Opinions de Swiston's Beef & Keg Tonawanda
This place is spot on for beef on weck as intended by Buffalo. Your sandwich is best consumed at the restaurant. If it sits too long it gets soggy. They pile the beef high & it tastes beefy. Get the horseradish plus another if u like it hot. Very good chili as well.
The beef on weck was yummy and not unmemorable, the spicy sauce with the onion rings was delish, the experience of paddling up behind swinstons in a kayak and eating wet on a patio was amazing. But honestly the service was the best part of this place. Our server refilled our dog and our waters with ice water, dealt with us acting silly, was super attentive, and when the kiddo was in tears at our table (a little kayak exhaustion) came over offering help / whatever she could.
Swinton has always had a short menu, it use to be just beef on weck or chili. Now they have added wings, fries and onion rings. The food is always good, the service not bad. You can either sit inside or on the deck above the canal. You can either park your vehicle in the parking lot or tie your boat up in the canal. Great place. I've been going there for 40 years.
Food was excellent the chicken wings were top tier. .. patio area was a little cold but that is to be expected mid December
Food was outstanding. Service was short but we all pitched in and she got some help. She was friendly and handled it like a rockstar! Cute dinning room overlooking the water.
We went there for the first time on 10/12/23 after knowing about this place forever. The food was spot on and our server Gena was a real sweetheart. Definitely going back and strongly recommended.
Just stopped there as they had a tent outside during Canal Fest selling chicken souvlakis. They were great tasting! Would recommend anyone walking or driving to the canal fest to stop by and try one. They are only $6.00. There is no lines like at the canal fest and have them done in less than a minute. A+++
First time there in 25+ years....Beef on weck, fries and wings were excellent ...great happy hour....we will be back!!
I am from City of Tonawanda and now live in Peoria AZ, I look forward to beef on weck whenever I come back, and this visit did not disappoint !!
It's a great place to eat it's by the water you can see boats from the club across the street. The help is pretty friendly. And also Taylor's to the younger crowd with dart machines and jukeboxes and things like that. I would recommend it's not that expensive.
Best kept secret on the waters. We always have room to tie up our boat and either eat on our boat or eat on outside overlooking the water. We enjoyed the best beef that we had in sometime, chicken souvlaki and good size/tasting wings. Shirley temple for my daughter and the"dogie bag" was appreciated. The bartender/waitress was the best and happiest we ever had....thanks for a great afternoon
I'm here from Texas, and they have a fantastic beef sandwich, but the real stars are the 2 ladies working there. They are so sweet and just lovely, phenomenal women. I would recommend them simply for the service I received. But honestly super awesome beef sandwich!
It was divey, the bartender was a little Sassy but we loved it. Beef on weck was my favorite I had in the Buffalo area. I’d definitely go back
Love it. The roast beef was delicious. The server was fabulous. Atmosphere was amazing . Ate outside on the deck over looking the water and marinas . Just watching the ducks go by.
Been a regular for over 20 years. They've added wings and other fried goodies. The wings were awesome and the Beef on Weck is as tender and flavorful as ever. Jessica did a great job behind the bar!
My first experience of a Beef on Weck. It was awesome. The most tender melt in your mouth roast beef I have ever had. The wings were also awesome large, tender, juicy wings that were perfectly crisp on the outside. I highly recommend visiting there.
Bartender was friendly, efficient and very attentive. We stopped by for a famous roast beef and were extremely satisfied. Our visit was around 1pm on tuesday, 2/28/17. Kudos to the bartender and cook. We'll be back.
Went here for my birthday. First time trying them out. It's a nice place by the canal. Can see the boats come in and out. The service was great. The food was excellent and came out pretty quick.
Great beef on weck!! Awsome hand cut fries!! Reasonable prices.
Love it! Delicious food, fun at the bar or quiet on the porch. You can take your boat to swistons and park at the private dock! Amazing place TUESDAY has 50¢ wings!!
Great place, good food at reasonable prices. Friendly people and setvice.
The only thing you need to get here is the beef on weck with onion rings as a side! The beef is delicious, and the sauce that comes with the onion rings goes well on the sandwich. (Even though you definitely don't need it!) Service is a bit slow when seated for dining, but they're all lovely!
It was so much fun celebrating here on Monday. Rachel and Don were great. The food was delicious. Beef on Weck and Wings. We had the patio to ourselves for dinner, which we loved. Good conversation, many, many laughs and new friends made at the bar. We WILL be back! Went back a few times since. Not treated as good as the first time. Most recently the bartender complained about her tip!! Really...how tacky and unprofessional!
We Kayaked in. The place was pretty alright but the experience with our waitress is why we went out of our way to leave a review. Amy was super attentive and hilarious. She made our already awesome night even better. She was extremely personable and made us super comfortable in a brand new place we never been to. We'd go back for her. The wings are pretty solid too.
Best Roast Beef in the Tonawanda! Awesome service the wings are great too!
Thank you to Rachel and Jessica for hosting our large party as we remembered my parents who got engaged there in the 1970s! Rachel and Jessica were super friendly and helpful and made the evening a success.
My 1st time here and Don my bartender made me feel like a VIP right away. Will definitely be back as long as Don is here.
I was pretty impressed with everything about this place. The interior could use some help but the staff was great. Probably the best weck roll I've had in Buffalo. The beef on weck was also great. First reasonable bill I've had in over a year too.
What a difference a year makes! Last time we were here, the service was so bad we vowed we would never return. It took 20 minutes to get 2 roast beef sandwiches to go, and that was after waiting nearly 10 minutes for the bartender to finish talking to the only other 3 people in the place so she could take our order. On a whim, we decided we'd give it another try and I'm so glad we did. The menu has expanded and the new staff behind the bar managed to be fast, friendly, and more than competent. In half the time of our our previous visit, we had beverages, wings, fries and beef on weck ordered, prepared and served to us with smiles. And the food was great! Wings were crispy but not dried out. Good flavor. My wife loved the loganberry wings. I was quite happy with the mediums. Roast beef was a generous portion, tender and tasty, no gristle. I was thrilled that they had a great scotch ale on tap, too. We will definitely come back here!
GREAT wings and a great happy hour. Roast beef is always fantastic. Kelly is always on top of things, very efficient!
A classic must stop for the roast beef on weck. Simple, no frills, chill vibe.
The one star review has never even been to the bar or met the bartender EEEYUCK 10/10 place and bartended by a great bartender who goes with her gut and pays attention to her surroundings
Great bartenders, excellent food and atmosphere.. The 1 star reviews are from people on TikTok that didn’t like when the bartender kicked out a guy who was being disrespectful and vulgar to other customers. Never been to establishment.
Love sitting in the dining room checking out the boats and Canadian Geese that happened to be eating across the water. Great food and Birch Beer!
I flew up from Florida and was craving a Beef on Weck with Fries and Brown Gravy! It was awesome! Go get one! Go BILLS!!
Pleasantly surprised! Been years since last visit (which wasn't good) great service, really good wings, drinks, beef on weck looked good. Will go back
They have a limited menu, but what they serve is very good. My uncle recommended the place after wanting to take my partner and step daughter out for beef on Weck.
The food is passable for bar food, but once you step in this aged bar, it’s the atmosphere that takes over and makes it such a nice place. Great bartender and servers. Another addition, are that the locals that are there all the time open themselves and are willing to tell you all about the area. We liked this place.
What a great experience. The best wings and roast beef in area. Not to mention the homemade chili was awesome as well. Waitress was great . Chef came out and asked if we were satisfied. Very reasonable. First time and wont be our last. Thanks. 😊
Very open inside. Plenty of open space inside for possible events. There is outside seating as well, the view is a Lil to be desired but open none the less. One of my favorite places to get Beef on Weck. Beefs juicy and the rolls soft with the perfect amount of salt. They used to run a poker game but not sure if they still do. Not much in City of Tonawanda, this place is must to eat or drink at
The chicken wings were cooked and sauced very well. However the restaurant was down 1 fryer and it took an hour and 20 minutes to be served
Great, very casual restaurant and bar with a very friendly staff. Beef on weck was great. Prices aren't bad either. Limited menu, mostly bar type of food. One of the only places I know of that still has a working phone booth!
Pretty good. There is better beef on weck around in my opinion but it is good and gets the job done. Chili is very good. Bar scene was nice big pool table with plenty of space to play.
Came across Swiston's after seeing beef on weck featured on some food travel show and googling "best beef on weck Buffalo". Had some business to take care of in the area one day and decided to slightly deviate from my route to stop and try the legendary sandwich. Showed up right around when they opened and was greeted by a friendly lady at the bar. I loaded up on the free popcorn (nice touch; super tasty) and some ice cold Coke and decided to sit in the section overlooking the river. The setting made me very nostalgic for my childhood (90's kid) and felt great. A far cry from a fine dining experience, but perfect nonetheless. I ordered the beef on weck with a side of fries, as well as some wings. The beef on weck was just not happening for me, sorry. The beef itself was quite dry and lacking any semblance of flavour- absolutely no seasoning. Extremely bland. I tried to remedy it with the horseradish and that red/orange sauce, but even that didn't help the cause any. Was very underwhelmed with it... but!!! The wings!!! Oh buddy, the wings!!! Being from Toronto, Anchor and Duff's are all you hear about... let me tell you, the wings here at Swiston's leave those places in the dust. Beautiful big wings cooked to crispy perfection and seasoned just right. Drooling just thinking back to how good they were. Fries were great too. I will go back for the friendly service, nostalgia factor, and not least, those heavenly wings... Swiston's, you're good people, good eats...
I stopped in here with a couple of friends. We had been out boating and were happy to be able to just pull up to the dock and go inside for a delicious roast beef sandwich and a very well prepared Bloody Mary. Both the sandwich and the drinks were very well prepared and served in a timely fashion by a friendly barkeeper. I won't hesitate to go back again. The prices were very reasonable and the food was very tastie.
Bar was a little sticky. Great roast beef on weck. Beef was tender and rare as ordered. Roll was extremely fresh. Au jus was very good.
I brought a large family group and we docked right from the canal for lunch during a rainstorm. Beef sandwiches were HUGE, wings done really well, great onion rings, friendly service. We stayed quite awhile because of the rain and the staff made us feel welcome. The only weird part was the use of canned tomatoes on the chicken souvlaki, which was completely bizarre.
Great beef. More done than I like, but still great flavor and tender. Hand cut fries done the way they should be. Wings are everywhere in this city, but done well few and far between. These were perfectly crispy and not over sauced. Server was great as well, checked up on us, but was not intrusive like some servers.
Their wings and chicken souvlaki wrap are very good. We like to stop here after kayaking in the warm months. We recently ordered takeout and everything was very good.
Nice place with bar type food. Great service. Will return.
First time here. The beef and wings were great. The fries could have been cooked a bit longer but were still good. Kelly, our server was wonderful. The bar is like stepping into the past. Pretty cool joint.
Our good friend recommended Swiston's and we're happy they did. Great Beef on Weck...I would like to have a little juis with it as it was lacking a bit of moisture. This is a preference and yours might be different. Loved the onion rings...more on the beer battered side. Sauces are tasty... wings are standard naked Buffalo wings executed to crispy saucey deliciousness. Now the real gem was Rachel, who offered great service with a laugh and a smile. Give this family place a try... You should not be disappointed.
Bar with a dining area located creekside with many boats docked nearby. Wait was 1.5 hours at steak house nearby so we ended up here. My roast beef was delicious and the rest of the food was fine too. Limited menu, but what they had was just fine.
Don't let the old sign and outside decor deter you from trying this place. Definitely gives off local watering hole vibes inside. They have a limited menu but it is one of the better Beef on Wecks I've had since living in Buffalo. Add their hand cut fries or onion rings to your meal and you'll be sure to walk away stuffed and satisfied.
They need to add more items. Especially cheese. They don't have cheese sauce for the fries.... They don't have cheese for the roast beef sandwich. No cheese for the chili. Etc. What is that lol. Maybe add gluten free buns too. They are cheap and easy to access these days and can be frozen and thawed one at a time. Your bartender Heather is a doll. Quick sweet and loyal to her job.
Wait staff was absolutely lovely, with a fairly limited menu I grabbed the beef on weck edible but nothing to brag about. Onion rings were lovely. The others I was with said the wings were ok as well
Beef on weck still delicious...not enough staff on a hot summer weekend. I'd still go back. Has that old time bar feel
The beef on week (and which I eat only Kaiser for this sandwich) was available, however a take home dinner they put on the wrong bun...okay then the beef is a bit drier than I like and cut a bit thick. However the food was still good, beef kind of stringy in places but nothing over the top gross. Except, if you want more than a dollar tip...please remember this is also a restaurant ad well as a bar and the bar seemed staffed so I'm not sure why our waitress thought letting her "cheeks" hang out of her shorts was in any way appropriate attire for serving a family of four two of which were children. My 14 year old got quite the kick out of it with his friends upon returning from eating and boating at/by Swiston's. All in all we will return, hopefully management can come up with casual dress code policy where ALL private parts are covered...???
Decent pub grub really nothing special. The sauce for their onion rings was really good but I thought they were known for roast beef and i wasn't overly impressed with my beef on weck. Inside the restaurant is rustic which I liked and their outdoor seating on the water is nice.
Went for lunch and ordered roast beef sandwich with fries. They offered plenty of condiments and, while the beef was moist and the serving generous, there wasn't much flavor to the meat. It's like it wasn't even soaked in au jus or flavored. The service was fine but I don't feel motivated to return.
5/10/25 not many diners very noisy fast service but roast beef was cold, the role was not real kimowick just a soft role with salt, onions rings were just ok a little over cooked. Two beef 1 basket of onion rings 2 spades $ 40.00. We decided not to go back!!!
Not sure where they are getting these 5 star reviews from but this place is a has been Maybe 10 year ago this place had good roast beef, but not the case now. Small portions and dry. Place looks straight out of 1978, looks like somewhere you would take your girlfriend to cheat on your wife. Lotta potential with location and a boat dock...even paint and a small menu change would help this place tremendously
Friendly lil bar serving free popcorn and fried up favorites like shrimp, fingers, wings and roast beef and a selection of beers. Very pretty views of Ellicottville Creek.
The food was wonderful however I don’t recommend coming here on a holiday. We came here on Labor Day and there were only 2 workers. We waited for about 2 hours for 3 roast beefs 5 chicken wings and one chili.
Took my wife last night, prices were much more, food was much worse... If you only serve 2 things... They better be Good !! The Roast beef seemed it had been steamed all day, (no taste, no color & no gravy)... We also got to watch trash float down the river & listen to the local drunks burp out loud at the bar.....We wont be going back ever again !! . Obviously they have lost any desire to serve decent food.
Roast beef is dry and very well done. Fries we're stick and it appears that they've been around for awhile. I must say the beer was good! The service was good as well!
Roast Beef was good. Bread was wet from too much juice or plate sitting waiting in kitchen. Onion rings were full of grease and all very dark possibly from old oil or dirty fryer. Chicken wrap was totally soaked and when we open wrap it had old pcs of tomato chunks which we pulled out. No tasiki sauce in a Greek chicken wrap!! Though it had some taste to it. Beer was very cold+ but the place seem dirty. First impression left a concern of what the kitchen may look like or cooking staff. Will give it a second chance on a better day.
Fries were half cooked, and the waitress warned the table next to us of the poor quality fries but failed to warn our table, and she was right; they were terrible! The horseradish had no heat nor flavor ;I am not sure what happened, but I would not recommend this place.
Very inconsistent with their roast beef on weck. Sometimes it's alright, other times it's not even edible with the amount of fat that's on the meat, making it chewy and just gross. The gravy they have on the menu is clearly generic store bought gravy. They don't offer aujus on the side for your sandwich, and the fries are always rock hard and disappointing.
Place was cold temperature wise. Empty because of game. Poor server tried to adjust heat. Beef on weck good, not as good as schwabls. Gravy tasted jarred. Service was good sinceplace was empty, but server seemed very professional.
Don't try ordering food for lunch, they never answer there phone. Other than the 1 time I was able to eat from there, it was delicious but somehow they gave me salsa for a beef on weck instead of ketchup.
First time here, I was not impressed and will probably not return unless I here there have been so big improvements. From the parking lot looking at this place I was unsure if this is a place I want to take my family. After entering the dark smelly bar is the first room you see. You pass through there to get to the dinning room were you will feel like the building is sliding down into the creek. Rost beef was not as fresh as you would like it to be. Service was ok there doing the best they can. Had to use the restroom before leaving and it was a disaster definitely not had a proper cleaning in a long time, looked like they have painted over and over it may times. This whole place need a total makeover. I would say the owners have given up on it.
Thier roast beef sandwiches were dry and tasteless, but it was quiet, and clean, no napkins, just a roll of cheap paper towels on the table. I liked the atmosphere though. The girl behind the bar/server joined into our private conversation by adding her own, that was rude, seeing as we were at a table and she was behind the bar !!!!! I would go back for the atmosphere and cleanliness though.
The food is always great. The service was terrible. Waitress seemed distracted. Do something about the door banging to the patio. Dining room needs a deep cleaning.
Never thought it would come to this the place is now being run by the bartenders, last few times i've been there bartender standing around, don't do their job. The place doesn't even have any type of sugar substitute. Last experience. Did it male bartender worked there for a while thinks he owns the place. I took our food order. Forgot to put it in. We're in 45 minutes. Then asked if we ordered food? Because you forgot it is that an attitude. Against me, so I told him off, and we left, and this isn't the first time we've had problems there. 30 year customer, I've been through the good and the bad I think you should learn how to manage you. R restaurant before it falls in the river. As well, yeah, and the girl that keeps the jukebox off full blast all the time too. There's other places and better places to eat. Now, I wish you the best. I had more time. I'd write a letter to management but it would probably get read by one of the employee owner. People
Nice spot, needs some help. Perfect for a "bar rescue"- a once busy and popular spot is showing its age. Tired food, tired infrastructure, lackluster experience. We visited on a Friday night around 7:00pm, some folks seated at the bar but the dining room was empty. Prompt and friendly service were very welcome, but the food did not back them up. (We ordered two beef on weck, one with fries) When I asked the waitress about the quality of fries she said they were hand cut, but "not the crispiest". She surely was not wrong, however the fries were not to blame. I would say they needed another 5-7 minutes of cooking, or a hotter oil- but in either case we were presented with a very limp, sad fry. The beef on wecks tasted fine; not the warmest by any means but did have a nice taste. I think the texture would be improved if the meat was cut fresh to order, and not pre-cut and waiting in a hot tray holding container. Not a bad experience by any means, but I would have no reason to come back.
So... to start we waited 30min for a drink. Ordered our food and then ended up sitting inside at bar hoping to get served faster. Manager/cook was extremely rude and swearing and when we said Gee relax she got even angrier and was swearing. The cute new waitress kept apologizing and said she would be quitting. Horrible experience. Manager needs a new career
I heard so much about Swistons and how much everyone loves it there so I went there with my husband. Our order took over 30 minutes to get, His fries were cold, I ordered wings they werent very warm, they had very little sauce and no flavor. To top off the already bad experience, our waitress took a break for about 15 minutes to go outside and smoke (and not just a cigarette) which we could smell on her once she came to our table. That's disgusting and completely unacceptable especially for working in a restaurant. I definitely will not be back and wouldnt recommend going here.
Worst service ever. Went inside and waited to be taken care of. After 10 minutes of standing and waiting to be offered to be seated I was informed it was seat yourself. Sat outside for 15 more minutes and had to go in to find someone to give me a menu. When I finally got a menu, we waited and waited until a waitress finally came over. She rudely asked if we were taken care of. When we said no, she said what do you want and then disappeared. We never recieved our food and never saw or server again. If you're ever thinking of even trying this place I urge to find anywhere else because I believe you'll be much happier.
Pull up on our boat, tied up. Hubby went up and ordered all the food, we ate on the boat, knowing they knew we were there. I walked up to use the bathrm. They had locked the door. Didn't ever come ask if we needed anything. 4 dinners, no napkins, or horse radish, for RB Sammies. The menu said canal fest chicken souvlaki. It was not. We weren't happy.
Have been going to Swiston’s since 1968. Back then they had the best Beef on Weck, tasty, tender and juicy. Today, the beef on Weck is the Worst! It sits in the AuJus and simmers for hours until it is tasteless and tough. It went downhill over the past several years with new management. You cannot order your beef medium rare, it only is served well done. It’s a shame that nobody listens. The crowd gets a bit roughneck and the f bombs frequent. Service is hit and miss.
Sat at a table for 20 minutes. Absolutely no service, not even a drink order. Never go there again. Horrible
We were never waited on or even provided a menu. We sat down and were acknowledged but forgotten. Ended up leaving after 15 minutes. It was not crowded at all either. Big disappointment.
I was at Swiston's many years ago and loved the beef. Recently came back to the area and stopped there. The food was just ok. Service was terrible. The place was not crowded at all. Waited five minutes to be get the menus. Food came and had to wait again, this time for napkins and condiments. Another ten minutes and finally had to yell to the waitress behind the bar for our drinks. She was too busy watching "Friends" on the tv. She then screwed up our drink order which was only pop. Never again !!!
We drove the boat to this restaurant which is as pretty neat, but for a restaurant with 3 items on the menu they need to step it up. The waitress said the wings were good so we ordered 20 wings. The wings came out and they looked breaded. I asked her if they were breaded and she said no, they are just frozen. We also asked for them extra crispy and they were cold on the inside and gross.
Service was horrible. Server was on her phone at the bar and we could hear her in the inclosed patio. She never came back to check how the food was or ask if we needed refills. Onion rings were the best part.
Waited an 1 hour and 30 minutes for food and the they said their was 8 tickets in front of me most people were already eating. Would not recommend this place unless you have all night to wait
Full of liberal bartenders who berate the customers. Would avoid this place at all costs
