Opinions de Yanagi Sushi & Grill Santa Maria
Hilarious, fun, and enjoyable! Best Green Tea ice cream, best I've ever had! Sushi was amazing as well! Service was awesome! When I'm back in town I'll definitely come back!
I’m from Japan and this is the best Japanese restaurant I’ve had around this area. The new chef at the sushi bar learned how to make Japanese food in Japan for 3 years. Nigiri and rolls are perfect! Plus they are very friendly and nice. Everything I experienced there was amazing. I highly recommend this restaurant.
Delicious food and good service. Rolls are put together nicely with a great texture and decoration. If I’d have to point to something, couple tables are too close each other lacking of privacy, you can clearly hear what tables adjacent talk
Best sushi place in Santa Maria along with the best staff in my opinion. Always a good experience whether to go or to sit down. Great food. Awesome hostess's. Awesome waiting staff. Always money well spent. Every time our waiter/waitress was busy because the restaraunt was jammed up Jarvis/Javis came by to top up water and see if we needed anything. Thanks dude! I get the impression the staff are professionals and take pride in what they do. I seriously appreciate that
We were all 10 of us Family. Two of us had our Birthday celebration at Yanagi Sushi & Grill. Everyone totally enjoyed the show of the Chef, and the food was great!!! They also have steak, yum 😋 yum !!! Besides the sushi. If you enjoy good food... make an appointment and go just for the experience.
The food is by far the best Japanese I've ever had anywhere in the country. The price of their Merl's is not for the faint of heart but NEVER have less than excellent quality and flavor. I myself would rather pay more money for a wonderful meal than average meal for a cheap price.
Busy enough we couldn't do Teppan, but otherwise able to walk in no reservation. Food and drinks came quickly. Server very accurate and friendly considering it got busier as it got later, and she was one of two servers (and handling to go orders too!)
Yanagi Sushi and Grill surpassed my expectations with their incredible sushi and grill dishes. The fish was fresh, the rolls were creative, and the flavors were spot on. The staff provided friendly and attentive service, making the dining experience enjoyable. I highly recommend Yanagi for an outstanding sushi and amazing grill experience!
Hands down best service. Had the chicken gyoza and they were so light and crispy. Fried rice and tempura veggies so good. Best crunchy roll I've found in Santa Maria. Well done Yanagi.
the fried rice is so delicious! & their rolls are amazing too! the owner is very welcoming & everyone is super friendly! would definitely recommend going there! their tempura ice cream is so yummy!

I celebrate my birthday here every year and I never get disappointed, Service is great food is delicious
We came here for a birthday and got the royal treatment. The food was good, but the show and presentation at the grill was a hit with our party of 6. The toddlers in our group had a blast and ate all their food surprisingly, even the veggies! 😂👏 They accommodated our party well and we had a very nice time.
Celebrated a special occasion here recently. Really lovely service and outstanding food and drink. Wonderful unfiltered sake. Got the motorcycle, tarantula, dragon and salmon delight rolls. All excellent particularly moto and salmon delight. Really great experience all around. Super friendly staff! Thank you!!
SERVICE WAS VERY GOOD, FAST AND VERY FRIENDLY. The smell os old and burnt frying oil spreads all the way out to the dinning area. Very unpleasant.

The reason I didn't give it five stars is because the dinner grill show used to be much better. When I went it wasn't that great. It was okay but I've seen better shows there. With the money I'm spending I expect a good show.
My family and I visit at least twice a year and we always go to the grill side. The food and show is always great. The service on the other hand is not the greatest. Had to ask the server over and over for refills, chop sticks, soy sauce, and napkins. We were a little disappointed with that part this time.
I came here for the first time. Really good and really fancy. I enjoyed my time there. I ordered the Dynamite appetizer and a fire cracker roll. The price was reasonable. The waiters we're kinda awkward and i felt rushed
Loved eating at the tempan grill. The chef did an amazing job of not just cooking our food but putting on an amazing show. The food was delicious, and our sushi rolls were also amazing. the staff was incredibly friendly and even offered some helpful suggestions. If you haven't yet you need to eat here!
Excellent restaurant. Excellent food. Very clean and fresh fish, almost always. The reason I have given 4/5 is because when they get slammed - although they handle it as best they can - they will sometimes bring the wrong roll or take a hair longer than usual to get to your table. It doesn't always happen (in fact it's probably a good problem to have) but it's happened enough that I think it's note worthy. If you work in the service industry you understand this. If you DON'T, then I implore you to be patient and wait for the delicious food that will come your way. Other than that, I would NOT shy away from this place and highly recommend the teppan grill experience. Cheers!
Great food, Service is decent even if you want a refill or anything else I had to wave down our server a few times. If you want hibachi definitely make a reservation. We decided not to wait for it (1.5 hrs) for a hibachi table. Think there was like 4 birthday reservation when we ate there. Overall a small restaurant, I got the love boat $43 and feeds two, there meat was amazing from the fish, chicken, beef and short ribs I was a hug fan.
My grandsons favorite place, for his birthday tonight it was his choice. Everything was good, the steak was a bit over cooked for me but the fried rice and veggies were excellent. The miso soup too! We had a party of 9 and its very pricey but good for a special occasions. Food is good but the prices are just too high. We came again for another birthday. Loved Memen the cook but the bill was out of sight!!!
It's pricey but you pay for the experience if you go in to have the chef cook for you. If you want the chef all for just your party, you should go in a party of 8 to 10 if not they may fill in the empty chairs with other customers. Our party was 6 and they filled the other 4 chairs with another party of 4. The food is good, the show is good and the overall atmosphere is lively. No place is perfect when eating out and unfortunately my mother in law found a piece of scrubber wire in her fried rice thus the 4 stars. Whenever you eat out just know that accidents do happen. I let the waitress know and they brought fresh fried rice.
Really tasty rolls and pretty good service. Will definitely come back again. We had the Hot Night roll and the Dragon roll which were good. We got our daughter the kids boat which had a nice variety, but the chicken was chicken breast which my daughter doesn't like. It wasn't that dry for chicken breast, but because breast is already naturally dry it wasn't her favorite. We also had the chicken gyoza which were really good, even if the sauce served with it was on the salty side. Overall a good meal for a decent price for sushi in the Central coast.

Good food front row seat eating.. its real nice
Always had good experiences here but the last visit was a little different. I asked for no mushrooms and the server repeated the order. Seemed easy enough until the teppan grill chef came with the vegetables already mixed. I mentioned no mushrooms and was told the vegetables were already mixed so he couldn't fulfill my request. I picked the mushrooms out rather than going on about it... pretty strange to not be able to hold the mushrooms...
So my family invited me for my birthday, the food was delicious I have to say we all enjoyed the experience and the food. The reason I’m only giving three stars is because the food portions were scanty and we were all still hungry afterwards. Party of six = $300 so average about $50 a plate we should not still be hungry. A little bowl of rice and a very small portion of veggies with your steak or chicken (they cut up the steak so smaller portion) So for a birthday ok fun but eat before, have plenty in your wallet, and plan on going somewhere for dessert afterwards. Oh and go to the movies afterwards too cause you will have room for popcorn!
Pros: Hibachi Chef preformance was pretty good compared to others I've been to. Steak was delicious. Chicken was okay. A decent amount of meat and veggies with the meal. Staff was friendly to us. Cons: WAY overpriced! You have to choose between soup or salad (even though the menu says otherwise), you only get a small bowl of rice, and the dragon roll was pretty gross. Eel was mostly just skin, no meat. They are still understaffed. We went on a Monday night. Service was slow, we waited a long time for boxes and check, and never got drink refills. I feel bad for the waitresses they have a lot to handle.

Unfortunately can't comment on on the food. Walked into place it to go order, sit up there for literally 10 minutes waiting for someone to come take my order. Both waitresses and the sushi chef saw me standing there and no one came. But they were eager to take two call in orders. Left and went somewhere else
It's not a horrible place, not good for sure. Here is some bullet points. It was dinner for 3. 1.) Service was really weird. The server wasn't rude or anything but he was so quiet that it was awkward. All our food came out 10 minutes apart! 3 dishes 3 different times. My food was cold by the time the 3rd plate came out. 2.) I got my food first, I ordered the combo plate with spicy sesame chicken and chicken gyoza. The gyoza was awesome! The chicken it's self was REALLY GOOD! However, it came with clearly, soggy *frozen* veggies. A mix bag of carrots, peas and corn. They were gross and went horribly with an Asian dish. Seriously, really bad. 3. Friend had the Mountain Roll. His comments were that it doesn't taste fresh fish. Also it looked like a baked mess. He said he would never order that again. 4.) My husband got the Red Dragon Roll. He has order this before and loved it. This time however, this was not worth the wait. Also, the amount of chili oil that was used in the roll was outrageous! There were puddles of oil under each piece. He loves spicy food, but puddles of oil was horrible. 5.) Over all it was not a good dining experience. Probably won't be back.
As soon as we walked in we was seated which was wonderful on the other hand our table (near the back by the windows ) had ants everywhere. Moved tables began to order older Asian female host states that their is NO SHARING making us order double the food.. after moving tables still seemed to find some ants at our new table food is ok /over priced cook was amazing with interacting with the kids and giving a good show.
While the service was great and the people were very nice, I’m saddened to say that the food was honestly pretty bad. The fried rice was pretty good, but unfortunately, that is where the flavor ended. While cooking the vegetables, steak, and shrimp, absolutely nothing was used to flavor the food except butter. No soy sauce, no teriyaki sauce, no salt or pepper. Had to try and add soy sauce after the fact to make it anything close to edible. Very sad because with the people being so nice I would love to go back, but I can’t bring myself to pay that much for food that is not enjoyable to eat.

The food was flavorless Sadly. I got shrimp and chicken and my friend got the calamari and shrimp, both at the teppanyaki grill. This is my favorite type of restaurant and I was so disappointed when I saw the cheap menus, and they I still got extra fried rice (big mistake). The food is at least $10 more then other similar restaurant but made with cheaper ingredients. I am pretty sure they used frozen mixed veggies in the rice also not to mention that they barely put any butter or seasoning on anything. I asked for soy sauce to try and help my dry chicken and the flavorless rice but it didn't help. I didn't get the soup I got the salad and the dressing was good but I mostly just got the spine of the lettus. The vegetables part they didn't look washed and they were under cooked plus let me make this clear nothing had enough of flavor. I didn't like anything in my meal. I paid and still tipped but I will not ever go there again and advise you not to as well.

Understaffed. One waitress ran the whole place in front as host and waiter while taking and making take out orders. One sushi chef and one kitchen chef. There was no line but it took 10 minutes to be seated. Another long wait for the waitress to take our order. The miso soup came out cold and the appetizer came half way through our meal. The sushi rolls were falling apart and the rice was old and dry. This use to be one of my favorite places that I considered as high quality dining but unfortunately it is no longer the case. Not sure if it's due to new management or cut backs from covid. I don't recommend this place anymore.
Took my grandson to this restaurant and ordered sashimi combo, steak and shrimp. My grandson bit into a fishbone when eating a piece of salmon sashimi. I'm assuming they trained this chef outside behind the restaurant. I would be ashamed of myself if I offered my product like this to my customer. I never experienced this in the 3.5 years that I lived in Okinawa, Japan. Time to scratch this place off of our list. I visually inspected the fish myself and saw the bone.
The hostess and waitress was super rude. We went to celebrate my nieces birthday and the waitress rushed us the whole way through. Our party was also disrespected by uncalled comments. We never got refills when asked. The food is way over priced for the amount. Had a horrible experience before and now again, never again.
Probably the worst dining experience I've ever had what was the party at 7 we spent over $500 to each get about 4 oz of meat per item. I paid market price for a lobster and wasn't even given the full Lobster was also forced to share the calamari with the other people ridiculously small portions also only came with one small bowl of rice per person again we spent over $500 I will never ever ever ever go here again and I suggested no one ever does also the show was boring at best
One of the worst experiences I have had locally. Everything started fine. Ordered...drinks and first roll came out. The main course was supposed to come with miso soup and salad. Those never came. Never saw our server again after our Sushi boat arrived. After finising eating waited 30 minutes before I finally had to get up to ask for a box. Another table next to us waited 20 minutes and no one ever stopped by the table. They ended up leaving, having never even being acknowledged. I had to get up again to ask for the check. Definitely won't be back, and definitely will not recommend.
Horrible... my boyfriend and I went for lunch and were very disappointed. The staff was nice enough but the food was terrible. We ordered a combo sushi plate to share with a roll and 5 pieces of sushi. The roll was fine but we ended up having to send back the 5 piece sushi because it was clearly very poor quality and looked kind of gross and we just couldn’t bring ourselves to eat it. In addition to the poor quality sushi we ordered a plate of gyoza and it didn’t come until we were just about to leave. Definitely will not be going back to this location. The Pismo location is best by far.
Used to be one of our faves before pre-COVID… They are short-staffed! Never got refills and the Crunchy Roll we ordered was gross, it was soaked with Soy Sauce! Definitely not going back anytime soon!!
Oh where to begin. We arrived a few minutes early for our 6 o'clock reservation for a teppanyaki grill, only to wait while the owner answered the phone three times while we were standing there to take carry-out orders. Finally, we were informed that there was no reservation for us. There was a reservation for a group our size for 5 pm, but, according to the owner, who wouldn't even look at us or speak to us, *if* that was our reservation, we were too late. We were told by the server we would have to wait for another group of 6 at 6:30 if we wanted to sit at the grill, but that we could order drinks and appetizers while we waited. Unfortunately, there was one server for the entire restaurant. I am aware of the struggles restaurants and other small businesses face at this time due to COVID-19, but they seriously should have had one person handling phone orders and at least one other server on the floor for the volume of patrons in the establishment. We sat down and in about 15 minutes, we placed our drink orders. In another 15 minutes, we got our drinks and placed our appetizer orders. Another 15 minutes after that, we placed our entree orders. If you're keeping track, it is now over 50 minutes after we were seated and the group of 6 we were waiting on had never arrived. Our waitress had so many other patrons, especially two large groups at the other grills, she truly never had a chance to check on us for refills or anything. Finally, an hour and fifteen minutes after we arrived, we were informed that our chef was on his way, yet somehow our appetizers went out as carry-out orders, and did we want to place new appetizer orders. Again, our server was very apologetic and you could tell she was completely overwhelmed. Finally our chef came out and he was great, so skilled, funny, and entertaining! We really appreciated his talent and effort. At one point, he was told he needed to create multiple carry-out orders while he was preparing our dinner. He told the server he did not appreciate the way our table was being ignored for other tables and carry-out orders and that she should tell the owner that. I feel really bad for the people who worked so hard to make a bad situation work to the best of their ability. The bottom line is, the owners do not appreciate nor respect their patrons, their servers, or their chefs. The owners need not worry, we will make sure not to burden them with our patronage ever again.
Been here on several occasions but the last few the place has really taken a turn for the worse. I have three major issues. The waiters have been unfriendly, awkward and generally uninformed about the menu. I was in a party of 3 for my last visit, and even though there was only one other couple in the store it took 40min for our food. Worst part is, everyone's food came out about 10min apart. My wife's food was cold by the time my dish came out. Finally, quality. I almost always order the red dragon roll and am no stranger to spice food. However there was so much pepper oil on my dish that the rice was completely soaked. I have never hard a worse sushi roll. Literally all I could taste was pepper oil, everything else was completely drowned out.
Warning do not eat here, ordered a rainbow roll to go, and it had rotten fish on it, And for $18.50 it was very small. The fish was very thin and tiny. I also use the bathroom while waiting for my roll to be made, they were dilapidated and grossly filthy.
I would not recommend this place to my worst enemy! From the start of walking in we were given horrible attitude. We had a reservation and were on time to it but they were very busy so I guess that was our fault. The cook was extremely rude!! Would throw our rice bowls on our plates, he didn't ingage at all with us. The vegetables were not fully cooked and the meat was so raw most of us didn't eat it. One of our guests had a soda spilled all over them and they just gave him towels and napkins to clean it up. We were told walking in that there is a $10 cake fee for bringing your own cake which they provided you a knife lol. Then the waitress said "oh that cake looks good and you have extra piece for me" so my husband they kind man he is gave up a piece because he felt awkward. Well they still charged us the 10 for using their knife to cut it even though we gave her a piece. Then the bathrooms, let me tell you are absolutely the most disgusting bathrooms i have even been in. The stalls dont lock at all, toilets dont flush and the toilet paper is on the floor. For paying $350 for 5 plates and 2 drinks you would like the place would be better quality for sure. I would hate to see what the kitchen looks like. So moral of the story, WE WILL NEVER BE GOING BACK HERE AND DO NOT RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE EVER!!!!! WORST SERVICE AND FOOD IS NOT COOKED FULLY!
Why 1 star? The rating would not be fair if I did not provide justification. 1. The first sign of a bad dining experience was not receiving the usual complimentary green beans. I was ok with not being served the beans. 2. We ordered sushi and short ribs and those items were delivered to the table. However we had no plates, silverware or chopsticks. We had to ask for them, then waited another 5 minutes to receive them. Ribs got cold. 3. The sushi boat order comes with miso soup and salad. (3 of us ordered this). Those items never arrived. This ties in to the other reviews against this place! That is 6 plates of food we never received! 4. Sushi was delivered, but no wasabi with our almost $100 order of sushi. Again, we had to ask for it. Another 5 minutes go by before getting wasabi. The waiter gave us soup bowels to prep our wasabi and soy sauce. 5. As mentioned, we ordered 2 entrees of short ribs. Each order comes with a bowel of rice. We never received our bowels of rice either. 2 more plates of food we never received. 6. The portions and quality of short ribs were not good. We were served bones surrounded by gristle. Those familiar with short ribs know about the round bones. All of this served on a mountain of fried cabbage. Bottom line was $50 for fried cabbage and gristle. 7. My experience about this restaurant continues to get worse. I communicated with our waiter about the plates of food we did not receive and he said they were "complimentary". I was shocked. We did not get 8 plates of paid food. The menu specifically says what items comes with the paid entrees. I had to explain to the waiter, who is also the cashier, 3 times about the missing miso soup, salad and bowels of rice. I also offered to review the menu with him to show what items come with the order! He refused and displayed no sense of concern. 8. I was discounted $8 for not receiving 8 plates of food. Yanagi Sushi & Grill has failed to deliver the full order to customers before. 9. There are similar reviews and empirical experiences of folks not getting their full paid entrees and I believe Yanagi knows what they are doing. I do not want to classify this as theft, but others must speak up and make it known if this happens to them.
Let me keep this short: Service= (1) Non engaging hostess, after 15 min someone finally comes to take order. Then brings food, No return to see if everything was ok or if we wanted more. Food quality, presentation & value = (1) not even enough fish in the rolls to taste it. Roll cut and plated. No garnish very plain. Over priced everything for very small portions (yes I know we are in pandemic inflation but really?) And to top it off I had to ask for Wasabi, ginger and soy sauce! Ugh.

I made the mistake of coming here today. I ordered four rolls of nothing but rice and a little bit of fish. Paid 75$ worst decisions of my life Mikados is way better. Do yourself a favor and choose a different restaurant.
The sushi here is denky and horrible. The price was way to expensive for what it is. I personally think grocery store sushi was better. Worst decision of my life. I spend 100$ on rice and seaweed !!!!
Food is not fresh, seems they try to add flavor by adding salt. Service was below average. Dishes did not match the pictures on the menu. Low quality with high prices. Very disappointed. It used to be a very good place, but it has gone downhill. Not coming back.
I used to know yanagis for its quality sushi, after picking up a recent order, was super disappointing, from the size of the rolls to how little they put in the roll, for the price i expect better quality and presentation was not as expected. To go orders seem to get skimped majorly. Very disappointing experience.
