Opinions de Schilo's Delicatessen San Antonio
Strongly recommend the sausage and the root beer. The sausage is perfectly seasoned and tender, and paired with some sauerkraut it’s juicy and full of flavor. The root beer has a unique aroma, when you drink it, it really feels like having an actual beer. Joseph is also very warm and genuine, and the atmosphere is special and distinctive. I really loved this place. Highly recommended!
During my first visit to San Antonio with my wife and daughter, while attending an oncology conference, I had the pleasure of discovering this wonderfully authentic German diner. For much of the trip it was just my daughter and me, and this restaurant quickly became a place of comfort and consistency for us. From the very beginning, the service was truly impeccable. We were warmly greeted and seated right away by a friendly host, and our server, Clarissa, went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. She was attentive, thoughtful, and especially considerate in offering menu suggestions suitable for my 13-month-old daughter. My baby absolutely loved the cornbread and the split pea soup—both were clear favorites. We were so appreciative of the outstanding service and inviting atmosphere that we returned multiple times over the course of four to five days. This diner made our stay in San Antonio even more memorable, and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area.
Great Place for a hearty, or healthy, meal! Food fabulous. Root beer, and adult versions, really good. Anten our server was the best. Come back here every time I'm in San Antonio.
LOVED it!!!! Everything was fantastic! Our server was the BEST. We never had to ask for anything. Our food truly was amazing. Pretzel with beer butter. Pancakes, potato cakes, waffle, sausage, and chicken and biscuits. The gravy is perfect! You must try the root beer, served in a cold mug with the frost on top! So good! I want to go back ....now!
One of my absolute favorite restaurants. We eat here for breakfast and lunch whenever we visit San Antonio. House made root beer and traditional German cuisine is so tasty. Also. The German chocolate cake is amazing if you can get it before it's gone.
The atmosphere was perfect. The food was amazing, but JO made the whole thing come together. Our waiter Jo was awesome. His excitement and desire to be there matched with his knowledge of the place and helpful demeanor made the meal something to come back for!! The root beer may be the best I’ve ever had. Really great place. Can’t wait to go back.
Feel like we found a gem in San Antonio. Definitely recommend. The service was great and the food was amazing! We walked in and were seated almost immediately. My son loved their root beer float. I substituted corn casserole for the chips and I’m so glad I did. I love the historical vibe of the building.
The food was really good, I'm not a connoisseur of German food so what I had I thought was great. It's very historical and very old it's a must try in my opinion. And you may even see a famous person in here.
When we were in San Antonio walking around the streets just above the Riverwalk, we saw Schilos. Being German I love trying German restaurants for some of the unique dishes they offer. We stopped in for breakfast and I ordered the potato pancakes. True to form, they came with applesauce. These were some of the best I had tried. Later that day we stopped in to try one of their Bavarian pretzels with beer cheese. The pretzel came out perfect and the beer cheese was thick unlike some not so good restaurants. The thickness and flavor of the beer cheese is one to not miss! We actually finished the pretzel and I polished off the beer cheese with a spoon, it was that good. One other thing to note is that this is one of the oldest restaurants in San Antonio and the ambiance and decorations are just so cool. This is a must stop while in San Antonio.
We stopped in at Schilo’s and had such a great experience. The atmosphere has that old-school charm that feels both cozy and full of history, and the food really impressed us. We started with the appetizer sampler which was a perfect way to kick things off, then tried the German meal sampler so we could taste a little bit of everything. The schnitzel was crispy and flavorful, and the bratwurst was cooked perfectly with all the traditional sides to match.Of course, the house-made root beer was the highlight (it’s served ice-cold) in a frosty mug and really lived up to the hype. Everything we ordered came out fresh, portions were generous, and the service was friendly and attentive. Schilo’s is the kind of place that makes you want to come back and try something new each time, but also keep ordering the favorites you already know are amazing.
i enjoyed my breakfast at Schilo’s. when i walked in, there were not too many people so i was sit quickly at one of the small tables. my waiter was very nice and kind. i ordered potato pancakes, a deviled egg, and a cup of coffee. everything tasted great! i recommend to stop by for breakfast if you are in town.
The food here was simply fantastic! The potato pancakes were flavorful and the apple sauce that came with them was not Mott's lol it was legit fresh ground/grated apples. The pastrami Reuben was incredible and the dressing served with it put it over the top. Don't forget about a root beer! Service was fast and friendly, I'll be back! I highly recommend passing up all the tex-mex on the river walk and coming here!
We were looking for somewhere for lunch that reminded us of our trip to Germany. This was it! The food was terrific, the service was top notch, and the prices were fair. We started with the sampler and our party of 5 obliterated it almost immediately. The pretzel was the perfect temperature and size. The meats were all cooked to perfection. I had the schweineschnitzel. The outside was crunchy and the inside was moist. The sides were good but the pork was the absolute star. We didn't realize they closed so early so they did start cleaning up around us but every staff member was so kind and insisted that we weren't an inconvenience and that they had to be there to clean up anyway and asked us not to rush. We will definitely return next year during our next trip.
Fantastic place to get breakfast in the San Antonio Riverwalk area. You have to try the root beer float! My daughter got the regular root beer float and I got the adult root beer float with alcohol and it was delicious! I ordered one of the breakfast plates and added a brat for an additional $3. The food was really good but the root beer float was the real treat! Really cool location with a lot of character and history. Definitely a unique spot and a must when visiting the San Antonio area. Keep in mind they serve breakfast all day but close relatively early.
Schilo’s is a fantastic place for delicious German food, great atmosphere and superb service (Thanks Joseph!) Plus it’s very easy access to the San Antonio River Walk. I have been waiting a long time to visit this place since I am in the area only every couple of years and it was worth the wait. We will be back.

It’s a short walk away, not on the Riverwalk. We wanted something different. This place did not disappoint. Excellent food. You’ll find gluten free options and great service. Appropriate for all ages and the prices were very reasonable. Check them out!
Found out this was the oldest restaurant in San Antonio, so I knew I had to check it out. They also make homemade root beer, which definitely caught my attention. The place had a relaxed vibe, and the staff was friendly. But holy smokes, if you like German chocolate cake, this is the place to get it. It was absolutely divine. The root beer was good, different but good, but the real star for me was the German chocolate cake.
Having been to Germany we love stopping by German places when we can. This location appears to only be open for breakfast and lunch. Easy walk from the Riverwalk. Had schnitzel! I had chicken, husband had veal. Great prices, nice portions for lunch, and tasted great! The spaetzle is very good! The corn casserole is tasty. They make their root beer in house and its famous! We had 2 glasses. Server was very attentive and helpful. Service was fast. We were in and out in a timely manner and back out exploring!
We have been coming to San Antonio for decades. This was our first time to try Schilo's for breakfast. It didn't disappoint. We were greeted when we walked in and got seated promptly. We tried avocado toast and added an egg along with the breakfast plate. The service, atmosphere and food were great. Want to come back and try the root beer and lunch. Give it a try if you've never been there before. If your staying at any hotel in the area and want breakfast at a reasonable price come here instead of the hotel. One of the oldest restaurants in town.

Breakfast was awesome, service was friendly and fast and the prices are so reasonable. Hard to believe it’s the oldest place to eat in SA.
This is a casual, friendly and affordable German deli style diner. The portions are good. The service was great. My husband and I were visiting from NYC and here is our feedback about each menu item we ordered: Deviled eggs: 6/10 (needed flavor) Potato pancake: 7/10 Roast beef with gravy: 6/10 Red cabbage: 7/10 Cheesy spatzle: 6/10 Meatloaf:8/10 Sweet potatoes: 8/10 Root beer: 10/10 Overall it was a GOOD experience. Not great but we would come back if we're in the area. We loved the scriptures on their menu and the fact that it's owned by a Vet. Thank you for your service! God bless you.
We arrived in time to avoid the line. Our group of 5 ordered breakfast. We were given a table which needed to be wiped down (they were busy so this was understandable) and while we were waiting for the server to get a towel, the hostess tried to seat another group at our table. It was corrected. We ordered and food came out promptly with the exception of my toast. Our server was informed, another server was also informed (as we hadn't seen our server after the food was brought to the table) and then our original server was reminded again. The group was done eating when my toast was brought out. It's a small thing, but I don't eat bread often, so it was something I was really craving. That is the only reason service was 3 stars. The building and the restaurant history are very interesting and is on their menu a good read while you wait to put in your order. I would go again as I feel this experience may have been a one off.
