Excellent, genuine Japanese cooking in a shady, tranquil outdoor space. A wonderful experience. Will be going back soon.
Mellow atmosphere, great food, tasty sake. Outdoor seating. What more could you want?
Delicious, cute atmosphere and friendly staff. Well worth the commute from Manhattan for a change of scenery.
I had been put off by the name of this restaurant thinking that it would be all beancurd. It was not at all like that. the food was delicious!! Bravo.
Fantastic authentic homestyle japanese food. Everything is very fresh. Highly recommend
One of a kind authentic experiences all around. I wish I lived closer to make this a regular weekly stop.
Soy is special place a must try for sure !
Definitely call in advance for reservations.
Wonderful patio and delicious Japanese cuisine! Can’t wait to return!
Can't wait to go again! Traditional fare with a creative and healthy twist. Nyam nyam!
Food is killer and I loved sitting in their back outdoor garden space by the creek.
Amazing place. Very unique and worth the wait. Food was excellent.
Amazing Japanese food, and even sells Japanese pantry items. Thank you for caring about your customers.
Delicious food at a reasonable price! This is now our go-to regular spot :)
Not just good food but community. Beautiful garden
everything about this place is incredible. wonderful experience overall!
First time here and the food, service and atmosphere were all great.
What a great place to get some comfort food and have fun. It's a classic.
Best food in Rosendale, hands down. Cant wait to go back tomorrow!!
The tuna avocado rice bowl is perfect.
Hole in the wall place with amazing food in the middle of nowhere
Great food and drinks in a sec atmosphere
Friendly people and excellent food !!!! Best soup !!!
Was a great place will go there again soon
This was a very nice place, great food, and fair prices. Good place if you want to try tasty tofu and other vegetarian options. Giving 5 stars because the place deserves it. Also to counteract that other person who gave 4 because they said it was their first time. The algorithm matters!
So happy this has moved from Brooklyn. Amazing food always. Owner, who is adorable and a great oragami artist :-), served us tonight. Had the Chicken Katsu Curry which was so flavorful and perfect on a cold day. Matcha Cheesecake was dangerously good.
OH MY GOD the tuna avocado bowl and the SOY spicy mayo! I dream of these two things. The portions are small so be forewarned that you will be hungry if you only order one dish. But order more dishes. You won’t be unhappy. :)
Soy excels in a unique menu and delicious food! The patio seating is great and the garden is beautiful to look out at. Highly recommend and a fresh take on Japanese food.
My partner and I make the trip to Rosendale from Brooklyn whenever we possibly can. The food is amazing every time and it makes you feel at home. Highly recommend to anyone looking to escape the city for a few hours and enjoy some of the best Japanese comfort food
Peaceful restaurant that delivers the best tuna bowl. It is so good we bought the dressing to take home. I wish we had more time to dine to sample everything.
Awesome Japanese food, home made healthy style. Great selections of Sake in addition to IPAs and standard alcohol. Fun atmosphere, definitely going back!
Authentic Japanese home cooking- (warning- "no sushi, here")! Varied and Creative menu and environs, with beautiful backyard fishpond and Riverside garden. Owner/Chef Etsko Kizawa's the real deal- come all the way up from the Lower East Side to bless Rosendale and MidHudson valley with her traditional foods and sakes. A real bonus in our area!
Great selection of draft beer and the spicy tuna bowl is delicious. Ask for Dave's shrimp dumplings, they are off menu but exceptional.
I love you lot. Miss you. hey mama! wassup taiyo! keep shining boy!! i understand why you lot had to leave the city. I just wish it wasn't so. I will drive up soon. yall still have the XL tuna bowl off the menu :))) ? anybody reading this to find out what the restaurant is like, allow me to run you a quick bit of history. This place is a proper gem. It's also a family. used to be on the ground floor in the same building where they lived in LES manhattan, and for the most part everybody there was "old" new york. I used to see someone in that building and would come downstairs, walk past this one apartment that always smelled wild, and I would go down and treat myself to some home style Japanese goodness. Soy is an unassuming, yet robust and rich experience. Place is covered in art made by the little shining one. He would be in there half the time, even serve water on rare occasion. Mama makes the food with actual love. I always felt good handing over my money. Felt like i was a part of something special. Don't listen to me though. Check it out for yourself.
absolutely lovely atmosphere and delicious homestyle japanese food! definitely visit, it is a wonderful place
It was a very nice experience, the outdoor patio was very comfortable. The food was incredible, comparable to the finest in LA or NYC without the high prices. Owners are very nice.
We love everything on the menu. Spicy tuna and avocado bowl is my go-to though. Salad dressing is also fantastic.
Excellent food! Nice environment. Small operation so call ahead to make sure they’re ready for you!
Delicious, low key restaurant with great service, a beautiful back yard and a small menu of really top rate dishes. I'm thrilled to have stumbled onto this place and can't wait to go back.
Like many others have said - Awesome Tuna Bowl. The delicious food, homemade ginger lemonade, and great service will keep me coming back!
Excellent! Very nice covered and uncovered patios. Very relaxing atmosphere. We enjoyed our food & drinks. We will definitely be back.
Home style Japanese food in a rustic setting - nice to get a good authentic bento box in the Hudson Valley!
Love SOY! Etsko's cooking is fantastic, the vibe is great (and the garden is low-key the best place in the area) and Saturday movie night is a nice touch 👍
Lovely space... outdoor deck and back garden. The food is carefully prepared and lovingly seasoned. Wonderful evening. I highly recommend it.
Home style Japanese cooking, my friend who used to go to their location in manhattan wanted to go, and we loved it. Super kind staff and comfortable atmosphere
Yum! My family has had many delicious meals here. The food is so tasty, clean, nutritive.
Awesome food - I don’t come here enough and I need to change that. Little oasis outside in the back that is worth sitting outside and watching the coy pond. Food is authentic and made with heart. The inside atmosphere is a little weird but food makes up for it
Soy makes an amazing tuna avocado rice bowl. The rice is cooked in a way that makes it taste like I didn’t know rice could be. one of my favorite local affordable and healthy dishes spicy mayo dressing is my favorite of the sauces but I don’t think I’ve even tried the others because the spicy mayo is so good. She seems to do sake tastings as well. Nice summer patio no-gratuity restaurant.
Elegant simple menu with a variety of quality Japanese style dishes. The small menu made it easy to pick yet there is something for everyone. Given the select items, this must be a key factor in why each dish was a 10 out of 10 flawless and tasty.
This is great food and an awesome ambiance as the sun sets. Do not expect quick food- nothing good happens fast. This place is steeped in traditional flavors while you absorb the surroundings. Enjoy
I am a long timer of Soy before Etsko moved to upstate. It’s a place of sensational value to me. I spent so many nights feeling lonely and down walking into SOY and the food and atmosphere just cured me, and I walked out with a smile. It’s the type of Japanese home cooking that conveys health and caring, fresh and healthy ingredients, and the portion is well balanced so you are not going to walk out feeling like a bag of potatoes, which mean you actually get to try many different things If you do want to stuff yourself like a bag of potatoes (sometimes that’s what all it takes to feel better right?) Hopefully you got to like it as much as I do, and I will visit SOY whenever I’m in town or close by
The food was amazing and so well priced. The owner/chef is one of the kindest women I've ever met. She made sure we had a wonderful meal and felt taken care of. Best date night I've had in a while. Totally recommend.
Delicious food, wonderful atmosphere. This was a lovely and peaceful escape on a warm Saturday. The food was so good and so wholesome and fresh, and the back garden is shady and cool. Highly recommend.
Small menu but everything is home cooked and delicious. Outside is beautiful and peaceful with gardens and the Rondout Creek. Owner/chef is very lovely and hospitable. You can’t go wrong, I bring all my friends here.
Hi! So much to say about Soy. I’m a neighbor and friend of the owner. Soy is home. Literally. But first, let’s talk food. I used to always get the tuna bowl with all the fixings. Always a reliable dish, and always leaves me feeling clean and energized. Then I tried some other dishes. The tofu steak sits on a salad that’s out of this world, and the chicken curry is exactly what you need on a slow day. But if you’re looking for home, Niku Jaga, the ultimate mama’s dish is where you turn. You do not need to be from Japan to enjoy this dish, but if you are, it might have a special place in your heart. This is home cooking. At home. It’s not your home, but while you’re there, it sure does feel like home. P.S. Be sure to find a black book with “Soy” on the front. You’ll know what to do when you see it.
What a great find of a restaurant in the artsy, eclectic town of Rosendale. Very creative menu with some nice, daily specials. Authentic, fresh Japanese cuisine. Not your standard Asian fusion or sushi place. This is the real deal. The owner Etsko is such a nice lady to talk with. I also like the outdoor seating area for warmer months. Make sure you give this place a try. You’ll be glad you did.
This is one of my favorite local spots. Especially in the summer-time, the outdoor dining in front of the beautiful garden and river is tough to beat. The menu is small, and having worked in the food service industry, I believe that is key to maintaining high quality and fresh ingredients in a small town. I love the Niku Jaga, the Spicy Tuna and Avocado Bowl and am looking forward to trying SOY's Ramen specials. I also recommend the pickle plate- all homemade, and the $9 bottle of unfiltered sake, served cold. The sake was plenty to share among 3 people—a great deal, and delicious. The perfect post-hike hang out to regain your energy. I enjoyed meeting up with friends on the old Suffolk St., LES location and was delighted to see that SOY had moved to Rosendale.
Authentic, quality Japanese home cooking expertly done. Order the gyoza (how does she get them so crispy and so succulent??), rotating miso soup specials, and the mains are always solid. Thoughtful beer and sake menus, homemade condiments, totally charming space. Don't expect American portions, so order an extra app if you are very hungry. You will feel nourished and fortified by the perfect balance of flavors and ingredients.
Food is fabulous. As a frequent flyer to Japan, I felt as if I was sitting in Asakusa, Tokyo eating my spicy tuna bowl! The sake cocktails are tasty and fabulous. THANK YOU SOY for providing authentic food!
Delicious home-cooked food in a fantastic space. The back patio and garden is INCREDIBLE, especially if you're looking for distanced outdoor dining options. Everything is fresh and delicious.
We had the most wonderful dinner from Soy. ETsko, the lovely owner, made us a vegan meal as requested. Every single thing was delicious and fresh. We loved every dish! Many thanks!
You need to call ahead and reserve a spot. Great nikujaga
An entirely wonderful, cozy and delicious g of a restaurant. The food is some of the most authentic and delicious Japanese food I’ve had outside of Japan. The “mama’s” stew, salad and fresh dumplings are delicious. The atmosphere is really homey and I believe woman who runs the place is also the chef. She is very gracious, but it’s worth noting you might have to sit back and relax while she prepares your meal. Well worth the late! .
Went with a family group, the restaurant was so hospitable. We originally made reservations for outdoor dining but it started to rain just before we arrived and they were happy to seat us inside instead. A nice collection of games kept the kids happy, allowing the adults to enjoy the food in peace. Portion sizes are relatively small, some of us ordered entrees to share with the kids, but ended up ordering a few more appetizers to fill in the gaps. One entree per person and a couple of appetizers to share would be plenty. Food was delicious, especially the fresh tofu and the beef stew. The kids appreciated the French fries with curry sauce. Will definitely to go back and enjoy the patio seating!
The food, 6 stars! Aside from that, we loved the laid back and natural vibe. We appreciated the attention to detail and diverse array of plants, particularly where we sat on the back patio, which is spacious and inviting. Make sure to call ahead!
My wife and I visited Soy recently on a Saturday afternoon. There was a sign near the entrance apologizing for a long wait due to staffing shortages. This is the reason for my 3 star rating for service. The owner was doing both chef and waitstaff duties. We read the food was great and decided to spend the extra time waiting. The owner was extremely friendly despite being so busy. Once our orders were placed, it wasn't terribly long before the food arrived. Based on the food and super friendly owner of Soy, I strongly recommend others visit, even if you need to wait awhile. I know that my wife and I will be back many more times.
Very intimate setting, reminds me of the Netflix show called Midnight Diner. One lady was doing everything, and the food was delicious! I had the Spicy Tuna Avocado bowl and my boyfriend got the Beef stew (forgot the name). Great food, great service, great ambiance!
This is a super delicious place in a quiet town near Kingston. I have been here twice in the last week, both times for the Hijiki (seaweed salad) and the Spicey Tuna & Avocado Bowl. My friend had the Bento Box with Mackerel. Everything ridiculously fresh - like being transported back to a favorite spot in Japan. If I lived here, it would be my second home 💗
I love Soy. The owner/chef is a beautiful person and takes great care in her food. It is healthy and very delicious. She can make dishes/salads with Gluten free sauces so ask for it. Call ahead to make reservations. Owner is doing everything herself- be patient, relax and enjoy the lovely garden, view of river out back and drinks while you wait for food. Totally worth it (I come from NYCity just to go to Soy after she moved her restaurant up there).
We loved the back patio here for a gathering of two families. The dishes are perfection and there were so many vegetarian options! Dishes are cooked to order so it can take a bit more time but it’s worth the wait. If we we’re local we’d be here more often but it’s now on our must eat at list when in the area.
Probably the most delicious food I have ever eaten. The owner and chef is great and makes you feel at home. There are some legos and toys for kids to play with and the restaurant has a fun and funky vibe to it. The best dish I’ve had there so far was the tuna bowl. I could eat that for breakfast lunch and dinner! If I could give this place 20 stars, I would!
A good gem in the town, quality food, and tasty. The service is also lovely, the people who work there are personable and real. The flavors are absolutely worth coming back for. Pictured here was the Veg bowl with some of the best soft tofu we've had
I would give this place 10 stars if I could! NYC’s loss was the Hudson Valley’s gain when she left the city to open her Japanese restaurant in Rosendale. The back patio and garden is lovely and so tranquil, the sake ginger lemonade was refreshing and not sweet (perfect!), the pork kimchi gyoza were perfect, as was the salmon avocado rice bowl with homemade dressings. I would eat here every night if I lived here - what a gem!
Authentic and satisfying Japanese food. Simple and perfect. This place is an absolute gem. Very highly recommended. But come with a peaceful mindset.
I’ve been eating at Soy since the original, Lower East Side, location. I’m in Rosendale a few times a year and Etsko’s food and warmth are always as wonderful as I remembered. I just enjoyed a Taconic bourbon and edamame cheese rolls, now I’m savoring my miso soup and can’t wait for the tofu steak to arrive!
This place was absolutely incredible! I got the Niku Jaga dinner set and i was blown away. If you are ever Rosendale i highly recommend this place. The owner/chef was also extremely friendly and the decor is like something out of a studio ghibli movie!

Absolutely delicious home cooked Japanese comfort food. Fresh, flavorful, quality food. Also very affordable! Ordered two appetizers and two mains, every dish was excellent.
Loved the food and atmosphere, such a peaceful place - especially loved the bento box and cocktails. It's so rare to find such carefully and personally prepared food. Be sure to make a reservation and call ahead!
I love soy, and I love this c o n g e e pop up. Yeah atmosphere is great it's a beautiful space. The hand plastered walls, the gracious bar. I love all the tiny little animals that the owner and her child have made that are nestled around the place. The wall art is great. The food is so nourishing, to both Body and Soul. I love all the cool events, rhetoric food, the Art, and the back patio is amazing. The back Garden is beautiful and peaceful. This is just one of my favorite places.🩷🩷🩷
Great surprise stumbling across SOY. The chef owner was amazing, serving and cooking the meal for us. Food was so tasty and atmosphere was so unique and inviting. We had a great time
Absolutely lovely place! Everything is done by one woman who serves, hosts, cooks, and manages the place! The food portion sizes are smaller which is fine since everything was good quality and cheaper. Overall impressed and will remember this place for a long time!
Tastes so comforting and I love the tiny figurines she made herself 😍 miso soup rotation was genius
Cute, cozy, and delicious spot! Very authentic and feels like a home cooked Japanese meal. Good tasty food, and relaxing atmosphere. Had the tuna and avocado bowl, croquettes, and a miso soup! Try it out!
Soy feels like a warm hug. It's the kind of place where food is served with such care that it restores your faith in the world. At Soy, patience is essential (signs throughout remind you not to rush), but Etsko serves such well-crafted dishes that makes it worthwhile. The Hiya Yakko and Niku Jaga were standout favorites. After dining at several upscale restaurants during our Woodstock getaway, my wife declared the Niku Jaga as her most satisfying bite. For such a small establishment, Etsko offers an impressively curated sake selection. When weather permits, the back porch seating creates the perfect dining atmosphere. The restaurant has its quirks (walk-ins aren't encourage) so calling ahead is essential. But the deeply satisfying food makes the effort worth it.

This is a consistently good little restaurant with weekly specials and fresh ingredients! Our go to place for a relaxed, informal meal.
Portions are very small and expensive, but I suppose that's to be expected of a small local restaurant using high-quality ingredients and cooking everything to order. I wouldn't again pay $4 for the underwhelming "Homemade Pickles" appetizer (which was no more than 2 Tbsp worth and wasn't very pickle-y), but the tuna-avocado-rice bowl is exquisite. The veggie dumplings are fabulous, though they were oddly served with just half a teaspoon (no exaggeration) of gyoza sauce. It's basically just soy sauce and vinegar, so that seems like an odd thing to scrimp!
Excellent Japanese food served in comfortable ambience. There is a beautiful garden in the back but it was too dark to explore. I will return for lunch to explore the garden. I kept one star back because it was my first visit. I know I will add it next time.
The service was objectively poor when we went- shockingly slow- took 15 minutes to order and over 20 to check out. But I’m going to assume this isn’t typical. The food was delicious- very simple and definitely leaves you with a “home cooked” feeling. Every dish we tried was nicely done. I would suggest an appetizer and an entree for each person, the portions are not necessarily small but if you’re hungry it’s worth an add.
My first visit this past summer was perfect. Came in on a Saturday afternoon after a long hike. I had ice cold beer and tried everything on the daily menu. Every course from the soup to the cold dish to the main course was delicious! I visited again this past Saturday and got turned away. The lady running the place said she was not taking new parties before 4pm. Next time, I'd probably try calling first.

This was my first time here. Food was decent but the portions are very small . I didn't feel like I got my monies worth at all. Had a tuna avocado bowl and the size was that of a small side dish instead of a main dish. Also ordered the Niku Jaga which was small and the meat was overcooked which made it tough. . I was expecting an amazing authentic experience with incredible food and presentation but instead it was just ok but nothing outstanding. Service was very slow and needs some improvement. Our waitress did not come back to check on us to see if we needed more drinks etc. We had to flag her down to get the check and they weren't that busy. Overall it was ok.
Food was good. Service needs a lot of work. Waiters were disorganized and food was missing sides.
Mediocre food made worse with incredibly rude service (for no apparent reason). We weren't made to feel welcome - would avoid at all costs.
We ordered for 4, and while the beef curry was decent (small portions), the ‘tofu sachets’ were not good. Mostly just salty tofu with some salad greens (for $14). Ordering almost $100 worth for 4 people, and everyone felt they were still hungry after. Perhaps we were just there on a bad day, but would suggest taking these glowing reviews with a grain of salt. (On the other hand, the gyoza was really good)
I ordered monk bowl but I was very disappointed. The portion is small and it tastes like something I can easily make at home. It also doesn't come with soup or appetizer so I don't think it is worth the price. They also have very little vegan options.
Lovely place but nothing I mean nothing can justify the tiny portions. I paid 15$ for an entree + 5$ for a small serving of rice 20$ total. The beef dish entree was basically an appetizer together with a little bit of plain white rice was not at all filling- Soy needs to do better.

Very disappointed. Our server was very disorganized and had the memory of a knat. Food was ok...nothing special.
