Crawfish mala style! 1st time eating crawfish this way and I must say it was very good! Crawfish were fresh and surprisingly large considering it’s so early in the season
Best Chinese food!!! We ordered pork egg rolls, spicy wontons, pork potstickers and beef lo mein. It was phenomenal! Highly recommend. It was very busy on Valentine’s Day but totally worth the 20 minute wait.
Updates: The restaurant later contacted me directly and explained it was a supplier issue. They were very sincere and offered a refund as well as to remake the food. I appreciate their willingness to take responsibility and make things right. ———————————————— Very disappointing experience. I ordered through DoorDash and paid over $100 for three dishes. The crawfish was extremely poor quality — the meat was mushy and falling apart like paste, which is not the texture of fresh crawfish at all. I ate a few before realizing something was wrong and my stomach started feeling uncomfortable afterward. The Peking duck was also missing the essential crepes and sauce, which makes it impossible to eat properly. The only acceptable dish was the snow pea leaves. For the price paid, this level of quality is completely unacceptable. I’ve had crawfish many times and this was definitely not fresh.
Overall the food was really good! The Spicy Chicken (not too spicy but with the schezuuan peppercorn) and the Yu Xiang eggplant (sweet) were my favorites, they were perfect. 10/10 would strongly recommend. The soup dumplings didn't have much soup, so they kinda felt like wontons, but they were yummy too. The sesame red bean pancake was good but there was y a lot of filling so it wasn't as sweet as I've had it at other places. Overall really good food though, I'll come again!
best Sichuan food in Austin. most of it was gone before I got a chance for a photo... my favorite is the pork rib dry pot (extra spicy). kinda salty but ok with rice. I don't recommend their Beijing duck - bland. overall the portions are a bit small for the price but nothing super unreasonable.
Came here for the first time, and what a great surprise! We were just roaming around the shopping center when this restaurant caught our eye. At first, we were debating between grabbing a drink or having some Chinese food, and we’re so glad we decided to stop in for a meal. It turned out to be one of the best choices of the day! The highlight for us was definitely the mapo tofu—without a doubt the best we’ve had in the area. The flavors were bold, the spice level was spot-on, and the peppercorn added just the right kick without being overwhelming. We also ordered the eggplant dish, which was just as impressive—tender, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. Everything felt authentic, fresh, and thoughtfully prepared. The atmosphere was welcoming, and we left excited to come back and try more dishes. This spot is a gem, and we’ll definitely return soon. Cheers 🥂 They have a robot machine running around which was cute! ☺️
Everyone should take their first date here and fall in love and raise beautiful children and come back for anniversaries because it hits every time. Get the soup dumplings and the fried rice, slap some Chilli oil on there and dont say I didn't do anything for you. Also its really easy to order here, one of the best parts
Update! Best whole duck so far! The soup that came with it was a big bowl perfect for the family I was with! My friend brought her two kids and we had a feast. The server didn't speak much English but the service was professional and she was very attentive. This experience was even better than the first visit we had a year ago. They give military discount!! Ordering was savvy on the tablet, pictures always help! We beat the crowd at 4:30pm on a Monday! There was not an item we ordered that didn't taste authentic!!! Clean and the robot staff was cute lol. Nice touch :) -— Awesome sauce. Literally! My friend and I needed to be healthy and we did well. The taste was yummy, staff friendly and the cost was not bad! We ordered steak sea bass, bokchoy with nushrooms, eggplant and seaweed (I think). All superb dishes!
If you're craving authentic Sichuan with a fun unique robot experience, Mala Chili is the spot! We had heard a lot about this hidden little gem inside the H-Mart parking lot, but didn’t expect the flavors to we ate to be so satisfying and soul warming! They even have an adorable and hilarious robot server that had us giggling and grinning from the start. FYI- The menu is HUGE—like, "you’ll need a second to process this" kind of huge—but thankfully, the manager was incredibly informative and helped us narrow it down based on our flavor and meat preferences plus gave us some insights on the spice tolerance. While everything we ate was SUPER tasty, let’s talk about the stars of the show: The Mala Dry Pot Fish — hands down a must-order! We’re always hesitant to order fish at a Chinese restaurant, because we get nervous that it will smell or taste fish, but we can hands down say that this was one of our FAV’s!!! It was perfectly crispy, not fishy at all, and PACKED with flavor! The Spicy Chicken and the Fried Shrimp with Crispy Rice felt similar in flavoring as the dry pot fish and super easy to pop in your mouth and eat! So crispy such a MUST! The Male Lamb Shank is a MUST for lamb lovers! Massive in size and the accompanied veggies were also to die for! The Scallion pancakes were a classic and so crispy! The 1/2 order of Peking Duck to make duck tacos and enjoy some glass noodle soup was also super fun and we LOVED the sauce and broth it came with! Don’t skip the bubbly drinks! We got the Golden Bubbly with no added sugar—and it was perfectly refreshing and just sweet enough to cool the spice. Passion Fruit Panna Yotta was the perfect dessert finish!! Creamy, sweet and tangy! Bonus: you can BYOB, and we did just that with some cerveza! Portions are generous (come hungry or bring a friend with big chopstick energy), service is speedy, and the whole experience was way more fun than your average dinner out! Whether you're a Sichuan pro or curious newbie like us, Mala Chili is absolutely worth checking out!
Admittedly, atmosphere and service can use some work but omg, the food was so good! We ordered the Chongqing Jiangbei Boiled Fish and the Sesame Chicken and both were ridiculously good. The boiled fish could’ve fed 3-4 people. It’s huge. The fish was flaky and the broth was light but flavorful. The sesame chicken was super crunchy and delicious. Generous portions. I will add the service was nice and kind but on the slower side and perhaps they’re understaffed. Can’t wait to go back and bring my family!
We visited Mala Chili for the first time and were seriously impressed — the food absolutely lives up to the hype! We sampled a variety of dishes: egg rolls, soup dumplings, red chili wontons, chicken lo mein, and sesame chicken. Everything was flavorful and delicious. Ordering was super convenient with the tablet right at the table, and our food arrived quickly. The staff was friendly and attentive throughout our meal. A fun bonus? Our food was delivered by a robot, which added a playful touch to the experience. We’re already looking forward to our next visit!
If you’re craving bold, flavorful Chinese cuisine, **Mala Chili** is a spot you need to try. We were impressed with the food, and I can’t wait to share the highlights! ### The Food: 9/10 We started with the **Chicken Pot Stickers**, and they were fantastic—crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and packed with flavor. Next up was the **Chicken Lo Mein**, which was a solid choice. The noodles were perfectly cooked, and the dish had a great balance of savory flavors with just the right amount of veggies and tender chicken. The star of the meal, though, was the **Dry Hotpot**. It was packed with spice, depth, and a mix of textures that made every bite exciting. The ingredients were fresh, and the seasoning was spot-on—spicy but not overwhelming. It’s a must-try if you love bold, aromatic dishes. ### The Service: 8/10 The staff was friendly and attentive, though the restaurant was busy, so there was a bit of a wait for our food. That said, the servers were polite and made sure we had everything we needed. ### The Atmosphere: 8/10 Mala Chili has a cozy, no-frills vibe that feels authentic and welcoming. It’s not overly fancy, but it’s clean and comfortable, making it a great spot for a casual meal. ### Value for Money: 9/10 The portions were generous, and the quality of the food made it well worth the price. We left feeling satisfied and already planning our next visit. ### Final Thoughts Mala Chili is a great choice for anyone who loves flavorful, authentic Chinese dishes. The Chicken Pot Stickers, Chicken Lo Mein, and Dry Hotpot were all highlights, and the overall experience was enjoyable. If you’re in the mood for something spicy and satisfying, this is the place to go.
Mala Chili 麻辣川味 is truly a hidden gem in the north Austin area, offering an incredible selection of authentic and flavorful Chinese dishes. From the delicate and tasty steamed dumplings sampler to the unique and comforting dumpling soup, every bite is a treat. Their famous Peking duck is a must-try, but my top recommendation goes to the Chongqing Jiangbei Boiled Fish—a dish bursting with bold chili sauce and rich, complex flavors. Another standout is the Westlake Beef Soup, which is hearty and packed with deliciousness. Don’t miss out on the classics, like the savory Beef Lo Mein and the perfectly seasoned Yangzhou Fried Rice. To round off your meal, their house-made yogurts are an unexpected yet delightful touch! This spot has quickly become my favorite Chinese restaurant in Austin, not only for the outstanding flavors but also for the exceptional service. A special thanks to Phoebe for making the experience even more memorable. Highly recommend visiting Mala Chili if you’re looking for authentic and satisfying Chinese cuisine in Austin!
We visited this place for lunch on a weekday. It has been on my list for a long time, and it did not disappoint. We ordered the jumping fish (spicy and numbing), spicy lamb, and stir-fried eggplant with green beans. All three dishes tasted great, and the staff were very friendly.
Cedar Park has very few decent Chinese food spots, so happy to have found Mala chili. Things that stand out are the expansive and creative menu and good portions on the appetizers. They do have many of the typical dishes (sweet and sour pork, orange beef, etc,) but they also have many things we've never seen that we'd like to come back to try. And they don't skimp on orders like dumplings. Service is great as well.
A good semi-casual dinner spot. My wife’s usual go-to when we’re craving some Szechuan style- peppercorn doused flavors. I got the usual spicy beef noodles and spicy chicken and the flavors were consistent as my two previous visits. The chicken’s seasonings tends to be on a bit saltier side and it comes with some white rice. The waiters/waitresses are a hit or miss. One of few restaurants I’ve been to that uses a tablet for ordering which is interesting
Went there for lunch. They do not have lunch menu. The portion is pretty big so there were lots of leftovers. Tried home made tofu, mala wonton, golden pickled pepper fatty beef. Tofu had a lot of spicy sauce. I liked the taste but prefer it with less sauce. Mala wonton the flavor was good but prefer the skin to be thinner. Yogurt drink was refreshing after a little heavy spicy food. It would be nice if they had lunch menu.
The food is great for a small local spot. The service can be improved, my waiter was very friendly but I didn’t see him often and he didn’t check in on me. I needed to ask for a Togo box and after packing up my food I sat there waiting for them to deliver a check so I could pay. Atmosphere is pleasant with table and booth seating available. You order off a tablet so it makes getting the correct order great.
A Chinese restaurant with a modern twist. Love the iPad menu, ease of placing order and the robot that delivers food to your table. Superb service. The staff is extremely welcoming. However the lack luster dishes were disappointing. The soup dumplings, vegetable dumplings, onion cake, and mapo tofu are just average. The dumplings’ dough lack texture. Onion cake was deep fried vs. pan fried. The yogurt drinks are highly recommended.
Is it authentic? Yes! Is it good? No! The coolest thing about this spot is the tablet ordering system that sends orders directly to the kitchen. We ordered two egg drop soups, scallion pancakes, chicken dumplings, and General Tso's chicken. The soup had a crap load of gluten in it as it was gummy. It was not just broth. The scallion pancake was greasy, and the steamed dumplings came out dry. The chicken was definitely large chunks, moist, covered in sauce, but it was thick and unflavored. I came for a day date. I was impressed, but it wasn't palatable; my date hated it. He refused after the egg drop soup. I tried adding chili oil, but it didn't work.
I just ordered beef noodles on Uber Eats. There is no single piece of beef in it. Only 2-3 mini piece I can't even call it beef. Because I ordered extra noodle they sent me 2 box of plain noodle and soup base. Is that how you treat customers in the store too? Or it's just because it's take away. I paid 26$ for plain noodle and soup base. This is very disrespectful and unacceptable. Definitely the worst order I ever received! You can see the picture on their page and the soup base they sent me. Shame on you.
