The best place you could go for the price. The stakes are genuinely decent. The price is fair for what you get. Salad bar, you get one pass with your meal. The atmosphere is amazing, It's a great old place. The service has always been great every time we've been, they are tentative to your needs, but not pesty. The place is clean and friendly. again for the price, you cannot beat it.
I have been eating here for years; never had a bad steak. Their chicken fry is also really good. It doesn't matter where you live, it's worth the drive.
The atmosphere is great and the food is great. We went there today for our lunch dinner the portions are so large it fills you for the day. We started with the mushroom appetizer and I had the 6oz. Ribeye w/baked potato and ordered steak medium rare and it was cooked perfectly and juicy and tender my partner had the seafood platter and it was huge. LG. Shrimp and catfish fillets and it came w/ a crab cake and it was the best crab cake I have eaten very moist and lots of crab in it the best I have ever eaten. I could have made a meal of them. The prices are very reasonable. If you want a great steak done right go to Murphy's. You won't be disappointed. Kudos to the chefs.
A great steak. I always get a 14 oz New York Strip. It was cooked perfectly with a great flavor. I regret I did not get a picture. The service was stellar. I can't recall his name but he was a very nice young man. We had everything we needed. Its rustic with class A food. Love that place!
If you want the quintessential Texas steakhouse, this is it. Steak dinner prices were competitive with HEB grocery store steak prices! Huge portions and consistently great food. Family friendly, good for groups or date night. Enough vegetarian and alternative options to cater to everyone.
As I drive aimlessly around America 🇺🇸 ... Joan at the Austin Visitor Center ask me if I like steak (silly question 😜), then said I had to go to Murphy's Steakhouse and it didn't disappoint! 😋 The steak was great and BRANDY (my waitress) was FANTASTIC! In the end she recommended the "Chocolate Explosion" for desert, SOOO GOOOOD! Cool thing it's in the middle of nowhere!!! The best! Highly recommend! ❤️
Our waitress was Ashlie, and she made our experience one of the best ones. My ribeye was cooked to perfection with the BEST seasoning. Ashlie took great care of us, making sure we had everything we needed. Our drinks kept coming on time. Once we were done, she recommended the banana pudding, AND let me tell you THAT PUDDING DIDN'T EVEN MAKE IT 10 MILES OUT. I WAS DONE BEFORE I HIT 71.
Old timey, "hole in the wall" country steakhouse. This is exactly what we were looking for! We loved it Headed from Fredericksburg to Houston for business, we wanted a decent meal and an experience. We got both. Murphy's is nestled in the heart of a tiny little town that felt like you were going back in time. Breathe in the clean air and take a few photos. It feels special here. Food, wine, beer, and salad bar did not disappoint. Mugs come out to you frosty! Goll, we love that touch! Steaks looked bigger than the 6oz and 12oz we ordered. And they cook them to order. (Us rare-meat eaters do not typically get rare, so thank you) Staff was great! Dark in there, just like a steakhouse should be. Taxidermy on the wall... Love it. Seat yourself with table service. Limited wine and beer selection, but good enough! Little lamps on the table and a menu that you can read if you don't have your readers 😜 Check it out! Enjoy the drive and the pines for a fresh little getaway.
While I had been once before, the Mrs hadn’t so we decided to take the trek from Shiner up to Winchester for lunch at Murphy’s. Very nice place with some ice cold Shiner beer on tap. I got the lunch special of chicken fried steak while the Mrs decided on a 6 oz ribeye. Boy howdy let me tell ya, neither one disappointed!! In fact we couldn’t believe her steak was a 6 oz since it looked twice the size (but we confirmed with waitress). It was seat yourself, but service was quick and friendly. Take that drive out to Winchester. You got this!!
A special place in the country where the steaks are great and all the extra sides will fill you up. Please be patient with the servers and the kitchen, as the place can get very busy. When it gets busy, everything slows down. It’s a large space, and all those customers that arrived before you are going to get their orders before you. Keep a smile on your face, have some of the salad bar and beans and drink some cold beer or a bottle or two of the secret wine at the very bottom of the wine list. Talk with your friends and family. Excellent food! Just be patient and considerate with everyone when you go through the door. It’ll be worth it.
This is a place I've been wanting to visit ever since my sister in law told me about it. After reading many of the reviews we made it a 'day trip' from Georgetown for lunch one day recently. It was just as quaint and delicious as advertised. The employees that work here are down to earth, folksy and friendly people who strive to offer the patrons a great meal. It's almost like stepping back in time. The Winchester post office is located inside the same building as the restaurant but was closed on the day we visited. This is a very old country style, charming atmosphere. I ordered the 8 oz. Rib Eye steak medium rare with a baked potato. All dinners come with one side and a trip to the salad bar and pinto bean pot. The salad bar was not overwhelming with offerings although it had all the right fresh ingredients to satisfy most veggie eaters and made a delicious first course. Like other reviewers have claimed, I'm sure my steak weighed more than 8 ounces. My wife ordered the 10 ounce sirloin but my steak was larger than hers. However, both were cooked to perfection. The only thing about the steaks here, they lack any seasoning before being cooked so they come to your table salt-free. When placing your order you have the option of adding different topping for an additional fee such as blackened seasoning, mushrooms, onions, shrimp, etc. Next time I might spring for the blackened seasoning. As it was, a little salt, pepper, and A1 steak sauce available on the table was the right addition to an otherwise semi-bland piece of charred meat. But I didn't have any problem putting my "8 oz.", more like 10-11 oz., steak away, although I was completely stuffed afterward.
In my search for the Best steakhouse near my residence, I had to try Murphy’s. I had driven by but this week was my first chance to come with my lady. It was an auspicious start to our evening. The hostess seemed aloof. Once seated, we placed our order with a waitress that seemed distracted and fidgety. After a short time, it was apparent to us that our waitress had bailed on us and several other tables. As luck would have it, a lovely lady named Trish picked up the slack on her birthday no less. She and the remaining waitresses really hustled and I credit them for their hard work on a Saturday evening. As far as our food was concerned, happy as a clam! I would highly recommend ordering the 5 piece chicken tenders as an appetizer for the table, especially for the excellent price. Great value! Some of the best tenders I’ve ever had and quite juicy. I had a medium rare ribeye. Was cooked to perfection. I will definitely be back and maybe check out the catfish special. Thank you Trish for saving our experience and probably many others. I highly recommend this place. Come out and support your local businesses and avoid chains!
After a couple of friends raved about this place, I decided a little road trip was in order. Drive from Austin was a bit over an hour, but VERY worth it! Murphy's was amazing! My 8 oz. sirloin was cooked to perfection, seasoned well, and a bigger slab of succulent steak than what I expected. Delicious baked potato, beans, and a good sized dinner salad (fresh, crispy and green) rounded out a wonderful meal. Our young waitress did a great job, checking on us periodically and brewing fresh coffee for us. We were served promptly, no long wait, and everything was clean and attractive. An awesome experience! Hoping to avoid crowds we showed up a bit before dinner time, but by the time we left somewhat after dark the restaurant was filling up. A meal like this could run you much higher elsewhere, and probably wouldn't be as tasty. If you like small-town restaurants in a historic setting, then a trip to Winchester needs to be on your to-do list. Definitely will return soon! Thanks for a great dining experience!

Was here with friends from Dallas and Houston and we had filets and they were totally adequate. Same with some fairly vanilla but still good sides! Nice country and vintage atmosphere as well!
Steaks are not PRIME but seasoned and grilled perfectly. Neat out of the way place in an historic building. We'll worth the drive. Scenery is great as well.
I'm surprised this place hasn't been featured in more travel or food shows. The historic building, taxidermy, low lighting, rotating dessert cabinet, and salad bar/bean bar combo feel like something out of a Cohen Brothers film. The steaks and onion rings are fantastic. This place is truly a strange and wonderful small town gem. If you are traveling off the beaten path, come here and have a steak.
Excellent home town restaurant with big portions and hearty fare. Be sure to make a reservation! I ordered a small burger and it was huge! My husband got the 8oz steak (I'm pretty sure it was bigger than that). They have REAL sweet tea! Good southern cooking and the steaks were done perfectly.

This is a brutally honest review. Let me break it down…Objectively. If you're looking to order out, you'll be happy with the experience … because the food is quite delicious. However, if you're looking to dine in… hopefully the experience differs from mine and more closely reflects the previous reviews. Maybe off day? Here's what went down: While ordering, while trying to order food: the waitress cut my mom mid sentence to insist that she take our drinks first, but then took the whole order after we let her know we knew what we wanted. It's all about posture, tone and tact. Had a waitress look directly at me raising my hand for a refill and carried on as if she never saw me. When we received our order, we questioned the portions based on the wording of the meal. Mom order a mini rib-eye and I ordered the ribeye sandwich. Hers was 9 bucks and mine was 11. We received the orders and noticed that the steaks had to be switched in the kitchen. I received what looked like the mini and she received what looked like a regular ribeye. When we asked the waitress about it she stated that everything is freshly cut which… didn't really answer our question and she seemed unimpressed with our logic. This leads us to believe that their logic is that the two pieces of bread made up for the loss of steak on my burger. So the dollar was for the bread and even if so, she paid 8 bucks and if I paid 10-11, take a dollar off and I still paid the same amount and was given less steak. It just didn't make sense. Then the waitress insisted on cleaning the table off while my mom was still eating and that killed her appetite and so we left and yeah. Now I understand if it was a packed restaurant and there was people lining at the door that she needed to clean the table preemptively but there were so many tables available and we were very clearly eating and I felt it was just in poor taste. This was also the waitress that cut us mid sentence to tell us that we will order our drinks first before we order our food.
Ive heard a lot of mixed reviews locally about this place, but I finally made it out a couple of weeks ago and the salad bar was great, the steak had a couple good bites but wasnt evenly seasoned, was cooked more than requested, and the piece of meat itself was only about half to maybe 3/4 actual edible ?meat and not fat. One server i saw taking plates at the table I was seated at without even checking if the people were done. I'll give them a second try, but not sure if ill order the steak again
Dear Murphy’s Steakhouse, I'm writing to share my experience at your restaurant on April 19, 2025. We've been loyal customers, making the trip from Austin, Texas, for our past three visits – all based on positive word-of-mouth recommendations. Today, however, marked a significant departure from our previous positive experiences. We arrived at 4:15 PM and were served promptly at 4:30 PM. While the steak was delicious, as it has always been, the service unfortunately fell drastically short of expectations. After ordering, our initial requests were met, but thereafter, our table remained uncleared, and we weren’t offered drink refills or checked on to see if we needed anything further. We dined surrounded by dirty dishes from our salad bar, a situation I've documented in the attached photographs. Our entire dining experience lasted only 21 minutes, ending at 4:51 PM. This wasn't simply a matter of inattentive service; it felt as though our patronage wasn't valued. We believe the waitress was named Mary Cassie (as per our receipt), but I'm unsure if this is correct. While we are committed to leaving a fair tip that reflects the value of our food, in no way does this reflect the service quality we received and deserved. I'm hesitant to say whether I will return. While your restaurant boasts excellent food, the inconsistent service is a major concern. My hope is that this feedback prompts a review of your service standards, ensuring all customers – regardless of their perceived tipping potential – receive the level of attention and care they deserve. We chose your restaurant because of its reputation; we would appreciate your response and efforts to address this matter.
Nice steak place near Smithville in Winchester, Tx. Onions, service and atmosphere were excellent. Steaks were average at best; tough and fatty. I will recommend Murphy's if you're nearby Winchester since it is a unique experience. We enjoyed it but just wished for a tad better steak quality. I did finish it so there's that too.

We've have eaten here several times before, it's a destination ride from Sugar Land. They always had outstanding food and service. Not sure what happened, this time. The chicken fried steak was dark and tough as a boot. The fried catfish was also "dark" fried, and the sides came out cold. Service was also slow, not unfriendly but not the usual happy to serve you. Hoping they didn't change ownership. Maybe they just had a bad day cooking. Will give it another try, next time we're out for a ride.
We have come here a few times. They're not as good as the 1st time by far! I ordered a 12oz ribeye medium-rare and it came out Totally Rare & Bloody‼️ We had a party of about 20 people & EVERYONE that ordered a steak, ordered medium rare & they ALL were cooked differently. There were 3, that was ok with their steak. EVERYONE else was disappointed! I've NEVER ordered a steak & it be this RED & TOUGH‼️ It was AWFUL to say the least. The cook was ALL over the place with these steaks. I will NOT come here for a steak, EVER AGAIN‼️NOT to mention, I had to argue with the waitress about the Oz I ordered just for it to ALL BE A BIG DISAPPOINTMENT & SHE WAS WRONG...😡 The fish taste like IT WAS FRIED IN old burnt grease...just ONE BIG DISAPPOINTMENT‼️
