Opinions de Madras Café Sunnyvale
Food is very reasonably priced and prepared really quickly. The dosas here were massive and can be eaten across multiple meals. I got a tomato and cheese dosa and it was quite good. The side chutneys were slightly spicy but not too bad.
Convenient and casual Indian cuisine restaurant offering dosas and other vegetarian fare. Food is spicy and delicious. Service is prompt, friendly and courteous. Prices are unbearable, you can have a full meal for under $10. Understandably, the place is busy and the noise level can get high.
A very honest to goodness South Indian eatery with food that gives that back-in-India vibes and service that is no frills. The darshini-style food is exactly what you’d expect - Dosas, idlis and uthappams hit the spot. We went for a Friday lunch with colleagues, and needless to say the afternoon productivity was zero. The service isn’t what you’d call “elegant” but clean, prompt and courteous. Tables are clean, and you’d have to go get your own water and silverware. Like I said, you do t go here for an experience. But you do get an experience.
I am a typical south Indian vegetarian, this place has never failed to meet our expectations. Amazing food with good quality is the best reason why you need to be here. Especially the lunch thali is one of their best must try that I always order here and is my most favorite of all.
Okay, so we’ve eaten at that place on West El Camino Real in Sunnyvale a bunch – lunch and dinner. It’s always packed, which is nice, but honestly, the food has been a bit hit or miss. Some days the vada and sambar are decent, but other times everything just feels…average. The chutneys were really bad, and the filter coffee was surprisingly sour. Vijay was right about the service being inconsistent; we had a waiter who seemed totally uninterested. Parking was always a struggle too. I’d probably just go somewhere else next time.
The food here is very good. I typically have Dosa or Uttapam. Both of which are always excellent. Bustling and can be somewhat noisy. During busy periods you order and are seated only when your food is ready. During quieter times they seat you on arrival. I’m a bit deaf and when it’s crowded the noise is very echoey and I can struggle to hear friends. Prices are reasonable and it is child friendly with high chairs available. Serve yourself water.
I recently flew from Bengaluru to Sunnyvale for business and was delighted to find an Indian restaurant offering authentic, homely flavours. The food was comforting and reminiscent of home. It gets quite crowded on weekends, but the delicious cuisine and friendly service make it worth the visit.
Thee best South Indian in the Sunnyvale area! Service is quick, efficient, love that you order at the counter, take a seat, and your food comes out quickly. You pretty much serve yourself water and grab your own utensils and cups, so there is not much customer service. When it comes to the food, this place never dissapoints when it comes to the food, and it is always consistent.
I visited with my friends a few weeks ago! The service was incredible, the food was outstanding and everything was vegetarian and/or easy to make vegan. I will definitely be coming back again and again. We ordered a wide variety of entrees and appetizers so we could share, and every single item was amazing. Loved it!!
My friend recommended Madras Café for authentic South Indian food. It was so delicious! I ordered the tomato dosa and loved it. Others also said the mysore masala dosa was their favorite. The dosa portion sizes were generous and they came with 3 chutneys and sambar. The restaurant was pretty busy when we went on a Wednesday night, but the wait was worth it. Would love to come back.

Regular customer at Madras cafe and order through Door Dash for many years. Almost from the inception. Good service and quality of food is great. Authentic South Indian cuisine. Managed very well. …
Overall good service, plenty of seating, and my go to is the paper masala dosa or idli/ vada combo!

We had a great time. We went to visit a young man at Stanford University. We all went to Madras cafe (I am from East Coast). We were there by 11:30 am as we were warned about the popularity of this…
Rasam vada was decent. Utappam and masala dosa were good too. Chutneys were okayish. Ambience is decent. It’s not a fine dining place.
Ordered Rava Masala, Podi Masala and Karam Dosa along with Upma Vada and Pongal Vada combos and mini Idly for the table. The dosas were absolutely delicious along with the chutneys and sambhars. They were generous with the refill as well. The upma was amazing in taste, probably the best one in the town. The pongal could have been better as it was a bit dry. We had to order first on the counter and wait to be seated for about 15 minutes. Since it was a Sunday, it was crowded so expect some wait time.
Madras Café is a go-to spot for authentic South Indian food in Sunnyvale. The menu is purely vegetarian and packed with classic options—from masala dosa to pongal to filter coffee that’s strong and satisfying. The place can get very busy, especially on weekends, so expect a bit of a wait. It’s more of a no-frills, fast-casual experience—don’t go in expecting fancy ambiance, but the food more than makes up for it. Everything is flavorful, fresh, and reasonably priced. Their chutneys and sambar are standout, and they’re generous with portions too. Definitely a favorite for South Indian comfort food in the Bay Area.
A very good Indian cafe serving South Indian food. When we entered we order our food at the counter then we had to wait to be seated. The service is quick as we waited for roughly 5 minutes for a table to become available. It was busy when we visited but didn't wait for too long for our food to arrive. The restaurant looked clean and has a large amount of seating, but the toilets need refurbishing. The quality of the food is good and tasty. Water and cutlery is self service. The staff clean the tables quickly after customers leave which is good freeing up space for more customers. You can order for takeaway too.
Pretty good dosas here. I got the podi masala dosa and I thought the flavor was very tasty. A tiny bit on the spicy side and it builds as you eat more. The potato filling in the middle was very yummy…

Staff is super friendly, food comes out pretty fast once ordered \n\nLove their mini idlis, dosa and coffee. Poori kurma is also pretty delicious. Now they also serve fresh sugarcane juice.

It was quite loud and busy but the wait time wasn't too bad. The veg biryani was good at first but it became harder to eat because it had so much oil in it.
Wouldnt recommend this place for unlimited lunch thali, portions are limited though sold as unlimited. No one is available to check on refills of curries, sambar etc and dont respond when you ask for…

Food is average. Other south indian places nearby have better sambar and dosa/idli. Although the chutney here are good. Long wait times and we have to order before we sit down and if we want something more after we ate what we ordered first, we have to walk to the counter and place the order again. Hope they improve on this service.
Very casual place, good dosa. I had the special rava dosa. While the filling was great, the dosa was like papad, very crispy. My wife had the mysore masala and it was good. The price is much lower than other restaurants in the bay area.
Established and serving South Indian vegetarian food for a long time. Overall it’s a decent place, however they can improve taste and service better. Chutneys are very bland and so are other items except for Sambar. Sambar Vada is good, Dahi Vada is ok on the bland side otherwise ok. Asked for Onion Ravva dosa with special request not make it toooo crispy, they served under done dosa with plenty of onions :( Quality wise pretty decent and not oily :) service could be better, place order and pay, they bring your food to the table instead of taking order while seated. They have grocery store with food court with a shared kitchen. For pickups order from food court for faster service and they may have additional items and snacks.
The price in Madras cafe is lower than most other Indian restaurants in bay area. The South Indian food quality esp meal is also good. The coffee is good The interiors and service are below average. Overall reasonable Indian option in south bay if one is looking quality South Indian food.
Visiting San Francisco and this place is very well known for their South Indian vegetarian dishes. Food was delicious and came out really fast. Quick service. The place could use an update, the atmosphere needs a better vibe, had random music on, would recommend to sticking to Indian theme. All in all, I do recommend this restaurant for South Indian cravings. Filter coffee was nice and strong, yum.
Starting with ambiance - this place is unclean with dusty air filters, lamps, and surfaces. There is no door between the bathroom and restroom and the open seating concept seems haphazard and worse than a fast food restaurant. I tried the onion rava masala dosa that came with sambar and three chutneys. Overall, the dish lacked taste and freshness. The onion rava dosa was too oily, and the chutneys offered no flavor whether it be tomato, coconut, or whatever else. The price here was reasonable - $9-12 for most things which reflect the quality and taste.
I’ve been here twice. My first experience was ok, but this time it was bad. Service is bad and can be improved. The guy at the billing counter was super rude and not paying attention at all. Our order came late - he forgot one item and said “we’re running late” with a straight face. The waiters on the other hand were good. I wouldn’t blame them. Food on the other hand was average. The Vada and sambar were good, apart from that everything was subpar. The chutneys were horrible. Filter coffee was too bad. Tasted sour and no trace of coffee decoction. I liked the open seating outside, it was a good vibe. But food and service are more important to me. I don’t see myself coming back here for more.
This place has a horrible setup for customers. \nYou stand in the line to place the order. Then you again wait to be seated. Then you wait further to get your food. It you want to order more food…

tldr; should have gone to sarvana bhavan A lotta folks had listed Madras cafe as the best South Indian restaurant in the town. My experience was overwhelmingly disappointing. We were hungry so ended up ordering a lot of items like podi masala dosa, mysore masala dosa, kottu parotta, chili bhajji, tomato rice, idly podi, mango lassi, badam milk. Yes we were extremely hungry. But all of it was really lack luster. Idk there was just something missing from all of the food which just led to a really disappointing food experience. Service was good! The service staff were pretty great. Im not sure if Im a fan of places where you gotta order first, pay and then get a seat. Its a bit off putting if im going to dine in. This restaurant does that so take it for what it is. The only dish that was somewhat okayish was the chilli bhajji because we ordered last call, it might have been prepared fresh. Am I implying the other food was not fresh? Not at all. But we all know garma garam pakode slap!! All in all, I think the place is very skippable and there’s a sarvana bhavan like 5 mins away or maybe even a2b (for more south indian variety than just dosa idly sambar) Note: 2 of my party members were sick in the morning too!
Overhyped and Bad service! Went seeing the 6k+ ratings but disappointed overall. Food was okayish, masala dosa sucks, kothu paratha was okayish, Idly vada was meh. Service was the worst of all, staff needs training, interior needs overhaul AND PLEASE focus on your hygiene!! Im surprised how this restaurant is still operating. My recommendation, skip this Indian restaurant.👎
