Such a gem for Guizhou food—everything here is seriously delicious! The vibe is amazing, and I love the tableware, seating, and decor. The little lamp on the table makes it feel super warm and cozy, like dining at home. Every dish hits the spot, but the sour soup fish is my absolute favorite—it tastes just like the authentic Guizhou version I remember from years ago. Great service too, and parking is easy. Definitely coming back!
Tucked next to a hotel in Alhambra is a restaurant serving Guizhou / Miao style cuisine. I myself am not knowledgeable about this type of Chinese food but Leo provided excellent service and knowledge regarding it. If I’m remembering correctly, the regions distinct mountain peppers are pressed into an oil that provides (in my description) an intense almost citrusy flavor, as if Thai tom yum had a baby with Szechuan spice in a surprisingly refreshing yet hot and savory soup base. It results in an addictive flavor that I’ve honestly never had before! The decor and ambiance were fantastic as well and I appreciated the eclectic artworks strewn about the restaurant. Would definitely love to come back and try more regional specialties.
This was my first time trying it. The modern art 🎨 style, Japanese and Korean pop music, and Chinese cuisine create a subtle and unique atmosphere. The food was quite delicious, and the fish was fresh, tender, and flavorful. The egg foo young was my second favorite; it was very smooth. The Sichuan beef was my first favorite, just a little spicy. The potato pancakes were average, delicious 😋. The owner was very nice and attentive, and even gave me a free bowl of rice 🍚
There was plenty of seating and no wait when we arrived for lunch on Wednesday. You order everything with an iPad at your table. The service was fast and friendly. There's plenty of parking behind the restaurant next to the hotel including covered parking and an upper level. We ordered: Miao Sour Soup with Fish Fillets: Very uniquely flavored tomato-based soup with pieces of white fish, mushrooms, lotus root, bean sprouts, seavweed, scallions, and other vegetables. It had a very strong lemongrass flavor. It looks spicy but it was not at all, as think the red is from tomatoes. I've never had this combination of flavors before so it was definitely worth trying. The soup is served in a large metal dish with a flame keeping it hot. It's probably enough to serve 4 or 5 people. Potato Pancakes: An appetizer with 3 small potato pancakes which were crispy outside and kind of like mashed potatoes inside. Good. Came with a little bit of cabbage and chili powder. Scallion Pancake: I had thought this would be a different take than the usual but it was pretty standard, not a lot of flavor. Stir-Fried Crispy Pork With Diced Potato: Fried diced potatoes with small fried pork bits, chilies, scallions, garlic and ginger. Mostly potatoes. Just slightly spicy. Overall, a unique restaurant to check out if you're interested in trying different kinds of Chinese food.
Hengry modern Chinese Cuisine is the place to go I was so impressed — the service was wonderful, the staff were kind, and the atmosphere inside the restaurant is beautiful. We ordered a few dishes and every single one was amazing. I totally recommend this place!
What an exceptional dining experience.. wow. Came here for the first time today after randomly stumbling across this new restaurant we noticed on yelp. After seeing the mouthwatering photos we decided to make the 1.5hr commute, we had a feeling this place was going to be GOOD. Pulling up to the restaurant, the exterior was unassuming and simple (love that the entryway was accessible with a ramp btw). Upon walking inside we were blown away by the interior. Walls adorned with a curated mix of stunning pop artwork, and a colorful theme of mid century modern seating provided a cozy and eclectic atmosphere. I’ve been speaking so much about the interior space but the food definitely delivered. The classic Guizhou flavors (family recipes) blended with a fusion of Szechuan were addicting. I enjoyed meeting and talking with Leo, owner and creative visionary behind this modern day dining experience. Definitely ask him about his story if you have the chance to talk with him, so unique. Also, his arm tattoo is as stunning as his restaurant space. Definitely recommending this place to all my friends and family and to all who are stumbling across this review! You are in for an incredible sensory experience dining at Hengry.
I had the chicken fried rice, stir fried pork belly with jalapeños, fried tofu balls, & the chicken & cabbage pot stickers. I absolutely LOVED it!! The pork belly with with jalapeños was a pleasant surprise. AMAZING flavors!!! I will be back. I love the vibe. Totally unexpected pleasurable experience. The staff is super friendly. I felt right at home as a foodie!! If I could give more than 5 stars, I would!! Yum!!!!
We had an amazing meal at Hengry Guizhou Cuisine! The flavors were bold, authentic, and incredibly satisfying. The spicy and sour dishes really stood out—especially the sour soup and the chili chicken. Everything was well-seasoned without being too greasy. The staff was friendly, and the restaurant was clean and comfortable. Highly recommended if you’re looking to try something unique and delicious. We’ll definitely be back!
As someone from Chongqing, I absolutely love sour and spicy flavors—and Hengry delivers them perfectly. The dishes are fresh, flavorful, and full of that tangy heat I crave. Every bite reminded me of the taste of home. Highly recommended!
What a great hidden gem!!! Didn’t realize how close this restaurant is to home. We came as the last customers of the day and we were so excited to eat here as they are open pretty late. We were greeted warmly by the owner, it’s super clean, has creative decor, and the food was so fresh and authentic with extensive menu options. Most importantly, we were not rushed and got to enjoy our Chinese Valentine’s Day to the fullest.
I came in on an unexpectedly busy evening. Everyone was working very hard. The food was fresh and delicious. The owner, Leo, was so kind and working just as hard as everyone else. There’s a very warm family feel to the restaurant and the lighting, art and furniture create a lovely ambience. This is a true family business and it feels that way. The chef is incredible. Guizhou food can be incredibly spicy, and I like that they will make it just that way for those who can take it, yet tone it down for people who prefer it a bit milder.
The food is very authentic Chinese Guizhou cuisine. The tomatoes fish soup is amazing. And the dry pot mushroom is my favorite! The restaurant vibe is very artsy and good for small group dinning or dating meals.
I got the chance to try this hidden gem in Alhambra. Everything that my group and I got to try from the menu was fantastic, including but not limited to the fruit salad, the crispy pork and the sweet corns with green pepper and tomato. The ambiance was great. Big, wide windows were letting in a lot of natural light, and the setup and arrangement of the tables was amazing. The whole restaurant is decorated in a very particular, unique and colorful way that gives it a unique vibe. Service was also top-tier. Highly recommended place for some unique side of Chinese cuisine.
The home style authentic Chinese food from the southern region was phenomenal. They took such care with not only the dishes but also the friendly service to make sure we were happy and well fed. What’s refreshing experience. I’m def going back!
Really enjoyed my meal at Hengry! The food was tasty and not heavy, and the vibe was chill. Service was super friendly too. A nice spot to grab something good without feeling rushed. I’d come back for sure!
The flavors are truly authentic — rich, aromatic, and with just the right kick of spice! The ambiance is excellent, with a strong artistic vibe. The walls are adorned with art pieces from the owner’s personal collection, adding a unique and cultured touch to the space.
This is an incredible dining experience. The interior is beautiful and I could stare at every art piece for hours. The food is amazing and they even went above and beyond by accommodating their dishes to my friend and I’s allergies. Highly recommend anyone to try out this restraunt and see for yourself!
This Guizhou restaurant was such a delightful surprise! The environment is incredibly cozy and thoughtfully designed, with lots of beautiful art installations on the walls. Everything was very clean and well-maintained. The owner was super friendly and welcoming. We ordered the Nanjing salted duck and sour soup pig trotters, both dishes were so flavorful and authentic. The flavors brought us right back to China. We really enjoyed our meal here and will definitely come back!

It’s a great place with an elevated Chinese experience. There’s comfortable couches, beautiful lighting, and stylish dish ware. The food is unique and tasty, although it leans still on the heavy side. However, the sourness that is a characteristic of the Guizhou specialty kept my appetite up and going and now I am way too stuffed. My favorites were Guizhou Spicy Chicken, Fish-Fragrant Shredded Pork, and Spicy Sour Soup with Fish.
As a true Guizhou person, this is as authentic as you can get for Guizhou cuisine. Amazing flavors.
Yes! It really is all that! Ambiance, service and food all 5 stars! The ambiance is really cool, I don't know how to describe it. Funky art, and modernist sofas and chairs to sit on. Very nice vibe! The owner recommended we try the fish soup - it's native to his home region. It was fantastic! Of all the dishes we had, this one really met the portion size for family style well. Everything else was delicious. Fried rice, scallion pancake, king pao chicken, and I can't remember the rest but it was all really good! And he was very informative, the service attentive, Friendly but not over bearing. We were there past close and never felt rushed. Group of 5, we each ordered an item, plus we had an appetizer and a few sodas. $134. Not bad for a place this memorable!
High rating both on yelps and Google Maps.. hip ambience .. lots of original arts displays in restaurants.. first time eating this kind of Chinese cuisines from China.. must eat is the sour soup with fish .& lemon grass is the bomb! Ditto with kung pao chicken. It is different than other Sichuan dishes.. it is juicy !
House fried rice definitely is my favorite! The manager recommends it as one of the best seller, and it’s was hearty and unique — like a cross between stir-fried rice and a comfort stew, full of rich, savory, and slightly sweet flavors. The miao soup fish fillets with tender fish and a naturally tangy broth. That said, the mujiangzi oil was overpowering and masked a bit of the broth’s freshness, also the sour flavor is too light to taste. The service was attentive, and the space was clean and comfortable.
