A perfect place to end the night. My partner and I walked past and thought we were going mad 😂 Coming from the UK, I've never seen a place like this before. From a simple, beautiful coffee shop to a hidden bar. Just perfect. If you haven't been, you need to go. The vibe is so nice, the host was polite and accommodating. The bar space was so nice. We sat by the bar and enjoyed the vibe. The DJ was good and the whole place is a 10/10. We definitely will be back. The drinks were flowing and we just enjoyed the time.
Came Wednesday night on a whim, for my first time I had a great time. I arrived between 9-11p. I did have a slight wait to be seated, but hostess was friendly. She sat me at the bar & I ordered 2 drinks, both delicious & skrong (aka made properly 😂). Had a DJ playing R&B slow jams ❤️ ONLY downside to my experience: 1 single stall bathroom. I hope there were 2 bathrooms back there but if not, there’s the flaw. I hate waiting for restrooms but it was clean 🤷🏾♀️ Nonetheless, I enjoyed my time!!
Best place on the Beltline to spend a birthday. The food is great, the drinks are unique, and the service is top notch. If you’re a martini fan, this is your spot. Their dirty martini is top notch.
If you're looking for a unique and intimate experience, The James Room is a must-try hidden speakeasy. However, I highly recommend making reservations in advance, as the wait can be quite long. Once inside, you'll be transported to a dark, mysterious setting with music playing in the background, which adds to the speakeasy's allure. The staff was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, helping us select the perfect cocktail and dessert to enjoy. Overall, The James Room is an excellent spot for a date night or a night out with friends when you want to dress up and enjoy a unique atmosphere. I highly recommend checking it out for anyone looking for an unforgettable evening.
Dress code enforced - don’t bother coming is sports gear or slides. Drinks are good, service is fast (relative to the alternative cocktail bars in Atlanta). Would recommend for a date night spot
I finally got to go to The James Room! I was very happy with my delicious Last Word, which was the most balanced I've had in a restaurant (I make this drink at home a lot). The charcuterie board was yummy with savory and sweet flavors to compliment one another. The price was surprisingly reasonable for the area. A great date night spot!
This speakeasy has delicious cocktails. I ordered the Spring Fling and Lost in Translation. The dj enhanced the atmosphere with perfectly curated music that set the right mood without overpowering my conversation.Their honey siracha chicken wings are a must-try—crispy, flavorful, and the perfect complement to the drinks. A fantastic spot for a chill night out.
Super awesome vibes!! I’m from Chicago, and I’ve lived in LA and New York. I love the vibe of this spot! It gives me LA x speakeasy. Tunde my bartender was phenomenal I had an old fashion and a Mon Cheri both drinks were fantastic!! Highly recommend!
Speakeasy vibes in downtown ATL near off the belt line. The winter vacation (best coconut flavored drink I’ve ever experienced) and autumn bliss (Pj wasn’t feeling this one too much, tasted sour). The charcuterie board was perfect, 🦀 cakes simply splendid, and the flat bread was very flavorful. Great pre game spot for friends and good music.
This spot is tucked away on the beltline area. Very nice Atmosphere, music..DJ. kitchen closed early?! So we couldn't sample any food. But the drinks were spectacular
Although it is small, it had a sexy vibe. The atmosphere was very grown (30s - 40s). Drinks/bartendenders were great and the music was smooth hip hop, r&b and classics. I think I found my new spot!
We closed out our evening at the James Room, it a lot of run. If your looking for a speakeasy style venue I do recommend this place.
Only 1 vegan option... meatballs and mashed potatoes... tastes fine just not giving upscale date night Drinks were PHENOMENAL!
Amazing atmosphere. I came for sexy decks and I throughly enjoyed the music. The wings are really delicious (honey sriracha). Staff were very friendly and attentive.
First off, Annie the hostess is top tier; she was accommodating and had a welcoming attitude. When we asked to move to another area of the lounge, she made the transition smooth. Our bartender, Marques* was charming and knew what he was doing behind the bar. (*I think that’s his name. He wore a pearl necklace. Please edit his name if the owner responds.) My favorite thing about this sexy & grown lounge is the sound of the music; it’s not too loud, making it easy to converse with others. Make a reservation if you can so your wait is not held up. I can’t want to go back!
We only went for cocktails. Great atmosphere. The DJ was a vibe! He played all the old school hip hop and R&B songs. Will visit again
Annie was very accommodating and made sure we could all enjoy our time together. I’m not from Atlanta and it was a pleasant surprise when she allowed our large group to sit together. Would highly recommend
James room has first come first serve policy, which is good for people like me lol. But seriously, the bar is hidden behind a bakery with the bar visible. So discreet for calling it a speakeasy. But aside all that, they have good drinks and amazing music. We waited around 15 mins to get in on a Saturday night. Their espresso martini was my favorite. Their other cocktails was pretty good too. I ordered chocolate mousse from the bakery to compliment my drinks. I would definitely recommend this place.
Came for brunch which starts at 11, Cafe opens at 8. The baked eggs, and grits were amazing, but pay for an extra hour of parking. Loses a star for automatic 20% gratuity. If you are going to charge me automatically pay your servers more and incorporate it in prices. Tips are for above and beyond not for showing up.
This was my first time in this ATL style speakeasy on The Belt and man was it a vibe! I've been to speakeasy's out in California, Bay Area, but this one had a whole secret refrigerator door looking entrance! Inside I tired to videotape, but it was so dark, and I had my camera light off, but it was a cool, vibe with great music and a chill relaxing atmosphere! The food was decent and the drinks were like pieces of artwork! Our server was very helpful with my food allergies to pork and MSG and I could eat the salmon nachos and the shrimp Mac n cheese! Our cocktails were pornstar bubbly something and it was perfectly mixed with Lilikoi and had that fresh sour punch! | love it! I will definitely be back here to the ATL!
We only enjoyed drinks here, didn’t have any food, but the service was great and the drinks were unique! If you’re an adventurous cocktail drinker, you’d love this spot! Love the decor and vibe
By day a coffee spot, by night a lounge. On my first visit, the staff, especially the ladies, were outstanding in ensuring I had a great experience. The coffee was delightful, and the donut I chose was just as good. The ambiance is charming and intimate, perfect for those who enjoy socializing. I'm looking forward to experiencing their evening lounge next time. Cheers, BN
I liked The James Room! I went with friends on a Friday night and had a great time. Our waitress was not friendly, but she was efficient and quick to take our orders. We had the Equinox and the New Year’s Resolution and both were delicious! It was very busy, but our party of 4 was seated immediately around @10pm. However, other parties were sitting waiting and the Beltline location doesn’t take reservations.
It was a little hard to find because the whole area is under construction, but the macaroons were amazing, the bloody Mary was very good, but small. The salmon and avocado toasts are great, but also small. The kale ceasar was awesome. All around, great spot. Would give it 5 stars if the portions were larger.
What a pleasant, hidden surprise waiting behind the bookcase of this coffee shop. The bookcase door opens to a dimly lit, nicely decorated cocktail lounge with about 10 seating areas and a nice-sized bar. The menu is concise, and to the point, they do serve food but DO NOT come hungry as this is not a restaurant, so the portions are VERY small leaning more toward appetizers. This is a cocktail lounge, so their focus isn't on the food, but you would expect great drinks, right? Right, and WOW, are they great! I couldn't get enough, especially of Winter Vacation (pictured)...I wasn't too sure of it based on the ingredients but it's a chalice full of flavors that hit your buds in all the right places! I find myself thinking about this drink often 🤤😋....definitely going back!
The James room is the definition of a hidden gem, if you blank you’ll literally miss this place. Really gives you that speakeasy feel. The scene is serene and comforting. Reservations are definitely recommended or you can end up waiting quite awhile depending on the night. The waiter was charismatic and attentive. The drinks were tasty for sure, good amounts of mixture and alcohol.
Pretty small in the inside but the waiters were very nice and personable. The menu okay. They have a Live DJ some nights. It’s located near the Beltline so it’s surround by other cute lil places. Parking is only $6!!
This is a beltline speakeasy with different djs and themes each night. I love the musical variety and the cute decor on the inside. Great for a night with friends or a date.
Nice atmosphere inside. A good speakeasy feel and lighting. They had food but we didn’t try it. The mocktail wasn’t impressive though.
- Make your reservations at least a day in advance. - The food and drinks were decent. - The spot is small but nice enough. - The music is very good but loud. - Overall it’s a decent vibe and a solid 4. - I would go again
The presentation of the drinks are excellent, the venue does a great job at appearing high end. They lose stars because of their staff. As my first time here, I asked the waiter for a drink recommendation and he basically said I don’t know. I asked for something sweet, and he said again he doesn’t know. It completely ruins the vibe when you have to interact with people who don’t care about what they’re doing or don’t care about helping. Even if he was clueless about the menu he could have asked someone else.
My boyfriend and I went yesterday and I really enjoyed the drinks, and the wings were also really good. The only thing that took my experience from a 4/5 to a 3/5 was the fact that we were followed outside the establishment to check if we paid. We had literally JUST closed out with the waitress MINUTES before. I also didn’t like hearing the misogynistic artist music choice. I’ll give it another try on a Tuesday✨
Dope ambiance. Music could've been more classic r&b for an r&b night but what really got me was the price for the wings. Menu said $17 for wings so I'm thinking it's a 10 piece which is still high for wings with no side, but this was 6 damn wingettes 🤬🤬🤬
We were at the business tonight and they charged us for 6 peach cobblers instead of 3. We didn't notice until we had left the restaurant. We called but no one answered the phone, probably due to the noise. Can someone reach out to me regarding a refund? Also, I didn't like my drink so Mr. Jonathan offered to remake it(I did not ask him to remake it and I only told him I didn't like the drink because he asked if I liked it). He charged us for both drinks. Being charged $16 each for non alcoholic drinks is a rip off It was a table of 4 right in front of the DJ booth. We had a reservation so you should be able to look up the table, reservation for 830 for 5( but we ended up with 4) Service was good but there were obviously two waiters putting the same orders in. I was going to delete this is someone reached out, but no one has. And I hate it because I really wanted to go back. As I come back here to look at my review from time to time to see whether the business has responded, I get more and more upset especially with Jonathan claiming he was studying theology and dropping the Christian word on us.
I was so excited to finally come here and I when yesterday Friday at 8:30 p.m. The hostess was very attentive, we walked in and there was chaos among the staff as people were being seated. We sat at the bar and were ignored for a while. No hello how are you. No hello my name is.... 3 people working the bar so we flagged down a guy and ordered 2 drinks. There were very mediocre with bad presentation. If you are a fan of only R&B and rap and not a diverse mix of music you will enjoy the music. We ordered the charcuterie board and it was great though.... I will offer that to go but won’t drink here again.
Brought friends here for their first time, so was excited to share the speakeasy vibe. When we arrived, there were maybe 6 customers there, so not crowded. Our server seemed bored and took a long time to take our order for beverages, even longer for food. He did not keep tabs on us and seemed to avoid eye contact. Drinks arrived slowly. Second round two of us ordered Night on Ponce beers, and took him a long time to bring two bright red cocktails he called Late Night in Paris. Meanwhile, one of our party ordered a Last Night in Paris in the first round and it was 100% different (creamy bluish like it should be). No idea what he brought, but he seemed sullen when we reiterated the name of the beers we requested. It was like he was sleep-walking. Bright side, the food was amazing! Kale Caesar was bright and flavorful, shrimp spicy - delicious. Crab Cakes yummy, crispy outside and perfectly cooked inside. Mushroom Flatbread was tasty, but server seemed confused about what was on it. Kitchen staff as impressive, they brought food with enthusiasm, and it was much appreciated. When we paid we saw there was an automatic 20% added. Asking if we could change that our server said no. I told him his service was horrible and he answered, "Cool." Lots of other places with the same vibe are open now, so no need to return here. Shout out the Anansi in Avondale - sexy speakeasy with great service team.
My husband and I usually love it here. I’m leaving this review because of the way things were handled on New Year’s Eve. My husband made reservations 1-2 weeks in advance for 11:15pm. There was no mention of cost upon entry - but not a big deal. It was $50 per person to get in (which included only entry). When I arrive the hostess lets me know this and she lets me know that seating is first come first serve … What? What was the point of the reservation? What was the point of cost upon entry? Terrible business practice.
A disappointment to say the least. Very much an over hyped and underwhelming experience. My girlfriend and I have now tried to go twice and both times have been a complete disappointment. The first time we went on a Wednesday and the DJ (DJ TeeY) was amazing for sure, however, the service was absolutely terrible. Kayla was great, but she was not our server she was the bartender and assisted us after our table experience. The 2nd time we went, we were on the beltline already (as ATL locals) and had just got done with dinner at Yeppa. We decided to go to James Room after just to try to support a black owned business, and were turned away due to the fact that my partner had a matching gap jogger set on. Which mind you we got into the Italian restaurant next to them into in. Also, there was absolutely no one in the James Room for business, like 0 people, as it was only 6PM. Thanks for making it hard to support black owned businesses!
Been here a few times was turned away last night because of dress code which I’m not against at all, only complaint is they’re on the beltline. No one is coming to the beltline dressing business casual or wearing heels etc just something to consider maybe being more lenient since it’s put on the beltline that way everyone can enjoy. We were able to get into even nicer “exclusive places” on the beltline that seem to be doing well, I don’t see an excuse. They’re kinda an odd ball. The drinks make up for it though so that’s why my second star is there. it’s just disappointing that if I want to come here during my beltline walk, I either have to come to the beltline already in business casual or not be able to come and it’s one of my fav places. Just some feedback no hate. I will be likely back soon
The bartender made my cocktail incorrectly and then tired to justify it saying that they were out of two of the ingredients in the cocktail. For $18 drinks, I at least expect them to be made correctly. than a few minutes later another bartender gave me the ingredient they were supposedly out of. Really poor service with mediocre drinks at best
Came here for my husbands birthday after it was recommended to us. We were the first ones in the bar that afternoon and there were about four people working, two employees at the side of the bar chatting, one gentlemen washing glasses behind the bar and then apparently the actual bartender who we were told was in the bathroom and would be with us shortly- no problem we said. We wait a while and a second person comes up to us and apologizes that the bartender is in the bathroom but gives us menus. We start chatting about the espresso martini on the menu and he lets us know they’re known for that drink. We wait a little while longer and a young man comes in the from the front, not sure that’s where the bathroom is but okay everyone has to have smoke breaks but why couldn’t anyone else have made us drinks in the meantime? We order two espresso martinis and I see him putting in the three espresso beans and I’m thinking they must do their martinis differently because from my angle, there is no liquid in those glasses. He brings up two half full espresso glasses with the espresso beans floating in black water and floating to the sides. He immediately puts the credit card reader on the counter for us to close out- a 20% gratuity auto added and it’s requesting if we’d like to add more tip. What if we wanted to have more drinks? We are the only people inside and we have to pay immediately as if we are going to walk out on the tab? We pay $50 for two drinks and he walks to the end of the bar and texts on his phone the remainder of our time we are there. The martinis were the worst we’ve ever had in Atlanta. We forced them down and left. One and done for us at this place.
I visited once, thought of the James Room was an ideal spot for drinks with some friends visiting from out of town. We called, confirmed there was no wait or need to make formal reservations. Our group arrived, 29 min later, and we were told by the hostess that there was a 20 minute wait, and she would text us when seating was available. We walked the BeltLine for 2hrs waiting in the text that never arrived. Very underwhelming and disappointing.
***PLEASE READ*** The James room 0/ 10. The James room needs serious improvement. A group of girlfriends and I linked up on a Wednesday night to celebrate. While the establishment has a very dark and clean esthetic the cracks began to show as the night progressed. Our server Ray was very kind and polite, it was clear he was handling multiples tables and their various needs. Yet drink service was extremely slow. (none of his coworkers seemed concerned enough to check in on him) On a Wednesday night they might as well have never passed out a menu if half of the options are not available I.e Wings/Salmon/Collard greens. (Our server explained the truck comes the next day but the menu options are already limited and not what is advertised on the website) We didn’t have silverware when the food came out and had to ask. Our table basically was falling apart at the bone, it rocked and tilted with an every slight movement. Ray attempted to fix the table but it honestly needs to be removed from the floor before it drops. My friends silverware (that we already had to ask for) had a crumb fall out the napkin and even had food stuck to the back of it. Tonight’s visit was a flop and frankly unimpressive. It’s basically false advertisement to offer an “elegant and alluring” experience and not get that. Also they only allow “one check” so that means one person pays for the entire meal (for any party size) or it can be split evenly up to 3 ways. While this is not normal for ANY eatery, our party didn’t mind. Another issue came into play when we noticed the quantity for one of the drinks we ordered was incorrect. Whoever was the lead at the time “corrected” the matter. Yet when our party member paid for the tab and checked their records the next day, they noticed that the pre-authorization charge was NOT what we paid at the restaurant and was more than our tab- (60 dollars more) despite us getting a “credit” back. REGARDLESS, this establishment needs to work on their business practices. I am extremely disappointed in the owners if this is how they allow their business to be ran.
Some friends and I were on the beltline celebrating a birthday in Lorax costumes. Complete innocent fun and for a great cause. An employee noticed us and invited us in for pics. Nearly every business on the strip did this but then this other guy walks out and was so rude I was taken aback. He specifically asked us 'not to tag the James room (as if we would anyway, I have 2 million followers, I had no interest). I immediately let him know we were asked to come in and that we had no problem leaving but his countenance was extremely off putting. Even more because we were just putting smiles on peoples faces. Every other business treated us kindly and took the occasion lightly but this guy was a stickler. I'll be SURE to let my supporters know not to ever go either. He was an embarrassment to small businesses and as a person with a full staff myself, I'd be ashamed to have someone like him represent my establishment.
Fire the hostess Emerald. We had a 7:15 booking (booked days prior) and I received a message at 6:21 and a phone call at 6:19 that they needed to push us back to 9PM because they had a private event and the space was bought out… We were already on the way. Emerald had a horrible attitude with me on the phone when I called back at 6:44. When I asked why I wasn’t notified earlier, Emerald insisted she messaged me in advance (20 minutes before…..okay) and said “well do you want me to cancel it or do you want to push it back because those are your options”. We have been looking forward to coming here for so long and I am INCREDIBLY disappointed with the experience. Thankfully we got a table at Delbar and the night there was incredible. Hopefully restaurant leadership can guide Emerald on how to handle challenging situations more professionally.
hope this message finds you well. I wanted to take a moment to share the experience my husband and I had during our recent visit to your establishment. We had made reservations in advance, and upon arrival, we were initially told that our attire did not meet the dress code. While we understand and respect dress code policies, we were surprised by this feedback, as our outfits were stylish and more formal than what we observed among other guests. The host kindly offered to check with the manager, who then explained the policy and offered to seat us in a corner as a compromise. We agreed, as we were there to support a friend performing with the band. Fortunately, we were not seated in the corner, but once inside, we noticed that nearly every guest—including the manager—was dressed casually in jeans, sneakers, and hoodies, likely due to the rainy weather. This inconsistency left us feeling singled out and uncomfortable. It was disheartening, especially since we live on the BeltLine and frequently dine at many of its establishments without ever encountering this kind of treatment. We ultimately decided to leave, feeling disrespected and disappointed.
I came here for the first time because it was my friend's birthday and at first glance I was impressed with the chill vibe. But the reason I am giving them a one is because first of all they made us have one tab when our waitress said they allowed another table to have separate tabs. And gave us an excuse of it was so many of us. And the service was lack luster and we were rushed from our table. When all of us were spending money I definitely will never come back
My husband and I decided to stop by the James Room on a Wednesday night after his birthday dinner, based on a friend’s recommendation that it was a great spot for drinks, a chill vibe, and good music. We arrived around 11:45 PM, and as soon as my husband reached for the door, the hostess put up a “section closed” sign and bluntly told us they had already done last call, were full, and were closing soon. To our surprise, a patron inside even mouthed to us, “she’s lying, they’re not full.” I understand that we arrived late and that space may have been limited, but the way this situation was handled was completely unnecessary. A simple, polite heads-up like, “We’re about to close, so it may be tight inside,” or “Y’all will be the last patrons admitted” would have been fine. Instead, we were met with rudeness and zero courtesy. After that experience, my husband said he wasn’t going to beg anyone to take his money, and we left — and we won’t be returning.
Took my mom, a vegan due to medical conditions, here a few weeks ago for her birthday and they gave her a chicken pizza. When she called it out first the waiter said they didn’t have a vegan pizza, it’s on their menu, then he was like “so, you don’t want the chicken”??? It took an extra 20 minutes to get the pizza but in between that time re requested a paper menu to get more items, he said they didn’t have paper menus, they do. By the time the pizza came we were ready to go and said we were sending the pizza back. The manager came and said well “well I’m a vegan too but sometimes I eat chicken”??? As we were walking out, I tried being nice saying “hey, you may want to be more sure of what you’re giving people because they could be sued.” The waiter: well I’m new(??). As we walked out the, black, waiter said this is why he doesn’t like serving black people 🙂↕️
Not typically one to leave negative reviews unless severely disappointed with the quality of food or highly inexperienced and unpleasant service/staff. In our case it was the latter - the hostess and floater hostess were flat out rude, had condescending tones throughout her interactions and simply did not know or have the autonomy to make any decisions. This is indicative to lack of training, and/or simply innate rude personalities. We asked for a manager but were told it’s Jonathon ‘can’t remember his last name’. There are many other options along the Beltline support those instead. Thank you.
