Great food. Great spot. Sometimes service can take a little while to get started but food arrives quickly and I've never been disappointed.
Easily the best Mexican food I've found in Humboldt / Del Norte Counties combined! Added bonus is live music on Friday and Saturday nights, and many vegan options (tofu and great mixed vegetables- my son and his gf are vegan and said their meals were great!).
My favorite mexican restaurant hands down ! The staff is so cool ! I love the chips and salsa i get the # 5 . 2 chicken enchiladas rice and beans a side a guacamole diet now that is on hit! You will be thanking me .
Absolutely great customer service. The food was pretty decent as well. Drinks definitely can use little bit more experienced bartender.
The reason for 5 stars was I appreciate that they stated in the menu that the rice and beans have no animal fat or meat stock, so as a vegetarian I didn't have to ask! The food was good... With veggie options for many dishes.
Some of the best service my family and I have ever had at a restaurant. The food was delicious, with good vegetarian options, the price was right, and we were stuffed. What more could we ask for? Thank you for a wonderful experience!
Delicious food, great place to host a party or family meal. We had Chapala Cater our Christmas party. They let us use the loft space for free (included in catering) and were very friendly and attentive with our large group of 30ish people. Margaritas were great too. Our food was hot and delicious. Enchillads and a taco bar was the food options for the night.
Very tasty. I had been craving Jamaica and got my fix here. I had the steak picado. It was very flavorful and excellent portion. It also came with a small bowl of posole which was very good. The night we went (Saturday) there was live music, very enjoyable.
Went there for my 38th wedding anniversary. Both my wife and I thought they were very good and attentive. The food was good too
Quick friendly staff. The food is tasty ance arrives hot and timely. Chips and salsa appetizers are always delicious. Art and murals add to the vibe. Clean restaurant and family friendly with coloring pages available.
Steak picado was excellent 👍. It's also a beautiful place!!! Really pleasant ambience. Very good service. Absolutely recommend.
Sit in the window for an above superior experience! Great food - combo plates are very generous.
Not sure if it is the oldest mexican food place in the area, but it has been around all my life, and is in a beautiful older building. With art from many central american artists and a vaulted sealing give this place a really warm feeling. Add the frequent live music from the Andes, and you have an amazing setting for a date or family gathering. The food is amazing and so is the service. I Love This Place. If you haven't been, you should check it out.
Great Mexican food. Many entrees on their menu to choose. Very friendly waiters/Waiters. Beautiful paintings on the far wall. Great cooks too. 5 Stars.
One of my favorite Mexican restaurants in Eureka. Always great service and the food is delicious. The warnings on some of their orders - "huge / giant portions" - are definitely not a lie.
Fantastic authentic Mexican food. Great service. The salsa is really good but hot. (Authentic😂👍) reasonably priced. Historic bldg right downtown.
My favorite item is the Chili Rellano Burrito. Great prices. Fast turn-around time. Always clean and never causes an "undo distress of the belly." Great food. Dependable. You should definitely go there, and it's also a good idea to visit the music store across the street!
I went to a friend's Birthday Party, at Chapala Cafe. We, my Grandson and I were late, but the waiter made it real easy for us to get our food ordered and cook and we were able to join the party move from the restaurant to my friends home at the same time. Our food was great! It was in the right proportions, It tasted good and we remained full for the rest of the day.
I just had a surprise birthday party for my boyfriend last weekend in the balcony. I was so thankful, grateful and impressed with the service, the food and the amazing atmosphere. The wait staff rocked it and was able to keep track of drinks for 45 people! THANK you again Chapalas!
Ate here for the first time yesterday and I would definitely recommend. We had a large party and they managed to seat us right away. Our server was great, very knowledgeable and attentive. The restaurant was very cozy, all the staff we met were very friendly. I had a blackberry margarita (fabulous) and the molcahete which was absolutely delicious (although I do recommend sharing as it’s a lot for one person). I would definitely eat here again next time I’m in Eureka!
Staff was great! Food was amazing! Highly recommend the Veggie Fajitas!
Chapala Cafe serves fantastic authentic Mexican food at an affordable price. Amazing beans, rice, and my favorite enchiladas. My wife and I love this restaurant. Check it out and I promise you won't be disappointed! Thank you Chapala👍
Hands-down, best margarita in all of the 707! Give the jalapeño margarita a try. I am going to say you must be able to handle heat but it was delicious! We arrived 30 minutes before closing and the staff did not bat and I and delivered an exceptional meal. I would even go as far as to say that the spice to even the most common meal is amazing here!
Love this place. Always good food, and the service is spot on.
Really good Mexican food at a good price. It's an extensive menu and everything I've had there so far has been very good. The restaurant has lots of seating and high ceilings so it's not loud even when it's crowded. They sometimes have live music and the service is always friendly. They've also got a full wall mural that has some cool hidden details.
My husband and I come here pretty often, and we love it! The service is always fantastic and the food is delicious. We have never had a bad experience here. Chapalas is definitely our favorite Mexican restaurant in town. They never disappoint.
Literally the best Mexican food my mom and I ever had. Would literally hop back onto a plane and fly to Eureka again just for this food.
Great food and there's a huge mural on the inside. Margaritas are bomb. If you sit by the window there is a cute message telling you to smile and that you'll get 10% off your meal. Really love the atmosphere here.
We have a group that likes to go to plays at NCRT .. and we always do dinner at Chapalas 1st. Great food and drinks!
This place was great! It was easy to find street parking, and with it being such a large space we were seated immediately. They have several different flavors of margaritas and you can pick your tequila from an extensive list... All very reasonably priced! The marg was delicious, and stong. The chips were warm and the salsa was delicious. They have a full menu with LOTS of veggie options, I was super impressed. A great place for meat eaters and vegetarians!
Quick service. Friendly staff. Delicious, flavorful food. It exceeded my expectation. I would definitely go back!
Best Mexican restaurant in town. I've been going to this place for years. The food is everything you'd expect for a restaurant. It tastes amazing, there's plenty of flavor, there's plenty of food, and there are plenty of options when it comes to decision making. The service is always amazing. The waiter/waitress constantly checks in but is not overly helpful, always on top of drink refills, very quick when we need something, and everyone is extremely friendly and welcoming. The atmosphere is spot on. The music is great, sometimes they'll have live bands host, the music and lighting is comfortable and NOT over-bearing, and the seating is comfortable and spacious. One of my favorite places to go when I can't decide where I want to celebrate an occasion, and will always be my go to for Mexican style food.
Chicken and rice soup was exceptional. I had the chalupa which was good. He had the pork chop dinner and obviously enjoyed it. Service was excellent. Recommend this place highly.
Remodeled dining room is beautiful! Food and service are always fantastic!
Ordered takeout on a Sunday evening. Friendly service. Got the Chile Relleno Burrito (HUGE), Kids Tostada (also a lot of food), and some chips and guac (delicious). Ordered and picked up, all within 10 minutes.
We celebrated our father that had passed. The team was amazing, the food was amazing, the atmosphere was amazing. With heavy hearts, we celebrated my dad who had recently passed. It was an opportunity to take care of us, not knowing our loss. Chaplain Cafe delivered. Thank you so much
Best Mexican food around and always good service. The hibiscus margarita with homemade hibiscus syrup, and the homemade corn tortillas, are both excellent. I love the new addition of the bar, and the upgrade on the chairs and tables. Love this place!
It's really good, the food is huge and good to split with a partner or friend. I always enjoy it
The ceviche was amazing!!! Shrimp and avocado slices tasted Even better thr next day!...Service was great and well as atmosphere was on point 👉 Yummmmmmy.
Overstaffed myself due to compulsive drive to consume every bit that I could fit in my belly. However due to lack of foresight I was forced to consume it a second time and it tasted just as delicious the first! What's the saying liquor before beer you're in the clear..... 😜
We were traveling through town and called first to ask about allergies, etc., Caesar answered the phone and was very polite and was able to answer all of our questions. When we arrived, Cesar was our waiter and did an excellent job! The veggie fajitas were so good! Highly recommend!
The food was really good! I got the veggie fajitas and the portion was huge. Staff was kind and helpful. The food came out quickly after we ordered.
Great atmosphere, great service! Chips were hot and fresh tasting and the salsa was delicious, especially the hotter salsa. 6 people with an order of a few chicken burritos, a fish taco, veggie tamale, chorizo breakfast burrito, and veggie fajitas. So good! The fresh made corn tortillas were excellent. Finished it with a little fried ice cream, of course. If we didn’t live so far away, this establishment would be visited regularly.
Hello! I’ve been patronizing Chappie’s for at the minimum, an entire decade! I keep coming back for more because this place is the bomb 💣 it’s my go-to Mexican food fix and I word-of-mouth this place incessantly when on the topic of restaurants! You know I love you if you’ve been given a gift card from me 😃😉 I used to be loyal to Rita’s until I was introduced to Chappie’s. Once you go Chap, you never go back! I like it spicy 🥵 🌶️
this place felt like a secret. it was very low sensory, and there are a lot of places to sit. I feel they deserve more customers because of how good my experience was. I ordered a strawberry margarita and the volcano salad. chicken was cooked very well and the margarita was also made well. I had dinner alone and I really appreciated the vibe. special shout out to Pepe my server <3
Consistently good service and authentic food. Generous portions, I always take home at least half of my meal, maybe because I'm full of chips and salsa which are good enough to make a meal by themselves. Pleasantly surprised to see many vegetarian options, and was very happy with the mixed veggie burrito.
This is my FAVORITE Mexican Restaurant because of the great food, BUT the last time I ordered the beans they did not taste homemade. My family and I noticed they tasted like canned beans. Please bring back the original beans! I have been eating there for years! I will be ordering again soon!!!
Cozy neighborhood eatery near the waterfront offering a wide variety of Mexican food. Somewhat Americanized. Nice ambiance. I had the Flautas which were crispy and delicious. Nice range of draft beers including Dos Equis Amber.
I think this place is really good if your looking for good size portions of average Mexican food. I love the ambiance. It seems clean, the staff is cool. The chicken taco and cheese enchilada plate did not disappoint.
We stopped here with a group of thirteen. Very good service and delicious food. The only drawback was that they couldn't split the bill. We could only pay with one credit card, otherwise it would be 5 stars.
Chapala is usually good for the most part. Sometimes it can be a tad hit & miss. I like the service BUT there is 1 female waitress that's always short & rude. We usually request another server if he's available. I cringe if we have to get her. Other than that....the food is pretty good!!
Great service. Very friendly, attentive, and quick. Portions are XL. Tasty and satisfying but half the menu at least is not authentic Mexican faire. More of an americanized Mexican cuisine. Horrible neighborhood. Wouldn't suggest lone females to venture there. I was assaulted by (assuming) a homeless guy who appeared to be on drugs and/or had mental health issues. Just beware.
Good food, that is consistent over the years. The staff is friendly and efficient. I suggest making reservations, because it is always busy.
Always really solid food and a great atmosphere. I took my dad here, who lives in Mexico, and he said the food was better than most of the Mexican food he eats there! Also some of the best salsa in town.
We have recently switched to this place for our Mexican place of choice in eureka since Ritas closed. The service is usually always excellent although there is one female waitress we got that wasn't nearly as good as the guys that we normally have. The margaritas are amazing, the chips and salsa are good. The flavor of the food is mediocre I'd say but we mainly come back for good service, margaritas and chips and salsa
Busy Tuesday night and only two wait staff with the owner doing triple duty (kitchen/bussing/cashier). The staff were working as best they could and even though the wait was a bit longer than usual, the food was on point. Very delicious menu our party of 6 had no complaints.
I'm from So Cal, so my expectations are pretty high when it comes to Mexican restaurants. Four of us had dinner here. Prices are reasonable for this style of place. Most dinners were between $15 and $20. Good selection on the menu. Each meal we ordered was average to above average taste. Chorizo breakfast burrito was the best. Ranchero burrito was mushy, probably from the water in the lettuce. Pretty bland, wouldn't order it again. Portion sizes were good except for quesadillas - large order was about half a meal's worth. Overall I think 4 stars sums it up. For this part of the country, good Mexican food, reasonable price.
Was there about 8 months ago. Fast friendly service. Loved the chips and salsa. Ate there with another couple. It’s one of there favorite places to go. Happy they took my wife and I there. The food was really tasty and hot. Love the old buildings in Old Downtown. I would go back there again in a heartbeat.
A decent place to eat. I've been eating off and on here for over 20 years. Nowadays though I feel the price for the food is a little too high for my liking. Mexican food never used to be this expensive as it's most of the time a plate of beans and rice with a protein option like chicken. But here we are, paying 25 dollars for a plate. I get running a business is expensive and tough, but inflation makes me not want to go out as much these days to support these restaurants.
Friendly staff, food didn't take very long. It was a little weird having an action movie playing on a TV in a restaurant but that's just my opinion. First time I ever tried Tingas tacos (flavored chicken) and it was so delicious. They bring chips and a couple salsas. 5 beers on tap
Stale chips, watered-down salsa, mediocre food and service. Probably will not go back. Yes, I ordered a Super Burrito - nothing fancy. It was good enough for not having eaten all day. Atmosphere is ok, lots of tables and space. Mural inside restaurant is cool, full bar, in old town which is nice to walk around and close to the water. That's it.
Had a carne asada burrito to go. It came with a bag of tortilla chips, 2 hot sauces, lettuce, pico, guac, crema in a paper clamshell with 2 paper napkins plastic fork and knife. Inside the flour tortilla was carne asada and refried beans. The taste of asada was bland and the texture was a bit tough with no grilling flavors. The result is mainly bean flavor. There were plenty of refried beans, but enough asada to make it chewy. Adding the other ingredients helped, but the tortilla was small. After reassembly and adding the hot sauce the flavor was much better, but still lacking the grilled and spicy flavor of great asada. Really needed more citrus, garlic, chili and smoke flavors.
Meh. Not overly impressive Mexican food. Chips were kind of stale tasting. The salsa helped mask some of the stale. Grilled chicken tacos were pretty bland and devoid of any semblance of spice. Abondegas was unimpressive and the meatballs had an odd taste. Carne asada was also just kinda meh... Doubt I'll be back here again.
Overrated. Staff was friendly and prompt but the food was not good. Salsa was watery, guacamole was not seasoned well. I had the Carne Asada. The thin cut steak was cooked until it’s done and cooked if for another 10 mins so that it’s quasi jerky is what I had.
Ordered enchiladas with rice and beans. I don't understand why the food was not good. People say it's a good Mexican restaurant, but that's not true. Will not eat there food anymore.
The ambience is nice, beautiful spot but the food is not good. So much potential here. Like many places in Humboldt county, the chips and salsa taste rancid. The enchilada sauce taste out of a can, & the beans taste old. Train your cooks & make some traditional flavors again.
I don't know how this place could possibly have received such high reviews. I came by and ordered 3 tacos a la carte one pollo and 2 al pastor. The bill came to over 10 bucks for 3 regular sized tacos but I was hungry. After a short wait I received my order and headed outside to enjoy, I though. The 3 tacos were the worst I can ever recall eating. All around low quality. Tortilla, meat, you name it. Meat was flavorless and seemed over cooked, tortillas were chewy and also flavorless. No lime for the tacos. They were dry and unappetizing, but like I said earlier, I was hungry. So I used their La Victoria grade salsa, that came with he cold tortilla chips to choke down these abominations of Mexican cuisine. You'd be better off at Taco Bell and I don't say that lightly.
We ordered to go. The food was mushy and over cooked (burned). My taco salad container had about a half cup of mystery water that made the entire thing soggy and gross.
I was told it was the best mexican food in Humboldt. The food was terrible. Bland rice, beans were meh. Got an enchilada, taco, and Chille dish. Was over all just disappointing.
I came to eat dinner with my family and friends and had the worst experience ever if I could give 0 stars I would. The food was subpar, the service was horrible(nonexistent), and on top of that they charged us gratuity and a liquor tax along with over charging us on meat substitution. I have gone to this restaurant many times before and it keeps getting worse. We will not be going back again, it was very disappointing. This place is scamming people. Stay away from this place.
Food okay, nice people, but two families who came in after us had their meals before any of us got something to drink. I had to ask for someone to take order. We had to ask three times before everyone had something to drink. Appetizer arrived after I reminded them half way through the meal. I had to go find a waiter to get the check.
Worst Mexican food in eureka! They are overpriced charged 5 dollars for pico and 5 for guacamole, 20 for a fried piece of bread with no meat in it im disgusted not to mentions this is the 5th time. I’ve been disappointed I keep trying again hoping for better but it’s garbage every time not to mention the restaurant smells bad every time I go in I’ve lived here my whole life and most Mexican please here are better then this one they are conveniently located to get business but you should take your business anywhere but here!
I understand it was father's day, but the restaurant was not full, and yet the service was terrible. We didn't get all of our order, had to attempt many times to flag down someone just to get a drink refill, and had to go get our own to go box for leftovers from the shelf. That along with employees scouping up chips with their bare hands (after they bussed dirty dishes) for the chip baskets and the young kids going in and out of the kitchen while coughing. We will find a new place.
Walked in with 2 other people they got sat and and got there order taken while I wasn’t even talked to once. I was in line for 20 mins all he did was look at me. the door dashers were talked to before me. I ended up walking out. Would not recommend service is horrible.
This was probably a lovely restaurant at one time. Unfortunately. It is not any more. The food was bland, the sauce (which we said we didn't want) was watery. Both of us felt sick to our stomachs after eating there. The interior of the restaurant was pleasant but everything looked faded and jaded. We won't ever go back unless we hear they're making an effort.
