I’m a patient who makes a serious effort to stay informed and proactive about my health. When I saw Dr. Carino, I brought in lab work that I had ordered myself. The results suggested a possible urinary tract infection (UTI). Dr. Carino asked what I thought about the labs. I explained that I wasn’t sure how to interpret them and wondered whether there might have been an error in the collection process. He then asked whether I had a fever (I did not) and whether I had any burning with urination (I did not). At that point, instead of investigating further or offering guidance, he gave me a strange look and said, “Just keep on doing what you’re doing. You’re going to be alright.” No follow-up testing, treatment plan, or explanation was offered. I followed his advice initially, but ultimately had to determine on my own that I did, in fact, have a UTI, identify the appropriate antibiotic, and determine the correct dosage myself. If you are a patient who works hard to stay on top of your medical condition and expects active clinical engagement, careful evaluation of lab results, and clear medical guidance, this may not be the right physician for you.
