A very nice vegetarian only restaurant around this area, we loved eating here we tried the mini thali, which is perfectly crafted and well tasted, the pongal with avail was freshly prepared and very good in taste, the sugar cane juice was very refreshing and the Badam Halwa was exceptionally delicious, the filter coffee is the best to end our meal, the staff is very friendly and hospitable, I strongly recommend this restaurant for some Karnataka style vegetarian food we will definitely come back to try some more dishes.
I only dine in - but whenever I do the food is first rate and never a disappointment. Overall best South Indian food imo in Houston. And overall everything on the menu is of standard. Highly recommend Udipi as go to Indian restaurant in Houston.
Food and service was fabulous! Wish we had an Udpi Cafe in Denver!
We visited Udipi Cafe during our trip to Houston last weekend. Started with rasam soup, for mains - South Indian express, sada dosa, rava masala dosa, malai kofta with roti, mango lassi and filter coffee. All food items were tasty, I loved their sambhar (authentic). Good food along with prompt and cordial service made our visit enjoyable!
I don't live in Sugar Land, but when I'm there, I always want a stop at Udipi Cafe. Fresh, delicious, and always hot. I'm celiac and I've never had any exposure. The dosas are excellent and I love their papadam.
My favorite Indian restaurant in Sugar Land. Healthy homestyle South Indian food with a great buffet. They recently relocated from their old address on Highway 6 to a new location a bit further North near Hwy 6 and Williams Trace. Food is just as great as it always has been.
All the food items we ordered were pretty good.
The staff were warm and attentive, offering great recommendations for first-timers. I loved the ambiance—it felt cozy and welcoming. Highly recommend this place for anyone craving authentic Indian cuisine or looking to explore bold and delicious flavors!
My wife and I just really like the food here. Reminds us of another vegetarian south Indian restaurant we used to go to in a far away land. Generous portions and a good price too.
Restaurant Review for udipi cafe I recently had the pleasure of dining at udipi cafe, and it was an exceptional experience from start to finish. The moment I walked in, I was greeted by a warm and friendly staff that immediately made me feel welcome. The ambiance was perfect - cozy yet elegant, with soft lighting and tasteful decor that set the tone for a delightful evening.
Excellent. Rava dosa was perfect. Vada sambar was delicious. Don’t forget to have warm Pineapple Seera if you have sweet tooth.
Udipi is the most consistent restaurant we know of. Dishes are always great, be it North Indian or South Indian. The place has a cozy atmosphere that reminds us of back home.
Our experience was wonderful , the food was made fresh and to our taste buds ( we preferred less salt and it was great !) First time take out and blown away with the service and fresh yummy dinner . They were closing shortly but they did accommodate us. Grateful ! 🙏🥰🎊💐
Food and service are always excellent. We especially enjoy their buffet. This place never disappoints.
My wife and I absolutely love this place! The staff if friendly and the food is delicious! I always look forward to coming here. It is a must-visit place in Sugar Land, especially if you are following a vegetarian, vegan, or plant-based diet!
The buffet was good. It had the south indian taste. Pure vegetarian restaurant. Filter coffee at the end gave a nice ending to the meal.
I love bringing friends and family here because the food is tasty and the staff and owner are friendly. It's all vegetarian with plenty of vegan options on the menu and in the buffet. The dosas are amazing!
Best South Indian food in Houston! The button idli and filter coffee is my favorite.
Highly recommend! Took my mom here and she loved it as well. Several tasty vegetarian options. Great customer service on behalf of Luis, our waiter. He was so busy but, was always attentive and patient to our needs. They also enforce social distancing between tables and have hand sanitizer at all tables. Can't wait to take my husband here.
Excelllent food; excellent service by everyone including owner and Luis (staff). Our go to South Indian meal. Best dosa.
Food is amazing every single time I walk in. Staff is super friendly and the speed of service is wonderful, highly recommend for anyone.
We just had an excellent lunch at Udipi restaurant in Sugarland, Texas. They have added new lunch combos to their menu. They are reasonably priced and freshly prepared. The vegetable biryani with coconut gravy korma and side of raita and pickle was terrific. I would come here again anyday. They have other lunch combos to try next time. Must eat here for authentic, clean and fresh South Indian vegetarian cuisine. The wait staff was prompt and courteous. The complimentary rasam offered at the start of our meal was delicious!! Vidula Joshi Houston, Texas
Amazing Food and amazing service. Quick and delicious, Portions are extremely filling
Wonderful experience, delicious food, lots of selections, and great service- wouldn’t change a thing and will definitely be coming back! Thank you!
It was blissful authentic Karnataka vegetarian cuisine, the background of flute with Thaye yesoda.., Bisibelabath, Idly Sambar, Express lunch with Upma, dosa was excellent, ending with south Indian filter coffee, so much varieties, this was a find for us & learnt they have been for 25 years. Thanks a lot!
Udipi cafe is one of the best South Indian restaurant in sugarland. Highly recommend!
Great home cooked food! The buffet spread is great! Even after a full meal we feel good walking out of the restaurant not feeling super heavy! Our weekly brunch spot
It's always a pleasure to come over here and enjoy tasty food in a peaceful atmosphere ❤️
Everything soo fresh. Tasty and amazing. Must try. Their dosa. Chola bhatura
Incredible! Came from out of town and tried so many dishes and everything was so good! Especially the Malai Kofta!
The food here is always tasty and fresh. The lady owner and the staff are gracious, courteous, and friendly. I really enjoy the delicious weekend buffet which has different selections every week.
Loved the south Indian express, and aloo paratha. Being an avid foodie, I can vouch for their quality of food. Must visit....
Loved this place! The dosas taste just like home—fresh, authentic, and delicious. The ambience is warm and friendly, perfect for a relaxed meal.
Awesome food! Dosa, idli, vada and all the fixins! Service is also always top notch and genuine.
Beautiful place and atmosphere. Very good quality food. Love how the kitchen is 100% vegetarian
Really enjoyed the thali at Udupi Cafe.Sugar Land. Sugarcane juice is a must try. Complimentary rasam tasted great. Overall, the food is close to authentic Karnataka Udupi style. The jackfruit curry was exceptionally well cooked truly impressive. The staff is great, service is excellent, and the place is clean and well maintained.
First time I visited this restaurant with a friend, who visited from India. I was surprised for the taste, quality and price of a Royal Thali. One of the best place for an Indian Vegetarian food in Houston area.
Udipi is a true hidden gem in Sugar Land. The food was authentic, fresh, and bursting with flavor. Every dish we tried exceeded expectations, and the service was warm and attentive. If you’re looking for top-notch South Indian food, this is the spot. Highly recommend and can’t wait to go back!
Love this place, serves delicious south indian vegetarian food. I love their Ragi Dosa & Medhu vada, its one if my favorite and regular food to eat at this place. They serve warm Rasam as a complementary drink/soup. Great service by Loui and his colleague every time I have been here. They are very quick on their feet and ensure that you are attended to with a smile. When the owner is around they come over and check on each table to ensure guests are happy with their food and service. This is definitely a place to come back. I highly recommend to anyone wanting vegetarian south Indian food.
We go here a lot and udipi also catered at my wedding. The food is consistently good which is impressive but the service can vary which I know is not the restaurant’s fault . We had dinner tonight and was disappointed by the rudeness of the servers. They messed up our orders twice and seemed upset when we asked them to make it right. The waiter also hovered over us when we paid to make sure we tipped (which we would have despite the terrible service )
Went there based on the recommendation of others and to be frank, it was a little hyped for what others said. Maybe it was an off day. Ordered the salty lassi to drink and the saltiness level approached sea water! Way too much salt, so much so we had to send it back and get a mango lassi instead. The Royal South Indian Thai was very nice albeit a little blander than the thalis I had in South India itself. The roti that came with it was shockingly hard. It was a roti that was prepared, put it the fridge/freezer and just reheated. We also had the bhature and it was not as soft and bland as a normal bhature should be. Overall, I felt the cafe catered to regulars and didn't try hard enough to make it an eating experience. The food was one dimensional in herbs and spices, service was strictly cafe level (which was expected as it did call itself a cafe!) and the appetizers were way too expensive considering it a veg. A cafe that is OK but punches above it's weight class, and it shows. Attention to detail with the food is the first I would tackle.
Hillcroft and Sugar Land both locations are our regular dine-in spots, and both consistently provide good experiences. However, on our last visit to the Sugar Land location, the masala dosa didn’t meet the high standards we’ve come to expect—it seemed off compared to before. Perhaps there’s been a change in the kitchen staff? We hope on our next visit masala dhosa will be as good as before. The owner is very nice and attentive.
We were looking to grab quick lunch as it was almost past 2 pm . As soon as we Reached , got parking and table too . The aunty was quite hospitable, came to check on us for our order and explained about lunch buffet . My husband went for it & enjoyed . I ordered Idli sambhar which was quite filling. Service was fast so we were out in 30 mins . Thank you
I have been to the Cafe with my family on a weekend and ordered Buffet Lunch. The food was very tasty and good. I liked my favorite item 'Avail' which was excellent. We didn't like the taste of the Vada. Except that, the whole menue was excellent. The owner was personally monitoring and helping her customers in serving the food and inquiring about the food taste. Staff was also helpful. When we went on 15.11.2025 the women's toilet was locked and several ladies have to use men's toilet. The same was immediately brought to the notice of the Cafe's manager.
The freshly prepared vegetarian menu was delightful. We tried the lunch buffet, and every dish that cooked was tasty. The service was nice, and staff ensured the buffet was consistently replenished whenever an item ran out. However, they could improve by offering better dessert options. Overall, it's a recommended spot for vegetarian food!
Authentic South Indian food cafe. I enjoyed the food specially both the chutney(green coconut and orange color sambar), Sambar was decent. I would recommend South Indian express thali if anyone is visiting first time. Also must try filter coffee - it’s really strong. Paper dosa, rava dosa & spring dosa are good too. I didn’t like masala chai. Price range is pretty decent and inexpensive. Ambiance is good, lots of photos with Bollywood celebs. I felt like place is under staffed so bit delay in service but over all I enjoyed my lunch.
Average food. Ordered paneer dish but looked like they served tofu instead. Sambar was little spicy unlike real Udupi sambar which tends to be on sweeter side. Idly was ok, soft. Pineapple kesari was made in canola oil or some cheap oil rather than ghee, it was tasteless. They have put photos of celebrities visiting the place, I too visited from North TX. Those are just marketing gimmicks. Celebrities endorse anything when paid. Overall it’s just average.
We were the only family eating at around 4.00 PM, we ordered thali, they took some time, but food was served hot and they took time making things which indicated they wanted to serve fresh(hopefully not to heat up stuff). Taste wise, not there with other Indian vegetarian restaurants in Houston are only average, overall OK😌
Came here after a gap. The overall experience level was lower than previous experiences. Other indian resturants in Houston has improved their standards so experience here was kind of lukewarm.
Hands down one of the best crispiest dosas I have ever had in US. I’m from Bangalore where even small restaurants make the best Masala dosas. In Houston I couldn’t find any place who make such good dosas. But here the dosas were really crispy. I would have given 5 stars if the potato stuffing was fresh and if sambhar was more thicker!!
I have been there a handful of times. The dosas are good. The masala stuffing is average, mostly the spicing is just not fully there. Similar for some of the other dishes. The service is attentive and the servers are very courteous and on the ball. I usually end up at a restaurant like Udipi when I have a craving for dosas or south Indian food. My last experience was disappointing and the craving for good south Indian food remains.
The food was good..the service was excellent.. But what disappointed me was that I was charged 3% extra on.my credit card because I paid by credit card my check was over $30.00 plus I gave 15% service charges.. This is the only restaurant I have been in Sugar land or Houston which has this kind of payment for credit cards .. I found this system really cheap for a country like USA.. I have been going to this restaurant for so many years and didn't expect this cheap system.. really disappointed hence the 3.0 rating
I recently moved to Texas and was looking for a good South Indian restaurant. Their food is either hit or miss. Their sambar is very thin and watery. The Spanish guy over there is the best employee. He actually is polite and respectful to the customers. The older Indian guy, I’m assuming is the owner. He is RUDE and has no sense of customer service. I do not appreciate anyone talking down to the customers or the employees. This guy does both. Over all, Udipi cafe would not be my first choice for a South Indian food.
The location is convenient. Service was mediocre. We were the only customers dining in and the server was hosting, taking acre of to go orders and serving us. My daughter accidentally spilled some water and he did not even attempt to clean it. We cleaned the area ourselves and got new napkins etc. The sev puri and dahi puri needed more flavor. We got extra chutneys, but it still was not flavorful. The dosas- rava masala and paper dosa we tried were decent. The pav bhaji was not good either and needed flavor, even my 12yo daughters did not like it. Overall, it’s not upto par with many Indian restaurants in the area and Houston area. Overpriced for what we got. We tried it due to convenience, but will not be returning.
The food is just okay for the price and being vegetarian. The fact that it is dine in only keeps me from giving 3 stars. I don’t have to go back.
I’m really disappointed with my experience. The restaurant added a mandatory service charge 18% even though our table had only 5 people, which is not what most places consider a large group. This was not clearly explained or highlighted beforehand only wrote with small words and it felt misleading when the bill arrived.
The food was extremely disappointing and did not taste like South Indian cuisine at all. The flavors were completely off and lacked authenticity. Nothing resembled traditional South Indian food, and it was clear the dishes were not prepared with an understanding of Indian cooking. Overall, the taste was poor and not worth the price. A complete waste of money and definitely not recommended if you’re looking for real South Indian food.
Very poor quality food. Cheese dosa had poor quality cheese and raw cheese. Sambar and chutney didn’t taste good. I would avoid and go to Saravana Bhavan for South Indian. Sorry this team has work to do.
Food was good. The cashier slapped a 18% service tax for some apparent reason without prior intimation. Feel somewhat duped after the whole thing. Definitely not going bad which saddens me because the food and servers were actually great.
I am giving 1 star because of the owner’s rude behavior and customer service. The food here is alright but you can get similar or better quality at Saravana Bhawan or Bombay Delights. This was my second time here. My son ordered a paneer dosa, I ordered a ghee roast dosa (different from butter dosa) and my nephew ordered a rava masala dosa. The server brought out 2 dosas first and said it was a butter dosa and a special onion dosa. None of these we had ordered. My husband went and told the owner about this mistake. Instead of apologizing for their mistake they were defiant and were trying to put the blame on us. I tried to be empathetic toward the waiter who took the order and said that I understood mistakes could happen. At this the lady at the desk, presuming the owner, told me rather obnoxiously that the waiter had been working for 20 years and knows how to take orders and how to write orders. I was shocked at this! She was trying to imply that all on a sudden we changed our minds when the order arrived! My dining experience with family was ruined by her bitterness. She can live with her average food and her big ego and her infallible waiter. I am not going back when I can have way better service and behavior just across the street.
I don't know what changed within the past 6 months or so but the quality and service has gone down. Been a return customer for over 2 years and we order takeout at least once a month, always at least $70 worth. Everytime we order they always say 15-20 min, but we give at least 30-40 min. The past 5 times we gone to pick up, order wasn't even entered, and couple of those times we ordered and paid online but the guy said they didn't get the order once we arrived (he didn't acknowledge the order online). Yesterday we ordered via phone, guy said 20 min and when we got there 25 min later, he didn't even give the ticket to the kitchen. Was told another 10-15 min but actually waited another 40 min. Time to look for another Indian restaurant
This rating is not for food as we didn’t get to taste. We were 2 and 2 joining us so occupied a 6 seater near the window- The server was arguing and asking to occupy smaller table. I mentioned we are early for lunch and that are 90% big & small tables available- yet he was too LOUD & said that is the rule. Customers come for good food & ambience. We lost our apetite dealing with the server & left. Hope the management sees & addresses for rest of the customers.
Called 45 minutes ahead of time for order. Arrived at pickup time and waited an additional 45 minutes after arriving to receive food. Entire time the status was “it’s almost ready. It’s being packed”. If it was forgotten or going to take an additional 30 minutes, be straight with the customer. No apology or anything extra for the wait. Never returning. Terrible place. Many other Indian restaurants to enjoy in Houston.
My experience here was extremely poor. We ordered a few south and North Indian items. Firstly, they forgot an item we ordered and the server was very rude. Secondly they served thali with no papad and when we asked they said it doesn’t come. We pulled up the menu and showed them and they said, should we get it now? This is after we were done with dinner. The quality of food was below average. We love Saravana bhavan. We just tried a new place thinking we should give it a chance and we regret it. Sub average food is one thing, but rude service is unacceptable! Never visiting this place again.
My family has been going to Udipi for years..I even hired this group to serve food for an event during my wedding. I ordered a Paneer Kofta with rice To Go. My 2 year old Son got sick, my wife got sick and I got sick for 2 days (Friday take out for Dinner and today is Sunday). Looks like they freeze their food and do not cook fresh hot food. I will never go to this unhealthy, not fresh restaurant again and I will be sure to inform my entire family about this place. Bombay Delight - Leena makes fresh hot food. Much better place down the street. No wonder this place only had 1 customer dining in when I walked in to pick up my order during dinner time on a Friday night.
Food was good. However, they treat desis distinctly in a worse manner than non-desis. Another non-desi customer dining next to us was checked upon at least 4 times by server and owner. For us, we had to wait and ask for our order, water refill, check etc. Server or owner didn't once check on us for anything. Considering most of their clientele is desi, desi customers should expect worse treatment at this place.
Ordered royal South Indian thali. Deeply disappointed, no flavor, no spice, no flavor or curry leaves. Why you have samosa when u can not make samosas, flavorless potatoes in samosas. Horrible food… don’t recommend it to anyone. Manager was rude and had attitude.
Very bad customer service and straight forward attitude of the Staff receiving phone calls. I called yesterday night for Togo order at 8:55 for button idli and I told the guy am coming in 10 mins and he told me we are closing in 5 mins but on online the timing shows us it's open till 9:15 so we have to take a u turn from pizza 101 I was almost nearby to Udipi restaurant not even 5 mins and this is not the first time I have ordered before and pick up at 9:05 or 9:10 also but if you guys don't want to take orders till 9:15 so pls change the time on Google. Thank you
Came here this past Saturday. Their water is good. The one star for the fellow that brought the food and the water. We walked in and weren't greeted to know if we seat ourselves or are seated. A couple came in after us and just seated themselves. We followed suit. Unsurprisingly the waiter with visible bad attitude served them first. He was at the front when we initially arrived, he was too busy with the woman at the front to acknowledge us. We received dal with no bowls or plates. The dal was bland and had an additive thickened consistency. Our masala dosas were a bit sweet and soggy. Sambar is from a powder mix... our chaat, pani puri and dahi papdi, came out last and had little flavor. I watched several people come in not knowing if to seat themselves. The woman at the front only does transactions otherwise not helpful. Our waiter tumbled into a toddler at the table next to us. His body language showed his annoyance. Someone at the table apologized. A few moments later the child started crying. The waiter did not console her.
Horrible experience, the food was not fresh. I would not come to this establishment again the owner was very rude he even argued with a client. Horrible customer service. I don’t recommend. I don’t usually leave reviews, but I have to just due to the horrible service I had when I went.
If I could give negative stars I would, I will never go here again . The owner is so disrespectful. The food was cold . Don’t waste your time or money here.
This restaurant is absolute disappointment. The staff showed zero courtesy , no flexibility and no interest in customer satisfaction.. they care more about squeezing money out of guests than providing a decent dining experience
The food was good, even though they dont serve enough rice with curry. The server and cook nails were filthy broken, the server coughed at my kids face without steering away and i got so mad! He treated us terribly and for no reason as i can see him sitting pointing at us and talking to his coworkers. We would ask for extra food he won’t stand to listen but take one word and rush to leave very disrespectful. The prices online looked way different than in person with a 5-6 dollars extra, and they said it is in person prices that we go by, with attitude. I would love to come back if they manage to improve, the curries were good for me. Customer service was really bad.
Do not recommend if you’re looking for real South Indian food. The food and flavors are extremely disappointing.
Decided to try out this for the first time, found a hair in my food, normally places I would assume would want to make it right. They refused to bring me new food though. Definitely won’t be back.
Discrepancy in billing. Food taste not to expectations and not worth. Purchased a plate of simple idlis (qty 2) for take out. Waitress showed us a menu which mentioned $5.99. During billing, requested a paper bill idli was charged $6.17 plus tax. After questioning, their team member said the menu is old and prices have increased. This is not about the money, it’s about honesty. We requested the team to print new menu with latest pricing.
Service was good. But food on buffet was mediocre. Dry pineapple kesari. Dough for vada and dosa had sour taste. Not much variety. It’s not worth the price. Only good dish was puri and palak paneer.
Expectations for Udipi Cafe were high, but the visit was disappointing. The service was severely lacking, as the staff was not friendly and seemed indifferent. The food itself was no better. Next!
Looks like the Udipi folks are falling in line with the shrinkflation thing on top of price increases. Bombay Delights, here we come!
The lady that is the head or owner is super rude. The ambience is horrible and she has no respect for customers. This isn’t the first time I’ve experienced something like this. I would recommend going to a different restaurant to save yourself a peace of mind when eating with family.
The food was very cold and uncooked. The soup was straight up water with spices. The potatoes were uncooked and cold . The main dish was hard and not very unappetizing. For the service it was ok. The worked always looked towards my table which made me very uncomfortable. Overall the place was not good would not recommend.
We ordered through Uber Eats for lunch, we were very hungry only to discover that the vegetable Pulav and Tamarind rice was distasteful. Pulav was one of the worst food I had in my life. By the smell & taste I can definitely say that it was not a freshly cooked food. Tamarind rice was ok but still average. It was one such feeling that the day is screwed due to a bad food.
