When I've gone it wasn't too busy I'm sure they get busy because the food's good. The staff is extremely friendly and very accommodating. The food is great it's called the Hungry Hound for a reason you go in hungry you leave very satisfied.
Family-owned place, been around for ever!! Don't blink or you'll miss it it's literally a hole in the wall but it's awesome inside. Really friendly staff the owner serve me actually. Excellent pastrami, fantastic hot dogs, top sirloin burgers. What's also great is the prices. Very reasonable almost cheap! for instance bacon dog is $6.95 similar to Five Guys!! The hot dog is only $3.95. Give it a try.. I will be back.
No bathrooms. I had grilled chicken sandwich. It's so big two ppl can share. Very delicious
I love it fast, fresh, and tasty and this place definitely hits the spot, Found exactly what I was looking for.
We've been coming to the Hungry Hound since the kids were in grade school. It's been a staple in Santa Clara University area for a very long time. Menu is quite extended as family run eateries are. Something for everyone. I always get the Pastrami sandwich and it never disappoints. Very consistent, quality food. The owners are great people and provide excellent service with a smile and some neighborhood conversation. Only four stars on the atmosphere because the place has been there a long time and the decor shows that. Not saying there's anything wrong with that, you are going to eat there because the good food at a good value, not because of the pictures on the wall.
Real American food !!! Forget In and Out ! Fresh hot delicious. Beefy hamburger . Chili so good ! Owners kind and amazing .
A true family ran small business! Good is great with lots of options to choose from! I prefer the steak sandwich or Italian sausage sandwich, crinkle fries and onion rings!! Oh and don’t forget about the banana shake!! They are so nice and truly care about their customers!!
Popular with the locals. Nice family business with plenty of options on the menu. Decent size dining room. They also have a few tables outside. They'll cook your food how you want it. The hot pastrami sandwich is a beast! You can't go wrong here, and you won't leave hungry! Cash and credit cards accepted.
Been coming here since grad school in the early 2000s. Still good food after all these years. The nice owners work so hard to make delicious food. Too bad they no longer serve beer. Owner says SCU students got too rowdy with alcohol and causing trouble, so it’s not worth it to serve alcohol anymore. Thank the kids for ruining it for everyone.
I love this place! Large diverse menu. Good prices and HUGE portions. The staff are also so nice. Gyro was massive and the Italian sausage pepper&onion sandwich was killer!
🌭🐕 This is such a fun place to eat at. I had a really nice time with my friends. The people who run the restaurant are really sweet and the value is good you get a lot of food. Honestly, the food is just ok. Nothing we had was cooked particularly well. The restaurant is a bit rundown and didn’t have air conditioning either. But you go to a restaurant for more than just the quality of the meal. What can I say- We were hungry hounds.
Heard about this sandwich place before ,heard it was good but the food is not just good is amazing got a pastrami sandwich by far the best
I’ve been coming here since 2005 for the grilled chicken sandwich - it’s probably the tastiest chicken sandwich around and it’s been made consistently well all these years. The chicken is always well-marinated, well-seasoned, grilled to a golden sear on a soft baguette - the mayonnaise and pickles here are also really delicious. The grilled cheese is very tasty too, and if you like thick milkshakes, you’ll love Hungry Hound.
I've been going here for just under 20 years, and I love it. Consistent good menu, great burgers, big portions, and the staff is the best part. Friendly and helpful, it's an all around amazing spot. This place fed me through college, and continued to feed my now crew of kids. Every time I come back to Santa Clara it is a must stop visit. Highly recommend their burger special of the day.
1¹ This place is awesome! I ordered a steak sandwich I got one of the best sandwhiches ive had in a long while, and it came out in a couple minutes, fresh and tasty.. The lady behind the counter is very nice and friendly. Good spot for a great lunch.
i love Hungry Hound. I live nearby and i always enjoy their cheeseburger with fries on the side. the lady who is the owner is nice. she is very polite and always gives good service.
Had their 3/4th lb burger, philly cheese steak sandwich, fried chicken sandwich and ribeye steak sandwich from my multiple visits there. Absolutely loved the burger, it’s served on a baguette instead of a traditional bun, loved this substitute. The ribeye steak sandwich was spot on too, special mention to their fries. Two things that are distinctive of this place is Food, great taste accompanied with a quantity that will leave you a ton of leftovers, while maintaining a reasonable price. Second is the smile with which the lady serves, it would definitely brighten your day. Will be back to try all their menu. Love it.
Homemade style burger with fries, chocolate chip cookie and a drink for under 20 bucks is a good deal. Everything was fresh and tasty. I'll be back to try more menu items. This place has real home style food and the owners were very nice. Recommended.
The true last hope for mankind! They won’t gouge your pockets or wallets, instead they save you money. You get what you paid for and more! Large portions give you two meals in one! Togos, Jersey Mikes, Subway, and Ike’s have no competition with this eatery! At Hungry Hound they don’t skimp on the meat like all those other places. Here they pack all flavor and is good quality, especially when compared to the places I mentioned as well as better than Dairy Queen. The service was great. They are super friendly and kind people. They definitely work hard and quickly too. Oh Hungry Hound why can’t you have more locations? They also have a selection of ice cream/popsicles. Yum! Till we meet again! Thanks Hungry Hound you are the best and I hope you last forever in this changing world.
From the time you walk in you can smell the small town scent. The place is decorated with beautiful wooden tables and benches, like what you would find at a country cookout. The lady who took my order was pleasant, and I asked for a suggestion and she told me the burger, so I took it. The price was ok, being from Texas it was a bit expensive but I understand why. In total it was 17.95 for a burger, fries and drink. It was only about a five minute wait, but I was shocked at the portion that I was given. It was big, and I can tell you that I had to sit for about 10 minutes after I had finished eating because I was so full. The burger was juicy, and wasn't greasy at all. The vegetables were fresh and crunchy like they had just been picked. The bread was soft and held up to the juices of the burger without falling apart. The fries were thick, crunchy on the outside, but soft and warm on the inside. With all this together, it reminded me of home (Texas). Even though I am only here for 4 weeks for work, I will be stopping by again to try their chili dog.
I had an avocado burger. Topped with cheese. It's hearty and tastes great with butter mayonnaise! The meat is juicy, but with lots of veggies so it doesn't bleed into the bun. Best burger ever! I would take my husband this time
For those who love an old skool hot pastrami sandwich, this is your place! Juicy pastrami and fresh bread with all the fixings! Many great reviews and it did not disappoint! I recommend washing things down with a lovely real banana milkshake. A new favorite and I’ll definitely be back!
Affordable, unpretentious lunch fare, a stone's throw from Santa Clara University. Portion sizes are big so come ready to eat. I enjoyed a coffee and a hot pastrami sandwich.
Old school hidden gem burger place with giant burgers and amazing staff. I couldn’t eat the other half of my cheese burger lol. Thanks guys you are awesome!
Great food and great service. Good for large groups as well as a solo quick bite to eat. Started a new diet with some restrictions and they were very accommodating.
Hungry Hound is amazing. Great burgers, cheese steaks, sausages.. It's also vegetarian friendly. They've got veggie burgers as well. You can also ask for a breakfast sandwich, they're extremely good. The bread is fresh, the ingredients are cooked perfectly, the sandwiches are constructed well.. everything here is high quality and delicious. They've got a bunch of sides as well: chips, french fries, tater tots, potato salad.. Worth every penny. Go by and check them out, you won't be disappointed. Support local businesses !

This is a GREAT neighborhood joint with no frills -- just good food. Nothing fancy but very tasty. My club san was superb and it could easily have fed two adults. Just the sort of place that a college town needs. I will be back. Glad I live nearby.
Amy and Mark take amazing, generous care of their diners! We’ve been eating here every week for more than 20 years. Hearty portions. Fresh ingredients. And the best homemade cookies! Support local businesses!
My 2 favorite burger joints are The Hungry Hound and The Happy Hound. Both are very similar in many ways with a few differences. Both also have very diverse menus but both are completely unrelated. This is a Hungry Hound rating. The old boy in the back makes his burgers out of fresh hamburger. He showed me the mix no pie made frozen patties. I got a bacon cheeseburger no onions. That's how it came as I ordered it. Only thing missing was pickle. Not sure if that's an extra charge add-on or just not offered. They however were quite generous with the lettuce and tomato. I did need to add my own ketchup and mustard but they have it right there. Would love to see more variety like mayonnaise, bbq and hot sauce. They do charge a whole extra dollar for certain sauces that most places don't charge at all for so that's a major down score on points but the quality of their bacon and cheese and the burger meat itself adds major points. The burger was amazing and this may be my new favorite burger spot. No customer restrooms is also another major downfall which not enough can be said about that. Overall, still a quality place to eat and worthy of my 5 star rating. Prices also for the basics are favorable for the type of establishment and within range of similar places. Maybe even on the lower end. They have varying daily specials that looks very attractive as well for a reasonable price. I'm craving going back there right now even though I just left. They also have outdoor seating where you can sit and eat with a pet.
This place is excellent I’ve lived here for three years and just found out about it. Best lunch in town the owners are awesome. Huge portions. If you like good food at an even better price do yourself a favor and go to the hound!

I looked for about a year for a go-to lunch place for sandwiches in Santa Clara, until I found Hungry Hound. Hungry Hound is an unpretentious simple restaurant with good solid sandwiches at a lower price than the alternatives. The turkey avocado is great and there's plenty of items on the menu to keep coming back to try. There's nothing very fancy about the place, but it solidly delivers for a satisfying lunch and the woman who works the counter everyday is nice.
This place had good food. I ordered the hotdog with bacon and cheese and it was very good. Wife had the chicken sandwich which she said was very tasty (it looked tasty too!). Fries and onion rings were hot and crispy. Prices were reasonable. My only complaint would be there was only one employee/owner there at the time. So not only did they ring us up but they cooked and helped other customers which slowed down the service. And the employee seemed unfriendly. Barely a smile and didnt greet us. To me customer service is important so I'm not giving 5 stars due to that. I would go back, but just for the food, not for friendliness or atmosphere.
Visited diner for the first time on Friday at lunch. We didn't have to wait and there were plenty of tables. Very basic place. Order at the counter, pick up food when ready, and clean up yourself. This is definitely a no frills place prioritizing value and quality over atmosphere, so prices are quite reasonable for the size and quality you get. The pastrami sandwich was very big, and the pastrami was soft and flavorful. The cheeseburger was fresh, and the onion rings were fried perfectly. I always appreciate a place that gives me bottles of ketchup and mustard for my burgers. There's no soda fountain, so all the drinks were bottles or cans. You pay a small fee for using credit/debit card, and there's even a $.35 charge for to-go boxes. Since it's in a small strip mall by Santa Clara Univ., there were plenty of parking. Overall it was a good meal at a value price, and that is getting very hard to find these days.
Hungry Hound: the cure to hangry. I was really super hungry after waiting for a service person to finish up their job at our home. I was in the mood for sandwiches and Hungry Hound was super close by and matched what I wanted. When I got there and saw the menu, my craving for a burger promptly pummeled my craving for a sandwich. We definitely over ordered during our visit, but I also could have done worse. 🤣 (I was eyeing the cheese dog in addition to everything... Good thing I didn't.) What we got: - avocado burger - cheeseburger - small fries (omg the portion is huge) - onion rings - chocolate milkshake In my experience, it's always the most unassuming places with the best milkshakes. Hungry Hounds was just the right thickness and texture, with a great chocolate ice cream flavor. The onion rings are a hard pass. To be honest, I don't think I've had a good onion rings anywhere in decades. The batter overpowered the onion. The fries were great. Hot, crispy on the outside, and soft on the inside. Just the way they should be! The portion was super generous and I'm really glad I didn't get a large. My eyes were definitely larger than my stomach for this meal. The cheeseburger was super standard with all the fixings: lettuce, tomato, onion, mayo. It was delicious and totally hit the spot. I didn't have the avocado burger, but I could see they gave some generous slices of it! I'll definitely be back to try their sandwiches and hot dogs next time!
Many years ago, I used to eat here like once a week because it was right next to a laundromat. After about 7 years, on Thursday, I went in to the Hungry Hound and although the counter was slightly different, the food and management we're still the same and they even remember myself, as well as my mom and even asked about my sister who was not even there. The was delicious, hot and freshly cooked. The cheeseburger was perfectly cooked ( I asked for well) and the linguisa sandwich had so much cheese... yum. Oh and the onion rings were crispy and crunchy and NOT oily. The food portion was nice and big for the price too. The bread on the hotdog, as well as on the rest of the food was very fresh tasting and grilled to perfection. They also have various cookies that were fresh and way bigger than other "burger" places. Needless to say, I will definitely be back and I would recommend The Hungry Hound to everyone. We had already eaten some of the food, so the pictures don't do justice to them, but the experience, the food and overall freshness is well worth trying out!

I normally go there because they're hamburgers are not greasy, but for some reason this time was different.
Hungry Hound is a small, casual diner. There are seven wooden tables with wooden benches indoors and a few tables in front. Only one indoor table has chairs with back support, so if a customer has back problems, then avoid this place or eat in front if weather permits. The place had a friendly feeling to it. The one think that bothered me is that it was hot indoors. So either Hungry Hound has no air-conditioning, or they keep the temperature turned down too low. I think outdoor the temperature was mid-80s (F). I ordered a hot dog and French fries, which were OK, nothing special. But the Hungry Hound had a special – shakes (several flavors) on sale so I ordered a Strawberry shake and it was excellent. Yum. I have not had one in about 10 year and this one got me to thinking maybe I will buy another one this summer. From what I could tell, the only parking available was on the street (no meters). Perhaps there is parking in back, but I do not know. The customer orders food at the cashier’s and she calls your number to pick up the food. From what I could assess, I suspect that the customer should buss their own food by retuning plates etc. to the front counter or into a waste container.
I ordered a Swiss onion cheeseburger with onion rings. The onion rings were nice and crispy, but the burger was very bland. I was expecting caramelized onions, but it was quick grilled onions. The cheese was also pretty bland and the burger tasted as if they forgot to salt the meat. Very nice staff and quick service.
Wanted a hot sandwich, not a fan of cold turkey and ham sandwiches and I feel like Ike’s although tasty keeps getting pricier and pricier so I decided to try this place out. Ordered the ribeye steak sandwich and it tastes so plain and bland. Would have been nice if they let me add some bbq sauce or ranch to counter the blandness but it’s $1 extra for sauces. Considering I already spent $35 on one sandwich with fries and a shake. They even charge for take out boxes and debit/credit cards. This sandwich tasted cheap and cold. I messed up by coming here.
I have given this place a few chances, as it is located in my area, and I wanted to support a smaller sandwich shop. The staff members can sometimes be friendly (there's a man who works here who kindly gifted me free additional food such as fries, cookies, etc.) but there is also a woman who seems to be quite cold towards me every time I go here. However, MOST importantly, every time I go to Hungry Hound, I have stomach issues for around two days, and pretty bad diarrhea. I gave them the benefit of the doubt the first time, however, now that it's happened two more times, I can't call it a coincidence anymore. As I am writing this, my stomach is growling, gut is churning, and I must go to the restroom and take care of this issue for the twelfth time today. I sadly won't be returning as I can't keep using my gut as a science experiment.
Gave this place one more chance after having two bad experiences in a row. Never again. Won't go into detail as to what I ordered because it really doesn't matter but it was a total monstrosity and I ended up wasting most of it because it was borderline inedible
