This is a favorite of mine and my husband. The food is delicious and well priced. I usually end up with leftovers! Their pancakes are huge. I ordered two and couldn't finish it all.
Very tasty--nice, low-key diner. Staff was really friendly and very fast. We'll definitely eat here again.
Lived up here almost my entire life and never went to Spankys before. That will change after my visit here! Very good food and service. Got breakfast there and had decent portions and good flavor.
It's an authentic diner with positive hometown vibes from a previous era. The service is quick and the waitresses are very personable. The food is delicious and stays true to everything that people love about diner food.
Food was delicious, large portions, nice staff- homey vibe!
Had the hobo special n French toast and homemade toast was bangin off the charts good hit the spot and my partner had the he man jump off wit pancakes was good too and the peanut butter pie was lit💯💯
The woman working the front desk at our hotel recommended Spanky's ... where we could get an all day breakfast if we wish, or just great American style food. We were very impressed the food was amazing, and the service was friendly!!!
We had lunch at Spanky's and as usual the service and the food was excellent. Been there many times and have never been disappointed. Go there every time I'm in Massena.
Amy the waitress is frikken awesome. So friendly and always happy to see you. The food and service is awesome. Hot turkey sandwiches all day everyday.
One of my go to restaurants when I visit massena! Great food (I highly recommend the bacon cheese burger ), friendly staff , great prices , cooks home food , does need a bit if updating in bathrooms mostly and is not wheel chair accesible as you have to climb stairs to enter restaurant BUT , apart from that, I would HIGHLY recommend!!! I just love this place and the history .
This is still my favorite restaurant in Masenna ! Prices are fair..the waiting staff is awesome and the food never fails to please .. You have to try the steak and eggs breakfast 😋 with home made bread ..the best !!!
A little hidden gem. Great people, great food. . And they have pie :3 which is always a plus
Fast and friendly service, amazing food for low prices, and a quirky fun atmosphere. Probably the only diner I know where you can get lunch, read vintage newspaper articles, and buy a handmade birdhouse, but that's all part of its charm!
Awesome food. Great atmosphere at a good price. Staff is super friendly.
Me and my sister are from Indiana have been to many places in our 13 hour drive to Massena and spankys by far is the best place we have eaten at ever even from home. The service was sweet and charming. Food was off the charts amazing! Would eat there again and again! Not something you could get tired of
The breakfast was amazing! The Belgium waffle and thick, center cut bacon was on point! Dakota was a sweet & friendly waitress! Please add creamy white sausage gravy & biscuits to your menu for us Southern boys who come up here to visit! ;-)
The place was not too busy for lunch time so we got waited on quick. The food came out quick and hot still. But the wait staff could pay a little more attention to their customers.
This place has a reputation of being haunted. I can attest that the coffee is haunted. It might just be the worst coffee I've ever had. The food however is good. For the value of it you get a great deal. It is a fine diner indeed.
The food is always super delicious! The staff treats everyone like they are a friend, always pleasant and willing to help. it's always a pleasant dining experience!!!
We went in for breakfast. It was fast service, and the food was good. We were there at 10am, and didn't leave until 145pm. I was there with a friend that I hadn't seen in a while, and our waitress was great. She stopped by a few times to refill our coffees even after we had paid.
Decided to give this place a try while working late and heading back to Massena. From my walk in the door this place felt like home. My server was friendly and knowledgeable...sorry I missed her name. Clean and Covid compliant. As soon as one guest(s) left they were right on the sanitation program! My cheeseburger was cooked perfect. It was homemade juicy & delicious with the added mushrooms and onions...happily grilled before added to the burger...YUM! MY side of Coleslaw was very tasty and FRESH. A large portion too. Got chix wings-bone in always. They were (buffalo) Plenty-10 and NOT battered up...just enough. All others being served appeared to be helped in the same manner and food that was delivered to other tables looked good too. Pricing is VERY fair for such great quality food. Give Spankys a try...I'll be back for sure...Q!
The food is good, homemade and cooked good and fast service. Great atmosphere. Good prices not expensive at all. But the outside needs to be changed it looks like a bar and it's not at all like I said needs allot of improvement on the looks outside to show it's only a restaurant.
Spanky's Diner is a great place to eat. It has a relaxed atmosphere. The staff are very friendly and attentive to the customers. The food is very tasty,
The waitress was polite, sweet and very willing to talk. The food was awesome. Great proportions. Had to bring half home. Will definitely be going back. Oh no paranormal experiences. Maybe next time
Spanky & my mom went to school together. We've never had a bad meal here. Always good food, most is made from scratch. The desserts and rolls are out of this world. Always have to make a stop when we're in St Lawrence Co.
Used to have a better cook but my favorite diner so far and I love that there is still the original 1950s vintage nostalgia look. I'd choose here for lunch and dinner over any of the other diners in Massena and surrounding towns.
Cute hometown diner, friendly staff, plenty of seating, large breakfast lunch and dinner menu. Daily specials, coffee, and desserts. Plus the basement may be haunted if you're into that sort of thing.
Always a pleasant sit down diner expierance.. Nothing fancy.. Just good ole home cooked meals.. I have never left hungry.. And the joy of it all... Very inexpensive.. Ill go back again... Hands down..
Spanky's is the best family restaurant in town here! I now live in Buffalo, but every time I come home this is where I go to eat. The food is always great and the service is as well! Hope was our waitress and is amazing!
I had a very pleasant experience. My food was tasty, quick and priced well. The staff was industrious and the service was prompt and friendly. If you are passing through and need a decent meal without breaking the bank it's the place to go.
This is one of my favorite places in town. Great service, amazing food, and the prices are pretty fair. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served here and almost everything is exactly what you think of for dinner food. The pancakes are the size if the plate or bigger! They also offer takeout which we get every Saturday at work. Do yourself a favor and stop in any day of the week!
I haven't been home in over 10 years and thus place has not changed! Took a trip back in time and had an amazing lunch catching up with old friends. Highly recommended 👌
Home cooking and Great chicken wings! The food is tasty and the servers have great personalities. The cook they currently have is O.K. service is good. At lunchtime you may have a little wait because they get busy
I heard rumors of this restaurant for years from my wife’s family who lives in town and they always say this is the best in town and they were right for sure!! We live in Atlanta and went up visit and I had to try it out and like they said, the food and service was amazing and we will definitely be back when we’re up that way
The food was really good! It really had that good home style dinner feel to it. However the wait was long which is to be expected sometimes from a family restaurant. Everyone was extremely friendly too! If you really want good home cooking you should definitely come here!
Had one of the Breakfast Specials and it was filling! Eggs and bacon were done perfect and the Silver Dollar pancakes were tasty! I ordered the cinnamon raisin toast and was wonderfully surprised how delicious it was! The waitress said that the owner comes in every morning and bakes it fresh! Waitresses were friendly, helpful and efficient!
We were on the hint for a cyte little down home spot while on a long motorcycle ride. Server was FANTASTIC! Food was great overall (and we were hungry). The food came out fast. Very cute little diner in a cute little town way up north. MUST STOP!
This place is a great old time diner with fantastic food. No food in wrappers here, everything cooked to order. Try the fried chicken burger, it is huge. Pair it up with Mac salad and a drink and your good till next me. All the staff is good, but Amber in my favorite by far. She is truly a great server, with a good sense of humor and very good personality, always smiling and happy to help. I am always somewhat disappointed if she isn't there when I stop by. This is not a fast food joint, but it sure serves excellent comfort food. As far as small plates, I have never experienced that problem at Spanky's. Perhaps the small portions are due to the items ordered. Order bird sized meal and that's what you receive. The only drawback is that they close at 8:00 PM. Sometimes I'm in Massena later and can not get a meal
Great food and great service. They were quick making it and it was good and hot. We even ordered dessert to go. The portion size was really good. Definitely will be going back again and next time will schedule a tour. Going to Spanky's is like stepping back I time.🙂🙂
Cool, small town diner. Great Service. I got a chicken parm sandwich. Good eats.
Spanky's Restaurant in Massena Village is a must-visit spot. The old-fashioned atmosphere and excellent service make for a memorable dining experience. Their homemade French fries are a standout, and I highly recommend trying the lumberjack sandwich on the menu. Perfect for anyone exploring this charming village!
Great local diner to get a meal. Friendly wait staff and overall good service!
I just tried out Spanky’s in Main Street in Massena, I asked two days in a row for a breakfast place and this was first choice both times, I had French toast with eggs over easy and right away was impressed because one of those little syrup packers where you need to ask for more, they put a syrup bottle on the table, we also ordered an omelet and a traditional breakfast, everyone was happy with the service and the food, the waitress Elaine was very friendly, I am here for the week and will be back
Spanky's is your typical local owned diner . You can get breakfast here anytime of the day. The waitresses are very friendly and attentive. We eat there about once a week. There has never been a bad meal!!! Everything is home made and comes out piping hot. It is like eating at your grandma's kitchen! The prices are CHEAP! Family oriented place. We do parties there all the time.
I recently had the pleasure of dining at Spanky's, and I can’t say enough good things about this place. From the moment we walked in, the staff made us feel genuinely welcome. Friendly, attentive, and quick with recommendations — they truly go above and beyond to make sure you have a great experience. Now, let’s talk about the food. Every dish we ordered was spot-on. The flavors were bold and fresh, and you could tell the ingredients were high quality. Everything was cooked to perfection. Portion sizes were generous, and presentation was on point. It’s clear that Spanky's is a place that cares — both in the kitchen and on the floor. If you're looking for a spot with delicious food and a warm, inviting vibe, you won’t be disappointed. Can’t wait to come back!
They have some really good breakfast. I like their chicken tenders for lunch.
Food was good and the prices were also a good breakfast price. The waitresses were very nice and all our food came out quickly. The chairs however were uncomfortable.
Good food even if the decor is a little dated. I enjoyed the ceasar salad that I had and my mother thoroughly enjoyed her liver and onions.
A very enjoyable hole in the wall. I really liked the food. I had a simple meal, and it came with toast. The waitresses were awesome. Nothing fancy but worth the stop.
It's a good place for having breakfast. The shakes are amazing, so are the omlets. The staff were very friendly and quick when it came to making the dishes. The onion rings and the fried sweet potatoes are very crunchy. For pork and steak lovers, this is the best spot in Massena but I can't say the same for vegetarians. Over all this is a very good place in Massena
Great congenial and slightly nostalgic 'Lil Rascals" TV fame place to eat. Very good food and portions. Homey service. Recent Sunday May 23rd 2021 dinner rates "one star" had overly salty gravy poured on hot hamburger dinner, no mashed potatoes (had to order baked and mash it myself!) and french onion soup was flat! There must have been different cook/chef working and talkative staffing!
Old time diner. Great comfort food. Daily specials. Breakfast all day. Homemade soups. A little bit of everything. Great wait staff that See's to every detail. You'll feel like a regular the first time you step foot in here. Stop in coffee is always on beer is always cold. Many homemade favorites make this place the number 1 stop in town. And don't even get me started on the tales of the Haunted basement. The owners Spanky and valve are super personable can take any and all feedback in stride.
Stopped here on a Saturday for breakfast and it was a wonderful experience. Stopped back on Sunday and the service was terrible. I had ordered a cinnamon bun and fruit cup. My traveling companions ordered full breakfasts. They got their food in a reasonable amount of time. The food I had ordered ( which did NOT) require any cooking, didnt come out until after my friends had entirely finished their meals. At that time I declined the food...paid for their food and went to McDonald's where I knew I could get food in a timely fashion.
My son and I went went for breakfast Christmas Eve, service was excellent, we just pancakes and home fries and they were good. It was not very busy so food came super quick. It's only very outdated, not that it's a bad thing! Very very very affordable too!!!!
Good food for a great price. It was the first time I had nachos where there was more toppings than nachos.
Spanky’s is a great place to grab a quick bite! It has the classic tiny town dinner look to it, and the food was delicious. 4/5 because the waitress did forget to bring out a water, but overall the service was pretty good compared to other places. Spent around 16 per person with an appetizer and drinks, prices truly cannot be beat in this economy. Placing order to receiving the food was about 7 minutes, so if you need a quick bite this truly is the place. Highly recommend if you are in the Massena area!
Good diner food with great service - very dated - but what i like in a breakfast or lunch diner -
We love go there for Fish Dinner on Fridays. Its the best, among other meals. They also have great specials. One of our favorite places to eat.
It's an okay place it's quite old, plus it's haunted haha if you don't mind then you're okay. We had a party of us along the lines of 12 plus kids, they forgot 1 of our orders. Forgot our waters and straws. They looked pretty nervous to have so many people to serve, maybe their first day not sure their were 3 of them trying to get our orders down. Their was other customers so I was quite confused as to why they had to be all there to take out orders. They had a lot of old pictures, music and TV's. They have enough seating for a lot of people, but the food was good.
Spanky's isn't very impressive. Tables are rustic, but legs show signs of grime and wear. There is also artwork for sale on the walls that just seems to clash with whatever theme they are going for, as well as tie dye shirts on some of the bussers and black shirts for others. The food was okay, we ordered burgers and fried clams. Burgers didn't have any fixings, only cheese, but they were home style and juicy. If you're looking for "Diner in a small town that never recovered from the recession" this is probably where to find that exact vibe.
Friendly atmosphere, laid back environment. Steak and eggs was over cooked and toast was soggy with butter and was inedible. Poutine was really good. Prices were not bad.
The staff is very friendly, very nice hometown feel. But the omelet I ordered wasnt done. I like my onions but not the outside that you peel had to keep taking it out of my omelet and the toast was not very good either. Half of it was burnt to a crisp the other half wasnt even toasted. How do you mess up making toast?
The staff was great, but I'm pretty sure everything I ate was frozen. The peas and carrots tasted like they were cooked in the water of a dog who just had a bath, the coleslaw was a bit under mediocre, the potatoes tasted like instant mashed potatoes, and the Southern Fried Chicken...I'm pretty sure it was just Banquet chicken (don't get me wrong, I love Banquet chicken).
The second visit was not as favorable. I ordered an omelette to go over the phone. Upon arrival at the restaurant, the waitresses were in a huddle and ignored my presence. After I interrupted I was given my order without a word from the staff. Arriving back at the hotel, I opened the container to find a sad omelette and burned toast with no utensils to eat with. Hopefully they were just having a bad day. Original Review Although our experience was limited to an omelet, egg salad sandwich, and fried dill pickle spears, the food and service were great. There are many items on the menu that I would like to try if we were in the area. Being from the South, the folks tended to speak a little fast which required several repeats. Overall, I would definitely visit again.
Had breakfast there, party of 8. Busy place, only 2 waitresses on staff. Food is average at best. The best meal ended up being stuffed french toast, lots of strawberries, right amount of whipped cream, and good cream cheese filling. Steak breakfast special was not that good at all, steak was thin and tough. Decent greasy spoon and one of the better places to go in area. Wouldn't go out of my way for this place, tbh. Definition of average.
I got cheesy scrambled eggs and French toast. The eggs looked gross. They weren't scrambled or cooked thoroughly. They came out with a full piece of cheese sitting on them, not even melted. The toast that came with it was loaded with butter that wasn't melted either. But the French toast was good.
Very sweet waiter staff the cook/owner was not accommodating to help with food restrictions member of our party had celiacs and they would not accommodate to cook separate so there was no cross-contamination, left without eating. Had mashed potatoes on their lunch menu but would not cook it until after 3 p.m.
The food and prices were good, but the service was NOT got the feeling that if you are not a regular customer you are not all that welcome. I won't be going there again. ☹️
The beef and mac soup tasted like chili, the noodles were still a little chewy and the Hash was so greasy it was inedible. We ate three bites of each and left.
This place takes way to long to serve you your food we waited over a hour for are food and they never checked on us for drinks I would never come here again this is uncalled for .
I have had multiple bad experiences here. One time a waitress accidently spit something into my coffee while she was talking. We all saw it and instead of doing anything she ignored it so obviously the coffee sat and went to waste but I still had to pay for it. Another time and a different waitress, acted like we were more of a nuisance than customers. We weren't deciding on a desert fast enough so she proceeded to walk away. The food is fine- (although I've heard otherwise from people who had worked in the kitchen, including someone who was fired for refusing to serve bad hamburger) the price is good. If you want a good meal AND good service head up the road to Wendy's diner. They always do it right
Our take out food was made wrong so I brought it back. The waitress was polite and said they would fix it. Got back home and it still wasn't right. (Deluxe pretzel bun burgers, a little undercooked and missing the bacon, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, & mayo)
Food is good but the service is horrible. Specifically the waitress named Allison, horribly rude with an attitude and would rather sit there and visit with people then carry out food that’s right next to her that people are waiting for. Had to yell across the room for anything we needed because she wasn’t attentive. If you get the blonde waitress named Allison, I advise for you to ask for a different waitress.
I went to Spankys for the first time Saturday and it was very good, aside from the waitress forgetting my kids toast. He didn't want it so no big deal. We went again on Sunday.....big mistake. He ordered the same meal but made a point of asking for the toast....never got it. My sister ordered a cinnamon roll and fruit cup. Our food came and was completely eaten before hers came at all. And it didn't need cooking....so why the delay? No explanation. They ran out of coffee cups so it took about 45 minutes to even get a beverage. It was TERRIBLE. Don't eat there!!
Food came too quick, it was cold , sent it back , took a long while, when it came back it was the same food and still cold, overcooked, and couldn't have been homemade. I had the pizza logs.
This place needs a huge renovation. Inside and outside desperate for a paint job. The food was cold. turkey sandwich was made with tiny little chopped up pieces of meat which made the whole thing fall apart when trying to cut it. My husbands eggs were the worst looking scrambled mess I have ever seen placed on a plate. Looked like it was made by a 5 yr old. Will not return or recommend.
Food isn’t bad but their employee Nick G throws the N-word around like it’s nothing. Literally spews hate speech and racial slurs all over social media and has this place listed on there as well. Wonder if his co-workers or managers care?
Food was nasty the home fries we couldnt eat looked like they took it out of trash was a very dirty place only good part was the waitress
service was ok. Food was horrible. One of the dinners came out after the other three were done eating. Waitress was very nice.
Unfortunate that we were left waiting for drinks people who came in later got service before us. Over charged for food, charged to take tomatoes off.... Wouldn't recommend.
The food was absolutely horrible.water tasted like mildew from a old wash cloth. Turkey was frostbite, stuffing was blan nothing salt and pepper could even fix!!!!needless to say I personally think the cook should stick to making breakfast orders can't mess that up.......
I like spanky's food, and the waitresses are usually great. But the new one needs an attitude adjustment, I found a hair in my container of peanut butter after I spread it on my toast. I informed the waitress, she'd couldn't have cared less. Didn't say one thing, no apologies for it, no price reduction. I always tip well, but definitely not today.
Very bad service. Girlfriend and i ordered the hamburger steak diners which was suppose to come with a bun. So was asked if we wanted the bun said yes blonde waitress decided to go have a smoke outside instead of getting are buns for until meal was almost gone so we didn't want buns. But to start off with creamers were spoiled so after replacing two cups of coffee they decided to replaced out dated creamer's. Never again. Hire some grown up servers might get better service.
OK place for breakfast. Dinner was horrible. I ordered pork chops which came with a steak knife which couldn't cut the chops. I complained and the cook said State law says they have to be well done (they were crispy).
Worst meal ever. Stuffing with the turkey was ice cold. The gravy was cold. The fish was swimming in grease. We were the only ones in the place and took almost 20 minutes to order.
Not very sigma. They fanum taxed the mushrooms from our omelette along with the toast until we got the check. They didnt ask if we wanted anything else or more drink, stuff wasnt warm or fanum tax worthy
Where do I begin? -The first thing that was noted was the inordinant amount of time we waited for anyone to realize we had sat down. We waited 22 minutes before any of the wait staff bothered to say or do anything. One girl who was waiting tables was on her phone most of this time as it was visible. There were other waitresses that were available to take our order as it seemed that there weren't any real sections defined in the diner. -After we ordered and finally got our food, the food was mediocre and bland at best. I ordered pancakes (needs sugar and vanilla in the batter), eggs, sausage, bacon and homefries with homemade bread (proofed too long and needed salt in the dough; very crumbly texture), and my parter ordered steak, sunny side up eggs (all yolks were served broken bits of egg shell remained) , and homefries and a side of bacon. We never received the side of bacon that we ordered and the waitress still tried to charge us for it as if we received it and has to call across the diner to flag her down to have her correct it. -She was also very rude and stood over us until we noticed her with a coffee pot in her hand and then continued to stand there until I said that I wanted more coffee (that was bland too). The coffee was awful, if you could call it that. It was a disappointment for what was touted as the "best" diner in Massena, NY. If I could give this zero stars I would. I have been to a great many diners in and out of NY and this was by far the WORST experience I've ever had. SAVE YOUR MONEY AND YOUR TIME!
Over priced, crappy service and food. Asked to make sure they put onions on my patty melt and they charged me an extra $3.25 for the onions that are supposed to come on the sandwich. Freaking ridiculous, food was crappy, cold
I have been here before and thought it was a decent place but when my family and I went in this time they had a waitress who didn't know what she was doing and was very rude. She brought out 8 year old a cup of "swamp juice" that was full of fruit flies and when we asked for a new one we were told they didn't come from the machine so if we wanted a new one we had to pay for it. They really expected her to drink it full of bugs. We left at that point because we completely disgusted by their attitudes and cleanliness. Eat at your own risk.
We ordered 3 specials, spaghetti, side salad, mozzarella sticks, grilled cheese 2 beers, chocolate milk and sweet tea. Drinks came out quick, salad didn't come out, 30 minutes after ordering, until I watched other people that came in after us getting food and questioned where our appetizers were. I gave them 2 minutes to get food otherwise we were walking. 4 minutes later I asked to cash out for our drinks as we didn't touch the salad and we're charges 15.55 for 2 beers chocolate milk and sweet tea. The excuse given was training a new cook...this doesn't excuse 5 cheese sticks approx 4 to 5 minutes in a fryer that wasn't even put down and a salad taking over 30 minutes to serve.
I felt very unwelcome as an indigenous person getting a meal with some family. We waited at least 15 minutes for the waitress (at least 1 of the 3) to ask us what we’d like to drink. Waited another 10 minutes for only 2 of the 3 drinks to be brought. Another 10 minutes for the one they missed. Once we ordered, the food didn’t take that long. However, it wasn’t that great. We got extremely burnt toast, burnt eggs/omelet, half-cooked meat on the french dip, and overall bland food. To top it all off, we got overcharged for removing an ingredient from the omelet and asking for the cheese to be a certain type. Would not recommend to anyone that’s of color, a.k.a not white. You’d get terrible service, bad attitude, and disappointing food. 0.5/10 and that generous.
Service was horrible. Never got silverware, had to ask. Everyone got served before us when we were here for a while. Never got checked on. All of our food got messed up when it wasn’t busy. Better service at a 1 star hotel in ogdensburg. Just like this place, their food is cold and bland. Who cooks steak with no seasoning. If you want a medium steak, ask for medium rare because they are one step behind. Asked for medium and got a slab of dry well done steak. When things seemed done, the lady couldn’t even do math. Almost spent over 100 for a $30 meal. If I wasn’t leaving for college, I would give them my application. Just because you have rumors of a ghost in your basement, it doesn’t mean your service needs to be ghostly.
I have went to Spankys since I was a kid, now in my 30s. I have to say, the last 4 times I have went there were awful!!! The young waitresses forget you and you literally have to ask for someone to take your order. I have sat there and waited for coffee refills and they never did a round. Today I was served cold toast with the butter just layed on it without being melted. Both my mother and I. I brought it up and asked for new toast. Idk what happen but the staffing has gone to crap and I will not be returning.
I've been going here since I can remember, but it's just not what it used to be. After 3 dissapointments across the last year, I've got to call it quits. Most recently I waited over 2 hours without any interaction from staff after delivering my drink. Left cash on the table for that as I could not get any staff to look my way. Wild. Absolutely absurd to watch people come and go without ever hearing about the food I'd ordered, or what could be delaying it. Prior, the food was just not good. The omelets used to be amazing, the pancakes so fluffy, and the fries so crisp and greasy. It's just dissapointing to watch a local dive in its death throws.
Used to come here when I was a kid - the food used to be good. Came here with my son and I had a 2 egg omlette with cheese, sausage, and toast. His toast was burnt, mine was just bread. See pictures. Can tell the sausage was a very cheap brand. I had coffee and the cream and sugar containers on the table had someone else's left over garbage in the dish. It's very obvious they're just pushing people through to get $$ and they no longer care about the quality of their food or service. Very unfortunate. Oh and they only take cash currently.
