Listen, I knew the food was gonna be good when they brought them hot chips out with homemade salsa. And I was absolutely correct. I almost bit a finger off bc I was eating so fast. The most delicious food I've had in a long time. And, they have tons of variety and specials. Try the flauntas, burritos, and chicken tacos 🙌🏾 I highly recommend!

We had Martin as our waiter and he was one of the best waiters I’ve had in awhile! He was on point and did not skip a beat. All the other servers were running there butts off as well and looked very attentive to there tables as well! The food was out of this world amazing! What a wonderful experience and will definitely be back!!💕

Service in this place is great. There's a good selection of food and if you aren't a fan of much Mexican food, there are a few menu options for you. Eating here is fairly cheap too. Chips and salsa are free and they give each person their own little bowl to pour salsa into. If you run out of what they give you at the start don't be afraid to ask for more because it's free!

It was holiday so I believe they were making everything fast. It is usually excellent food but with it being packed an busy I think it was a little off. This will not stop me from going back. I love this restaurant.

We decided to try El Vaquero as we've been to most of the Mexican places near us. I read the reviews and they were good so we went. The waitress we had was very attentive. Chips and salsa were brought right away. I will say that their chips aren't as crispy as others we've had but the salsa was good. There combo plates are $7.99. I was able to get a chicken quesadilla with beans/rice-very good. My husband had a combo too and he liked his. The best was their wine. $5.49 a glass and not one of these only 4 oz deals-a whole glass! I was really impressed. Will definitely be going back.

Authentic Delicious Clean My husband and I are pretty much food snobs. We can't remember the last time we thought a restaurant was exceptional and this place truly is. Our waiter was awesome and the food was beyond delicious. Restaurant was cozy and very clean with great prices.

2nd time eating there and equally as enjoyable. The food was really good! The waitstaff interaction is what i loved even more. My wife and I laughed to ourselves listening to the service staff asking the respective patrons if everything was "bueno". There were a few other Spanish words that were used. It was like a Spanish lesson that all seemed to enjoy. Everyone answered with a "si" and a smile. It was nice hearing others practicing their Spanish when ordering. Several patrons were joking with the waitstaff leading me to believe they were regular visitors. I always love seeing people from different cultures enjoying each other! Will definitely go back again!

Well folks, we have a new favorite Mexican restaurant. It starts with endless baskets of fresh, warm and perfectly salted tortilla chips paired with their super tasty salsa. Tonights entrees included Pollo a la Fiesta and Pollo Con Crema which were heavily enhanced by the made in house flour tortillas. El Vaquero with their super friendly servers are second to none. Do yourself a favor and try this place out.

The service and hospitality was amazing! Minimal wait time to be seated. The chips & dips were fresh, great Guacamole! The food could use a tad more seasoning. I do not cook with salt (hypersion) so I can taste it when eating out; however, not this night. Overall, would visit again and highly recommend.

I've been going to this restaurant for almost seven years now. I love their food and have tried almost everything on the menu. I think there is something to enjoy for people of all tastes. I highly recommend the Carnitas, or the Pollo con Crema. Their shrimp dishes and steaks are also very delicious! Oh, and their chicken soup is superb. Try anything with the Agua de piña (pineapple water) as a drink. They are quick, clean, helpful, and reasonably priced. I love being a patron of this restaurant and will continue to come here regularly.

El Vaquero in Locust is hands down one of my favorite places to eat—I always come here, and it never disappoints. From the moment you walk in, you're greeted with a warm and friendly atmosphere that makes you feel right at home. The staff is consistently welcoming, attentive, and quick to serve, even during busy hours. The food is absolutely fantastic. Everything I’ve tried has been fresh, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. The menu has a great variety of options, whether you’re in the mood for classic tacos, enchiladas, sizzling fajitas, or something a little different. Their chips and salsa come out fast and are always a great start to the meal. I especially love how generous the portions are—you definitely get your money’s worth here. What really makes El Vaquero stand out, though, is the consistency. No matter what day or time I visit, I know I’m going to get great food and great service. It's clear that the team here takes pride in what they do, and it shows in every detail—from the way the food is presented to the way they treat their customers. If you’re in Locust and looking for a place to enjoy delicious, authentic Mexican food in a relaxed and friendly setting, I can’t recommend El Vaquero enough. It’s a five-star experience every single time.

As soon as you enter this restaurant you feel relaxed. The staff is friendly and seats you promptly with chips and salsa placed immediately. This is my husband's favorite place to eat in our area. The food is always great, the service is always prompt and with a smile. We've become friendly with some of the staff and they will joke and have a good time with you. I eat gluten free so sometimes my choices are limited, but they will use corn tortillas for my meals so I have more to choose from. I enjoy having a sangria or margherita while there and cannot complain about taste. Best sangria in the area. Highly recommend for a nice meal and friendly clean atmosphere

Food was good, salsa for chips not the best flavor. If you order the Carnitas, tortillas doesn't come with it as usual, so you'll have to order some for a extra fee. But food prices are good.

We have ordered from this place almost once a week for the past several years. Love their food. Until tonight. Both of our pollo fundidos had small twigs in them. It was very odd. Called the restaurant to tell them to check whatever pot it came out of and they basically did not care. Just check your food.😏

Good food but the service was sub par (had to wait for food, food not delivered together, had to wait for a server to visit). The manager (or owner?) said sorry and indicated they were short staffed, but otherwise no one seemed to concerned. Get the cheese dip with meat. It.is a great appetizer (I posted a picture). Chips are good but even thicker chips would be better. Recommended but be prepared for hit or miss service.

Taco salads were good. No guacamole on it (most places put a scoop with the sour cream). Fast service. Wait staff were very attentive. Very friendly and this is very clean restaurant. Margaritas are good but rather than put the duck and cute lil light- charge me a few dollars less and just give me the drink instead of a 12 buck Margarita. 😆🍹but the drink itself was good.

We were in the mood for Mexican so we tried a Mexican restaurant in Locust, El Vaquero. The restaurant itself is not new, but it’s new to us. It was pretty busy when we got there and had to wait about 10-15 minutes, not too bad. We noticed that all of the restaurant staff were wearing masks, but the number of customers wearing them versus not, leaned more to the “not” side. The sanitation grade is a 98 which is excellent in my book! The restaurant did a good job of social distancing customers by blocking off tables; however, we were like sardines in a can in the waiting space, which is a very small area at the door. As I mentioned, all the staff were wearing masks and gloves, and the bottle of salsa was covered with foil, which I appreciated. We ordered the chicken fajitas for two. I didn’t like the chips, but the salsa was flavorful enough. When our fajitas arrived, it was a huge pile in a small pan, but they had a really good flavor. I had thought recently that I may be losing my sense of taste because I haven’t found anything in a very long time that tasted good, much less flavorful. These fajitas proved me wrong! The chicken, peppers, and onions were grilled perfectly with just the right amount of spices. I asked for a small plate to eat my fajitas on, but never got it, so I just used the aluminum foil that the tortillas came wrapped in. At every other Mexican restaurant where we order fajitas for two, we get three tortillas each, but here we only got two each. I was okay with that since I usually only eat two anyway. I loved the rice, which was “sticky” and not all dried out like most places, but it did need a little help and the salsa provided that assistance. It gave a flavor and extra kick that the rice needed. The Pico de gallo had a wonderfully fresh flavor that I loved! The fresh cilantro opened up my taste buds and made them dance all around! Ohmigosh, I don’t think I’ve had cilantro that fresh anywhere! Living in Charlotte it did take us a few minutes to get there, but it was well worth it. We will probably be back!

D
Dwight Smith

Service was bad! Once we got our food the waiter never checked on us again. We ask three different employees to bring us napkin, and for more to drink and everyone said sure, but we never got a refill or napkins! This is the second time of getting poor service there. From now on we will drive to Albemarle to eat Mexican because the food is better and the service is outstanding!

R
Robin Smith Hill

I had a margarita that I didn't like, which has never happened before. It's very loud in the restaurant - music and talking affected by acoustics. Between the noise and his accent, I couldn't understand our server and I don't think he understood me (which may explain the margarita). The food was okay, but not equivalent to the prices. I was disappointed.

We used to live in Southern California and so those are our standards when eating Mexican food. The food at this place was marginal. The service was EXCELLENT! The place was packed on a Tuesday night. It's just not for ex-Californians or Texans.

D

The food has gone downhill. I don't know if they changed the chef's or management. My burrito tasted like cardboard. The refried beans had to be from a can. Prices up,food quality.

Sharon DeVitto

Waited quite awhile for our table, then it took about 45 minutes to get our food & some of the orders were not complete nor correct. Also some of our food tasted very salty, like too many preservatives. They do attempt to get your order right but I think the biggest problem is the language barrier & they're very under-staffed.

Lulu Armstrong
Lulu Armstrong

We enjoyed the overall quality of the food, but the kid's meal was unfortunately burned. The portion sizes were smaller than expected. Additionally, we noticed a change in our server's attitude after we placed our order, possibly because we didn't order any alcohol.

Salsa was horrible. No flavor at all. The Guacamole was very bland . The food was mediocre at best. Service was good but we probably wouldn’t go back. Nothing memorable at all.

T
Teresa Dixon

We have been customers of here for many years and the last couple of times the food has been undesirable. The taco salads awful and they charged 45.43 for tacos salads . Which had very lottle chicken and lettuce and slice tomatoes. They charge 2.43 to add a spoon of guacamole, the shells was stale . I was very disappointed after bragging how good they use to be . My mom was not happy with our meal we had there. So disappointed in what use to be my favorite place to eat in Locust .....

Brandy B
Brandy B

The food was bland. Salsa was too much tomato sauce and not enough spice. I tried speaking with the waiter to find out if other things had more flavor he was no help. I was also overcharged on my receipt. They corrected it at check out. I do not recommend this place.

B
Bounty By Observation

Loud and ignoxious music, people walking out drunk regularly. Staggering drunk.

D
Doc Wisdom

Our visit today was less than satisfying. The fajitas were mostly peppers and onions with very little meat. The overall flavor was overpowered with tomatoes. Everything was swimming in tomato juice. The staff stayed mostly around the back area of the restaurant. We received the first cup of tea they brought us and never received a refill. I fear they were more interested in hanging around in the back than they were waiting on their customers. This would not be a place I would return to.

J
Joanne S.

I asked for a steak burrito and this is what they gave me. And they forgot my sauce. For both the chips and the burrito.

D
Dawn Frye

This place used to be our favorite place to go. Food was always delicious and service was good attentive. Last few times and especially last time food was not as good. Service was almost not existent. When we needed a refill or anything we had to flag server down. When food was brought to table was basically let’s say not placed nicely. We had toddler , server seemed not to care. The staff seemed more interested in looking out the front window or socializing w one another than attending to their paying customers. We will NOT be coming back.

W
Wyatt Williams

I highly advise you not eat here. We asked for an extra order of tortillas and were served leftovers from another table. There were remnants of beans, onion, and sour cream on top of these obviously used tortillas. Absolutely disgusting and I would hate to know what the kitchen looks like. Will not be back!

I really only like to leave positive reviews, but this experience was out if the ordinary. Maybe it was just a bad day. All businesses have them, just like us. I walked in just after 4 on the Friday afternoon after July 4th so maybe the regular chef was off. The salsa wasn't very good but the chips were good. I ordered soup and enchiladas to be safe. The soup was lukewarm and not very tasty. I ate it quickly while it was a little warn. They brought the enchiladas out with the soup instead of after but they were also lukewarm and I didn't care for the cheese. Oddly, the beef was regular roast beef with no Mexican seasoning. I took a few bites and left the rest. And they really weren't good tasting either. Then I tried to pay the bill. I tried to give every indication that I was finished but while the servers kept stopping at the other tables, they didn't stop at mine. I eventually flagged one down and he brought me the check while he was on the phone. I quickly paid by cash, left a 20% tip, and left. The server asked me how everything was about 1 minute after he brought the food. I nodded that it was okay because I never send food back. He didn't ask, though, when I asked for the check or when he brought it to me, which I thought was odd, but he was on the phone when he brought me the check. Like I said, maybe a bad day. Other reviews seen positive. But this experience was out of the ordinary enough that I wanted to comment.

Z
Zack Doyle

This used to be our favorite spot. I don't know what had changed, but no more chances for El Vaquero. Our takeout orders are never correct, the quality of the food has been horrible the last few times, and tonight the steak tacos were so over seasoned and salty they were inedible. Only the spot up the road from here on out. Food, salsa, and margaritas are much better a bit further north...

M
Mike G.

My wife and I went for late lunch. Server couldn't speak English well and messed up our order. They must of had someone who normally doesn't cook, make our food. It was complete trash. We normally either finish our plate or take it home for leftovers. Not this time. We haven't been back since. Not spending money on these restaurants to not care. I'll just eat at home or eat Ramen before I eat this trash.

J
Jennifer F

Worst Mexican food ever, so it’s a great thing the portion size was small. Smallest burrito that was a size of a cigar with what tasted like canned tomato sauce, a spread of beans on a plate with blah couple of tablespoons of rice. Politely told the waitress it wasn’t good and didn’t finish food. All she said was sorry and didn’t take a cent off the bill? Terrible business! How the reviews are so high I will NEVER know. If this place stays open with their current food it will be a miracle. I recommend nothing on the menu.

Locust Grove: Un Lienzo Histórico y Natural
