steak, which was well seared from the outside, was visibly raw on the inside. At this point, I was fed up. I walked back to the front of the house to request that a manager visit our table. He was very amenable to the problems we faced throughout the evening, and apologized for the experience that we had. He brought the steak back to the kitchen, and placed it in boxes for us to go - at which point, we were no longer interested in staying at the restaurant. After telling him about our very delayed seating and very raw steak, he offered to remove our drinks from our total bill. I paid, but before my girlfriend and I left our table, he offered us two glasses of champagne, a very thoughtful gesture. He apologized for the service and our dining experience, and we shook hands. I would give the manager six stars, if I could.
So tonight, wife and I decided to have our annual Christmas eve dinner here.... Got here and was seated promptly but by a family of 8 with several unruly and uncontrollable children.... I should have asked for another table, but they were packed. Everything went OK until the appetizers came.. My wife ordered an apple walnut salad with Manchego cheese... the salad came drenched in vinaigrette with no cheese nor walnuts... my wife sent it back... it came back this time with no dressing, no cheese and no walnuts... server said the chef said cheese is not part of the salad, even though the menu says so... Thank God for the Sommelier Enrique, who took charge and offered my wife lobster bisque instead. Clearly the chef didn't know what was on the menu... Mind you, this whole time, the unruly kids are screaming, running around the tables, crawling underneath the tables, including ours, with the family doing little to nothing, all in full view of the staff. Main course came and it was delicious, but hard to enjoy with the constant screaming from the kids and running around. Final straw was when the kids started to pull on my wife's jacket as we tried to enjoy desert... I finally said something to the family, who looked at me like I had 3 heads... How dare I mention their children's behavior... I asked for the check and the waitress brought the general manager. My wife described her issues and then I explained mine with the unruly children and the poor ambiance. I informed him I'm a law enforcement officer who has to work tomorrow so this was our Christmas night. I also explained that management needs to have a policy that if family cannot control the children, then management needs to address it, not the nearby guests. He was asympathetic at best... He agreed that we should not have had these issues, but Merry Christmas and have a good night.... smdh.... what was once a long looked forward tradition has ended and we will not be going back...Diners beware...A once great place let 2 repeat customers down ... Shame on you
The Price of Breathtaking Views Shadows on the Hudson offers true destination dining, nestled at the end of a winding route that descends from Union Street Historic District down Poughkeepsie's riverbank bluff. The restaurant sits just 50 feet from the Hudson River's eastern shore, perched 40 feet above the water's edge. From this elevated vantage point, diners enjoy stunning panoramic views of the river and the iconic Mid-Hudson Bridge stretching across the water. The decor still pops, the views are still magnificent, and the table settings still suggest fine dining ahead. Stepping into Shadows on the Hudson at 176 Rinaldi Blvd in Poughkeepsie is more than just going out for a meal; it's an experience. From the moment you arrive, the floor-to-ceiling windows frame the magnificent setting. The ambiance inside is a perfect blend of sophisticated elegance and comfortable warmth. Tasteful decor creates a chic yet welcoming atmosphere. It's the kind of place that feels equally perfect for a romantic anniversary dinner or a celebratory gathering with friends and family. I can definitely see it as a special place with an upscale atmosphere for those Friday night drinks after a week of work. Like the ruby-throated hummingbird, we migrated from Florida north for summer to the beautiful area that we called home for most of our lives. To a special meeting of family at the Shadows. A once-a-year family tradition for years to enjoy the company of loved ones while either taking in the breathtaking golden hour moments when the setting sun sets the Hudson ablaze, turning every ripple into dancing light. Or at other times monitoring boaters below threading their way into those narrow slips at the adjacent Shadows Marina - oddly mesmerizing. For those arriving by boat, the restaurant offers dockside dining service, delivering their full menu directly to boat slips. Unfortunately, it's clear from our experience and other recent reviews that the food and service don't consistently live up to the spectacular setting. Chef John Malone, formerly of the majestic Mohonk Mountain House, has helmed the kitchen here since late 2023. By all accounts, he brings impressive experience to the table. Unfortunately, that expertise must have taken the night off. The tone was set by the bread basket: stale. Not in the charming 'rustic, crusty' sense - just straight-up neglected. When our server came by to apologize for the delay with our appetizers, we asked for a fresh basket. She forgot, so we had to remind her again when she delivered our appetizers. Fresh hot bread eventually appeared. When the food finally arrived, my wife ordered the Garlic Shrimp on Garlic Baguette appetizer with confit tomatoes, garlic, and lemon in white wine sauce for $24. She ate only the four shrimp, leaving the baguette untouched. Later she admitted it was 'because she needed something to do while the rest of us ate.' The baguette—normally known for its crispy exterior—had become a waterlogged 'bog-uette,' completely saturated with sauce. I played it safe with their Soup of the Day for $12 - what appeared to be a take on Portuguese Caldo Verde. While the flavor base was sound, the execution fell short. The soup lacked the silky, cohesive texture that defines a proper Caldo Verde, instead presenting as a somewhat disjointed collection of sausage chunks, carrots, and wilted greens in a thin broth. At nearly NYC pricing, I expected more finesse. This felt like an $8-10 soup at best. After the 35-minute wait for appetizers that failed to satisfy, much less impress, and glasses sitting empty after the initial pour, no one was inclined to order another course. We'd had enough and asked for the check. Though we did not stay, I still want to give you a sense of their pricing: pasta dishes range from $26 to $38, while 'Land' entrées run $32 to $58 per person (or $135 for a 40-ounce Tomahawk Ribeye for two). 'Sea' selections fall between $35 and $66.

We came here for an early Mother's Day dinner on Saturday and we will not be coming back. The food was okay, nothing spectacular. My dirty martini didn't have any olives in it. The shrimp cocktail and fried calamari were okay. The pork arepas we should have done without. I ordered the lobster and it was served with one claw. What kind of chef plated that and thought it was okay to serve? When I informed the server he came back out with a claw. Overall it was a bad experience and we will not be going back.
The chocolate mousse is not as described and they did not follow my note that I was gluten free. There was nothing in the description that mentioned gluten-containing ingredients, but I made a note, just in case. They still included cookie crumble, the hazelnut was replaced with walnut, and there were no raspberries. The mousse itself was denser than it should have been. I am not sure what you would accurately call it. I also ordered the french cut chicken breast. The breast itself was tasteless, but the sauce was good. There was 3/4 cup of vegetables including two brussels sprouts, a tiny potato and tiny cubed butternut squash. There was no cauliflower puree (perhaps it contained gluten?, but if so, they could have added a few more veggies). What made this a one star review was that when I called the restaurant to see if what appeared to be cookie crumbs was, in fact gluten-containing cookie crumbs, they confirmed it contained gluten and they saw my order specified "gluten free", but nothing was offered to correct the error. They could have refunded $6.50 (half of the cost) or offered to make me a new one, but all I received was an apology. I am glad I noticed the error and that I asked before becoming violently ill, but an apology is simply not acceptable from a "fine dining" establishment.
We drove an hour and a half to celebrate our anniversary here on 8/16/25 and were shocked by how poorly we were treated. From the moment we arrived, the hostess was rude, dismissive, and clearly uninterested in providing even basic hospitality. When it started pouring outside, we asked to be seated indoors. Despite multiple empty tables in the air-conditioned dining room, she rolled her eyes, and tried to sit us in a table in the hot, humid enclosed patio area by what appeared to be a storage area. After objecting, we were told it would be a long wait (our reservation was 6:00, it was now 6:02) but she was able to seat a family that had just walked in at one of the empty tables without issue. After pointing that out, within minutes we were seated at one of the “unavailable” empty tables, proving there was never an issue, just attitude. Our anniversary, which was noted in the reservation, was never acknowledged. We weren’t even told “have a nice evening” as we left. The hostess set a negative tone for the entire night and made us feel like an inconvenience. For a restaurant of this level, it was unacceptable. The only saving graces were our server and the staff member who finally seated us—both were professional, pleasant, and everything the hostess was not. The food was excellent, these three factors alone would have warranted a 5 star review, but service begins at the door, and the person greeting guests should not make them regret coming in.
Unfortunately had a jarring experience here on a lovely summer evening at the outdoor bar. A woman was sitting next to us at the bar, waiting for her friend to arrive. Three older adults seated near her started loudly stating that they wanted her seat for a newly arrived member of their group. (A male, 20s or 30s). She calmly explained that her friend was stuck in traffic but would be arriving shortly. The rude man took the seat. Her friend arrived 5 minutes later and had to stand. The woman tried to get the bar staff and wait staff to intervene as she was being verbally attacked by these rude people and no one helped her. It was very uncomfortable. My husband and I had just ordered our food and drinks or we would have left immediately. It was so tacky and classless. Truly not handled well at all by staff or management. We finished our meal and my husband gave his seat to her friend. We finished our drinks and left. Most likely won’t be returning. Not a pleasant atmosphere. Lowbrow clientele and uninterested staff are unappealing no matter how great an outdoor view may be.
We came here as a party of five on August 25th around 7:15pm to celebrate my significant other’s birthday, and unfortunately the experience was extremely disappointing. Service was very poor. We waited a long time just to get water and our food took forever to arrive. By the time we finished, everyone else had left and we were the only table remaining over two hours later. Before arriving I had called the restaurant to let them know we were celebrating a birthday and asked if we could bring our own dessert. I was told we could, but that they also had options available on their menu. At the end of the night, instead of being given a dessert menu, a tiramisu cake was simply brought to the table ,something my significant other does not even like. On his own birthday he didn’t even get the chance to choose his dessert. Felt sloppy and rushed. When I spoke to the manager about all of this, nothing was done to acknowledge the poor service or my concerns. We paid our bill and left, feeling extremely disappointed. This was supposed to be a special night, but it was handled so poorly that I would never recommend this restaurant to anyone.
Hostess doesn't have a clue how to treat clients, just tried to get a table outside by myself, place is maximum 25-30% full and she wants to sit me at the bar. Honey if I wanted to eat a 100$ meal at the BAR I wouldn't ask for a table on the terrace. Just wanted a meal with a view, breathing fresh air. Don't tell me that in about one hour that I would have been here place would get full.
