Digging up my old Gmail account just to ask this: Does anyone know what happened to this restaurant? This was my absolute favorite restaurant, I think about that ema datsi every day! It is a tremendous loss if they are permanently closed.

Following a review from RighteousEats, I decided to visit Zhego. This was my first experience with Bhutanese food. I will admit, I was a little cautious about trying the foods as I knew nothing about it. Quickly after viewing their menu, my fears were quickly calmed. The food was amazing. The freshness of the herbs and the meats and the spices, you could taste it in every bite. I tried Geop Paa, the tripe was so well seasoned and tender. The beef momos were delicious and plentiful, eight steaming momos to a plate, more than enough to share. The Phaksa Bayzum was the most perfectly cooked pork I've had in a while, it was juicy and tender. I recommend Zhego NYC to anyone willing to try new cuisines and looking for a new favorite local spot.

This is a Bhutanese restaurant… But if you’re familiar with Tibetan, and or Nepalese cuisine… this restaurant, and its food items will be familiar… I always like to have the hot butter drink or butter tea…. Here it was a little too salty for me… But I think it’s because of the butter or maybe the milk… I understand that it’s very expensive to use yak milk… So the substitute would be generally any milk… But I don’t know if that had an impact with the taste… I love the condiment azay… it can be very spicy similar to Mexican tomatillo. On the menu there are several creamy sauces try them they’re so good… And of course the national dish Emadasi (spelling?). I love any dish that contains buckwheat noodles… And here they have it with egg and onions… And peppercorn… They have preserved beef and pork stirfried… They have green beans and red chili with tomato… And they have many sweet items… My favorite is the Doma poni (spelling?). It’s betel nut. The prices are very competitive… The dishes are between $7 ti $17 . The place is small… And I think there’s maybe one or two servers so be patient… But remember good things come to those who wait!

Tenzin Sonam

The customer service was excellent really made me feel welcomed. I’m a very picky eater and I usually only eat sha momo(beef) but something about the cheese momo I fell in love! Also the momo sauce was delicious, it was very spicy! They don’t play around. Thank you for having me!

Cozy spot with delicious food. Lots of great vegetarian options. Fan of the buckwheat noodles and cheese momos. They are very generous with the side of rice that comes with entrees.

First time trying bhutanese food and it was delicious. Really enjoyed the beef tripe, pork belly and the butter milk. I would love to go back and try other dishes. The restaurant is small with about 6 tables inside and couple of tables outside. Service was great and staff was friendly. Pretty affordable too.

M

Excellent Bhutanese food, very home-style cooking, great flavor in the chicken stew and the pork ribs. Juicy Beef momo. They have wide variety of vegetarian menu. All the meals come with rice and some sort of soup. Price is just right, and you feel satiated after the meal. Not many seats, I think they can only fit 4 groups indoors and 2 outdoors.

R
Reed Wada

There are no words to describe how delicious the food was. The restaurant itself is very small, but a comfortable environment. The staff were incredibly nice. Definitely worth the subway ride from 34th St. It is a must-try if you are at all interested in Bhutan or Bhutanese cuisine.

Bhutanese cuisine was totally new to us, and we love it ! Had no idea what to expect, but this did not remind us of south Asian, East Asian or southeast Asian cuisines (and I lived and traveled in SE Asia for a very long time). This was unlike anything I have ever had. Generous portions of spicy, delicious food (2 dishes was more than enough for us) with friendly service and priced really fairly. Would happily go back.

Just come here. You know you've never had Bhutanese food before. You know you don't even know where Bhutan is. So stop pretending to consider, get on that 7 train, and come here. The trek only seems daunting because you don't know how hard actual Bhutan is to get to (seriously, look it up...it's mission impossible). Get everything. If you can't, get these: - Ema Datsi: The national dish of Bhutan. Crunchy peppers breaded in cheese. How can you not? - Cheese Momo: Dumplings got a glow up, and now they come with dairy. Yes, please. - Sikam Paa: If you like thinly sliced pork belly and daikon soaked in delicious chili sauces, you've found your dish here. - Shakam Shukam Datsi: Like eating chunky beef jerky stir-fried in the best white chili sauce ever. What's white chili, precious? Come here and find out. - Goep Paa: I assume that if you've come this far for this cuisine, beef tripe is not going to daunt you. Good. You've leveled up to this dish and can enjoy the most kiu kiu (chewy-tender) tripe this side of dim sum. - Jangbuli: Maybe the one miss, for me. Stir-fried hand-pulled noodles in various seasonings. Great texture, not enough flavor. Bland, compared to its companions. Oh yeah, they serve butter tea here--so if you've ever wondered what yak milk tastes like hot (it keeps me up most nights), you can enjoy a cup here for $3. Small indoor seating, but now that it's warm times, they have several tables outside for parties of 2-4 that can be rearranged for bigger groups.

For Bhutanese food in NYC, this is the spot. Nestled in a tiny street for seating for maximum of 10 indoors and a bit outside, for a date night or a group of friends 4 or less ideally. Staff was friendly and a reservation isn’t required but ideal to ensure you get a spot and don’t need to wait. The meal started with the beef momo which were so delicious and juicy. The meat was tender and the flavor of the oils and flour come through so fragrantly. The noodles were also a great pick perfect ‘q’ of chewy texture in each bite. The beef with strong beans and the veggie spinach were also had tons of flavor. Per person there is a portion of rice and soup so one dish a person and a few momo should be more than enough for the average person. Definitely be back in the future to try other items! Menu has lot of vegetarian options as well so don’t shy away!

Such an outstanding place, and even more amazing that they’ve only been open for a month! This kind of quality is usually only found at the places that have been around for a while. Their Shakam Datsi and Shamu Datsi were both amazing. The cheese momo, though, were fantastic. The cheese is locally produced and really adds to the flavor and quality. I also have to recommend their butter tea, it was so nice on a cold night. Before we left, the owner treated us with some Khapse, a sweet biscuit made for Losar! Everyone was so kind and the food was perfect. Such a cozy place, definitely give it a try when you can!

New small Bhutanese restarant in the area. The space is tiny, a large shelf packed with kitchen equipment storage right next to our table. Crispy rice was a good appetizer. The momos are pretty plain as custom so must use the spicy dipping sauce for the full experience. Cheese peppers and chickens were intriguing. Ribs and egg noodles filled us up. The owner is very friendly and hospitable, must try.

First time trying Bhutanese food. Momo with an onion filling with cottage cheese were doughy and substantial and addictively delicious. A hand pulled noodles was blobs of a noodles dumpling more than any traditional hand pulled noodles. Last was a datzi with cottage cheese, cabbage in a rich broth with lots of pieces of dried beef. Service was sweet and caring. Fabulous food, super friendly waiter, great value.

Spiceeee. Tasteeee. Satisfying. Do not miss dessert. It's like cinnamon toast but on cheese curds. If you like butter you'll love the buttered tea. The salsa adds that bit of tangy freshness that makes it perfect. The people are 5 star too.

Delicious food! We tried the cheese momos, jangbuli, shakam shukam datsi, and kopi fry. The cheese momos were so much more flavorful than I was expecting based off of the name and I definitely recommend getting them to help tone down some of the spice of some of the other dishes.

Came for an early Friday dinner and left super satisfied. The tripe (goep paa) was rich and hearty, the cheese momos were like a good comfort dish, and the jangbuli was the standout. Such thick chewy noodles with an amazing peppercorn kick - deceptively simple and just perfect!

A must try hole in the wall with delicious and authentic Bhutanese food! Everything was very flavorful and pleasantly spicy. We enjoyed the ema dasi (green chilies with cheese, a national dish), sikam shukam datsi (air dried pork cooked in white chili, cheese, tomato, onion scallion), phaksa bayzum (tender pork belly stir fried with tomato, garlic, chili powder, red chili), norsha paa (beef stir fry with potato, ginger, tomato, onion), the beef momo (8 come in a serving, with two sauces to dip in), and the butter tea. All dinner options come with red rice, and some cheesy soup. There is a large vegetarian menu and many delicious options for everyone. These are some of the best momos I’ve had in Queens, and I could eat an entire bowl of the momos, sikam shukam datsi or phaksa bayzum and lick the plate. I can not decide what my favorite thing was, everything was so yummy. The prices were VERY reasonable like 8 momos for 10, and most dishes are $10-15.

Hidden gem offering a genuine taste of Bhutan. This charming restaurant provides a delightful escape from the city's fast pace, with its delectable dishes. The ambiance, on the other hand, could use some improvement. The decor felt a bit shabby and didn’t reflect the cozy, inviting atmosphere one might expect from a place serving traditional cuisine. Despite these minor drawbacks, the overall experience was positive, making it a solid 4 out of 5. I highly recommend for anyone looking to explore the distinctive and delicious offerings of Bhutanese food in the New York City.

Very small place. Food runs on the flavor packed and salty side. Not spicy even though it looks spicy. Food comes with rice and soup on the side.

If you're looking for a fast dining experience, alcohol, or space, this may not be your first choice. The cuisine is carb-heavy, fatty, and spicy; so Tasty. Also rare. But there were tiny flies which made me feel uncomfortable about returning.

I had been Zhego Bhutanese cuisine it’s been just while ago, taste wise good but food quantity is very less. if u compare then their prize so I felt little disappointed, I order shakam they gave me 4 or 5 pcs too small same size like French fry, prize was $17.99 I think it’s expensive 😃😁

Friendly staff and service but portion sizes are really small for the price. Maybe it's just that Bhutanese cuisine isn't really to my palate but I thought the food was mediocre at best. The Sikam Paa was very salty and there was so much fat on the pork belly that it was barely edible. Beef momos were good but honestly enjoyed the complimentary soup more. Tables inside were also very small so wasn't the most pleasant dining experience. Don't think I would come back but glad to at least try it...

i’m really baffled by all the positive write ups for this place… we love himalayan cuisine so we were excited to try something similar but we were very disappointed. I should caveat by saying that we only ordered vegetarian options (which they have a separate menu for) so maybe meat eaters will have better luck. maybe they were having an off night, but we were barely able to finish and left feeling unsatisfied, unsettled and hungry. the cheese momos were OK, everything we took a bite out of and left half eaten.
