Shake Shack offers consistently good burgers and shakes, with friendly staff often mentioned by name. The location is very busy and crowded, especially during peak hours and near the Natural History Museum. Limited seating is a common issue.

I'm from New Zealand and had this place recommended by a friend. Visited here back at the start of April while there were still many covid restrictions. Came with a group of friends and they were able to get us a table downstairs all to ourselves. Food got to us fast and tasted so gooood. Loved the burgers and the shakes. The service was amazing right from the beginning, I honestly felt like we were royalty or something. Each one of the staff I interacted with were so nice and friendly. My friends agreed too after we left. They went above and beyond to make our experience at Shake Shack the best.
I had previously had a really bad experience at another Shake Shack, but this time it was absolutely fantastic. The staff was attentive and kind—special shoutout to Jasmine, who was incredibly friendly, genuinely caring, and made sure every customer felt welcome. The burger was delicious, the fries were perfect, and thanks to Jasmine, I’ve completely changed my mind about Shake Shack. Highly recommend!
Same awesome menu as their other locations. Although this places seemed particularly crowded just times I visited. I tried the burger with the deep fried mushroom for the first time and total fell in love! It was absolutely stuffed with cheese that was perfectly melted. The panko breading was crispy - a great balance to the gooey inside. I think that next time I would add bacon, simply because I can. There's a restroom and additional seating downstairs. But because there are only two single restrooms, I line is likely to form and run up the skinny set of stairs. Don't forget to check out their special concrete or milkshake because different locations offer different flavors. When I visited, only this location was offering a concrete in honor of the current Shakespeare in the Park Play that was only available for that month. So fun! I would also recommend the Bacon Cheese Fries!
I must say the General Manager smoothed things over with me and I am glad!!!!! That's why I give them 5 stars. Pleasing customers and listening attentively is key. This location was spot on. I ordered a double stack with cheese for myself and a single for my son along with a Vanilla milkshake and french fries. My food was delicious until I reached the halfway mark with my burger and disvovered red meat after ordering a well done burger. I specifically asked the cashier to burn it if need be. LoL!!!! So i threw it away after taking a pic of course. But i went up to the counter to let one of the Staff know about disatisfaction and while I had one foot out the door and my hand pushing the door, the Manager asked me to come back inside to talk to him about my experience and utterly apologized. He offered to make me knew food to go and I declined. Then he asked me to hang on a bit. And he returned with coupons more like vouchers for a next visit at any location.
Food is really good the service was a little bit slow but understandable. For a shake shack, it's an amazing waiting time. Coming here again
I feel about Shake Shack burgers the same way I do about gold Ferrero Rocher chocolates: I'd eat 'em non-stop if I could. These burgers feel like they're melting in your mouth! Pair it with a shake and cheese fries, mmm. The upper west side location is awesome and clean. Baby put herself in a corner, a cozy spot away from people with a nice street view. Recommend this location. Enjoy!
Came over to the shake shack after some time at the near by museum. Initially, there was no seating and it felt a little crowded and tight (it is NYC, so to be expected), but a very kind worker (very very tall — if it helps attribute the praise to the right worker) told us there was seating downstairs, and cleaned a table for us to sit down. He checked in on us MULTIPLE times and was so incredibly genuine and helpful. He helped us with refills and had a smile on his face, calmly and quietly moving through what was otherwise a happening and potentially intimidating environment. He was the calm in the storm, LOL. The wind beneath our burgers! He deserves all the praise in the world! Months later and I still think about how kind he was. Give that man a promotion! He’s an excellent worker and representation of shake shack. It was September 8th and he was bussing tables. Mushroom Burger was pretty good.
This wasn't the first time I walked into a shake shack, but the first time in NYC! I decided order a thing which hadn't had it before! Shroom burger something like that!!! I'm not sure of the name of this buger, but I'm one hundred percent sure that it is made with mushroom. It's so tasty!!!! The fries is always good!
As this was our first time in NYC…we had to have a culinary classics: Shack Shack. As Californians, we had to compare this burger to In & Out. They are both amazing…but the flavors are SO very distinct, it’s not something we could separate. In & Out has a specific flavor. Shake Shack is slightly saltier and a smash burger so you get these delicious crusty bits. We had the double served straight up, with the chocolate malt and after careful consideration both agreed that Shake Shack came out ahead by a nose. I love a good chocolate malt, and this one was stellar. We visited on Columbus Day and the place was swamped so we had to wait about 15 min for our order but the staff handled it with Grace and friendliness. Kudos! We took our order across the street to one of the many benches and ate with the local delivery guys at the next bench. Something I HIGHLY recommend.
Fantastic spot for a great burger! I recommend the double SmokeShack! It has just the right amount of spice. The flavour in these burgers are amazing. The place was packed as it was lunchtime, however service was extremely quick and polite. Like with any NYC spot, be patient and assertive if you want to get your hands on a table.
Two of your waiters Lerone & Jessica were amazing. We went down to the lower level & they cleaned our tables, refilled our drinks & were extremely professional. If every Shake Shack has service like this, I will always return. The place was clean and the food was excellent! Thank you Jessica & Lerone for making our experience a great one!!
An affordable great burger! Had a craving and came here would recommend for a bite(could upper small but it really filled me up), service can be a bit slow but it doesn't really matter Beware of limited sitting
Hands down this is the best hamburger in town. Yes, you’ll have to wait in line. And yes you’ll have to wait for a table (there are also tables downstairs). But the place is welcoming and their food and shakes are delicious. You can also download their app to avoid waiting in line to give your order.
I had a great experience at Shake Shack! The atmosphere was relaxed, and the tables were impressively clean, which made it even more enjoyable. The food was fantastic—the SmokeShack was juicy, the fries were crispy, and the ShackSauce added a perfect touch. Every bite hit the spot. The service was quick and friendly, and overall, it was a perfect spot to satisfy a burger craving. Definitely recommend for anyone looking for a delicious, casual meal! I enjoyed the SmokeShack w/ avocado, truffle fries, and a speciality milkshake for the holidays. Give it a try yourself!
Really enjoyed the burgers! The strawberry lemonade was too sweet for my taste but other than that, the flavor was spot on. It’s a great stop before or after the Natural History museum for hungry adults or kids.
Was there on a semi-holiday (Yom Kippur) for lunch and it was very busy - lot of families with school-aged kids - so our order for 5 was ready in twice as much time as estimated (I ordered online). Almost didn't realize the online orders are not picked up from the front counter where dining-in order come out. But I talked to a staff member and they were helpful. Good service and hard-working attitude by staff team here. Seating is decent - two levels of seating. And didn't wait long to use bathroom. But it can be crowded!
We walk by Shake Shack a lot. The first time we entered there, Sarah greeted us kindly. We felt very welcomed and all the staff were friendly. Sarah worked diligently to guide us place an order and bring us our order. The burgers and drinks were delicious. I appreciated the fresh vegetables on the burgers so my picky little eaters will eat veggies together with the tasty cheese and hamburger patties. The tables were clean. Definitely coming back for more.
If you’re a vegetarian, the veggie burger is pretty good for less than $10. The fried onions made it so tasty. My family ordered their own burgers and crinkle cut fries. The server here was so sweet. She brought our food to the table and genuinely said, Welcome to Shake Shack. Another server came around checking on every table and even brought a baby seat to a family who just arrived. I really appreciated the kindness, it goes a long way to make someone’s day.
This place is a fantastic burger 🍔 joint! Just like all of their spots in NYC 🗽, Shake Shack on the UWS serves a wonderful selection of delicious 🤤 burgers, sandwiches 🥪, fries 🍟, and more! Their crown 👑 jewel 💎 is definitely the shakes ! 🥤 Get the Vanilla Shake - it's absolutely amazing! 🤩 Service is super quick. ⏲️ I wish I came here more often!
This is a great Shake Shack. As soon as we entered the manager Natasha greeted us at the door and lead us to the kiosk to order our food. The restaurant is clean and the food was delicious. It was my birthday and Natasha made me feel very special. I will definitely be returning here, and I love this area.
We all know what it is, Shake Shack is consistently good but this is about shouting out the staff. Last Saturday (8/12) around 2pm there was a logjam of people in the lobby, elbow to elbow. It was impossible to create an orderly line but the staff did a good job sorting us all out. Naturally, in a high pressure environment like that there will be conflict and a little ruckus broke out in the kitchen..which was quickly put down by who I’m assuming was the manager. She firmly set everyone straight without freaking out and the machine kept rolling. Good work 👍🏼
This Shake Shack is located right next to the American Natural History Museum, that’s why we decided to stop here to grab a quick lunch before heading in. The staff immediately welcomed us with a smile and directed us to the kiosks to order. We just had a couple burgers and fries. Everything was good, not sophisticated or anything, simple but good! The fries were swimming in cheese which for us was a bit too much but that’s absolutely personal taste. We paid roughly 20$ for a satisfying and filling lunch, great stop!
Long line was no worry. It was quicker than we thought till burgers and bacon cheese fries were made for us two. But, what's harder was to find a table inside the shop. For our next visits (in sunny day) - my best bet is order to-go, then find a bench outside nearby or in the central park.
The staff is completely overwhelmed and they're spinning in circles and confusion on the cooking line because so many people have ordered and more people keep coming in! It's wild! Perhaps this location could consider putting a limit on the number of customers that it serves at one time. Feels like corporate greed when you pay nine dollars for a milkshake and you can't even get it because they've committed to too many customers. Feel bad for the staff here. They were very friendly and trying hard under such demands.
This place is super busy... but must mean it’s pretty good! I ordered a Smoke Shack which is a Dirty, Fat & Juicy Cheese burger 🍔 with Bacon 🥓, teamed up with tasty & crunchy crinkle cut fries 🍟- the perfect recipe for a heart attack 😝 but it tasted soooo good hahahaha Friendly & reasonably quick service,
Our 4th time in NY. We just wanted a hot dog, after visiting the Hayden planetarium. They have real beef hot dogs. Delicious, although I would rather have my hot dog hot, not luke warm. But taste wise, delicious 😋. All personnel gives you a warm smile though , that compensated the h dog temp issue. I was impressed how kind, care and attentive they were. We really enjoyed the experience. Thanks Shake Shack personnel!
Tried the Shake Shack on Columbus and theres no complaints from me with the exception you can not eat inside (Sept. 24, 2021), unlike the Shake Shack on 86th. I had a Cheese Burger, crispy French Fries and a Chocolate Malt. It was juicy and good. The staff was helpful and polite. If im in the area I will return. I would have gave it 5 stars if seating was allowed inside.
It took a while to get the food because there was a long line waiting. The AC was blasting out cold air. And the music was really loud. The manager told me only the volume of the music could be changed, because the AC was set to take care of the machines. The burger was as expected- very good!
The chocolate shake was so good! This was a bit of a splurge for me, but I don’t think I would get the burger again even though it was a really good. Little trick: downstairs there are a bunch of tables that not a lot of people use, so it’s nice and quiet! I would get the shakes again and I recommend dipping the fries in the shake :) !
Great fast food burgers. It's for the experience mostly but the taste is fine as well. I tried different types of burgers here, even the chicken sandwich. I would recommend it if you do not eat pork, but I'm from the south that has CHICK FIL A everywhere so my standard for chicken sandwich is high. The milkshakes are rich in flavor. The line is long but the wait isn't. Just don't expect to have open seats! Eat the food at the park or somewhere else!
Stopped in for lunch after walking the American Museum of Natural History. The walk up kiosks made ordering easy especially at the height of lunch time. While the first floor seating was taken we were able to find plenty of open seating downstairs. The tables were not properly cleaned in-between customers but with the high traffic area we didn't mind doing a quick wipe down. Our food was read in less than 10 mins. Chicken sandwich and chicken bites were hot and tasty. Fries were not hot, more room temperature and subpar. The shake flavor selection was small. We choose the mini size and it was a perfect way to end our meal.
I’m always a fan of Shake Shack. The food is pretty reliably good. This visit was no different. The only issues at this location was some of their communication/signs. They have a giant neon sign that has an arrow pointing people to pick up orders at one counter, but I watched as they told every person who came up to the counter to do that to go to a different counter for a pickup. On top of that, they were sold out of things without anything being marked as such on any menus or signs. Outside of those frustrations, the food was good, and even though it was packed, there was still quite a bit of seating here. Definitely give the Korean chicken sandwich while it’s being served. It’s pretty fantastic.
Shake Shack on the Upper West Side is a reliable and enjoyable fast casual experience with a great atmosphere and genuinely efficient, friendly service. The space is well designed and comfortable, making it a pleasant spot to sit and enjoy your meal. The food is where it feels a little inconsistent — sometimes hitting that classic Shake Shack quality, other times falling slightly short of expectations. Still a solid go-to for a quick and satisfying meal in the neighborhood.
Great burger spot after a walk through Central Park. Even though it can be a little crowdy during peak hours, its worth the wait. The burgers were tasty and fresh and seating is available both on the ground floor and the basement. The staff are friendly, helpful and you get free refills once you dine in. The restrooms are located downstairs and its clean.
Good spot for a quick bite. The burgers are tasty and consistent with other Shake Shack locations, and the shakes never disappoint. Service can be a bit slow during peak hours, and seating inside is limited. Staff are generally friendly, however when I asked for a drink without ice, the woman at the counter reacted rudely, which made the service feel less friendly.
It’d been a while since I’d last had Shake Shack, but I had a craving and ordered a Shack Burger and Fries for pick-up. With its proximity to the American Museum of Natural History and Central Park, this location can get quite busy, but I went for a very late lunch or very early dinner, so the lines weren’t too long. My pick-up experience was very positive, thanks to the friendly, helpful staff. When I arrived, I couldn’t locate the pick-up counter, so I asked one of the staff. They told me and very kindly guided me to where it was, at the back of the restaurant. The staff with the pick-up orders was also very friendly. Although it was a very short time, by the time I got home, the food wasn’t hot. I’d arrived before my pick-up time, but my order was already there, so maybe it’d been sitting there for a bit. Both my Shack Burger and Fries were still good, though. Their burgers aren’t as greasy as some other places and the fries are crinkle cut fries. I love ketchup and realized after I got home that I should’ve gotten extra, because I use it for both my burger and fries, and it only came with 2 packets. Note for next time. It was a good experience overall, though. Great service really makes all the difference.
I ordered a brownie batter hot cocoa shake and French fries today. The shake was decent. I did get a few small pieces of broken down brownie crumbs. The fries were pretty nice actually. It was crispy even when it’s cold. Delicious! The staff were nice and friendly. The layout of the restaurant was kind of strange. Takeout was tucked in all the way to the back that I had to walk past all the people who were dining there. I just think I would like people constantly walking passing by when I’m enjoying my food. This Shake Shack has wine. Maybe I’ll come back and try it next time.
Good stuff , in & out despite the line being up to the door . So I had the double cheese burger with onions tomato & pickles. great tasting fresh & juicy burger with a soft bun . The fries were ok not much taste, but nothing a tub of ketchup couldn't fix . Plenty of seating just get there early the lines can get pretty long.
Too crowded. Unable to manage crowds. Kitchen can't keep up with demand. Hard to get a seat. Overheated on a hot day. Air conditioning, if any, us inadequate. Way too noisy. Service mediocre. Food overpriced. Absolutely unenjoyable. Hamburgers taste good. Avoid the crowd and a decent experience is possible.
Mixed feelings about the food. Had higher expectations for the bourbon and shake stack. The mushroom patty was a redeeming factor though. The curly fries were pretty good, but not really worth the price. The milk shake was far too sweet, we ended up chucking out after trying to finish half of it (and we rarely waste food so 😢)
The burger was good but small for the price, the Korean fries were a joke! Served cold and not really flavourful. I liked my shake shack burger but my company did not really enjoy his cheese and bacon burger. Mediocre…very fatty and soggy buns. My shake shacks experience 6 years ago next to the flat iron building was waaaay better!
Food is okay, ice tea was completely flavorless and room temperature. Fries were crispy not soggy. Very busy inside the place. We used the number plates and a worker came and without a word slammed the plate on the ledge next to our table and walked away. Said worker brought our food to us a bit later. Horrible attitude which was unwarranted.
The food was lovely, but the wait was horrendous! We arrived at 12:30, queued for 15 minutes and spent a further 30 waiting for our food. By the time it was ready, we were ravenous. They also ran out of buns while we were there, so there was a backlog of orders while they waited for delivery. A really convenient place to eat if you are visiting the national history museum, but don't expect quick service!
Super crowded as you can expect. Is almost impossible to find a place to seat cause place is super small so pretty much everyone has to eat standing up. I know these burgers are super famous but... to be honest taste is normal. I’ve tried better burgers in so many different places. So I honestly don’t know why they’re so famous. I mean they’re not bad but nothing to get crazy about either. Shakes are good. I’d recommend eating somewhere else just because is not the best burger place, not the cheapest one and definitely is too crowded, so don’t expect an unforgettable experience.
insanely crowded. staff training & management can be better; although large crowds and outdoor noise levels make it difficult to maintain a calm atmosphere. hygiene is not the best either & rather below average compared to other shake shack locations. however, food is still great and they do complete your order in a timely matter. would say that there was not a single staff member in sight at the register to accept cash.
The burgers are good but is not the end of the world. The shakes are good and creamy, my favorite was the tiramisu. They have restrooms downstairs. Is VERY crowded, I recommend you order online and pick up. The service is good though. Burgers does not include fries, you gotta pay them separately.
Shake Shack in the Upper West Side was consistent with their quality of food, BUT The service was waaaaaaay too slow and they couldn’t keep up with their orders. Our group of 4 ordered 4 burgers, 1 fried and 1 lemonade. It took them 4️⃣5️⃣ MINUTES to prepare. When we asked to follow up, they didn’t know what we happening. The people around us were waiting and complaining too.
They only take orders via touch pads, which takes more than double as long as if people would order directly on the cash register, I also had to wait quite a while for my order to be ready. Fast food? Not really
Waited more than 30 mins for couple sandwich which seems to be so hyped. I remember the original shake shack at Madison SQ park when they started, it was very tasty. Sadly not any more. It just waste of time waiting for unreasonably hyped priced sad looking sandwiches for more than 30 mins to get… chicken sandwich was too salty, i did not even finish
I never received my food after placing my pick up online. I waited over 30 minutes and my food wasn’t made. No one was willing to help me or check on my order. I went and spoke to a customer service rep on the chat and they said they couldn’t help and then proceeded to disconnect the chat. Worst experience ever. Waste of money and time.
Ordered a well done burger for my daughter. Received all pink in the middle burger. Last time ever to try shake shack. No manager available to talk to. All cooks say they didn’t cook that burger. Cashier says it might been for someone else and by mistake came to me!! Apparently it is a rocket science to cook a burger. I was wrong all along.
Double charged me for the same order. Also had to wait 1 hour before they realize « my order is lost in the system ». Although they confirmed multiple times that it’s being processed. Lost 19$ :(
Better off going across the street for the pre fix at le pecora Bianca because the amount of money i paid for sloppy serving, cold nuggets and burger is not worth it, at all. Never again. Garbage food.
This review is quite late, but I came here around a year ago and when I was eating downstairs, a violent fight broke out between the workers in the kitchen next to the downstairs eating area. I started recording one of the guys fighting, and he yelled at me and started to scream and the other workers instead of defending me yelled at me too to put my camera down. It wasn't a crazy guy the employees obviously knew him (he wasn't dressed in his shake shack outfit, but he worked there because the employees weren't calling the police), but it was very violent and they were like struggling. I do not feel safe going there anymore.
Food was good. Burgers are ace. Service is terrible and mean terrible. 1Hr to get a meal for two kids and 2 adults. No ketchup holders. No tables had to eat outside on the street.
Ordered delivery. Took an hour and food was cold. But I’m not sure it was the long wait time that made it so cold; the burger itself was raw in the middle, which I didn’t feel safe eating. I tried to call the restaurant to warn them, but the phone number is disconnected. Uber Eats support was also unhelpful. Praying I don’t get sick.
