Pakwan is praised for its flavorful and authentic Indian/Pakistani cuisine, especially the biryani and nihari. The portions are large and the prices are relatively inexpensive. It's a casual, self-service spot, great for a quick and tasty meal.

The Fish Biryani here seriously stands out. The rice was perfectly cooked long-grain, fluffy, and layered with real flavor instead of just color. The fish pieces were fresh, tender, and not overcooked, which is rare for biryani. Every bite had balanced spice flavorful heat without overpowering the dish.
Excellent service! 👌 Great food! Staff is friendly and helpful. I asked for lemon to add to my dish, and they gave me lemon and two other things to match my dish. Very practical! 😁 Had biryani and Nihari, and loved both. As always with Indian place is, the portions are family-sized, so plan to share your plate; extra plates available at the register.
Came here with a big group and we all get good food, super fast, and had a great spot to sit! The night was super warm so we sat outside and it was perfect. The menu has something for everyone. The biryani plates are huge! Definitely enough to take some home.
Last night, I stumbled into Pakwan for dinner, a casual Pakistani spot that somehow manages to feel both unpretentious and deeply nostalgic. There was no rush, no line, and plenty of open tables both inside and out. The kind of place where time slows down just enough for you to notice the little things: the soft hum of conversation, the sizzle of the open kitchen, and the aromatic swirl of cumin, garlic, and smoke that instantly reminded me of Lahore. The owner himself was behind the register, greeting guests with that quiet hospitality that makes you feel more like family than a customer. Watching the kitchen from my table, I could see the flames leap as the chefs worked, each flicker echoing the street food stalls of Bun’s Road. The air carried that unmistakable perfume of char, chili, and masala that every Pakistani knows by heart. The menu struck the perfect balance, authentic, diverse, and focused. I ordered lamb chops, chicken karahi, chicken tikka masala, chicken boti, and naan. The lamb was tender, smoky, and perfectly seasoned, each bite pulling apart like a slow confession. The chicken karahi was a soulful, tomato-forward masterpiece, brimming with ginger and green chili heat that built slowly, never overwhelming. The tikka masala had that rare honesty you rarely find outside a home kitchen, creamy, spiced just right, with depth instead of sweetness. The boti was grilled to perfection, juicy and kissed by fire, and the naan... golden, crisp on the edges, soft in the middle, the kind that makes you forget utensils exist. Everything together felt like a sensory homecoming. For a moment, I wasn’t in San Francisco. I was back in Lahore, sitting on my grandmother’s veranda, her hand running through my hair as the smell of karahi drifted from the kitchen. That’s what Pakwan does. It doesn’t just feed you, it transports you. If you’re looking for something real, something with heart, skip the white tablecloths. Come here, sit down, and let the food remind you what authenticity tastes like.
The food here is too good. Had the opportunity to try the Biriyani as a special and it was just beyond delicious. Very aromatic and not too oily but with the right flavors and tender meat. It was great. I would also recommend trying the kebabs since they are known for that. Recently they have toned down the spice but the taste is great.
Pakistani restaurant Fast service - event peak hours Self-service Medium priced Food portions - are big enough to share Sad ambiance - need some love & maintenance Washroom - needs cleaning & serious upgrade Staff - counter staff needs some American hospitality, they still feel behave as if they are in IÑdįÅ/Pakistan. Lack of welcoming gesture and smile. But there is my most fav person HASHIM🥰 he always welcome with a huge smile and win everyone’s heart 🥰 Food: Nihari - must try - Excellent😍😍😍 Achar gosht - decent taste good Hydrabadi Dum briyani - not authentic Chicken biryani - good Daal Chana - very basic Tondoori chicken leg - Excellent😍😍😍 Boneless chicken boti - Excellent😍😍😍 Samosa - ok types Pakor - don’t ever try plz Chai - don’t ever try plz Regular naan - Hot, fresh & fluffy - Excellent😍😍 Best choice in the city & highly recommend 🥰
This is one of our favorite restaurants. Totally unexpected find while in San Francisco. All street parking so good luck! Tuesday dinner and they had lots of to go orders. The same for a Saturday when we went. That means this place is good. The place was decently decorated but I think they concentrate on their food more. Only one cashier but friendly and helpful service. My kids approved as well. That means a lot. Everything we ordered was excellent from the Garlic Naan, samosas, lamb chops, chicken Tikka Marsala, mango Lassi drink, Saag Paneer, tandoori chicken, but I love their cilantro green sauce on everything! It makes it all even better! Wish they sold the bottle! I would so buy it. Hehe very good portions so be aware to not over order. You will be full fast! I would definitely recommend this place but I would rather eat my food there for freshness.
One of the best restaurants in SFO for desi food !! I'm so glad to have tried their food, best memory of SF. Tastes just like the flavours from back home. Great ambience, the portion sizes were good too. I tried their biryani and it was delicious, the meat was so tender with fresh herbs! The naan was soft, chicken karahi and tikka masala was phenomenal. Good chunky pieces of chicken, very flavourful!!!! Their tandoori chicken was to die for *mouth-watering!!! Also got myself a mango lassi - it was rich and creamy, I happen to try their masala chai which definitely makes you go for a second cup! When it comes to their service, their process was quick and very organised despite having a lot of customers! Their dining process was self service, you grabbed your own plates, silverware and water from the counter at the front. The food is reasonably priced with a great ambiance that provided seating indoors and outdoor by the sidewalk.
Loved lunch here. ONLY ONE NAAN PER PERSON. They’re huge. They’re fluffy. They’re awesome. Order from the specials. Wooohooo mango lassi is also SO good. They have $2 chai. Large veg selection. For 3 people, two dishes and an appetizer was a good amount of food. Super chill spot with fast service. Best naan’s in San Francisco, a rumour has it.
Saag chicken was tasty, samosas weee amazing but the real star was the biryani, which comes piled on a plate as an enormous rice mountain. The caramelized onions make it so addictive. Naan is pillowy and a nice cheap side. Portions are huge. Restaurant is mostly self-service. Can’t wait to return.
I ve beeen going to Pakwan since 2012. I love this rustic hip place .. i am a Indian American man and love food from India/Pakistan region.. the taste / aroma / consistency of the food is very important for me to enjoy goodness from my motherland.. the taste of these dishes are far superior than other restaurants. This is a great spot for vegetarians. I keep going back and back again .. i moved back to San Francisco after 6 years and yesterday i got to enjoy a beautiful lunch with a foodie friend. Will be back and keepup the great work. 🌺🙏🏽

If you're looking for spices to warm up your belly go here. The food is so good. I could do without the mango lassi, for some reason it doesn't hit right from here but everything else is 10/10

Good halal option in San Francisco, not too far from the touristy spots. There is plenty of street parking, and the place has ample dine in space. Service was relatively fast, prices were reasonable, and the food was delicious.
No frills, standard desi fare. Coming in from out of state, this was one of the closest Pakistani restaurant shown by google. Ended up going there for 2 nights. Perfect naan, large sized. Chicken Biryani was ok. Again big portion. Achari chicken was ok. Daal was ok. Chicken karhai didn’t look like karhai. But ok. It was tasty. So overall I’d say not bad. Given we were traveling. Also saw 2 different service levels. Day 1 the girl at the counter. Couldn’t care less about customers. Was in her own world. Day 2 the guy at the counter. Over the top gentleman. Responsive and showed courtesy. Kudos to him. Give him a raise.
We visited on December 24th after reading so many rave reviews, and Pakwan completely delivered. The consensus is right—this is some of the most flavorful food I’ve had in many years. Also, it is halal. We ordered Goat Biryani, BBQ Chicken Legs and Breasts, Chicken Shikh Kebab, Chicken Boti Kebab, Garlic Naan, Cheese Naan, and Plain Naan. The goat biryani came in a huge portion—definitely enough for two people to share. It was incredibly aromatic, with perfectly cooked rice and tender meat. The Chicken Shikh Kebab was okay, nothing extraordinary. The Chicken Boti Kebab was good, but for me, the BBQ chicken was the star of the show: very flavorful, moist, and tender, checking all the boxes for truly great food. All the naans were fresh, fluffy, and delicious. The service was efficient, and the food came out quickly. As many have noted, it’s a no-frills, casual spot with an average ambiance, clearly focused on fantastic food and great value. There are plenty of seating arrangements available, suitable for both small and large groups, and portions are generous for the price. It can get very busy and loud during peak dinner hours, but that’s a testament to how good it is. This is now my go-to spot for a satisfying, flavorful meal in San Francisco. Highly recommended!
Tucked in the Mission’s bustle, this hole-in-the-wall Pakistani spot delivers bold flavors and zero frills. The curries are rich, portions hearty, and service warm like family. Absolute star? The cheese naan—pillowy, gooey, and addictive. Worth the trip every time. Hidden gem status: confirmed.
One of the best Pakistani food in town. Everything I had over here tasted as authentic as it can be but also has a touch of fusion from some of Pakistan's neighbor countries. Clean places, good access to tables, plenty of seating, best mango lassie in town. Food is delicious and perfectly flavored. Naan-bread is really good especially the cheese Naan. BBQ chicken and beef was amazing and the curry goat was out of this world. Finally all to be sealed with a seriously delicious veggie biryani that had the perfect spice level. Love this place and I've been coming here for the past 14 years and with every visit I find myself thinking about how soon I can be back.
Overall not bad at all especially for the price! But the Tikka Masala was a bit lacking in flavor. I thought it was very plain so I couldn’t enjoy it. The lamb biryani was absolutely delicious and I totally recommend it. Also the naan is HUGE so I suggest 1 naan for 2 people. The restaurant inside was a little dirty and the utensils weren’t fully clean. But I would totally come again to eat the food!
Has been good in the past, but recently ordered chicken biryani with basically no chicken - would order something else if you want more than a minuscule of meat

A nice restaurant on the 16th street, San Francisco downtown. It has self service. They have good mutton kebabs. We tried these. We also tried naan with chhole, which was average. Chhole were bland. Veg food is expensive though. One good thing they give unlimited tea. For someone who is a tea lover it’s good. Music was good. Washrooms were neat.
The food is delicious, but the establishment is disgustingly unhygienic - from tables left with leftovers long after guests have left to the dirtiest restroom I've seen in the entire city.\n\nJust …
Once I had dinner at this place for consecutively 5 days. It was that much good. This time I had a very bad experience. The food was so bad that I could not eat. I loved garlic naan. Thanks to them, I dont like it anymore. I am not going back there.
I asked the staff if the food was fresh before ordering, and they assured me it was. Unfortunately, when the food arrived, it was extremely cold (almost like it had been sitting for a long time). Since I am fasting, quality and freshness are very important to me, and the food did not meet expectations. We ended up not eating it. Very disappointed with the experience. I hope the restaurant improves their food quality and freshness in the future.
Review: Chicken Tikka Masala • Rating: 5/10 • Comments: The dish had too much butter or oil separating from the sauce, giving it an unappealing texture. The taste was mediocre, resembling ordinary tomato soup more than the rich and flavorful chicken tikka masala I was expecting. Nihari (Beef Curry) • Comments: The nihari was overly sweet, similar to the chicken tikka masala, which is not typical for this dish. The beef was overcooked and felt like it was just smothered in gravy, lacking the authentic taste and texture of proper nihari. Garlic Naan • Comments: The garlic naan was burnt and lacked the distinct garlic flavor. It was the worst garlic naan I have ever had, which was very disappointing. Service: • Comments: The service was extremely lacking. I had to seat myself, and no one asked if I liked the food or if I needed anything. I had to grab all my own things, making it feel like a fast food experience rather than dining at a restaurant. Given this level of service, I should’ve gone to McDonald’s if I were just going to be brushed off as a customer. Atmosphere: • Seating: Self-seating was required. • Parking: The parking situation was terrible. • Cleanliness: The tables were dirty, which impacted the overall dining experience. Summary: I spent $40 on three items and found the quality to be very disappointing. Despite the good reviews that brought me in, the food and environment did not meet expectations. The dishes were poorly prepared, the service was non-existent, and the cleanliness of the restaurant was lacking. I regret not going to “Curry Me Up” instead, as I believe I would have had a much better experience there.
