Best burritos in the area, open 24/7 is a life saver
The burritos are giant so have a big appetite & more expensive that expected.
Took my family based on other peoples reviews and it did not disappoint. The California burrito is quite filling as with the other burritos. Basically two meals in one. Also, there are cheese quesadilla and beef. Tacos were very good. Not from here but if I’m ever back in the area, I will go again.
Drive through feels a bit slow sometimes but the bacon breakfast is well worth the wait. Just make sure you come hungry. You could finish half this burrito and still be able to toss it in a sock and use it as an effective self defense weapon.
The Vallarta's on Genesee near Balboa is bomb. I love their cheese enchiladas with green sauce. My husband loves their chili relenos. Go inside to order...the drive-through takes forever.
Everything was pretty cool. The only real exception was the prices. Just because the burritos were pretty big doesn't mean that you have to make them Superly Duperly expensive. That's exactly what you have done. Otherwise, everything else was pretty good. So there's room for improvements. Please keep on doing what you're doing, but with improvements. The size of your burritos are good. Just bring the prices down lower than what they are right now. You should offer Military Discounts to all the Armed Forces. That includes all of the Active Duty, the Reservists, and the Retired Veterans with an Honorable Discharge. Also, you should have offers like, for example, if a person comes to your restaurant a lot, making them a regular, or even if they don't come to the restaurant like that, but they have been coming quite a few times, then that person's 4th or 5th time that they come, they should get whatever their order is, for free. It doesn't matter what, how much or how big their items are. On their 4th or 5th visit, their order or orders should be free,or at least 70% to 90% or more off of the items that person has ordered.
Their cubed grilled chicken is the best I've ever had. I've had both their shredded chicken chimichanga and the cubed grilled chicken chimichanga. I favor the cubed grilled chicken. More flavor. You can see by my picture the portions are you HUGE. This is the shredded chicken chimichanga
Really good fish taco! There's a reason why there's always a line. The best in Clairemont for sure. I asked them to make me an old-school mixed burrito and they did. It was delicious and I hope they consider it putting it on the menu
They have the best breakfast burrito. I always order the bacon burrito with no potatoes. It is so big that it makes two meals. Another one of my favorites is their chili relleno burrito. I recently tried their beef and carne asada taco. The beef taco was nice and crunchy. The carne asada was big enough for me to make 3 tacos. I think I will try their carnitas or rolled tacos next.
Don’t be fooled by the 24/7 drive thru - Vallarta’s burritos are fresh, delicious, huge, packed with tons of ingredients, and reasonably priced. Their carnitas are some of the best in the area, while their service is quick and friendly as heck. I’m also a big fan of their beans. Oh, and their salsa isn’t that watery liquid you’re always disappointed with. It’s got great flavor and is basically crack.
We found everything we were looking for. Parking is easy and huge. Big selection!
Wow the California burrito was good. It was too big for me. The fish tacos were amazing. Would definitely get again.
Ask for the cheese melted on your Carne asada fries or you're missing out! I've been going to Vallarta's for years, ever since it replaced EZ-Take-Out when I was about fifteen years old. It wasn't until about a year ago that I heard someone ask for the cheese melted on their fries, and I could never go back. You'll notice in my photo that my cheese isn't melted. Vallarta has the best hot sauce in San Diego along with El Cotixan, but I think overall the product here is better.
Vallarta has the best biggest burritos in town and they are DELICIOUS. And you've got to try the Christian fries it's a pile of french fries covered in guac sour cream cheese carne asada add fried eggs bring two people to eat that because it's huge
Came on a Tuesday dinner rush and the drive through was at least 7 cars deep. We parked and walked in, and waited no more than 5 minutes between walking in and walking out with food. Unimposing storefront, but the food was excellent. The carne asada plate in itself was 3 portions of food. They were very generous with the meat! Carne asada burrito left me in a food coma. Will be back.
Very good food, prepared well, clean kitchen, reasonable price. What else can one ask for! We always come here whenever we get a chance going down to San Diego.
Vallarta Express is always good in my book. Their Carne Asada fries are SUPER BOMB! Love them. The amount of steak, cheese, guacamole and sour cream are plentiful and it's just delicious. When I lived in Rancho Bernardo/Poway, I use to always go to a place called Oscar's Mexican food for my Carne Asada fries because I would always get off work at 2-3AM, but they stopped being open late (even when their signs said 24 hours, but multiple times arriving at 3AM and they wouldn't be open) so I started stopping at Vallarta Express off of Mira Mesa Blvd instead cause they were actually open late, and I fell in love with them. They are absolutely delicious! This location is no exception! Also very amazing and delicious Carne Asada fries here as well. I've now been able to eat Carne Asada fries at all 3 Vallarta Express locations and out of them all, the vote for the best one is gonna probably be this location, with the Mira Mesa location in Very, VERY close 2nd to this one. I finally got to order Carne Asada fries again from this small chain here in San Diego and I am a very happy Camper this morning hahaha. Who said that Carne Asada fries weren't breakfast food? NO ONE! Hahaha. Time to chow down and have a great day.
Hands down this is my favorite mexican express food ! The portions are BIG and the quality is fresh! 💕
Home of the legenary Christian Fries which is Carne Asada fries with fried egg and bacon on it. Big Vallartas fan, been going here for years and it has quality meat as well as pretty nice portions. Nice salsa bar and most of the locations are open 24 hours, seven days a week. Would recommend this to anyone in San Diego who wants to eat some nice Mexican food.
Vallarta’s has the best breakfast burrito in San Diego!! I would recommend the bacon breakfast burrito (add guac if you’re feeling up to it ☺️). This is my favorite thing to order before a flight. The burrito is the best mid flight snack (meal) anyone could ask for lol. Also the red hot sauce and mild green sauce they include on the side is top notch *chefs kiss*
Visiting San Diego area, and the rental car representative suggested Vallarta Express. Visited this location, and it was satisfying. I ordered an al pastor (didn't have, so they gave me adobada) burrito 🌯. The meat tasted real fresh, and the pieces of meat had chargrilled edges which was great. Note: burritos do not come with rice or beans. Being from SF, we're accustomed to that standard. I didn't get my burrito with rice and beans, and I didn't mind not having it. Next time, I'll try it with rice and beans. The burrito was big, filled with protein, and guacamole. Great experience. Next time, I'll get a surf and turf California (fries 🍟 inside) burrito. They serve the burritos with green sauce and their special sauce.
OMG!!! The fish Tacos are more than worth their price here. Use to go to a spot in National City and every spot around that area charged me $5 or more for each fish taco. So would only go on Taco tuesday when they did 50% off lol. But man Vallarta not only charges $4.75 for each taco. They put two corn totillas per fish taco. And when you see how stuffed the one fish taco is. You can take one of the Tortillas.....and MAKE ANOTHER TACO!!! Bro. This spot is open 24/7 has competitive price and they serve you fair sizes. So far I need to try everything else so i. sorry if im only excited about the fish tacos for the two times ive been there. Will keep you guys posted and make sure to put better pics up next time with my real camera.
Legendary food! I have to be honest, I didn't try a lot from their menu because their California Burrito just hits every time, could eat it every day. Food, Service and Atmosphere 10/10. Can't wait to be back! Thanks Vallarta!
Small drive-through taco shop. Walk in if you don’t mind eating outside under a covered patio near a fairly busy street. I highly recommend the garden omelette which has delicious fresh veggies including zucchini! Flour tortillas and red salsa were also very good. Beans and rice were great too.
I really only needed some sides to go with my quesadilla. A side of refried beans, chips and guacamole. I was super stoked because I bought all that for under $10. They didn’t give me a huge bag of chips, which was awesome, and they were hot and crispy! Guacamole was perfect and the refried beans were great. Then I got to try their salsa which she gave me an extra side of..yummmmm. Super happy, thank you. I’ll be back.
I ordered a shrimp burrito which was very large and it contained a lot of medium sized shrimp. It was very good. I also ordered a crispy shelled beef taco. The beef seemed to have been cooked in a broth as it was moist and tender. The taco was topped with a large amount of lettuce and cheese. It was great! I will be going back.
Vallarta Express is off-the-charts good. As someone visiting from San Francisco, I was blown away by the veggie burrito I got here. It was warm, the ingredients were fresh and it had the perfect balance of sauces inside — it all came together beautifully. The star of the show for me still wasn’t the burrito; it was the salsas. The two salsas they have (orange/red and green) were my absolute favorite. The red one was numbingly spicy, and the green one was more neutralizing and fresh. 10/10 would revisit.
One of my favorite taco places in SD. They’re very generous with the hot sauces. I love the green. Their fries are truly loaded, they’re so heavy in the bag! You wouldn’t think to order a salad through a Mexican drive through, but I really love their Mexican Caesar. The creamy Pepita dressing is amazing. I some times order it without the salad to put on my tacos. All portions are very generous and they’re speedy.
The Cali Burrito was excellent! Great size and the oils didn't pool at the bottom, which is a huge plus. Fries inside the burrito were alright (not soggy but not too crispy), and I enjoyed the "red" sauce a lot since it was quite hot. Customer service was good as well, I didn't go through the drive-thru but I don't think I've been to any other place where you can order a Cali burrito at a window. Didn't like the chips and guac.
the best food you'll ever find all those comments saying this place ain't the best if you're broke just say that , yea it's expensive but it's everything is fresh and well made

I've been going there for 10 years. It never disappoints. Even the hot carrots are the best--super friendly staff.
eggs carne asada potatoes and melted cheese , always worth the stop . Carne asada burrito bestest around the area . Customer service is chill . Drive thru sometimes busy but worth the wait .
Should be called "Sunsets Tacos" enjoy the outdoor seating area.\nService is so fast I sometimes skip the drive thru for faster service. The outdoor seating sets a good vibe
Very clean place! Not much parking, primarily a drive through but a few tables inside and outside. Great serving sizes, great beans and chips. Delicious.
Food is a 10 out of 10. Which is why i go back with crummy customer service.
I ordered their Vegetarian burrito and it was absolutely massive. It has a lot of flavor and tasted really good. Would definitely recommend it for any vegetarians that are looking to get a lot of food for the money and at any time of the night.
The staff redid a chicken dish when the first one was too spicy (picante).
The food tasted good but was very cold.
I had a chicken chimichanga and an horchata here. Everything tasted good but isn’t really authentic. I suppose you could say it’s Californian Mexican food not really authentic Mexican food. But I love both so it’s cool :) Prices are good and you get a lot of food. I’d like to try more from the menu next time.
They charge .50¢ per credit card purchase, so pay with cash. Dependably good, open late. Outdoor seating mostly covered. Drive thru. The 4 beef rolled tacos for @$10 are smothered in cheese and a guacamole and sour cream mix over lettuce. I usually ask for no lettuce. This time they weren't crispy in the middle of the roll, they were a bit soggy. What would work better is using more sustainable to-go containers rather than Styrofoam.
Food/Taste/Flavor: 5/5 - can never go wrong with their Christian Fries. Enough food to gorge yourself and still have leftovers. Love the runny egg, saltiness from the bacon, refreshing sour cream, plethora of cheese, and enough sauce to drown yourself in. Only ask is even more sauce if possible! Ambience: 1/5 - walk in to order and we were unable to social distance from the next person to order. Bro was amazing at how quickly he was scooping the avocados but noticed most of the cooks were not wearing face covering in a tiny space :( sitting outside was pretty fun since you hear the cars scraping the driveway and street when they turn too quickly Service: 5/5 - the two cashiers are amazing in balancing orders from the drive through, phone, and walk-ins Value for price: 5/5 - still one of the cheapest places especially when considering quantity of food
Decided to stop by Vallarta Express since they are open 24/7! What a luxury! Coming from Norcal. Two of us ordered: -carne asada quesadilla $12.60 -carne asada taco $6.05 Portions are huge. The taco I was skeptical since $6 for a taco is a bit outrageous, but it was essentially a baby burrito. Unfortunately, if you wanted smaller portions, you might be forced to upgrade or eat a bit more.. Quesadilla was great for a late night meal...although I do wish there was sour cream. Tacos did not come with limes which was unfortunate. Ordered via drive thru. I did see some space inside that people were ordering from...not sure if there is seating inside. Again, for 24/7 Mexican food, I'm in!
I’ve come here on and off over the years. It’s always been a solid Mexican spot, especially for late night eats. It’s not necessarily a top-tier taco shop, since most of those are pretty much one-offs, except maybe for Tacos El Gordo. But, it’s definitely pretty good, on par with San Diego’s El Cotixan and Castañeda's chains. My favorite items specific to Vallarta are the veggie burrito, fajita burrito, chimichanga, and adobada quesadilla. The jamaica is pretty good here too. Their salsa is also pretty legit! They only have red and green, but they’re both solid and certainly on the same level as El Cotixan’s. It’s worth trying out, especially after a late night of hanging out in Kearny Mesa or on the way back north from North Park.

I ordered a two enchilada plate, one cheese and one beef, plus a plate of rolled tacos. The rolled tacos were soggy for the most part and only slightly crispy on the edges. They tasted like they had been sitting for a while. The enchiladas were cold to the touch, and the cheese wasn’t even melted, which you can clearly see in the picture. Beens and rice were okay. Paid $35 for this and was really disappointed. Not going back.
Nice counter staff, average service speed. Food is not exceptional; Southern California standard Mexican takeout. $15 for a two taco combo, and almost $4 for a large drink. For me, that's expensive. Poor value for money.
Ordered California Burrito the other day and it was good and rather large, but did lack flavor. On the other hand the horchata was very good.
The food is good but the employees are always so rude and dry. There’s no customer service
The food itself was pretty bland, but the salsa was pretty decent. Asada was a little dry and the adobada was pretty tasteless. Service was quick even with a big line. The main redeeming qualities is that it is 24 hours and the portions are huge. Would be worth trying somewhere else
While the portions are generous, the service fast and friendly enough, the food was lacking flavor. While the adobada and chicken had a good char/smoky flavor, that was about it. It lacked any seasoning whatsoever, even the sauces were mid at best. The rice and beans were in the same boat with no flavor. They give you a boatload of sauce and I understand why. Probably wouldn’t recommend unless you are really hungry.
This place is ok but not my go-to. There’s a few things I’ve ordered where it wasn’t good enough for me to finish or order again. Like the Cesar salad (good sauce I didn’t like the chicken), chicken enchilada eh, etc. But I was impressed with the beef taco, and the beans and rice were ok!
I would give this place 5 stars except of the fact that the last 3 times I have gone, my chili relleno burrito has been full of seeds. And this last time today I take 3 bites and my 3rd bite is nothing but a hard and very sharp piece of pepper stem. Not a fun thing to bite into. And In addition to that today my pepper and only the pepper tasted like freezer burn. But today was the first day that it has ever been anything but delicious though. Even with the last 3 times (and I always go with my boyfriend and we always get the same thing.) both our burritos being filled with seeds they still tasted good. Edit : I contacted management about the issue and they did replace my food. And the burrito was the normal yummy burrito!
Usually the best food u can find is at the little holes in the wall kind of places. I had a beef taco - had to dig it out of all the lettuce and cheese - taste was very good but got soggy on one side of shell very quickly. The rolled tacos had hardly any guacamole. Instead they covered it w sour cream and tons of lettuce w very little cheese. One bite and the entire piece of meat came out. Not impressed. The Vallarta express in PB is much better
Food was good and meat was not salty so that was appreciated. However the carne asada was cut into nice chunks they definitely mixed in old meat or over coocked dried meat that was noticeable and I had to separate and throw away. Portions were not what I expected. California burrito tasted good but they were very skimpy on everything in the burrito. I also got the fish taco which was ok. Over packed on the cabbage and not enough sauce. Hardly any inside seating so not a good idea for a family to expect to sit and eat
This has been our go to taco shop for a while. However they’ve disappointed me the last few times. You need to make sure you’re VERY specific on what you want or they just give you what they think. Last few times they have messed up my orders and it’s extremely annoying considering we don’t live close by at all. Yes the burritos have always been bomb but the service is beyond me! They’ve lost a loyal customer just because of that unfortunately.
I've been going to this place for over 10 years and 8 times out of 10 they do not get my order correct but i never complain and just remove whatever i told them not to put in my food. It's like they completely ignore what i say. Not only that but the customer service is horrible 90% of the time. It seems like the employees are mad to be there for some reason. After placing an order this evening and the very poor customer service I received I will no longer give them my business. The owners need to train their employees on how to talk to customers and take orders correctly. This place used to so great now it seems as though the customer service went completely down the drain. I'm not a complaining individual by any means but this place literally has the worst customer service I've ever experienced and has a very hard time if getting orders correct.
$18 for drive-thru nachos is bonkers. Opted for enchiladas. They were Luke warm so cold while eating them. Salsa offered was in packets, not homemade. Way overrated.
Been coming here for 6 years and recently there has been a decline in service and preparation of the food. Over priced tacos with poor communication asking questions about drinks and menu options. Also tacos were lacking big time on ingredients and preparation. The option to post pictures isn’t here or else I’d show exactly what I’m talking about.
This review is for this visit only I went by today and my plate was $18.39 they forgot to put my guacamole so I drove back told the lady and she didn't believe me she wanted to see my plate so I showed it to her and they end up giving me this little hot sauce cup size of guacamole I think they should have at least given me what they normally put on or more for my hassle of driving back but it seemed like her and the cook didn't care, cuz I heard her talking to him, but normally the service and food is good here
Normally I'd give this place 5 stars, but all it takes is one moody employee to ruin your experience. (We ordered 2 burritos and rolled tacos. Asked for 2 handfuls of red hot sauce and 1 handful of green hot sauce. When we didn't get the desired amount, I asked for more red. He responded with "I gave you like 20." Um, actually you gave us 7.) If you like hot sauce like we do, take your business to El Portal down the street. They don't question why you want so much hot sauce.
Ordered california burrito. Soggy, not tightly wrapped and to top it all cold to the touch chicken just out of the fridge not cooked at all. The cheese wasn’t even melted in the burrito it was a cold as the chicken. I tried microwaving when I got home but was frustrated I was serve a cold California chicken burrito that didn’t not taste great at all. Threw it straight in the trash where it belongs. I don’t get the good reviews. It’s average at best, much better options. I have been to Cotixan Mexican Restaurant many times without being served uncooked refrigerated Cali burrito where the cheese doesn’t even melt and the burrito isn’t wrapped. I will give my $15 donation to this place but will never return.
I’ve been coming here for about 10+ years, I alwys use to enjoy their burritos even though they’ve always were a bit more expensive compared to others nearby. I’ve noticed in the last year or two, not only have they augmented their prices but have also gone down in quality. From the meat, tortillas, to even placing salsas in plastic bags compared to the cups. Overall, it seems like they’ve lost what made them out to be a solid taco shop. Vallarta has lost a costumer!
Date of Service: 4/20/2025 This was my first time trying this chain, and unfortunately, the experience left a lot to be desired. I went through the drive-thru and ordered a carne asada torta and Christian fries. The torta was disappointing—the meat was dry, cold, and oddly scattered across the plate instead of being neatly assembled inside the torta. It felt like very little care was put into its preparation. The Christian fries were also served cold, and the fries themselves were soggy, lacking any crispness—as if they had only briefly touched the fryer. While the toppings (sour cream and guacamole) were generous, it honestly felt like they were being used to cover up the poor quality and temperature of the food. For a $15 torta and $20 fries, I expected much better. I’m willing to give them another shot in case this was just an off night, but based on this visit, I left disappointed. Edit: I live 10 minutes from this place, so the food should of not been as cold as it was.
I was craving a carne asada burrito 🌯 and rolled tacos. I went to this Vallarta on Genesee rd. & Balboa. I waited 15 minutes to order my food, and when I got to the drive-thru window, somehow, my order ticket didn't get to the cook. I had to wait another 15 minutes for my food to be cooked. I was very disappointed in the service and the food. My burrito was not wrapped as good to keep all the meat inside of it. The rolled tacos were soaked in sour cream and guacamole. I like my rolled tacos crispy and not soggy.

The food is good, but my drive-thru experience was disappointing. I was greeted with a curt "Go ahead," without a hello or any pleasantries. When I reached the window, the employee who took my order—a guy with tattoos on his neck—told me the total and charged my card while staying engrossed in his phone. He handed over the food without acknowledging me, even when I thanked him. He seemed very unhappy. This place needs to improve its customer service.
I have to say i used to loce this place but I just got my burrito and 3 bites in I'm chewing on a damn staple!!! I asked for my money back and a new burrito but they said they could only give one. I'm bummed this place has gone down hill...their lucky I noticed immediately and not swallowed my bite! I really don't know what else to do but post this review ..patrons beware
I have been overcharged multiple times, I get a receipt and when I check on the credit card they overcharged me, sometimes 50 cents other times 2,50. I’m not sure if the cashier is tipping themselves or what, but this is wrong.
Hate leaving bad reviews. Finally had enough after our fifth consecutive bad experience. And I would have written to them directly but they have no option for contacting them on their website. They screw up the order more often than not. The meat is dry, especially the pollo asado. Bean and cheese burrito just has a pile of unmelted cheese in the middle of it. Every time. They started putting their salsa in sealed plastic pouches some months ago. Within 12-24 hours, the pouches swell up to the point that you can’t open them without salsa spraying everywhere
Horrible customer service. The 2 ladies working there were rude and gave me dirty looks I was just buying a $15 dollar burrito with my hard earned money!!! Very disappointed I won’t be back
Ordered bean tostada and shredded beef taco. Both lacked any flavor regardless how much hot sauce i poured on them. The taco was almost all lettuce. The tostada was a sloppy mess and soggy. I will not eat there again.
We used to love the chile relleno burrito here but we ate it today and it was really bad for a $14 takeaway burrito! There was no rice, barely any beans, no pico de gallo, we got squash instead of extra fajita veggies which used to be bell peppers and onions we paid for.. may be they got a new cook but it just went from my go to place to not going there anymore
Very bad customer services I’ll like to rate it 0 All I asked her to put something on the side and she start talking shit in Spanish language
Bought surf and turf burrito and canesda fries with carrots total up to $30 mind you I live 25 min away from this location came home to my surprise it's burt fries and meat now I called in and they want me to drive 25 min back to take them the food for refund smh it's the Audacity for me. Don't worry I will be bringing food back this is the picture.
I’ve been going to Vallarta for a while and this time I had a surf and turf burrito to go and for the first time in my life and am thoroughly unhappy with my food. Half the burrito was what looks like a vegetable soup mix of vegetables. Corn, carrots, peas and even shredded lettuce and not to mention the rice as well. Yes there were shrimp and carne asada as well as sour cream and guacamole, but come on really ???? You now put peas, carrots Lima beans, lettuce and corn in a burrito and it doesn’t state that anywhere on the menu at all. I am so disappointed that after 10 years of getting quality food this is not even a half good post . I am sorry but you have lost my business Vallarta Express on genesee in Claremont Mesa.
This is a very inconsistent restaurant. My last drive-in order included a pollo asado burrito, but I received a quesadilla with horribly dried out chicken and gloomy cheese. When I sent an email to management about my negative experience - as the signage in the drive thru specifically asks you to do - I received no response. So: they screw up, give you inedible food (my dog wasn't even tempted to try it), and ignore your concerns. Their food is too expensive to just cross your fingers and hope they get it right. I'll be looking for a different go-to drive thru for my Mexican fast food needs.
