The food here is excellent!! The portion sizes are rather large for what you pay. The chow mein dishes here are superb, seriously. Complimentary hot tea is served. The ambience and atmosphere feels a tad dated and sterile...but, that may also be part of its charm. The staff was very bright and energetic.

This is a very good Chinese restaurant. I'm very particular about Chinese food and they have some of the best Hong Kong style pan fried noodles with seafood I've had in Southern California. Many of their dishes are excellent I highly recommend this place, it's a great restaurant.

Super solid lunch specials and excellent, efficient service. Get a nice sit down meal with lots of options, with a cup of hot tea and soup for the price of a fast food burger combo. So far, I've had the orange chicken and house special fish fillet. Both were great. Also, they give you a white chocolate dipped fortune cookie at the end of the meal. They are super good.

The food is great and served in a nice atmosphere. I wish they'd treat their fish in tanks a bit better. Portions are large and can leave you leftovers for future meals. Delicious!

Oak tree inn is the go to spot for excellent Chinese cuisine and better yet excellent service from any restaurants in Los Angeles. Our family has been going here for 2 decades filled of birthdays, anniversaries and other celebrations. They always take good care of us. If you decide to bring your own cake they will cut it up for you. We will keep going to Oak Tree Inn just because they will always treat you like family there. Heads up to always ask for your seasonings and spices right after you order. Since the food will pull up almost all at once. Before your soups come in ask the servers for your white pepper and chili oil! Last but not least, they have fortune cookies dipped in white chocolate 😋. Thank you Oak Tree Inn for staying one of the best and out lasting the rest!

Friendly service. Clean environment. They will walk you through the menu without hesitation. The food is delicious and the quality and taste is consistent. Some of the best Chinese in the Pasadena area. We ordered the bok choy and black mushroom, egg fried rice, green beans and Peking duck. The special tender beef filet, sweet and sour chicken, and sweet and sour fish dishes are delicious as well. Haven’t tried something I don’t like!

This is a family sharing style place. I like the clay pot rice with meat, honey walnut shrimp, garlic string bean (not the spicy one, the spicy one is meh tbh), and beef chow fun. The pork chop is a must try if you haven't yet as well. I'd recommend going during their lunch time if you can because the lunch prices are a good amount cheaper!

A little gem in South Pasadena. Being Asian, we were surprised with finding genuine food in a non-Asian neighborhood. Dishes ordered: prawns, lobster, chicken with gai-lan, seafood soup, and longevity noodles. All tasted really delicious.

This restaurant has incredible food in very decent family portions. Our favorites are their Special Tender Beef and Sweet and Pungent Shrimp. The food is moderately Americanized Chinese but there are a lot of traditional dishes as well, so something for everyone.

Howdy! My co-workers & I & my former wife & I & family have been enjoying the "Oak Tree Inn " restaurant's food for over 16+ years!. Their chefs are top notch & have perfected authentic Chinese food classics. The portions are generous & the prices are fair. One of my fav's is the glazed slippery shrimp with walnuts. Craving Chinese food tonight? Here you go. Thank me later.

We have driven by who knows how many times and said, we need to trying Oak Tree Inn. We finally made the time and must say, we are kicking ourselves for not making the time sooner. Every item we ordered was packed with goodness, the speed of service was crazy, felt we had just put our order in, on a busy Friday night, and our food just appeared. It was awesome. Be back soon

The best Chinese foods I've had in recent years. Someone had spoken highly about this place. So, today I tried it out with my family. All of us were completely impressed with the quality & taste of the 5 dishes we ordered, even their rice & tea tastes great :) Services were really good as well. It was worth the 40 min drive from LA. Definitely coming back again.

LOVE our local authentic Chinese restaurant in South Pasadena! We don't have to go to Alhambra or Monterey Park to get good Chinese Food. Not inexpensive, but not overly expensive either. If you want to have an option for a nice Chinese restaurant in South Pasadena, eat here often so we always have it here and available!

Love this place. Great, friendly service, excellent yummy food. Especially love the Chefs special tender beef filet. It's a must order. Also had war wanton soup, string beans with pork and assorted appetizers and combo fried rice. All delicious. Service is friendly and fast. The wait staff make you feel like they are happy you've come. I like that the dining room decor includes table linens and interesting art and light fixtures, yet feels comfortable and welcoming. My in-laws and wife have been going here for much longer than our marriage. It is a nice place, kept clean and staffed with friendly servers. We always go during the afternoon and enjoy the lunch items and especially the prices. The great prices allows us to order more entrees, normally too many and always get to enjoy our meal a second time for dinner. Thank you for the great food and service.

Oak Tree is a family favorite that we keep on visiting after so many years. The food is consistently delicious! Our favorites are the deep fried fish, fried calamari, sweet and sour fish filet, broccoli with garlic sauce, sweet and pungent shrimp, and the crispy combination chow mein. The Yang Chow fried rice and Singapore noodles are also good! My mom likes the clams with green onions, while my brother likes the Peking style pork chop. Everything that we've ordered has been wonderful! The service is prompt and friendly. They even allow you to bring your own dessert, so we've had a few family birthdays here. You can't go wrong with Oak Tree!

First time visiting Oak Tree Inn. As we got seated the entire restaurant filled up on a Sunday lunch hour. We opted for the lunch special and the food taste great. The flavor and presentation was well prepared. The staff speaks Cantonese too as they serve the area customers. They gave a starter hot and sour soup, streamed white rice and ended with fortune cookie dipped in white chocolate.

Absolutely love this place for authentic Chinese and Chinese-American food. The portions are very generous and shareable/family style and the prices are hard to beat considering the food quality (food is delivered fresh daily). This place is often full so be sure to make a reservation for dinner. I've always had luck coming in around 3pm/4pm. My favorite dishes are the sweet and pungent shrimp, orange chicken, Sichuan shrimp and Mongolian beef but I'm pretty sure you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. I also love the green tea they serve at your table. Service has always been personable and prompt. If you're in the area definitely go!

I've passed this place a million times yet never tried it till today, in August 2025. It's great! I highly recommend the food here. Everything we ordered was quite tasty. Will definitely be coming back! The ambience is nothing to write home about, however, it is not terribly bright and sterile like some places can be. Tip: Alcohol is not mentioned on their menu but they do have beer and a full bar! That said, their Thai iced tea is pretty damn good.

Oh man, the food here… everything is so good! My top orders: - three flavor rice soup that was served in the beginning. It has rice, shrimp, green snaps, and fish😍 - honey glazed walnut shrimp - peking duck with bun - yang chow fried rice - lobster - scrambled egg with shrimp Make sure to book ahead Oh amazing fortune cookies too😀

One of the more traditional Chinese spots in Pasadena. Given the proximity to SG, Alhambra, and Monterey Park, aka 626, I would say Oak Tree delivers in traditional authentic Chinese food. I've been here multiple times. Service is quick and efficient w nice portions. Food is seasoned and not bland. The menu is pretty extensive (3-4 pgs). I ordered and dined multiple times. It's been consistent on almost all occasions. Seems like it draws in the neighborhood local, which I love.

Very good Chinese food in south Pasadena. We’ve been coming here for 25 years. The Atmosphere bright, roomy, clean. They have live seafood tanks and lunch specials. Lots of parking and there free. They can accommodate large party. No reservations needed for under 6 people. If your in this area, it is worth a taste.

I’ve been to this place numerous times over the years and it’s one of the best Chinese restaurants in California. Excellent menu selection and great customer service. Today we ordered the walnut shrimp, crispy chow mein house special, spicy pork chop and Chinese sausage fried rice along with chicken corn soup. The walnut shrimp is always great here and the crispy chow mein is a solid selection. The spicy pork chop is alway delicious when paired with the sausage fried rice. The chicken corn soup has always been a great starter too. I highly recommend this spot and there’s a lot of items to choose from. Peak times parking can get limited but worth the wait.

Lobster on par with Boston lobster. Two of the best in south California. Egg yolks fried crab is an interesting idea but not quite pulled it off compared to classic styles like ginger and green onions. Regarding the remaining dishes, the Cantonese style diced fillet mignon is excellent, and recommended. Something Luna Asia should learn from. Fried oysters good to very good, oil temperature a little high made the batter a hair too dark. Fried rice is above average, except I prefer it without diced carrots. Steamed fish has exacting temperature control so texture is excellent, if the flavoring of the sauce is better, it would be a home run. Young bean plant is excellent, enough garlic and I can't find fault anywhere. The stuffed chicken skin was a slight backward step, and was not as good as the bomb pre-covid. The shrimp paste recipe changed both in texture and flavouring, slightly gummy and bland, but on the whole still is good to fair. Recommended for novelty appeal because nobody else I know do this dish. Overall firmly recommended. Much better than Luna Asia, and slightly cheaper than Boston lobster.

My wife and I and including our friends decided to have Chinese meal then our friends tell us about the Chinese restaurants in South Pasadena called the Oak Tree Inn. My wife and I surprised there's a Chinese restaurant in that location we throught it was a motel for years but it was a restaurant. Our friends say they never been there but other family members been there and they say the food is really good. We step in the restaurant we were surprise how nice inside the restaurant is then the hostess show us to the table and hand each of us a menu then we order our drinks. We were at the menu and what we like to order then we decided order we order orange chicken and walnut shrimp and BBQ pork fried rice and crispy beef, and other items. The food is really amazing good big portions and why we share. I really enjoy the walnut shrimp and BBQ pork fried rice and other dishes were delicious my wife and our friends love it. We need come back again.

I’ve been coming here for family special events since 1992. This is my go-to spot for authentic Cantonese dishes served family-style. If you’re only ordering for yourself, then leftovers will be your new favorite meal. Why stick with boring Panda dishes when you could have an entire pan-fried Cantonese style chicken or a whole plate of tofu! My standards are the green beans, Chef Special filet, and fried-tofu.

Clean place, sweet and sour pork and chicken chow mein very tasty 😋 not expensive 😊

Above average Chinese food if you do not want to shlep to San Gabriel or Monterrey Park. It is pricey compared to what you can buy there but again you are in South Pasadena/ Pasadena/ San Marino area. You will have clean table cloths for those that are not used to traditional fine dining or lack of Asian eating. The help is Asian and owned by Asians so you non Asians looking for authentic food without getting scared of going into New Chinatown you will be a-ok. Take out is easy too.

Food is always good, but service is “meh”. Most of the servers are great, but there’s one old grumpy man. Atmosphere is okay. I gave it two stars bc there were flies around that we had to keep swatting away.

The food was great !! BUT they kept hurrying us up to leave it was my granddaughter graduation so we all arrived at around 8:10 pm one of the gentlemen said hurry or we can’t feed you I understand they have a set schedule but we didn’t arrive to late they close at 9:00 pm and they stood right in top of us waiting for them to pick up are plates so we can hurry up faster it was just a lil uncomfortable for ME but other than that it was good food I will be going back just a lil earlier so I won’t be pressured to hurry and swallow 😁. So my stars are low because of the atmosphere were you have all the waiters just waiting for you to leave!!!

This restaurant has been in business for many years. Their food tastes good and is pretty consistent. Their Lunch Specials come with rice and soup. If you order takeouts from the lunch special menu, bring your own container for the soup. I was not aware that I had to supply my own soup container. I ended up paying for the container in order to bring the soup home.

A good Chinese restaurant in South Pasadena, often overlooked by the vast majority of newer Chinese population in San Gabriel Valley. I think because of the multi-racial customer base, many local Chinese may think it's not "authentic", but nothing could be further from the truth! For one, the restaurant's "banquet style" Chinsse food is really quite delicious and on part with other local Chinese restaurants. I think Oak Tree only loses our due to its limited dining room space. Please visit, even the lunch special selection is quite excellent!

Pleasant surroundings, a sizable menu, good food, friendly staff, and reasonable prices make this place a good find. They serve southern Chinese and Cantonese cuisine and are slightly upscale in that they use cloth table cloths and cloth napkins. Live seafood is also on the menu. They are setup for family style eating in that you order dishes and your table shares them with one another. This method allows you to try many more dishes depending upon the size of your group. They have a parking lot they share with a strip mall but they are in their own building separate from the rest. There is also street parking available.

M
Michael Walker

Fried pork chop, green beans, sauteed beef, Walnut shrimp, fried rice, egg drop soup, were all great. The service was fast and the food all came out almost at the same time. I just wish they would take reservations for large parties next time so you don't have to wait 45 minutes to be seated. There's not enough seated waiting area and some of the patrons were elderly standing around.

Solid food, primarily classic Cantonese. I've had their green onion oyster, and it was quite good.. and I'm not a big fan of oysters! Their lunch specials are a little pricey, but come with generous portions, soup and rice. When they get busy, service can slow and their free parking lot fills up quickly during peak hours.

I went here with my family on Sep 21st. We ordered Singaporean noodles and chicken and other items. We didn’t like the Singaporean noodles that much because it didn’t have that much sauce. The chicken was okay. We also got walnut shrimp. It was perfect. The walnut to shrimp ratio was amazing. The food was delicious and we’d eat here again.

Not a bad place for Chinese food. I have passed this many times but never had gone in for food. Today, my friend invited me for lunch and he happened to be in South Pasadena. When I first went in, I didn’t think they would have authentic Chinese food. But I was wrong. When the food came out, the taste of the dishes was in par with the foods in Alhambra and Monterey Park next door. I especially like their mandarin pork chop which is a sweet and sour pork chop. On the pork belly with preserved vegetables dish, the taste was on the light side. The seasoning hadn’t completely penetrated the meats yet. For the scallops and asparagus dish, the flavor was right on. I guess this restaurant passed my taste test for authentic Chinese food.

J
JO Na

I've had several meals in the past here and was really impressed. It wasn't as good this time. The crab did not seem very fresh. The rest of the food was just so-so. The peking duck was served without the bone. The food was just not memorable. Might be just an off day?

2025: This used to be one of our favorite Chinese restaurants. Obviously, it does not compare to Mr. Chow's, but we enjoyed Chinese classics at a bargain price. Service was (and still is) always nice - the ambiance reflects the price point they have. Over the years, my wife and I have surely been 50+ times, and I have awarded five stars almost every time we've gone. Sadly, we watch the quality constantly decline. It's still "not bad" - particularly considering their fantastic lunch menu prices - but not bad is ... not bad. We are now at a point where my wife and I would favour the Express fast food place with the Chinese bear ;-) over having lunch here. A shame, really. Before 2024: The best Chinese food I had in a long long time. We have been with six, sharing different dishes - a blast. Share the soup! Highly recommended. Thanks for reading my comment. Now, if you are curious enough about my "rating scheme", here's "the moment of truth. I am a music photographer who has traveled the world with the world's greatest musical talents (Michael Jackson, AC/DC, Rolling Stones, and Rammstein, to name a few) for almost 40 years. When being asked "Where do you live" I tended to ask "in hotels". At my peak, I "shot" 250 shows a year. Will say: been there, saw and tasted it, and a lot, as I may say, and much to the dismay of my doctor who is in my back to lose a few pounds. Quite a few, as I may add, which is why my wife and I walk ten thousand steps per day, where- and whenever we can - and explore a lot of new exciting places - places you may oversee when just driving by. While I love to share my experience with others, I am sometimes shocked at how people use their "power of the word" to down-rate amazing places because of minor incidents (in my all-time favorite restaurant Le Petit Four on Sunset Plaza the owner was even called a racist as he refused to toast the (free) bread in his packed restaurant - they simply do not offer toasted bread, as no French place does, as I may add). Or I just read "Chicken piccata so over-salted I hope the dog enjoys the leftovers tomorrow, I brought home most of the dish." Did they speak to their service? How could the restaurant learn that something was wrong when patrons even have their leftovers boxed to take home? As a dog owner, I want to take the writer and shake him or her really bad and say "You give over-salted food to your dog? Anyone with a bit of brain understands this is a horrible idea... I hope you agree. So If I had a say on this portal, I would offer just to see the ratings of my friends. So I would see what the ratings were by like-minded people. Sadly, I have no say. I try not to compare apples with oranges. A place like this does not correspond to "The Ritz". At first, I assume that a restaurant is clean, they do not greet you with a gun - and they deliver whatever they promise. I do not give stars for things that are expected. In my rating scheme, three or more stars are awarded if they actually exceed my expectations. Four, if I am sure I will come back. To achieve five stars, I must be willing to take a detour of thirty minutes or more to go again. Thank you for reading this.

Its gone down hill this last couple years. The food was good, but not as good as it used to be. The service was terrible. We waited too long for our food, and to get waited on in general. I used to swear by this place, but it looked like they were struggling with not enough wait staff. I feel sorry for the fish and lobster in that tank as you walk to your table too, knowing its going to be on someones plate eventually. Sad. I didn't have the hot and sour soup this time which is the best here, kind of wish I had. Maybe it will be better next time.

I ordered the Curry chicken and unfortunately it barely had any chicken in it. A total of 3 small bite size pieces.

My friend loves this place, I think he grew up eating here so he is a bigger fan than I am. I think it’s okay, but I find most of the meals I’ve had here a little bland. The staff seems kind of grumpy but maybe that’s the way it is at some of these places.

We went as a group of 16 and had to wait over an hour to get two tables that weren't next to each other. The service wasn't good. The server just went to one table which gave the food order for both tables but didn't get our drink order. Had to wait a while to finally get our drinks. Refills took long also. When we finished they packed the one tables left overs but just took boxes to the other. Had to ask to get fortune cookies. There is no baby changing station in either bathroom. For a bill over $500 not including tip I expect better service.

I went there on11/10/24 Sunday and we had ordered several dishes included Snow pea Vegetable. During lunch I bit the plastic thing and broke my tooth on front I’d asked Danny the general manager and showed him . He dropped plastic thing on the ground and He found it gave it to me. After I went Dentist but He was Jury Duty. After 10 days later I see him and get estimated. I gave to Danny directly to him I’m still looking for treatment but no answer until now

Food is just about average considering there are way too many amazing Chinese restaurants in LA; however, the attitude of my waiter and (probably) the manager is even below the average. They treat customers differently for whatever reason and unfortunately, I received rather worse service than the customers sitting beside me (I visited there myself, only ordered 2 meals, did not create a bunch of mess and said thank you every time when the waiter came to my table, so there is DEFINITELY NOT ANY SIGN THAT I BEHAVE POORLY in the restaurant). They are receiving such a high review probably because there are not so many Chinese restaurants in South Pasadena compared to DTLA or Monterrey Park, but this one for me is definitely a not-to-come-again.

Their website says they're open till 10 PM. Their Apple Maps entry says they're open till 10 PM. Their sign said "OPEN." We drove all the way here from Ontario on the recommendation of a friend (with apparently questionable taste) and walked in at 8:50 PM. The owner silently turned the sign to "CLOSED." He gave us a dirty look and then walked away, making clear that we were not welcome. It would be comical if it weren't so unbelievably incompetent and rude. I'm sure we'll laugh about it someday. But we'll never return.

We went to this restaurant for lunch this morning, its 9pm and I'm still pooping in the restroom. Nothing to add

This was only our second time ordering from here. The first time was fine, but this experience was extremely concerning. We found a large metal nail inside our food while we were halfway through eating. I’m honestly very worried that I may have swallowed something else without realizing it and hope I don’t get sick. This could have easily resulted in a hospital visit—finding a metal object in food is both dangerous and completely unsanitary. Since this was a takeout order and we were already home, we tried calling the restaurant with no luck. My husband then had to drive back to show them what was found and request a refund. At first, the person at the register only refunded the orange chicken that contained the nail. My husband had to specifically ask to speak with a manager to get the full order refunded. It was frustrating and disappointing that we even had to push for that given the seriousness of the situation
