We drive past the Roots Cafe regularly and always wanted to stop by. We finally got a Sunday to do so and let me say, we CANNOT wait to stop by again! The atmosphere is so charming and all the service was prompt and warm. The food was incredible - we both ordered off the breakfast menu. A great first experience, and it will not be the last!
Roots prepare food using high quality, fresh and local ingredients. Typically, places like that are pricey and serve small portions. The portions were large and the price reasonable. The brussel sprout hash was unique and delicious. It's rare for a serving to be so large I can't finish it. This one best me. My wife had the Greek polenta. It balanced a variety of flavors and textures. Don't go to Roots if you want a quick meal. Food this good takes some time to prepare.
This little restaurant is a gem! Nestled in the heart of NYS Finger Lakes wine country, it is great place to dine while enjoying the fall foliage or taking a wine tour. The staff is friendly and helpful from the hostess to the bartender and they all made us feel very welcomed. The lunch menu offered a wide selection of sandwiches and salads. Utilizing the best local grown products and meats. We choose the portobello sandwich and it was out of this world. We also had one of the drink specials, a blood orange martini with cranberry , that was amazing. The decor is eclectic with all of the tables being metal top kitchen tables from the 1950's. It gave you the nostalgic feeling of having a great meal at home. I do suggest, however, that you make reservations. The restaurant is small and popular with limited seating.
I am a big huge fan. The ambiance is great and the food is equally delicious. We loved our servers too, wish I had asked their names.
Great atmosphere / location & decor. Indoor seating and outdoor seating. Only disappointment was ordered an eggplant entree that was supposed to have tahini sauce on it. It did not. When I asked where it was they told me it was cooked into it which is not true so the place is great just don't order that dish cuz you'll be disappointed or ask them if it has a tahini sauce. I'm leaving a dollar amount on the questionnaire on this blog. The price can vary depending on what you have eat and drink.
Worth the drive! Charming decor (farm meets painted lady meets shabby chic). Unique and varied menu. Terrific drinks menu. Situated in sweet Naples NY, on Canandaigua lake. THIS place is exactly what you want if you're looking for a true Finger Lakes outdoor dining lunch with gorgeous views of a vineyard and lovely local wines.
We drove down to Naples today to get some grape pies since we didn’t make it to the festival last weekend and wanted to get brunch as well. I had narrowed it down to 3 places to choose from and ultimately went with Roots cafe and was happy from the minute we walked in the door! This place is adorable! The historic house is decorated with true antique and vintage pieces throughout and was so completely charming, I even told the host how cute the place was when she sat us. The food was fantastic, my dining partners had the mac and cheese which I tried- fabulous, fresh and flavorful, the sausage gravy which I did not try but looked and smelled amazing, and I had the shamboozle (sp?) breakfast sandwich which was so oooey gooey cheesy delicious, but the fries that came with it were out of this world! I can’t wait to come back and try something else! Be aware, the website says reservations recommended, we took a chance and had none but apparently got lucky that they weren’t too busy, or just hit the right time maybe. I’d say worth the wait even if you had to though.
Amazing food and atmosphere, can't wait to come back!
Beautiful cafe adjacent to a vineyard and view of the surrounding Bristol hills. There were several vegan/vegetarian options available on the menu. I had the black bean sweet potato burger with a kale salad. The salad consisted of wilted kale in a citrus, gingery dressing. Unusual and wonderful. My only complaint about the burger is that the burger didn't hold together and was difficult to eat.
The foos here is always exceptional. Sunday Brunch is my favorite. I highly recommend their Bloody Mary’s and Poutine.
Such a cute place! The restaurant is located in a house right next to a winery. Great beer and wine selection. The staff were really friendly and patient, and very knowledgeable about vegan options. Good sweet potato black bean burger (vegan), breakfast sandwich, and chicken pesto sandwich! The local kombucha was also great. Shaded outdoor seating too!
Great tastefully rustic farmhouse restaurant featuring cooked to order daily specials sourced from local farmers. Always a great selection of meals plus tasty deserts from just down the street.
Soooo good. Really. Tasty fresh awesome. We're traveling with a picky eating teen and she ordered the Roots burger. I ordered the salad knowing I would be eating her burger, since it had onions, garlic aoli and slaw on it. I got one bite she begrudgingly allowed me. So good. Husband got the curried chicken salad. All the way to our next stop, he couldn't stop talking about it. And what I loved best was the beer and blueberry soup. So good and how you you be sad with this in front of you?
What an absolute treasure this place is. It sits as a brightly coloured gate at the entrance of Naples, when you arrive from the North. There is a winery building in the back (Inspire Moore) while Roots Restaurant occupies the main building and a tent out front. It sits among vineyards making it the perfect wine country respite. The decor is a welcoming combination of industrial, antique, rustic and shabby chic, executed flawlessly by a discerning eye with deeply developed sense of style. Shout out to the flower pots this year- beautiful colours. The menu is farm to table. The ingredients are always fresh, the recipes creative, the execution flawless. We always order too much because the leftovers make a great lunch the next day. The service is small town genuinely friendly. The place is full of good will, you can tell it is a healthy place to work by the positive attitude of the staff. Roots Cafe has long been one of our staples and it is treasures like these that anchor us to the Finger Lakes region.
Sierra was such an amazing server and they took care of our bachelorette party. Food was delicious, they handled all of our food allergies, and such a great atmosphere. Highly recommend.
A must, even if you’re not in the area. Phenomenal atmosphere, service, and food. I can’t even express how great this place is. You won’t be disappointed.
Food was phenomenal, waitresses were very nice.
amazing food, just liked up food near me and this was the first place. the owner sat us down and was amazing, our waiter was extremely nice. the food wa amazing i just got a plain burger asked for medium rare and it came out amazing just how i like it. all around perfect place to eat, desserts are a little expensive.
What a quaint little café. It appears to be an older home. Nice individual rooms for about 4 tables. My wife and I really love the decor. It's a very relaxed kind of atmosphere. The waitress was a gem, she was very nice to us. Attentive without being overbearing. I can't recommend Roots Cafè enough. We love it!
We arrived at a very busy time of the year, were seated quickly despite no reservation, and put our order in, the server, Mary, was great, there was a delay due to a mixup so they comped us the whole meal, but the flavor was so great I would have been more than happy to have paid full price regardless of the wait. Stellar food, great atmosphere, and excellent service, 5 stars, we will be back again! We had the brisket sandwich with Kimchi and the Vine burger with goat cheese and a grape compote. Amazing flavor combinations from local farms and vendors.
A must stop if you are in Naples. Food and service are wonderful. Food is always fresh and delicious. Staff are warm and friendly.
Out behind Roots is their gift shop and winery. Very cute and cozy. The staff was so warm and friendly and helpful. The wines were beautiful inspired bottles. A nice collection of gifts, wines and some hard liquor. The cafe smelled amazing but we had already ate.
The drive and environment had a great feeling to it ...the food was really good .I mean I only had burgers but they Tasted great!.. cooked right nice bun pairing ..I even ate the kale side salad 🥗 it was good ...add to that it was grape fest and it made for perfect place to stop ....im sure its great and far less hectic during non festival week ends
Great service! They really go out of their way to make you feel welcomed and appreciated. They helped my father-in -law with his wheelchair so he could sit outside. The food was good, too. I especially loved the black bean and sweet potato burger with seasoned fries, and I'm not even vegetarian. The new Asian bowl was okay. So I gave 4 stars.
This place is a gem at the southern tip of Canandaigua lake. It really embodies all of the local charm of the quaint little town of Naples. From the menu that features many items that were grown, baked, or sourced very close to the restaurant, to the locals who work and cook there, the freshness shines through on their seasonal menus. The menu isn't extensive, but it doesn't have to be. Everything from burgers, tacos, stew, braised meats, and several vegan options will allow just about any person to find something they'll enjoy. Pro-tip, get a side of fries if your meal doesn't come with them. Tasty craft cocktails, wine from the winery next door, and craft beer options for those who enjoy some fun libations. Lots of fun desserts made in house or by local bakers will round out your meal if you have room left at the end.
As a local I continue to bring my out of town visitors to Roots, as well as fulfill my own cravings... frankly I have NEVER been disappointed! The menu continues to change with the season and is ALWAYS absolutely delicious! The staff is friendly and the nostalgic atmosphere is so cozy! Definitely 5+ stars!! Beautiful view from our table!
Called when restaurant wasn’t open and left a message for a reservation. They returned our call, much to our joy, as soon as they opened. The harvest platter had 3 types of cheese: blue, black truffle and a mystery one that was tasty, 3 types of purée summer squash, carrot and black beans, pickled carrots and warm flatbread. The brisket melted in the coffee gravy and the saltiness was a nice foil for the sweetness of the pears and roasted carrots it went with. The pasta pasta’s star was the Brussels sprouts. The rosemary honey cocktail was the perfect blend of flavors and booze.
Recommended by the locals and true to their word the best food! We shared the poutine fries and had the ribeye. Probably one of the best meals I’ve ever had. Drinks were delicious too. Tried the sangria, the jalapeño pineapple margarita and the gincident were all soooo good. Highly recommend. Stopped by inspire Moore winery before dinner and that was great too. Definitely found out new spot!
Roots is a favorite amongst my social circle, and for good reason. The food and drinks are always delicious. We went for brunch yesterday and sat outside with a beautiful view of the nearby vineyard. I got the blueberry basil French toast; it was delicious and a generous helping. In colder weather, the interior is cozy and retains much of the original charm of the building. Owned and operated by some of the friendliest people I know.
First off - the bartender that made my Manhattan from their drink specials menu; best Manhattan I've had! Showed up for an evening of music with Tyler Westcott and Brendan Gosson; got to witness some true porch picking once the microphones were turned off and the night started to quiet down. If there is a business that embodies the true nature and spirit of Naples - it's Roots.
Roots cafe has some of the best food I have ever had. It's easy to find a decent meal, this place is so much more than that. Everything is exceptional, and I am always shocked by how even something as simple as a salad can be incredible. There's definitely a magician back in their kitchen!!
Wish I could give 10 stars. Vegan Sunday brunch with Brussel sprout potato hash, add sweet potato and black bean burger. And they're playing Muddy Waters and Buffalo Springfield on the speaker... Theresa was so kind, welcoming, with great service! If you're thinking of coming here, don't hesitate!
Amazing restaurant. Last night for dinner I had a Langoustine Agnolotti (homemade pasta stuffed with langoustine and shaved fennel) in a meyer lemon and caper sauce that absolutely blew my mind. An advanced dish. We had to come back… Today for brunch we had a breakfast pizza and I had a burger (pictured). There was a slight mistake and my burger went to the wrong table. Acting like a michelin starred outfit, they quickly acknowledged the mistake and my next drink suddenly appeared and “on the house”. After working in several restaurants in NYC and moving to the FLX, it is rare to find this caliber of food, drink, and best of all, hospitality. Eat here. Make a reservation. You’ll be happy!
Wow! Roots Cafe was a real delight! The food was more inventive and delicious than expected. The salad special and especially the fries were outrageously good. Although we had to wait for a table, there is an attached winery and plenty of outdoor seating to hang out at. Excellent service as well. A Naples gem!
Amazing outdoor service with quality ingredients made fresh to order. Gluten and dairy free options. Made to order…they said they know their menu 5 minutes before opening. Talk about fresh….
My wife and I stopped in at Roots Cafe after stopping at several wineries. We had to wait 30minutes for a table, but it was well worth our wait. Service was friendly and prompt. And our food, salad with chicken and the black bean sweat potato burger were spot on!! Plus the view was epic! If you are in the area make sure Roots Cafe is part of your journey!!
An excellent restaurant, the place is cool inside with a unique menu many locally sourced items and wine. A full bar and many interesting foods come check it out and leave a note in the drawer when you go. The servers here a very friendly and are happy to make recommendations from their great menu and the food is great. We stopped in for Sunday brunch and tried the black bean sweet potato burger (pictured) and the sausage gravy and biscuits (pictured) both made on site and very good. We tried some of the wine and the house mixed tea as well many unique things to like.
Got their apricot chicken sandwich with the cranberry zucchini salad, and my husband got their house burger and fries- everything was amazing! Truely a meal we plan to return for.
An amazing eclectic dining experience with such a diverse and fun menu. Would highly recommend a visit. Amazing desserts too !! Staff are great as well.
We had the joy of dining at Roots a couple weeks ago while visiting Naples. We sat on the deck area outside and enjoyed the beautiful views of the vineyard and hills. Our server, Sierra, was so kind and attentive. The food and atmosphere were excellent! I enjoyed the veggie burger while my husband had the risotto which was fragrant and perfectly textured. My veggie burger came with a heap of fries, seasoned to perfection and great for sharing. No pictures bc we were thoroughly enjoying and forgot haha but trust that everything was great. Can’t wait to visit again next year!
Cozy spot to get some delicious locally sourced food. I loved the touch of real flowers on each table, just adds to the list of locally sourced goods and support of local business. The food was outstanding and worth every penny. Staff was welcoming and attentive. Highly recommend checking this out if you're staying around/passing through Naples. The brisket sandwich was outstanding and their roots burger is bursting with flavor. Great fries, too.
Great spot. Highly recommend. We came for brunch. The server was not friendly and barely checked on us. She was the one with tattoos and short hair. Eventually a nice server finished our service. She was very helpful and nice. Not sure why some people are servers if they hate everyone and everything. But hey.......
Highly recommend going here if you're in the Naples area, the food is divine and the service is incredible! Having local food be served is definitly the best. The small charm atmosphere was cozy and relaxing, especially after proposing to your love 🙂 We're going to come back again to the area just for this restaurant!
Few restaurants have me thinking about their food days later... this is one of this restaurants. The food is next level... I could eat here every day. My compliments to the chef. Went here with a group of friends for dinner. Was not sure what to expect being in a small town. We were all pleasantly surprised with the food. Everything was fantastic! The best dinner we've had in quite some time. I ordered the Roots Burger and the Risotto. The butter spread that was on this burger was amazing, no ketchup needed. The burger was cooked to perfection. The risotto taste amazing... my wife ordered the pulled pork enchiladas, also delicious. Friends ordered the bone in pork chop... also amazing! If you are a local or just traveling through I would definitely recommend stopping here for dinner. The service was great, and the atmosphere was relaxed. Expect about $30-$40 per person.
Great atmosphere and food and if you're outside, you can literally smell the grapes! The view was gorgeous! The service was good but we had a large group and one person didn't get their food until 10-15 minutes later after the rest of us and there was no discount given or way to make it right for the one person. I would definitely eat there again though.
We stopped at Roots Café while visiting town for some fall excursions, and what an amazing find! The atmosphere, the people, and the food were all incredible. Everything was so fresh and delicious, and our server Alex was outstanding — friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. The entire experience was unmatched, and we can’t wait to come back tomorrow for breakfast!
Love how ROOTS Cafe offers farm to table dining. This is a unique restaurant in which hostess will not inform you of wait time for tables but comes out to seat coustomers when tables are clean and ready. Wait long was minimal considering every table was taken during our afternoon visit. While waiting in line you may witness food deliveries. You might see Lots of fresh farm veggies as well as other healthy food being delivered through the front door by using hand trucks through the local farms as you are in line waiting for a table. This gives ROOTS Cafe its unique personality in a sense by seeing all the healthy good produce which you will be dreaming about eating. This not only makes it more of a personal unique atmosphere for the coustomer but also makes for a personal welcome and it leaves for a feeling of comfort and being at home. We took what ever table was readily available and enjoyed the heated out door tent which provided a beautiful view of the vineyard and hills on a cool beautiful fall day. Tables were set with fresh flowers and spaced adequately. Menu provided wine IPA/ beer selection as well as a nice selection of non-alcholic drinks. Entree as well as soup and appetizers change daily according to seasonal produce. Roots cafe has a fb page which you may check out as far as menu items are available. Sour dough bread is offered daily for choice of bread but the hostess mentioned count of sour bread is actually countless seeing as they go through so many loaves. I started out with a cup of pumpkin soup as appetizer of choice. It was a creamy bowl of deliciousness with the right amount of pumpkin flavor. The sunflower seeds was an excellent topper. Moving on for Entree choice was the polenta sandwich piled high with polenta egg green peppers maple bacon green peppers lettuce onion. The cafe does not believe in being skimpy with its sandwiches! The roll was fresh soft and gave it the sandwich the added compliment. Server was excellent. Fast efficient and helped in answering questions about the menu as well as offered a few suggestions on where I could buy sourdough bread locally. Parking is limited with a small lot free parking is offered on the street. Prices are excellent for what you are receiving regarding menu items: Creative cooking with healthy fresh wholesome good food and large size portions. And as I come to concluding the review of Roots cafe Id like to mention I love the concept of not only networking with local business as well as farmers in the community but actually buying the farmers food to make the best of dining for the public. This is the type of business concept I grew up with. Community. And by witnessing Roots cafe introducing farm to table through the restaurant I can see it at work and it is what appears to be a thriving restaurant with hard work providing fresh local farmer produce as well as creating delicious meals for community and the public to enjoy. Thank you Roots Cafe. I look forward to my next visit
Food was excellent you can tell the chef really cares about the food. I had curried chicken salad and they put it open on lettuce instead of the wrap for me zucchini and yellow squash with shallots. Service was great. Price was good atmosphere nice but a little loud to me. I think it's just because the layout. And it would not stop me from going back again which I certainly intend to do. Also I'm a decaf coffee drinker and they had very good decaf coffee probably Swiss water decaf. I highly recommend the Roof Cafe.
A superb dining experience in a relaxed atmosphere, with friendly, attentive service. Ample selection of cocktails, beer and wine and an eclectic menu with interesting choices. I had the bone-in pork chop with roasted potatoes and peach salsa. My friend ordered the enchiladas. Both were cooked to perfection.
My husband and I ate here last night for the first time and it was a wonderful dining experience. We visit Naples three times in the summer for the performances at Bristol Valley Theater and usually eat at The Naples Hotel but always mean to visit this restaurant and we’re sure glad we finally got there. The atmosphere is just so lovely, staff friendly and accommodating with excellent food! If I lived closer we would be regulars here no question about!! It’s farm to table and let me tell you the freshness just oozes out of the food. We’re recent transplants from NYC to Liverpool, NY so we can be tough to please but these guys nailed it. You need to go.
LOVED this place!! We came in from out of town to eat there. We had no idea it was so popular and had no reservations. They worked us in and seated us. The atmosphere is wonderful. I would describe it as a country chic with an industrial/steam punk side. It's in a renovated older house and also has outside seating. Some of the tables had drawers and inside customers have taken to writing on their paper napkin rings. So interesting to read together! The food was excellent. Top notch. We were there for Sunday brunch. The service was extremely good considering they were packed. I would highly recommend this place!!
It took a bit to get seated but after that we got service instantly. Everyone was super friendly. The food was incredible and the portions were huge. I got the French toast and it was huge I could only eat half! It was some of the best French toast I have had and everything including the strawberries, whipped cream, and maple syrup tasted so fresh. Only thing is that it took a bit longer than preferred to get seated. One tip for people coming is that if you want to sit outside you have to reserve a table.
Top tier dining experience. Locally sourced everything. Menu changes daily based on what they've got. Chefs here are geniuses. Offerings are multi-cultural without losing any quality. Drinks are creative and unique, and taste amazing, so it's not just quirky for the fun of it either. Atmosphere is great. Very friendly staff. We were inside and it was quiet, outdoor area might be louder. Truly a must visit restaurant. If I lived closer, I'd be here every week.
Wow- what a truly awesome place. Staff is extremely friendly and provides excellent recommendations. The food is the perfect balance of sophisticated flavor profiles and comfort food. Everything we ordered was prepared perfectly and was delicious. Additionally, in spite of being quite busy (the grape festival was going on) service was quick and attentive. Also, lovely ambiance and the restaurant is surrounded by a beautiful vineyard…. What a true gem! Oh yea- it was really cool to find a bunch of random notes left in the drawer of our table by previous patrons. Definitely worth a visit!
Roots cafe is a gem. An eclectic atmosphere with a spirited service staff who has a passion for delivering local food. I typically get the burger. This evening, i went for the special dish, the pork chop, and it didn't disappoint. Freshly sliced, moist on the inside with a crisp exterior. The risotto was cooked to perfection, with enough fluff to absorb the pork broth. White beans and tomatoes were a great touch.
Start from location: plenty of parking on the street, live music stage in the place next door Now to the food and service: Service was quick and very friendly . The food, I ordered the seasonal salad with feta, grapes, crystalized ginger and greens- it was fresh and delicious, brisket sandwich with kimchi was very good and the hand cut seasoned fries were so so tasty . For dessert I ordered a coconut and berries cake, ate it at home,it was not too sweet and just the right thing to finish off this meal. If you are coming as a group -recommend to make reservations in advance since the place gets full quickly
We were greeted very warmly but told we had to be done by 7 because there was another reservation. I made a reservation earlier in the week. We ordered cocktails and a delicious appetizer. A few minutes later we ordered our dinner. Our dinner came when we were just half way through our appetizer. That doesn’t normally happen. Unfortunately, from that point forward we felt rushed. Dinners were fine. It would have been much more relaxing to have been able to pause between courses. We may have enjoyed a glass of wine or a beer. We really like Roots and tell our friends about the delicious food. We’re very disappointed to have been so rushed. They lost another round of drinks and more.
A great little cafe and the Heart of Naples. Definitely not a place you can just walk into for their dinner service, so call ahead and make a reservation. We went on a Saturday night and waited quite a long time for our food, nearly 45 minutes. The quality was great, I really enjoyed my Roots Burger and loved their variety of beers. There is sitting inside and outside, but I prefer outside so you can watch the hummingbirds!
Stopped in for lunch and were welcomed by a friendly hostess. Indoor and outdoor seating available. Clean and well designed space. Good selection of lunch specials and vegetarian options. I enjoy a seasonal salad. My husband had a brisket sandwich. The french fries really stole the show. Went out back to the Vinyard for wine slushies with a view.. Would love to come back
We loved the atmosphere. The service was fantastic. The drinks were creative and tasty. The food selection was tantalizing, eclectic, high-quality and mostly, quite tasty. The only reason I didn’t give 5 stars is my dish was way over-salted, almost to the point of being inedible. But for that, it would have been delicious and I would have given 5 stars. Still, I wouldn’t hesitate to return or recommend it. The brisket tacos were fantastic! Give them a try.
We went to Roots Cafe for a birthday party and had a great time. The atmosphere is cozy and they had live music playing outdoors which was an added bonus. When we arrived we had a chance to stop at the bar before going to our table. They had a short list of craft cocktails many of which we tried and they were all good. When we moved on to our table the waitress was friendly and accommodating. The food was excellent and no one had any complaints! I had a beef brisket along with their wings. I would definitely go again to try out the pork and a few other cocktails!
Saturday night dinner - extremely satisfied. Mushroom poutine shared as an appetizer - Umami! Everything wonderfully prepared - the butter basted pork chop with sauteed kale and peach salsa (pictured) was an evening special and truly delicious - all flavors coming together perfectly. Homemade desserts to end the evening - we will return!
The food was really good! I have a few minor complaints (burgers were too thick which made them cooked inconsistently and bacon jam was all gristle!) but the curry chicken salad and chickpeas were amazing! My kid got stung by a sweatbee in the waiting lobby right by the door. She was fine and it could have happened anywhere so not the restaurant's fault! But it'd be nice to have a heat lamp for waiting outside. Although waiting at the wine bar is a great option for those into that! I can't believe we had a 45 minute wait on a Wed afternoon at 1:30! No festivals or anything going on that I knew of. Just super busy, so be prepared! Alcoholic drink menu is great. The Gincident was so delicious. Definitely worth a try. The outdoor patio was warm, but definitely lacking the same cozy indoor vibes. Maybe a few more plants or ceiling drapes could help. I'd recommend Roots for visitors, especially!
Location and view of the mountain and winery were awesome. Service was ok. We had lunch at noon on a Thursday, so it was not busy at all. The food was not good at all. I had the gyro and my husband had the chicken/pesto panini. The chicken in both dishes was rubbery and could not be chewed. So we just removed the chicken and finished the sandwiches without. As far as quantity- a lot of reviews I read talked about the skimpy portions, but I can say we had PLENTY of dry rubbery chicken. Anyway, really cute place but not good food.
So disappointing! We had our first date at Roots Cafe years ago, so for years we ate there every month to celebrate our anniversary--and always loved it! We had not been there for about a year, so we scheduled a Day-After-Valentine's Day date. The restaurant was very cold, but yes, I know it is winter. We ordered a whole bottle of wine and the waitress brought it to us already uncorked (out goes the presentation and the joy of having a bottle uncorked just for you). I am sure the waitress was new; she was very nice but clearly inexperienced. The soup and the dessert were delicious (hence the 2-star rating), my salmon was edible-tasteless, but my husband's stew had only TWO small pieces of carrots, not a single potato, some starchy bread-like rounds floating in what was mostly a thin broth with grizzle and little actual meat. He didn't tell me until we were ready to leave because he said he didn't want to ruin our date--probably also because he didn't want to be embarrassed by me asking "Where's the beef?" This is so unfortunate! We have been recommending Roots Cafe for years to friends and family and looked forward to every one of our monthly dates there. Now we only have the memories of our earlier visits to savor... UPDATE: Per Roots’s response to my review, i reached out to them via Messenger, twice. Unfortunately, nobody followed up or replied.
Normally I’m very happy and impressed with the food here but it appears that lunch and dinner are as different as night and day. I was seriously disappointed in the burger that was brought to me looking like meatball, I was told by the server this was how the “chef” makes it at dinner. The burger was about a quarter pound smaller than I expected and when I asked to have it remade properly it was brought back to me butterflied and double cooked. Big thumbs down to the kitchen on this slow Sunday dinner.
We were really excited to try this place since we haven’t been very impressed with a lot of the local spots in the finger lakes and they had such great reviews. First, you only get one coffee refill on the house, the rest are a dollar each… and I’m fairly certain I got cheap drip coffee (tasted like Folgers) so idk how they’d lose money on that. It’s a weird flex for a place that sells $20 burgers. Speaking of the burgers… the burger was actually just a softball sized meatball, no resemblance to any burger I’ve ever seen. I initially ordered a brunch dish that had 2 sunny side eggs but I wanted my eggs scrambled. The waitress informed me that they can’t make any substitutions, which is odd considering every single dish that featured eggs had sunny side eggs, which I don’t like… so I guess I’m just never going to be able to order anything with eggs there. This place is in the middle of nowhere and such a hassle to get to and find parking at that the only logical explanation I can come to is that they’re doing just fine with their regulars who like their fries coated in 17 lbs of dill and salt (the only way to get French fries there by the way; don’t worry you can always get zucchini and cranberry salad if you don’t want to go digging through a salt mine for some fries) and they aren’t really worried about scaring off tourists. I hate leaving bad reviews, I rarely (if ever) do it, but this place worked really hard to prove that even three stars would be a stretch. The silver lining is that anybody who wants an undercooked ball of beef or raw eggs will love this place and probably think it’s well worth the drive to pay for their coffee refills and enjoy their raw brunch.
Very nice atmosphere and charming place. Super slow seating (no one even acknowledged us for over 10 minutes when we came in, kind of odd!). Service was also really slow given the amount of staff and the amount of other people there. The food was OK, but the service ruined the vibe and the experience. The winery outback is awesome, and we had excellent service there! We highly recommend checking that out.
I’m confused at what their idea of a hamburger is. First of all, I ordered it rare and it came out med well but, it was shaped like a meatball. I did not send it back which I should have but I didn’t want to have to wait for a new one that would more than likely have come out the same shape. My wife ordered a tuna melt that came out cold and with no cheese. She said it tasted good but it was not what she ordered. I doubt very much that we will be back. 🙁
