Opinions de Izakaya Sakura San Diego
Very good authentic Japanese food. Great service. Comfortable seating. I went because they had Okonomiyaki on the menu and it was excellent. It wasn't on the lunch menu but they made it for me anyway [happily I might add].
My childhood friend treated me to a super ono and oishi dinner. We didn't hold back and are all the wonderful da kine' grinds. Service staff was awesome and conversed with us throughout the night. Everywhere I went in San Diego, I felt the warmth of its citizens. ♥️🌊🌞
If you are looking for authentic Japanese comfort food in San Diego you must try Izakaya Sakura!! It was everything I was looking for. They have a nice variety of different dishes. We tried the Champon Ramen and the Sara Udon. For an appetizer we had Okonomiyaki. Everything was delicious, and generous portions. The atmosphere is inviting and clean. The service is amazing, the staff are very friendly. Next time I come, I will definitely try the sushi, the fish looked amazing and the owner is the one behind the sushi bar. They also have a wide range of alcoholic beverages that I will try next time too! If you have ever been to Japan, and miss the food, come here to be transported back.
Great lunch at Izakaya Sakura! Delicious, authentic Japanese cuisine. Love the ambiance of the restaurant with the wood and Japanese decorations. The Chirashi bowl was very yummy, always fun to get a taste tour of the sea. We enjoyed the curry omelette as well. Friendly staff and quick service. Luckily we didn’t need to wait but after us around 12:30 there was a small wait. Recommend!
My first meal after landing in San Diego from Boston Highly recommend the see eel tempura. It was so good that we placed a 2nd order Very happy with all the food - chicken thigh skewers, chicken meatballs, sukiyaki hot pot (for share), tongue stew, assorted sashimi, salmon skin hand roll and korokke Will for sure come back Free parking available at the parking lot outside
This is a cute little cozy Japanese restaurant tucked away on Convoy Street. Food is delicious and authentic. We came here on a weekday and had a 10-15 minutes wait, but it was so worth it. We were seated fairly quickly and the staff was attentive. Staff was also busy taking sake shot offered by the customers- a recognized way to show gratitude to your server/bartender instead of tipping. It was my first time witnessing it and I loved it. Food was delicious. Highly recommend chirashi don and okonomiyaki! Will definitely come again!
Izakaya Sakura was real authentic Japanese, and very delicious. If Japanese food your craving please give this restaurant a try. You will not be disappointed. The price it's worth it, the selection of variety of different Japanese food was very impressive but the customer service was the impeccable, awesome to intact with the waiters and chiefs very down to earth. Also very child friendly has well so bring the whole family. Highly recommended and will be going back again.
We love coming here and always come right when they open at 5pm because this place gets crowded. We ordered: -Chicken karaage - juicy thigh meat -Sukiyaki udon- when I crave for udon, I come here. The broth is so beefy and lots of tender fatty thin meats. It’s so rich in flavors. -Takoyaki - I like that this is on the smaller side because it’s less wheat flour and more octopus. -Fried meatloaf curry entree - It comes with miso soup and salad. The miso soup is so good. We got spice level 8 for the curry which had a tiny kick. The parking lot is super tight and small that people park on the street. Another reason why we come early is to get a parking spot.
We were actually trying to eat at another restaurant in the same plaza but couldn't get a table for Friday night (all tables there were already booked for the entire night). So we ended up here. We weren't expecting much, but I was pleasantly surprised. I ordered the uni and ikura rice bowl which came with miso soup, fried tofu, and pickled cabbage. Everyone else ordered other items (poke bowls and chirashi bowl). We all thoroughly enjoyed the food. My favorite were the dishes with tofu, you can tell it was freshly made. Even with the miso soup, it was so soft and silky. The restaurant itself felt homey and something you'd stumble into in Japan. It was a little small/tight, but we had enough room to sit comfortably. The staff were all very nice. I'd definitely come back again.
My friends in SD recommended this popular Japanese restaurant to us. The dining room had few seats, so there was a line even during lunch time. I could feel that our server was somehow pushing us. Speaking of their food, we tried several dishes. Curry rice bowl was my favorite. There was minced beef in the curry , which was fantastic with rice. Comparably, the curry udon broth was less flavorful by adding more liquid. The eel tasted a little dry. Miso soups were decent with soft tofu. Salads were mediocre. Their sushi bar was also popular. I saw some customers sitting there and talking with the sushi chef. All in all, their curry rice was one of the best ones I’ve ever had.
The service at this restaurant was terrible. It took over a half an hour for our waiter to acknowledge us. While the restaurant was full, it only has about 20 tables and had 2-4 servers working. Once we placed our order, one entree was at our table within 15 minutes, but other entrees took more than an hour. We did not receive all the food we order after 2 hours. The food was good, but does not make up for the poor service.
Make sure you don’t visit this place 2 hours before they close. There will be no “service”. Server will keep asking you to make an order and after the dishes on the table they won’t respond to you anymore, even we want to order second round of food and sake, until you take out your wallet. I can tell the old sushi chef looks authentic and willing to chat with all Japanese customers. But he should aware that this kind of service is not acceptable in Japan, the place we don’t even need to tips for anything services. I used to like this place, it make me think of my hometown. Now I just feel rudeness and unprofessional at this place.
The service was extremely poor, to the point where it felt like there was no service at all. If you needed a server, you had to walk all the way to the service counter yourself—no one checked on us, and we were not even offered water. Basic hospitality was completely missing. The food service was unbelievably slow. It took an entire hour for all the dishes to finally arrive, which is completely unacceptable. As for the food—there’s almost nothing positive to say. Everything tasted bad. The sushi rice was hard and dry, as if it had been sitting out for days. The takoyaki was undercooked inside, which is frankly unacceptable and concerning. The only dish that was barely acceptable was the omurice. Everything else was disgusting. Overall, terrible service, painfully slow food, and very poor quality. I would never come back and do not recommend this place to anyone.
Despite eating here several times in the past, today was specifically terrible. With very few customers in the restaurant, the ordering process took around 15 minutes and the food started to arrive about 30 minutes later. However one of our dishes (sashimi plate) was notably missing, which was assumed to be arriving soon - but while another 30 minutes passed, no one stopped by our table to check on us and the food never ended up arriving. At this point, we hunt down the staff for answers and are notified that our server never put the order in and now decides to put the order in. Another 40 minutes go by and the food and server are nowhere to be seen. The food ends up arriving now almost an hour and a half into our seating time. At this point, we no longer want this dish - but the server refuses to take accountability or make any amends, blaming our inability to notify them sooner of their mistake and insists that we have to keep it and pay for it. This lack of awareness and thoughtfulness from the staff negates any vaguely good food they serve in my eyes. Even fast food restaurants own up to their mistakes and make amends.
Be aware: there are bees nesting on the roof of the building. I was stung by a bee inside the restaurant, which is a serious safety issue. Unfortunately, the staff did not offer any apology or compensation. Also, I’ve noticed that takeout portions are significantly smaller than dine-in, while the prices are the same. Food is okay, but maintenance and customer care really need improvement.
🚨 AVOID AT ALL COSTS 🚨 This was hands down the worst dining experience of my life. We sat down at 7:00pm with no warning about time limits. At 7:55 our final dish arrived, and just SIX minutes later, a woman who claimed she was from Okinawa stormed over, slammed the bill on our table, and rudely ordered us to leave before 8:10 because our small four-person table was supposedly part of a “reserved” big table. Nobody told us this when we sat down — being rushed out mid-meal like garbage was absolutely humiliating and unacceptable. To make things worse: the $18 roast duck was a complete scam — only 5 tiny, chewy slices of dry duck breast. Service? Nonexistent. No one refilled our water, and we had to beg for plates and utensils. 💥 Overpriced, rude, humiliating. This restaurant is a disgrace. Save yourself the anger and NEVER set foot here.
