Opinions de Takuma Santa Monica
Great staff, all of them speak Japanese. This place is pretty excellent, and their dishes are served tastefully. Standout winners were the karaage, unfiltered sake, yellowtail sashimi, and tofu. All in all a great experience, and a little pricey but definitely worthwhile from a quality standpoint!
Our favorite izakaya place!! The chef is so friendly and thoughtful. We love all the food here, always over eating but worth it. Reasonable price, always the same great quality food. Definitely will visit more often!
We finally stopped in to try this Japanese restaurant! This is an Izakaya restaurant. Their menu has a variety of options, snacks,(sozai), Japanese Salads, sashimi, along with hot dishes, dishes and delicious desserts! We started with the Kabocha Salad, Japanese pumpkin. The pumpkin arrived in a generous scoop, mousse texture with crackers and lettuce. It was a bit bland but I enjoyed it. $6.80 Our favorite dish was the Kara Age!! It arrived piping hot! We asked for ponzu sauce to dip, although the chicken was tasty in its own. $14.60 Next came the Brown Rice Scallop Risotto made with a lobster broth. This arrived in sizzling, (see video). The scallops were a bit chewy. It was very rich but tasty. $18 We also shared the Buckwheat Chicken Noodle Soup which was tasty but slightly bland, however it was beautifully presented. $15.60 Finally dessert! We shared the tiramisu $10, and creme Brule $12. Both desserts were really very good! The interior space was nice and contemporary and sleek. The bathrooms were clean, single rooms, one for women and the other, for men. The Japanese staff were all attentive and kind! Metered parking on Wilshire or the side streets.
Amazing staff. Tasty sushi. Great service! Highly recommend the salmon hand roll and salmon sashimi. Those were our favorite items! Gyoza was solid. Eggplant dish was good, but we anticipated it being warm/hot dish…just a heads up it is a cold dish! We also ordered the cooked salmon plate…that was not our favorite item, but it was solid. Would recommend exploring their unique menu. Limited outdoor seating (dog friendly), beautiful and plenty of indoor seating. Parking street side or north of Wilshire. Hope to be back soon!!
Came here with kids and they love their rolls. We ordered Sukiyaki, Karage, Chicken Saboro and a lot more. The waiter was very attentive, being with kids we add order at different time, with different request, and they got it all right and with a smile. Limited parking lot in front of the restaurant.
I went for lunch. I picked the Mackerel option from the lunch special. Food was great. Staff was friendly and offered suggestions.
Very nice treat, healthy & nutritious foods. I like the taste of the dishes. Various selection and nice customer service. The portions compare to their prices are less though I will still give 5stars.
Japanese food tapas style. Great change-up from the usual sushi places. Even with two people, you try about six different dishes. Order the mackeral and they will blow torch it in front of you at the table. Pretty good and not too fishy. Sukiyaki was good but make sure you don’t overcook the meat. Tsukune is okay - they are just chicken meatballs, a cheap appetizer. Get the assorted sashimi for some balance. Two thumbs up
Staff was very friendly and attentive. Fish was fresh. Would definitely come back. Got the salmon roll and yellowtail
These are not Ubereats level of foods. They deliver you awesome foods with perfection. I wonder if the owner is Japanese or Korean. Anyway, they were so delicious.
Delicious fresh fish. Tried chicken karage, sashimi, and spicy tuna dip. All delicious. Japanese fare with a unique twist. Good service.
I really enjoyed my meal here! I loved the seared mackerel. The chicken was just ok though in my opinion. There was no sauce on the side and it was a little lackluster bc of that. Looking forward to coming back and trying more of the menu!

Creative Japanese food, nice specials. Owner/ chef serves great lunch and dinners with recipes from his family in Japan. Love it . Very small.
Just tried Takuma today and I have to say, everything was super delicious!! Will be back for more in the future! Everything was perfect and super yummy! Thank you!❤️❤️❤️❤️
Amazing food! We had a variety of sushi which were all very well presented and delicious. We also had the homemade panna cotta 😋 We will definitely be coming back to try more from the menu. My son was so happy we found this little gem as Japanese food is his favourite.
If you like a quiet place to eat and for a good chat with a friend/partner with a warm sake by the side of your dish these is the place ..its small but comfortable
Everything was OUTSTANDING. So many different flavors and textures, and it’s all incredibly fresh. We will definitely be back.

Takuma has become one of my favorite spots for a reason. Every dish has lovely balance—blending umami, sweetness, and saltiness in a way that never feels overpowering. The service is professional, courteous, and attentive without being intrusive. You get the sense that the staff genuinely care about your experience. Cleanliness is clearly a top priority here. Every time I visit, the space feels well-kept and clean. And unlike many restaurants, the atmosphere is calm and inviting—ideal for a peaceful dinner or thoughtful conversation.
We went for a pretty late lunch at 3:30ish, so there was plenty of tables available. We got the albacore tuna salad, karaage chicken, okonomiyaki, and the salmon. Loved the tuna salad, the sesame sauce was refreshing. I like the texture of the tuna which is half-raw and the crispy things (fried wonton strip maybe) in the salad. The karaage was great, the skin was beautifully crispy and the meat was tender and juicy. The salmon was decent, though I thought there could be some more marination or aroma in it. The okonomiyaki was pretty good. Just make sure to eat it when it still got the heat of the pan so that the outer layer is still crispy and the batter hasn’t gotten muddy. Overall a nice and quiet place to have a decent Japanese meal.

I finally got to try this eatery. Not what I expected. Not bad, but different: When I visit a Japanese restaurant, I expect a sushi bar with a sushi chef, who is skilled and trained for years/decades. Nope. To my wife's surprise, whondoesnt eat raw foods, there were more cooked food options. Overall, it was good but not great. Their chicken curry cutlet was more like chicken jerkey (overcooked, thin, stringy/chewy.) I expected a more plump piece of breaded chicken patty. It was literally like chicken jerkey. How can they serve this? The curry was okay, but nothing memorable. The yellowtail appetizer offering was more like poke yet the sauce was overpowering. I had to force myself to finish, and not waste any hamachi. I prefer more subtlety.
We ordered via Postmates; the food came in cute boxes and was delivered in about an hour. Spicy Tuna Dip ($13.95): They give 3 white rice cracker squares which wasn't that good. I would rather have the regular crispy rice. The spicy tuna also tasted weird. Hard pass. Kakuni Bento Box ($19.95): This was a rip off. They gave only one piece of pork belly with two large pieces of steamed potatoes. The pork belly was okay - not very flavorful & also a bit dry. Yakiniku Beef Bento Box ($19.95): The beef was way better than the kakuni but the portion was small. Bento Box Sides: The two shredded side dishes were not edible to us. The potato salad was good. The green beans do not go with the salad.

May be authentic but because of modern trust, it was hard to tell. We had marinated tofu, kakuni, potato croquets, garlic somen, and panna cotta . For the price, I expected a bit more. Both taste of food and service were just okay.
