Fang receives high praise for its flavorful and unique Chinese cuisine, often described as an 'amazing journey of food'. Chef Kathy Fang's recommendations, especially the Chef's Choice, are popular. Some find the service inconsistent, and food occasionally too salty.

House of Nanking is amazing, and when we walked into Fang today for lunch and had the legend Peter Fang greet us and get us going, I knew it would be a good meal. I knew it would be pricy, but he actually talked with us and offered to put together some options based on our tastes that he thought would resonate with us. Did they ever. Now for 2 of us, it was $116, but we got 5 dishes and had to bring about half of it home, so honestly, if we're talking apples to apples value for meals around the city, this wasn't out of line at all. You can easily pay $100+ for 2 people to have a meal that isn't nearly as good (and probably not nearly as much food). The dumplings and beef wonton were incredible, but the short ribs stole the show. The place isn't large, but it's set up to make smart use of space so several tables can be filled at once. It's rare I walk away from a meal with no notes, but truly, I can't begin to adequately explain how good our lunch was. There is a lot of food Chinese food in SF, but outside of House of Nanking, I don't know if I have had anything to rival what we had at Fang.
We went to Fang on a Friday afternoon for lunch. The chef, Peter, hooked us up with a variety of his choices after we told him about any dietary restrictions. He picked some amazing dishes. Mainly pescatarian. Loved the seafood soup, shrimp, fish, fried rice. They also have a full bar. The only thing that I didn’t like was the service was super fast. They were clearing our dishes before we were finished. They do close at 2pm but still wasn’t great to feel rushed. Otherwise I recommend and will go back soon.
I was on a business trip in San Francisco and a group of 20 had dinner at Fang. Being familiar with Peter and his daughter Kathy Fang the owners, I was excited to eat there. Her father also owns House of Nanking. We had a large table in the lower level across from the wine wall. The food was amazing and it kept coming. Pete Fang was on hand and helped serve our group. At some point I lost track of what I ate, but I started with a Lychee It Up. The Pork Belly Steamed Buns were awesome.
Had dinner there 10/1 with 4 colleagues. We trusted Mr. Fang to make decisions for us and were so happy we did. He made sure we didn't have allergies or religious restrictions. Everything was great and I loved the fried rice made at the table. My colleague who had been there did ask for broccoli to be included and at first i was like whatever, kind of odd, but you do you. It was honestly the best broccoli I've ever eaten. Service was super atrentive and the pace of food and drink was great. Absolutely will go again!
Going to Fang is an amazing experience that is a mix of variety and incredibly tasty food. The owner and the staff are very friendly and they make some of the best Chinese food you've had. The food is uniquely flavored that you can't find elsewhere and it's not just packed with sweet taste. Highly recommend this place especially if you have guests and love Chinese food. You've never had anything like this, simply amazing.
Food speaks for itself. Everyone makes you feel like family. We were a large group that got a little bit of everything. Each dish was made with love. Honestly everything was so good it's hard to pick a favorite dish. You can't go wrong here. Highly recommend. The highlight of my trip to San Francisco!
Fast service and quick food, like many Chinese restaurants. But the food is downright amazing. Pork Buns and Crispy Honey Short Rib with Bok Choy are both top notch choices. Both crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Buns especial are soft and melt in your mouth. Ask for chili oil for a mild spice or chili sauce for a much spicier addition. Not cheap at about $60 for an app and entré for 1 person, but I could not finish it - plenty of food.
Absolutely fantastic restaurant both in quality of the food and the service / atmosphere. It was our first time going and if you tell the owne that he will offer to take care of you and bring the best selections of courses, which turned out to be phenomenal. It's hard to even reccomend a particular dish, I would order all of them again. The short rib was incredibly tender on the inside with a great fried crispy crust on the outside. The apple shrimp situation was phenomenal. All the dishes had sauces with incredible depths of flavor to them. Come with as many people as possible as eating family style with as many different options to share is your best bet.
Ordered indo spiced soup, sesame honey chicken and sweet potato, and sizzling fried rice with shrimp. Everything was flavorful, the service was quite fast, and some of the food was spicy too. Soup felt good until the other dishes came. There was a lot of soup for 2 people. Sesame chicken was on the spicy side but it was well cooked. The highlight of the evening was the shrimp fried rice, it came on a hot plate and they poured egg white and yolk on the sides and cooked it on our table and mixed together, it was so delicious! Server was quick and efficient.
Truly an amazing journey of food and fun. Let Fang lead the way and enjoy. It is a great stop when in the financial district.

They have vegetarian options. They are very very very busy. It hurts the service. They are very cramped. They were shuffling chairs around and hit my husband’s knee without even realizing. Atmosphere is very chaotic. There is no music thank goodness! That would be the cherry on top. The vegetarian wonton soup was our favorite. We would probably come back just for that. The fried rice - don’t waste your time.
After a long creatively fulfilling day at the MoMa, I found myself in Fang. The proximity was perfect, I found it through a food blog. Fang had a no pretentious, classy Chinese heritage vibe. Folks with large teams were enjoying themselves at the family share tables. I had the vegetarian fried dumplings and the vegetarian chow mein. The dumplings were crisp on the outside and juicy on the inside. Whereas the chowmein came in a double-decker tealight heated bowl to retain the ambient temperature. The noodles were uniquely coated with a delicious spice accompanied with lettuce, asparagus, and broccoli. The comforting, tasty noodles hit the spot with subtle flavors!
We came late and the service was pretty rough. It's a good fusion place though. A little pricey.

Two stars for the ambience, but everything else today was awful. The "sizzling rice soup" was soup with some old rice in it. Excessive oil on the noodles gave us both upset tummies.

We ordered potstickers and egg rolls for starters. Our waiter, who I think was Mr. Fang (whose daughter owns the place) told us "no" to the egg rolls and talked us into the pork belly bao buns. H…
I got Mapo Tofu and asked for a little extra spicy. Apparently that means to them to dump a bucket of sichuan peppercorn, that didn't make it spicy just kinda numbing with that acid after taste when to much is used. I thought it odd that it didn't include white rice so that was an upcharge. The egg rolls were okay but it was more of a thick spring roll because of the smooth outer shell, also I thought it was odd that they cut them up and poured honey mustard I just assumed that the sauce would be on the side. Flavor of the egg rolls was fine overall. The one ding is I sat at the small table at the top of the stairs and after a bit I was getting a wet gym sock smell that just wouldn't go away which added to the food which could have thrown my taste buds off I'm not sure.
the food was outstanding. we stumbled upon fang after walking around all day and we didnt even know it was one of keanu reaves's favorite resturants. we had the famous sizzling rice, rice soup, beef ribs, and lo mein. 10/10 but then after the meal we noticed an insane amount of dust covered the walls. like was it not cleaned since the filming of matrix 4? usually not something i notice but it was ALOT, not dust bunnies but full grown dust rabbits.

Is Taiwanese braised pork over rice supposed to be sweet like a sweet teriyaki? I’ve had good one here before but this one seems like a miss. Oh I’ve had the real traditional Taiwanese dish so I know.

Scam and food is mid at best. A long overdue post but every once in awhile I remember I came here and get pissed off. Don’t come here unless if you want to be scammed. They charged us for 6 buns when we were only given 5. We called to ask about this and they would not refund us, but said “next time you come we can give you one more” yea right, as if I’ll ever come back. The fried rice was $18 on the menu but we got charged $27. Other items we got charged for were not even on the menu so they could charge as much as they wanted for little food ($29-36 per item). Look at how little food was given for the prawns for $36. The way there were only FIVE pieces of shrimp and you want to charge $36?? What a terrible way to run a business, look at all the 1 star reviews of others with similar experiences. How are you not embarrassed?
I was genuinely excited to try a new Chinese restaurant I hadn't heard of before--especially given that this was the food of my heritage. Unfortunately, the experience was profoundly disappointing. The food bore no resemblance to authentic Chinese cooking. Instead, it felt like a poor imitation of Americanized Chinese fare, with the same syrupy, corn-starch-laden sauces poured indiscriminately over every protein and vegetable. To call it a glorified Panda Express would be unfair to Panda Express--at least their dishes have a distinct, if Americanized, flavor. Here, the ingredients were of noticeably low quality, the sauces cloying and indistinct, and the preparation careless, as if no thought had been given to how the dishes would actually taste. To make matters worse, the restaurant engaged in deceptive billing practices. Each dish came with an unannounced $20 surcharge, effectively doubling the price of our meal. The owner personally took our order but aggressively steered us away from our selections. When I ordered a simple cabbage and tofu dish to complement Mongolian beef and honey prawns, he questioned why I was choosing "so many vegetables" if I wasn't vegetarian. He then suggested substitutions, implying they were complimentary. When I declined, he insisted he knew best and encouraged us to "trust him." Only later did we discover those "suggestions" came with hidden fees and they charged us all these fees even though I had declined. Adding insult to injury, the portion sizes remained unchanged despite the receipt adding "large" under each dish we ordered with an additional $20 fee for each plate. They were clearly hoping diners wouldn't notice the upcharges or would be too polite to object. Thankfully, one of our party members spoke Cantonese and was able to confront them directly. Only then did they backtrack and remove the charges, blaming it on a "mistake." The entire experience was deeply unethical. The food was subpar, the pricing deceptive, and the overall approach felt exploitative--particularly targeting unsuspecting or non-Chinese patrons. I've never encountered a restaurant so brazen in its disregard for honesty or customer trust. I will not be returning and I recommend that you never set foot in this restaurant either.
