This is a great family restaurant option, with reasonable pricing, a relaxed atmosphere, and quick service. They bring chips and salsa (medium spice) to the table promptly. I enjoyed the nachos. The shrimp tacos were okay. Our server was very attentive and very patient with my party--we made a number of order changes, and she took them all in stride.
Didn't realize there was an On the Boarder so close. I was very happy with the service and the food. I will definitely be back soon. ------- The review above was my original review. ------- Since my first time here it has become a frequent stop. Usually once every two or three weeks. Food and service are always to expectations. Happy to continue visiting
Happy Hour was great. Really great and wonderful service . Chips & salsa are the bomb. Happy hour margaritas were good value for the size portion.
The best food in San Diego . Happy hour omg so awesome ! I drive far cussing through traffic to get to those Cali tacos. Service bomb food the bomb . Every Tuesday, best believe im there. Today is Tuesday. See ya there!
First visit to this restaurant. No crowds on a Sunday afternoon. The seating was excellent. You were not right next to another table. You could get a table next to a window or a nice large booth inside the restaurant. The service was absolutely awesome. The manager gave us the happy hour drink price even though we we sitting in another section of the restaurant. The food was delicious and was prepared fast. I was very impressed with everything from the hostess, to the server, the food and the price. I will be entertaining friends and family at this restaurant. This restaurant delivered a 10 today.
Definitely one of the best restaurants my boyfriend and I have been to! We had such a great time, service was attentive and vibe was awesome! Going to be back soon :)
Quite unhappy with regards to the menu. Order the big bordurito which said it was supposed to have a BIG portion of chicken which is what attracted me. I tend to be a picky eater so when I ordered I asked for some things to be removed based off of the list of ingredients. The server did a great job of understanding and taking care of it. However the menu was very misleading. There were items in the burrito that were not listed on the menu which was upsetting. I don't expect everyone to know what I do and don't like, but the menu could have been more clear on it's ingredients. Great service though.
Excellent happy hour and great free chips and salsa. The staff is always very friendly
Great service but I cant remember the lady's name! Great happy hour menu and at first we sat in the bar for the food and she was not bothered by that. It was nice having fresh chips. All food was hot and drinks were tasty. The only comment is one of the staff members who was there wouldn't help us get a new fork after I dropped mine, he said I'll get your waiter this is her table. It's a fork, just a fork. But she brought my fork :)
It's been so long since I've eaten here. At least 17 years. The food is a delicious as I remember it. The service was excellent as well.
Just had lunch at this location today. Great service and very friendly atmosphere at the restaurant. Our server Zachary was very attentive. We did not have to ask for any refills for drinks or salsa and chips. What a great server he is. Keep up the good work Zachary and On The Boarder!!! 10/10 .
I have a fresh halibut fish $32. With garden salad,
I love visiting On The Border! Their staff is friendly and helpful every time. I personally love their selection of margaritas and cocktails, and the food is top notch!
Great service as usual. Casual TexMex. My favorite food.
We came in to the Mira Mesa (San Diego, CA) location on Friday 4/8/22 for happy hour. We had a huge group, it probably was about 30 people at its max, for a going away happy hour for a coworker. The staff were able to actually pull together a very large table for us, and there were 2 servers taking care of our table. They did an amazing job keeping all of our orders straight, and they were exceptionally friendly, energetic, and patient. Really outstanding customer service, and I know from personal experience that it is not easy taking care of a party that large. Happy hour menu is awesome, lots of options to select from, and their gigantic margarita is as big as your head! Thank you again!
Service was great. You might want to know that they add a fee, 1.75% if memory serves. So glad to go back. Really good relleno! Waitress was friendly and welcoming. She made a nice recommendation. Definitely going back.
It's been many years dining here and other On The Border locations. Menu slightly changes each year. Service was wonderful. Surprisingly busy but without a wait for the 6pm hour. Willing to come back as time and opportunities come up
Went to this location and sat at the bar our servers were Kaylee and Linda they were were the nicest servers we have had in quite some time, my Husband and I tend to eat out at least 3 times a week, And are always looking for a place to go to sit at the bar and have some good food and drinks and great conversation. and these Lady's hit the nail on the head.
Food is good but man our server (HUGO JESUS) service was out STANDING! He is such a nice man. It's 10 pm and everyone is in the greatest mood possible in this restaurant ! Our food was delicious I got 3 meat taco with bean and rice. Thanks for hiring nice people... We had a great experience...
Our experience with the General Manager, Carolyn and the catering delivery service from On the Border was absolutely amazing! Carolyn herself ensured everything was perfect from start to finish. The setup was impeccable, and she took the time to explain every detail. The food was incredibly fresh, delicious, and ready to enjoy right away without any need for heating. It was a hassle-free and delightful experience that we will definitely repeat. Thank you, Carolyn, for making our event so memorable!
Samantha, our server, provided exceptional service during our recent visit. We are from Florida and it was our first time dining at this establishment. We were pleasantly surprised by the short wait time when we arrived on a Sunday evening. Samantha was very attentive and ensured that our vegetarian dietary preferences were accommodated. The food was cooked to perfection, especially the delicious avocado enchiladas she recommended, which were not on the menu but she made it happen. The main courses were equally delightful and my children enjoyed them immensely. In fact, we returned to the restaurant a second time within the same week because my children were eager to be served by Samantha again. It was a truly memorable experience and we look forward to visiting again when we return to San Diego.
I met up with some friends for happy hour as it is their usual spot. The server, Kaylee was just fantastic. It was busy, but she did not miss a beat. Solid tacos, lovely margaritas and absolutely superb service.
I've always loved On the Border and this location is well kept and the service was friendly and the food was good. The atmosphere was lively and it was very nostalgic for me!
I went to this establishment for the first time on my first ever time in San Diego, or the United States for that matter. And this restaraunt was genuinely one of the highlights of my trip. It had a warm, upscale vibe to it and the staff were very friendly, but the food blew me away. Not only did they have a vegetarian menu for people with dietary requirements, but they also served us our food very quickly. The food there tasted great and the portion sizes are perfect for the prices there. I would highly recommend eating here, and it is an easy 5/5.
The food is pretty delicious and the drink even more so. Our waitress was a sweetheart and the atmosphere was clean and inviting. We got seated quickly and out order came out quick and fresh. The basket of chips and salsa are amazing. Please doooo try if you're thinking about it.
Heart broken this place closed. This was our family’s go to place anytime we wanted to go out to eat. Their chips and guacamole life were fantastic and better than we have found anywhere else and they had incredible margaritas! Honestly, we never had any complaints about the food. We were typically seated immediately, the longest we would wait was 10 or so minutes. The staff was always friendly and prompt. The atmosphere was chill and clean and had a great vibe. Without OTB (az locations) open we don’t have a favorite go to place as a family anymore. Such a bummer.
Nice ambience & loved their dedicated menu for vegetarians (a rare kind of care for this dietary). Free chips with excellent salsa welcomes you on arrival .. I liked their quesadillas a lot. Burritos, fajitas all are good. Bonus is their non alcoholic mocktails, we loved their mango+strawberry (custom as requested)..
The bartender was fast, and attentive. He told us to sign up for the app and we could get a free chips and queso. Fantastic service
Happy Hour menu was good, not as good as it used to be , portions are smaller now.
I’ve been to lots of OTBs over the years and this location is up near the top. The food is delicious and flavorful every time I’m here. Ultimate fajitas are one of my favorites, along with chili rellenos and Southwest chicken tacos. Chips are warm and fresh, and salsa has just the right kick. Staff is friendly and efficient. Good job OTB!
Very positive experience. Our waitress was terrific and super friendly. The meals were hot and tasty. Had a really good time and will defitely go back. Good prices and lots of free parking. Stop by if you are in the area.
We had a fabulous time at this restaurant. The food was so delicious, I highly recommend the “ultimate fajita” plate. It was more than enough for two people. The queso fries were also perfectly cooked and seasoned. Drinks are well served. Our bill came up to $80 ish after tip for an appetizer, one main course and two alcoholic drinks, average price for San Diego restaurants.
This was our first time dining here. It was a busy Friday evening. It was better than we could have imagined. We had the three sauce burritos (I highly recommend). Our server (Yanet) was amazing. She perfectly timed everything. She kept our drinks full and provided plenty of chips and salsa. We will be back soon!!!
It was my first time visiting this place, and as I mentioned in another review about Mexican food, which is my husband's favorite, we wanted to try this place this time. The menu offered many choices, and I opted for the Combo, which allowed me to create my own plate with 4 items. To be honest, the Empanadas were delicious, and the Tortillas soup was amazing; I thoroughly enjoyed my food. The place was clean, and the staff was friendly and smiling.
Food was ok. Had the Chipotle shrimp tacos but tasted more like sweet bbq. Service wasn't bad. I added a shot to my tequila flight but .... won't go there to drink alcohol.. can't recommend anything unless I go try some other dishes. My companion said the chicken quesadilla was pretty good.
If you're craving Mexican food and are seeking to dine in at a place like no other, you should definitely consider eating at On The Border Mexican Grill and Cantina. The food served there is excellent and not at all ubitiqious. The chicken fajitas we had were delicious - the chicken and vegetables were well cooked, fried rice and beans perfectly prepared, tortillas like no other. In addition, I appreciated the fact that complimentary chips and salsa were given. Refills were also permitted (for free). Hence, for these reasons, I would consider eating at this restaurant again and recommend it to anyone else.
We went to the On The Border at Mission Valley before in our old neighborhood and this was our first time to try our this one in Mira Mesa. We loved it just like before. They have super great deals on Happy Hours, good drinks deal and great appetizers deal. The food quantity and quality are amazing. For my personal recommendations, I highly recommend Long Island Ice Tea for drink and Rolled tacos for food. We also tried their fajitas before, we also loved that. Also the churro dessert are pretty delicious!
I have heard so much about the place’s ambience and its food that I wanted to go there. Let me tell you frankly, I loved the place and the interior. Very beautiful place with the lovely and attractive decor, table setting, and the chandelier made with colorful bottles attracted me more. And not to forget about the falls season decor. Everything was perfect. The hostess was very friendly and attentive. As soon as we arrived, she brought chips and salsa. We ordered Grilled Chicken Fiesta and the OTB’s speciality- Border Smart Chicken Fajitas. The food arrived on time and the Chicken Fajita was sizzling hot. Food was delicious and the portion was well enough for the two of us. It’s absolutely value for money. If I get a chance to visit again, I will surely go there.
My family took me for a birthday lunch yesterday and we each had a meal that was even more delicious than usual. It seems that On the Border is fully back after a tough period after Covid.

Always great service, the best salsa and I am happy that the avocado enchiladas are still offered.

Everything was great from the waiters to the service. But please help the disabled. They should not have to struggle to use a stall because the company refuses to fix the baby changing station within the handicap stall. It is a simple fix to but a strap to keep the babu changing station up when not in use. I was felt so bad foe the two ladies struggle to maneuver the lady into and out of the stall. Have some semblance of decency, please
We got chicken fajitas to go and it was delicious. It was better than I expected! We also got yummy guacamole, refried beans, and chips and salsa. The salsa was very good and pretty spicy. The tortillas were quite thin but still very tasty. The prices were typical for a sit down Mexican restaurant but still reasonable. We would definitely go again!
Went with some friends for happy hour. Tried the margarita with beer upended in it, not bad sort of like a slurpee, with a beer finish. After the initial decent service, we had to keep getting up and hunting for our server, or ordering from the bar (not the end of the world but, it wasn't super busy, so just felt less taken care of). Food offerings were decent to good bar food. All were warm, not hot but, tasty. Healthy options were not really available. Overall fine experience, as expected, not amazing.
Food and service were good. Table and menu were very sticky.
We went on a Friday night so it was quite busy. There was room in the dining room but we opted to hang out at the bar and just grab a quick bite and a drink. We have been to this location and the Escondido location before and they are always good. They have a great happy hour with lots of food and drink specials. The entire staff was nice, greeted us as we walked in and as soon as we sat at the bar they were there to ask if we needed anything or had any questions. It was pretty loud but not too bad and people were singing along with the music so it made it fun. We just grabbed a beer and my standard vodka club soda and decided to split the sampler platter. It was tasty and very filling, almost too much (we could t finish it). Great value though, a little bit of everything for under $18. we got our food and drinks really quickly (especially for as busy as it was) and everyone/everything was good. For sure swing by if you're in the area and looking for someplace to hang out and chill for a bit.
Took some guests here for lunch, and they enjoyed it. Big portion sizes, outdoor seating, drink refills, and good service. As a vegetarian I had few options but I appreciate they put vegan and vegetarian options on the menu. I got the portobello mushroom bowl. While it was smokey and tasty, the portion size was rather small. It was almost designed as a salad rather than full meal. But if you don't mind carbs you can fill up with chips and salsa. Oh, and everyone gets their own salsa bowl - go ahead and double dip!
A good OTB location. In San Diego, there are a lot of Mexican options, but OTB is a good crowd-pleasing chain for Tex Mex. Our server was so attentive and friendly, with chips on the table almost immediately. The food was tasty, portions were great, and we have no complaints. It’s not authentic, but it’s good.
Definitely will give this place another shot. Tried the honey shrimp tacos but only got halfway through as my mouth was on fire from the sauce. The guacamole is on point for sure.
We stopped by just after 3 pm and took advantage of both the lunch menu (good until 4) and the happy hour menu . Lunch fajitas are always our favorite and it didn't disappoint . It's probably the main reason we keep coming back. Tortilla chips were a bit of a let down as they were too thin and too brittle and way too salty. Our server, who was also the bartender, handled the dual roles quite nicely. Note that there's a mandatory 3% surcharge due to city's mandated minimum wage law.
Lately I've been coming here with a friend after walking around Lake Miramar. It's Tuesday, happy hour. I ordered the queso fries. The food here is not gourmet, but it fills one's stomach as one thirstily quafs the Dosarita. Dos Equis goes really well with a margarita. The service is usually very good!
Well this review is long overdue. We recently had a business trip to San Diego, CA. Since we don't live there anymore we craved Mexican food. Our first impression was great the atmosphere was festive and the restaurant is clean. My husband ordered a 'California Burrito' and for myself a 'Tostada Salad'. The food arrived quickly since we had just arrived in San Diego and made our way to the only viable restaurant that was still open, yet is was about 10 min before closing. Linda our waitress was super nice esp. since she didn't mind how late we arrived. During our stay we ate there about 3 times. Well it was easy to just walk there from the hotel. Then we got some exercise walking back to the hotel, better for digestion. By the photos you will see our dishes from previous days. To me food was amazing, full of flavor and add fast add we can tell, close to authentic Mexican cuisine with appealing presentation. Our waitresses were Linda, Claudia and I think Janet. They were incredible and professional and their uniforms were clean, with a little color from makeup. I enjoyed taking photos of the restaurant as it was well decorated, full of charming, spacious style. Definitely I recommend On The Border Mexican Grill Restaurant!
This place is usually always good. Went there with my daughter's today for lunch. It appeared they were under staffed. It took us a while for our server to come over, the food was not that hot or that good. It wasn't very busy or otherwise I would have took that into consideration.
Sometimes you're in the mood for the type of Mexican food that's served with healing helpings of Spanish rice and refried beans. They have a dog friendly patio with plenty of seating and heaters, but part of the reason they're only getting 4 stars is the patio stayed kinda dirty the whole time we were there. Near where we sat was clean, but we had to carry our dogs out to keep them from eating all the junk off the floors. The other reason I'm dinging them is the service was a bit lackluster. They forgot to bring the tortillas for my wife's fajitas, and she had to go inside and find someone, even though we told the person who brought the food. It wasn't a big deal, just the whole dinner it didn't feel like we were checked on that often. With the bad parts out of the way, like I said sometimes you're in the mood for the type of Mexican food that is ubiquitous across the country, the type served on bright colored plates with heaping helpings of rice and beans. Who cares if it's authentic or not, because it's really tasty regardless. My wife got fajitas, solid as always. I got the Superior Dinner, which is like a sample platter of entrees. My favorite thing on there was the mini chimichanga, if I could order a whole plate of just those I would. You get unlimited chips and salsa as well, which feels like more of a rarity these days. They have a wide selection of margaritas, we both liked ours. The barrel aged rita was actually quite a bit, they gave me a small glass and the shaker and I got I think 3 refills out of it, so it felt like a good bang for my buck. We will definitely come here again, but only when the weather is warm. It felt kind of dreary on the patio in the dead of winter. San Diego has so many varieties of Mexican food, and this lands solidly on the "rice and beans" list. Our bill was pretty low, even with drinks, so we will certainly give them another chance once the weather warms up and we aren't the only ones using the patio.
OtB brings me back to my past. I remember frequently eating here 20+ years ago when I lived in Arizona. Honestly, not much has changed. Even the decor at this location while a little worse for wear, was quite reminiscent of the AZ location. I guess that’s the beauty of a chain restaurant, consistency. Service was friendly and very efficient. We had margaritas, warm chips and salsa within moments of being sat. House margaritas were definitely on the more powerful side which I loved. Oh and the chips, same as years ago, thin halved corn tortillas fried golden and crispy, salsa, also the same with a mild fresh taste. Apps.. can’t go wrong with their Queso Fundido. Spoon a few tablespoons of creamy melted cheese onto a freshly made hot flour tortilla, game over. Was exactly how I remembered it. Honestly compared to other local Mexican restaurants OtBs version wasn’t greasy and broken; pays to be doing something for a long time. We also had their guacamole, needed more lime and salt but that we an easy fix. Entrees, I had Ultimate Fajita’s, chicken, shrimp, steak and carnitas all served on a bed of peppers, onions and squash. I thought I’d hate the squash but it was pretty darn good dunked in the accompanied hot butter. They came out sizzling hot and delicious. My hubby had the Enchiladas Suizas. I had a few bites, pretty good but didn’t really compare to my fajitas. All in all we had a good time and left very satisfied. Given that we live downtown, I’d be hard pressed to drive all the way there unless of course I was in the area or feeling nostalgic.
Excellent food excellent service right around the corner from my house. Can't get better than that.

Not my favorite. Got the enchiladas suizas. The food came fast, but it was lukewarm, and the chicken inside the enchiladas had fish flavor. Service was good though.
Your typical white washed Mexican restaurant. Nothing really felt authentic. To be expected though from a chain restaurant. Had the California burrito and my girl had the chicken enchiladas. Both were very bland. Both the rice and beans seemed to be out of a can. Nothing tasted home made. The strawberry lemonade was good though. Everything else including service was meh. If you’ve never had Mexican food ever, than this is your spot for the most part.
I ordered large pitcher of Modelo Especial, but it tasted flat. The quality of the food wasn't that good either.
They have a great Taco Tuesday and happy hour. Most of the servers are also wonderful here. I think the hostesses need some improvement though. There have been multiple occasions where they told me "no we cannot take you on the patio," but then a server would accommodate. You'd think that they would check with the server before telling a customer no. I can understand a miscommunication once or twice, but this has occurred almost every time we have been there with our dogs. Other than that, it's a great location with great servers and decent food. One of my favorite tacos is the "California Taco," but it's a hit or miss because sometimes the meat is chewy. The chicken tacos on Taco Tuesday are pretty good too.
We came here for the fajitas. We got the two meat family meal W/ chicken and steak. The chicken was good and plentiful, as was the 2 or 3 lbs of onions/ peppers. BUT the steak was very tough and grisselly and on top of the we were only served about 1/3 of the beef vs the chicken. What's w/ the 3.5% surcharge?!!! Another think I dont understand, is why isn't salt and pepper on every table?!
This used to be our favorite Mexican food restaurant, not this particular one since there all closed by our home. This one was so so. Birria tacos were.more oil and grease than anything and lacked flavor. Half of our empanadas were over cooked/burnt. Waiter was nice but not attentive, asked foe the queso dip for the chips and he brought more salsa after a long wait and we already had our food.
Went for lunch with a friend. Good place for queso dip and americanized mexican food. Service was good!

Was looking forward to some margs for a girls Galentines/birthday dinner. We got a few different varieties of margaritas and they were all disappointing. Pretty much sugar water with barely any tequila. The avocado fries were soaked in oil. The guacamole was made at the table but in spite of asking for more lime and spice, it was bland. The chicken in the fajitas was very bland. I ended up adding loads of salsa and guac to make it a little better. The mushroom spinach quesadillas were the best. The veg quesadilla was good too. The service was good. Overall the food and drinks need to really improve.
Beware that the Fish tacos only includes 2 tacos, despite not mentioning this on the menu; also the photo clearly shows 3 tacos. Ordered a 4 ounce border style signature queso ($12+) and it didn't even come with chips. This was an online order and their prices for the same items are more expensive on DoorDash than in the restaurant. To recap, it was over $30 for two small fish tacos, and an expensive, small queso dip (tasted like the nacho cheese from a can), without any chips. Other than the disappointing queso dip, the fish tacos themselves weren't bad, just under a 4 out of 5.
The food has gone way down in quality over the years. We wanted to eat on the patio and there were not enough heaters to open the patio. The carne asada was too salty to enjoy at all. It tasted smokey and burnt. The empanadas were beef but you could not taste beef at all. It tasted like mushy cheese only. The edges of the pastry part tasted burnt. The only good thing was the service but the food is absolutely awful. I actively recommend people NOT to go to this place.
I come from the Boston area, and On The Border was "above average" compared to most "Mexican" restaurants there. Obviously here in San Diego, most of the food at "On The Border" is awful compared to what you can get from a myriad of legit, authentic local Mexican restaurants. I say "most" and not "all" because the one thing On The Border has engineered of value are their complimentary chips and salsa, which stand up to the best chips and salsa that even a city like San Diego has to offer. My advice: Come here for chips & salsa and drinks. Maybe order some guacamole (which they make in front of you, table-side.) Avoid everything else.

Worst place ever for enchiladas. The other food is good, but the enchiladas are horrible. Winter last year, their advertising tech makes enchiladas the real enchiladas with chili all over the plate and spread out what not so when I delivered dry look like a dry flower dump I’ll never come again horrible
Asked us if we wanted guacamole to get started as if it was complimentary and then only at the end did they reveal they charged us an outrageous 10 dollars for a tiny bowl of guac. They absolutely know what they were doing. Food was mid and dry and flavorless.
Never coming back. The food is getting worse, by saving money on good ingredients.
Chips and salsa are horrible! Cost for the food is horrible! The only thing good was the server! Other than that, everything was not worth the $100 spent for food, 2 beers, a wine, and god awful margarita that was all ice for $15!!! I literally had 4 sips and it was done. Never will go back
So I hadn't been too on the boarder in a long time.. sad to say I won't be going back.. the food was NOT good what so ever . The service was good but yea I just can't see myself going back to eat somewhere and spending money on food that was just horrible... the rice tasted like the bagged rice you get from the store the quick microwaved rice and it was still hard . The empanadas had like no feeling . I can't believe they're still in business. Don't waste your money.
