Opinions de Cali-Spartan Mexican Kitchen San Jose
Food is absolutely amazing. Traditional options like chile verde or enchiladas, are very authentic. Their modern options like quesabirrias or cali tacos are also very tasty. Good service, had $1 tacos at a public event last year. Orange salsa is one of the best that I’ve ever had. Very consistent and spicy!
Banger taco/burrito spot in downtown SJ, right next to the college. They've got good prices for what they serve(i.e. A massive burrito, aka 2 meals, for 14$) Their birria stuff goes turbo hard, would recommend. Careful though, it's cash only, so come prepared.
It's one of the best tacos.. juicy and meaty... I would empty the orange sauce every single time. And the food truck next street is open till 3am.. Best place to get a midnight snack.
Great food experience with great music and video ambiance. The food portion is generous, and mix flavors submerged your palad in a Fiesta where Mexican food and fusion dishes make you happy. Clean environment and service are excellent. The only downside is the parking (popular place), but it is enough with street parking, anyway it is good to walk after having a great meal.
This place gets a well-deserved 5-star review for their exceptional service and mouthwatering cuisine. From the moment I stepped in, the staff displayed genuine warmth and professionalism, always checking in on me and my group and making the dining experience truly enjoyable. The menu offered a delectable array of Mexican dishes that catered to various tastes, and each bite was a burst of flavor. The downside, if any, is that they only accept cash, but the incredible service and scrumptious food more than make up for it. I highly recommend Cali Spartan to anyone seeking a delightful local experience that exceeds expectations.
I Love it here just for the simple fact that they make actual Mexican Hot Chocolate and not some machine or powder mixed with water. I also only come for the papa fritas and a carne asada taco so they are the only items I will say that have never dissapointed. The place is super cute and offers a unique seating area that only the person/persons eating can make a decision on. They also have food trucks associated with them as being the "SJ's Famous Crispy Taco Spot" and both the line on the corner for the truck and the line in this place can meet on a good night🙌🏾 THIS IS A MUST STOP for my sister like every other day/night😄
Cali Spartan Kitchen -- San Jose, CA. - Carne Asada Tacos (3 for $6) and $2.50 each/additional tacos - Cali Mimosa ($30) cali spartan is not only one of my fav spots around the area but a staple spot for a lot of sjsu students whether its a lunch time meal or late night snack - asada (steak) and pollo (chicken) tacos are usually my go to along with the orange sauce. this time around was also my first time getting (this large sized) mimosa here and it was so much fun drinking it with friends. if yall are in the area then make sure to stop by and try these two items on the menu!! tip: unisex bathroom available, indoor and outdoor dining available and most importantly-- CASH ONLY!! parking lot and street parking is available 🚗
Great food, indoor/outdoor seating. Large salsa/topping bar to choose from for your meal.
Food is fresh and delicious. Customer service goes above and beyond. Personally helped us navigate through parking after our car was blocked in and spent over 10 minutes with us.
I had little crispy tacos with tripe and lengua, the service was attentive and quick too. My go-to late night place
Food is great, the ladies are awesome, and the drinks are super sized. Thank you for your hospitality. I will request management to inform the guests before seating that this is a cash only establishment. I understand there is an atm, I would prefer to avoid the atm fees and put it towards the service tip. Second, for the price you are charging for tequila, kindly get better tequila than Patron. Furthermore, management should look into modernizing their POS (Point of Sales) system or a way to take payments via cards. I agree, walking into this establishment is like stepping back in time to enjoy the laid back culture and drinks. I can see why they still take cash… keep up the great food and service. Thank you. Please get better tequila, real tequila and mezcal.
Wow wow wow. Great food, awesome service, and nice lively vibes. Got the birria torta and was not disappointed. If you're a messy eater like me, I would reccomend that you ask them to put the torta on a bigger plate. Lots of college kids go here, for good reason. Parking can be pretty rough on a busy day. Lots of vege options.
If you live in SJ + haven't been here wyd!!! Dipping the quesabirrias into the flavorful consommé (broth) + eating was an ✨experience✨that I recommend to everyone. The portion for one order (3 for $10) of the quesabirrias was perfect for me. Their other tacos + orange sauce are solid as well, and their menu is pretty extensive with the food/drink options. Parking can get tough during peak hours with the tight lot.
Cali Spartan Mexican Kitchen is a must-try for taco lovers, especially for their **birria tacos**—juicy, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. But if you're after something with a bit more crunch, their **large crispy super tacos** will not disappoint, offering a hearty and satisfying bite. The true star of the show, however, is their **orange sauce**. In my opinion, it's hands down the best orange sauce in town, even better than La Vic's! It's creamier, with just the right amount of kick that sets it apart. If you’re a fan of spice and bold flavor, this orange sauce is a game-changer. This place delivers on flavor, making it my new go-to spots for authentic Mexican food in San Jose!
Wish i had an option of giving more stars to this place!!the first time I was here had no idea it was cash only ,but they have an atm machine inside the restaurant!(convenient eh?!!?)🤪 but I had to pass cz I had only credit cards, hoping to be back soon which I did last night and don't regret the decision at all!!😋 Was here with a group of 4 for dinner and were soooo happy with everything the place offers! Starting with the menu,it is so vast and detailed so many options that you'd probably need a lot of time to decide on what you want!🙊 Food: we ordered the Cali tacos, little crispy tacos, cheesy fries, Veggie burrito, mango lime aide (must try you guys!!) ,strawberry coffee horchata. everything was super delicious but my favorite was the little crispy tacos.cooked to perfection ,I requested for vegetarian ones with zucchini on top with beans, they got me the "crispiest" tacos I've had in California.it was so good that I ordered 3 more for myself!! Like to add that the food is not heavy!🤡🤑 No meal is complete without dessert so we ordered friend plantain with condensed cream again super delish!! 👻 Tip: don't wait for taco Tuesdays go check the place out now!!!😻👍👍
OMGeeeee!!! Hidden gem. We've experienced local and far away restaurants, BUT this place is HOTT! Their shrimp michelada was on point. By far, one of the best in San Jose. We have our #1 local spot for shrimp micheladas, but this is now going to be our to go to spot. The Cali asada fries were crips, tasty, and flavorful. We also tried the quesabirria tacos and the consome. Their portions were generous. The consome was full of flavor, not salty but near perfect. And the asada Tostadas were really great too, not too dry or burnt. Really fun ambience. We will definitely be coming back.
Stumbled upon this place near SJSU campus. No tequila, but the Michelada was good. Cali-taco-Birria meal was fantastic!! Oh and their salsa are tye bomb too!!
Go to spot for tacos in San Jose. Great Al Pastor, lots of taco options. Super Tacos with the soft tortillas are delicious. Big portions on appetizers, so measure mains accordingly. 3 tacos more than enough for most folks, reduce if getting chips or nachos. Chips provided with salsa or guac is seasoned beautifully and addicting. Don’t forget to grab an orange and green salsa from the condiments bar to pair with chips or to drizzle on tacos/nachos. Pickled onions go great on the tacos as well. For drinks, highly recommend the horchatas - mix and match flavors as well if you’re feeling fun. Also have seen insanely large shareable cocktails often popular with the college crowd from SJSU. Space quite lively with indoor and outdoor seating. Expect place to busy most nights and filled with folks in their teens or early 20s.
Cali Spartan Restaurant 🌮✨ I’ve been a regular at their taco truck for many nights, but their restaurant takes the experience to another level. 📺🍽️ With TVs everywhere and a wider menu selection, the restaurant offers more than just top-tier tacos—it’s worth exploring the whole menu to see what else they have to offer. I absolutely love how they make their al pastor, but you can never go wrong with the carne asada either. 🔥🍖 I decided to create my own taco flight with al pastor three ways: the regular small taco, the big crispy taco, and the Cali big crispy taco. Their crispy tacos are a standout here. 🌮🧀 They take their classic tacos and serve them on a tostada shell, loaded with cheese, salsa, and avocado. 🥑 The Cali big crispy taco goes a step further, topping it all with crispy French fries—seriously, their fries are so crispy. 🍟✨ The combination of the juicy al pastor, the crunchy shell, the fresh salsa and avocado, and their signature orange sauce creates an explosion of flavor and texture that’s simply unforgettable. 💥🌶️ My son ordered the birria tacos, and he absolutely loved them. 🫶🥩 The meat was incredibly tender, and the consomé was rich, coating each bite with bold, savory flavor. He savored bite. 🍲👌 I’d definitely recommend Cali Spartan for a fantastic Tex-Mex experience with friends and family. 👫👨👩👧👦 Just a heads-up: it’s cash-only, so come prepared or use their ATM (there’s a small fee). 💵🏧
If you find it hard to get a large super burrito for only $11 at a sit-down restaurant, you can come here. The meat quality is excellent, I especially love the crispiness of the cabeza. They have fun options on their menu and cute goblet drinks with gummies. They have a sign in the front that says you will have to pay $55 if you break a glass. But I haven't gotten buzzed off their Micheladas so I don't anticipate it being too much of a risk. Btw, they got new menus recently and the laminated heavy menus covered in gunk are gone. No one does fried tortilla shells like they do, huaraches, sopes, and crispy tacos are all on point!!! They have 4 forms of birria: tacos, birria torta, birria burrito, and quesabirria. I like the consome that comes with them. The super quesadilla and super crispy tacos are my go-tos. They have a nice condiments and sauce bar. The place is cash only and they have an ATM. Vibe is good. There is indoor and outdoor seating. They have TVs that play soccer games and Jeopardy. The employees are really hard-working, and for the most part, very nice. There is one unisex bathroom which is (strangely) clean considering I sometimes see multiple people come out of it on some ratchet nights. There is a dedicated parking lot here which is so convenient as everywhere else is mostly metered parking in downtown.
I may be biased but I'm automatically giving them 5-stars for their Taylor Swift playlist. It's nonstop Taylor mix for 10 minutes then switches to a Mexican playlist and back. Finding parking here still gives me nightmares. I went on a weekend and the parking is still horrible. It's next to SJSU so the nimbys here restrict all the parking. Normal people can't come to Cali-spartan. Only students and locals. The parking lot is also a mess. People just park anywhere, double park, and block people in. I really dont understand how the system here works. It's really just a free for all. The crispy tacos though are so amazing. It's all the fatty goodness you want to heal your soul. I want to come back so bad but the parking gives me shivers.
Authentic Mexican food ! Did you a while to come out... And I understand why... That's because they cook it as it's order so u get it really fresh cooked! We sat in outdoor area and it's covered so it's not all exposed More open, more light, more room!! Service is good and friendly!
you have to try this place!!! this is my go-to with friends. i highly recommend trying their crispy tacos and cabeza for the meat. the atmosphere is amazing and the workers are all nice and friendly. once it gets busy sometimes the wait takes a while. it’s cash only but there’s an atm inside.
Absolutely A+ for the food! Mixed fajitas is a must have, the fancy appetizer platters (all of them) are truly fancy with non-beatable taste! Has its own parking lot but look out for lunch/dinner times ‘cause it can get really crowded and full-packed. Cash only. And it really helps if you can speak español ;)
TLDR: Good food at a good price with a couple of caveats to the experience. Parking is challenging. Get the al pastor and crispy tacos. For my fellow social anxiety introverts: Cash ONLY Yes, you CAN bring that salsa bottle back to your table Flag down to get bill Pay at the front Tip goes in the jar Good tacos and crispy tacos. We got al pastor, carne asada, and pollo to sample various types and I'm not personally much of an al pastor enjoyer normally, but the al pastor here was quite good and I'd rank it as some of the best I've had. I usually find fairly middle of the road pollo at taquerias and yeah, that's still true here. Carne asada is usually my go-to, but I didn't particularly care for it as much as some of my favorites. The salsa was quite good, though the orange salsa was bizarre, and I did not care for it. It was like a smokey chipotle aioli kind of thing. I stuck to the red and was happy with it and it was nice they had bottles you could bring to the table for a little bit and then bring back. I was a little disappointed that there were no chips at the salsa bar, especially since the crispy tacos really made me crave some chips to scoop up the taco remnants with because the crispy taco flavor by itself was wonderful. As you might expect, parking is challenging, and we had to park quite a ways away and hoof it since the lot was full. It was a packed house with a 30 minute wait for our food after ordering, which makes sense for a Friday night, but classes weren't in session, so I was hoping it wouldn't be so long. This is also a cash only business and maybe it was just me, but the way they did tipping I found confusing since I calculated the tip in my head and then gave them cash that accounted for both the bill and tip, but they gave me back the tip amount and I put it in the jar. A completely fine system, just a bit unexpected, and something I feel like people like me with social anxiety should know going in.
The tacos are great, both soft and crispy. The price recently goes up due to rent. I still go back here for tacos. The staff are super friendly!
My good friend was in town and said we must go to this restaurant and I can see why. True traditional Mexican food that was fantastic!
Great spot for Mexican food, one of the best options in the area. My personal favourite item is the chorizo burrito bowl but their other items are very fresh, flavourful, and delicious. Prices are standard and the portions are just right. Service is quick and friendly as well. Definitely worth checking out.
The food was tasty and I especially loved the sauces although some were a bit salty but the experience was really good and we had a nice time. Overall a solid spot for tacos and the staff was really nice too
Recommended by a friend, decided to try out Cali Spartan for their crispy tacos! We ordered 3 large crispy tacos, 3 super soft tacos, and 1 order of birria tacos. Crispy tacos were definitely great! Soft tacos and birria tacos were ok. Drinks were not too great. Ended up finding bones in the tacos halfway through. When I went up to pay, I mentioned it to the staff, but they didn't really seem to understand me. Also, I believe they are cash only. They have indoor and outdoor seating which is nice. Overall, not a bad spot. Definitely try the crispy tacos! Parking can be a bit tight, but they do have a designated lot. Follow the adventure @shoyuthebest on IG!
Good service & friendly. Decent food for the price. Had the happy hour specials tacos asada, alpastor & carnitas. Along with the seafood plate.
For their side station, the radishes were good. I don't like how they cut their cilantro, but it's alright. The mango salsa is nothing to ride home about. Their shrimp tacos are great value, would recommend. In general, their tacos are great value. I had their burrito as well and it was well-stuffed but I didn't like flavor of the stuffing too much. I guess don't get their chicken. Their carnitas and al pastor were on point, however. For the hot sauces the red one is like 1/5th of a seeded jalapeno. The green is like 1/16th of a seedless jalapeno. The orange is a chipotle ranch that's like 1/8th of a seedless jalapeno.
The items were noting is the birria and the crispy tacos. If you order the torta birria, the bread will soak up more of the consume. Inside and outside (covered with propane heaters) dining. We were a large group ~30. Marcos and his team were able to accommodate. Thought we would slam the kitchen but food came out relatively quick
food was great! we got the super soft tacos and the nachos. both were sooo good. i wasn’t the biggest fan of the marinade for the pastor since i’ve had better (it’s more on the salty side), but it was still tasty. the super soft tacos do NOT lie—they are literally super soft. probably the messiest i’ve ever looked eating tacos but i’m not complaining, it was worth it. the nachos were bomb too. you can’t really go wrong with nachos, but i especially loved how the chips stayed crispy even under all the toppings. overall, super solid spot. definitely coming back!
Food was really good for the price. You get huge sized burritos with meats of your liking. However, the service was rather slow and I had to request for a server to come take our orders after 10 minutes of waiting. But it could just be a bad time of coming where they transition from lunch to dinner. Overall it was a good experience.
This is the cash only. Family style Mexican restaurant. The staff mostly speaks Spanish so you'll need to communicate slowly with them. We got the birria tacos, Bean Taco, and asada on soft shell tacos. We also got the nachos. We really enjoyed all the tacos, however, the nacho toppings weren't well distributed and had a lot of mushrooms. There's a self-serve station for water, salsas, and fajita vegetables. Our food came very quickly and was freshly made. There's also a patio outside if you want to eat out there. There is one washroom.
The food? Genuinely delicious — Cali Spartan Mexican Kitchen knows how to treat your taste buds right. The burritos are hefty, the seasoning is on point, and the location couldn’t be more perfect for SJSU students looking to escape dining hall mystery meat. But here’s the catch (and it’s a funny one if it weren’t so real): You walk in, get hit with those amazing smells… and then realize your debit card is just a fancy piece of plastic here. Cash or Venmo only. And if you're short on bills? No worries — there’s an ATM right in the middle of the restaurant, like a hungry troll guarding the burrito treasure. As a broke college student, I can't help but chuckle at the business model. It's a brilliant (and barely IRS-trackable) setup that feels like modern-day piracy with guac on the side. Pay up, kids — and don’t forget to tip… in cash. Great food, but I do wish growing businesses that clearly have the foot traffic and community love would make it easier — and more above-board — to pay for it.
Place is alright. Okay even. I ordered tacos (6.8/10) and person with me ordered quesabirria. The quesabirria was a really good 4.5/10. Had this taste that was weird but not flavorless like too much of a spice & my guess is clove. Not recommended here cause they don’t know how to do it. The reviews fail to tell you this place is cash only. So we had problems with payment and had to download Venmo. Service was um fair. I think a lot ppl who don’t know what’s good when it come to mx food come here and that’s fine cause it’s an okay place. I’m walking out this b as I post this
Food was great, but the service and ambiance were lacking if your coming for a family dining experience. Perfect for college students though
We have been so excited to try this spot! We started with a margarita and tequila strawberry lemonade. The marg was very sweet and tasted like sour mix, and the lemonade drink was very weak. We ordered a quesadilla and the nachos for dinner. The quesadilla was AMAZING. The nachos which are normally my favorite thing to order out, were dry and disappointing. Unfortunately the service wasn't great either. The waitress was unable to answer our questions and the two entrees were brought to the table about 5 minutes apart. We will definitely go and give it another try. I will skip the drinks next time. Every other table got horchata, maybe that's the correct choice! We also heard the tacos were great. Not our best experience, but willing to give it another chance.
Food: the food are well made, and I really recommend the soft tacos with your own choices of toppings. Would not recommend the cow tongue as the diced meat are not that tasty, but the shrimp is very worth a try! The house salsa is not as spicy as we expected. Service: the restaurant is very popular, extremely. When we arrived, we waited for a while till we are finally arranged with a table. When we asked for water for a table, it also didn't come until we almost finish the dishes, and in the middle when we asked, they told us water is self-service... Ambience: street side atmosphere fits the vibe and suitable for friends or colleagues gathering.
Used to love coming here for their mango salsa and orange sauce. The last time I came they ended up overcharging my table but I didn't realize it until I left (I paid at the register and they just gave me a price with no receipt before or after). Their tacos are good but after being overcharged I haven't been back. I just go to tacos chencho food truck now.
First of all, they do take credit card, contrary to what AI and other reviews say. (Also, Cali Spartan Mexican Kitchen has not been open since the year 205, AI.) Now that that's out of the way, we came here last minute without checking reviews because Antojitos was closed for repairs or construction or something. There was a language barrier that caused some misunderstandings and hiccups during ordering, but to their credit they fixed some (but not all) of the resulting issues. I saw them seat one couple at closing time, so that is another plus for them. The downsides: The food was only okay. The lengua was too chewy and the cabeza was too burnt. The tripa and al pastor were decent but not amazing. The spicy pickles and sauces, even their spiciest sauce, were not very spicy, other than the pickled jalapeño. Also the pickles were softer than preferred, though YMMV. They're expensive. 2 dishes and 2 sides with tax and tip came out to almost 60 bucks. I realize they're a brick and mortar but the same exact order at Antojitos is less than half that, with tax and tip (I also tip 20% at food trucks, so that's not why it was so much more expensive here). Parking is tight and street parking is difficult as well. The music was too loud. I'm a musician and the last thing I want is to go deaf. They're only open until 10.
I got two super soft tacos and the tacos were substantially sized and filling. I thought the shrimp tasted weird (too puffy and felt like they had been put in some kind of solution), but the tilapia was tender and not chalky. I didn’t add salsa or sauce because there was already a lot of sour cream on top and texturally that would’ve been overstimulating. The flavor was lacking without sauce, though, so I wish the sour cream was also self-serve. They have a parking lot, but it can fill up very quickly!
3 big complaints 1. Slow service 2. Ton of salad in my burrito (nothing against salad but it was just filler and instead of more meat, rice, guac, cream, cheese, etc) 3. Doesn't give back correct change. It's only 2 cents but as a business everything should be done to the T. Cheating is cheating. Or change the to reflect the total amount without pennies.
ATTENTION BUSINESS OWNER: Your cooks and dishwashers are hanging out in the parking lot 11pm, 12am and 1am in the morning /night using the white car seen in the photo here blasting their music extremely loud that the Bass is echoing against all the walls of all the neighboring apartments keeping all the people of the neighborhood and their KIDS awake. These families need to get sleep for work and school the next morning . If you don’t take action IMMEDIATELY I’ll go and take this up with the City of San Jose.
I’ve been a customer since they first opened the food truck. The one thing that made them stand out from all the other taco spots were their open salsa bar, their crispy tacos, and the fact that they’re open late. Back then, the lines would be long but nobody mind waiting since they knew the food was good and the service was even better. I can’t say the same now. The service has really gone downhill since then. Every time I come, it seems like nobody is happy to be working here. They make me feel annoying as soon as I ask for anything extra (lime, orange sauce, mango salsa.) I wouldn’t have to ask if they just included it in my to-go order.. This is the third time I’ve come and they said they’re out of mango salsa. I’m not sure if they’re trying to cut costs or if they don’t serve it anymore but every time I’ve come, they tell me they’re out. I’ve truly started to hate coming here because the staff truly make me feel like a bother when I ask for simple stuff like condiments.
Visited here during the weekend and waited for an HOUR to get our meal, we sit at 1pm and literally got our food at 2pm. The waiter didn’t tell us about such a long waiting time, the food is good but service and waiting are really bad. The parking is difficult too although they have a parking lot behind store but it’s usually full
I really hate to leave bad reviews, but this place left such a sour taste in my mouth. I used to always go to their taco truck during my college days and I've eaten at this restaurant a few times before and I've always had great experiences. But what I got for our catering order was really disappointing. I called two days in advance to place an order for 50 tacos (25 chicken and 25 asada). When I got there, they couldn't find my order and then when they finally found the receipt for it, they had not made it yet so I had to wait 30 minutes for it to be made even though they told me it would only take 10 more minutes. I was bringing this food to a baby shower and it made me late for the baby shower, which is very embarrassing to show up late with all of the food when guests are already there. The girl working the register was apologetic and nice but it didn't change much. The tacos we received were extremely small with burnt chicken and not much flavor. Even adding the sauce didn't really make it much better. I'm not sure what happened, but the quality used to be so much better and it did not feel right to pay the amount of money that I did for such small tacos. I might try them again in the future, but for right now, this really put a damper on our day and left us very underwhelmed.
*1 YR REVIEW* - over 10 visits to the restaurant (both locations) Service is terrible, there are plenty of restaurants that don't serve side eye and uncomfortable tones with their subpar food. They never include silverware despite asking multiple times in Spanish and English - this time there was no beans for a $25 plate of food and served with minimal sauce that the dish calls for (no one asked if they could substitute for fries, which I'm allergic to) Go elsewhere for more authentic food and WAY better service
The food was very underwhelming. Even if all the other places are closed don't go here. The server Erika was very rude. She rushed us to order our food so she could go on break. She then went and sat in the table right next to us and began her before break we even had drinks. Also, they are cash and Venmo only, which they will tell you after you eat. Wont be returning.
June 21, 2025 9:45pm ordered Tacos Al Pastor (my favorite) they tasted great & hit the spot. For the next 8 hours my insides were not okay & I had to keep running to the bathroom & I had waves of nausea & felt feverish. By 6am my stomach rejected the tacos. Now I’m afraid to eat there & it was one of my favorite places to go :(
Food was embarrassingly bland. I ordered a chicken burrito and my friend ordered the tacos. Her tacos were dry and the chicken in my burrito was completely unseasoned and tasteless. The only thing that was good was the strawberry horchata but I won't recommend that either cause I had horrible stomach upset all night and I have no idea whether it was the horchata or the burrito that caused it.
