Loved their spinach burek. I wanna come back and try the others!
Tasty authentic burek, the best I've ever had!!! Always comes hot, straight from the oven. Meat burek, cabbage burek and potato burek are the best. I like their new individual size option. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
My coworkers got me food from here and it was stuuupid fresh and delicious. Gotta try the cheese pie or w.e it’s called
I've been going to Djerdan ever since they opened in Astoria, and it's by far the best burek place you can find in the city. They had other locations in the city, but this is IMO, the best one. Service is fast and the food is amazing. The pleskavica is pretty much the same as I remember it as a child, and the cheese burek and home-make yogurt combo is the best. I'd go there for a quick bite or for a wholesome dinner anytime.
Great traditional Balkan food. We loved the shopska salad and cevapi. Burek was also tasty. Best part was chatting with the owner and hearing his story!
If you haven't eaten a burek before, you're really missing out on something special. Even in New York they aren't easy to find but Djerdan serves them up perfectly. Put simply, a burek is phyllo dough with your choice of interesting fillings. We had beef and it was awesome. Be aware that the "slice" you order will be the size of a bicycle seat so plan accordingly. They also make a wide range of sweets like baklava which of course go incredibly well with the burek. Great food at great prices!
First things first, this in not a Turkish, but a Bosnian establishment. There's a difference - the dough sheets are hand pulled, slightly thicker, the cheese is not the salty feta style and the pies are hearty and delicious. Try the homemade yoghurt for a taste of the real thing (as opposed to supermarket varieties). The small backyard garden does not match the chic decor of newer establishments, though in nice weather is an oasis of calm.
Pitas were so good. Ended up buying few frozen ones which came out perfect. However the price is steep for small 6pieces for $13. Other than that, everything else was perfect.
Delicious and authentic. I keep coming back
Whenever visiting Astoria, I always made sure to stop at this delightful restaurant. The shopska salad, cevapi, and burek are delicious. Don't forget to end the meal with a Turkish coffee and slice of baklava.
Fabulous authentic Bulgarian food. The beef, cheese and spinach pie appetizers are great as was the goulash and meat with beans. Desserts looked great but didn't have room. Next time.
I love Djerdan. Their meat burek is great; super crisp and flaky, and their cevapi is delicious. I do not understand how something so simple can consistently be so good. Yogurt drink puts the many ayrans of Steinway St. to shame!
Burek is great, delicious, they have their own brand yogurt and it’s the best, staff is extremely kind and the overall experience is pleasant, will come again!
They served the best European Burek in NYC! We go there at least weekly to pick up the Bureks for our Sunday European brunch at home. They served other European platters. Small restaurant but good service. The price is reasonable. Definitely recommended!!
Excellent burek and cepavi. Selection of Balkan beers and wines. Very nice garden with outdoor seating in the back. Skip the Russian salad though - too watery with too much mayo.
Wow wow wow wow wow! This is the REAL DEAL Bosnian food. Our Cevapi (incredible Ajvar), Shropska Salad and Begova / Bey Soup brought back many fond memories of Sarajevo. Just delicious! Friendly, helpful service!
My first time visiting and the food was #1. Authentic Bosnian dishes from the burek to the cevape, especially the baklava. Fast service and the lovely server I spoke to was warm and inviting!
We decided to try this place cause it was the only one close to our apartment in queens. The restaurant is tiny, very pleasant, tidy, well kept. Starter were really delicious, Main dish (mixed grill) were tasty. Don’t miss baclava sweets, and Turkish Coffee.
If you heard about burek, traditional savory pie from Balkan region, this is the place in NYC where you need to try it. The blend of crusty filo dough and ingredients is perfect! Also try get the drinkable yogurt for a complete experience. You can also get your burek to go or even frozen so you can make it yourself. But if you don't know how to do it, just eat it there, they do it properly. Interior breathes with Balkan vibe and staff is friendly and attentive. Overall great place for one specialized dish like burek is.
For someone who lives four-hour flight from the nearest burek shop, this was a literal dream come true. That burek was more than correct, even though slightly different in its structure to what I am used to (microregional differences). The Turkish coffee, traditionally served, tested like nostalgia. And let us not forget that in-house made yogurt. And the only reason why I did not address the sweets section was that this was already second breakfast. Thank you, Djerdan Burek!
Just amazing food and super sweet staff. I got food for take out for a central park picnic and they packed everything nicely. We got cevapi that were made to perfection, as well as burek with cheese and meat, and a salad. This was enough for 6 people and we had a lot of leftovers. Cant wait to come here again.
This quaint tiny restaurant has authentic burek. The server was honest about the time it would take to deliver the food we wanted to order and therefore we were able to change our order to accommodate our schedule. We experienced a very clean environment nice atmosphere (although florescent light are a vibe kill) and delicious food. Not fancy but wholesome. Thanks for a healthy portion!
Traditional Eastern European cuisine at its finest! Moussaka, stuffed peppers, Shopska salad, 3-4 different kinds of burek. I highly recommend this place!
I stopped by Djerdan Burek Astoria and had the meat burek and cheese burek. Both were absolutely delicious, and the yogurt complemented them perfectly. The authentic flavors were truly satisfying. Now, whenever I’m craving this type of food, I find myself coming back here often. I highly recommend it for anyone wanting to enjoy some delicious burek!
I absolutely loved this place! It is in the smaller side. It may appear to be more of a takeout restaurant that has six tables available for those that may want to stay, but don’t be deceived! The food was absolutely delicious! I decided to try new entrees and I was not disappointed. I went for dinner only, but their of desserts certainly look tempting! I will certainly be back to test more of the menu. The Burek pies coming out of the oven looked amazing, so I’ll definitely have to go back to sample all burek options!
The cheese and spinach bureks were awesome. First Bosnian burek that I've had in years and I loved the texture. I'd love to come back and try some cevapi and other dishes.
Cevapi and Chicken Soup. What else can you ask in a cold winter? Well, pita bread and service is great too!
Hands down the best ćevapi in NYC — the closest thing to real Sarajevo-style ćevapi. Juicy, perfectly seasoned, soft inside, with that authentic Balkan flavor you just don’t find elsewhere.
I keep ordering the Swirl pie beurek with beef and onion. So crispy and incredibly delicious. I also tried their cevapi and it was really really good.
Went there with friends from the Balkans because we felt like eating something from that part of the world. The restaurant is very unpretentious but in the same time the food is delicious and very affordable. The Burek pie is a must try. We also shared the Cevapi (traditional small beef kebabs) and Pljeskavica. Will definitely go back.
This place offers very authentic Eastern European food. We tried several appetizers, Turkish coffee, and desserts. The flavors were truly authentic, and the prices were reasonable. If you're looking to experience Eastern European cuisine, this restaurant is a great choice. Additionally, there are some grocery stores nearby selling Eastern European cheeses, sausages, and snacks, allowing you to continue savoring the flavors of Eastern European cuisine and various ethnic dishes at home.
Delicious! My husband and I stumbled upon this place when in Astoria for fun exploring and we were hungry. Little hole in the wall, but so glad we went here for lunch. We shared the platter (enough for 2) , a sopska salad (yum) and 2 Burek sticks (1 each). We also got dessert, the wafer pie + krempita. With 2 drinks, came out to $45. Cant complain!
The portions are HUGE!!! The food is mostly really tasty. We have a lot of choices in this neighborhood. My four vs five stars is because the baklava wasn't ...great. It tasted like it was out of the fridge maybe ...old...not particularly big. eh. We have choices. The Burek was not what I was expecting. This is more of a greek stlye - I think they told me they are Bosnian. It is NOT Turkish Burkek, however. The salad was big enough for two (we each got one, we didn't know). BUT - you will easily take half of it with you. I will go back!
Burek Spinach slice was dry. But, meat slice was good as expected. Only thing that was strange is the slices were not warmed up before serving, unlike the best Burek restaurant I visited in the Bronx (Dukagjini Burek)
Burek is an item that is a crowd pleaser across the board and Djerdan delivers on excellent burek and other Balkan staples. I give the burek, especially the spinach, a 10/10. Flaky, flavorful, and filling...this is as good as it gets. The meat and cheese burek are also solid A options and it's worth ordering as many varieties as you can if you're not rolling solo so bring a friend and two and get in on as much goodness as you can. The cevapi and other meat options here are good, but not great so stick to the item that is in the name of the establishment and be wowed with burek perfection! They also have several desserts and all are worth trying!
Local place with Balkan cuisine. Burek is the best quality in the whole neighborhood. And it's quite afordable: $6.50 per piece. There are several types: with meat, cheese, potatoes or spinach. Handmade filos. Strongly recommend!
I bought burek and yoghurt today and it was good, but tulumbe was horrible, the juice in tulumbe was made with 0 knowledge about that or recklessly, anyhow, I ate burek twice, yoghurt is authentic and reaaally good. Eat burek and avoid tulumbe
I love Djerdan. Used to live on the opposite corner and it was the go-to place for burek and delicious food. However, I remember better times. I remember when the burek actually had filling inside, and the display shelves were actually displaying some of the food. Every time I go to Astoria, I stop by. This time however, was disappointing. The burek pie I bought was pretty much just layers of dough with minimal, almost non existent filling. The display was virtually empty, with only two sad deserts sitting inside. I’ll give it the benefit of a doubt, and try again next time I am in Astoria, but I was disappointed this time.
The food was good, but nothing exceptional. The prices were quite fair and the burek slice was huge! I’d consider going back but wouldn’t go out of my way to go there.
Balkan food: here can be hit or miss...I had Thursday special, roast veal bit meat was not the best. Also their veal soup used to be much better. Cake " tulumbe" was dry. But their "burek" with cheese was excellent.
The food is OK, NOT the Best, but is OK. The place it's self has been renovated. The women in the Kitchen " Chefs " are amazing great. The waitress are Not so pleasant, that's a problem. When you ask them for anything they seem to not like it and often they don't answer, but when it comes to tipping they seem to want the 20%. That's NOT how it should be. Tipping is provided based on the Service and NOT on the quality of food. This particular waitress (see the photo) has always a "chowing gum" and when she talks to people it doesn't look good. Wish you best of luck Djerdan, you have been around for a while but you should check on your staff at times. Giving it 3 stars just for the food, NOT for the rest.
Advertised as "the best burek in town" - burek standards are pretty low in NYC then. It wasn't horrible, but not exactly the tasty burek I'm used to either. It was dry and very crispy, as opposed to juicy and soft. The krem pita (cream slice) dessert was underwhelming as well, unfortunately. The people were nice though and I would still come back to try some other dishes.
The food is alright here, with good burek but lackluster entrees. There is a lot of food on the plates - you're not going to go hungry - but the prices aren't entirely reflective of the quality. A full meal for two can cost almost fifty dollars, and that's without adding drinks. The service was also particularly slow, more a sign of being understaffed than incompetent, and it was unclear how the patrons were expected to pay (which I have come to understand is at the counter). Worth a visit for the cheese pie, but probably not the first choice for a dinner.
Great food, homie food, original Serbian food! Burek, cevapi, gulas all of those are the best! Definitely one of my favorite places to eat my home country food! I have to add one thing, "sopska salad" needs to be better and its serving needs to be better. What I would recommend is to take out the lettuce, cut the cucumbers and tomatoes in bigger pieces, and serve the salad in a bowl instead of plate. Traditional salads are not served in plate, they are served in bowls. Also, keep the vegetables cold and served salad fresh. This is advice only.
Why is the food sometimes cold? I’ll never understand do you guys make all of the to go orders in the morning and microwave them later ? Mashed potato’s cold in the center but gravy is hot. The weirdest food experience
The young lady at the counter was not welcoming or even friendly. The meat-pie was just ok, atmosphere was rundown and tired I don’t see a reason to return there
First of all, DIRTY. Tables sticky, full of other peoples crumbs even though no one was there. The displays are also grimy. I purchased cevapi which were good, but I wont visit again because its unsanitary, place is perfect if you want to get sick. Also the girl at the register confused my order with a takeout, then acted upset that I pointed it out. It's true that they read you at the door and if you dont speak their language you'll feel the less than stellar treatment. I'm skipping next visit.
What happened, Djerdan?! One star for nostalgia and how awesome your burek used to be! The slice used to have the perfect ratio of filling and the dough was homemade and crispy on the outside. Now, you serve factory made dry pieces of cardboard. Why would I come and eat at Djerdan when I can easily bake frozen pies at home?! You used to stand apart because you served great burek but not anymore compared to all the cheese pies made with bad filo dough at random coffee houses in Astoria and beyond.
This review is in response to management’s poor reply to a review left my a customer, Sam D. Who called one of their staff members “illiterate” and a “bozo”. This name calling should not be accepted by Djerdan Burek. I will not support businesses who allow their staff members to be mistreated or bullied by customers in-person or online. Please take this constructive feedback to management and implement as soon as possible.
Very disappointing their cheese Burek had absolutely no taste at all seems like they just put cheap cheese inside no salt no egg no nothing very blah ...meat burek was full of onion no taste it has that very strong and sour smell of beef not tasty at all definitely not worth the price I wasn’t impressed at all! They lack of seasoning is very noticeable. I should of just ordered from Sarajevo or Ukus and saved me some money 🤦🏼♀️
I am a long customer, today's minced meat pie was very bad, I told this to the staff but they did not care.
We from Bosnia know what pita is suppose to taste like. Pita in Djerdan use to taste really good but not anymore. It use to have nice crisply dough with nice and decent amount of spinach, potatoes or cheese. Now days all is there is un untaste dough where the filling is barely there. What happened?! Not going there anymore
Too expensive for baked qebapas, one single small salad one tomatoes and 1/4 of cucumber and little cheese $16 EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE FOR it’s cheap food served.
Their meat taste like rubber, as if it was taken out from an old shoe sole and microwaved. The mix grill is $23 and doesnt even weigh half a pound. Tread carefully.
I can see that people are really cutting others some slack with everything going on in the world. In saying that I used to enjoy this place. Now, not so much... I'll take my money elsewhere if management thinks its appropriate to reprimand employees based on one Karen (Sam D) who is ignorant enough to think that every person they encounter must speak English first. I mean, we are talking about an international restaurant in Queens. A place where there are more immigrants than Americans to begin with.
Crust of the burek was good but amount of filling was not enough. It feels a bit dry. My main problem is not with the burek but with the attitude. I am asked to leave tip while leaving the place. I ordered myself at the cashier, after eating I returned my plates so why do I have to tip you. You didn’t even seat me. If you are going to ask for a tip, you should greet and seat your customer, then take their order in the table and collect empties. You did none of these and still asked for tip when I am leaving?? Never coming back again.
I drove 2 and a half hours to get to this place. As I was driving I called and placed the order 2 meat pies and some other stuff. When I get there the lady in front only gives me one. I told her I ordered 2, she said i did not hear 2. I heard 1. I said how long it takes to make another one? She said 30min. I sad nvm just give me the one pie. Her customer service skills need improvement. Turns but the byrek was not even worth the drive. Very crispy and greesy. I did not like the byrek at all. I don’t live in NY, we only come here for the food but this time we wanted to try this one place. I will never visit this place again. I will stick the Bronx one. Tony and Tina’s is the best.
poor hygiene. it looks like place hasn’t been cleaned for years. food and grime all over the floors. i bought a spinach burek which i am very familiar with. it was clearly a refrigerated old spinach burek, who knows how many days old. this is a pastry there is no excuse why they should not be be making and baking these fresh daily. the pastry was doughy oily, it was not even flaky, the inside was yellow and tasted off. after my first bite it made my stomach turn. i threw it out and even the small amount i ate made me unwell a half an hour later. this was disgusting to say the least and i will not be returning.
The old lady behind the counter is very rude she has no sense of customer service. When I asked when the Burke will be ready, she took out of the tray and served uncooked pie. I tried and told her it is not cooked yet. She does not talk or answer. With a long face she shovels the pie back to the oven. 5 minutes later she serves and again no apology or any gesture. I try a bite and Again the pie is not cooked. I gave up and left with the pie. I will cook at home and see if it still tastes like a dough.
I am extremely disappointed with my experience at this place. I ordered a whole spiral borek pie for pickup and was told it would be ready in 30 minutes. When I arrived, the food was not ready, and the staff informed me that they had given my order to someone else. This happened not once, but twice. While the food itself is not too bad, the service is absolutely horrendous. The lack of organization and poor communication have made this my last visit to this place. I will not be returning.
Nothing. Like albanian's hospitality nothing like the bronx not too many options. They serve you with holla bread IS SHANE
Do not order over the phone. Multiple times I’ve ordered food for pick up and it was not even in the process of being cooked upon arrival. Waste of time. Now if you want to sit down or order for delivery via GrubHub it’s a different story. It just sucks that they don’t care about the customers they speak with on the phone. Food is good if it makes it to you.
The place is really cute, but the service is terrible… the food is even worse. The meat burek had barely any meat, it was dry, and nothing like a proper burek. I think they really need to work much more on the food and stop being so stingy
